Forgot to post this, but the ISU has posted the list of World Rankings after the World Championships. Points are given for this season and the last two seasons for best two results in each category (Championship, GP/JGP and International events). I’m not posting the Season’s Rankings, because we only had one competition that counted this year.
Top 20 Listed
Men
Yuri Altin - RUS - 4286
Seung-gil Lee - KOR - 3731
Otabek Altin - KAZ - 3658 @otabekvoiceblog
Jean-Jacques Leroy - CAN - 3273 @jjleroy-rp
Leo de la Iglesia - USA - 2850 @leodelaiglesia-skates
Michele Crispino - ITA - 2833
Emil Nekola - CZE - 2815
Guang-hong Ji - CHN - 2671 @guanghongvoice
Christophe Giacometti - SUI - 2636
Phichit Chulanont - THA - 2573
Adam Loughton - GBR - 2256
Michael Anderson - USA - 2178
Alexei Yevtushenko - RUS - 2166
Kenjirou Minami - JPN - 2148
Carlo Bonacci - ITA - 1988
Andrei Egorov - RUS - 1741
Alexander Carpenter - USA / Dmitrii Andreyev - RUS - 1740
Sergei Ivanov - RUS - 1714
Souta Yamada - JPN - 1605
Jack Morgan - USA - 1456
Of course, this season was very strange. The standings will change once they update things for next season, skaters will get moved around. Chris will continue to drop as he’s not competing anymore. JJ and Otabek will drop probably. GH only had one competition in the 2018-2019 season, so once that’s dropped, he should actually go up.
Ladies
Sara Crispino - ITA - 4249
Mila Babicheva - RUS - 4170 @milababichevashere
Ashley Rodriguez - USA - 3310
Hanako Furutani - JPN - 3304

Mila is closing in on Sara, but Sara still managed to stay ahead overall, though it’s so close between them.

day 0/7 of jump rope
quarantine puts me out of shape. i’ve tried every workout possible -- HIIT, circuit training, workout challenge, push ups challenge, yoga -- as well as finding the best schedule possible. it wasn’t working.
it made me realize how much i’ve missed the gym and took it for granted. i’ve became inconsistent and unmotivated to become fit. what made me extremely unmotivated was comparison, i found myself comparing my fitness progress with other people’s. it was detrimental to my mindset as it urges me to beat their progress in the most unhealthiest way possible. not only did i stopped using social media with click-bait crap (i don’t blame them, youtubers need that cash money), i decided to take on a simple challenge. a simple workout routine.
7 days: 30 minutes of jump rope.
inspired by michelle choi’s “i ran every day for a week during quarantine - this is what happened” video. i don’t have the accessibility to jog in my area, so i substituted running with jump rope as it involves cardio. she and i have the same goal, which is to take care of one’s health and to clear one’s mind. lately, i haven’t been eating as well and my mind has been muddled with anxious thoughts. maybe, jump-roping wouldn’t be a bad idea to deal with these prolonged issues.
i’ve purchased my jump rope two years ago, i think, and i’ve used it for a while then stopped. now, i’m picking it up again to do this simple exercise, which has benefits such as your cardiovascular system, decrease the likelihood of future injuries, and improves overall health.
i found a few links to take a look at to understand why jump rope is as good as circuit training or any kind of workout.
https://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifestyle/benefits-jumping-rope-you-probably-dont-know.html
http://southsidefitness.ie/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/7-Bebefits-of-skipping-ropes.pdf
https://www.healthline.com/health/jumping-rope-to-lose-weight#results
i aim to document how i feel before and after jump-roping, and stick to the 30 minutes. i don’t aim to lose weight or to quickly regain muscle, i aim to take care of my body and to improve my cardiovascular system because being inside and sitting all the time can damage our bodies in the long run. perhaps, after a week, i could continue jump-roping and hopefully include it in a workout routine.

