A Shot in the Dark by Silver_Pup

A time travel fix-it fic! Bilbo lives out his life only to be pulled back in time. And this time around, he is determined that not only will all of his companions survive their adventure, but his dear nephew Frodo will never ever set eyes on a certain ring.

Everybody lives, nobody dies, Bilbo is a badass, and his dwarves love him more than life itself. Especially their King!

I started and finished reading this fic on the same day. I literally couldn’t stop reading it. I was awake until 4am because my brain wouldn’t shut up and let me sleep until I finished it. It was that good.

The dwarves and Bilbo were just one big happy family it was so cuuuute!!! 😭 Seriously Silver_pup put SO much love into every single character. It was so well done. This right here is a fic for the bookmarks!!!

I read this fic yesterday, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since.

Now, I love mutual pining. It's easily one of my favorite Ao3 tags. But, there is something about Bagginshield mutual pining that just hits different. And, I eat it up every time.

If you're looking for a second chance, ten years later Bagginshield fic with a happy ending, you've got to give this one a try. Its got a soft Thorin (my favorite) and hobbits visiting Erebor. It had me crying actual real tears and warmed my heart at the same time.

King Bard of Dale had entered as he often did, with very little pomp and a friendly smile. Here I am with a new hyper fixation in FF! I recently rewatched both the LOTR and The Hobbit trilogies and I finally finished Rings of Power. Goggle translate’s a bitch.

So there’s this fanfiction right. Amazing fanfic. I’d hug the author if I could.

[It honestly surprised me how much I enjoyed the fic when it’s an oc isakai into lord of the rings, but it was epic and I’d recommend it highly]

And there’s the scene towards the beginning where the elves ask the main character what her name is. And she panics contemplates what to tell them since apparently her name sounds like the khuzdul word for vagina, so she gives them her middle school username instead.

But I was curious. What was her original name? So I looked up khuzdal, and apparently Tolkien based the language on Hebrew. So I thought, I’ll just go look up how to say vagina in Hebrew on google translate and I’ll have a vague idea what it was!!

Brilliant. Except.

Google translate’s a bitch.

Tolkien Webcomic Recommendations!

I know people here follow me for my webcomic adaptation of the Hobbit. So I thought I’d share recommendations for my favorite similar Tolkien comic projects, in case people are looking for other Tolkien webcomics to read! :D

My recs will be mainly Tolkien comics that adapt portions of the original books, just with their own unique spin on them.

1. Sam and Frodo Comics, by Molly Knox Ostertag

Ostertag is probably the most well known artist on this list! She is a professional graphic novel artist who does gorgeous adaptations of scenes from Lord of the Rings, read through a queer lens, in order to tell the story of Frodo and Sam’s love for each other. This is mixed in with comics based on her own Tolkien-inspired writing. I’m focusing on comics in this rec list, but I’ll add that Ostertag has also written a lot of engaging prose fanfic with illustrations.

2.Lord of the Rings Book Canon Comics, by @yambits

Yambits does beautiful adaptations of scenes from the original lord of the rings books that do not appear in the New Line Cinema films, hewing very close to the original prose, and focusing on the love between Frodo and Sam. I especially love the way they depict the magical temptation of the Ring.

“The Tower,” an adaptation of Sam journeying to the tower of Cirith Ungol to rescue Frodo

The Ringbearers, a comic about the One Ring reflecting on the resilience of hobbits

3. Sansukh the Webcomic, by @fishfingersandscarves and @determamfidd

Sansukh is a well-loved Bagginshield fanfiction that is now getting a webcomic adaptation co-created by the original author. The premise is that after his death, Thorin Oakenshield is not able to speak to his surviving loved ones, but can influence them in subtle ways; he uses this power to help inspire Gimli to join the Fellowship of the Ring and protect Bilbo’s nephew. From there the fic becomes an “adaptation” of Lord of the Rings, retelling the trilogy through its new lens until the very end.

This is a bit of an outlier on this list because it’s an adaptation of a fanfic that’s an adaptation of the books, rather than an adaptation of the book. However, if you’re into the Hobbit fandom/Bagginshield, I recommend checking it out! It’s also one of the few comics on this list that is currently updating. :)

4. The Ainulindalae from the Silmarillion, by Evan Palmer Comics

People who know me, know that I’m *usually* not a big Silmarillion person. However!

Comic artist Evan Palmer did a gorgeous adaptation of the Ainulindale. This section of the Silmarillion describes the elven myth of creation, the ancient years where the world was created through a divine magical song. Palmer’s Fantasia-inspired expressive watercolor art really helps bring this section of the story to life!

5.The 1989 Hobbit Comic adaptation, by Chuck Dixon and David T Wenzel

This is another outlier because it’s a physical comic book, rather than a webcomic- and unlike all the other recs this is an “official” adaptation produced by an actual publishing company rather than a zero-budget work made by an indie creator working alone/with a partner. I’m unsure if it can be found online.

It’s an adaptation of the Hobbit that hews extremely close to the original book, making practically no changes at all. It has very gorgeous watercolor illustrations! ( It’s been a big inspiration for me on my own little comic adaptation of the hobbit shsjd.) This is also the only comic on the list I’ll offer critique of, because it’s the only one made by an actual company with a budget— so I’ll say that because of page limits imposed on the comic many of the pages can feel overcrowded with prose, and emotional beats/comedy beats sometimes aren’t given the time to properly land. At times it feels less like a comic adaptation and more like reading the original prose of the Hobbit accompanied by some very beautiful illustrations. But if that’s what you’re into it’s great!

It’s a fun well-illustrated read that I recommend. I’m not sure where people can find copies; I stumbled across it in my library, so they’re definitely still around.

