"I will need your input, Mr Weasley. As our new star student, surely you have a good theory about these Cursed Vaults?"
"I-I don't know...Bill told me to stay away from them, professor."
"I am offering the opportunity of a lifetime, Percival. Wouldn't you die to know what's behind that vault? To know all the secrets of the universe?"
"...well, yes. But professor, is it safe?"
"Oh, you can trust me."
(set in Year 5 of Hogwarts Mystery, but Percy has a bigger role about the Cursed Vaults than in the game. why? cause he deserves to be a main character too and he has so much potential)

You what? // Eddie Kaspbrak x F!Uris!Reader
Summary: Eddie (aged up to 16) falls for Stan's sister, which pisses the overprotective Stan clearly off!
Warnings: Language, fluff, insults Rating: PG-13
A/N: This is just a little throw together - just fluff - of scenarios that could happen if Stan's twin sister is starting to date Eddie. It's for all the Eddie lovers out there. PS: I will probably use some of this in my big fanfic as flashbacks ;) PPS: I really dove into some of my teenage memories for this - huh, this was a long time ago ;) PPPS: I'm not a native English speaker, so I apologize for any spelling errors ;)
Tumblr media
"Wow, Eddie, did you finally get some?" Richie snorts, pointing at Eddie's neck.
"What are you talking about, you dickhead?" Eddie whines and pushes his friend off him, who comes closer and inspects his neck.
"What am I talking about? That fucking big hickey on your neck, Eddie Spaghetti!"
"Wait, what?!" he exclaims and touches his neck. He panics and tries to rub it off. His mother will have a heart attack if she sees this.
"That's not how this works, Eds," Richie laughs. "Who was the lucky lady? Or was it a guy?"
"Shut the fuck up, Tozier! That's none of your business."
Now the two have the attention of the others as well. Bill, Stan, and Mike turn to them, and Stan scoffs about his hickey.
"Nice one, Eddie. Come on, tell us. Who was it?" Stan now asks, making Eddie blush. He doesn't want Stan to know that it was, in fact you, his sister.
"No one, and now leave me alone," Eddie grumbles.
"C-c-come on, E-e-Eds. Tell us", now Bill intervenes.
"You don't know her, okay? She's not in our grade." Eddie puts up the collar of his polo and tries to hide it so that the others finally back off.
Tumblr media
The Uris family sat at their table, eating dinner. Stan, as always, sat on your right and shoveled the stew into his mouth, which your mother had made.
"So, how did studying with Eddie go today, Y/N?" your mother speaks up, and you look up.
It's still strange for Stan that you are hanging out with one of his best friends, but it's for school.
"It was good, actually. We - we discovered something new today", you tell your mother, tucking a stray hair behind your ear.
Stan's gaze almost immediately rushes to your neck, where he can clearly see a hickey. Just like the one Eddie had. He stares at you as he puts one plus one together and clenches his fist. You look up and into your brother's eyes.
"What are you looking at, moron?" you ask, and Stan still stares at your hickey.
"Y/N, don't call your brother a moron," your dad intervenes, not even looking up from his newspaper.
Stan looks up into your eyes and then back to your neck. You understand quickly, pulling your hair in front of it and averting his gaze.
Tumblr media
The following day Stan is still pissed. As he walks up to the school, he tightens his fingers around the straps of his backpack. When he spots Eddie, who is standing there with Ben, Bill, and Richie, he walks straight up to him, throws his bag to the ground, and then pushes Eddie back hard, throwing him on the floor. Of course, the others intervene asap and hold Stan back.
"You fucking bastard!" he yells, and Eddie looks at him irritated, as he looks up at Stan on the ground.
"What is your fucking problem, Stan?" Eddie asks in disbelief.
"Fucking hell, Stan. Not cool", Richie says now, taking his best friend's side and pulling him to his feet.
"I fucking know what you did, Kaspbrak! I know it! She's my fucking sister!" Stan now yells, glaring at Eddie, who just now realizes what Stan is talking about. His feeling gets terrible.
"Stan, I - I can explain..." Eddie stutters.
"Are you for real? You're doing my sister? My baby sister? Out of all people!!" He yells, and Eddie flinches.
"Well... Actually, she's the same age as you, Stan", Eddie tries to convince his friend.
Tumblr media
You are, in fact, his twin sister. You are a year younger than Eddie and Stan's other friends and are quite popular. Eddie thinks you have the most beautiful Y/E/C eyes he has ever seen. You never belonged to the losers club and were lucky enough never to have any encounter with Pennywise. Yet.
The other losers only saw you when they were at Stan's house, and Eddie was smitten with you from the beginning. Of course, he would never admit that to the others, or, so help him god, to Stan.
Stan was always overprotective of you and never let anyone get near you. When Richie commented about you getting titties or a "smashing body," he would freak and put him in his place. One could do anything but never joke about his sister.
You joined an advanced history class when you got older and met Eddie. You got along well from the beginning. When you needed to do an assignment together, you often visited his house, or he was at your place.
As the usual "Teenage love story" you studied together, one thing led to another... You found yourselves on your bed, making out.
Tumblr media
Flashback
"Holy fucking shit," Eddie murmured as he placed his lips on yours again. He lies on top of you, and his hands roam over your body.
"You okay?" you ask, and he smiles against your lips.
"More than okay."
You two teenagers continue to make out. Then you turn yourselves around and sit on Eddie, taking off your shirt. Eddies eyes grow big as he stares at your bra and your boobs.
"Holy fuck!" he curses, and you have to laugh.
"You are cute, Eddie. You act as if you've never seen a girl in a bra before" you laugh, and he blushes.
You don't know that he never has. He doesn't want you to find out, so he pulls you down and kisses you again. You start kissing down his neck and then suck on it.
It's a natural sensation for Eddie. And then it happens. He feels it between his legs, how the blood is being pumped there.
'Oh god, no! Why does this have to happen now?!' Eddie thinks, and he sincerely hopes that you don't notice.
You push yourself up from him and then look at him quite amused, which makes Eddie blush. His breathing quickens, and he gets nervous. You smile at him and then stroke your hand over his chest to his waistband. You softly rub your fingers inside the waistband, but Eddie stops you.
"Please... don't", he gasps, looking you in the eyes. He is nervous that you think he is a loser, a prude, or something. Or that you will laugh at him for being a virgin.
A soft smile appears on you lips.
"You’re all good, Eddie," you say. "We are only doing what you are comfortable with, I promise. No need to be embarrassed about it."
Eddie looks at you in surprise. He never thought of you reacting the way you just did. When he sees you in school, you always seem so cool and intimating, if Eddie has to be honest, despite you being younger than him. But right here, right now, you seem... Just so sweet, understanding, and gentle.
A flow of adrenalin pumps through Eddie's veins, and he can feel the butterflies starting in his stomach. Fuck, did he just fall for his best friend's sister?
You lean down to kiss him again. "And if you wanna stop this," you say. "Just say the word."
Eddie shakes his head quickly. "N-no," he stutters. "I actually really, really like this."
"Me too, Eddie. Me too."
Flashback end
Tumblr media
Richie laughs out loud. "Hah, are you for real Eddie? You fucked Stan's sister?"
"No! I didn't - fuck her! We just... made out a little", Eddie tries to justify himself.
"That doesn't fucking matter! You stay away from her!!" Stan yells, but just then, you step up to them.
"What the fuck is going on here?" you want to know from your brother, which you just saw pushing Eddie back.
"You tell me, Y/N! You're the one screwing one of my best friends!" Stan says, still angry.
Now you sigh, annoyed, and rub your forehead. "Are you fucking serious? You're making a scene because I made out with Eddie? So the fuck what when we did?"
Now Stan looks startled at you. He didn't expect that kind of reaction. "But you-"
"But I what, Stan? I'm 15. That's what normal teenagers do when they are "studying." Don't you get that? No wonder you are in this so-called Loser Club. Just grow up, okay?" you throw at his head. You words kind of sting inside Eddie, too, cause you literally just called them all losers.
"But why him? Why couldn't you just - I don't know - take one of your cool kids or something?" Stan now adds.
Again you sigh, annoyed. "Cause, maybe, if it goes into your tiny brain, I think Eddie is cute."
"You do?" Eddie now asks, surprised.
You turn around to him and smile. "I do, Eddie. I quite enjoy our little study dates, to be honest", you say, and Stan gags.
"You two are just gross!"
"Shut up, Stanley!" you spit at your brother. You turn around, winking at Eddie. "See ya, Eds."
Tumblr media
The following few "study" dates between you and Eddie are mostly the same as before. You start studying a little, and then you end up making out with each other. Eddie knows by then that he has fallen hard for you, but he still doesn't know if it's just a game for you or if you feel the same. So this time, he gathers all his courage.
"Y/N?" he asks as you lie on your bed after a wild make-out session.
"Hmm?"
"I was wondering if you..." he starts, turning his head toward you and then clearing his throat. "Um, I was wondering if you, maybe, would like to, um, go on a date, maybe? I mean, on a real date."
You sit up and look at him, surprised. "Eddie? Are you really asking me out?" you ask, and Eddie gets nervous.
"Well, um, m-maybe I do. If you're up for it, of course!"
You smile at him. "Gosh, Stan will freak," you say, bending down to Eddie and pecking his lips. "I'd love to."
"Seriously? Holy fuck!" he exclaims, and his eyes start to glimmer.
"Why are you always so surprised at everything, Eddie?" you ask, amused. "I really like you. Do you think I would make out with you if I wouldn't?"
"I don't know," Eddie says, shrugging.
You sigh and lie down on your bed again. "I know what you might think of me, Eddie. I know what they've been saying about us."
Eddie pops himself up on his elbow. "You have no idea what I think of you, Y/N Uris. Those things they say about you - I think it's just what it is - rumors." He bent down and kisses you again. "And I really like you, too, by the way."
"Just one thing first... I want to talk to Stan about it, if that's okay with you, " you say, and Eddie sighs.
"I would've done that myself, but honestly - he freaks me out!"
Tumblr media
That evening you knock on Stan's door.
"What you want?" you hear him say as you open the door slowly.
"Stan? Can I talk to you for a sec?" you ask, and Stan looks up from his comic.
He then sighs and continues reading it. "What's up?" He is still pissed at you for fooling around with his friend.
You close the door behind your back. "It's about Eddie..."
Now you have his attention. He looks back up at you and closes his comic. He angrily bites his lip as he glares at you. "What about him?"
You nervously knead your fingers. "Well... I - I think I'm kinda falling for him, Stanny."
Stan's eyebrows shoot up. "You fucking what?"
You huff and then sit down next to your twin on his bed. "I don't know. It's just... The time I spent with him as of now was really - great. He's a great guy, and he's funny and cute, and he is really good at-"
"Wow, stop! I don't wanna hear this!"
"I was going to say at making me laugh, but okay." Ypou roll her eyes. "He asked me out, you know."
"He did what?" Stan says and shoots up.
"Calm the fuck down, you moron. It's not like he asked me to marry him! It's just a date. But I told him that I wanted to talk to you first. I want you to be okay with it."
"Dad told you not to call me that," Stan mumbles. "But no! Just no, Y/N. Not Eddie. Not one of my best friends. Please!"
You frown. "But, I really like him, Stan. And he likes me, he told me. We wanna try it."
"And what if it backfires, huh? What if you two don't work out, and my friendship with Eddie is ruined because of you? I don't want that. I really don't, Y/N!"
"But... If we don't try... We will be unhappy. Do you want that for us?"
"Jesus Christ, Y/N. You're fucking teenagers! You'll get over it."
You let your head hang and sigh sadly. "You know... I really thought you wanted me to be happy", you say, standing up slowly.
"Y/N -"
"No, I get it, Stan." You walk to the door and open it. Before you step out of his room, you look back at your twin. "I will go on that date, you know. I just would go with a better feeling, you being okay with it. But if it has to be like that, it will."
Tumblr media
For a month now, Eddie and you have been dating. But also, for a month now, Stan hasn't talked much to Eddie or you, which was quite hard. But Stan wanted to make his point clear. If his sister and best friend started dating, he doesn't want to be part of it even though he starts to regret it lately. As it seems, you and Eddie go perfectly with each other. Stan always sees the heart eyes Eddie is giving you across the schoolyard and how you always blush and send him a little kiss back.
So Stan made a decision. In recess, he walks over to the little wall, where you sit with Eddie's head in your lap. You two look so happy and are laughing about something when Stan clears his throat next to you.
Eddie shoots up and looks at him. "Stan!" he says nervously.
"Hey guys", Stan says, pressing his lips together and scratching his head. "Can I talk to you for a sec?"
Eddie and you exchange a look when you nod.
"Sure", you say, crossing your arms.
"Well, I uh, I wanted to apologize to you guys for-" Stan stops when he realizes his other friends are standing behind him. He quickly looks around and continues then. "I wanted to apologize for being an idiot. I can see now that you two are happy together, and - well - who am I to stand in the way of it."
Eddie and you are both looking at Stan. Then you stand up slowly.
"You mean it?", you ask, and Stan is looking at you and then at Eddie again when he nods.
You take your brother in your arms. "Thank you, Stan. This means so much!" Then you turn back around to Eddie and kiss him.
"Okay, but just - don't do this in front of me!"
Tumblr media
Hand in hand, Eddie and you walk through Derry. It's been a year now since the two of you got together. Your relationship couldn't have been any better. Even Eddies mother accepted you, even though it took a long time for Mrs. Kaspbrak to accept the fact that her Eddiebear has a girlfriend now.
As you pass the pharmacy, Greta Keene and her posse are just leaving it. You can feel Eddie's hand tighten.
"Hey Y/N... Are you seriously still dating this hypochondriac little psycho?" she yells after you, making her posse laugh, and you turn around. You sigh and look Greta in the eyes.
"Y/N, you don't need to-" Eddie tries to stop you, but you just shake her head.
"No, Eddie. She can't talk to you like that."
"What? Is little Kaspbrak not man enough to stand up for himself?" Greta scoffs.
"You know what, G? Why don't you just shut the fuck up, huh? Why do you even care if I'm dating him or not?" you ask and put your chin up.
"Who said I did? I was just wondering, did you already man up this virgin, or has his mommy something against it?"
You let go of Eddie's hand and walk up to Greta. You are much smaller than Greta, but you don't care.
"You're one to talk, Greta. Spreading the rumors that you are easy to have yourself, despite being a virgin yourself! Well, I would rather be a known virgin than be one and be called a whore! But then, I mean, who would really wanna fuck you?"
Eddie can see that your speech is everything but pleasant for Greta. Her face turns red, and she clenches her fists.
"That's not true!" she tries to tell her posse, who is mumbling now. Then she turns back to you. "You little slut!" she creams and pushes you back hard, so you fall to the ground and crash with your face to the concrete.
You immediately sit up and Eddie can see that you're bleeding.
"Y/N!" he screams and kneels to you. "Are you okay?"
Greta and her posse are just laughing, making Eddie look at her with the nastiest look he has.
"You are a fucking asshole, Greta!" he hisses. "Just pathetic and - and you are a loser!"
Greta now glares at Eddie and grabs him by the collar.
"You little maggot -" she starts, but at that moment, Mr. Keene, her father, stretches out his head.
"Greta!" he yells, and she lets go of Eddie. "Leave my best customer alone!"
"You're one lucky guy, Kaspbrak! Next time you won't be!"
As Greta and her posse leave, Eddie brings his attention back to you. He rummages in his fanny pack for his disinfectant spray and gauze.
"Shit, Y/N! That looks bad. Do you know how many bacteria there are on the floor? Holy fuck!"
He starts to wipe the blood away. You just look at him, smiling.
"What?" he asks.
"There is the boy I love."
Eddie smiles and pecks your nose before finishing your wound and helping you onto your feet.
"You are lucky to have me, or you would probably die of a-"
"Let me guess... a staph infection?" you laugh, making Eddie laugh too.
"Exactly." He takes your face in his. "I love you so fucking much, Y/N. Thank you for letting me be with you."
"I love you too, my hypochondriac sweetheart. Until the end", you whisper back as you kiss passionately.

this is probably gonna make me sound so lame but whatever. i see so many people around my age in the u.s. who move out of their parents' house and into a shitty little apartment where the rent is way overpriced and they have to share it with like 4 other roommates who all dislike each other and never even talk with each other or eat a meal together and will go to great lengths just to avoid even being in the same room as one another at all. i just don't get it. maybe that would be cool if it was you and your friends, or maybe it really is the best option available to you if you don't have a good relationship with your family. but in a lot of cases, i think this is something that people choose to do largely because it's a big thing in u.s. culture that you have to move out asap because if you're still living with mommy and daddy at 18 you're a loser.
but i still live with my mom and my brother and i'm about to move in with my grandma too, and i feel like this is how people are meant to live. i think it's so much better, both financially and socially, to live with my family who i love and am used to living in the same space with so i know that our lifestyles are compatible in that regard, vs trying to make cohabitation work with a handful of randos who probably only benefit me by helping to pay rent while actively making my living situation worse in every other way.
i honestly don't see much of a reason to ever move out because i have no interest in getting married and starting a family of my own or anything like that. i only really used to want to move out when i was living with both my mom and dad in the same house because they had a terrible marriage that made everyone and everything miserable, but now that it's just my mom, there aren't many problems anymore. the only thing i can see that would be better about moving out is that i would have more space and privacy/independence, but it's just not worth all the trouble that would come along with it when, even if i lived on my own, i would still be visiting my mom and brother like every single day anyways. also i just don't like to own a lot of things, so i honestly don't really need that much space of my own, so if i had my own house/apartment, it would feel like a waste. and it's just a lot less work when you can split the bills and chores between multiple people. this arrangement is better in most regards for everyone involved. the u.s. is so wrong about this.

" If anything can go wrong, it will."

Good night!! (Here it's still night :p )
A few weeks ago I said I would do a oneshot Lorraine Broughton x F! Reader, but it got too big so I decided to follow the initial idea and turn it into a mini series. I have two chapters written and I'm going to post them here and in Ao3, I think there will be 3 or 4 chapters in total, but I'm not sure yet.
English is not my first language, so all mistakes are mine.
Enjoy!!
warnings: mention of violence, R cursing, forgery of documents (?)