Now Serving : In My Blood by Bo Bech
In My Blood (2018) is the first Now Serving event I went to. Now Serving is a cookbook store in Los Angeles’s Chinatown, and you can read some great stuff about the shop and the owners here. Ken and Michelle are warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable, and Frankie is adorable.
Confession: It took me so long to go to one of these because I just assumed you had to purchase the book being profiled in order to attend. Turns out it’s 100% free and purchases are optional (but really difficult to turn down!).
Danish chef Bo Bech (Restaurant Paustian, Geist) was wearing a black shirt and loose black shorts. Casual, friendly, easy-going. The night was moderated by Chad Robertson (founder of Tartine). He was sporting a baseball cap and has an assortment of floral tattoos on his arms, with a couple Eight Balls sprinkled in.
Tartine has recently expanded to LA, and Bech and Roberston crafted a special brunch prix fixe for the Manufactory. This story comes with the importance of being flexible and changing what doesn’t work. An uni + croissant dish wasn’t getting the attention it deserved, so for the second seating they moved the uni to a cracker.
It’s great listening to the restaurants and chefs that other chefs will mention. When Robertson picked Bech up from the airport, they went to Holbox for lunch. At one point during the talk, Bech makes a reference to Roy Choi’s Kogi truck. Bech called Roberton’s croissants one of the best in existence.
Bech has a slight accent but, as with most non-Americans, his English as an additional (Second? Third? Who knows.) is near perfect. Twice he asked if a word he said was indeed a word. And those words were “dishonest” and “diary.”
He was cheeky, too. A couple attendees left early. After the door closes behind him, he says it’d be great if they came back with a double espresso.
Bech often goes off-topic or askew, but you forgive him because everything he says is so engaging and important. There’s something about Europeans that you don’t see in Americans (personal opinion). He holds eye contact with such intent and really speaks to whomever he is speaking to. He would often grab Robertson’s leg or shoulder when speaking to him or about it.
This talk made me wish I had brought some sort of notebook, but taking in the moment was great as well. Some standout vignettes that I can remember, in no particular order.
Begeistret. This word is printed on the back of the book and means something along the lines of “enthusiasm.” It was the original name for the restaurant Geist in Copenhagen. There should be an enthusiasm about food, an enthusiasm about life, and Bech hoped the restaurant would foster and impart that enthusiasm. But perhaps it would not be an easy word for all to say, so it was shortened and the restaurant gained the name “Geist.”
It was meant to represent all the same ideas and feelings, but Bech learned later that it can mean “ghost” in other languages. But oh well.
Publishing. The book is self-published. It’s done the way Bech wanted it done, and not done the way a publishing house would have told him to do it. The photos are done by Bech (he would not call himself a photographer but he would call photography his hobby). And the watercolors are done by studio All the Way to Paris.
Writing a recipe. Is difficult! Because how do you explain what you have been doing naturally. The book was cut down from 200+ recipes to 100. Maybe because 100 is a nice number. Maybe because he was tired of writing recipes.
He grabs Robertson’s leg while saying, how are you supposed to explain how something should feel when you touch it? What size pan you should use and why? What color something should be when it’s done? When all these things are natural to him at this point.
He tried to make the recipes written as simply as possible. He didn’t want readers to get bogged down with words.
Eat your own food. He noticed and called out that chefs don’t really take the time to eat their food. They’ll taste spoonfuls here and there, but it’s so rare they sit and consume the full dish(es) as a guest would. Bech said, smartly, that chefs should be eating their own food. Really taking the time to see how it sits with you, feels with other dishes, etc. And when he had this realization, he himself made sure to sit down and eat his own food.
Proust Questionnaire. Bech didn’t talk about this, but while flipping through the book, one of the first elements (a section called “Safari”) is his answers to some questions, the Proust Questionnaire. It’s “said to be capable of revealing any person’s innermost thoughts.”
It was very fitting and very unsurprising that Bech opened with something like this. That honesty and authenticity really shone throughout the talk and sets the tone for the book.
Opening a restaurant. He described this as an act of good. If you’re opening a restaurant, you want to do something good for someone. If this isn’t what you want to do, perhaps you should not open a restaurant.
The Bottleneck. Bech described this term as one would describe “micromanagement.” He preached the important of stepping back and trusting others to fill in, because that’s how growth and evolution happen. And sometimes you’ll find that someone does something better or in a better way than you do. Again, it was great to hear someone in his position acknowledge that.
Don’t Be a Ghost. A little girl (I’m bad at aging children, but let’s say ten) was in the audience. At the end of the quick Q&A, he made sure to ask if she had any questions. She had none. Did she want to be a chef? She wasn’t giving verbal responses but I can assume her answer was either a “no” or a shrug because next he asked if she knew what she wanted to be. Dad pipes in to say she’s not sure yet.
Bech sits back and says, “I was a ghost until I was twenty-four.” Twenty-four was when he found a passion, his passion for food. Before his passion he was a ghost. He was collecting money so he could come home and hang out with his friends. “Don’t be a ghost.”
Upcoming. When asked about a next project, Bech did not confirm one way or the other, but offered this dream. He wants to study what happens at the dinner table and speak on it. Conversations, how we enjoy food in company. And to photograph it as well. If that project ever comes to fruition, I would love to check it out. (Or be part of it, honestly, one can dream).
There were so many more gems from this talk and this evening, but it’s getting late and if I don’t finish this soon I’ll get bored of it and abandon.
I wasn’t planning on buying the book, because I’m trying to Marie Kondo my life and make intentional purchases. But his personality really sold me, and my friends saying they were sold really sold me.
When we got to the register, it was a shocking $93.08 (the most I have ever spent on any singular book, easily), but we were at the point of no return.
All books had been pre-signed, but Bech was at the register to personalize and chit chat. Again, really holds eye contact, really makes you feel everything he’s saying is genuine and just for you.
When I got home and flipped through the self-published behemoth, it became clear it was so much more than a cookbook. It’s an art book. And that $90 price tag started to make more and more sense.
I also did some internet digging, because I was curious. In My Blood cannot be found via Barnes and Noble. It’s available on Amazon but only through third party sellers, and starting at around $160. There’s a signed copy on ebay going for $190 (and that’s marked as a 33% decrease in price).
It can, of course, be bought directly through his site. But I couldn’t begin to guess what an international shipping fee looks like.
As always, consider buying books directly from the author or from your local independent bookstore :)
Looking forward to many more Now Serving events (thought my wallet is going to need to chill).

DWCS Season Finale Primer
Joey
August 25th, 2019
Dusko Todorovic vs Teddy Ash Middleweight
Dusko Todorovic 8-0, 25 years old From Serbia Secutor MMA
Fun Factoids:
-Dusko Todorovic already comes into the DWCS with plenty of quality wins on his resume. He has a win over funky Brazilian UFC fighter Michel Pereira (up a weight class for Pereira), DWCS fighter Alexander Poppek (up a weight class for Todorovic), Pride veteran Kazuo Takahashi and then undefeated fighter Toni Merkulev. -Dusko is looking to become the second European born fighter to win a contract on the DWCS. The first one was Croatian fighter and Stipe Miocic training partner Aleksa Camur. -6 of Dusko's 8 wins have been recorded (one fight has no listed methodology for the result) first round stoppages.
Teddy Ash 14-4, 29 years old From Canada Shaved Bears MMA (Home of Tanner Boser)
Fun Factoids:
-Teddy Ash's record is equally loaded with names you'd know. He went 1-1 with former UFC veteran Dominique Steele, has a win over former UFC veteran Seth Baczynski, a win over DWCS veteran Cameron Olson, a loss to UFC signee (released due to PEDs) Adam Hunter AND a win over Bellator vet Viktor Valiamaki. He was also at one point scheduled to go back up to 205 lbs to fight Matt Hammil this year but THANKFULLY that fight fell through. -Teddy Ash has been a pro since 2013 and is an ALASKA FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP veteran. -Since "What do fighters do when they're not fighting?" is always of interest to some people, Teddy Ash works as a welder in the Syncrude Aurora mine.
Kailan Hill vs Impa Kasanganay Middleweights
Kailan Hill 5-0, 24 years old From California, By way of Puerto Rico Blackhouse MMA (Home to Lyoto Machida, Anderson Silva, Pedro Munhoz, Mackenzie Dern)
Fun Factoids:
-Kailan Hill has spent 4 of his 5 pro fights fighting in the LFA cage with stoppage in 3 of those 4 fights. -Hill comes into this fight with a decision win over Jhonoven Pati; Pati's pro losses prior to that? Ryan Spann (in the UFC) and Punahele Soriano (now in the UFC). His other high profile was WW Adam Fuggit, 4-1 with his sole loss coming to Bellator vet Austin Vanderford. -Hill owns two of LFA's most impressive finishes; one by step up knee into a right cross vs Adam Fuggit and the other a spinning backfist KO over 4-1 Andre Walker.
Impa Kasanganay 5-0, 25 years old From North Carolina Gym-O (Home to Scott Holtzman, Bryan Barberena and Justine Kish)
Fun Factoids:
-Impa DEBUTED in 2019. He has less than a full year's worth of experience as a pro even if he has three years of amateur experience. Madness. -Despite his relative lack of experience, Impa has appeared almost entirely for brand name MMA orgs. He's fought twice for Island Fights, once for KOTC and once for LFA. His most accomplished opponent is 4-3 (now 4-4) Devorious Tubbs. -Impa Kasangnay played college football at the university of Western Carolina as a reserve linebacker.
Sang Hoon Yoo vs Peter Barrett Welterweights
Sang Hoon Yoo 5-0, 29 years old From South Korea Busan Team MAD (Home of See Heo Ham, Dongi Yang, Stun Gun Kim and Doo Ho Choi)
Fun Factoids:
-Sang Hoon Yoo's record is truly perplexing. His first official fight on record is against a 15-6 Vitor Toffanlelli. He followed that up by fighting not a single person over .500 from that point on. -Hoon Yoo's fights has made lightweight before but two of his last three fights have been at a 165 lb catchweight so keep an eye on that as it pertains to a fighter making or not making weight. -Yoo is looking to become the first Korean fighter to win a DWCS contract.
Peter Barrett 10-3, 33 years old From Boston Team Sityodong (Home of Kenny Florian, Rob Font, Saul Almeida), Lauzon MMA (Home of Calvin Kattar, Rob Font )
Fun Factoids:
-Not sure if this counts as fun for Barrett but he comes into this fight 2-3 in his last four fights. His last win was over longtime MMA veteran Jay Ellis who boasts a rugged 17-75 (!) record. -Barrett was scheduled to compete on a Bellator card in 2018 but his opponent popped for PEDs and the fight was nixed. He never got another opportunity with the organization. -Peter Barrett works as a bartender outside of fighting.
Ben Sosoli vs Dustin Joynson HEAVYWEIGHTS BIG BOI WEIGHT
Ben Sosoli 7-2, 25 years old From Australia Resilience Training Centre
Fun Factoids:
-Ben Sosoli was a contestant on TUF 28; he lost to eventual winner Juan Espino in the quarterfinals. -Ben Sosoli has a professional boxing background as well as a background as a rugby player prior to a knee injury. -Sosoli's best opponent is Kelvin Fitial who he split fights with.
Dustin Joynson 5-0, Age Unknown From Canada Zugec Ultimate MMA (Home to Sarah Kauffman and Ryan Janes)
Fun Factoids:
-Joynson debuted in 2014 and then took three years off, in large part due to the fact that they couldn't find him a fight. Joynson struggled -Joynson did a large portion of his camp for this fight at Syndicate MMA and the UFC PI. -Dustin Joynson works in a school in Canada and he said he won't quit his job even if he gets a UFC contract.
Dylan Lockard vs TJ Brown Featherweights
Dylan Lockard 6-1, 27 years old From Boston Sityodong MMA (Home of Kenny Florian, Rob Font, Saul Almeida)
Fun Factoids:
-Lockard's one pro loss is to 3-3 Shane Manley although he did rebound from that to win three fights against opponents with records above .500. -Lockard is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. -Dylan Lockard has some weight class versatility as he's fought as high as 155 lbs (in his last fight, a five round championship fight) and as low as 135 lbs at the start of his career.
TJ Brown 13-6, 29 years old From Arkansas
Westside Fight Team (Home of Bryce Mitchell)

