The Light in Ariel’s Grotto Comes From the Surface.
That’s all. That’s so cool and perfect. It has to be hidden, but it’s not a dark and gross place, because to Ariel, everything in it is beautiful. Because it comes from her beloved Surface.
Of course, all light under the sea logically comes from the surface, that isn’t special. But in the rest of the ocean, the light from the surface is just generally dispersed so you don’t notice it. In her grotto, it’s not general—it’s focused on. The circular, tower-like shape of her grotto means all the attention is drawn up, to the surface, not just to the gallery of stuff she’s collected.
The Surface is the light that Ariel can see everything in her grotto by. Just like how she sees everything differently than the others under the sea, because she’s been up to the surface before. Her perspective is different. She literally sees everything in a different light.
The set design for this part of the movie is so cool.
(I know it’s obvious but I feel like if we appreciated the obvious more often we would realize why these movies are so good)

Following the hype for Edgerunners, I created a little pamphlet to introduce the concept of cyberpsychosis to my players. It's visually entrenched in the universe's style, but has actually useful information!

Going Live 03 - 3D to 2D
Although our team continued to create stylised 3D tests for environments we were getting quite similar results overall and couldn't get close to what we had in mind. After receiving feedback from Wild Child about how animating in 2D over 3D backgrounds could pose technical issues we shifted our focus to wards an entirely 2D workflow.
I started off by looking into the UPA/00's Cartoon Network style we were using as reference and created a background test.

Background style concepts:
Using 2D allows for more instant control over how things look within the scene. It's easier to adjust areas if changes are proposed and generally easier to make 2D animation work over 2D environments.

Comparing Robertryan Cory’s “Choir Boys” designs to their final versions in the episode. I always wondered why these weird designs would pop up all the time in Season 6.
I really wish they would’ve kept the Squidward expression from the original layout, but it’s most likely they had to tone it down because of their budget at the time.
Also Squidward doesn’t wear his helmet in the original, I just noticed.
