Tree Tradition

Pairing: Carter Baizen X Reader

Prompt: This if for day TWO of @the-ss-horniest-book-club’s HFTH challenge: Getting the tree/decorations.

A/N: just a quick drabble. Blink and you’ll miss it.

Carter still hired out a lot of things to be done but there was one thing you insisted you do yourselves every year: cut down your own tree. He gave you a hard time about it the first year, but now he looks forward to it. Of course he couldn’t leave it at just getting a tree. Oh no. It had to be a whole weekend getaway now.

The two of you would drive the four hours out of the city to a beautiful tree farm in New Hampshire, spend the weekend in a gorgeous B & B just down the road relaxing and enjoying time away with your phones locked away. He always made sure you had a few hours to yourself with the giant bathtub, a bottle of champagne, and a box of your favorite macarons.

Finally Sunday would arrive and the two of you would wake early to head towards the farm. There you took a horse drawn carriage through the property and were dropped off at the tree lot. There you walked hand in hand down the rows of trees nitpicking each tree until you found the perfect one.

Carter pulled out the saw provided by the farm and knelt down to start sawing away at the trunk of the tree. As it started to lean you ran to the other side to assist him while he sped up his back and forth movement. Once the tree was free he hoisted it —a chipmunk scurrying out and hopping into a neighboring tree— and carried it back to the carriage to be brought to the front of the farm to be wrapped and strapped to the top of the car for the trip home.

a/n: it’s day two!! i hope your december is going lovely so far and i hope you enjoy day 2 of my headcanon advent calendar with carter “deserved better” baizen. xx

new york looked more inviting than a christmas hallmark movie could make it look.

there was snow on the ground and christmas decorations everywhere you looked. it was the picture perfect winter wonderland and for the very first time carter was spending it at his penthouse in the upper east side instead of some golden sand beach in the caribbean

it was the very first year he had someone to spent it with, someone who was worth going through the new yorker snow storms and the sea of tourists which flocked to see the famous rockefeller tree and ice skating rink

y/n wasn’t part of the upper east and in all honesty she didn’t care much about it or the constant gossiping that shrouded the area. she had met carter at an nyu charity ball after uncerimoniously falling in front of him due to the oversized dress she had managed to find last minute in the macy’s discount rack

he didn’t dare laugh, instead bending over to his knees to help her out only to get starstruck the moment her eyes looking into his. so when she asked if he could stay in new york with her through the holidays he couldn’t say no.

y/n was still busy with her end of term exams, mostly coming out of his office which he had given to her so she could have some peace and quiet to grab some gingerbread cookies he had bought from the pastry shop.

the day of her last exam arrived fast and carter had a nice day planned for her

with all the revising and constant running in and out of university, she had barely had time to enjoy the beginning of december and as such, carter had refused to put out any decorations until she was free to have fun.

once she left in the morning, carter got to work. he had hired several decorators to make the penthouse looks like it was out of a pinterest board

carter had even tried to bake some cookies only to fantastically fail at that and so bakery cookies had to do

his eyes were glued to the clock, waiting for her to come back and sure enough, around 2 o’clock he heard the jiggling of her keys followed by the door being open

“oh my god” she dropped her bag to the floor. carter watched in awe as she stepped in looking at every light, every bauble and the giant christmas tree in the middle of the living room

“do you like it, dove?” “you did this?” “i wanted to do something nice. i know exams have been a pain” “i cannot believe this” “are you happy?” “carter, you’re amazing” “i know and you’re gonna think i’m even greater once you see what i got you to watch this night” “how the grinch stole christmas?” “no, dove. i got you the worse thing ever put to screen which for whatever reason you seem to like so much” “YOU GOT THE STAR WARS CHRISTMAS SPECIAL”

the rest of the day was also somehow straight of the hallmark movie with her dragging him out the house to go see the rockerfeller tree followed by some hot chocolate and caramelised nuts

carter loved hot christmas but as he looked to his left, to the girl standing next to him in a knitted hat and scarf holding his gloved hand, he realised he didn’t need warm christmas in golden beaches. she was warm enough to melt through the cold of new york and she was who he’d want to spend christmas with for as long as he could.