As a mixed race American born woman with American born family members of both Caucasian and African American descent I am intuitively and logically aware that I must aim to only comment online in politics when I am intuitively and logically certain that I can comment both wisely and bias-free even when I communicate a sentiment viewpoint far from popular in a courageous, brave and self confident manner. Today is one of the days where my creative intuition says to take a day off from commenting on yahoo politics and look at other sources instead. However for those who are curious my most recent yahoo online political comments are from Saturday August 4, 2018.However, the following are some of the resources I have fortunately unearthed, including the banana cream recipe link from the cookie rookie that inspired the search. I also like that Josuweit acknowledges that it is far from realistic to expect most men and women with student loans to repay back their student loans in just a few years minus taking into the account the demographic and socio-economic background of said student loan holder. It is common knowledge that many people are going to possibly need at least 10 to 15 years andor more to completely pay them back. I intend to check out Andrew Josuweit's student loan hero website for my own ideas and inspiration for successfully repaying the student loans for both myself and my husband's on a consistent basis (my target goal is to completely repay both of our student loans by the year 2030 andor sooner).  Many people say to avoid comparing your own career and money success to others because each person's situation is unique based on their background, their career, said job security of chosen career, where they live etc. I am intuitively aware that this same principle of avoid comparing yourself to another person's success story applies with student loan success stories and I am glad that Andew Josuweit is brave/courageous/self confident enough to imply that a person trying to compare their student loan journey with his does not have to unless they feel comfortable in doing so. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ceo-paid-off-100-000-172358311.html A CEO Who Paid Off $100,000 In His Own Student Loans Used To Think They Were Predatory-but After 6 Years of Helping People Pay Theirs, He's Changed His Mind by Mark Abadi Business Insider July 30, 2018 https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ceo-paid-off-100-000-172358311.html creative fiction storytelling idea; profile of 15 student loan repayment success stories of men and women from various racial and socio-economic backgrounds who repaid their student loans within 20 years andor less after committing to their chosen place of residence to reside for the rest of their current lifetimes regardless if others may have been wondering if they were aiming too high/dreaming too big. quickie Mini story start time 826 pm quickie mini story conclusion time 949pm important note; I Stella Carrier do believe in the helpfulness of career and personal mentors regardless of psychic ability which is why I enjoy the theme of incorporating mentors into my creative fiction stories. However, for practical reasons I intend to consult in career andor personal mentors with intuitive abilities After  sometime around January to May 2019 andor later. part 3 within 48 to  57  to 70 to 74 hours andor less purpose of this fiction story; Fortunately I feel as a surge of creativity within me is surging and I want to encourage it for this creative fiction writing. Additionally, I have a creative idea to combine my creative fiction hobby with the meld of sleeptime dreams and future higher self communication through the creative fiction storytelling portal using one of the creative fiction characters starting with the happy transition of using a character connected to Corey Cooke. Corey Cooke here on my way to speak with a career counselor who also happens to be a practicing psychic on the side who helps me with my career goals in being a cook. The career counselor's name is Allany and she also helps me analyze my sleeptime dreams and has spiritual meetups weekly involving future higher self communications and helping many men and women connect to their celestial spirit guides. I Corey Cooke am communicating with you today because my sister Abbie Duncan had a strange dream that a female spirit she knew in her waking life (let's just call her Belenne) found a way into her sleeptime dreams for the purpose of understanding her actions before planning her reactions. What was the sleeptime dream; Abbie Duncan saw Belenne in a law classroom next door to some witchcraft museum that looks like the museum of witchcraft in England and Abbie Duncan knew that this did not apply to her because Abbie Duncan has zero interest in becoming a lawyer or studying law. However, it was only after Belenne use some of her intuitive and magician talents to hack her way into Abbie Duncan's sleeptime dreams did my sister Abbie Duncan realize that Belenne has an interest in law which surprised my sister Abbie because Abbie logically thought that Belenne wanted to stay a leader of the Burrito/Sandwich  hybrid food truck that is connected to 20 other food trucks that hire over 100 people. Because of Belenne hacking into Abbie Duncan's sleeptime dream my sister Abbie Duncan saw a vision of Belenne on a romantic date with a male named Gayel at a concert similar to a hybrid of Tomorrowland and iheartradio only seconds later after seeing Belene in a law classroom. My sister Abbie Duncan admitted to me she begged her subconscious to wake her up when she saw a graphic scene seared in her mind of Belene straddling Gayel on some public toilet in an intimate act. My sister Abbie Duncan is far from a prude and highly regards bothy Belene and Gayel professionally speaking and still has yet to understand why she would have a sleeptime dream of Belene and Gayel in this plot fashion. This is because I Corey Cooke have to avoid mentioning more details on Gayel to for karmic reasons. Anyhow, less than 2 to 3 seconds of my sister seeing that graphic scene she felt some benevolent force grant her wish and plucked her inside a hybrid witchcraft/sleeptime dream museum that one of her spirit guides in the dream told her is slated to open on earth in a location bordering Maryland Virginia somewhere between the years 2350 to 2355. The same spirit guide that told my sister to just call him  explained that he understand's how she is feeling because my sister Abbie Duncan knows in waking life that Gayel is very much passionately in love with Marina but is torn between his feelings with knowing that feeling how Belene loves him alot andor as a singer put in her song where she is telling her lover that she is going to love him the most. However, my sister Abbie Duncan explained that this sleeptime dream where she saw Belene use her magician spellwork to get inside her sleeptime dreams was meant to symbolize to her that she has some unfinished business with a male connected to law sometime within the next 5 years or less and that she is correct to avoid listening to other people's stereotypes of what she ought to study and that studying law is Belene's dream, not Abbie Duncan's. Truth be told Abbie Duncan wants to study in something that many people would far from expect her too but as her brother have been asked to avoid revealing that and to instead communicate that Belene coming into her sleeptime dream was more to symbolize that she is just as capable as eventually becoming a leader as Belene and is just as powerful magic wise thought this may take her around 5 years or less to finally come into her own. What this lesson has to do with Abbie Duncan and everyone else; Before Abbie Duncan woke from the sleeptime dream, Belene told her inside the witchcraft museum I know Abbie Duncan that part of your undercover identity is that of some celestial cupid and I blame you for helping Marina enchant my man Gayel. My sister was shocked by Belene exclaiming this because Marina is actually beautiful on her own and actually attracted Gayel through her own intellectual prowess and beauty as she is a natural seductress. Before Abbie Duncan could explain what was going on to Belene she was transported to a library  that had a book titled recording how much you make and save to greater good luck and good fortune. Right as Abbie Duncan was about to go near that book a vision of Marina come up to her and said look up at the sky open your eyes  and right then Abbie Duncan saw a vision of me her brother holding a gold and peach book titled cookbook with the words future higher self right her and sleeptime museum. Seconds later Abbie Duncan asked Marina a question but she disappeared by then and simply heard this male voice upon waking up; I miss you Abbie my soul is calling to you as a kindred soul from knowing you both in past lives and in heaven, please have compassion for Belene using you as a vessel for trying to understand why Gayel is drawing more in love with Marina.  Marina is similar to one of his female soulmates he knows from a past lifetime yet he is going to meet for the first time within 5 to 6 years or less from now. This female soulmate of his is currently 53 years old and has been employed in military law since her 30s and you are to be the indirect conduit of them meeting yet you are only going to know how you did this about 1 to 11 years after this occurs as you too have yet to meet her, just please heal both the karma between you and Belene by creating fiction characters at least 3 times a week processing their sleeptime dreams through a witchcraft museum/sleeptime dreams museum at least once a week and any location you want at least 2 other times a week just make sure that these creative fiction sessions are being mentored analyzed by either that creative fiction character's future higher self andor celestial spirit ally team member such as a guardian angel, spirit guide etc. This suggestion may sound out of the ballpark field for you but please do this as this is going to build your imagination and that of your readers in connecting to your intuition which creates a channel of love between both your critics and allies regardless of the type of magic they practice andor spiritual beliefs. This also opens the direct spiritual doorway for your spirit guides Abbie Duncan and Belene's spirit guides to collaborate and hold meetings together for happier/more beneficial harmony and a win win for everyone involved. Before my sister Abbie Duncan could get the answer out of the male voice on when she is going to meet him in waking life since at least the mystery has been cleared that law school is far from her cup of tea I Corey Cooke admit that I woke her up. The ladies of figure skating: heading into the 2017-2018 season
Here we are, we finally made it to the Olympic season and a lot of stuff has happened since Sochi. The Russian dominance started by Adelina Sotnikova and Yulia Lipnitskaya, continued by Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Elena Radionova and Anna Pogorilaya and finally Evgenia Medvedeva and Alina Zagitova. The new generation of Japanese ladies led by Satoko Miyahara; later joined by Mai Mihara, Wakaba Higuchi and most recently Marin Honda. The new generation of South Korean ladies starting with So Youn Park, then Dabin Choi and the 3 junior phenoms Eunsoo Lim, Young You and Ye Lim Kim. The rise of the Canadian ladies Kaetlyn Osmond and Gabrielle Daleman. Basically it’s safe to say the PyeongChang Olympics will see the deepest field ever - dare I say not only in ladies, but overall in all disciplines and you’re all lucky to witness it. The ladies will have to deliver perfect programs because the slightest mistake could be enough to make the difference between #1 and #5. The 2016 World Championships was a good example of what happens when literally everyone in the house delivers; the top 7 ladies scored above 200. You read that right, top seven. The 2017 World Championships was the opposite example, only the top 3 ladies scored over 200 so the Olympics can really go either way. I’m hoping it’ll be more like 2016 and less like 2017. But until then, let’s see who are the ladies we should keep an eye on this season.  (the list is based on the order of the World Standings)