1989
Berlin, East Side
You feel in your bones, when you wake up, the consequences of last night and think that the famous Murphy's Law decided to test you. On this side of the wall few things go right, but having an order in your head two days after joining STASI's wanted list proves that nothing is so bad it can't get any worse. Courtesy of a dumb customer who messed with the wrong people and thought revealing where you find your customers would be enough information to escape death. The Local Gang (or Angels, as they call themselves) loves to eliminate competition from the market.
Now he's dead and you have to deal with the STASI AND the Local Gang (you refuse to call them Angels).
The local fucking gang that sent a team of idiots to break into your favorite bar and made you run out the back door before meeting a customer who was going to pay well. The local fucking gang who must be pissed that you shot the six dumbest members you've ever had to face in your life. No really fatal shots, but of course that won't matter as they do business with the KGB.
Sometimes you want to ignore the rules you've made for yourself, especially "never kill someone unless it's in defense of yourself or someone you love", but you think killing six agents who don't have the ability to set up an ambush of success would be a great waste of bullets. Now you know you're going to have to leave town soon and you have no idea how to break the news to your brother/partner, how do you honorably abandon a war before it's over?
Damn Murphy's Law
You know you need to sort this out, but you refuse to stay in bed crying over what's already written and decide to leave the wonderful Egyptian linen sheets you got from your favorite client last month to face the world and it's impossible to face the world without a good amount of coffee. After a quick shower with a cup of Blue Mountain in hand, your newest addiction, you sit in a robe in a nice armchair, look out the window at dying Berlin and thank heaven for the comfortable life you've earned by working with one of the greatest smugglers on this side of the wall, perhaps from all over Germany. Some desperate customers offer you valuable items from them in exchange for passports and unlike your idiot “brother”, you don't have a rule about only receiving cash. Almost everything here comes from gifts, from the sofa, pictures, bags, clothes and even some books on your shelf. You don't even remember buying that cup, or the coffee set, for gods' sake.
If he saw you now he'd complain about being soft with customers and say something about how items aren't a bargaining chip in the real world, you'd get into a tiresome discussion about enjoying the finer things in life and how bills don't compare in the importance of yours. silver chain with moon pendant that was once an amulet for more than three generations for a French family.
At the end of the day, Merkel has a large information network and an office that takes up half the block, where she keeps as much money as she has secrets, and you have a house decorated by other people where each object symbolizes someone you've helped.
Four walls don't make a house
The thought takes away some of the almost peace you feel and you decide to finish your coffee before it gets cold.
After a quick glance at the calendar you remember about the march that will take place in Alexanderplatz square and decide to go scream for Germany one last time, hopefully you'll be able to hide long enough to see the fall of the damn wall that divides this country. It's not your country, not really, you don't even like to remember how you got here, but the experiences you gained wouldn't be exchanged for anything, not even for an original Van Gogh. Also, Merkel asked you to go and bring a black umbrella, the reason was not explained and you didn't feel like asking, sometimes you think Gordon Merkel is not his name, but how to judge the man who is your only family in this end of the world? You smile when you remember that he shouldn't have an umbrella with a story as cool as his and decide to piss him off for it.
Your phone rings, and you notice you've lost track of time. Merkel was helping a blonde woman named L, he didn't give you more details other than a few stories about how she was a perfect and dangerous assassin that you should keep your distance, as few people know how to deal with her. You thought he overreacted, but you had to take over some business from him while she was in town. She seemed important considering the way he told you about her and you knew better than to deny help to the person who always supported you and declared himself a brother, you trusted him because not even the best agent in the world could fake so much sincerity and affection in claiming this title for himself.
You reach out, pick up the phone, and decide to answer it. “Hey little sister, how are you out there? I called to say that everything is fine for dinner today, but there was a mishap and the wine ran out, bring the best Bordeaux you have, I'll return the courtesy as soon as possible." A code, of course.
He needs your services ASAP. Wine is a passport, Bordeaux means two elements, courtesy involves a child.
You can combine business with pleasure "Hi brother. I'm looking forward to today, I'll take the best wine I have, don't worry. I already know how you can thank me. I need to clean the house and go to the office first, but I'll be there on time. wait for me." you say in a voice that oozes normalcy, you never know when someone's listening on the phone especially now that you're a fugitive, disgraced customer. Your body sinks into the armchair noticing the oncoming cloud of worry
Merkel now knows you need his help, as cleaning the house means getting away and going to the office shows you're in a hurry.
"Alright, do you want me to send the driver?" He asks like he's not freaking out and offering the bloody job of one of his mercenaries
“No, bro, thanks, I know the way.” You say as if you really have an escape plan besides getting a fake passport, emergency backpack and all the money you can find.
“See you later, don't forget the wine. Are you sure you don't want the driver?" You wonder if he has forgotten that knowing the way literally means everything is fine
“Relax, see you later” It takes a few seconds for him to hang up and you can hear his sigh.
He will be SO pissed.
You put the phone down as you get up to gather the passport forgery materials and put them in a briefcase. Your cookbook is already there along with some banknotes from different countries. As you pick up the black backpack of standard clothes and accessories that always waited for you in the corner of the door, you decide to wear the first jacket you bought, the dark blue jeans, the combat boots you got from a skinhead, the wristwatch you bought. you got for your brother's birthday, thick leather gloves and a thin white shirt that matches the rest of your outfit. After all, if you can die when you open the door, then die well dressed. Be sure to keep the Colt 1911 around your waist and the Russian dagger around your ankle, after yesterday you never know, Your pocket watch with the coat of arms of the Brazilian imperial family indicates that 15 minutes have passed since Merkel's phone call
You take one last look at the house you've been so proud of in recent years, snap a photo with the Polaroid you've won, and, with a bittersweet smile, close the door. One day when the wall comes down, the government changes and your face is forgotten, you can come back here, until then you will have to make do with the photo album you keep in your backpack and this photo.
Putting on your sunglasses, you arrive on the street and decide to take a taxi on the other corner, make sure you look around before leaving your home, no one knows your address, but you can't be sure the local gang is so stupid to the point of not following you after last night.
Getting a taxi was relatively easy. Neil, the driver, thanks to the boots, mistook you for a revolutionary and talked for 10 minutes about how he hoped he could take down the wall with his bare hands, you thought it was cool, but as you passed the big river that was just a few blocks away from the your brother's office, you couldn't hear a word from him.
A sign signaling that the river was closed to visitors made your eyes fill with tears. You used to go there when the day was bad, spread a blanket in a corner and watch the stars, or just laugh at the distinct reflection the water made of the moon and stars. Merkel accompanied you on anniversaries, justifying them as bonding experiences. After some freaks started swimming in the river and executions increased, STASI took over and you replaced the dark water for the restaurant's bright lights. But seeing it tightly closed gave him a feeling of anguish and rancor. You would silently curse the wall builders for the rest of the trip.
Neil seemed to notice but didn't comment on it, you thanked him, wiped your tears and left a good tip as you descended a block away from your final destination. This time you didn't need to look around because even though Merkel was super busy, he made sure to leave some security close to where your landing place was.
A tall man dressed in a red T-shirt approached you and hugged you as if he hadn't seen you in a long time. You've known him since the beginning of last year, when he arrived at Merkel's office begging for a job, and from the first moment the way he turned grief over his brother's death into a thirst for revolution made you admire the young man. The two of you walked through the great gate hand in hand as you asked about his life with genuine interest, and Klaus increasingly believed in Merkel's theory about you having such a pure heart that you didn't care about motivation or the number of lives they took, your explanation of the judgment not being your responsibility, crossed the man's head before he escorted you to the main office.
You thanked him with a smile, opened the door and stood in front of the table in the windowless room, where your brother was already waiting for you.
"What the hell happened? Are you okay? I was about to send J to get you, please tell me what happened"—he said hurriedly as he got up and pointed at the couch for you to sit on. J was one of the most dangerous women in the building and you were grateful for not wasting her time.
Putting your backpack and umbrella aside, you answered:
"I'll explain later, little brother, now let me help you. You need passports urgently, don't you?" Yes, you were stalling and postponing the conversation. He'd call you an idiot for going out on the street right after you got on the wanted list, and he'd feel guilty when he found out why you didn't tell him. Merkel wasn't going to understand that her fear of failing him was no one's fault but yourself.
Your sentence seemed to give him some responsibility back, but still, as he held out a glass of water for you, his eyes met yours with a glint that warned that this conversation was far from over.
"Yeah, I really do, but don't think I'm going to forget about it. Let's talk when this is all over. Even if it's the last thing I do today."
You accepted the glass with a bit of trepidation and stood up towards the large center table while opening the briefcase with the supplies you were going to need, if Merkel noticed the bills he didn't say anything. Once at the table, you made two passports for mother and daughter in record time. According to the clock, 10 minutes passed, faster than a car, this deserves a celebration. It would have been six if Merkel hadn't been so curious to make you waste time pulling your watch out of your pocket just for him to analyze.
Everything was going well and there was only one last detail for mother and daughter to be taken by one Percival to the other side of the wall. Percival, according to Merkel, was strange and fickle. Unreliable and extremely dangerous, you should also keep your distance from him, as this man had crucial contacts on both sides of the wall.
"He must have fewer contacts than you", you would answer
If a loud noise didn't break the silence
The annoying noise of the door creaking made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and you almost missed the last signature, it made your body vibrate with irritation and your eyes follow to the offensive source of the sound. A tall man with short hair and blue eyes was holding the doorknob with a military posture and before you could release your anger and explain something about how people shouldn't be violent inside Merkel's office you noticed he was accompanied by a woman.
AND WHAT A WOMAN!
Your eyes connected to a pair of fierce, intent green eyes, surrounded by a pale skin tone and hair so blond it looked like snow. The barely perceptible frown showed she was surprised to find someone other than Merkel there, yet she looked ready for a battle. You looked into her eyes again and nodded in acknowledgment, this must be L, the woman he was talking about.
She looked at you suspiciously, but also as if she could see into your soul, and what must have been frightening, you found endearing. A few stories of murders orchestrated by her crossed your mind, but all you could imagine is how beautiful she must be when she's mad.
They say green eyes darken when we're high on adrenaline, does that happen to her?
Her analysis of the intriguing blonde ends when she notices that the man accompanying her has raised his voice and from his furious expression, it's not the first time he's repeated the question. You interrupt him before you hear him and make sure to direct the ghost of anger before him:
"Have you lost your mind? Who walks into the office without knocking? Surely you should be here asking about passports, but if it weren't for my experience and steady hands, they would be in the trash by now. Learn to be civilized. You're under two paws not four, so act human and not animal" you say in an explosive but articulate tone to make sure he understands what you say. Sometimes when you speak fast, you are betrayed by faulty diction. Not today. Today you want this man to feel every fiber of irritation that went through his body.
Hearing Merkel holding a nervous laugh, you try to relax, but judging by the cold, almost murderous look of the man in the doorway, you've definitely gotten yourself in trouble. Looking at the organized clothes, you notice it's an old police uniform, probably taken by your brother, and unless Merkel has hired new employees, you've never seen it around here. His eyes snap back to his and something inside you warns that this must be Percival. He probably wants to kill you.
Damn Murphy's Law
A brief silence settles in the room and you shake off the fear and turn away, refusing to play the glaring game with a man who almost spoils your art. On other days you might look at him at a party, but today you want to make him swallow the ink on the stamp in his hands and invite the blonde to dinner
And it's her voice that breaks the silence.
You're flipping through the two passports for failures when she says
"Sorry, miss. My friend is an unprecedented idiot. Shall I close the door and knock again? Perhaps your highness too--"
You turn her body towards her when you hear the slightest hint of irony in her tone and interrupt her with a fake smile as you look into her eyes.
"It's not necessary, I accept your apology, Miss. I always said that Merkel should have someone armed at the door to remind everyone of the need to knock on the door. Anyone who didn't knock would lose his mind as the law of my reign says. Perhaps I should start. for him, since the top head is the last thing he wears lately" you joke look at Merkel who doesn't seem offended by the statement, shrugging you look at those blue eyes again and say "the passports are ready. Let's get out of here."
You close the passports, reach for your backpack and umbrella and start moving towards the door, both agents let you lead the way and judging by the blonde's expression, she's not used to being interrupted, nor is she used to seeing someone talking like that with Merkel, but today it was acceptable. You really think she's adorable, but you know better than to let someone make fun of you, especially in front of your brother who wouldn't let you forget about it. Either she doesn't care, or she's a great actress. Anyway, that idiot is still by her side and you refuse to be the reason for his possible laugh.
Her friend probably didn't have the same acting classes and his resemblance to the local gang members, like he's going to kill you in the blink of an eye in a cowardly way, is almost frightening. If Merkel hadn't said L is a woman, you'd be scared. It makes you shiver a little and look for Merkel, but he's not following you. Looking over his shoulder you see him putting a few more piles of dollars and euros into your briefcase. With a snap of your fingers you get his attention and before you walk out the door, you hear the briefcase click closing.
Once out of the room, you look around and realize that nothing has really changed, all faces are familiar, except for three people: a couple talking to a child. After a brief analysis you find yourself facing the passport clients, mother and daughter. The man doesn't look older than 60 and has kind eyes, almost as if he doesn't live on this side of the wall.
They don't seem to notice you
Your observation is interrupted by Merkel's loud, proud voice, right behind you. Here it comes
"This is Elizabeth Loyd and Percival, two trusted clients. Elizabeth and Percival, this is my little sister, she will be on the march today, if you need anything in the future you can talk to her."
Hearing her name, you notice that Merkel really wasn't creative at all. Who would use the initial letter of a surname as a symbol? Anyone who heard the stories about L and met a loyde who knows a Merkel would make the connection. As you turn around, you swallow your nervousness and try to put on your best smile as you say your name to them. The blonde woman who finally has a name, Elizabeth, leans closer, her eyes never leaving yours, and you wonder if she can feel the jumble of emotions that is unraveling inside you.
She smiles a smile that makes you sure she does and reaches out and greets you with a firm grip, if she noticed the sweat on your hands, she didn't let on. She also looks a little more comfortable.
Maybe because she noticed you said her real name, idiot.
You hate yourself for one second and the next you want to be without gloves because it feels soft and warm.
The man, Percival, comes next and looks at you suspiciously and the smile fades from your face, you wonder if no one else can smell the strong smell he gives off, a smell of cheap whiskey and arrogance. Still, he holds out his hand and this time you thank the gods for the gloves. Make sure you don't bow your head or fail in your posture. He still looks at you like you killed his son. Useless even to pretend, for God's sake.
Merkel watches the exchange from afar and nods to Elizabeth, she responds and Percival walks away looking uneasy. You look around uncomprehendingly, feel a little left out, and wonder which computer must have Tetris installed.
You would kill for a distraction right now.
Going out on the street in a crowded march while being chased by two groups still makes you sick.
Your brother approaches and extends his hands around you. You've missed him for the past few weeks. He still wears the perfume you gave him for his birthday and it makes you sink deeper into the hug. You know he's going to be mad when he finds out what happened so you enjoy as much affection as you can
"Little sister, in addition to our conversation I need to tell you something" his voice is low in tone and you doubt you would understand the words if you weren't so close to him "but I can't do that until the march is over. Meet me at usual table at the restaurant where we celebrate our achievements, It's very important"
His even low voice is charged with strong emotion and you are genuinely worried, Merkel has never been like this before.
"I'll do it, brother, I promise. Whatever it is, we can work it out together" you say with all the certainty you can muster in your voice, because you need him to understand that this is true.
You feel eyes on you and as you look up you notice that Elizabeth keeps an eye on your exchange with Merkel while talking to the little girl's father, from the distance she probably can't understand anything and you don't know if she celebrates or cares with so much attention received. A little further away is a Percival who pretends to be busy with the coat he's wearing. He also pays attention to your exchange, but his talent for discretion is as effective as his ability to open doors.
Your eyes return to the concentrated blue eyes that are in front of you and Merkel speaks in an almost inaudible way:
"When I whistle, I need you to raise your open umbrella and stay alert. The three people we're going to cross are very important, nothing can go wrong. But if it does, I'll be at the restaurant, whatever happens find me there."
Noticing the proximity of Percival and Elizabeth, you place your hand on your brother's shoulder and smile as you speak a little louder:
"Don't worry man, it's always a pleasure to help you. I'll leave my briefcase here, then meet you to get it. Good march."
Merkel shows that she understands his strange move and smiles, you greet some friends of his that you haven't seen in a while and as you head towards the exit, you meet a pair of deep green eyes. Elizabeth is gleaming in the cold lights that are refracted by the mosaic of the gate, she looks into your eyes, ever alert, looks at the object in your hands and nods her head with a half smile, do you think the guard's idea black rain was hers.
As you wave back, you can feel that a pair of eyes haven't left your back since the moment of your brother's embrace, as the old man is saying goodbye to the family, you know who they belong to and decide not to look for them. If the STASI, KGB or local gang find you, he doesn't own the pair of eyes you want to remember before you die.
Taking a deep breath, you walk through the gate and blend into the crowd.
..........................................................................................................................
After leaving Merkel's office block, you take a hat out of your backpack and wear your sunglasses as you look around, not that a local gang member is here but because if he sees you in disguise he will ask a series of questions and he has enough problems already, plus STASI must be monitoring this area and the last thing you want is to be arrested. You decide to tuck your coat into your backpack to change your look, and while internally debating your ability to ignore the cold, your eyes catch the almost snowy blond hair in the crowd.
This signals that they are already on the march and you decide to get a little closer to them, but make sure you do this without drawing attention to yourself since the nasty man is still there. Elizabeth is on your diagonal absorbing all the extraneous details that might be a possible threat, she seems so focused on the job of passing the owner's gentle eyes in a safe way that it makes you wonder how important he is and if she's noticed you.
A few meters later a familiar noise floats through the march and you open the umbrella almost instantly, as do other protesters.
Out of the corner of your eye you can see Percival taking the man's family across and sometime later Elizabeth does the same. You notice that her posture has changed and when she decides to stop for a better look, the crowd drags her and you can no longer locate her.
Her feet continue forward and as some signs are raised by the protesters, you try to find your brother. Unsuccessfully. You decide to trust their ability and hope that you can meet him again at the restaurant.
You also want Elizabeth to be okay.
Continuing on the march, after two or three long blocks you notice the familiar silhouette of one of the STASI bosses, he is watching the crowd as if looking for someone, but he doesn't seem to notice you. You notice observers on top of buildings and decide to leave the streets. Whether it's the Local Gang, KGB or STASI itself you don't know and decide you don't want to know.
Your brain tries to design routes to escape and your body mimics the movements of the closest protesters so as not to draw attention to you, but when some agents in black point in your direction and make space in the crowd, you run between people to seek shelter in somewhere you know and at every step you are sure that the day will be worse than you thought.
Damn Murphy's Law

I was reading through some of your old asks on the Weasley family and you mentioned that all of the kids were emotionally abused except Charlie and Ginny. I don't know about Charlie because he is so rarely around (a warning sign in itself) but Ginny absolutely was. The first thing her parents told her when she escaped a near-death experience after the most traumatic year of her life was "why you so dumb as to trust a friendly book". Arthur literally chides her for not outsmarting the Heir of Slytherin and it's Dumbledore who has to step in and say that she is 11 and this is Voldemort. Dumbledore, the most neglectful headteacher ever. She never gets therapy and by book five it seems like everyone has forgotten what she went through. The fact that she turned to the diary in the first place could just be about Molly and Arthur not having enough time for all of their kids but their reaction to it is so messed up. Considering this is a very traditional world, I would imagine their view of the only girl is a bit like a doll. Actual emotions and a reaction to something deeply traumatic? What? Her own passions and love of Quidditch she felt the need to hide from everyone for years? What could she possibly want to talk about with someone/thing that actually listens to her thoughts and fears? No, she was just being silly and foolish and not listening to her father's advice about not listening to things without brains.
This has been sitting in my inbox for a few months—my sincere apologies and I hope you see this! I'm not sure that I ever said anything as explicit as "all of the kids were emotionally abused except Charlie and Ginny." In fact, I know I didn't because I went and reread my Ginny posts. If anything, we don't have enough information about Charlie (except that he, like Bill, got the hell out of dodge ASAP). As far as Ginny, I think my interpretation of her as the favored/golden child (one I stand by) may have been misread to mean she never suffered any emotional abuse/ill effects of the Weasleys bad parenting. Definitely not true, and if that's what was coming across that was never my intended point. So, let me clarify that now! The Weasleys are presented as the model of loving, attentive parenting (in contrast with the neglectful, cruel Dursleys), but that is a fallacy. That's not to say the Weasleys don't love their children—they do! But that doesn't mean they haven't been accidentally neglectful (to the middle children especially), or dismissive, or controlling. The circumstantial reasons I think Ginny has suffered relatively less or different effects of this upbringing is because she's the youngest and the only (much-desired and sought) girl. A few of the things you bring up—the quidditch, for example—are great evidence of her brothers' treatment of Ginny (big brothers being what they are, and perhaps a jealous reaction to the fact that Ginny was favored) rather than her parents'. That's not to minimize that by virtue of being the only girl, Ginny has fewer opportunities to express her emotions with a peer her own age. Unfortunately I think this breeds a little bit of a "not like other girls" attitude in her teen years (very common!). Regardless, Ginny suffered a huge trauma re: the diary, and a terrifying manipulation at the hands of an evil person! Her parents' flippant reaction to that is totally wrong, and further illustrates my issues with them as the "ideal" parent pair in canon.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Life on the streets had always been hard for Jason, not knowing when his next meal would be or if he would have to endure another beatdown when he wouldn’t pay the ‘monthly tax’ to the two-bit criminal working for Black Mask. He hadn’t expected to have this weird feeling in his chest that made him want to protect her from all the bad things in life. In Crime Alley it was survival of the fittest and if you wanted to survive you were only supposed to look after yourself, only yourself. Somehow though, there she was, shivering in the rain and looking as thin as a twig which would break if simply touched.
“Hey, its raining out, you should go back home, it’s not safe to be out here”
“I-I don’t ha-have a-a home or any wh-where to g-go”
“Well come on then, I know a place” “Wh-where?” “A lil’ up ahead, you’re shaking like a leaf so hurry up”
Upon reaching the building, Jason could see that the little girl was still shaking, it made sense though since unlike him who was only a little bit wet, she was soaked to the bone.
“Here, blueberry” Jason hands Marinette a blanket, “warm up, this place doesn’t have heating, so these blankets are all we got” gesturing to the pile of worn-out blankets which had definitely seen better days.  For the first time in a long time both Marinette and Jason feel asleep knowing that they were not alone.
Over the next few weeks, Jason and Marinette, who Jason had taken to calling pixie, became inseparable, things were somewhat good, running errands for some thugs got Jason money for food and he didn’t feel lonely ever since pixie came into his life. Jason should have known that it wouldn’t last, money was dwindling as fast as it was coming and the time for the monthly payment was coming up. He hadn’t realized how hard it would be when it wasn’t only him that he had to look out for, but also pixie, his little sister not by blood but by love.
Over the next few days Marinette could see that something had been bothering Jason, but every time she asked, he said nothing and tried to change the subject.
“Jay-Jay, what’s wrong, you seem so much more on edge for the past few days?” “Hmm, oh its nothing pixie, I scored this somewhat fresh loaf of bread today, here” Jason said, giving the loaf to Marinette and only ripping off a tiny piece. Marinette heard the rumble of Jason’s stomach and looked at him questionably, he had been getting thinner and she couldn’t help but think that it was her fault. Ripping off a big chunk of the loaf, she handed it to Jason, “Jay-Jay you need to eat, don’t think I haven’t noticed you giving me most of the food, you need it more than me” “No pix, I already ate, I brought this for you” “Bu- “. Jason cut Marinette off, “No buts pixie, you need to eat or you’re going to be a twig forever!” “Hey! I’m not a twig” “Then eat pixie” Marinette huffed then mumbled out a “fine”.
Marinette had been meaning to do something for Jason for a while now and she found her opportunity when she came upon a fruit stall, the owner was busy talking to someone, so she quickly swiped an apple. While walking away she beamed, “Jason’s gonna love it!” she thought. She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn’t notice the two men looking at her with knowing eyes.
“Hey! Isn’t that the kid whose been hanging around with the Todd brat these days?” “Yeah, I’ve word on the street is that she’s his sister or somethin’” The taller man, Mark, smirks, “well, well, well, guess we found the Todd brat’s weakness now”. The other man, Bill, smirks as well “collection time is coming up soon anyways, why not send a lil’ reminder”
2 blocks away from her and Jason’s hideout, Marinette was sure to hide her loot so that no prying eyes would see anything, this was for Jason and no one else. All of a sudden, she heard a holler behind her and spun around, immediately on edge.
“Hey kid! you’re with that Todd brat aren’t cha, his sister?” They didn’t wait for a response, just barreled into her, knocking her to the ground. “See, ya brother usually ends up comin’ up late on payments so we thought a lil’ incentive would nice, saves us the hassle of having to track the brat down and him a beating, ya know”
Before she could get up and run, she felt the wind get knocked out of her by a kick to her stomach, then her ribs, she curled into herself as tight as she could, but they kept on kicking her. She hadn’t even realized when they had stopped and left, she hurt all over and farther ahead was a mushed apple with a section bitten off suggesting that someone had taken a bite then crushed it with their shoe.
Crying, bleeding, and defeated, Marinette limped back to the abandoned building she and Jason had huddled up in. As soon as she got in, she was faced by a worried Jason. “Pixie!! Where were you, I came back and you weren’t here, I was so worried something had happe- “Jason cut himself off. “Pixie, what happened to you? Where did all these bruises come from, just give me the name and I swear they won’t ever touch you again”
“I don’t know their names, but they said something about beating me up as incentive for them not having to track you down for payments and for you to avoid a beating”, Jason felt a cold shiver run down his spine. He had been worried about this month’s payment date was creeping closer and closer and how he didn’t have enough, again. He had heard that the tires business had been doing well in the Black Shack, the place where most stolen things were fenced. He would have to make sure to try and score some, and cash in a few favours to try and scrounge up the money. Batman usually stuck to the city and here, in Crime Alley, there was no Batman that was gonna swoop in and save him or pixie if he wasn’t able to pay up in time.
Jason spent almost all of the next day trying to scope out any potential places he could hit and while he was able to get some loot, it wasn’t enough. It was already after dusk and the night had set in, and he knew he better get back soon since the later at night, the more dangerous it is. Just 1 or 2 buildings before his destination, he saw it, the bat-mobile, basking under the moonlight like a gift from above, and just by looking at it he could tell that they were custom. This would easily be able to cover the rest of the payment and he could get that plushie pixie had been staring at the other day.
He first made sure that no one was nearby, it wouldn’t do for someone to try and claim his prize before he could. Confirming an all clear, or as clear as it could be for the time of night, he got to work on the tires. He was almost done taking out the 3rd tire when he heard someone around him and whipped around so fast, he was sure he would feel it in his neck later. He couldn’t see the person but definitely felt someone’s eyes on him.
“Whoever you are, beat it, I found this first so it’s mine, go find your own!”.  The response startled him, as the person came out of the shadows, “This is my car, so I don’t think I’ll beat it”, it was the Batman, and Jason felt as if those white lenses were piercing into his very being. “Ho-Holy shit, you’re the Batman!” “Yes, yes, I am, now could you put the tires back on my car?” “I-I can’t, I need the money, not all of us can afford to live lavishly like you, judging by your custom tires” “Why do you need the money, kid?” “None of your business” Jason sneered, he was getting sick of this, he had hidden the other tires well so he could come back for them tomorrow, he needed to get out of here ASAP. “Where do you think you’re going kid?” Batman asked just as Jason was about to turn and make a run for it, Jason didn’t bother to give him a response just made a mad dash for it.
He didn’t get far when Batman caught up to him, “Kid, I need you to put my tires back on” ‘this isn’t worth it’ Jason thought and decided that he would put the tires back then get back to pixie straight after. As soon as Jason had finished putting back all the tires, he was just about to get the hell out of there when he heard Batman “Get in kid” and knew that he couldn’t leave pixie all alone.
“No, I’m not going with you, you sicko! I already fixed your tires, what else do you want from me!” He struggled “The streets aren’t a safe place for kids, you’re coming with me” “No, let me go! I can’t leave her alone! You don’t understand! Let go!!” “Who her? Is there someone living with you?” Jason mentally hit himself, ‘how could he expose pixie! No, he couldn’t tell him about her!’. “No-one” Jason said as he was huddled into the bat mobile.
It was a few weeks until Jason was able to get out of the Manor and back to Crime Alley to check on pixie. When he reached the abandoned building, there was no pixie in sight, and almost nothing that would tell that anyone had lived there. Finding out through the grapevine, it turned out that pixie had been sold to a tourist couple in the façade of an adoption to pay off the debt that had built up in Jason’s absence. He had failed to protect her, failed to keep her away from all the bad things and now because of Jason’s mistakes, she was paying the price. He swore that he would find her and that when he did, he would never let her go, ever.
It had been years since that fateful night, Jason missed and thought of his little sister every day, he had given up hope on finding her after the first 2 years. Lost in thought, he didn’t realize bumping into a petite black-haired girl carrying a coffee walking out of a café that he and pixie would go to on special days if the had enough money. “Sorry mister, didn’t see you there, would you happen to know where the Wayne Enterprises building is?” “Don’t apologize, it was my fault too, lost in thought, I was just heading there myself, I can show you”. “Thank you so much!”
Jason couldn’t help but be reminded of his little pixie when looking at this girl, he felt his chest tighten up at the thought. “Hey mister, are you okay? you seem to have spaced out a bit” the girl asked. “No, I’m fine, you just remind me of someone who I miss a lot” “Funny enough, you remind me of someone I used to know and cherish a lot when I used to live here”.
“You used to live here?” Jason asked, he would definitely not have been able to tell had she not pointed it out. “Yeah, but it was a long time ago, I used to live in Crime Alley with my brother but got separated and haven’t seen him since” the girl said with a sad and pained face.
“We’re here!” Jason said as they reached the building, “Thanks for all the help mister!” said the girl and was about to walk away when Jason’s had realized that they had never introduced themselves, “Hey! What’s your name?”. The girl turned around and smiled “Sorry, I totally forgot to introduce myself, Hi, I’m Marinette” Marinette stuck out her hand, Jason shook it and said “Hey, I’m Jason”. Both thought ‘that’s her/his name! It can’t be thoug-‘ they didn’t have time to finish their though before a teenager about the age of Marinette with a coffee cup in hand and a younger child came into view.
What the younger said, shook Marinette to her core, not going unnoticed by the rest, “Todd! Finally, you show up Father and Drake have been waiting for you!”. “Marinette? What happened? You look like you’ve seen a ghost”, Jason looked concerningly at Marinette, “You-you’re na-name is Jason Todd?” “Yeah…why?” Jason was getting worried now but felt as if the word has stopped when he heard what Marinette said next.
Her voice cracking, Marinette spoke so quietly, almost as if whispering “Jay-Jay? Is that you?” Jason almost broke into sobs right in the lobby of W.E., could this really be happening? “Pixie, that you?”. Marinette immediately threw herself into Jason’s chest, and nodded “Ye-yeah it’s me, oh my God, jay-jay I thought I would never be able to see you again, are you really here, tell me this isn’t another dream because I don’t ever want to wake up if it is”. Jason started rubbing soothing circles on her back while shedding his own tears, “Shhh, it’s okay Pixie, it’s me, I’m really here, this is real and I thought I would never see you again either” “God pix, I’m so, so, sorry I left you all alone, I looked for you everywhere but never found you”. “Please don’t leave me again” Marinette sobbed, “I don’t want to lose you again”. Jason felt even more tears pooling and dripping from his eyes, “Never pixie, I will never leave you, ever.”
Jason tightly hugged Marinette, “I missed you Jay-Jay” “I missed you too Pixie,  I missed you too”.