Steve Kemp will cut off something to sell. Don’t trust him. Bucky is going to be all fuzzy and warm and take care of you so well. Beck is a doctor, he’s going to have the best care. Carter though I feel is going to spoil you, make sure you’re hydrated and you’ll wake up with new earrings for being such a good girl. Steve… 🤭 he makes me blush. I don’t want him to see me vulnerable. Jake is going to pet you the rest of the day. Ransom will want to snuggle and lay in the bed all day. Frank has had a few too many to drink too. You’ll be well hydrated and have all the medicine to make sure your hangover is kept at bay. So a lot is what kind of care do you want? Snuggles sound nice. But so does being rewarded. But there’s an actual doctor there!

The lobby looked strikingly bare without the Christmas decorations that had previously been up. Y/N always adored Christmas, and since this had been her first one at the hotel, it had exceeded her expectations. She’d been praised for her gingerbread masterpiece, but she hadn’t been able to take all the credit. Parker and Carter Baizen themselves had both helped, and played an important role ensuring she finished the piece on time.

Her Christmas had been spent at home. Unsurprisingly, she’d been tasked with cooking dinner for everyone, but that was the last thing she wanted to do. Just once she’d wanted her family to pull their heads out of their own asses and give her a night off from cooking, but she knew that was too much to ask for.

She couldn’t understand why they always insisted on eating turkey, which was the driest meat she’d ever eaten. Or why they insisted on making it last for three days afterwards. Regardless, when she left at 2pm with instructions on what to do when the food was ready, her family were annoyed she chose work over them.

To her, it was a no-brainer. She was their daughter, sister, grand-daughter, and niece. They treated her like a personal chef, and they didn’t even pay her for it. At least if she went into work she was appreciated, praised, and paid. Why would she stay at home and be told how she should be braising the turkey when she could be respected at work? At least her colleagues valued her input, rather than undermining her career like her family did.

That was why she chose work.

Before she’d left on Christmas Eve, after the dinner rush and cleaning up the kitchen, she’d slipped Sally – the Baizen’s personal maid – a present to leave for Parker in their suite. It was his own apron and chef’s jacket, and a card that said all he had to do next time he wanted to assist her in the kitchen was make sure someone called her first. During rushes, the kitchen was no place for a small five year old. Y/N wanted him to have room to create, but also in an environment that she wasn’t stressing about his well being 24/7.

It wasn’t until she removed the gingerbread masterpiece from the restaurant that Parker stopped by. He’d apparently been upstate with his mother for the holiday, so he hadn’t got Y/N’s present until he got home to his father on the 28th. By that time, she was just getting into work for lunch, and both Baizen men made an appearance in the kitchen.

“Miss Y/N!” Parker squealed, drawing her attention away for a minute. She turned and smiled at the youngster who raced towards her in full speed, wearing his chef jacket and apron. “I can bake with you more now!”

“You like your present?” She asked him, crouching to his level so he could hug her. “My sous chef has got to have his own apron and jacket, doesn’t he?”

“Yes! I love it! I love you!” He told her.

That pulled at her heart strings. “Aw, I’m glad you love them, Parker,” she told him, leaning in to whisper in his ear. “I love you too.”

He beamed at her and looked up at his father. “Daddy said we bake more sometime? When?”

“How about we make some cupcakes for the New Year, hm?” She asked. “We can spend the afternoon on the 30th decorating, if you’re up to helping me and your dad says it’s okay, of course.”

“It’s okay,” Parker assured her.

Carter gave a soft chuckle. “It’s fine. What time should I bring him down?”

“Just after two works for me,” she told him, rising to her feet again. Parker slipped his hand into hers and she smiled down at him. “You’re welcome to join us too, Carter. We’ve got to bake enough cupcakes for everyone in the hotel, and then some. I think it’s going to require an extra pair of hands.”