This is such a random post, but I watch a lot of youtube and it’s the best distraction/ way to pass time. I watch a variety of channels, and I’m subscribed to over 80 channels, and have about 1900 videos in my watch later list soooo :))) enjoy. No particular order but I’m doing 20 channels because 2020 (which needs to end right now). I’m going to link my favourite video of theirs as well, so you’ll have something to start with if you’re interested.
fashion and lifestyle
1. bestdressed
Tumblr media
I already talked about her in my light content to consume while in quarantine post, but I’ll do it again. She is hands down my favourite youtuber. I had this phase where I was watching clothing hauls nonstop for some reason, and then I found Ashley’s channel. I couldn’t stop watching her videos. They’re fun, they have actual content, and she talks about stuff like how youtubers make money, and she gives the whole truth. Her fashion videos are so inspiring, I love her style, I love how she pairs things that you normally wouldn’t and her favourite word (say it with me, kids) juxtaposition of pieces that would ‘normally’ not be paired together.
She puts in so much effort into filming her videos, and even more into editing them. She doesn’t just do fashion videos, she does apartment makeovers, real talks, everything, but overall a fashion channel. I’ve seen her channel suddenly blow up and I think she had 500k or 600k subscribers when I started, and now she has 3.1 million :’) I want to raid her wardrobe for her thrifted pieces. Anyway, here’s my video pick(s) for her channel-
how to look cute when you’re out of f*cks
the ultimate guide to closet essentials
2. Yoora Jung
Tumblr media
I wait for her videos more than any other channel, she just has the most relatable content because her days comprise of (other than her work, which is a lot) scrolling through instagram, watching youtube, snacking, rolling around in bed and procrastinating- I love her. Also her editing is on another level, all her intros are unique and fun. She can literally sit in a chair and talk about grapes for 40 minutes and I’d still watch. Also when she speaks in Korean, its the cutest thing ever.
I followed Jungkook’s workout routine for a week // getting fit with yoora season 1 ep 1
Waking up at 5 AM for a week in college    (she works really hard as you can see. I’d never have the motivation to get up at 5)
3. ohnonina
Tumblr media
neeeeeeen < 3 Watching her videos makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Not to mention she gives a virtual hug at the end of every video :’) She does GRWM’s, k-pop, fashion, art, day in the life, studying and bullet journal videos. Everytime she hits a new 100k+ number of subscribers, she does a cooking with nina, those might be my favourite ones because she always does a korean dish. Also not really studying with nina I LOVE THOSE.