“Tom, will you quit worrying? We are plenty capable of watching over your mini me.” Harrison got up from the couch, walking over to Tom where he was straightening his tie.
“I know that but try telling my wife that, she worries too much. It’s been forever since we both went on a date and we haven’t left Charlie alone in a long time.” He fastened his cuff links and straightened his collar. He looked in the mirror one last time before hollering, “Love we cannot be late, come on!”
“I’m coming, I’m coming, give me a minute.” You emerged from the stairwell in a form fitting maroon dress, holding your three year old son Charlie who rested gently on your hip.
“Damn Tom, you won the ‘I’m married to the hottest woman alive’ lottery.” Harry remarked while the boys looked you up and down, mouths gaped wide. You began to blush when you noticed their stares, and kissed your son Charlie on the top of the head.
“I love you, baby boy” You whispered as you squeezed his cheeks.
“I love you too mummy.” He whispered as you walked over to Tom so he could tell his son goodnight.
“I love you darling, you’ll have so much fun with your uncles tonight.” He ruffled the toddler’s hair as he let out a giggle.
“Love you too daddy, bye.” He waved sadly, holding out his arms to hug Tom. He held his son close, peppering kisses on the little boys cheeks. He then looked down at his watch, and quickly passed his son over to Sam.
“I trust you the most, watch over him okay?” Tom whispered into his ear as he laughed.
“Don’t worry, he’ll be fine. He’s safe with us.” Sam said as he grabbed Charlie’s arm and gently waved it. They stood at the door as you got into the car and drove off.
“Honestly your mum and dad worry too much, you’ll be just fine.” Sam cooed as his nephew looked at him curiously.
“Movies please!” Charlie exclaimed as he squirmed in Sam’s arms.
“As you wish, let’s watch some movies.”
While the twins were preparing tortellini for dinner, Harrison and Charlie were busy crafting a pillow fort. Charlie carefully stacked pillows, but an idea came over Harrison as he watched his nephew stack pillows. He grabbed one and gently smacked Charlie with it, which resulted in a fit of giggles.
“Pillow fight!” Harrison exclaimed as he used one pillow to shield himself against the toddler, and the other arm swung around in an attempt to win the battle.
In an effort to get away, Charlie climbed onto the couch and began to swing at Harrison. Since he’s considerably smaller than his uncle, his blows weren’t as effective. Harrison scrambled towards the toddler as Charlie climbed onto the armrest of the couch. He made the mistake of looking down as Harrison pounced towards him, but Charlie took a misstep and fell off the couch. What resulted next was a blood curdling scream.
“Oh my god little dude are you okay?” Harrison panted as he got up to see what happened. Sam and Harry ran into the room and were shocked to see the accident.
“Oh fuck, I can’t believe I did that.” Harrison remarked. He noticed that Charlie’s shoulder was definitely dislocated from the socket and Sam gagged.
Harry, the only calm one, knelt down to Charlie and began to comfort him. He held him as he wailed in pain, kissing his head like Tom usually does.
“We could try popping it back in.” Harry suggested, but when he raised his hand to Charlie’s shoulder he let out another scream. “Don’t touch!” He exclaimed, sobbing while he began to panic. “I want my mummy and daddy.”
“I don’t want them.” Harrison let out a snide remark as Harry shot him a dirty glare. “What are we supposed to do, call an ambulance?”
“No that’ll make a scene, let’s just drive to the urgent care.” Sam suggested. Harrison grabbed his car keys, picking up Charlie as he made his way to the door.
“Wait, what about dinner?” Harry asked as they remembered they were in the middle of preparing dinner.
“I don’t know but we can’t worry about that now. Someone go turn off the stove and get a pint of ice cream and a spoon, asap.” Harrison stated as Sam went to turn off the stove. Sam then emerged with the items that Harrison requested, and handed them to him.
“If I give you this for dinner, will you promise not to tell your mum and dad what happened?” Harrison lorded the ice cream over Charlie’s head as he grabbed at it with his good arm.
“Yes.” He stated giddily as Harrison handed him the pint.
“Good. Don’t be a snitch, but let’s leave immediately.” Harrison stated as they went outside to the car and made their way to the hospital.
“Are you the parent or legal guardian of this child?” The nurse inquired, not looking up from her computer screen as she asked the boys the medical questions. Harrison held onto Charlie firmly while the twins were listening intently.
“Well not technically, but we are his uncles.” Harry answered as she typed something into the computer.
“I see.” She said unenthused. “Well then, where are the parents?”
“Date night.”
“Lucky them. Well the protocol is that we’ll have to call them and let them know what happened. But we will treat him and get him fixed up in no time.” The nurse said as she wrote something on his chart and scanned the paper for the emergency contacts.
“Okay but if Charlie’s parents, who are my brother and sister in law, find out, then they might just murder us. So, how much could we bribe you so that you won’t call them?” Sam pulled out his wallet from his pocket and rustled around for a twenty pound note.
“You did not just try to bribe a nurse.” She looked up at Sam disapprovingly as he waved the bill in front of her face.
“Oh, but I did. How about a twenty?”
After looking over her shoulder to make sure no one saw the transaction, she took the money from Sam’s hand, stuffing the note in her pocket before walking over to the nurse’s station. She picked up the phone, reading off a paper as she dailed a number before pausing. She waved at the boys and smirked, waiting for the recipient to answer. When they finally did, she said, “Mrs. Holland?” loud enough so they would clearly hear her. The boys looked in shock as they realised their ploy didn’t work, and they knew they were screwed.
“You know, I am the luckiest man alive. I have an extremely beautiful and wonderful wife, and an angel of a son. There’s nothing else I’d ever want in life.” Tom held onto your waist as you stood in the vacant parking lot of Giovanni’s ristorante. He leaned in, closing the gap between you two as he kissed you passionately, hands trailing down the small of your back.
This ristorante was significant to you both; this was where you had your first date, and when you got married you even had them cater the reception. When you needed some comfort from your hectic lives, you and Tom often went here to indulge and reminisce about your relationship.
“And I am the happiest woman alive. I have a very handsome and caring husband, and a beautiful baby boy. Life couldn’t get any better than this.” Tom lightly kissed your lips, pulling away to grab your hand as you made your way to the car.
You stopped in your tracks when you felt your phone ring, as you fished around inside your purse to locate it. You looked at the caller ID, and although you didn’t recognise it you answered anyway. The sounds of a hospital filled the background as the nurse addressed you. “Mrs. Holland?”
“Um yes, that is me.” Tom noticed the stern tone in your voice and leaned in so he could hear the call as well. He put both his arms around your waist and kissed the back of your neck.
“Are you the parent or legal guardian of Charlie Holland?”
“Yes, I am his mother.” You uttered out as you felt yourself becoming lightheaded.
“I regret to inform you that your son is in the urgent care with your husband’s brothers.” She stated flatly. You were thankful that Tom was holding onto you because if he wasn’t you would have collapsed.
“Oh my god.” You gasped, holding a hand to your gaping mouth. Tom missed some of what was said but judging by your reaction it was not good news.
“Is he alright?” Your lip quivered as you asked, and on the other end the nurse hesitated her response.
“Oh yeah he’s fine, he just dislocated his shoulder.” You let out a laugh as you realised that he wasn’t in critical condition like she made you believe he was.
“Well god,” you scoffed, “you didn’t have to be all dramatic and make it sound like he was in grave danger.” You remarked as Tom took the phone from you. He still held onto your waist tightly and you buried your face in his chest.
“Hi. It’s Tom, her husband and Charlie’s father. What hospital is he at?” He insisted and the nurse responded, “Lister Urgent Care.”
“Alright we’ll be there quickly.” He hung up and immediately embraced you, your arms wrapping around his torso firmly as he rubbed circles on your back.
“That nurse was downright terrible but our baby boy is okay. Please don’t panic darling.” He whispered. He led you to the car and even helped you with your seatbelt since you were flustered. On the car ride to the urgent care he held your hand tightly, reassuring you that everything would be alright.
After having the valet park the car, you both walked into the entrance of the urgent care and were escorted towards the door where the examination rooms were. The nurse pointed to the room that your son was in, which was room sixteen. You two briskly walked towards the room, but Tom stopped in his tracks a few doors down from the room.
“Remember darling, we have to be really strong and not show we’re scared so that our son in turn won’t be scared, okay?” He kissed the top of your hand, while you smiled weakly. “Of course love, let’s go.” You moseyed on over to exam room sixteen, bracing yourselves as you stepped in.
“Well so much for keeping him safe.” Tom remarked as he walked into the crowded examination room. He held your hand tight as you trailed in behind him. If looks could kill the boys would’ve been dead in a heartbeat.
“Tom, we can explain.” Harry stood up and put his arms up.
“We were having a safe pillow fight but then he fell off the couch and dislocated his shoulder. But he’s okay and still in one big piece.” Harrison hesitantly added. You disregarded what he said, walking over to your son and giving him a hug.
“Mummy careful.” He stated quietly as you hugged him a bit too tight.
“I’m sorry darling, are you okay?” You scanned his features as he nodded. “Mmhmm.”
You looked back at Harrison who was nervously shaking his leg, and said, “You should’ve been more careful. You’re way stronger than he is and you shouldn’t have been roughhousing with him.”
“My wife is right.” Tom interjected. “You guys were supposed to keep him safe.”
“I think we did a decent job.” Harry mumbled under his breath. You shot him a glare and he retracted into his seat.
“Decent is an overstatement.” You mumbled back.
“But he’s fine!” Harrison exclaimed, throwing his arms up as he stared at Tom.
“But what if he wasn’t? Huh?” Tom spat and saw the worry on his mates face. “It could’ve been a lot worse. He could’ve cracked his head open and needed stitches or he could’ve seriously broken a bone. It’s lucky that he only dislocated something, and even that isn’t good.” The boys remained silent as they looked down at the checkered hospital floor.
“Daddy I’m okay, I had fun.” Your son spoke as everyone turned their gaze to him. “I still love them.” He stated as he smiled at his uncles. He crawled up onto your lap and nuzzled his head to your chest.
Tom let out a sigh and tilted his head back, looking at the fluorescent ceiling lights. He looked at his son, and back at his brothers. “You’re lucky my kid still likes you, otherwise you would never watch over him again.”
“We’re aware Tom, we’re genuinely sorry.” They got up from their chairs in unison as they took a step closer to Tom. Tom walked closer to them, stopping a second, but Harrison grabbed his arm and pulled him into a tight hug. Harrison let out a sigh, and whispered, “I’m sorry I hurt your son, and I’m sorry I ruined your date night.” Tom patted Harrison’s back gently and added, “It’s okay mate, everything’s fine.”
“He’s not hurt too terribly and he’s still alive.” Tom laughed, stepping out of the embrace. “Do you forgive me?” Harrison pleaded, but before Tom could speak, he was interrupted. Their gaze averted to the entry way as the doctor walked in holding an arm sling.
“Charlie Holland, correct?” He motioned over to the toddler on the examination table. “That’s correct.” You replied.
“Good. Judging from his x-ray, his shoulder will be okay in about two weeks, and after that he’ll be prescribed physical therapy to make sure it heals properly. We don’t want him having problems with it later in life.” He stated as he lifted Charlie’s arm and put the sling on. Your son winced at the pain but you holding onto him made him feel better.
“Alright, he’s all set, have a nice night.” The doctor said matter of factly and hurried out of the room. Tom looked over at his son, who now sported an arm sling, and he looked back at his brothers and Harrison.
“I forgive you but don’t you dare do that again.” He pointed at the boys and they all crossed their hands over their hearts. “We won’t, promise.” They said in unison.
“Now come on little dude, let’s go home.” Harrison stated as he extended his hand out and Charlie grabbed onto it with his free hand. He gently helped the toddler get down from the examination table, and made sure he was okay. The family all walked out of the hospital as they made their way back to their respective cars.
“Daddy since I was terribly hurt, does that mean I get ice cream? Haz gave me cookie dough ice cream for dinner and I want more.” He grinned playfully and Harrison quickly put his hand over the small child’s mouth.
Tom shot Harrison a surprised glance while Harrison shrugged his shoulders. “Well you know what they say, ‘kids say the darnest things.’”