Truth was, they did have a lot of cupcakes to decorate, but the staff were all helping out anyway. Y/N was planning on making a batch from scratch so the father and son duo could take them back to their suite. She knew Carter had a party planned, because she had agreed to cater it. Providing exceptional nibbles for his guests, as well as being able to join in on the festivities.

Carter smiled softly at the two. He liked seeing them interact. Y/N was sweet to his kid and she didn’t have to be, and apparently she’d left quite a mark on Parker. While he was away with his mother, he hadn’t stopped talking about the gingerbread masterpiece they’d decorated together for Christmas at the hotel. His mother had been quite put out that this new woman had been spending time with her son. It was only after Carter explained that she was a chef in the hotel’s kitchen and Parker had tracked her down that his mother settled a little. He never got involved with his staff. She didn’t have to feel jealous at all.

But it didn’t sit well with Carter, that Y/N was just a chef who worked for him. He liked her even though he barely knew her. He wanted to get to know her better, he just wasn’t sure how to go about that.

“I’ll keep my afternoon free,” Carter assured her with a smile. “C’mon, Parker. We’ve got a busy afternoon ahead of us.”

“We’re building a fort!” Parker excitedly told Y/N. She smiled at him. “And watching Santa Clause. It’s Daddy’s favourite!”

“Sounds like you better get to building your fort!” Y/N told him. “You gotta make sure it’s comfortable before you watch a movie.”

Parker nodded firmly, taking her opinion on board. “You hear that, daddy? It’s inpordent.”

“We better go then, Park,” Carter said. “Can you say ‘thank you’ to Y/N again for her gifts?”

“Thank you so much, Miss Y/N!”

“You’re very welcome, angel,” she assured him with a fond ruffle of his hair. “Enjoy your afternoon with your dad, hm? Make sure he lets you hold the popcorn or he’ll eat it all.”

Parker gasped. “Of course!”

Y/N shot Carter a wink before Parker ran off. “I’ll bring up a cart in a bit. You want marshmallows with your hot chocolates?”

“Yeah,” he said, a light dusting of pink to his cheeks. Her wink had affected him more than he cared to admit. “Thank you again. For Parker’s gift.”

“Don’t worry about it,” she assured him. “And I meant what I wrote in the card. He’s welcome here whenever he likes. I’m happy to bake with him.”

“I know he really appreciates it,” Carter assured her. “If he ever gets in the way down here, we have a kitchen in our suite that’s rarely used. Could be a bit easier...safer. I know how hectic it can get in here sometimes.”

“After we frost these cupcakes I’m more than happy to bake with Parker upstairs,” she assured him. “Just let me know when master summons me and I’ll appear.”

Carter laughed heartily. Eyes screwed shut and head slightly thrown back. She really liked knowing she caused that kind of reaction and she wanted to see more of it.

“I’ll get started on your cart. You should head up and help Parker set up the fort before your hot chocolates get cold.”

Carter’s eyes twinkled as he looked at her. “We couldn’t have that,” he said. “Thank you again.”

“Of course.”

As Y/N turned around to wash her hands, her coworker Liam, gave her a look. “Oh, girl, you’ve got it bad for the boss, haven’t you?”

Y/N sighed. She sure did.

Y/N got through cupcake decorating without a hitch. Parker mixed the batter, and Carter spooned it into the moulds. They spent time laughing as they made the frosting, waiting for the cupcakes to cook and cool down before they could decorate them, and Parker made sure everyone else’s decorating was going well. He pulled his stool up next to Liam, who was making intricately designed firework cupcakes, and watched with curious eyes.