4. ur mom ashley
Tumblr media
She does fashion videos, but other content as well. She does thrift hauls, dressing out of her comfort zone type videos, and a lot of content with her siblings and boyfriend. Honestly, it’s a crackhead time when they’re around, especially her younger brother. She also makes what I eat in a day videos and I genuinely haven’t seen any other vegan person at least try to eat foods other than avocado and kale. She makes some nice recipes and eats good portions like a normal person, I really appreciate that.

6. Nuria Ma
Tumblr media
She’s eighteen, lives alone some of the time and is possibly one of the hardest working people I’ve seen, juggling school and youtube. When I started watching her I think she just turned 17 and I was going mad wondering how someone could be so organized and put together at 17. She makes her own food- three meals every day, works out, studies for hours, does youtube, and what not. She’s genuinely amazing, also look how pretty she is.

I don’t watch her makeup and beauty videos because I don’t know much about makeup, but her vlogs, fashion, and book videos are great. I feel like she’s a wise older sister that I don’t have =p I especially love her cooking videos where she makes Korean dishes that her mom used to make. She has her own clothing line too, she does some promo videos and stuff, they’re cool.

13. Wil Yeung – Cook with Confidence
Also a vegan channel. I love his simple cooking and his style of narration. He doesn’t overdo it with the voiceover, he just says ‘medium sized pan’, ‘2 cups water’, ‘stir’. I’ve tried his gochujang and chili oil videos, they’re so good. I had to make do with what I had but still really good.

Discussion #1 - Venice
What are the problematic characteristics of current K-pop "fandom"? Would it be possible for idols to begin implementing a different relationship dynamic with their fans, and if so, how?
K-pop fandoms are intense. While fandoms in general do a great job showing love and support to their idols, K-pop fandoms especially go the extra mile to show their love and support, so that they can gain recognition, whether it be through jogong (tributes, for example, buying gifts for idols or a truck selling drinks and refreshments for the crew of a drama set the idol is starring in) or doing acts of service in the name of the idol (tree-planting, rice donation etc.), as we have learned during class. However, this love and support can end up causing problems for other fandoms, when these fans get overzealous in trying to gain recognition from their idols, resulting in the fandoms clashing with one another. This clashing between fandoms, can eventually result in what Tinaliga calls “toxic competitive performativity…[where] fans no longer just support their idols’ music and highlight their successes but in the process demean or even directly attack idols’ or fandoms just because their interests and beliefs don’t align” (2018: 4). I believe that this “toxic competitive performativity” is what results in fandoms being generalized in a non-favourable way. An example of this can be found in a Reddit thread under a post titled “What are aspects of Kpop fans that you can’t stand?”, and a user under the username raisin_ states that “[they] can’t stand those who will judge a groups fans based on the actions of just a few.”
Another problem with K-pop fandom lies within the anti-fandoms. Just like how fans will do everything and anything to support idols, anti-fans will try to find every way to harm these idols, whether it’d be the idol’s reputation or the physical well-being (for example death threats). One example of anti-fans harming an idol’s reputation is Tablo’s incident regarding his academic credentials. Anti-fans created online communities such as Sangchinse and Tachinyo, and through that “[accusing] Tablo of fabricating...evidence of his degree and [displaying] his personal documents” (Shin 2015: 133). By doing this, Tachinyo members “[placed Tablo’s life] under a microscope, and the smallest biographical details faced close public scrutiny” (Jung 2012: [3.5]).  Not only did these anti-fans invade Tablo’s privacy,  they also “[positioned him] as not only an individual fraud but also a public enemy” (Shin 2015, 140). These anti-fans were able to do this because they are convinced the ability to stay anonymous on an online platform allows them to say whatever they want, and vent out their frustrations (Shin 2015: 136). In some ways, anti-fans are similar to sasaeng fans, except instead of invading an idol’s private life in hopes for intimate relationships, anti-fans invade on an idol’s private life in order to find ways to damage their reputation and ruin their image to the public.
I think it would be possible for idols to begin implementing a different relationship dynamic with their fans, by stating explicitly their hopes and expectations for their fans, and to be aware of what their fans’ behaviour. This way, the idols will know what their fans are thinking, and maybe fandoms will be able to get along and support each other while supporting their idol groups.