Chapter 1
Tumblr media
“Mary…” Frank sighed. “Take the boots off and get in bed.” “You told me that Miss Gallagher said I needed to wear them.” she looked at him.
“Yeah, but you can’t wear them in bed…”
Mary flopped onto the side of her bed and reached down to unzip the boots before she kicked them off and Frank picked them up and placed them out of the way. Mary shuffled down under her covers and lay her head back on the pillow and, once she was settled, Frank gently smoothed her blonde hair back off her face and smiled at her. Times like this she really did remind him of Diane.
“Frank?”
“Yeah?” “Can I read for a little while?” she asked.
Frank rolled his eyes “Mary…”
“Please!”
“Fine, fifteen minutes tops. And I’ll be in to turn the light off, ok?” With a grin she sat up and reached for her latest book- Moby Dick, and he dropped a kiss to her head and left her to it. He made his way into the kitchen, cleared the dishes and then grabbed a beer his attention turning to the table which was had clear, the other half scattered with the parts from one of the engines he had been working on. He knew he really shouldn’t bring this home with him but sometimes it was just easier.
His phone buzzed and he reached for it, glancing down at the unknown number.
“Hi Mr Adler, just a courtesy message to remind you of Mary’s lesson tomorrow at One. If you can’t make it please let me know ASAP so I can offer the slot to someone else. Otherwise see you then. Regards, Fliss.” Frank smiled, like he would have chance to forget. Mary had talked of nothing else since Saturday. His fingers hovered over the reply button, before he dropped the phone back down. He didn’t need to reply…did he? I mean…
Oh fuck it. What was a bit of harmless flirting? He picked the phone back up and tapped in a quick response.
“Like I’d have chance to forget. She’s been like a broken record since Wednesday. I had to pry her
boots off tonight as she was threatening to wear them in bed.” Setting the phone down he headed back through to check on Mary, her 15 minutes was over. He found her fast asleep, book clutched to her chest. Gently taking it from her, he slipped the bookmark into the page and turned off the lights, making sure she was tucked in. When he moved back into the main part of the trailer he had a reply.
“Brilliant! That’s what I like to hear. Get used to it, you’re going to hear about nothing but horses now for the rest of your life.” “Great, I can’t wait…” he set his Nokia down, not really having a smarter response to that, so he gathered a few pieces of the engine, setting to work. About five minutes passed and his phone went again.
“You know I offer starter lessons for adults too, maybe you should try it, see if you understand what the fuss is all about.” “No thanks, my feet stay firmly on the ground. Unless I’m on a boat.” “A boat? I didn’t have you pegged as a sailor?” At that Frank let out a bark of a laugh.
“I’m not, not really. I fix them. And besides, you don’t sail speedboats.” “What do you do then?”
“You drive them.”
“Do you drive them on water?” “Dur.” “That’s called Sailing.”
His work abandoned, he took a pull from his beer bottle and shook his head, smile tugging at his lips as he replied.
“But they don’t have sails…” “It’s a boat. It goes on water. It’s called Sailing.” “Alright, I bow to your superior knowledge…” “Glad we agree…even if I do detect a serious underlying tone of sarcasm in your message. See you tomorrow Sailor.” He laughed again, shaking his head. He tapped in a goodnight and placed the phone down, turning his attention to his work.
***** “What are you grinning about?” Bill Gallagher looked at his daughter as they walked across the field, Thor and his own dog, Rupert, hurtling ahead in front of them, their flashing collars keeping them located in the twilight.
“Oh, nothing, just winding someone up.” she smiled “One of the dad’s from tomorrow’s lesson, trying to convince me you drive, not sail, a speedboat.” “Hmmm…well they don’t have sails.” Bill mused.
“Whatever, they go on water, they sail.” Fliss shrugged, slipping her phone back into her pocket as Frank’s ‘Goodnight’ rounded off their conversation.
“So, who is he then?” Bill asked.
“Oh, his name’s Frank.” Fliss replied, nonchalantly, but her dad didn’t miss the flicker of a smile that hit her mouth.
“Is he the one that your mum said was eyeing you up in the bar?” “He was not eyeing me up.” Fliss groaned “He was just being friendly.” “Sure he was.” “Dad.” she warned him, nudging him with her elbow.
“What?” “You know what!” she laughed “Stop it.” “Alright.” he smiled, holding his hands up “I yield, it’s just nice to see you happy, that’s all.” “Well, I am.” she said after a moment, and she meant it “The last six months the riding school has taken off, I’m feeling more, well, myself than I have in years. Just need to find an apartment now.” “Well, on that.” Bill looked at her. “Me and your mum have been thinking. We thought, maybe, you might want to move into the annex. We can do it up, gives you your own space…”
Fliss paused walking and turned to her dad. “That’s where Steeby stays though, when he comes out with Sian and the kids.” “There’s plenty of room in the house.” Bill shrugged “And they come like what, four times a year? It’s stood empty the rest of the time.” Fliss bit her lip.
“It’s just an idea and your brother won’t mind. Look, I know it’s probably not what you had in mind, living in your parent’s annex but for the time being until the Yard starts to turn over more of a profit we just thought it might give you a little bit more freedom.” “Whilst still staying close.”
“I want to keep you safe Titch.” Bill shrugged “I didn’t do that before but,” “Dad don’t.” Fliss shook her head “None of that, it wasn’t your fault. I hid from everyone what was happening…you didn’t know.”
“I should have.” he sighed “You’re my daughter.” “He had everyone fooled, including me. This is no one’s fault but his, I get that now.” Bill smiled and pulled her into a hug. “I know.”
“We should head back.” Fliss smiled, pulling away. “Mum will be wondering where we are.”
“You have anything to finish off?” he asked
“Nope, everything is out for the night and looks reasonably settled.” she squinted at the various horses dotted across her land.
“Hmmm, unlike this fencing.” Bill frowned, examining the broken bit of post and rail that Fliss had patched up with electric tape “This could do with replacing, love.” “Yeah, I know.” she shrugged “I was going to mention it but forgot. The temporary fix has worked for the time being.” “I’ll stop by and do it tomorrow.” he nodded, “Won’t take me long. I’ll level that top field as well whilst I’m at it if you want.” “Thanks Dad” she smiled. In comfortable silence they made their way back towards the main part of the yard. *******
Fliss grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge in her office and took a long drink. The heat was pretty intense today, and she was just wondering if really holding Mary’s lesson as advisable when she realised it wasn’t like they’d be doing anything too strenuous. She adjusted her baseball cap and walked back onto the yard, shouting instructions to the three members of staff to go and take a water break. Just as they were passing her towards the office, she saw Frank and Mary walking onto the yard. Mary was sporting a new riding hat and Fliss couldn’t help but smile.
“Well check you out!” she said, tapping the little girl on the head “Nice hat.” “I liked the silver on it!” Mary grinned, pointing to the sparkly strip that ran along the front.
“Me too.” Fliss nodded. “I have the same hat but mine has blue sparkles.” she straightened up and looked at Frank. “Hey Sailor.” He gave a snort of a laugh “I told you, you don’t sail speedboats.” “They go on water.” Mary said, “Its’ sailing.” “Ha, see!” Fliss laughed
Frank sighed “Whatever.” The corners of his mouth turned up and he handed Fliss the forms he had brought back.
“Oh great…” she thanked him “I’ll just file these and then Ruby will get Monty ready. I thought you might like to help her.” Mary nodded eagerly. Fliss excused herself and Frank heard her shouting something and a moment later a tall, wirey Hispanic girl emerged from the office with a saddle. Fliss followed, bridle slung over her shoulder and gestured for Mary to follow. Frank watched as the girl skipped off following and headed after her at a slower pace, rubbing at his neck which felt like it was burning. He’d slathered Mary in sunscreen before but of course had forgotten his own.
He stepped into the relative cool of the barn and watched as the stable hand was explaining to Mary what each piece of tack was as she began to place it onto the pony. He knew Mary would be taking all of this in, just like she did with everything, and Roberta would be hearing all about it later on.
Fliss handed over the bridle and stepped back, heading towards Frank. “I normally do have the ponies ready” she said, almost apologetically “But I thought she’d enjoy this bit.” “You thought right.” Frank laughed “I was just thinking to myself she’ll be chewing our neighbour’s ear off later.”
Fliss smiled and they both stood in silence watching until the other girl said they were ready.
“Alright, let’s go!” Fliss grinned and they walked out into the yard. She took the pony from her staff member with a thanks, and walked with Mary following into the riding paddock. Frank leaned on the fencing outside as Fliss led Mary and Monty over to the wooden mounting block at the side.
“Ok, so…” she turned to Mary and patted the top step “Climb up here…” Mary hopped up.
“Left foot in this stirrup,” she instructed. Mary placed her foot in. “Left hand here,” she guided it to the front of the saddle, “and then I want you to swing your right leg over.” Mary did as she was told, sitting down on the saddle.
“Good stuff kiddo!” Fliss smiled as she checked the stirrups “Ok, so we need to put these up a hole so…”
She busied herself shortening the stirrup leathers, and eventually when she was happy she nodded.
“So, what we’re gonna do for today is a bit of walking around, and stopping, and then if you’re happy with your balance we can try a bit of trot ok?” Mary grinned.
“Right…so take your reins…” Fliss showed her how to hold the reins correctly, and then she slipped the lunge line through the ponies bit and looked at the girl. “If you feel wobbly or anything you grab this…” she said, gesturing to the leather strap around the pony’s neck. “And shout to me ok?”
Mary nodded.
Fliss began to walk besides the pony who followed her like a dog. Mary all the time concentrating on what she was doing. Fliss explained to her how her legs made the animal go, and how to make it stop, and they practiced that for five minutes before Fliss moved slightly further away to let Mary take a bit of control, instructing her to go, then stop, go, then stop…
Frank watched intently. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t slightly nervous about Mary falling off but he knew that he had to let her discover all this for herself. He leaned further over on the fence, watching and couldn’t help but smile at the look on Mary’s face, she was concentrating so hard her brow was furrowed, tongue poking out from the side of her mouth.
“Your kid?” a deep voice with a similar accent to Fliss said and he turned to his right to see a tall, stocky guy in his sixties, maybe, dressed in a white T-shirt and jeans looking at him.
“Neice.” he nodded, “First lesson.” “Ahh...” the man chuckled “Yeah I remember Fliss’ first lesson. I crapped myself.” Frank let out a laugh “Yeah, I’m a little nervous.” “Bill Gallagher” The man stuck his hand out “Fliss’ dad.” “Nice to meet you, I’m Frank.” Bill looked at him, nodding before his attention turned to the paddock “Hey, Titch, sorry to interrupt…” Fliss stopped the pony and turned to her dad “Hey.” “Fencing is done but I can’t get that bloody tractor started, so the field’s gonna have to wait.” “I can look at it.” Frank offered immediately “I mean, if you want.” Bill turned to him, “You a mechanic?” “No he’s a sailor.” Fliss shot back and Frank rolled his eyes.
“I fix boats. Engines, that type of thing.” “Huh.” Bill nodded appraisingly. “Well if you wouldn’t mind…” “Not a problem. Mary you okay here if I go for a minute?” Mary looked at him “Dur.” Bill let out a chuckle as Frank turned to him “Tell me raising them gets easier.” “Oh no mate.” Bill shook his head, grinning “You just get different shit to deal with.” Frank followed the man round to the back of the barn and spotted a dark green baby tractor. Bill explained what it was doing and Frank crouched closer to have a look before he headed to his truck for the jump leads.
After ten minutes or so he’d found the problem. They could start it, but it wasn’t holding any charge. Meaning when the turned the engine off it needed jump starting again.
“I’m pretty sure it’s the alternator.” he chewed his lip, stepping back “I’ll need to strip it down to see whether I can repair it or if it needs a new one but we can get it started again you can do what you need to do for today.”
Bill nodded “So not quite ready for the scrap heap?” “Not quite.” Frank smiled, wiping his hands on his jeans “Just needs a bit of a fiddle with.” “Don’t we all?” Bill quipped, making Frank laugh. They jump started it again and Bill thanked him before hopping on and heading over to the gate that led to the field.
By the time Frank returned, he was surprised to see that Mary was now riding the pony almost unaided in a circle around Fliss who was holding the end of the line attached to the Monty’s bridle as it trotted around. Mary was gripping the strap round the pony’s neck and trying to rise in time to the trot. It was clumsy and she was a little bit out of balance but that didn’t matter. He could hear Fliss shouting gentle encouragement to her, counting out the rhythm and eventually Mary fell in time with her counts.
“Good!” Fliss beamed “see, I told you you’d get it…” This continued for another 5 minutes or so before Fliss told Mary to slow Monty down to a walk and give him a good pat. They walked the pony around for a while, to give him chance to cool down a little before Fliss walked towards Mary gathering up the line as she went.
“That was awesome for a first go!” she said, smiling “Did you enjoy it?”
Mary nodded “Yeah, it was really cool!”
“Good!” Fliss said. “Now I’m gonna unclip the line and walk around for a bit. He’ll follow me but when I stop I want you to stop him yeah?”
Mary nodded eagerly and she unclipped the line and began to walk. Fliss knew Monty would stop when she did but she wanted to let Mary have a go anyway. They did a lap of the paddock and on the second she stopped by Frank.
“Look, Frank!” Mary smiled “I’m not on the line.” “Yeah, I see!” he smiled at her “Good job!”
“How’s my tractor?” Fliss asked.
“Think it’s the alternator. We got it started for your dad but I’ll need to strip it down properly…I can come back tomorrow and sort it properly if you want?” “Oh, I don’t wanna put you out.” Fliss started to protest but Frank shook his head
“It’s no bother, honestly.” he ran his hand through his hair. “I can’t promise I can fix it but I’ll be able to see if I can or if you need a new one.” Fliss looked at him and then nodded “Alright, but in that case today is free.” “No, that’s not why I offered.” Frank began to protest but Fliss shook her head
“I know.” she smiled that damned gorgeous smile again, and Frank felt his stomach flip. “But I’d like to.” Frank looked at her for a moment, her brown eyes locked onto his and he swallowed, nodding. “Ok, thanks.” “Wait am I coming back tomorrow?” Mary asked
“I’m booked up, sorry sweetie.” Fliss looked at her “But you’re welcome to come anyway, that is if Frank says its okay. You can always give Monty a groom.” “We’ll see. “Frank looked at Mary.
“I can put her to work.” Fliss said, grinning “Nothing like a bit of child labour.” “That’s illegal.” Mary said.
“I won’t tell if you don’t.” Fliss looked at her and Frank gave a chuckle.
They made their way out of the paddock and Fliss showed Mary how to swing her leg back round the saddle and slide down. She landed on her feet and took the reins from Fliss’ hand, leading the pony back to his stable. She helped untack and then Fliss handed her the bridle to carry. They walked into the office and Fliss tapped a code into the door to the left and led them into a tidy tack room, rows of saddles and racks adorned the wall along with bridle pegs and a few shelves full of rugs and blankets for the horses. Fliss slipped the saddle onto a spare rack and then directed Mary to Monty’s bridle peg. Frank took the bridle from her as the peg was a little high and hooked it over.
“Now, you need a drink.” Fliss looked at Mary “I got water or some apple juice.”
“Apple please.”  Mary said. Fliss nodded and headed back into the office, giving her a juice box from the fridge “Frank?”
“Oh, errr, water would be great thanks.” She handed him a bottle and he screwed off the tap.
“So, do you want to book in again now or do it tomorrow?” Fliss looked at him. “I think she’ll cope on the group lesson fine.” “So when do they run?”  Frank asked, swallowing his water.
“Saturday afternoons at two.” Fliss said. “Or Wednesday at six.” “Can we come Saturday?” Mary asked.
Frank hesitated “I did say you couldn’t do this every week.” “Yeah but you didn’t pay for today.” Mary shot back.
Jesus Christ
He glanced up at Fliss who was biting her lip, trying not to laugh.
“Fine, you can come this Saturday but then that’s it, we go to every other week like we agreed, okay?” Mary nodded.
“Settled, I’ll book you in.” Fliss grinned. “If you get here about quarter to I’ll introduce you to the other girls before you join.” Mary frowned a little, before she recovered and nodded. “Okay.” “So do you like work here every day?” Frank asked and Fliss nodded
“Mostly. If I want a day off then I get Joanne to cover the lessons and the girls can open and close up.” she said “But it’s few and far between. Like I said, still in the early days so…”
Frank nodded “Yeah I know what it’s like, trying to get yourself established.” “I take it you’re a self-employed sailor then?” Fliss smiled and he gave a grin back and nodded.
“He takes me for rides.” Mary said “In the boats sometimes.” “That’s really cool. I’ve never been on speedboat.” Fliss mused.
“You should come with us one day, right Frank?”
Frank hesitated a little, surprised to find that he wasn’t filled with dread at the idea of her joining them.
“I’m sure Fliss has enough to be doing without you demanding more of her time.” he shot the girl a look, his tone even.
“Yeah, I’m very busy.” Fliss smiled, offering him a way out. He shot her a thankful look.
“We can do it when you’re free…” “Mary!” Frank’s tone was exasperated as Fliss laughed.
“Maybe one day.” she said, nodding.
This placated the girl somewhat and she bounced off towards the truck.
“Sorry.” Frank turned to Fliss “She can be a little bit…” “Tenacious?” “I was gonna say a pain in the ass.” Frank shrugged, causing Fliss to laugh, her soft chuckles made him feel a little warm, or maybe it was the afternoon heat…
“She’s a good kid.” Fliss said gently.
Frank smiled and then jerked his head in the direction of the car park “I better…” “Sure.”
“I’ll drop you a message about tomorrow?” Fliss nodded “Yeah, but don’t put yourself out.” “Well I owe you now for the lesson so…” he shrugged “I’ll see you tomorrow.” “Yeah, guess you will.” Fliss smiled. There was a pause again and Frank nodded, before he turned and headed after Mary. He turned to look over his shoulder at Fliss who was now walking back towards her office before he wandered onto the car park to find Mary was now chewing Bill’s ear off.
“For the love of God.” he mumbled as he drew nearer to find her mid discussion with the man about the Olympics.
“Did you go?” she was asking.
“You bet!” Bill smiled “I’ll tell you something else as well…” “What?” “Those fences are even bigger in real life than they look on the photos.” “It said on the internet she jumped One meter forty!”
“The internet?” Bill asked.
“Yeah, we googled her.” Frank groaned “Mary.” “What?” she looked at him. “I was just saying…” “Well don’t.” He said, “Truck, now…”
“It was nice to meet you Mary.” Bill smiled as the little girl bid him goodbye.
“Sorry.” Frank apologised to him.
“Don’t be silly.” Bill waved his apology off. “She wasn’t doing any harm.”
“I meant about the google thing.” Frank sighed. “We weren’t prying, she was just curious after seeing the medal and…” Bill shook his head “Kids are nosey.” he shrugged.
With another nod he climbed in the truck and turned to Mary with a sigh “What did I say to you about not telling Miss Gallagher we googled her?” “I didn’t.” Mary said “I told her dad.”
There was a pause as Frank contemplated what she had said, and realised technically she was right. He should have closed that particular loop hole. “Smart ass.” He grumbled back, before he clipped in her belt and they left.
***** Fliss was surprised to see Mary wasn’t with Frank the next day. Frank explained he had come straight from the boat yard so she was busy doing some lesson work with their neighbour. “Gives me chance to work without her continually running around causing a nuisance.” he had explained, setting his tools down by the tractor.
Fliss chuckled, “Ok, well, I got another client due in a second so just give me a shout if you need anything.” He nodded. It didn’t take him long to realise he had been right. It was the alternator. He took the engine apart and was leaning over it on the flat bed of his truck when he heard footsteps behind him. He turned to look at Fliss.
“It is the alternator, but it looks like it’s the brushes inside.” he said, “I can fix this.” She nodded, the movement almost imperceptible, and he frowned at the look on her face. She’d glazed over in front of him, eyes were widened, almost like she was stuck in a memory.
And she was. Something about the fact he’d been leaning over the back of a truck, his grubby t-shirt riding up slightly, dirt on his hands and arms had stirred a really inappropriate thought in her head…which in turn had triggered another flashback.
“He was fixing the car.” Fliss looked at John “I offered him a drink, that’s all…” “He was in our kitchen.” John advanced “I saw you looking at him. Admiring him…” “I wasn’t…”
“Don’t LIE TO ME!” John’s voice as loud and then there was a stinging slap to the side of her face, which sent her reeling. As she recovered, the ringing in her ear still loud from the blow, she gently reached up to her cheek, tears stinging her eyes. John’s face was immediately apologetic, and he reached out for her, causing her to shrink back against the counter.
“You hit me.” she gasped.
“Sugar, I’m so sorry.” John stuttered, his eyes filing with tears “I didn’t, you just made me so jealous…I…” He held his arms out and pulled her to him, his hands on her back as he dropped a kiss to her head “I will never do that again, I’m sorry…” “Fliss?”
She started slightly and looked at Frank. “Yeah, sorry, I was…” “Miles away?” he frowned.
“Something like that.” she nodded, shaking her head “Sorry, you said you could fix it?”
“Yeah.” he said “I can take it with me and then I can bring it back Saturday unless you need it before that?”
“No, Saturday’s fine.” she said gently.
“Look, I don’t mean to pry but are you sure you’re ok?” he asked.
“Yeah, I’m good.” she spoke quickly. “Look, I gotta get on and…” “Sure.” he nodded, “I should be going anyway…” She smiled at him, and turned and headed back to the yard.
****
“You clearly triggered something.” Roberta said to Frank wisely as they both sat in his living room later that evening. He’d just finished telling her about the afternoon. “Some kind of memory.”
Frank hmmed his response. “Question is why are you so bothered?” Roberta asked.
“I’m not, I just, well it wasn’t nice to see. She looked so scared.” “Well you said her husband was sent down for assaulting her.” Roberta shrugged “She’s clearly had a lot of trauma. Maybe she just needs a friend.” “Yeah, maybe.”
“Could be good for both of you.” “I know what you’re doing.” Frank looked at her sternly
“I’m not trying to do anything!” Roberta chuckled
“Course you’re not.” he rolled his eyes before he changed the subject.
It wasn’t until he was alone later, that he pulled his phone out to text Fliss. He’d typed out his message, just a perfectly innocent one to check she was okay before he deleted it, shaking his head.
Whatever it was, it really was none of his business. He had enough of his own past demons to live with as it was.
But the more he lay there the more it wound him up. And he couldn’t get the thought of her out of his head.
“Fucks sake,” he grumbled, before he retyped the message and sent it.
**** Fliss was curled up on the sofa watching TV. Her parents were out for the evening so she was making the most of enjoying the space. Her phone went and she leaned over to grab it from the coffee table, unable to stop smiling as she saw who it was from.
“Hey, just wanted to check you were ok after before. I hope I didn’t do anything or say anything that upset or scared you.” The last line made her heart sink. He clearly knew about her past. Her dad had mentioned something about them googling her, and the case had been fairly big news amongst the equestrian circuit so she knew that the story was out there to read. Well, most of it was anyway. She rubbed at her eyes, thinking of how to respond. She hated that even after almost a year of him being out of her life John was till effectively a shadow she couldn’t seem to emerge from.
“It’s not your fault. I get flashbacks sometimes, nothing I can’t handle.”
“Well the past has a way of doing that. Trust me, I know.”
Fliss smiled gently as she tapped out her response. “Yeah, what is it Rafiki says on the Lion King? You can either run from your past or learn from it?”
Little over thirty seconds later he responded.
“Sound advice from a cartoon monkey…not always that easy in real life. If you ever want a non-judgmental ear to talk to, I’m a pretty good listener if you fancy a beer and a chat. Just as friends.” There was just something about this man, something that Fliss couldn’t help but warm to. She wasn’t stupid, the girls at the yard had told her a bit about him, his reputation amongst the ladies…he was a bit of a player from all accounts, but there was something there, something buried deeper, she could just tell. And what’s more, for the first time in years, she felt like she could trust another person other than her family.
It was for that reason she found it so easy to almost, sort of, maybe, possibly accept his invitation.
“I might just hold you to that Sailor.”

“Think we could just.. skip the wedding, perhaps.. stay up here for the evening, run away tomorrow morning, find a little cottage somewhere and grow old together?”
You laugh softly and push playfully on his chest. “Freddie—”
“Doubt mum would even notice,” he replies, gently running his thumb across your cheek and down your neck, across your shoulder blades, over the goosebumps rising on your arms, “she’ll be crying the entire time, anyway. C’mon—” he jokes, pulling you closer to him, “we won’t be missing much, will we?”
“Don’t let your future sister-in-law hear you,” you tell him, wrapping your arms around the back of his neck. “Promise we’ll have some alone time later. You’ve to help the guests when they arrive. Also—you, sir, promised me a few dances, don’t you remember?”
Fred pauses and considers this for a moment. “You sure you want me to embarrass you like that? In front of all these people, no less?”
You laugh again, letting him twirl you on the spot in the middle of Ginny’s bedroom. He tightens his grip around your waist and begins to slowly lean from side to side, careful not to step on your feet. He stifles a bit of a giggle when he notices you watching. “Yes, my love, I want you to embarrass me—for the rest of our lives.”
— -
George, Bill, and Charlie are a few drinks for the worse at this point. The summer heat is dying down, the sun has completely set behind the hills in front of the Burrow. Fred, dancing horrendously next to his twin in the middle of the dance floor but doing his best to pace himself, holds out his hand to you and pulls you into him.
“I love dancing with you,” he says against your ear.
You hum appreciatively as he squeezes your hips and spins you on the spot, and you both glance at Mrs. Weasley in the corner grinning emotionally at all of her sons and their dates on the dance floor. You turn back to Fred and shake your empty drink at him. “In need of a refill, are we?” He grins lazily at you and you say after placing a hand softly to his cheek, “Be back in a jiff, darling.”
You feel a body appear next to you as you approach the table. You turn; a strapping young man in dark colored robes grins at you and sticks out his hand to introduce himself. It’s firm; his smile brightens more when you take his hand in yours and tell him your name.
“Pleasure to meet you,” you reply, turning back to pour yourself another drink.
He takes you by surprise and asks, “Care to dance?”
“Oh, I’m flattered—” you’re nearly tripping over your words now, a bit stunned at how forward he is. You nod to Fred in the middle of the crowd again, “I’ve actually, erm, got to get back to my fiancé.”
“Fiancé?” he asks with wide eyes, but still—there’s something rather flirtatious in the way he’s eyeing you; it doesn’t seem as though he cares at all that you’re engaged. He inches a bit closer. “Young girl like you, already tied up? Shame, really.”
It’s as if this comment alone calls out to Fred like a signal of some sorts, because before you know it, you feel a hand snake itself around your waist, pulling you closer to him. Fred is there; his eyes have darkened slightly, something you’ve noticed happens in bouts of jealousy. His lips form a thin line; it’s always odd to you when Fred becomes irritable, jealous, angry, when normally, he’s the one who’s always having a laugh.
“Can I help you?” he asks, squaring up the man across from him. You can feel his fingers tighten around your hips and it’s hard for you not to laugh at the tickle it’s causing. You clear your throat in an attempt to suppress your laughter.
“You must be the fiancé.”
“Right I am,” Fred says proudly, taking a swig of his drink. He nods in the direction of a few tables on the other end of the tent, “believe there are a few veela looking for a bloke to have a dance with if that’s what you’re interested in; but this beautiful woman,” he turns to you and grins, “is taken. Or have you chosen to ignore the ring, mate?” You peer down quickly at the sparkling ring on your left hand, and back up at the men in front of you.
“You speak for her?”
You place yourself in between the two of them, now both looking like they’re ready to duel, or worse—kill one another; you squeeze Fred’s hand and say to the other, “No, he doesn’t. Once again, I’m flattered, but I really think it’s time you leave. Wouldn’t want to cause a scene in front of the bride and groom,” you say through gritted teeth, “right?”
A bit embarrassed, but mostly a little on edge, he backs away and heads toward the other end of the tent, sipping rather moodily on his drink. You suck in a deep breath and turn back to Fred, whose eyes are still dark.
“I don’t like him.”
You smile cheekily at him. “You don’t say. Ever met him before?”
“N-no,” Fred replies, taken aback by your teasing, “but it doesn’t matter. Did you hear him? ‘You speak for her?’ What a complete git.”
You pull him close to you and whisper against his neck, “You jealous, love?”
“I’m not jealous,” he replies tersely. He swallows thickly when your grin grows larger before continuing, “I just don’t like the way he was looking at you.”
“Yeah?” you ask, “like how?”
“Like he’ll fall in love.” Fred replies, moving your hair gently out of your face.
“Yeah, well, he can fall in love all he wants,” you tell Fred now, pulling gently on his tie, “but he’s not the one who gets to take me home, is he?”
You know you’ve said the right thing; Fred’s lips curl into a sensual smile and he bites down on his bottom lip, probably to keep himself from jumping on you right then and there. He hums appreciatively before nipping at your neck, “Oh no he isn’t.”
— -
You’re both gently gliding along the dance floor, the soft sounds of harps and piano floating through the air between the guests. Then suddenly, there are a few audible gasps coming from outside the tent where the aurors are standing guard; Fred is tightening his hold around you, a bluish white ball of light shoots through the tent, landing right in the middle of the crowd, only to take the form of a lynx.
And Fred is grabbing your hand tightly, pulling you toward his brothers, and aurors are shouting directions at everyone, and Lupin is rushing the tent when suddenly, black hooded figures enter unannounced and uninvited, the screams of guests and the quick whipping sounds of others Disapparating are filling your ears.
You grab your wand from the pocket of your dress, watching as Harry, Ron, and Hermione Disapparate as Lupin shouts, Bill rushing to protect Fleur at all costs, Fred and George back to back as they shield you and Ginny from any spells or curses headed your direction.
Someone’s shouting angrily about the whereabouts of Harry Potter, Mrs. Weasley is yelling in horror, Lupin is firing spells left and right. Ginny hoists herself on top of a table, Mr. Weasley is dragging her down, George grabs your arm and screams “no!” as Fred closely misses a stunning spell by mere centimeters. Fred pulls you and Ginny together and moves you in the direction of a table. “Under here!” he screams, the force of his weight bearing down on you both.
“No!” Ginny yells, tears streaking her face as, undoubtedly, thinks of the safety of her loved ones. This time, it’s Charlie who’s pushing her down, attempting to shield her yet again, from any spells or curses aimed for you both.
“Let me out!” you scream and push passed Charlie and into the arms of Fred, whose eyes are darker than usual, concern plastered across his face.
“It’s too dangerous!” he yells before wrapping his arms around you and forcing you behind him, only to hit another Death Eater with a stunning spell. It’s as if his words alone are enough to sober him up. “You need to get back—now! Where’s Ginny?”
“No!” you yell over the screams of the guests, “I’m not leaving you!”
Your words are drowned out by the sounds of cries, mock laughter, explosive balls of light, and the crumbling of debris around you as a spell hits you and sends you flying backward, slamming into chairs and tables and nearly knocking you out cold.
And in a half conscious, half awake, barely breathing, horrendous state, you catch glimpses of George shielding his sister, Death Eaters being knocked back by the others, Fred’s tear soaked face as he slings an arm around you and pulls you up from the floor, until before you know it, you’re Apparating Merlin only knows where.
— -
You’re watching from the entrance of Shell Cottage as the sun begins to rise, Fred next to you, asleep on your shoulder, the sound of his breathing like a soothing balm to your soul. Suddenly you feel a blanket wrap around your shoulders and peer up at George, who smiles softly and places a gentle kiss to your forehead before retreating back into the house. “Breakfast should be ready soon.”
“Thanks, Georgie,” you say. Your voice is hoarse in your ears; it sounds strange. Like it’s not even yours. Fred stirs for a moment before fully waking, his eyes bloodshot and tired and weak, only having slept for maybe twenty or so minutes.
There’s silence hanging in the air between you both. You swallow a few times—your throat is extremely dry, it feels like you haven’t eaten or had anything to drink in days. It’s scary that it’s only been a few long hours since the wedding.
“It’s really happening now, isn’t it?” you ask suddenly. The words sound foreign in your mouth. Fred lifts his head in surprise, peers at you solemnly for a moment before squeezing your hand.
He watches a few tears escape your eyes. “Yes,” he replies, and still, it seems so strange to see him in such a serious, stoic state. It makes you feel off balance. You don’t like it. You shudder for a moment and wiggle your way closer to him under the blanket. “But I promise to do everything I can to protect you.”
You wonder, selfishly now, if maybe you should take up Fred’s offer from the day before. Run away, find a small house somewhere far away, grow old together. You wipe a few tears away with your sleeves before turning to face him. You can see tears welling up in his eyes, to. But it’s not long before he’s making you smile and you’re letting laughs escape your lips with no effort. “But we’ve just got to finish this, haven’t we? Reckon those slimy Death Eaters don’t stand a chance—”
And yes, he’s making you laugh, and he’s grinning broadly at you, but the memory of last evening’s events, and the thoughts of events to come, hover over the both of you like a storm cloud ready to release the rain. His voice is a bit shaky when he tells you softly, “We’ll be okay, you know.”
“I hope so.” you reply.
“Besides,” he continues, taking your hand in his and examining the still sparkling ring, “I promised to embarrass you for the rest of our lives, right? Our wedding being the prime spot for it!”
“You’re ridiculous, you are.”
“Yeah,” he replies, kissing your forehead, “but you still agreed to be my wife, anyway.”
And soon, Bill is calling the both of you for breakfast, Ginny is bringing you both steaming cups of morning tea, marking the start of a new, stranger beginning as you both peer in front of you, once more, at the blending of sea and sky.