When theirs were ready, Y/N let the boys go wild while she finished a couple for the rest of the hotel’s guests. Carter’s and Parker’s were their own to take home, and she made sure they knew that from the get-go. Parker had been super excited to get started, and Carter periodically thanked Y/N from her time and dedication. He knew tomorrow she’d be super busy with preparing for his party, and she was supposed to have the afternoon off instead of helping them bake their own. He made sure she knew it was appreciated, and that it wouldn’t go unnoticed. He’d already made the call to accounting to give her a hefty Christmas bonus, but he wanted to up her salary, too. She was going above and beyond what her job called for, so he made sure to compensate her properly.

It was all go in the Baizen’s suite. Y/N was busy in the kitchen, whipping up some hor d’oeuvres for the guests set to arrive after 9pm. She’d eaten a late lunch, which could technically also be classed as an early dinner, and now she was busy whipping up a storm. Ready to cater to the upper class guests Carter had told her were coming, with the help of Sarah in the kitchen, and a few other staff as the waiters.

Rumour has it that the view from Carter’s penthouse was the best in the city, and would give them the best place to watch the fireworks from. Sarah had been taking up a storm about last year’s New Year’s Eve party, which she’d helped the last chef cater. Y/N was excited to see the fireworks she talked so highly about.

The evening was a lot more relaxed than Y/N thought it would be. She appreciated the relaxed vibe, and even allowed herself out to mingle with a few of the guests who wanted to meet the chef. Apparently the one last year had been wooed by a job offer of one of Carter’s friends, and a couple of people even offered to double what he was paying to become their personal chef. But she was happy at the hotel. She was loyal to the Baizens, and Carter had overheard that last comment in passing. Backtracking to shoo away Patrick, who apparently was a vulture, just so he could thank Y/N.

“I’ve told you before, it’s fine,” Y/N assured him.

“Loyal to the Baizens isn’t in your job description,” he quipped easily. “That’s why I’m thanking you this time. You already know how much I appreciate you helping me out tonight.”

Y/N laughed softly. “Honestly, Carter, there’s nobody else I’d rather work for. If there was, I’d be there. I know my worth, Mr. Baizen. You have nothing to worry about.”

“Why am I ‘Mr. Baizen’ now?”

“Because you’re my boss and this is a professional setting. If I was to call you ‘Carter’ up here...I’d need to change. It’s different when you’re on my turf,” she replied simply and he nodded, accepting it, even if he didn’t like how formal it was. “You have an amazing view of the city from up here.”

“It’s the one thing I loved growing up. Watching the sun go down over the Manhattan skyline,” he responded. “Sunsets are the one thing that doesn’t change no matter where you are in the world. No matter what hotel you’re temporarily calling home. They’re always beautiful.”

“I hear the view of the fireworks is spectacular,” Y/N mused. “You mind if I watch them with you?”

“Not at all.”

He smiled sweetly, but he felt like his heart would beat out of his chest. She beamed back at him and he wasn’t sure how he was still standing. He knew it would be unprofessional to kiss her at midnight, but it was a standing tradition. Maybe that’s what she was insinuating. Maybe she wanted to kiss him. God, his head was spinning.

After their afternoon decorating cupcakes together, Carter had called Parker’s mom. He knew she was still salty about a potential new woman in her son’s life, and he was about to make it worse by confessing that he might have a small crush on her. He didn’t know what to do, or who to call, and he knew that after she stopped being pissed, she’d actually offer some decent advice.

Her advice had been simple. Let her attempt to make the first move. Their dynamic obviously made it hard to decipher actual intentions, considering she could just be kind to Parker because Carter was the boss and she wanted to stay in his good books. But he had to look for any signs she wanted to spend more time with him. Inviting him to decorate cupcakes with her and Parker had been his first clue, before he even knew to look for them.

And now here she was asking to watch the fireworks with him. He hoped like hell he wasn’t reading the signs wrong, because that could be a potential harassment case on his hands if he wasn’t careful. He was her boss. His ex understood his hesitancy to make a move, which was why she urged him to let her make it instead. He just hoped she was bold enough to cross that line. After the professional situation bullshit she’d thrown in his face earlier, he wasn’t too sure anymore.