Responses:
There are many instances where the fans see their idol interacting with other idols, staff members, or even other fans, and have felt the sense of betrayal in the actions of their idol. Interestingly, their rage and sense of betrayal is directed towards the other party, not their particular idol, as they believe that they are 'perfect', and therefore, the other person's fault. These near-delusions seem quite far fetched, but happen quite often.
- Sarah
While I mostly agree about what you said, Venice, about how idols should explicitly their hopes and expectations for their fans, and to be aware of what their fans’ behaviour, I believe that this method will not always be the best. In cases like when Xiumin told his fans that he was receiving too many gifts, an idol explicitly stating what they want (or do not want) from fans is effective. However, in other cases, this method might be ineffective, and perhaps even backfire. For example, in the case of fandoms fighting with each other, if an idol tells their fans directly that they do not enjoy being supported by fans that demean other groups, the fans might revolt and accuse the idol of being non-appreciative of their love. On the other hand, if the idols simply show friendliness towards the rival group by mentioning the group in a good light on say, a variety show, then the fighting fandoms are more inclined to get along because of their idols’ friendship with each other.
- Emily
As Emily has stated, this is an issue that must be delicately handled. Fans even go at it amongst themselves trying to defend their respective idol/group, without either side backing down. Although in this case, the idol may not be directly involved, the virtual 'fanwars' can bring their image down, and even cause a bigger misunderstanding.
- Sarah
I definitely agree with what you’ve mentioned in your discussion, Venice. Fans do a great job of showing various kinds of support for their idols! However, as you mentioned, fans and fandom can definitely be a toxic environment. I’m part of some fandom’s online and I do see quite a lot of “fandom wars” because people disagree with what others say, which then results in users fighting with each other and even then insulting the idols they adore.
In terms of the second part of the question, I don’t necessarily agree that the idols should be aware of their fans behaviour. What I mean by this, is that how people act online (interacting with other fans from either the same or other fandoms) is something that no one can control. A lot of the negative interactions I see online stems from the fact that a lot of these people don’t understand how to have a healthy debate with each other. Like Emily noted in her comment, if an idol chooses to address things that happen between fandoms then it could lead to the fans turning their backs on their idols.
I do agree that idols need to change the dynamic between themselves and the fans; however, I think it will be very, very challenging thing to achieve and highly impossible.
-Kirin
Referring back to Emily’s comment regarding rival groups, Kirin’ comment on online behaviour, as well as fandoms fighting with eachother, I would like to point out the difference of fandom behaviours in real life, compared to those online. When fans are congregated in the same environment- for example, in our ASIA 327 classroom- even though everyone may be different in their favourite groups, we do not often see people fighting in the classroom regarding which K-pop group is more superior. It is rather interesting to notice that K-pop fans often behave more aggressively on the internet, when it comes fighting with those from rival groups, or expressing their own ideas. In real life, however, fans seem to be more quiet, and sometimes might act as if they respect their rival groups, when they actually think the opposite.
-Lily
A little off topic, but I think there’s also a difference in how people interact on the internet versus in real life, since on the internet you can be anonymous, which could explain this dissonance -- this may allow for people to voice more “problematic” opinions and bash other groups to make their biases look better, etc. more easily as they are hiding under a ‘mask’, rather than, for example, (especially) in a classroom setting with an authority (the teacher) overlooking discussion where they may not feel as comfortable voicing these opinions in real life. Also people just enjoy reading drama on the internet so these opinions tend to just get more attention in the form of retweets and the like.
-Michelle
Because no one has done this yet, I would also like to present the relationship, viewpoints and actions of sasaeng fans in the K-pop fandom. (In text citations, as well as bibliography for quotes and examples I use will be attached as well.)
Everyone wants to be noticed by their idols, thus for some very devoted fans, they buy expensive, front row tickets to concerts, or spend huge amounts of money to buy bulks of albums, in order to attend fansigns; however, many groups with huge domestic and international fan base, such as EXO or BTS, have countless fans worldwide that not everyone could be remembered by names, not even close to becoming close friends with their beloved stars. In addition, K-pop idols are often busy and packed with schedules that they do not have time to notice each and every one of their fans, even though they might wish to.  One problematic characteristic of the current K-pop “fandom” is fans intruding their idols’ personal lives, in order to become remembered by them, even in a bad way. These are called Sasaeng fans.
Sasaeng fans’ behaviors began by the hypothesized desires for bodily connection to kpop idols, as well as being recognized by them (Williams 2016, 85). Sasaeng fans feel that if they attend a concert, there will be thousands of other people attending, and that their favorite stars would not know who they are. But as sasaeng fans, they will be recognized and noted by their idols (Park et al 2012).
On November 1st, 2018, an article in Allkpop stated that, GOT7 Yongjae’s fans were sending him messages to his personal social media account. They wanted to be recognized by Yongjae, and I think that they indeed have achieved their goals; however, not in a good way. Yongjae posted these photos onto his Instagram account, reminding his fans to give him personal space and privacy.
An article in Allkpop, published July 21st, 2018, stated that a Sasaeng fan called Baekhyun during his Instagram live. Instead of spending some time chatting with his fans during his busy schedule, it was interrupted by the sasaeng fan, and we could infer that he or she called Baekhyun only during the Instagram live, so it would be paused, thus he or she could be recognized by Baekhyun.
Thus, comparing to Venice’s discussion above, I rather think it would not be possible for idols to implement a different relationship with their fans. However, many idols still have different ways of recognizing their fans. In a safe way, of course.
On November 12th, 2018, an article on Kstarlive stated that Chanyeol sat beside a crying fan during a fan sign. This shows that Chanyeol deeply cares about his fans and acted rather like an older brother by sitting beside the crying fan, comforting her.
Also, even if fans did not spend huge amounts of money on front row seats in concerts, or go to fan signs, Baekhyun also replies to his fans on his twitter account!
I look forward to hearing more about everyone’s views on this topic!
- Lily
Similar to Lily's opinion, I too concur that it will be near impossible for the existence of these types of fans to cease. There always will be people who have their own views and opinions as to their methods of showing their love. I do believe that it is possible to keep these sorts of actions and incidents to a minimum with through the constant mutual understanding and abidance of common sense by the other fans. This sort of behaviour is certainly more memorable, but it is possible to overshadow these negative instances with a larger number of positive ones.
- Sarah
One thing with fandom I think worth discussing, which I think is related to Lily’s response but to a far lesser extreme, is the sense of entitlement that often comes with supporting idols. Many fans dedicate and invest hours upon hours on end, and huge sums of money to support their “bias”, which often creates feeling as though they’re entitled for something back. Of course, that is not to say that fans do not deserve ANYTHING back. Oftentimes it is enough for fans to see their idols happy and successful. Usually, efforts to work hard on stage, act cute or charismatic and engaging with the fans in a healthy way is suffice to “repay” that sense of entitlement. It only becomes problematic when this sense of entitlement becomes delusion.
Many fans fall in “love” with their bias. I for one am guilty of this, often referring to my bias as my “husband” out of affection for example. But sometimes, when this gets coupled with entitlement, fans may feel like they actually deserve to date or marry their idol, and that the idol should not be romantically involved with anyone else. They begin wanting to know everything of their personal lives, and creating almost a fantasy wherein they are in a relationship with that idol, and when the idol does something to break that fantasy (dating scandal, etc) it creates anger for the fan. This can lead to dangerous behaviours, even going as far as situations such as death threats (as seen in APink). This is also often why fangirls get such a bad reputation, as those outside of fandoms see them as delusional and perhaps crazy.
Another issue about this is that this sense of entitlement is often reinforced by idols. When asked about their “ideal type” or if they have a boyfriend or girlfriend, many idols will attempt to please their fans by saying stuff such as “my ideal type is (insert their fanclub name here)” or “my fans are my boyfriends!”. While these playful, albeit somewhat cringey responses seem harmless to most, to some it may reinforce these feelings of entitlement and delusion, further causing them to feel like they and the idol are soulmates and MUST get married or whatnot.
Another side of the issue of entitlement is when fans perceive an idol to not do enough for their fans. An example of this is BlackPink’s Jennie’s controversy of being lazy on stage. While a number of fans tried to provide reasons for her lack of energy on stage, it still caused many people to feel upset as Jennie did not perform during their concerts nearly as energetic or as well compared to her group members or as well as she has in the past. She would on occasion forget her lines, despite only having like 4 songs to remember, causing more criticism. Whether or not she was being lazy, or had some ongoing issue to cause this, we don’t have the answer, and I’m not trying to bash Jennie. However, would you pay $100+ for an idol to not even try to give a good performance? Situations like these often justify fans’ feelings of entitlement.