Set Up
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader
Words: ~3.3k
Summary: In which the Avengers are relentless in their attempts to get you and Steve together. If this means going great lengths such as sending you off on a mission-disguised romantic getaway to make you realize your feelings for one another, they’ll seize the chance at the very moment it’s presented to them.
Warnings: None. Just tooth-rotting fluff bc I’ve really been needing it ahaha
A/N: Set in an AU 2017 timeline in which they reunite a year after the whole Accords situation so that everyone’s happy :)
Tumblr media
"Rogers. Parasite. Stop watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine and get up, you need to get to the meeting room ASAP," Tony stated.
"Says the one who leeches off my granola bar supply," you grumbled as you shot him a death glare. "You've been doing this to me since I was a toddler. A helpless, two-year old against a 16 year-old demon always hungry for everyone's food but his own."
"Still holding the Full House cereal incident against me? Geez, woman, do you ever release your grudges against anyone," he sighed, rolling his eyes. "Now come on, let's go."
Exchanging a confused look with Steve, you stood up and followed Tony down the hallway to the meeting room, where Fury was with the rest of the team, waiting.
"Captain Rogers, Agent Y/N," Fury nodded curtly. "I presume you know what's going on?"
"No, sir."
"I need you two to track down a group of mercenaries in downtown Tokyo. You'll be flown out commercially so you can maintain a low profile. The whole process should take no longer than ten days," he explained as Natasha handed him the printed out flight details. "Further information will be given to you upon arrival."
"If it's just the two of us, then why is everyone here?" you pointed out.
"Barton and Maximoff will be checking in with you regularly; and if backup is necessary, I will fly one of them out to meet you. If you don't have any more questions, this meeting is now dismissed. You'll be departing late tonight so if I were you, I'd get to packing right about now."
...
Soon enough you were all packed and ready to go. Because you were too lazy to reach back into your suitcase and grab a sweatshirt, you took Steve's Dodgers hoodie and slipped it on, along with a pair of your favorite sweatpants.
"See you in ten days, okay?" Natasha pulled you in for a tight hug. "Make sure to keep Rogers company, it's a long flight. This is also the perfect opportunity to grow closer...literally."
"Oh shut up, Nat," you scoffed. "We're not...you know."
"Sure you aren't."
"Tony, why don't you get some good rest for once," you turned to your brother, "alright?"
"As long as you admit you're in love with Capsicle," he whispered into your ear.
"I can't admit what's not true."
"Yeah yeah, I can't understand bullshit."
"Tony."
"Y/N," he mocked. "Anyway. Have a safe trip, don't die, yada yada yada."
"Yeah yeah, got it."
A few more rounds of goodbyes later, you and Steve were in the elevator with your luggage, heading down to where Phil was waiting to drive you to the airport.
Your flight was scheduled to take off at 1:45 in the morning, and it was close to 11 p.m when you arrived.
"Your tickets, please," the lady asked as you were about to board the plane. You took them out from your purse and handed them over to her. "Thank you."
"How long's the flight again?"
"Uh...about 14 hours. Pretty long," you replied, as you walked down the aisles, looking at the overhead letters for your seat. "24A, 24B...there we go. Wait, have you been to Japan before?"
"No, I haven't."
"You're gonna love it. They have the best, I tell you, best ramen, and curry, hands down. When Nat, Wanda, and I went on our girls' vacation last spring we wouldn't stop eating for two days straight. I know we're tracking down cold-blooded killers and all, but, it won't hurt to let loose a little, you know?"
"Yeah, definitely," Steve couldn't help but smile at how happy you looked while speaking. "You gotta be our tour guide. I'm trusting you'll lead us to the best ramen hotspots?"
"Oh yeah, I will."
After putting your things into the overhead bins, you settled into your seats. The armrest between you could be lifted convert the seats into a double bed, you quickly found out.
Shortly after taking off you felt yourself grow rather tired. Noticing your sleepiness, Steve raised the armrest and pressed the button to make the seats recline backwards, your head immediately falling against his broad chest. He smiled again, brushing stray hairs away from your forehead before pulling the blanket over your bodies and falling asleep as well.
Little did either one of you know, you were being sent off to Japan for a completely different reason that had absolutely nothing to deal with tracking down mercenaries.
...
The smell of food wakes you up several hours later. You stretched your arms up and ran a hand through your hair as you sat up, adjusting your neck pillow.
"Hey uh, how long were we out for?" you asked, voice still thick with sleep. Steve was already awake, in the middle of watching a movie on his TV.
"4 hours. You knocked out for 5. It's time for lunch...or dinner?"
You tapped your screen a few times to pull up the map of your flight's route. "Right now it's 7:30 p.m. in Tokyo. We're arriving at 4:45 in the morning, so I'd say dinner."
"You sleep okay?"
"Hm? Yeah," you yawned, rubbing your eyes and adjusting the sleeves of Steve's hoodie. "You make a good pillow."
"No problem," he chuckled. You then turned to the flight attendant, who handed you your meals.
"Fancy," you nodded in approval as you passed Steve's tray over to him. "First class sure has its perks...oh yes, miso soup."
You binged your way through several episodes of Pretty Little Liars, I Love Lucy, and Star Wars: A New Hope together. Afterwards, you purchased Wi-Fi so you could update the team on your status.
CHATROOM - AVENGERS ASSEMBLE
Natasha: Morning, lovebirds. You guys in the air already?
You: Yeah, we're eating dinner right now. What time is it back home?
Tony: 6:45 a.m. Pulled an all-nighter binge-watching The Office.
Bucky: Totally worth losing an entire night's worth of good sleep.
Y/N: But I still don't get why we couldn't take the Quinjet?
Steve: ^
Rhodey: Do we tell them now, or wait until they land in Haneda?
Wanda: I'd say now.
Pietro: NO NO NO MAKE IT A SURPRISE
Steve: ...What's going on?
Tony: There's no mission.
Y/N: Wait, what? Then what are we going to Tokyo for?
Tony: I purchased a romantic ten-day vacation package so that you two will hopefully realize your feelings for each other along the way. Thank me later.
Y/N: SCREW YOU
Tony: Enjoy eating all the ramen you want!
Natasha: We're so good at matchmaking.
Thor: May I suggest a virtual high-five?
Peter: VIRTUAL HIGH-FIVE :))
Thor: :))
Y/N has left the chat.
Steve has left the chat.
Tony: They're gonna thank me when they see the penthouse I bought.
Tony has left the chat.
"Well, guess we're going on vacation. At least there's more opportunities to eating good food," Steve shrugged.
"Yup." You felt your heartbeat pick up speed at the thought of being alone with him, for ten days, in a country that was considered both futuristic and romantic at the same time. "Plenty of time to eat ramen and sushi."
Deep down, he was glad that there wasn't any mission. And so were you.
You took an hour-long catnap before waking up again and playing a few rounds of Uno with him, then stayed up for the rest of the flight. You both knew you'd regret doing so because of the 13-hour time difference between NYC and Tokyo, but you were too excited to care at that moment.
You were dazed and still slightly tired when you disembarked the aircraft, so you didn't have any energy to question how you and Steve ended up with your fingers intertwined. Besides, you liked the way it felt.
At close to 5 in the morning, Haneda International was relatively quiet and not too busy, so immigration didn't take long. You didn't have to worry about being bombarded by fans, aside from the occasional foreign fan recognizing you two and asking for a quick autograph or picture.
Since you wanted to explore the airport a bit before taking the train downtown, you looked around at the various shops.
Being a former spy alongside Natasha before joining the Avengers, you were fluent in multiple languages, including Japanese, Russian, French, Spanish, and German. And despite having developed the habit of always preparing for what was to come, you were completely shocked hearing a perfect Japanese sentence roll out of Steve's mouth as he spoke to the cashier.
You practically swooned at how smooth his voice sounded.
"Kore wa ikuradesu ka?" He gestured to one of the kokeshi dolls on display dressed in a sapphire colored kimono with cherry blossom embroidery. (How much is this?)
"3500 yen," the lady replied, "Hatsubai-chū, 3000. Kōnyū shimasu ka?" (On sale, 3000. Would you like to buy it?)
"Hai, kōnyū shimasu." (Yes, I'd like to buy it.)
"Kanojo no tame ni?" (For her?)
"Hai." (Yes.)
She nodded, and Steve handed over several folded bills from his wallet after she finished bagging the item.
"Arigato, gokigen'yō," he thanked her. (Thank you, have a nice day)
"Anata modesu," she smiled warmly. (You too)
"Holy crap, you didn't tell me you were fluent in Japanese, Rogers," you gaped as you walked out of the store together. "When did you have the time to learn it?"
"Back during the Pearl Harbor bombing, Buck and I were sent off with the 107th to Hawaii. Figured it'd be useful if we learned a few phrases."
"Few?" you raised an eyebrow at him. "What you just did back there, that was not just a few phrases! That was fluency!"
"What can I say, I pick up on language quickly," he grinned, rubbing the back of his neck. He then handed you the bag with the doll inside. "Here, for you."
"You didn't have to—"
"Consider it my thank-you in advance for taking me to a good eatery," Steve explained.
After grabbing a quick breakfast of coffee and pastries, you took the elevator down to the train station.
You let out a sigh as you sat down, the cool air inside the train loosening the tension in your shoulders a bit. A short fifteen minutes later and you were back in one of your favorite cities in the world.
Steve took a picture of you as you were distracted from looking all around at the skyscrapers and people milling around, face lit up by all the bright and colorful signs, sending it to the chat.
Steve: Just arrived downtown. Got out of the airport half an hour ago.
Tony: Honeymooning Avengers, how cute
Sam: That's hot.
Steve: What time is it over there?
Wanda: We just finished eating lunch. You?
Steve: 7. Going to check into the penthouse. Talk to you guys later.
Wanda: Alright.
Sam: Have fun, lovebirdssssss
Steve has left the chat.
"So," he breathed out as he slipped his hand back into yours and you exited the station, "you ready to go check out where we're staying?"
"Yeah, definitely. You wanna take the subway again, or a taxi?"
"Subway. Actually..taxi. You sound nice when you speak in a foreign language."
"That's the only reason why you want to take a taxi?"
"Yeah, obviously," you scoffed. "I mean, why else?"
"Alright, if you insist," the super-soldier laughed.
A few minutes later, you'd called a taxi over and climbed into the backseat, strapping your seatbelts on.
"Ohayögozaimasu," (Good morning) the man greeted. "Ogenkidesuka?" (How are you) "Īdesu, anata wa?" Steve replied. (Good, and you?)
"Watashi mo jōzudesu. Doko ni ikitai?" (I am good, too. Where would you like to go?)
You looked at your phone, reading out the address of Tony's penthouse to the driver.
A few minutes passed in silence before he spoke up again. "Watashia wa anata-tachi o shitte imasu. Anata wa abenjãzudesu," the driver smiled, glancing at you two from the rearview mirror. (I know you two. You're the Avengers)
"Watashitachidesu," he returned his friendly grin. (We are!)
"Tōkyō ni kuru kikkake wa nanidesu ka?" (What made you come to Tokyo?)
"Chōdo kyūka no tame." (Just for vacation.)
"Nokori no taizai o o tanoshimi kudasai," he said as you were getting out of the car after paying. "Sayonara."
"Sayonara," you and Steve responded before closing the car door behind you.
"Wow," your jaw dropped as you took the elevator up, arriving at the top floor. "Tony actually bought...this...place?"
"Apparently," Steve shrugged, "we could come back and forth between here and the compound as often as we wanted."
The penthouse had a nice, dark aesthetic feel to it, with giant panoramic views of the entirety of Tokyo and modern furniture and spots of dimmed white lights in the ceiling to give off a relaxed vibe.
After unloading your things, you sat down at the giant couch together and decided to plan out the rest of your day.
"When CoCo Curry opens at 11, we can go eat there," you explained as you typed up the plan in a new note. "Tony also snagged us tickets to Tokyo Tower at 3 p.m, so we have a few hours to spare after lunch."
"We can explore the gardens,"  he suggested. "I know you love doing that. There's a botanical garden in Shinjuku we can go to."
"Oh, that one! I didn't have the chance to go last time, so that's perfect," you added 'Shinjuku Gardens' to your list.
Soon enough you had your entire day planned out, and were ready to head out once again.
CoCo Curry was a quaint, little restaurant that hit you with a wave of tantalizing scents as soon as you walked through the doors and sat down at the bar-style seating area where you could watch the chefs cook your food.
"Gonichiwa," you greeted the chef standing behind the counter.
"Gonichiwa," he smiled back. He asked for your orders, and since Steve wasn't sure what to get you had two orders of your favorite dish.
Besides another couple sitting a few seats away, the restaurant was empty so you got your food in under ten minutes. The steaming hot plates of curry rice were set in front of you, and you felt your mouth water as you inhaled the rich aroma.
"This is so good," Steve spoke in between bites. "I'm literally in love."
"Told you I knew my stuff."
You eventually finished eating, and after getting into a small argument with Steve over who would pay (He ended up winning). "It's payback for ordering me good eats," he explained.
"You said that when you bought me the kokeshi doll," you pointed out.
"Still."
This time you decided to go by foot instead of taking the taxi, as the gardens were only a half-hour or so walk from where you were.
"Right in the middle of cherry blossom season," you sighed as the sweet smell of cherries drifted through the air. "Perfect timing."
You walked around the entire place, stopping every so often to admire the various colorful plants or look up at the pastel pink cherry blossom trees, gravel crunching underfoot with each step you took.
The mid-April breeze lightly fanned your hair around your shoulders. Birds chirped out a delightful melody, flying around the cornflower-blue sky. It wasn't too hot or too cold, and that was one of the many things you loved about visiting Asia during the springtime; the weather was bearable, compared to New York City's below-freezing temperatures in winter. You vividly remembered visiting the botanical gardens in upstate New York on a school trip once, and from then on you'd grown attached.
In the centre of the garden was a large lake with flowering lily pads and on the other side of the bank stood a quaint little temple, with a wooden bridge across the middle so visitors could cross over and look at the koi below.
"It's beautiful here," Steve commented as you made your way down the sidewalk, "I wish they had places like this back home."
"Yeah it is, isn't it," you breathed out, unable to tear your eyes away from the lovely sights. "I could do this all day."
"Hey, that's my line," he joked. You chuckled quietly, slipping your hand into his. He laced your fingers together in response, and you felt the butterflies flutter around in your stomach again the longer he held on, and those butterflies turned into hummingbirds as you looked up to meet his piercing gaze.
You're not sure how long you stay like that, gazing into each others' eyes, but it's only when a little girl stops and asks to take a picture that you pull away.
"Captain America and Agent Y/N!" Judging by her looks, she seemed like she came from the US as well. "Can I get a picture with you guys?"
"Of course, sweetie," you smiled. You brushed off the weird feeling you got when your skin made contact with Steve's, and gestured for her to come closer.
Steve scooped the girl up into his arms as she held your hand, and the mother snapped a few quick pictures before he let her back down.
"Thank you!" she exclaimed before skipping away.
At 2:20 you decided to leave and head out to the Tokyo Tower early so you would be avoiding any possible long lines. You were up at the observation deck within twenty minutes.
"This is just....wow," you breathed out, in awe of the breathtaking view you got as you stared out the panoramic windows, the reflective walls casting thin rays of light onto your faces.
If you thought the view from your penthouse was nice, this was a hundred times better. You had almost nothing preventing you from being able to see the entire city in all directions. The sun was hanging high in the sky, the skyscrapers piercing the horizon like pins and needles.
Steve couldn't help but let his gaze linger on you, the way your face brightened up at the sight of Tokyo's stunning view, the way you laughed and smiled more than you ever did back home. It was a rare sight, and he wished he could see you in this state more often. Oh, the things he'd do to keep hearing your musical laugh and million-dollar smile.
...
The next day was jam-packed with activities. You took a two hour train ride down south to Osaka, exploring the cup noodles museum, shopping downtown in Dotonbori, and stuffing yourself with delicious pastries along the way. Before you headed back, you decided to stock up on groceries at the local market.
You fell asleep almost as soon as your head hit the pillow that night, waking up to somehow finding yourself in Steve’s arms. You both woke up at the same time, confused as to how you had gotten yourselves into this position, but were too embarrassed and tired to ask.
This time, you decided to stay within Tokyo, immersing yourselves in going to as many districts as you could and doing as much as possible.
After a long day exploring the city, you were rather exhausted. With a cup of freshly brewed matcha in hand, you stayed quiet for a while as you soaked in the scenery, watching the city come alive late at night.
When Steve woke up from his nap a few hours later, he found you standing by the window. Smiling to himself, he got up, approaching you and wrapping his arms around your waist from behind, resting his chin atop your head.
"Hi," you greeted, setting your mug down on the coffee table besides you.
"Hey," he murmured into your ear. You closed your eyes and hummed quietly in response, letting your bodies rock back and forth to the rhythm of your steady heartbeats together.
"Watashi wa, anata o aishiteimasu," (I love you.)
A small smile tugged at the corners of your lips. "Watashi mo anata o aishitemasu, Cap." (I love you too, Cap.)
You stepped away so you could turn around to face him, and he pulled you back towards him and pressed his lips to yours.
He couldn't help but smile into the kiss, pulling you closer against him.