Y/N wanted to kiss him. My God, did she ever. She knew she could possibly lose her job over it, but it was a calculated risk she was willing to make.

The chatted idly as they waited for time to pass. Waiting desperately for the countdown to start and the fireworks to light up the sky. Y/N built up the nerve to actually kiss him at midnight, wringing her hands together to find 20 seconds of courage.

It didn’t have to mean anything, right? It could just be a kiss that came from tradition. Right?

Liam was right. She had it bad for the boss. And it didn’t help that the countdown had started. She only had 8 seconds to decide if she was willing to risk it all.

Fuck it. She was doing it. It just so happened she jumped the gun, and kissed him before the countdown hit one.

Carter didn’t let her pull away. Kissing her back the moment their lips met and cupping the base of her skull with his hand. The other on her waist. Hers gripping his tie, having to pull him down a little so she could reach his mouth.

Humming against her lips as the pop of fireworks sounded in the distance and cheering erupted from the living room. They parted with shy smiles, and Y/N let her gaze wander to the light show in the sky.

“Wow,” she said breathlessly, turning to look back at him. “That’s a visual representation of what it’s like kissing you. Beautiful.”

He kissed her once again, and they both knew that was the start of something truly beautiful. The New Year looked promising, in more ways than one.

The Spirit of Christmas Giving:

Summary: Spending Christmas at Carter Baizen’s house.

Pairing: Carter Baizen x Reader

Warning: None, just fluff!

It was Christmas Eve, and the night was winding down to a close at the Baizen’s house. Over by the tree, you were all seated and smiling, you and Carter sitting close and comfortable on the couch by the open fire while Nate and Serena were cuddled into each other as they sat near the tree.

"Okay, alright, it's gift exchanging time. I've held onto my gifts long enough." Serena said, smiling enthusiastically as she held 4 bags in her hands, all of them rather large with smaller bags inside. "Who's first?" she then asked, looking around.

Carter lightly raised his hand and smiled lightly, going to get his gifts from under the tree. You smiled brightly as the group of you lightly clapped and cheered. You held a cup of spiked eggnog in your hand, sipping it as Carter started to speak.

"Alright guys, so the holidays finally came around, and it was kind of difficult to find gifts that you'd all like since all of our personalities are different, but I really hope you guys like your gifts. I love you all and I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and please, show up to my New Years Party so we can all enter 2019 drunk off our asses and smiling like idiots." Carter said, chuckling as he raised his glass in Christmas cheer.

"To Christmas Giving!" Carter exclaimed, smiling as the rest of the group raised their glasses in cheer.

"To Christmas Giving." Serena and Nate said in unison with you, smiling and sipping their drinks. Carter smiled brightly and nodded, chuckling.

"Alright, alright, let's hand out these gifts now, shall we? Y/N, babe, I love you so much, and this is for you." Carter said, handing you a pretty good sized bag, with small bags within it. You smiled brightly and went up to Carter, kissing him lovingly.

"Thank you, Carter, I love you so much more. Merry Christmas babe," you said to him, happily exchanging gifts as you handed him his gift, which resided under the tree. You smiled brightly and started to quickly take out the gifts, trying to figure out what was in each bag.

"Hurry up, I wanna see the first gift!" Serena encouraged, smiling brightly as Carter nodded.

"Go ahead babe," he said, pulling you in. You smiled and opened up the first gift, which was a beautiful forever rose encased in a glass done, certification and authentication certificates within the glass dome. You smiled brightly and looked at Carter with wide eyes.

"Carter--it's--it's beautiful!" you exclaimed, kissing him lovingly and smiling brightly, staring at the rose. "Is it real?" you questioned.

Carter smiled and nodded.

"Real and hand-dipped, beautiful. I wanted to get you something that would last as long as my love for you would..." Carter said lovingly, looking at you with love in his eyes.

You smiled and kissed him lovingly once more, before setting the Forever Rose down gently on the coffee table in front of you, admiring it as you continued to open your other gifts. Continuing to open the next two gifts, you smiled at one small but long velvet box and another square shaped box, and looked at Serena, before looking down at the boxes again and opening them.