(Olympics) Choi Da-bin feels late mother's presence at PyeongChang
Tumblr media
By Kim Boram
GANGNEUNG, South Korea, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) — After finishing her clean short program in the PyeongChang Winter Games ladies’ singles figure skating on Wednesday, Choi Da-bin clenched her fist and silently celebrated her personal best scores of 67.77.
Her short program song, “Papa, Can You Hear Me?” is a lament for a deceased father composed by Michel Legrand in 1983. Choi chose the music for the Olympic season in memory of her mother, who died of cancer last year.
While her mother had been battling with the disease, Choi tied her boots tightly and her skating started to bear fruit on the international stage.
Choi made a successful debut at the 2017 Asian Games held in Sapporo, Japan, to reach the top of the podium with a personal best of 187.54 points. She was the first South Korean athlete to earn a gold medal in figure skating at the Asian Games.
Later at the ISU World Championships, she recorded 191.11 points, the highest points earned by a South Korean figure skater since two-time world champion Kim Yu-na, and placed 10th to bring her country two spots at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.
After the accomplishments in the 2016-2017 season, she came into the limelight ahead of the first Winter Olympic Games on Korean soil.
The good news had helped her mother improve a little bit, and Choi was fully committed to doing her best on ice and competing in the PyeongChang Olympics.
But her pleasure was short-lived. She fell into a deep grief when her mother passed way in June last year.
Tumblr media
South Korea’s Choi Da-bin finishes her free program in PyeongChang Winter Olympics ladies’ singles figure skating at Gangneung Ice Arena on Feb. 23, 2018. (Yonhap)
Heartbroken, Choi had considered skipping the national Olympic qualifying events, but she didn’t surrender. She battled on and swept the Olympic trials to claim one of the two Olympic tickets that she had won at the 2017 Worlds.
At PyeongChang, she broke her short program personal high of 65.73 in the figure skating team event on Feb. 11.
“I had depended on my mom a lot. I could stand on Olympic ice, as she had believed in me and waited for me,” she said with tears in her eyes.
Ten days later, she pulled off another clean short program to set a personal best in the individual ladies’ singles. And she also executed nearly flawless free program to post her personal high of 199.26.
“Before the first round of the Olympic qualifiers, I was scared to compete,” she said. “But skating in the Olympics was my dream and also my mom’s. I skated in the qualifier because I didn’t want to regret (anything).”
At the Olympics, where she became the first South Korean figure skater to achieve a top 10 finish besides two-time Olympic medalist Kim Yu-na, Choi felt her mother was with her.
“If she were here, she would have given me a warm hug,” she said.

Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2018?  It’s either Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan or Gmorning, Gnight by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jonny Sun. Usually the most though provoking book for me is going to be some sort of memoir or selection of essays.
Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2018 to finally read? Another Brooklyn by Jaqueline Woodson. I didn’t know much about her books and finally came across a bunch of them at a used bookstore. This was the last book I read in 2018, and I’m still thinking about it.

Reactions to the death of U.S. Senator John McCain

Reactions to the death of U.S. Senator John McCain
(Reuters) – John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam who served as a U.S. senator from Arizona for more than three decades, died on Saturday at the age of 81.

Below are some of the reactions to his death:
SENATE MAJORITY LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL
“In an era filled with cynicism about national unity and public service, John McCain’s life shone as a bright example. He showed us that boundless patriotism and self-sacrifice are not outdated concepts or cliches, but the building blocks of an extraordinary life.”
FORMER PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA AND MICHELLE OBAMA
“Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did. But all of us can aspire to the courage to put the greater good above our own. At John’s best, he showed us what that means. And for that, we are all in his debt. Michelle and I send our most heartfelt condolences to Cindy and their family.”
FORMER PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH
“Some lives are so vivid, it is difficult to imagine them ended. Some voices are so vibrant, it is hard to think of them stilled. John McCain was a man of deep conviction and a patriot of the highest order. He was a public servant in the finest traditions of our country. And to me, he was a friend whom I’ll deeply miss.”
FORMER VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN
“As a POW, John endured the worst of what human beings can do to one another. In politics, he fell short of his greatest ambition. At the end of his life he faced a cruel and relentless disease. And yet through it all he never lost sight of what he believed most: Country First. And the spirit that drove him was never extinguished: we are here to commit ourselves to something bigger than ourselves.”
FORMER PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER
“John McCain was a man of honor, a true patriot in the best sense of the word. Americans will be forever grateful for his heroic military service and for his steadfast integrity as a member of the United States Senate.”
U.S. VICE PRESIDENT MIKE PENCE
“Karen and I send our deepest condolences to Cindy and the entire McCain family on the passing of Senator John McCain. We honor his lifetime of service to this nation in our military and in public life. His family and friends will be in our prayers. God bless John McCain.”
ARIZONA GOVERNOR DOUG DUCEY
“John McCain is one American who will never be forgotten. He was a giant. An icon. An American hero. But here at home, we were most proud to call him a fellow Arizonan. Like so many of us, he was not born here, but his spirit, service and fierce independence shaped the state with which he became synonymous.”

CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU
“Senator John McCain was an American patriot and hero whose sacrifices for his country, and lifetime of public service, were an inspiration to millions. Canadians join Americans tonight in celebrating his life and mourning his passing.”
HOUSE MINORITY LEADER NANCY PELOSI
“The nation is in tears. Today, with the passing of John McCain, Congress and America have lost a leader and public servant of deep patriotism, outstanding bravery and undaunted spirit.”
FORMER GOVERNOR OF ALASKA SARAH PALIN
“Today we lost an American original. Sen. John McCain was a maverick and a fighter, never afraid to stand for his beliefs. John never took the easy path in life – and through sacrifice and suffering he inspired others to serve something greater than self.”
AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER SCOTT MORRISON
“Senator John McCain was a true friend of Australia who was committed to strengthening the alliance between our two nations. He was a man of great courage and conviction. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Cindy, and all the McCain family during this time.”
FRENCH PRESIDENT EMMANUEL MACRON
“John McCain was a true American hero. He devoted his entire life to his country. His voice will be missed. Our respectful thoughts go to his beloved ones.”
BRITISH PRIME MINISTER THERESA MAY
“John McCain was a great statesman, who embodied the idea of service over self. It was an honour to call him a friend of the UK. My deepest sympathies go to his family, and the American people.”
GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER HEIKO MAAS
“He stood for an America that is a reliable and close partner … An America that takes strong responsibility for others and sticks to its values and principles even at difficult moments.”
EU AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED STATES DAVID O’SULLIVAN
“Senator McCain recognised the enormous benefits of Europe’s peaceful rebirth after 1945, and the crucial investment in that effort by successive U.S. administrations. He supported ever stronger transatlantic cooperation built on that shared legacy. We must all try to follow his example in strengthening EU-U.S. ties and dealing with the challenges ahead.”
MANFRED WEBER, HEAD OF THE EUROPEAN PEOPLE’S PARTY IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
“He was a real American hero, a fighter for democracy and a friend of Europe. We will strongly miss him, especially in times when politicians like him are needed.”
LECH WALESA, FORMER PRESIDENT OF POLAND
“With great sadness I accepted the news of death of Mr Senator John McCain. He was a true AMERICAN HERO and a great friend of Poland and Europe. We will not forget his friendship and he will be always in our memory.”