Dani updates something. The world must be truly coming to an end. Read below or here on AO3
Like most great wars, it was started by something small.
Kagome picked up her laptop from where it had been sitting on the coffee table and carried it into her bedroom, rubbing her eyes tiredly. Perhaps it hadn’t been a good idea to invite Inuyasha over for movie and pizza, but when she’d texted him earlier in the day and heard about his crap day at work, she’d extended an impromptu invite. Sango hadn’t minded, and it had been fun, even if he did spend most of the night using her laptop to debunk theories in the spy thriller they’d watched.
When he’d first arrived, he’d been his usual grumpy self, but by the end of the movie, he was in an excellent mood. It was nice to see him happy, although she wasn’t exactly sure what had caused the change in attitude. The pizza had probably helped. She’d never seen anyone consume pizza like Inuyasha could. It worried her sometimes, the types of food he ate, even though he argued that an inuhanyou’s metabolism was very different to a human’s and you couldn’t compare the two.
Anyway, it didn’t matter. If her friend was happy, then so was she. He had such a nice smile, and she tried to do her best to help it come out at every opportunity. They were just friends, she knew that, but his smile was just… it gave her butterflies.
Calling out a sleepy goodnight to Sango, she wandered into her bedroom yawning, wishing she could flop straight onto the bed and close her eyes. But unfortunately, she still had the proposed media releases for the Starlight Foundation’s upcoming fundraiser event to read through before a breakfast meeting tomorrow. She knew if she’d stayed to go over them at work she’d have to walk home from the train station in the dark, so she’d emailed them to her personal laptop before she’d left for the day.
Slipping into her comfy pj’s and snuggling under the covers, she opened up her laptop, then blinked slowly, her head tilting slightly as she tried to make sense of what she was seeing.
Everything was upside down.
Her whole screen was the opposite of how it should look. She exited out of her email program, noting with apprehension that her desktop was also upside down, then opened it up again. Still upside down. Crap! Was this a virus? She’d let the virus protection on her laptop lapse because she’d had to buy a new dress to wear to the fundraising ball, and she’d seen the perfect dress and there’d been a sale, and she had to get the extra money from somewhere. What if it the virus somehow got back to her work computer? Shit, shit, shit!
Quickly googling ‘everything on my computer screen is upside down’, and tilting the screen and her head so she could read the upside down words, she breathed a sigh of relief when she worked out it was an easy fix. Using the Ctrl, Alt and arrow keys she quickly set it to rights, sending up a silent thank you prayer to the IT gods, with a promise that she would update her virus protection asap. She wasn’t sure how her screen had got that way, but right now she was too tired to care.
The next evening, when she sat down with Sango to watch the latest episode of Masterchef, the tv remote refused to work. With their cider going warm and the avocado dip congealing on the cheese platter they’d prepared, they both tried to get the remote to work, giving it a tap and shake to no avail.
After repeated attempts at removing the batteries and rotating them, while Sango went through the junk drawer in the kitchen in a fruitless search for new batteries, Kagome finally noticed the tiny scrap of black tape over the sensor on the remote.
She removed it, and the remote worked again. She looked suspiciously at Sango, narrowing her eyes. She smelled a prank. But Sango loved watching Masterchef as much as she did, and was complaining bitterly about them missing a souffle failure. Masterchef was one of the highlights of their week. Nope, it wasn’t Sango. But someone was definitely having fun at their expense.
Two nights later, when she bit into an Oreo from her secret treat stash in her bedside drawer, and found the sweet creamy filling had been replaced with toothpaste, she knew there was a prank war going on. And as far as she knew, there was only one person who knew about her secret stash, because he’d busted her one night stuffing her face when he’d popped his head in her room to say good night.
Inuyasha.
He’d had time to do all these things on their movie night. He’d used her laptop. He’d had access to the remote. And now that she thought about it, there’d been that suspicious amount of time he’d spent in the bathroom, which neither of them had questioned because he’d muttered a warning about steering clear of the bathroom for a while to give the air a chance to clear. But that would have enabled him access to both the bathroom and her bedroom while her and Sango were engrossed in the movie. No wonder he’d been so cheerful that evening when he left. Inuyasha had pranked her.
But what he didn’t know, was that Kagome was a seasoned campaigner when it came to prank wars. Her and Souta had it down to a fine art, coming up with bigger and better pranks all the time, to the point that one year her mother hand banned them totally, because things were getting out of hand.
The corners of her mouth turned up in a sinister smile, and she let out a chuckle worthy of a cartoon villain. Alright. If he wanted a war, he’d get one.
It was on, like Donkey Kong.
Inuyasha sighed moodily. It wasn’t that he disliked his job necessarily, it was just a job, and it paid the bills, and gave him enough time off to do all the other things he enjoyed doing. But on days like today, when the shop was empty as a tomb, and his phone battery had gone flat, he was ready to expire from boredom. He was just toying with the idea of using a charging cable from the one’s in stock, when a familiar scent drifted across his senses as the shop bell rang.
“How’s my favourite hanyou doing?” Kagome grinned, watching his ears perk up as she walked in.
“I’m fucking bored to tears”, he said, standing up from where he’d been slumped against the counter. He glanced at the clock on the wall, then looked back at her with concern. “Hey. Aren’t you home from work a little early? You’re not sick are ya?”
“No, no, I’m going to work from home this afternoon, seeing I’ve been going into the office so early this week”, Kagome answered breezily. “I just popped in to bring you something.”
“Huh?”
“I tried out a new recipe for chocolate chip cookies, and I know how much you like them, so I saved some for you. That should make your afternoon more interesting.”
Inuyasha sniffed the tupperware container she handed over appreciatively. Kagome was a good cook, and even though the plastic blocked most of the smell, he could tell they would be tasty, because everything Kagome made was delicious. And chocolate chip cookies were his favourites. Fucking sweet!
“Thanks Kagome! You’re the best, you know that?”
His conscience twitched slightly as he thought about the toothpaste oreo’s he’d hidden in her drawer. He’d had a crap day that day, and playing those little pranks on her had cheered him up immensely. He’d often played pranks on his half brother Sesshoumaru back when he’d come to visit Dad during school holidays, to see if he could budge the stick that the older youkai seemed to have permanently wedged up his arse. The oreo trick had been one of his favourites. But here she was baking for him. Maybe she hadn’t found them yet. Perhaps he could replace them with a whole new packet before she ate one, seeing she’d bought him these. He grinned at her.
“You wanna stay and eat some with me Kittycat?”
“I’m afraid I can’t”, Kagome said with a sorrowful expression. “Lots to do. But I’m sure you’ll enjoy them!” With a cheery wave, she walked out of the door.
Inuyasha smiled, looking down at the container in his hands. She’d put a post it note on the lid, with ‘For Inuyasha’ written in curly swoopy cursive. She was a good friend, had fit into his life so completely that he didn’t know what he’d do if she suddenly disappeared. He was so glad he’d helped her that day she’d walked in to the shop with her bad cold.
Taking off the lid and not even pausing to take a sniff, he picked up one of the delectable looking cookies and stuffed the whole thing in his mouth, chewing appreciatively, until a distinctive taste hit his tongue. He nearly spat the contents of his mouth out on the floor, but ended up swallowing the mouthful with distaste, knowing he’d be the one that would have to clean up the mess. Those weren’t chocolate chips…
 Fucking raisins!
The wench knew he hated them. What the fuck? Who would replace innocent chocolate chips with fucking raisins, the worlds most vile dried fruit – that was… was evil!
The post-it note fluttered off the lid, and he noticed a smiley face drawn on the back with some more of Kagome’s swirling cursive.
‘That’s payback for the Oreos dog boy!  ❤ K.’
He snorted, about to tip the cookies in the bin, then deciding to put them aside to give to Myoga. The old man had taste in his arse, he’d probably love them, especially if he told him Kagome made them. But Kagome. What was he going to do about sweet little innocent Kagome? It looked like he’d finally found a worthy adversary.
It had been two weeks since she’d given Inuyasha the cookies, and there had been no retaliation. She sniggered, remembering his face when she’d asked him how he’d liked his cookies – the rolled eyes, the huff of irritation. Sweet manna to her soul. But then he hadn’t done anything about it. Frankly Kagome was a little disappointed. It was a shame, because she’d really enjoyed baking the biscuits for him and imagining his face when he bit into one, but she guessed that not everyone liked pranks. The Oreo incident had probably been a one off.
She flicked on the lamp next to the sofa, ready to sit down and enjoy her book and her cocoa with the last of the tiny little marshmallows, and shrieked, slopping the hot liquid down her pyjama shirt. Sango came running.
“Kagome, are you okay?!”
“Cockroach!”, she shrieked, pointing at the lamp, ready to hurl her book at it. The shadow of the insect was clearly visible on the inside of the lamp shade. “Quick Sango, get the bug spray!”
“On it!” Sango hollered, running into the kitchen, clearly ready to unload half the can on the offending interloper. Kagome kept her eye locked on the insect, wanting to be ready in case it flew towards her, holding up her book like a shield. The insect was still. Very still. So still in fact she bravely moved closer to take a better look.
She pulled the cut out picture of a giant cockroach from the inside of the lamp and held it up for Sango’s inspection as she approached with a jumbo sized can of spray. Sango looked incredulously at the paper insect, and then back at Kagome, who was looking at the cut out with a strange expression of glee.
“Inuyasha?” asked Sango hesitantly, unsure exactly what was going on, but making an informed guess.
“Yup!” replied Kagome happily, popping the ‘p’ with relish. Looked like Inuyasha was playing a long game. She could do that.
They were strolling along the High Line, or rather Kagome was strolling, and Inuyasha was following along reluctantly. It was only the promise of beer and a burger at the end of this outing that had made him go along.
“Isn’t it lovely here?”
“Kagome, it’s a bridge. With plants on it. And tourists.”
“But it’s so nice! Isn’t it amazing? All these green things growing in the middle of the city.” She twirled around with her arms out wide, nearly taking out some backpackers, then grabbed his hand, dragging him over to a small garden filled with purple daisies.
“Can we take a selfie here together? Please?” She pulled her phone out of her pocket, and then pouted dramatically. “Aw, I’m all out of battery.”
She looked up at Inuyasha and gave him a sweet smile, and he rolled his eyes, shoving his hand in his jeans pocket to pluck out his phone.
“Fine, use mine”, he drawled, unlocking his phone and handing it over to her. “But don’t go filling it up with cutesy photos, alright?” He didn’t mind really though. Kagome was always taking photos of them together on her phone, and he didn’t have any on his. It might be nice to have at least one of them together.
Kagome smiled up at him, and they did the usual shuffle so they would both fit in the confines of the screen – her standing on tiptoes, and him curving his body downwards.
“Say cheese!”
He grinned automatically, his lopsided smile revealing one fang, his cheek resting on the top of Kagome’s head. She’d told him she was using a new shampoo, one that didn’t smell quite as much, after reading up on different scents that bothered youkai, and he appreciated the fact that she’d done something like that for him. He sighed, breathing in her sweet smell, which blocked out the usual stench of the city.
“Thank you” said Kagome softly, mindful of how close she was to his ears. She kissed his cheek gently, and he couldn’t help the sappy grin that crossed his face. “I’m just gonna message the photo to my phone, okay? That way we’ve both got a copy.”
“Uh sure.”
He straightened up, feeling his heart beating a little faster for some reason. He obviously needed to get to the gym more often if walking along a bridge and dodging tourists got his heart rate up.
She handed him back his phone and then tugged on his hand. He slipped his phone back into his pocket.
“C’mon! I promised I’d buy you a beer and a burger. There’s a pub just under the bridge that’s meant to be awesome. I was reading reviews about it last night.”
He smiled fondly at her, taking in her wide grin and the spring sunshine bouncing off her dark hair. Such a bubbly person. He honestly didn’t know what Kagome saw in him. But he was very glad that she liked hanging out.
He had such a fun afternoon talking, laughing, eating, then walking her back to her apartment, that he realised he’d never looked at the photo she’d taken. He pulled his phone from his pocket and unlocked it, then snorted when he looked at his screen. He didn’t know how she’d done it, but somehow, she’d changed every single app icon to different pictures of kittens. Nice one. His lips curled into a smile, already planning on what he could do to get her back.
He flicked open his photo app and stared at the photo of them together, standing in the sunlight surrounded by purple daisies in the middle of a bustling city, the wind blowing their hair so the white and black intermingled. He saved it as his lock screen.
Kagome hated dusting. But she loved knick nacks, so dusting was a necessity. She just couldn’t bear to throw things away, and kept all sorts of little mementoes that wouldn’t mean anything to other people, but meant a lot to her. Spraying a little bit more polish on the rag, she ran it over the shelves of the bookcase in the hallway, picking up a photo frame absentmindedly so she could dust underneath. And then she double blinked.
Taking a closer look at the photo, she snorted with laughter. It was a photo of the four of them, one someone had taken when they’d won the pub trivia championship.
She didn’t know how he’d done it, or when, but somehow Inuyasha had used a photo editing program to replace all their faces, hers, Sango’s, Miroku’s and his own, with the features of Nicholas Cage. Not entirely original, but funny all the same.
She turned the frame over to find the original photo stuck to the back. Miroku had his arm carelessly around Sango’s shoulders and Sango was blushing – no doubt Miroku had just whispered something perverted in her ear.
She was standing next to Sango, and Inuyasha was standing directly behind her, bending down so his chin rested on the top of her head. It made her smile, the way he draped himself on her for photos – it was often the only way they both fit, because he was so much taller than her.
He was so amazing, he took her breath away sometimes, just like he had that first time in the store. It was like he didn’t know how beautiful he was. She turned the photo around again, giggling at how ridiculous they all looked. She had to hand it to him, that was tricky. Time to up her game.
Inuyasha was pulling his boots on when there was a knock on his front door, but it was expected. He’d ordered a box of Krispy Kreme’s to bring to Miroku’s regular card night, and it had arrived right on time. Salted Double Caramel Crunch. He always ordered a box, knowing the girls liked them, and having a not so secret love of them himself. Kagome was always at him to eat healthier, worried about all the salty and sugary foods he enjoyed eating, but he was half youkai – his metabolism could handle nearly anything.
Carrying the box carefully, he walked the two blocks to Miroku’s house, a tiny bit late because he’d had to wait for the delivery, but it wasn’t like anyone would care. They were already there, Miroku shuffling the cards, Sango sipping a beer, and Kagome sitting on the sofa, her eyes lighting up when he walked in the door. Sometimes she was so fucking cute, he couldn’t stand it.
He plonked the box down on the centre of the table, and walked across to Miroku’s fridge, opening the door to snag himself a beer.
Sango opened the box eagerly, and then laughed uproariously.
“Are you on a health kick Inuyasha?” she sniggered.
“Huh?”
Opening up the sides of the box, she revealed carrot, celery and cucumber sticks, along with a plastic container of hummus.
“What the fuck?!”
Kagome came to stand behind him. “Oh, good boy! You finally listened to me about eating healthier foods. You’re gonna feel so much better!” she said, patting him on the shoulder.
Inuyasha turned his head, raising an eyebrow.
“Really Kagome? Kidnapping innocent donuts?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about”, Kagome said, her expression all wide eyed and innocent. “Bu-ut if you wanted a donut as a little treat for being a good boy, after you’ve eaten some healthy veggies of course, there’s a plate of Salted Double Caramel Crunch ones in the kitchen. I know they’re your favourites.”
Kagome was tired. So tired. It had been a hectic week at work in the lead up to the fundraising ball, and all she wanted to do was curl up on the sofa with a nice cup of sleepy tea before heading off to bed. She opened the cupboard to reach in for her favourite mug, but her hand clutched on empty air.
Huffing impatiently, she stood up on tiptoe, unable to quite see onto the shelf. Sango was taller than her, and sometimes she pushed the mugs back too far in the cupboard for her to reach. But her hand still grasped at nothing. Were they all in the dishwasher?
She opened up the dishwasher, but it was empty. Sighing impatiently, she went into the hall cupboard to fetch the little step stool she used to reach the higher shelves, but it wasn’t there. Or in the bathroom.
Smelling a rat, or rather a dog, she walked slowly back into the kitchen, her eyes roving around for anything amiss. And then she noticed them. Every single mug, cup and glass was placed on top of the cupboards, way out of her reach. Kagome frowned.
This… this one hurt a little. Inuyasha knew she was sensitive about her height. At 5’2” she was the shortest person in her family, with even Souta towering over her now, and her height was a family joke.
When they first met, Inuyasha used to tease her about it all the time too, but he didn’t any more, knowing that it upset her. The only thing that had stuck was her nickname, Kittycat, which she didn’t mind so much, she kind of liked the way he said it. But…
She sighed, climbing up onto the bench top and balancing on her tippy toes, one arm stretched up to reach for a mug, the other windmilling frantically as she almost lost her balance. This game. It didn’t feel quite as much fun anymore.
Inuyasha sipped his beer silently, sitting alone in their regular booth at the pub. Miroku had tried to engage him in conversation, but had eventually given up when every answer was a surly one syllable reply, and had gone over to the pool table to join a game.
They were waiting for the girls to arrive for their regular pub trivia night, but his heart wasn’t really in it tonight. He was annoyed at Kagome. She’d called him a ‘good boy’. Offered him a treat, like a dog. In front of other people. And it rankled, especially since she was usually the one who would defend him when others poked fun at his ears or his inuyoukai heritage. Somehow it hurt ten times worse coming from her, because it was unexpected. She did call him dog boy sometimes, but that hit different, because it was a nickname, a term of endearment. Being called a ‘good boy’ felt derogatory.
Maybe it had been petty, putting all the things up out of her reach, especially when he knew she was sensitive about her height, but he’d felt like being fucking petty. This game they were playing wasn’t as much fun as it had been.
His ear twitched as he heard the raised voices of Sango and Kagome over the general noise. Sango was disagreeing with her over something, asking her if it really was a good idea, and Kagome was shushing her, moving through the crowd towards them. She seemed a little off balance somehow, like she was walking differently, leaning slightly to one side.
As soon as he got closer he saw why. Her arm was in a sling.
The mugs. The fucking mugs. He’d put them all up out of her reach and hidden her step ladder under her bed. And of course because she was the clumsiest woman on this side of the planet, she’d managed to hurt herself. And it was all his fault. Fucking shit. He was the worst person alive.
Gulping, he pushed himself out of the booth, moving over towards them. Sango was still glowering at her, probably telling her it was a bad idea to be out at a pub when she was injured. And she was right. Maybe he should take her home. He couldn’t see a cast, so maybe her arm wasn’t broken. But even if it was just sprained, that was bad enough, because he knew it was coming up to the busiest time of year for her at work.
When he got closer, Sango greeted him shortly and then moved off to find Miroku. She obviously was angry at him, because she should be. Because he was a shit friend, who’d done something to someone who he cared about very much.
“Kagome…”
“Hey Inuyasha”, she said, looking downwards, her voice dejected, her arm cradled against her side carefully in the sling. “How are you?”
Unable to stop himself, he wrapped his arms around her carefully, like she was made of glass, avoiding her injured arm. She was so tiny, so fragile. So breakable.
“Kittycat, I’m so sorry. I just didn’t think.” He stroked her hair gently, running his clawed fingers through her dark curls. “Does it hurt too much? Have you had it x-rayed? If you want, I can take tomorrow off and take you to out patients. What ever you need, okay? I’m such a shit, I can’t believe I-“
Kagome cleared her throat. “Inuyasha?”
“Do you need to sit down?”
“No, I’m fine. I’m okay, really.” He watched as she pulled her arm out of the sling, and he flinched, his own hands moving reflexively, ready to steady her. “I really am fine. I almost fell, but then I didn’t. I didn’t get hurt. This is just to… to prank…um, gotcha?” she gulped as the concerned expression on Inuyasha’s face turned to ire.
He blinked at her, stony faced, then marched out of the pub, uncaring about Kagome calling after him.
He marched down the street, anger fueling his long strides, uncaring that Kagome’s voice was getting further and further away. He could hear her running to try and keep up, and he was bitterly amused about her tiny little human legs not being long or strong enough, until he heard her misstep and almost fall. Fuck. If she really did fall, which was totally a possibility because she was the biggest klutz on both sides of the planet…
He turned and marched back towards her, then waited, his arms crossed. She ran up to him, panting, leaning over to catch her breath.
“That wasn’t fucking funny Kagome.”
“I’m sorry”, she gasped. “I should have listened to Sango. She said it was too much. I was just annoyed about you putting everything up so high. And when I almost fell it gave me the idea.” She sighed. “But you’re right, it wasn’t funny.”
“Damn right it wasn’t!” he snarled. “I thought you were injured, and you know I’d never do anything to deliberately hurt you. Between this and the ‘good dog’ comment, I’m fucking-“
“What! I’d never-“
“It was implied. I was a ‘good boy’, who could have a ‘treat’? And then I suppose when you faked an injury you thought the good dog would whine about it and look after you? What did you do, read up on Inu youkai protective instincts or something? I bet you had a good laugh about it, huh?” He huffed out a heavy breath. “I don’t like this game we're playing anymore Kagome.”
“Inuyasha, I never meant it that way. I was teasing, but I’d never…” She was openly crying now, hugging her arms around herself. “Please, I’m so sorry. Please.”
She looked so pitiful that he relented, wrapping his arm around her shaking shoulders.
“I’m still annoyed Kagome”, he sighed. “But it’ll be okay so stop crying. No more pranks, okay?”
“No more”, she sobbed, pushing her face into his side. “I promise.”
Seeing a bench close by, he tugged her hand over to sit down beside him, patting her on the shoulder as she continued to cry.
“Hey c’mon now. Stop crying. I said it would be okay.”
“I really am sorry”, she sniffled. “I guess I don’t know when to stop. Maybe that was why Mama banned me and Souta from pranking each other.”
“You used to prank your brother? Hey, me too.” He rubbed her shoulder as she leaned into him. “Not all of them were bad. Look see, I still got kittens on my phone.” Kagome smiled, her cheeks wet with tears, and pulled out her own phone.
"Look, our lock screens match", she said softly, showing him the photo of them both standing in the sunshine surrounded by purple daisies. She wiped away her tears, taking a deep breath.
“I put the Nicholas Cage trivia team photo on the fridge so Sango and I can see it all the time”, she said shyly. “It makes me laugh. Are you gonna tell me how you did it?”
“Nope, I’ll take my secrets to the grave”, he grinned, then sighed. She still smelt like guilt and sadness. “C’mon Kagome. Cheer up.”
“Inuyasha, please believe me when I say that when I said ‘good boy’ I didn’t mean it the way you thought I did”, she hiccuped, looking at him intently. “I promise. I just didn’t think. I promise I won’t call you that again. And if I ever say anything that hurts your feelings like that, please tell me.”
“Okay. And I promise I won’t hide your things up high again. That was kinda mean too.”
“Okay. Are we good now?”
“We’re good.”
Kagome reached out her arms and hugged him around the waist. “Good. Because I hate fighting with you.”
He squeezed her back affectionately, then pulled her to her feet. “You ready to go kick some trivia butt Kittycat?”
“You bet.”
"Oh, and you need to make some more raisin cookies for Myoga. The old coot hasn't stopped raving about them."

Weeks had gone by since her tryst with Florian, but Snow made no effort to discuss it. As far as she was concerned, it was a one time thing, just two people relieving stress and pent up emotions. She knew Flo was the non-committal type so his feelings couldn’t hurt all that much. And she herself was no stranger to casual sex. To Snow, forgetting it even happened was the best approach. Having a fling with her new enforcer wasn’t a smart business move and right now she needed to be very strategic with her next choices.
Klaus’s death was wrapped up in so much uncertainty and she struggled to make sense of it. Flo’s theory was that the Russians killed him for seeking a new supplier. Apparently, Klaus had scheduled some meetings with people he suspected of being in the game themselves. But that just didn’t make sense to her. The Russian syndicate had been a reliable supplier for quite some time. Consistent quality, good price. What could make Klaus do something so stupid as to go against them? She played out different scenarios in her head but none of them helped her connect the dots. What she wouldn’t give to sit with her old friend and pick his brain for a bit. He was her closest friend and she began to realize how much of a mystery he was to her.
She’d been spending a lot more time at the club in the recent weeks. Between Florian giving her an overview of the enterprise and her desire to keep an eye on the business numbers, she had very little need to be elsewhere. And thankfully things at the club were phenomenal. Klaus had done an excellent job at hiring skilled staff that could do their job and securing talented entertainment to keep the guest list filled up. She was pleased to see that they were booked for DJ's and musicians for the next 6 months. And their scout, Jonas, was searching to fill the calendar for the rest of the year. At least she didn’t have to worry about her legitimate business.
Today though, Florian was going to teach her how to look over the count. Every week, the “foot soldiers” came and dropped off their take from the product they sold. Florian and Klaus would then verify it and make sure they were consistent with what they had been given. The dealers were then told to wait for pickup details so they could get new product to sell. As Florian recounted all the steps, her mind swirled, overwhelmed with her situation.
“I’m a fucking drug dealer” she lamented, burying her face in her hands.
“Technically you’re a drug lord” Florian responded, causing her head to jerk back in surprise.
“What difference does it make? I’m still involved!”
“Yeah, but you’re anonymous. The people who buy our product won’t ever see your face. They don’t even know you exist. Du bist ein geist”
“Why is that strangely comforting?”
“Because it’s true. You’re protected. None of our people are ever going to rat on you. If you go down, this whole thing goes down and they lose the good money they make. Keeping you hidden, keeps their pockets happy”
“So why should I even be meeting with the Russians? Wouldn’t showing my face to them jeopardize all that?” A few days after their hookup, Florian received a call from Mikhail, the leader of the Russian enterprise they did business with. He told them that there was a new leader and they were all too happy to schedule a meeting. Snow wondered what their reaction would be once they came face to face with her.
“That’s different”. She stared at him expectantly, waiting for him to continue.
“So think of it this way. A dealer is a little fish. He gets picked up, the police only want to use him to find who the bigger fish is, the boss. And that’s you. Then they use you to find the even bigger fish, your suppliers”
“The Russians”
“Genau. So now it’s in both of your best interest to keep each other hidden. If he gets caught, he has nothing to really bargain with. He still cares about his rep so he won’t throw you under the bus which means you walk away untouched. But if you get caught,”
“Then I can leverage knowing who he is”
“And now you understand. You’re probably the most protected person in this scenario. So relax Schnee”
She rolled her eyes at his nickname for her. It was starting to grow on her but she’d never tell him that. And to her surprise, she felt comforted by his breakdown of things. She knew the risks of being involved and it was something that weighed on her mind as she became more hands on.
Late afternoon rolled in and it was time to prepare for her first meeting with the crew. Florian took her into Klaus office and gave her a quick walkthrough of what she needed. The money counter, Klaus’ iPad and the safe where the cash was placed. She took in the photos and assorted knick knacks he decorated the room with. A framed photo of the two of them on his desk made her feel a sharp pang of loss. In this room, his presence was heavily felt. So she made a mental note to call a decorator to renovate the space.
One by one, her crew members trickled into the large room. She recognized some faces from the club which worried her. If they did get caught, how easy would it be for police to connect them to the club or her? And even though Flo was sure they’d keep quiet, how much could she really trust them? Sensing her distress, he leaned over and whispered in her ear.
“Relax. These are all Klaus’ people. He trusted them”
She pushed past the tingling feeling that came over her as his warm breath tickled the sensitive spot beneath her ear. A smug grin came across his face.
“Focus mädchen” he playfully warned.
She steeled herself and prepared for the remaining crew members to come and introduce themselves. But it was an all too familiar face that sparked fear and then rage into her heart.
“Emmeline, what the fuck!?”
“Hey Lise”. Her sister nervously bit her lip, waiting for Snow to say more.
Her baby sister, Emmeline stood in front of her, a pink duffle bag gripped tightly in her hands. She felt absolute betrayal at the fact Klaus had approved of this without telling her.
“No. Absolutely not”
“Snow” Florian warned.
“You knew about this?!” Her head turned to him with eyes full of contempt. It was one thing that her best friend and associate kept silent on this, but Flo too? How was she supposed to trust him if he kept something this big from her?
“She’s our best dealer. She brings all the socialites to the club and Klaus thought it be good for business”
“She’s my baby sister!”
“She’s right here! Look Lise, don’t be mad. I begged Klaus to give me a shot. And besides, it’s not like I work on the streets. I just bring my rich friends to the club”
“So why are you here now?”
“Well, occasionally I supply parties. And I sometimes sell to the women at the day spas. You’d be surprised how popular coke is to those trophy wives”
Snow put her head in her hands and took deep breaths to calm herself. This whole situation was fucked up. It was bad enough that she was running the business, and now her sister was in on it too? Honestly, what the fuck was Klaus thinking?
Resigned to her fate, Snow sat up and wore a blank expression to conceal the swirl of emotions running through her.
“We’ll talk about this later” Her clipped tone let Florian and her sister know that this conversation was far from over.
When the rest of the crew showed up, they lined up against the wall across from Klaus desk. One by one, Florian called them up to turn in their take. He counted the bills by hand then with an automated machine before inputting the numbers into the iPad he had shown her. After inputting the info, he listened attentively as they gave a run through of the territory they covered. And apparently things were going well, with the exception of Alexanderplatz.
“It’s nothing, but the car keeps rolling through our territory” Luka, one of the faces she recognized earlier, had finished telling them about some suspicious activities on one of the streets he serviced.
“Cops?” Florian probed.
“Nein. They’re too obvious. Cops hide. These guys pull up across the street and make eye contact. They want us to know they’re there.”
“When did this start?” Snow inquired.
Luka paused in thought before realization came over him.
“Come to think of it, the night that Klaus was killed. Emil called to tell me some car had parked across the street. He thought it was the police so he closed up early. But then later on he said he thought the driver looked like that Dmitry guy that comes by the club sometimes”
Snow and Florian shared a knowing look. Dmitry was the younger brother of Mikhail and his business partner. The fact that he was purposely snooping on their crew was suspicious enough. Could the Russians really have been behind Klaus’ death?
“Thank you for telling us. Let us know the next time they pull up.”
“You got it Bossin”. An exciting jolt ran through her at hearing her new title. She liked it way more than Florian’s name for her.
The rest of the crew had uneventful reports to share when handing in their take. She was grateful that there weren’t more issues to worry about. But to her dismay, Emmeline’s count was the highest by far. Just her luck.
“You gotta let me know when more product comes in ASAP. I’ve got a line of clients wanting to stock up for a major party next week”
“We’ll have to discuss that before anything is decided” Snow watched as her sister narrowed her eyes in contempt. She knew this wasn’t going to be an easy battle.
“Lise, you’ve got to be shitting me. Look at my count, I’m bringing in serious profit!”
“I can see that. But I’m in charge now and I reserve the right to make changes to my crew and who I allow to represent the business. I’ll discuss it with Florian and let you know”
“You’re really going to be a bitch about this?”
Emmeline’s mouth had always been her problem. She was quick to pop off without thinking things through. Most of the time, Snow ignored her. But today, her attitude set her off and caused her once controlled anger to spike.
“Everybody out, NOW!” Snow’s voice took on a commanding tone that made everyone stand at attention. Even Florian found himself quickly rising from his seat and leaving the office. He flashed Emmeline a sympathetic glance before closing the door behind himself.
Turning to her sister, Snow tried her best to control her tone.
“Look I’m not sure what Klaus was thinking by letting you in on this. But this little arrangement stops now”
There were too many variables to consider and she was by no means comfortable with putting her sister at risk.
“God you’re impossible. You can’t ever let me have anything for myself”
“Girl cut the crap. I’m your biggest supporter and always have been. I have your back with anything you pursue but not this Em. This is way too dangerous”
“So you can be a drug lord, but I can't?” she countered.
“Grow the fuck up Emmeline. My involvement is drastically different from yours and you know it”
“Bullshit! You pretend to care about me when really you just don’t want to share the spotlight. You want all this for yourself. Can’t have your baby sister be doing just as good as you, huh?”
To her detriment, Emmeline would go out of her way to prove that she was just as good, if not better than her older sister. Yet Snow never indulged her. She’d always felt that their “rivalry” was one sided.
“Em, this is about your safety. What I’m doing is so unbelievably dangerous. I just lost my best friend. I can’t lose you too”
Her sister folded her arms across her chest and let out a frustrated sigh.
“I get it Lise, I do. But I’m an adult. I’m old enough to make my own choices and decide what’s risky. I have my own system and people I vet before doing business with them. I'm good at this Lise, let me show you. Besides, nobody here has your back like I do. I’ll be damned if I leave you to do this without people in your corner”
“I’ve got Flo. He’s been helping me the past few weeks”
“Oh I’m sure you do,” she suggested.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing. Just that Tamir told me he saw you leave the club with Flo a few weeks ago. He came back the next morning in his clothes from the night before. You wouldn’t know anything about that would you?” she teased.
“Nope. Not a thing. Let’s just get back to business” she urged as she made her way to the door. She was not having that conversation today.
“So does that mean I can stay on?” she bounced in excitement waiting for her sister’s response.
“For now. But I mean it Em. One hint of you being in danger and I pull you out”
Squealing with excitement, Emmeline rushed forward and pulled Snow in a tight hug
“Thank you Lise! I promise I’ll be safe, just watch, you’ll never have to worry about me”
“You’re my baby sister. I’m always going to worry” She held her tightly, wondering if she was making a mistake.
A knock on the door interrupted their moment as Florian stuck his head in the door frame.
“Y’all good?”
“Yes Florian, we’re good”
“Great, can we wrap up things then? We still have to set up the club for tonight”
The club was hosting a memorial event in Klaus’ honor. There were planned speeches from friends and business associates before a night of dancing and letting loose. It seemed fitting for a man who was determined to have a good time where he went.
After inputting final numbers into the iPad and securing the cash, Florian stood up behind the desk.
“I know the past few weeks have been tough with Klaus being gone. We all miss him and want to find who’s responsible for his death. I want to thank you all for keeping it together and running things smoothly. Just keep up the good work and keep an eye out for anything funny going on. We’re a family and we have each other's backs, okay?”
He turned to Snow expectantly.
“Bossin, want to add anything?”
It caught her by surprise. She hadn’t thought of preparing anything to say. She really was just there to watch and learn. But if she was going to step up and run things, now was the time to make her presence known. She stood up and pushed past the nerves that overcame her and spoke.
“Some of you may know me as the owner of the club, but I’ve always been the head of the enterprise. I simply trusted Klaus to be the mastermind that kept things going and I can see now I was right. You’re all doing very well for yourselves, the numbers don’t lie. The system he created is incredible”
The group before her hummed in agreeance.
“With Klaus gone, I’ll be taking a more active role. Florian is getting me accustomed to things but I know I’ll be very well versed in how things work. So make no mistake, I am the one calling the shots. You all answer to me. You give me respect and loyalty, I reward you. And if you cross me? Let’s just say you don’t want to find out what will happen. So let’s keep things on a positive note and keep working as a team, We’re in this together and if one of us fucks up, it puts us all at risk. Alles klar?”
Assorted affirmations echoed through the room and that familiar jolt ran through her again. Being in charge did things to her and she was half tempted to kick everyone out and fuck Flo on the desk. But she forced the idea from her mind.
That’s what I get for fucking my enforcer she thought to herself.
Florian dismissed the team after telling them to keep an eye out for the pick up details. Emmeline shot her sister a knowing look as she sauntered out the room and closed the door behind her.
The vibe in the room changed as soon as the door closed. She could feel the tension hanging heavily in the air. She watched as Flo walked over to the safe, securing the iPad with the cash counted earlier. The sight of his back muscles flexing in the white Henley tee he wore brought flashbacks of her nails digging into the taut flesh just weeks ago.
Flo turned to face her, taking in her flushed appearance and ragged breathing. A look of realization came across his face as he walked over to her.
“Don’t tell me you get off on being in charge, huh?”
He sauntered over to her, lightly tracing his lower lip with his tongue. She imagined him running it over the sensitive flesh between her thighs.
“That’s funny, I could’ve sworn you liked it when someone else took the reigns”
He kept pursuing her until she found herself pushed up against the large oak desk. Florian reached forward and gently lifted her on the desk before slowly hitching up the maxi skirt she wore. A whimper broke through her throat at the feel of his calloused hands on her thighs.
“So tell me Schnee? Who’s in charge now? Ich oder du?”
He pulled her in, hungrily claiming her mouth with an intense need for more. His hands slipped further up her skirt relishing in the feel of her warm, smooth skin. He traced the rough pads of his fingertips on her inner thighs, causing her to spread her legs wider. He took advantage of the extra room and pushed closer against her. His noticeable erection brushed against her clit through the thin lace of her panties and she moaned into his kiss, causing him to grow harder.
Snow was desperate to feel him, to have him completely consume her. Her body moved of its own accord, her hips thrusted upwards to feel him once more. Internally she was waging a mental war. Her logical mind fought to snap her out of this spell and to push him away before things escalated, but she was too far gone. His hands worked their way to the loop of her lace panties causing all doubts and reservations to scatter.
“Flo please” she mewled as his lips latched onto the sensitive flesh on her shoulder. Right now, there was only one goal on her mind; to be pinned underneath him while he had his way with her.
But the sudden knock at the door halted their plans and snapped them out of the trance. Hearts beat wildly as they gazed at one another, stunned by what almost transpired. A second knock sprung them into action and they quickly made themselves presentable. Snow smoothed out her skirt and fixed her hair while Florian made sure to to hide the impressive bulge in his pants. With one glance back at Snow, he opened the door to Emmeline standing there with a knowing grin on her face.
“Excuse me” he mumbled before taking off to the bar to prepare for the evening's events.
Emmeline stared at his retreating form with that same smirk before turning back to her sister.
“What did you need Em? Snow carefully took a seat behind desk to conceal the slight tremor in her knees. But Emmeline didn’t miss the shaky tone of her voice.
“Girl stop playing with me and tell the truth! Y’all fucking?”
Snow couldn’t help the giggles that spilled out. Her sister was not going to let this go until she knew the truth.
“Fine” she huffed, wiping the tears from her eyes.  “I’ll tell you everything but we’re going to need a lot of wine”

