The Feathursday Blues
Summer is coming to a close and our academic year is about to begin, so we鈥檙e feeling a bit blue about leaving summer behind, but we鈥檙e also excited about the new school year. So, this week we bring you some cheery chromolithographic birds of blue to begin our September. Unfortunately, those lovely little thrushes, the Bluebirds (Genus:聽Sialia), are not included here, but we think these blue fellows will do. They are, from top to bottom:
Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris).
Lazuli Bunting (Passerina amoena).
Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea), male and female.
Blue Grosbeak (Passerina caerulea).
This chromolithograph is from a painting by the noted German wildlife artist Gustav M眉tzel, found in our 2-volume set of Our Native Birds of Song and Beauty, by the late-19th-century director of the Milwaukee Public Museum Henry Nehrling, and published in Milwaukee by George Brumder from 1893-1896.

Have you ever seen a painted bunting?
I have never seen it in real life. But it does inspire the passion in me; the passion to free the bird in my poems. On that note, a short poem about the bird:
Painted Bunting
I saw a painted bunting in my dreams;
a coat of rainbow on its feather sleeps
and the eyes the canyon of passion
while it dances in lively fashion.
It sings just like I write
but with fondness of the heart;
I witness his last flight
as it perches on my heart.

Painted bunting, female . . . Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, Smyrna, Delaware . . . 12/20/22
One or two painted buntings are spotted in Delaware every year, usually males and usually at feeders. This rare female has been a continuing visitor for a few weeks, typically seen in the same general area of the refuge. Given her size and how well she blends in, though, I was lucky to spot her almost immediately on my first try!

Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris)
"I was obsessed with these as a kid"
"It looks neat."
Painted Bunting have two completely separate populations, each breeding and overwintering in different areas of the Americas. One population breeds mainly in South Carolina, as well as Georgia, North Carolina and Florida, and then overwinters in Cuba and other Caribbean islands. The other, larger population covers Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana and Missouri, with some breeding in northern Mexico as well, and then they overwinter almost exclusively in central and southern Mexico.
Also my friend said she had a coworker who thought these birds looked like they were colored in by a 4-year-old, so I think that every time I see a picture of them.

Painted buntings are a rare summer treat in my hometown. The females are a muted green, but the males are a colorful site! Here it is enjoying some yummy tree fruit.
