Shining a light on the origins of bioluminescence ✨✨
A new study led by MBARI collaborators at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History explores the evolution of bioluminescence, nature’s living light show. A team of researchers, including MBARI Senior Scientist Steven Haddock, has learned bioluminescence first evolved in animals at least 540 million years ago in soft corals.
Scientists have long been curious about the evolution of bioluminescence. To tackle the larger question of why bioluminescence evolved, we needed to know when this ability first appeared in animals. In search of the trait’s earliest origins, the team decided to peer back into the evolutionary history of octocorals, an ancient and frequently bioluminescent group of animals that includes soft corals, sea fans, and sea pens.
Mapping out the branches of the evolutionary tree from fossil records, genetics, and bioluminescent behaviors revealed that some 540 million years ago, the common ancestor of all octocorals was very likely bioluminescent. That is 273 million years earlier than the glowing ostracod crustaceans that previously held the title of earliest evolution of bioluminescence in animals.
MBARI’s Biodiversity and Biooptics Team is working to understand how and why animals produce their stunning luminescence. Learn more about this illuminating research on our website.

i think a lions mane jellyfish would be cool! if youd like to continue to be cursed, id love to see what youd for a sea urchin or starfish mermaid 🧜‍♀️
If science of specbio intrigues you, please follow my worldbuilding blog at @worldofvonder
So mermaids are fish, straight up. Anything non-fish is not a mermaid. I do take non-fish requests! But they will either be magical creatures that are not mermaids, or they will just not be canon to my world.
There are many aquatic creatures that are not fish, and are in fact not even in the phylum chordata. "Phylum" is the first category of biology in taxonomy, which is the study of classifications.
Tumblr media
Source: major animal phyla (video lecture!)
The kingdoms of life are: animals, plants, and fungus. Within the animal kingdom, the next step of sorting is phyla. Chordata includes vertebrates (and other animals that have a spinal cord but no bones) and it does not include jellyfish, crustaceans, octopus, and lots of other things. Interestingly, it is believed that chordata and echinoderma share a common ancestor, but they are still different phyla.
Mermaids arose from a ray finned fish, in the clade Actinopterygii. They speciated from there to become the dominant life form of the oceans. Mermaids have a process that allows groups to take on a form that is analogous to a mundane fish. If that fish evolved to eat algae, the mermaid takes on those traits while still able to eat meat. This kinship is not limited to other ray-finned fish, but encompasses many vertebrates that are commonly called "fish." This includes sharks and jawless fish like hagfish. It can include lobe-finned fish like coelacanth, but does not include tetrapods. Tetrapod creatures that resemble mermaids may be centaurs. Centaurs have a completely different origin than mermaids.
Mermaids do not have kin in other phyla. If an invertebrate resembles a human, it is through another evolutionary path than "fish that mimics humans to eat them"
Aquatic creatures and their "mermaid" (humanoid) creature counterparts
Chordata: Fish (cartiligeous, ray finned, lobe finned): Mermaids Seals and sea lions: Selkies (selkies are a subspecies of human) Whales and dolphins: selkie-mermaid hybrids: mammalmers
Arthropoda (crustaceans, arachnids, insects): fairies Mollusca: (slugs, clams, octopus): Magic mirrors Echinoderma (sea cucumbers, starfish, urchins, sanddollars): undiscovered Cnidaria (jellyfish and anemones) and Ctenophora: undiscovered
sponges, anything resembling worms, anything not mentioned: undiscovered
Many phylums have branches that superficially resemble humans despite being completely unrelated to us and each other. This phenomenon is known as anthropisation (not anthropization, which is humans changing landscapes). But don't go thinking humans are special. The same thing happens with horses.
wow there's a lot here. You're welcome lol

i want to make you aware of the existence of olms (pictured above) and tell you some good facts about us!
They eat, sleep, and breed underwater. Feeding on crustaceans like shrimp, insects and snails. Olm are only found in underground cave systems in the Balkans and are Europe's only cave-adapted vertebrate, but despite being thought to live more than 100 years, they reproduce just once or twice per decade.
Olms reproduce by either laying eggs or giving birth to live young. Temperature appears to be the factor that determines which reproductive strategy is used, with colder water triggering the bearing of live young.
They are an entirely aquatic species that can survive without food for up to 10 years and can live for 58 years or more. The olm is not sexually mature until reaching around 12 years of age and reproduces very slowly.
A study published in Biology Letters estimated that they have a maximum lifespan of over 100 years and that the lifespan of an average adult is around 68.5 years. When compared to the longevity and body mass of other amphibians, olms are outliers, living longer than would be predicted from their size.
Predators of olms include fish, toads, and birds.
Olm are only found in underground cave systems in the Balkans and are Europe's only cave-adapted vertebrate.
They retain numerous larval traits, such as well-developed gills, a lateral line system, and tiny limbs. The olm grows to about 30 cm (12 inches) long and has a normally white (unpigmented) body, red gill plumes, a narrow head, and a blunt snout. Olms reproduce by either laying eggs or giving birth to live young.
"Oh wow, you learn something new everyday! I'd like to keep one as a pet Ha ha ha"
You can hear the sounds of the wall knocking
"Yes, I know, it won't survive a day here. But it's nice to imagine... I really like it when viewers come in with random facts, it's nice to learn"

oceanic whitetip? or perhaps, a chain catshark?
(i have done ocean white tip, but if u want more facts pls lmk 💗💗💗)
DYK…
Tumblr media
chain catshark can grow up to 59 cm long. they are shy and nocturnal and often hide in crevices. they spend their day resting at the bottom using the sandy bottom to camouflage its spotted back. at night, when they are active, chain catsharks feed on squid, bony fish, crustaceans and bristle worms.
chain catshark is a small, reticulated catshark that is biofluorescent. the species is common in the Northwest Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean. it is harmless and rarely encountered by humans. it has very similar reproductive traits to the small-spotted catshark.
chain catshark are considered mature when they have a fully developed nidamental gland or shell gland. this is marked by the glands growth to 1.8 cm (0.7 in) or more in width. sexual maturity in the female is seen at 52 centimeters (1.71 ft) in length under normal conditions.

