i love how during nanami’s drive she’s like “touga you gotta listen to me this guy is fucked up i just saw him performing some of the most horrifically unspeakable acts of violence” and akio is like [chuckling smugly] “hmmm….. what you saw….. yes, of course, a child’s mind is clouded by their limited perception….. and yet…. what you think you saw is merely an illusion…… due to solipsism.” and nanami doesn’t even pause to consider it, immediately she’s just like “what the fuck is this evil freak talking about.”

do you guys remember when disney would hire the original animators for a film to make a whole new scene just for the fucking dvd re-release and now they wont even advertise their animated films

Wow another adult animated show headed by people who don’t know jack shit about the medium and then calls animation inferior and throws their artists under the bus and calls the audience stupid for watching animated media and thinking the only thing worthwhile about adult animation is making it gross and shocking and going “this isn’t like your Saturday morning cartoons haha you fucking idiot” while actually good animated shows with some level of maturity and respect for their audience gets axed left and right

Disappointed but not surprised in the slightest

#looking at you Velma HBOMax #I couldn’t even finish the first episode it’s just so unfunny and poorly written #saw that gag abt adult animation floating around and it really grinds my gears so I made this post yeah #also I went into the show expecting a dark satire but it didn’t even deliver on the good satire part 90% of it is just #‘isn’t this trope stupid’ and doing it #there are deeper issues I have with this show but the animation angle is easier to post about I think #also woke up to the news of Dead End Paranormal Park getting axed #and thinking back to how Hbo max did Infinity Train #it’s just rubbing lemon juice and pouring salt over a wound y know #also can we get people who respect animation to head animated projects instead of this trend please…#same thing happened with Housebroken where the writers kept demanding last minute changes because they don’t understand that #you can’t ‘reshoot’ scenes in animation like you would live action #just treat your artists with some fucking respect it’s not that hard

oh my god I know like it sounds weird to say this when it's just avatar but the original show has aang go back to the southern air temple to show katara and sokka his home only to find evidence of the genocide of his people and the loss of his loved ones and it's quiet until you see his grief and his rage but you just see the aftermath a hundred years later and the netflix adaptation makes it feel like they wanted it to be a cool action movie with an epic scene showing the fighting and running of the airbenders like that side by side with aang running away and it's like ??? okay it's "darker" congratulations I can see that's what the goal is based on the differences in firebending and early on screen deaths go and focus on every bit of violence for the audience's lazy sadistic pleasure instead of any of the characters personal narratives especially the women that can all be taken right out + the discovery of different places all over the world in the earth kingdom and outside of it. put everything in omashu so they don't get to meet people and see the diversity of the world and each town and SEE what life is like for them under war and have these experiences with all these people build up to something bigger at the end

#changing the order of when the audience discovers new information in favor of a more linear storytelling was a bad idea #it came off as so bizarre like adding in these types of scenes so that it's just cooler and more intense #when the original show had 20 min long episodes 20 episodes per book not much time was needed. but so much was missed in the live action?#because they had to add and drag out things like this that just feel wrong #and it's not very good every event in the live action felt very smushed together like no scene stood out no contrast just the same level #of flatness all around you dont even get a chance to really feel anything about what happens on screen #when everything happens so surface level and without much real emotion it just happens so something can happen after that and so it can end #it felt like watching a bad movie everything that gave the cartoon any meaning was taken away #adding in that weird airbenders genocide scene towards the beginning but leaving out katara's inspiration of haru and those earthbenders #was it not cool enough did it take too much away from sokka's romance plotlines #one of the most important book 1 katara episodes #it felt like the natla script was written by people who are writing from memory based on what they watched 10 years ago

#harley quinn #harleen quinzel #dc comics #tw abuse mention #bop was good certainly but its still not like an amazing telling of her story #none of those three have actually finished the job. tss at least had a scene where she references him and his treatment #but its never flat out stated. they just cant say hes physically abusive and that he hits her for some reason #bop literally could have done that in just the opening alone #they could have just told her actual story and not erase her jewishness and make it clear how the relationship was #because if you don't know it's easy to take it as a casual relationship breakup so sure shes sad #they could have made it so the ending of the animated section merged with the live action and have the moment when she gets kicked out #actually be a nod to the Mad L0ve ending. they dont even need jared.#just have a dude in a green wig vaguely shown in the shadows looking out of a broken window and pan down to Harley on the ground #have her go through her break up woes but make it so she's visibly healing from injuries cause by him #its literally so simple ffs

Ive seenyou mention wuxia a few times now and i wonder what that is. Would you mind explaining it to me?

not the most qualified person to explain this as i'm not, in fact, from china; but i've read a couple of wuxia so here goes:

wuxia is a genre of fiction from china specifically, about martial artists in ancient china. i don't think a specific time period is like required? obviously some dynasties are more popular but idk how it goes in that front. it just has to be Not Today and probably Too Long Ago. like pre industral revolution i think. again idk if that's a requirement, but most i've seen are from around the same relative murky pre-electricity era.

xianxia is a subgenre of wuxia that's specifically more fantasy-like, and it's not just martial arts, but also spiritual powers and cultivation (which i have no fucking clue how to explain without two hours and three tangents other than chinese magic system. if you've ever heard of chi/qi as an energy, it appears there). so like- genshin is by all accounts a xianxia, it just doesn't use the more common specific xianxia terms like cultivation. some of those are very weird to translate and probably not common for the average non-wuxia reader, so it makes sense why they're going for alternatives.

chongyun and xingqiu and xianyun are very much straight out of a xianxia. xianyun's entire story quest was the closest genshin has gotten to a straight xianxia plot so far. i highly reccomend ashikai's video on unnecessary visions if you want more info on why genshin is a xianxia hahah

cyanide narwhal has some talk of some stuff from xianxia, but that's mostly because well- fucking liyue, that's how it works there. the whole light energy striking down someone who's getting powerful and giving them godhood if they survive the strike is, while not exactly like that, something that happens in some xianxia as well. like the way adepti work in general is just very xianxia. ashikai does a much better job explaining it than i do tbh but yeah

TL;DR: wuxia is chinese martial arts fiction in ancient china, and xianxia is a wuxia subgenre with more magic elements. also genshin is a xianxia

#i was going to recomend some xianxia if you're curious but like #genuinely don't know which one is a good starting point #like i'm tempted to say just dive headfirst into mdzs like most of us did but like #is mdzs the best place to start if you know nothing? unsure #genuinely #given how it's made to feel more lighthearted and formatted more like it's a fucking videogame #svsss might be a good launching pad #but tbf it's been a while since i read it #also it has unskippable sex scenes (i think??) so like- if you don't want to read that you're kind of out of luck there #not that mdzs doesn't have that either but they're not literally Plot Relevant. like the plot does not hinge on their horizontal tango #there's probably a good wuxia to start out there but i can't really remember right now #like mdzs is the easiest to recomend bc it's trial by fire and you're going to come out of the other end knowing like 80% of it all #plus it's not nearly as traumatizing as some of the other options #and it's so easily accessible it's almost funny #like take your pick: novel. live action. animation. audio drama. comic #it's fucking everywhere and the fandom is fucking huge so that's a giant plus #but that doesn't change the fact that idk if you can watch a couple episodes to get a feel for the wuxia genre. like would that work??#so i guess i'll leave that to everyone else to comment with any recomendations if they have a good one #for like an introductory work #or just decide mdzs is just the easiest point of entry. that can always be it. i mean we all made it anyway