Myers & Chang | Boston, MA
Restaurant site
Visit date: 5/28/18
Overall: A
There’s a reason Karen Akunowicz of Myers & Chang won the 2018 James Beard award for Best Chef: Northeast.
The food is flavorful, unique, and as spicy as you want it. There are options for whatever type of eater you might be, adventurous or more cautious. Small plates = you can try a bunch of awesome things before getting fully, and their drink menu is great.
Things I ate
Tea-Smoked Pork Spare Ribs - Delicious, tender. Made our tongues tingle kinda weirdly.
Dumplings: Edamame, Mustard Greens, Wasabi - Very flavorful. Pretty sure the dipping sauce is what holds the wasabi, and it makes for an awesome nasal heat.
Untraditional Scallion Pancake - Absolutely delicious. Untraditional in the sense that it’s not super greasy.
Braised Pork Belly Buns - MUST ORDER. Non-negotiable. Yum x 10.
Ginger Scallion Bok Choy - Cooked well, but kind of soggy and oily the further down in the pile you got. The flavors were really yummy though. I’d probably try something else on their menu for veggies before I ordered this again though.
Dragon Sauce - If you like spicy food, spend the extra $1 for a side of this. It’s definitely hot, but its like a slow burn across your tongue. Don’t underestimate it though!
Michelle's affogato frozen vietnamese espresso, chocolate cake + mousse, caramelized espresso - I’m a little afraid I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight after eating this, but it was worth it. Comes served in a pint glass. Chocolate + coffee = yum.
Things I drank
Pineapple ginger soda - Unexpected and amazing. Great non-alcoholic option or dessert alternative. Not too sweet.
The Opening Line - barr hill gin, chartreuse, yuzu - Comes with what looks like a homemade cherry. I was so excited to drink this I didn’t take a picture before I ate said cherry. It was a really fantastic cocktail. Would order again.
Red rover - mezcal negroni. I don’t like mezcal or tequila but my boyfriend enjoyed this.
Cynar - Gotta have a good amaro with a chocolate dessert, obviously. Not my fav amaro but apparently its made from artichokes? So that’s cool.

(LEAD) (Olympics) S. Korea finishes 9th in short programs of figure skating team event
Tumblr media
South Korea finished ninth after four short programs of the figure skating team event Sunday at the ongoing PyeongChang Olympics.
The host country is not eligible to participate in the free programs of the team event to be held later in the day and Monday, while only the top five countries of Canada, the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR), the United States, Japan and Italy will compete in the medal-deciding sessions.
South Korea’s teenage skater Choi Da-bin performed a clean program to gain her personal best of 65.73 points and ranked 6th out of eight competitors in the ladies’ singles short program in Gangneung Ice Arena on the second full competition day of the 17-day Winter Games.
Two-time world champion Evgenia Medvedeva placed first, as expected, with 81.06 points, followed by Italy’s veteran skater Carolina Kostner and Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond.
Choi’s ranking added five points to the country’s total of 13 points.
Cha Jun-whan in the men’s singles also finished 6th to bring five points and the pairs team of Kim Kyu-eun and Kam Kang-chan and the ice dance duo Min Yu-ra and Alexander Gamelin earned one point and two points, respectively.
In the ladies’ short program, South Korean Choi jumped a flawless triple lutz and triple toe loop at the beginning of the program, which gave her 10.80 points, followed by a set of fluid spins and step sequences.
She also landed a clean triple flip and a double axel in the latter part of the program and wrapped up her first Olympic performance with a layback spin.
“I tried to feel free on the ice. I’m surprised with the higher-than-expected scores,” said the 18-year old skater. “After landing the first triple-triple jump, which I’ve struggled with for months, I was relieved.”
Her short program music, “Papa, Can You Hear Me?” composed by Michel Legrand, was a tribute to her mother, who passed away last year.
“I had depended on my mom a lot. I could stand on Olympic ice as she had believed in me and waited for me,” she said with tears in her eyes.

Earlier, South Korea’s ice dance team of Min Yu-ra and Alexander Gamelin finished 9th in the figure skating team event with 51.97 points in the short dance for the ice dancing team event.
The number is far behind their best score of 61.97 set last year due to problems caused by Min’s untied costume.
With the results, South Korea ranked 10th with eight points in total after three disciplines, while Canada is leading the race with 27 points, followed by the United States with 23 points and the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) with 21 points.
Three-time world champions and former Olympic champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada earned 80.51 to take the lead.
U.S. siblings Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani, the bronze medalists in last year’s World Figure Skating Championships, came in next with 75.46 points, and third place went to OAR Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev, who won silver at the European figure skating championships last month, with 74.76 points.
Dancing to a Latin mix of “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, “My All” by Mariah Carey and “Mujer Latina” by Thalia, Min and Gamelin went through pattern dances, footwork and lifts during the 2:58 program.
But their performance looked a bit uneasy as Min kept trying to pull up her crimson costume around her shoulder.
“My costume came undone maybe in the first five seconds of the program, and I know that if this comes undone, then the whole thing comes undone,” said Min. “I had that panic in the back of my mind. The whole time in the back of my head, I was just thinking, keep your back straight.”
But she said it was fortunate that they experienced such a costume problem in the team event, not in the individual one slated for Feb. 19-20.
“I think this is a good preparation for our individual event,” she added.

With the enthusiastic home crowd, they realized that they were definitely on Olympic ice.
“It was crazy because the second we stepped on the ice and the fans started to scream,” said Min, who was born in the United States. “I think we felt that energy throughout the entire program. I am really grateful to have the Olympics at home.”
U.S.-born Gamelin also felt the warm support from the fans in his new home country.
“Before the score was announced, the crowd started roaring and yelling. It really gave me the energy and help me go for it though we had the unfortunate costume thing,” he said. “For the individual event next week, we’ll tie it up tight and try to get it.”
The team event is measured by the rankings of each skater from the men’s singles, ladies’ singles, pairs and ice dances once they’ve skated their own programs.
The event’s medal will be decided on Monday after the free programs of the men’s singles, ladies’ singles and ice dance.
