i feel like there's this misconception or maybe the writers just think differently about. why certain things are done. vaguest statement ever but for instance why do empires invade other lands. their answers seem to always pivot towards: we needed to survive. and maybe that's a very japanese history kind of view of it because [stuff im not going to get into here] but even then it's not fully the honest truth about WHY. and tangentially related is: why do people run unethical experiments in the name of science. it is true that a lot of medical and arms development owes itself to war but the worst of atrocities to do with experimentation were often not done very scientifically at all and were not much more other than just an abuse of power by people who ceased to see a group as human. the idea of a true "pureminded" scientist that is willing to go to any terrible lengths in search of The Answers is also not the whole honest truth about why that happens. that is a fiction that just ascended into real life conceptions of things because it is more convenient and can be blamed on individual flaw. science is inextricable from humanities. when people stole bodies to dissect it was in the context of a racism issue. when people corralled victims of war into facilities and cut them open and infected them with stuff and tortured twin children a lot of it really was just cruelty from prejudice and unchecked power. most of these people were not interested in science nor answers.

so when they write a character who's. well hermes is hermes and amon is amon to me as seperate people but the crux of their soul is that they search ceaselessly for answers....and the major iteration of that we see on hydaelyn is "guy who does horrific cruel terrible experiments...because he wants ANSWERS" and it's like. ? TO WHAT? it's like one of those ideas that might sound cool if you thought about it while falling asleep on the bus like "what if a guy was so depressed and dissatisfied he INFRINGED on the order and laws of NATURE ITSELF to delve its MEANING with no regard for HUMANITY" but i personally just think that's a very shallow and boring and unrealistic-in-a-stupid-way to go about things in this kind of setting. if you delve any deeper there's no substance to it and that's because it's a type of story often told to cover other stories up