So, I hear it's Fanfic Writers' Appreciation Day, and as someone who has enjoyed a LOT of Bagginshield fanfiction this year, I thought it would be nice to share some recommendations!

These are just a few of my personal favourites, feel free to share your own!

If I could Give My Breath Away (I Would) by StupidFatPenguin

Thorin loses his memory and quite forgets that the hobbit by his bedside whom he wishes to court and marry is already his husband. Everyone else find this hilarious.

Safe and Distant by Lindzzz

Bilbo never bothers denying that he is a slight, little bit, probably infatuated with Thorin. It’s not something that bothers him. Really. He’s pretty sure that everyone very likely has a little flutter in their chest for the dwarf. He’s something grand and unattainable. And it’s really much safer if it stays that way.

Travelling Songs to Fall In Love To by galehautstomb

When Thorin started to sing, Bilbo had to sit down. It was all he could do not to put his head in his hands. He knew at that moment, that he would be going on this journey, but he was not brave enough yet to voice it.

Unspoken Choice by snarkymonkey

In the wake of war and all else, Bilbo decides he needs to do something for Thorin that isn't related to dragons or gold or anything else. Nothing simpler than the offer of a trim, right?

There are many trials for a hobbit attempting to make a life among dwarves. A hobbit wants a garden. A hobbit wants to eat regular meals. A hobbit wants friends, good books, and comfortable chairs. Bilbo does his best to carve out a little hobbit life for himself in the mountain. If only there were not one final obstacle. For a hobbit heart wants love, and among dwarves that is a sticky subject.

Thorin marries Bilbo after the Battle of Five Armies, a marriage of convenience, not love. Slowly, they must come to make the best of it, Bilbo resolves. After all, he's a Hobbit. They make the best of things.

However, trapped by a cave-in while exploring the lower halls, Thorin and Bilbo are suddenly, and unavoidably thrown together and slowly they begin to sort things out.

Hello everyone!

I have a huge collection of LotR fanfiction that I love to read and revisit. For @tolkiengenweek, I compiled a couple fics from that collection as per the day-wise prompts. The Divine Comedy

The Wings + Whatever you can find of Crow's Eye View - Yi Sang

Faust - Goethe

Don Quixote - Miguel de Cervantes

Hell Screen - Ryūnosuke Akutagawa

This one is the shortest out of all the stories, and the one I'd recommend the most due to how much it has changed mine and other people's views on the character based on it. I'd also recommend looking into other works by the author.

The Stranger - Albert Camus

Dream of the Red Chamber - Cao Xueqin

This one is 2,500 pages in English(For reference, I went through my books to try and equal that with as little books as possible- That's approximately equal to The Lord of the Rings[minus the Hobbit] by J.R.R Tolkien, unabridged Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, and the entirety of Narnia by C.S. Lewis). Only read it if you want to.

Wuthering Heights - Emily Brontë

This one is particularly intense in that Heathcliff is a terrible awful person. You will not like him, from what I understand of the book.

Moby Dick - Herman Melville

Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoevsky

I've heard people recommend skipping this one as well due to how tiresome the prose can be. That's your choice, however.

Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth - Hermann Hesse

The Odyssey - Homer

The Metamorphosis - Franz Kafka

The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

This one is a children's book and isn't particularly important at first, however reading it will give some fun context to later parts. It's also referenced in Lobotomy Corporation!

holy shit thanks! i am definitely going to put all of these on my reading list. hopefully they'll all fill the void now that i've run out of fun fanfiction to read.

Ello, ello, ello!

I’m late (fashionably) to the party, but…

I’ll start off by saying how awful I am at tagging my moots when it comes to ask games, but know that I love all of you. Please never hesitate to pop into my inbox anytime for a chat. 💚

For everyone who has become invested in my Good Omens fanfiction, thank you for your patience. I promise I am working on chapter two. I’ve only recently returned to my normal work schedule. I have been getting overtime since October.

1. Were you named after anyone?

🪐 Not that I’m aware of, and hardly anyone calls me by my actual name. It’s usually either Ginger, Khasper the Spicy Ghost (affectionate) or Pippin.

2. When was the last time you cried?

🪐 I don’t exactly remember, but maybe a month ago. I miss my girl. My dog. She lost her battle with arthritis at 13.5 years old. The anniversary of her death is coming up in February. I can’t believe it’s almost been a year.

3. Do you have kids?

🪐 I don’t, but my best friend has two wonderful sons, and I see them as my own. If I actually had a child, just picture Louise from Bob’s Burgers.

4. What sports do you play or have you played?

🪐 I currently don’t play sports, but I used to partake in tennis, badminton, wall ball, basketball, volleyball and gymnastics.

5. Do you use sarcasm?

🪐 Not really, but it does also depend on if something is said that warrants the use of sarcasm.

6. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

🪐 Personality. I am good at reading people. I may not always talk. I observe. I’m neutral on most everything, but — well, if someone has a bad personality or is mean to animals, that’s a no go for me.

7. What color are your eyes?

🪐 Nothing fancy. Green.

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

🪐 I am the spooky connoisseur.

9. Do you have any talents?

🪐 I suppose if reading books, writing fanfiction and reading people count as talents.

10. Where were you born?

🪐 I am a born and raised Florida bean.

11. What are your hobbies?

🪐 Writing, drawing, stand up paddle boarding and listening to true crime podcasts. I can recommend a good one if that’s anyone’s thing.

12. Do you have any pets?

🪐 Thing One Mycroft and Thing Two Patch

13. How tall are you?

🪐 So tall. I’m 5’5’’.

14. What is or was your favorite subject in school?

🪐 It was history and science.

15. What is your dream job?

🪐 The one I have now. I am a kennel technician responsible for the care of police and military canines.