Upon opening them, the boxes revealed a $40,000 Cartier rose-gold necklace with diamond accent-stones encrusted on it, and two Angara Pear Morganite rings worth $3,000 each, encrusted with diamonds and rose-gold accents around them both. Your eyes went wide at the jewelry in front of you and you were speechless, looking at Carter and quickly trying the jewelry on, it all fitting perfectly and beautifully complimenting your skin tone.

You looked at Carter with a loss for words, but Carter simply nudged his head and encouraged you to continue opening the gifts. You nodded and blushed hard, smiling brightly and digging deep in the bag to find two cute sweaters which were soft and warm, along with a beautiful Christmas ornament engraved with his name and your own.

You gently shook the bag and heard a jingling attached to a card, and furrowed your brows, grabbing the card and flipping it over, finding a pair of brass keys attached to the card. You stared down at the card and then looked at Carter.

"Babe...babe, what is this?..." you mumbled, caught in shock. Serena’s eyes went wide and she held Nate’s hand, staring at the keys. Carter smiled and took your hand and kissed it.

"Y/N, I love you so much. And I want you to know that...that's a key to my summer house. I want to take you there someday and spend a summer with you, and only you, if you'll let me." Carter said softly, smiling at you with his light blue eyes.

You smiled and nodded happily, kissing his lips deeply.

"Yes, yes, I'd love to go with you, of course, I would!" you exclaimed, smiling brightly and laughing in content. Carter smiled brightly and nodded, kissing your hands in joy. You smiled and admired all your gifts, feeling truly loved for the Christmas season.

Nate and Serena smiled, Nate patting Carter on the shoulder.

"Nice going man. Proud of you," Nate said, handing Carter his gifts. "Now it's your turn! Open up." Nate encouraged, gripping Carter happily by the shoulders and gently shaking him.

Carter smiled brightly and nodded, taking his gifts as Serena quickly got up to join you, wanting to admire your jewelry as well.

"Carter, they're so beautiful!" Serena said, nodding and smiling as Carter pulled out his first gift.

"Whoa, beautiful, what is this? It's huge!" Carter said with a bright smile, laughing and sitting down beside you to open up his gifts. As he pulled out the first gift, it was large and heavily wrapped.

"Unwrap, unwrap!" you said happily, excited for your gift to Carter and hoping he would greatly appreciate it. As Carter unwrapped his gift, he laughed out loud in pure happiness and excitement.

"No way!! Is this--is this for real babe?!" Carter exclaimed, unwrapping a Korg Pa300 61-Key Professional Arranger keyboard, mount and even some music sheets on hand.

"Babe, oh my god! I love it--I love you!!! This is amazing--how much was this?!" Carter exclaimed, clearly excited.

You blushed and shook your head.

"It doesn't matter, as long as you love it," you said, smiling.

You had saved up a lot for it, but you weren’t going to tell him that.

Carter laughed and nodded, playing a little song before excitedly putting down the key arranger and digging back into his other gifts.

"That was--that was the best gift I've ever gotten--Is this jewelry, no fucking way," Carter said, opening the leather box to reveal two solid black rings, which Carter was quick to put on.

You smiled and laughed, Carter, pulling you in and kissing you lovingly.

"I love the gifts and I love you, thank you so much, Y/N!" Carter said, picking up the sleek new keyboard and excited to use it. You smiled and kissed him back before he pulled away, holding your Forever Rose in your lap and staring at it in awe and beauty, looking around at the family you gained in your friends, and the soulmate you'd found in your boyfriend, Carter."I'm lucky to have you, Y/N." Carter then said, holding you close as he lightly pressed keys on his arranger. You smiled and leaned against him, holding his hand. "I love you more, Carter Baizen. I love you more," you said, sipping your eggnog and listening as the convivial conversation continued amongst you and your friends under the warm holiday cheer.
