Mental Math Sucks

Before we get into this, I’d like to clarify that I can do math fairly well. Give me a paper and freedom to solve it however I wish, and I perform at above average skill.

But I need the paper. If I don’t have the paper, the numbers don’t stay still in my head unless I expend time and energy to envision them in detail, which leads to a lot of situations like this:

The person gives me a problem, say 2657/6, and I don’t have access to paper, so I write it out in my head and talk a little to solidify it.

Then the person gets impatient and decides to butt in “helpfully.”

This ruins my mental layout of the problem, and they usually move onto asking me the next step while I’m still processing the new number and trying to fix the rest of them. Guess what happens during the next steps? New numbers are added, and I have to figure out where they came from and where they go.

And as if they’re a genius that can calculate stuff instantly in their heads while simultaneously having a conversation, they wonder why I haven’t finished the problem yet.

So I don’t understand why anyone would expect a person to do math involving more than 2 or 3 digits in their head. Who keeps their imaginary numbers that organized? What the heck is wrong with using paper? It’s so much easier to make mistakes in your head, so why use mental math at all after basic addition and times tables?