I have just bumped into your pool noodle for the first time and I am fascinated by it
It’s so!!! Like obviously as someone with so little canon factoids let alone characterization, Regulus/a has a lot of wiggle room to fit a story! But what little we do get leads to a lot fun contrast with this ship?
Because like...there’s some stuff where they look similar at first glance, but then the underneath is different. Both dedicated to their families, right? Trying to make their parents proud? But Regula, arguably, is that way out of fear (of being treated like her brother was (waves cheerfully at your Zuko icon)), while Percy’s coming from a healthier place...that still blew up spectacularly.
Then we get superficially different, potentially similar: canonically Reg joins Voldemort with parental approval, then turns on him. Percy joins the Ministry...and when his parents tell him to turn on the Ministry he tells them to piss off. But interestingly, Percy’s parents told him to reject the Ministry based solely on the word of...one single powerful old charismatic wizard who was raising a personal army. Hm, that sure would sound familiar to Reg, wouldn’t it?
SUPER not sure yet how that all changes with the timing on this (they go through Prisoner of Azkaban as fiancés, getting their NEWTs* before marriage) and the fact that Reg is 100% sure Sirius is innocent, so like...uh...how the fuck do things blow up if Percy still gets the job as Crouch’s assistant? The man who convicted Reg’s brother without a trial??? Reg only SEEMS like she has chill because she was raised to be a Polite Young Lady but this is still the person who left Voldemort a Fuck You note so I imagine Reg meeting Crouch is NOT PRETTY.
~
Meanwhile, Reg & Percy’s different upbringings and eras they came of age in exacerbate the Displaced In Time dynamic.
The wizarding world in generally is pretty old-timey compared to ours, and the Ancient & Most Noble House of Black sure was very old-timey. Whereas the Weasleys are very progressive! They’re also working class, which I get the impression helps with the progressiveness. Wealthy Purebloods can ignore the world changing if they want, the family of the man who heads the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts department can’t.
Then there’s how the idea of arranged marriages would’ve been presented to them. Granny Relly is the one who came up with the idea, Arthur and Molly accepted it but are VERY CLEAR to all the kids that this is an OPTION, not an OBLIGATION. Percy even saw Bill & Charlie reject the idea, with zero consequences! He knows he can Nope out and have his family’s love and support still.
Regula has known she’d likely have to marry someone her parents picked her whole life. That Granny Relly up there? That’s Cedrella Black who was held up to Reg her whole childhood as Who Not To Be because she run off and married for love. Reg wakes up from her magical coma, gets told by Grandmama Mel that she’s got a fiancé now and just accepts it. Maybe if Percy was a Voldemort supporter, Reg would have objections! But he’s not.
(Arthur is genuinely horrified by how non-questioningly accepting Regula is of the engagement.)
And then less then two decades difference means they grew up in completely different eras:
Percy was five when the war ended. It affected him, I firmly think “sometimes Mum or Dad will tell you to do something Right Now that you don’t understand, and if you disobey you or your siblings could get hurt” is why he’s so attached to jumping when an authority says jump. But he grew up in peacetime. The war was over, the victors decided, problems lingered but no one’s being told to pick sides. His worries are normal peacetime worries.
Reg grew up in the war, and was recruited into it before graduation. All her classmates knew they’d have to pick sides, debated it with each other. Were hearing about disappearances, deaths, possibly from within their own families. I’m going with the idea that Reg set off to destroy the locket in October of her 7th year, after having joined the Death Eaters months or even years before that, dragged in by her cousins during school holidays. She’s been in skirmishes, not known who to trust, and came to the conviction that stopping Voldemort was worth dying for.
It honestly feels more like Reg is from a hundred years ago than just fourteen.
~
Percy: I need to support my fiancée as she adjusts to the changed world. I will tell her about Quidditch matches she missed and ask the professors about changes in the curriculum, we can study for NEWTs together :) :) :)
Reg: so while I was unconscious everyone found out that I was a Death Eater and that I betrayed Voldemort. I need to make allies ASAP to keep from being shanked by either side, including my own extended family. Yes, do tell me all about cauldron bottoms and Muggle factoids.
Also Reg: WHAT DO YOU MEAN I MISSED GWENOG JONES PLAYING FOR WALES AGAINST NORWAY IN THE QUIDDITCH WORLD CUP.
Percy, sincerely: I know, this is the definitely most tragic thing about your coma, you have my sympathies and condolences.
~
*Sirius as Padfoot sneaking around campus, seeing a 7th year Slytherin that’s a dead ringer for his dead sister: THE FUCK. Sirius thinking about it: No probably just a...a weirdly similar cousin. Sirius hearing someone call her Regula: WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK.

the lost song : yoonmin
Tumblr media
Getting ready to start fresh in life, physical education professor Park Jimin is just waiting to migrate to Australia with his daughter and girlfriend. Everything gets topsy-turvy when world-class music producer Min Yoongi—and also his secret ex-boyfriend—comes back home to South Korea to marry his it-girl fiancé. If that wasn’t bad enough for Jimin, Yoongi invites him to the wedding. It gets worse; it leaves him no choice but accept it to avoid spilling the beans.
Although the worst happened back then, it’s not enough for their forsaken what-ifs and unsaid feelings from making itself clear. The situation makes Jimin realize how jaded he was without Yoongi all the years they were apart—and vice versa. As they slowly pick up the broken pieces of the past, reality hits hard back at them again. There are two choices: to give up on love and live in the present or to run away and never look back.

Yoongi, 20
I hurriedly go down the stairs while vigorously drying my head with a towel. I knew I would oversleep. Aside from being a deep sleeper, I’m also not used to waking up as early as 7 a.m. Nine is still pretty early if you’d ask me. The cool air last night made everything even worse. I shouldn’t have opened the windows.
Good thing my grandma heard Aunt Hyeja yelling outside our house. If she didn’t, I wouldn’t have even noticed that her and our other neighbors’ missed calls and text messages.
“Make sure none of the kids get injured, okay? We don’t have money for their hospital bills if ever,” reminds grandma as she followed me down. I don’t hear and comprehend what she said until five seconds later.
“Got it. Bye.” When I get out of our gate, I immediately see Aunt Hyeja who was waiting for me outside.
“We’ll get going, Auntie Dooshim!” exclaims Aunt Hyeja.
“Alright, have a safe trip!”
“I’m so sorry, Auntie. I really am.” She walks so briskly that I have a hard time catching up with her. Regardless, I feel like that’s how should it be; I must walk maybe two or three steps behind her after what I’ve done.
“Don’t think about it anymore. The kids are already in there. You know our numbers so contact us immediately if anything goes wrong. There’s a ton of food on the table so feed yourselves when you get hungry. Don’t leave at least one of them unattended. Never attend to the gate if it’s a stranger and refrain from telling them that an adult is not present—oh, how old are you again?”
“Twenty.”
“My bad. It slipped my mind that you’re already an adult. Anyway, did you understand everything clearly?” I just nod. Aunt Hyeja doesn’t seem to be mad but it’s fairly obvious that she’s already dying to leave. I discreetly peek at her watch which says 7:15 a.m. I can’t help but shake my head. I reminded myself endless times to do well in this babysitting gig but I still ended up ruining the first thing about it. There must be something really wrong with me.
After arriving in front of the home of my best friends, brothers Seokjin and Taehyung, she tells me, “Also, your Aunt Misun told me that Jimin won’t be able to attend the excursion because he’s sick. He’s going to be home alone today so I told him that he can contact you if he needs anything.”
I gulped as soon as I heard Jimin’s name and forced myself to act nonchalant. “W-what happened to him?” It was definitely hard to do so.
“He has fever,” she replied. “Don’t you guys get more written projects in lieu of not attending out-of-the-classroom activities?”
“Yes.”
“So, does it mean you like completing paperworks instead of attending trips and such?” I just let out a fake chuckle and nodded. I’m sure it wouldn’t sit with her when I say that I don’t like socializing and going to places with a lot of people. Aunt Hyeja is a social butterfly and—I don’t want to sound like I’m judging her (but maybe I am)—she’s not exactly the type of person to bother understand things deeper if it doesn’t concern her. Besides, it’s lengthy and we’re not that close for me to open up to her. An awkward giggle is probably better than an explanation.
The Kims already left when I entered and all the four kids were sleeping on the sofa in the living room, not even noticing my entrance. I decide to just sit on the floor and watch TV in low volume. My body is asking for me to sleep so badly that pinching myself isn’t working anymore. A faint regret is starting to form in my chest but I cut it out immediately.
After getting bored of the morning makjang drama that I forced myself to watch, I turn around to check on them. Jingoo—a cousin of Seokjin and Taehyung, as well as Namjoon who is also a cousin of the two—is already up but still lying on his stomach while silently watching the drama with me. Our eyes meet but he doesn’t say a word and just shifts his eyes back at the screen.
“Have you eaten breakfast yet?” I ask. Jingoo just nods. “What did you eat?”
“Seaweed rice balls and jeon.”
“Tell me when you’re hungry.” He just nods once again.
Our conversation awakens Taejoon, Chanbin and Yeongyu. Unlike Jingoo, they wanted to eat so I prepared the food that was left for us. Being alone with these kids who I barely know suddenly makes me feel weird for some reason. It’s probably because I don’t have any experience in babysitting. So far, it’s an alright deal. The money is good and you practically get paid to stay at home.
I leave them and go back to the living room, sitting beside Jingoo’s feet who hasn’t moved an inch ever since he woke up. “Where did they go?” He asks, not moving his eyes from the screen.
“A trip.”
“Event aunt and uncle? I thought it was a school trip.”
I let out a sigh and close my eyes. Some sort of hot energy constantly forms in my head the longer I talk to this kid.  “I don’t know why. Ask them when they come back later.”
It got rowdy when they started to play. This is way worse than I imagined. Toy cars and guns are all over the place and I need to remind them every two to three minutes that they shouldn’t be shooting bullets on the TV screen, as well as the vases and figurines. None of my words seem to get to their tiny heads.
I take back what I said. I don’t want to this ever again. I wasn’t like this when I was a kid. Even my friends. We weren’t anything like this. Not even close. We were well-liked by the neighborhood in general because of that.
Out of the blue, my phone suddenly vibrated. My heart almost dropped on the floor when I read Jimin’s name on the screen.
[JIMIN :)
1 NEW MESSAGE]
All of a sudden, my heart started to pound like it wanted to get out of my chest. I took a deep breath before flipping my phone and pressing View.
[JIMIN :)
Hey, can I go there? It’s getting a little boring here.]
[ME (draft)
Of course! Bring what you need!]
I delete it before I could even think twice. I cringed at what I just typed.
[ME (draft)
Okay, but it’s a little loud here]
Maybe not. He might end up not going if I say that.
[ME
Sure]
[JIMIN :)
I’ll bring ramen]
[ME (draft)
Okay]
I press the end call button and just fold my phone instead. I immediately go to the bathroom and wash my face with soap and water. I run my wet hands through my hair as well. Just as I got out, someone knocked on the door.
“Don’t shoot on anything!” I yell before walking out the door.
“Hey,” greets Jimin as soon as I open the gate. Unlike his usual self, the gloomy aura surrounding him can be clearly felt. His face and shoulders seem wretched as well.
“Are you alright? You look so pale.”
“Trying to be.”
“Stay in Seokjin’s or Taehyung’s room if you want to get some rest. It’s a little rowdy in the living room.”
“Thanks. I’ll go text him.”
As soon as I hear Seokjin’s bedroom door close, I make an announcement to the kids. “Jimin’s sick. Don’t make any loud noises from now on.” It did subside but only for a short while. “You kids, anyone who makes loud noises will not get to eat lunch.” They stop playing tok look at me with a weird expression on their faces, as if they’ve never heard someone say such a thing to them before. A hint of fear can also be seen. I fucked up again, didn’t I?
Unlike what I said, I started to prepare lunch when the clock hit noon. The kids gathered at the table and chowed down as soon as the food was ready. Meanwhile, I got my own food and ate in the living room.
[ME (draft)
Hey, lunch is ready. Can you go down here?]
[ME
Lunch is ready, feel free to eat here.]
[JIMIN :)
What’s for lunch?]
[ME
Pork belly, barbecue, dumplings, rice and kimchi]
[JIMIN :)
Damn, will go there ASAP]
I wipe the droplets of sweat on my forehead. My breath keeps on running as if they are trying to get away from something… or someone. I don’t know. I don’t even want to think about this. It only makes me go crazier and crazier. Even my well-trained emotional suppression skills are barely working. Helpless, hopeless—that’s what I am.
“Hey!”
“Shit!” I hold to my chest in shock and turn around. “I-it’s you.”
“Yes, it’s me. You okay? You’re deep in your thoughts that you didn’t even notice me pass in front of you,” asks Jimin.
I shake my head. “I just zoned out.”
“Shit!” Taejoon mimicks while the other three laugh.
“Shit!” Chanbin and Yeongyu repeat in unison which makes them laugh even harder.
“Are you kids an adult to say that?” I ask.
“Shit!” The three exclaim, not even bothering to answer me.
Suddenly, I hear Jimin giggle softly—making me look back at him. “So, you can already laugh. Feeling better now?”
He just nods with a faint smile and takes a spoonful of kimchi stew. “Mmm, delicious. Did you cook?”
“Nope, one their parents probably.”
Neither of us talked after that; I just pretended the focus on my food while his eyes wandered around the place. Even though it feels like I need to say something, not a single word’s coming to my mind. My mouth is left agape from the urge to speak but not knowing what to say. For some reason, it seems to me that he’s feeling the same way. But how can I know for sure?
The kids come back to the living room not long after they have finished eating. I couldn’t thank the heavens enough; this is the only time today that I’ve actually become happy about their presence. Before they can even settle on their seats, I stand up to play the first Disney DVD my hand landed on: The Incredibles.
Jimin passes behind me so I look at him. He’s bringing my dirty plate with him to the kitchen. “Hey, s-sorry. You didn’t have to.”
He looks back and says, “Huh?”
“The plate.”
“Psh. It’s nothing.”
I follow him to the sink where he’s silently washing the dishes. He almost looks like he’s zoned out and submerged in his deep thoughts.
“Hey!” I jokingly yell from his back.
“Sh—!” He accidentally loses his grip on the plate he’s holding. It falls back to the sink, causing a small chip on the edge. “Oh, no…”
“I’m so sorry,” I say as I try to catch my breath. The plate looks expensive with all those blue Chinese prints. It most definitely came from an expensive dinnerware collection and Mrs. Kim would kill me if she sees this. I might have to babysit for nine or ten more times just to pay for the damage.
“Don’t worry about it. It was an accident.”
“But it looks expensive!”
“I was the one who lost grip on it, what are you being so worried about?” Jimin says with a faint giggle. I’m not buying it; he doesn’t sound amused at all. “Also, wanna watch?” He nonchalantly asks.
“This?” I ask back, pointing at the TV.
He just shakes his head. “Seokjin has a big collection up there.” I just looked blankly at him, deliberately making it obvious that I need more details to get what he’s saying. “Sola Aoi, Asami Yuma, Haruna Hana and so much more. We have everything we need up there!” I feel my whole body suddenly heat up upon hearing what he just said and my legs seem like they want to give up on me. “Hey, you okay?”
“Th-the kids…”
He takes a peek at them. “They’re already asleep.”
I look back at the kids and close my eyes in panic. Images of him being half-naked while beating off instantly flash in my mind. I vigorously shake my head along those thoughts. I can’t count how many times I saw him naked in the past. We even used to take a bath together along with the other guys when were younger. But this time everything’s different, especially to me, and it sucks big time. “Okay, then…”
He opens the dish dryer and puts all the now-squeaky clean plates, glasses, spoons and forks. “Don’t be so nervous. They’ll probably stay asleep until twilight or something.”
“Maybe,” I replied to him even if his words just seemed to bounce against my head. Naked. Naked. Naked. My mind just doesn’t seem to get tired about this goddamn word and keeps asking for more. Now, even the way he looks and smiles at me is starting to mean something else.
Jimin grabs my arm and pulls me until we reach Seokjin’s room. Before I could even react, the door was already locked and his pants and underwear were on the floor. My manhood starts to throb and harden as soon as my eyes lands on his half-naked body. He’s grown much bigger and thicker ever since I last saw him. That was a few years ago—same situation as now but with Hoseok and Taehyung, minus the feelings. To stop myself from completely breaking down out of panic and ruining everything for good, including our friendship, I just turn my head at a random teddy bear on Seokjin’s bed.
I sit beside him on the carpet and before also taking off my short pants and underwear. A strange kind of electricity seemed to charge on my body when I saw him look at my manhood. His mouth slightly gaped but he immediately closed it and focused on operating the DVD player. Since the tapes weren’t labeled, we don’t know what those contained. Jimin chooses just whatever. The video begins, and we see Sola Aoi who was wearing a provocative nurse uniform enter the hospital room where the middle-aged male patient was in.
I lean on the bed to relax and force myself to focus on the film. Jimin’s already starting to touch himself. He looks back at me with an unexplainable expression in his eyes. It’s been a while since I did this with them but I’m sure we didn’t look at each other while beating off, or maybe I’m just forcing weird meanings. At this point, I can’t even trust myself anymore.
I couldn’t help but start to actually beat off as soon as Sola started to moan. All of us in our group likes her the most for how irresistible she sounds when she’s getting fucked. It makes the film feel like 5D.
The film already ended but neither of us reached climax yet. When I was almost there, I stopped. I don’t know why but I felt like I needed to do so. As I try to catch my breath, I watch him while he did his business.
To my surprise, Jimin also stops and joins me in leaning on the bed, panting hard. He looked at me straight in the eyes, then his gaze dropped on my lips. “They look dry…”
Before I even knew it, our lips were all over each other and his tongue has successfully penetrated my mouth. Jimin’s hands start to explore inside my shirt before pulling it off of me. He removes his own next. My hands are frozen on his groin in disbelief. Everything seems like a dream but all of these are a hundred percent real.
“Jimin…” I mindlessly say.
“Do whatever you want to do to me.” He grabs my hand and places it on top of his manhood. “Don’t hold back.”
I pull his head and kiss him hard before pushing him down. Only God and I know how much he looks good with nothing on but his golden rolo chain necklace. “As long as you let me, I won’t.”

Chapter Summary: Sonny struggles with the secret he learned, unsure of who to tell or IF he should tell anyone. Meanwhile, Rafael feels that Montserrat's faith in him has been misplaced because of how Wilkes' trial is going.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amanda walked into the precinct's lounge room for a soda but instead found Sonny pacing back and forth right in front of the soda machines. "Carisi, what are you doing?" she made a motion for him to get out of her way.
Sonny looked at the soda machines and shook his head. He just moved his pacing to the other side of the room. As Amanda put in her dollar bills for a soda, she glanced over her shoulder and saw the detective still doing the same pacing.
"Seriously, what are you doing?"
Sonny felt like a teenager the way he was pacing, but he was just so confused. He felt like he needed to do something but he wasn't sure what. And the problem was...he couldn't really talk about it with anyone.
"Carisi?" Amanda's voice drew him back to the present. She was standing in front of the soda machine, holding her sweet lime shasta can in one hand. When Sonny met her gaze, she raised an eyebrow and indicated she wanted an answer.
Maybe she's the only one, Sonny thought. He glanced at the window and saw Fin and Nick working dutifully at their desks. Montserrat wasn't in since she was following the trial against Wilkes from the front seats.
"I may have a problem," he began but realized it wasn't really truthful. "I mean-" he shook his head, "-I think someone has a problem but they don't know it yet…"
Both of Amanda's eyebrows raised this time. "What?"
Sonny hated he couldn't explain it the way he wanted to. Maybe he just needed to stop pacing and take things slowly. "Okay," he released a heavy breath and turned to face Amanda again. "So...I…" Nope, that was the wrong beginning too.
By this point, Amanda was getting concerned. She rarely saw Sonny this upset and it was usually over cases but this one didn't look like it would be the same. "Hey," she moved forwards and rested a hand on his arm. "Do you need help?"
"I don't, but at the same time maybe…" Sonny admitted. He leaned his body forwards and gripped the back of a chair. "A couple days ago I discovered that...someone had...someone has feelings for my friend."
"We're not talking about Kara, right?" Amanda had to ask before she thought of anything else.
"No, no, I really do mean a friend," Sonny was quick to clarify. "And she's a really close friend of mine and I look out for her. She doesn't realize this person has feelings for her."
"Okay, so...what? You're trying to play cupid or something?" the smile on Amanda's face was quickly erased when Sonny exclaimed a 'hell no!' in her face. The blonde blinked in surprise. "I'm so confused…"
Sonny sighed and moved around the snack table. "The problem is that there's a third person involved, only he doesn't know it cos I haven't told him."
"How's he involved?"
"He also likes my friend. And I'm pretty sure that she likes him too. But that person I'm telling you about? He's going to get in the way and the worst part is…" Sonny sighed again, "It's unrequited because I know my friend only sees him like a brother and if she were to find out...it would ruin her relationship with him."
Amanda's head bobbed as she tried to comprehend everything she learned. "This is starting to feel like high school. Why on earth are you so troubled by this? What's it to you if that person's feelings come to light?"
"Because…" Sonny so badly wanted to tell her that this person was his girlfriend's brother and would therefore put Kara into a terrible position between her brother's happiness or her best friend's happiness. "Because I know my friend won't want to hurt that person...and who knows what she might do to keep him happy."
"What - you think she's going to sleep with him or something just for his happiness?" Amanda made a face. "That'd make her a pushover. Your friend just has to be brave enough to tell that guy to back off cos she's already got eyes somewhere else."
"I just wish I could help this trio because...I like them all. They're my friends." And Sonny knew how devastated Kara would be if all this came to light. Damien having feelings for Montserrat while she had feelings for Rafael who also had feelings for her? Just thinking about it made Sonny's head hurt. And the dread that filled him was inevitable.
"Maybe you should talk to your friend, then," Amanda suggested after realizing how big of a burden this was becoming for Sonny. "These people are adults - or…" she trailed off when a new idea crossed her mind.
Sonny looked up from the table to see her thoughtful glance. "What?"
"I'm all for being an adult but…" a small smirk came to Amanda's face, "That second guy you talked about - the one your friend likes back - might get a little riled up if he found out this other guy likes her too. Might be the push he needs to man up and get the girl."
Sonny laughed lightly. Boy he would pay to see Amanda tell that to Rafael's face. All in all, Amanda did have a point...Sonny just wasn't sure if that's the road he wanted to take. With everything that's going on, wouldn't it add more fuel to the disputes Montserrat and Rafael already had between each other?
~ 0 ~
The trial against Wilkes was not going so well and it was due to the fact there was no physical evidence to back Wilkes' terrible interests. Rafael was fuming because once again SVU put him on this track.
"Where the hell is my evidence?" he demanded from the trio that'd gone to trial with him once they were back in his office. "You said-" he pointed a finger at Montserrat first, "-you'd get it. And do I have it?" Montserrat opened her mouth, but he beat her to it. "No." She shot him a glare but he had moved onto Murphy by then. "This was your idea even after I told you we couldn't convict a man just for thinking things."
"But you know that what he's thinking can and will become real sooner or later," Olivia spoke up before got a chance to go at her as well.
"Do I?" Rafael sarcastically said, tilting his head at her.
"Okay, stop being unnecessarily rude," Montserrat frowned. She folded her arms over her chest and upheld his glare with her own, like she usually did. "We're working on it, alright? And Olivia's right. You know damn well that sooner or later, Wilkes will act…"
"If he hasn't already that we don't know about," Murphy added. Montserrat pointed at him indicating her agreement.
"And it's not like we didn't get you something," Montserrat wanted to remind Rafael that they did get one important thing for him.
Olivia had gone above and beyond the call of duty and gotten an old friend to come and evaluate Wilkes. "Wong made a good evaluation," Olivia pointed out. "He warned us that this could escalate more than what it already has."
"Great," Rafael's sarcasm still made an appearance. "That's all I got. An evaluation. More thinking."
"Don't act like you don't agree with us," Montserrat said. "You're just as disturbed as we all are with this guy. He's different than what we've dealt with before, but he's going to end up doing the same thing all the other perps we've caught have done. And you know it."
The silent stare-down between them was indication enough that Montserrat was right. Yes, he did agree this was a case that needed to be brought to trial. It, however, didn't mean it would be an easy win considering there was no victim so far. And the fact he may be losing and letting a man like that walk free...amongst children...sickened him. "Get me something," Rafael's time had changed from commanding to a plead. "We can't let him go free."
Now there, Montserrat happily obliged. "Of course." And as if the world was trying to prove that they were doing the right thing, Montserrat's cellphone started buzzing in her pocket. "Look at that," she happily looked up, "Nick says they found the ex-wife and she's willing to talk to us."
"Go," Murphy ordered her. "And let us know what she says ASAP."
Montserrat nodded and headed out of the office. She accompanied Sonny to visit Wilkes' ex-wife and really hoped this would finally be their big break.
"You good?" Montserrat asked Sonny once they'd gotten out of their car. She noticed how quiet he'd been during their drive, and yet for some reason he kept glancing at her with a look on his face.
"Yeah," Sonny did his best to shrug casually. He started the way for the ex-wife's front yard.
"You're just unnaturally quiet and it's kind of freaking me out," Montserrat trailed behind him. She looked more like a child than anything following his taller figure. "I mean, am I supposed to expect an angry Kara at home tonight and you can't figure out a way to tell me what you did?"
Sonny chuckled and stopped, making her bump into his back. He turned around and looked down at her. "I didn't do anything."
"K, so that's your story then…"
Sonny rolled his eyes at her and continued to walk for the front porch. "I didn't do anything. Kara and I are fine. I just have some things on my mind."
"Oh…" Montserrat blinked but followed after him again. "You wanna tell me what it's about later?"
"Nah, I'm good. Thanks," Sonny pressed the doorbell to avoid this conversation from going any further.
Linda Walker was not pleased to find the two detectives on her front step. It was a struggle to get her to let them in, but once they started telling her about the reasons they were here...she seemed more inclined to speak with them.
"I don't know how you found me," Linda led them into her living room. "I changed my name, got off the internet. I don't think Simon even knows where I moved after I remarried."
"Sounds like you needed a clean break," Sonny remarked and shared a knowing look with Montserrat. This woman definitely knew something about Wilkes.
"When we met, I found Simon magnetic. But he has a darkness inside of him…"
"So you definitely knew about his fantasies," Montserrat confirmed their thoughts.
Linda gave a small nod of her head. "Not the extent of them, not at first, but then I started to notice how he would shut the laptop whenever I came into the room. One time, he left it open."
"And what did you see, Ms. Walker?" asked Sonny, though judging by the woman's face he knew it was terrible.
"He was messaging with these other people, talking about Bobby and me, about things he'd let them do to us. Our child was six." Linda's voice cracked just at the memory. "He said it was just a game, but he knew, he knew he had to go. I told Bobby, "daddy has a sickness. He can't be around other people.' I made a deal with Simon. As long as he promised to never see Bobby again or be around other children, I would keep quiet. This room of his... It's across from a grade school?"
Montserrat glanced at Sonny, both agreeing on their next move. "Ms. Walker, we're going to need you to come back with us. And your son."
~0~
The plan was simple, but effective. Bring in Wilkes' ex-wife and son to court, push him into revealing his true self. And it worked like a charm.
As soon as Wilkes saw Linda and their son, Bobby, he became an entirely different person on the stand. He was shifty, nervous….
This, Rafael could work so well with. "You testified earlier that your fantasies have nothing to do with real life. Correct?"
Wilkes nodded his head fervently, but even that indicated he was trying to convince himself now. "There's no crossover."
"Mm-hmm. So let me ask you this again, Mr. Wilkes, and remember, you are under oath. Why have you not been in contact with your ex-wife or your son?"
Wilkes' Haze kept flickering to Linda and his son. All the memories of him forcing himself to leave, to be away from them, started rushing back. "Because I knew I couldn't be around them…"
"Why is that?"
"...because of the pictures in my head."
"Which you can't control?" Rafael's question elicited a sharp objection from Wilkes' lawyer. He rolled his eyes and simply reworded what he wanted to say. It didn't matter how he said it, Wilkes would still be giving himself up. "Isn't it true that your first wife asked you to leave when you admitted that you were afraid you would act on your urges?"
It didn't matter if Wilkes' lawyer cried 'objection' because of what Wilkes had to say as an answer.
"I made...I made the decision to leave. I didn't want to hurt him. He's my son. I didn't hurt him. I would never!"
~0~
"Thank you for coming," Olivia said to Linda and Bobby outside of the courtroom. Linda just nodded, but it was clear as day that she wanted to get the hell away from there.
"C'mon, we'll take you home," Montserrat gestured the way towards the elevator. She and Sonny would be driving them back home while the jury was out.
"What do you think is going to happen now?" Amanda stopped beside Olivia once they were alone. The jury was out and now all they had to do was wait...and wait...
"I wish I knew," Olivia admitted. She glanced behind and saw Rafael coming out of the courtroom with Efron. Both looked ready to kill each other since both sides made pretty good arguments.
"Nice move sneaking his ex-wife and son into the courtroom to rattle him," Efron couldn't help her sour remark. "Even for you, that was a low blow."
All Rafael did was smirk for a moment. "You ever ask yourself why it rattled him so much?" he turned to face Efron, forcing her to stop walking. "What the hell kind of thoughts does he have in his head about his own son?" It seemed like his question rattled Efron enough, but as a professional she had to reject it.
"You really want to live in a world where you can be put in prison for what's inside your head?" she countered with, admittedly a good argument yet again.
~ 0 ~
One hour. One measly hour.
That's all it took for the jury to give a 'not guilty' verdict.
"I wouldn't take it personally," Olivia gave a light pat on Rafael's arm. "You put up a good fight."
"Hm, wasn't good enough apparently." Rafael looked down the hall where Wilkes was coming out of the courthouse to a swarm of paparazzi.
"We gave it our best shot." Even Murphy had to admit that they did everything they could to put Wilkes away, but sometimes things didn't work out the way they wanted them to.
"Right, and that's it, huh?" Nick was glaring daggers at Wilkes. "We just wait for Simon to do something? He's not gonna stop."
"You can't let it get in your head, Nick," Amanda warned him. "Cos once you do…it's hard to stop it." Nick didn't say anything, but he continued to glare at Wilkes' figure.
"She's right, don't do it man," Fin said, but Nick was too lost already. He turned to leave without saying a word to anyone else.
"Hey!" they heard Montserrat's voice not a second later. She was hurrying up the staircase with Sonny trailing behind her. "Tell me we got him!"
At her hopefulness, Rafael looked over to Olivia. He couldn't be the one to ruin it, even though it was his fault Wilkes would walk away.
Olivia seemed to get the message. She gave a shake of her head and, like Rafael imagined, Montserrat's hope vanished in two seconds.
"Oh…" her dark eyes blinked several times while she processed what Wilkes' freedom meant. "I thought…I-I really thought we would get him. I mean, I know what I said before but...I just thought…"
"I thought so too," Olivia sighed. "We all did."
"Sorry," Rafael felt compelled to say and actually startled some of the others with it. He never apologized.
"It's not your fault," Montserrat quickly said, as if she'd known what the apology was for her. "It's those twelve idiots on the jury stand. I can't believe they did that."
"It happens," Sonny sighed. "Listen, why don't we just go home? I think everyone's just tired. We worked this case over like there was no tomorrow…"
Murphy began to nod in agreement. "Fine job, detectives," he offered them a small smile. "Carisi's right. Go home. Rest. Tomorrow, we're back at it again."
The group started to disperse as they came down the rest of the steps onto the sidewalk. Montserrat only stopped because her phone started buzzing. "Go on," she told the others. "It's Casey. I might be drowning myself with brownies for the rest of the night."
"As long as it's not barbecue because you know that oder sticks to you, right?" Rafael smirked at her.
"I'll be sure to leave a plate just for you in your office," she said and took her call. "Casey?"
With that bit, Rafael knew they'd be fine by tomorrow. He started to walk again but heard Montserrat's response to whatever Casey said and...it sounded unusually high-pitched. He stopped walking and looked back to see her incredibly pale.
"Wh-what are you - Casey, what the hell do you mean?" she honestly looked ready to pass out.
Rafael checked to see where the others were and while they weren't too far away, bringing them all back might not be exactly what Montserrat needed. He himself debated whether or not to inch back to her.
"No, I don't understand!" Montserrat fervently shook her head. She brought one hand to her ginger curls, almost looking like she was gripping the strands. "When did - okay fine, I'll be there! D-don't move!" She hung up but it didn't look like she would be getting better anytime soon.
"Montserrat?" Rafael finally decided to come back to her and in just in time, it appeared, because she stumbled back as if she were going to fall. He quickly reached for her arm and pulled her forward, but this time not even their closeness would pull Montserrat out of her crisis. "What's wrong?" he asked her at least two times before she finally answered.
"...my brother just got arrested."

There’s a god in your shower.
No big deal. Just another normal day in the life of me.
What in god’s name possessed you to agree to this, you have no clue, but he’s been in there for almost an hour now and you’re just listening to your water bill shoot through the roof.
No. big. deal.
You’re about to go bang on the door and yell at him to finish up before he drains the ocean when the door swings open and he stomps past you.
Glowing.
You lower your fist and clear your throat, intent on ignoring yet another eyeful of bare godly torso.
“Took you long enough.”
“It’s been nearly a month,” he scowls, shooting you a glare. “I have a lot of hair to wash.”
“Cool.” You nod and awkwardly sit on the side of your bed, trying not to watch him finish drying himself off. “I got you some clean clothes. Just some sweats and a t-shirt, nothing fancy. Sorry.”
He casts you a sideways glance, tightening the towel around his waist. “Thank you.”
After nearly three hours of hiding in your office eating, Loki had gathered the courage—and the blatant shame—to reluctantly request to take a shower. You’d told him you wouldn’t stop him from using the communal showers in the tower, to which he had just raised an eyebrow at you in clear annoyance.
“Oh. Right, only Laing, not you,” you remembered. “You, um, can use mine.”
A slightly awkward car ride and a quick stop in the men’s section of the nearest department store brought you to now, holding out the grey sweats and t-shirt to the freshly washed god—the glowing god, you realise again when you get another good glance at that ridiculously well-defined torso.
He takes them without another word, stepping back with one hand holding the towel around his waist, staring at you in silence.
“Well?”
You blink. “Well what?”
“Shall I dance for you as I drop the towel? Or are you planning on turning around?”
So maybe the staring is obvious. But he’s...glowing.
“Yeah, yeah,” you mumble, hurriedly swivelling around on the bed to turn your back on him. “Sorry.”
“Thank you.”
You hear him rustle around for a bit, wishing he could’ve just stayed in the bathroom to change, considering this is now twice that you’ve seen way more of him than a “workplace associate” should ever get to—have to.
I meant have to.
Your heart beats a tiny, tiny bit faster.
You panic.
“So you’re glowing,” you blurt, burying your face in your hands just in case he rounds the bed and gets a look at you.
He doesn’t need to start thinking he holds any power over you.
“No,” Loki quickly replies from behind you. “I’m not.”
“You totally were. I saw you, your whole torso was glowing.”
“Staring, were we?”
You grab a pillow and lob it somewhere over your head, hoping and praying that it hits him—the soft thunk and hissed “I’ll kill you” seem to say that it did.
“People don’t glow,” you huff into your hands, waiting for the go-ahead to look. “Is that just your natural glow? You wear like, permanent all-body highlighter?”
“I’m not glowing,” he says again, voice slightly muffled—must be putting the shirt on.
The dumb side of your brain heaves a sad, disappointed sigh at that fact, and you want to slap yourself.
Slow footsteps drag over to come to a stop in front of you, and you peek through your fingertips to find a thankfully clothed god standing before you—still glowing.
“Just look.”
You push him by the shoulders over to the mirror on your dresser, flinging a hand towards his reflection as he stares.
The gold shimmer to his pale skin is unmistakable.
“Glowing. I told you.”
“I don’t see it,” he smoothly replies.
His hand twitches against his thigh as he turns away from the mirror, and in the blink of an eye, the entire golden hue surrounding his figure is gone.
“You just made it go away.” You blink a couple times, taking a shocked step away from him. “It was there. I saw it, and you did something with your hand.”
“You’re delusional.” Loki gives you a thin smile.
“Do it again.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“Do—do it again,” you repeat, waving your hand at him as you look him up and down. “Show me again.”
There’s a strange lift to your voice, something he’s certain he’s never heard before, not from you, not from anyone on Asgard, not from anyone between the two.
Perhaps from his mother, perhaps centuries ago when he couldn’t quite reach the window sill she’d claimed as her’s and his, back when he’d managed to produce nothing more than a painful spark in the palm of his hand.
“Do that again.”
You’re...interested.
A lump catches in his throat.
“No. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
To appease you would be too indulgent. It’d be stupid, a mindless thrill for a few seconds that’d only begin another downward spiral of yearning.
Impressing a mortal isn’t exactly a feat to consider an accomplishment.
The spell was a stupid idea, he decides, it was too obvious, too drastic. The intensity of the concealment might be necessary, but he’ll have to make extra efforts if he wants to keep up the façade without those, uh...glittery side effects.
“Okay,” you slowly say with a frown, “never mind. Sorry I asked.”
The eye contact is scalding.
Something’s up. Loki’s silent, you’re uncomfortable, and those pants look pretty damn good on him.
Some butts are made for grey sweatpants.
Loki finally breaks, turning around and walking away from you without another word—yeah. Butts like that.
Did I mention you’re uncomfortable?
You loudly clear your throat as you stand, shoving every last thought about your fake boyfriend doctor god to the absolute furthest corner of your mind. Time for mature, professional interactions.
“Need a hairbrush?”
“What?” Loki whirls around at your voice, eyes wide. “Why would I need—”
“Easy, Loki,” you laugh, raising your hands in defence. “Just thought I’d offer.”
He goes silent for a moment, then slowly nods.
“Please.”
He takes it from you without so much as a glance.
Riiip. Riiip. Riiiiiiip.
You chance a quick look into the bathroom only to find Loki positively ripping through his hair with the frenzy of a madman, his hair a wet, matted, tangled mess of dark locks that you could’ve sworn wasn’t like that when he came out of the shower.
Or any other time you’ve seen him, for that matter.
“Loki,” you quickly call, slipping into the bathroom before he can lash out at you again. “Stop, you’ve gotta be gentle, stop—stop—”
He scowls when you grab the brush out of his hand, your other hand smacking him lightly on the arm. “I can do this myself,” he grits out, fingers finding the back of his head and rubbing there with a wince. “Don’t touch me.”
“You’re hurting yourself.” You hold up the brush with a sheepish grin. “Can I, um, can I help?”
There’s a moment of hesititation—then deep contemplation, deciding whether he can live with the shame, you guess—followed by another curt nod.
“Sit on the edge of the bathtub, yeah?”
Surprisingly enough, he does as you say, and when the brush meets his scalp, he flinches.
“Sorry, sorry.”
Staring from the bottom up, you try to work your way around the knots upon knots of matted hair, tugging as gently as possible and trying with every ounce of yourself to not let your fingers brush against his neck.
Loki doesn’t say anything, doesn’t move hardly at all, despite your incessant tugging at his scalp. It’s far from a relaxing moment, and even further from—as some may consider it—a somewhat romantic one.
Even still, you desperately want to dispel any tension that might be starting to break through the surface.
“Your hair wasn’t all tangled when you got in the shower,” you point out, working the brush through a particularly troublesome knot near his neck. “You were using an illusion for that, too, right?”
Half-expecting him to deny it, his curt “I was” comes as a bit of a surprise.
“How come?”
“I’ve been stuck in prison,” he replies, but it’s offhanded, thrown out as an excuse.
You’ve half a mind to call him out on it, but you elect to just change the subject instead. “Have you given anymore thought to actually going to your therapy?”
“You mean go back to prison,” Loki corrects, fingers tightening on the edge of the bath. “Back in the hands of my brother and his little friends, their prodding and poking and watching me through a glass case like an animal—”
CRACK.
You both look down with a start.
“I...sorry. I’ll fix that.”
Somehow in that quick little almost-tangent, he’d gripped the bathtub edge so tightly that the porcelain cracked.
An excellent reminder of whose hair you’re brushing—and who you’ve now brought into your home, fed, and are pretending to date, all to appease a grand plan that has yet to be revealed to you.
You suddenly wish you’d brought your taser.
“We should be getting back to work soon,” you say as brightly as you can, putting extra effort into not tugging too hard on his hair as you hurry to finish. “Three-hour lunch breaks aren’t exactly advised.”
Why’d you do that for him, then?
He just nods, hands moving slightly as the edge of the tub crackles back together.
Only one more little bit of hair left to untangle, and your finger brushes just above the neck of his shirt, a jolt of near electricity zipping up your arm as Loki flinches violently, hissing a curse.
“Don’t touch me.”
Swallowing the lump in your throat—and really wishing for your taser—you hurriedly yank the brush the rest of the way through the tangled lock.
His hair moves with the sideways jerk of his head and you catch a glimpse of the pale skin at the base of his neck, normally covered by his hair and the neckline of his shirt.
...and your heart drops.
Bits of fresh red scar tissue peek out from the neckline, jagged incisions along the back of his neck and only suggesting an array of horror further beneath his shirt than you’d like to imagine.
“Loki,” you breathe, a finger catching in the neckline of his shirt to see the barely-formed scars chasing each other down his back.
He stands abruptly and snatches up your wrist, hair falling to cover the cuts and a demon in his eye screaming murder, then you’re back in your office.
“Glowing,” you blurt out before he’s reached the door, making him freeze with a hand on the knob. “That’s why you were glowing, y-you’re covering your—Loki, that’s not—you have to tell them—”
He’s back to Dr. Laing in the blink of an eye, shutting you up with a deadly glare you can see through the illusion.
“This was a mistake.”
Your hand searches the desk for your taser as you stare at him. “Okay then.”
“I liked you much better when you just played along,” he snaps, and your eyes narrow.
“I think you liked it better when I fed you,” you spit back, fingers wrapping around your taser—just in case. “And when I let you use my shower. And when I brushed your hair.”
“If you’re searching for gratitude, look elsewhere, mortal.”
“Really?” Your laugh turns cold, shaking your head at the fake doctor across from you. “I just saved your ass, and that’s how you’re gonna treat me? Okay.”
You pick up the desk phone.
Loki’s eyes narrow. “What do you think you are doing?”
“Reporting you. Again. For real this time.” You flash him a feigned smile and punch in the numbers. “And I’m telling them that you’re hiding crucial information regarding your employer for the little invasion stunt you pulled. They’re not gonna be too happy about that.”
“They owe me everything,” he hisses, taking a rapid step towards you, hand outstretched. “It was my suffering that brought this team of freaks together, it was my strategy that allowed them to become the heroes your world holds so dear.”
The phone is still ringing, and you put it on speaker. “But someone else was playing puppet master, weren’t they?”
“Hang up the phone,” he orders, snapping his fingers. “Stop this. You don’t know what you’d be starting.”
The phone keeps ringing and Loki’s eyes flit up to yours, wide and—huh.
Panicked.
That’s clear panic in his eyes, fear; Loki’s afraid of something.
“Please.”
Reluctantly, doubtfully, you put the phone back on the receiver.
“You better start talking,” you tell him, dropping back into your chair. “Where’d those cuts come from?”
Instead of answering, Laing-Loki just stares at you, those illusive eyes boring into your skull; you’re glad he’s not Loki right now.
Your grip tightens on the taser.
“Stop it.” It’s barely a growl through gritted teeth, barely intelligible.
His fingers touch down on the desk, a little lean to his body that makes you recoil, wishing you could curl into a little ball and escape the burning in his eyes, but you find yourself unable to break the gaze.
“I said stop,” he repeats, and this time it’s a warning.
“Stop what?”
“You’re pitying me.” The corner of his lip quirks upwards.
It’s not exactly a dashing smile.
“No, I’m not,” you counter with a frown. “Don’t flatter yourself, I care about a lot of people.”
“You’re full of it, aren’t you?” Loki laughs, shards of ice against your skin. “You and your caring heart, you want to fix me, rehabilitate me; I’m just another little project for you, hm?”
“Know what? Never mind. I don’t give a shit about you.” You pull yourself to your feet, plastering a smile on your face and pointing a finger at the door. “Now get out of my life. I’m done helping you, I’m done.”
“You and I,” he laughs, a finger gesturing between the two of you, “we’re breaking up. This is over. Robert Laing deserves better.”
Okay, this is all a joke. Sure, Loki, we can laugh about it.
Smacking his hands on the desk once more, he smiles and pushes himself off, spinning on his heel with a swish of his lab coat.
“Oh, and sympathy?” He turns when he reaches the doorway, halfway out and turning to throw one last grin your way. “Not a good colour on you.”
Up goes your middle finger—and he laughs once more.
The last glimpse of Dr. Laing—Loki—you get is him striding away from you, lab coat fluttering around him, little droplets of dark red starting to stain through the white fabric covering his back.
The illusions must be fading.