PART 1 | POLL 4
SHRIMP TOURNAMENT!!!
(make sure to read info on both contenders before voting! some information may be hidden under "read more"!!)
BANDED CORAL SHRIMP (Stenopus hispidus)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AKA: coral banded shrimp, banded cleaner shrimp
technically, BCS aren't true shrimp, but we'll make an exception due to how closely related they are (wink). these big guys boast gigantic claws and red-white stripes covering their entire bodies! they're able to distinguish between individual banded coral shrimp (presumably through chemical signals), which is quite a rare trait for crustaceans! they're also monogamous and mate for life, a trait also quite uncommon for most crustaceans! if one partner dies, the other will never mate again and supposedly live the rest of its life solitary.
-
EMPEROR SHRIMP (Periclimenes imperator)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AKA: N/A
these colorful shrimp form commensal* relationships with nudibranch (most commonly "spanish dancers"), in which the latter protects the former from harm by being toxic to most other animals. depending on their size, however, emperor shrimp may choose to live on sea cucumbers instead, and they're actually quite dedicated to their choice- if a larger shrimp is moved from a nudibranch to a sea cucumber (and vice versa), they'll go out of their way to find their original partner again!
*where one organism benefits from another without hurting or helping it- although it's still debated on whether or not the other party benefits in this situation
-
reblog for more shrimp frying rice! this is part of an ongoing bracket tournament known as the Sas Shrimp Tournament, which will finally decide which shrimp is the absolute coolest of them all!

A recurring adaptation among limbed animals are the specialization of limbs away from their original purpose of locomotion: on HP-02017 most prominently the bipedalism of the jerryboas that would give rise to many biped clades, such as the walkabies, rhinocheirids, podotheres and pterodents, to name the most notable examples, their forelimbs no longer taking part in walking and instead finding other uses for grasping, fighting and even flying.
Yet this trait becomes even more evident in animals with more that four limbs, as is the case with many insects, crustaceans and other arthropods that have made unusual uses of their front legs, such as pincers and grabbing claws. And thus, while vertebrates are limited to a maximum of four legs, this effect has been most pronounced in the one clade that bypassed this anatomical constraint: the sixteen-pseudolimbed daggoths.
The barrelbacked rumptusk (Abyssoscrofa nychoceros) is a daggoth species related to a more basal group of the biblarodons, and is a relatively small species: being about five or six kilograms on average. While possessing sixteen pseudo-limbs, each in fact a very modified finger emerging from its "shoulders" and "hips" (actually its ankles and wrists), only six are used in walking: moving with a distinctive shuffling tripod gait that moves the front and hind legs of one side and the middle leg of the other at once, ensuring that a minimum of three legs are always on the ground at any given time, granting it good stability on the slippery rock floors of the cavern system.
The ten other digits, on the other hand, have found unusual new uses in this peculiar species. Like with many other daggoths, the first and last pairs have evolved into long feelers equipped with bristly sensory hairs to feel its way through the lightless caves. But the second and second-to-last pairs are far thicker and enlarged, and possess large upward-curved claws: which it uses to defend against its main predators, the carnivorous blindmutts, and also used by males when they compete over territory and mates. Armed both front and back, the claws function much like horns and tusks in fending off an enemy: with the advantage of actually being moveable and able to point in the direction of an attacker.
These small, stout creatures are omnivores, and indiscriminately eat whatever edible thing they can find: shroomors, meatmoss, mocklichens, fungi, bacterial mats, invertebrates and even smaller daggoths are all items on the rumptusks' menu. Its nasal tendrils are short, broad and flattened, allowing it to root about in the abyssal foliage in search of food, while its third pair of forelimb digits bear smaller, yet still enlarged claws that in contrary to its main claw-horns curve downwards, which it uses to dig for its favorite food: the swollen, rhizome-like mycelia of mocklichens, excavating it from the rocks and organic mulch that gathers at the floors of the caves.

Heyyy I dunno if you're open to receiving headcanons, but one of mine is that, had Georgie survived (or had Pennywise never gotten him in the first place), his talents/interests would be photography (hinted at in the book, with his photo album) and music (throw some of Sharon's influence in there). An alternative idea is marine biology- in the movie, he has a LEGO turtle, and while I know that this was probably just meant to be a reference to Maturin, I've seen some people in fandom make loving turtles a Georgie trait. Combine that with his love of boats, and boom, marine biology
My heart 😭😭😭
Georgie taking the losers club’s prom/senior pictures as the younger sibling always does. Complimenting Beverly and Beverly only on her dress.
Georgie and Ben listening to guilty pleasure music together and Georgie having to be polite and act like he loves the NKOTB medley mixtape Ben made for him.
Georgie and Stan bonding over aquatic birds like herons, ducks, and plovers.
The losers taking Georgie out to the coast of Maine and doing fun shore habitat games like finding different types of crustaceans.
Georgie and Bill building an actual little boat and testing it out in the quarry until it floats.

Round One: Ngwevu vs Kholumalumo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Factfiles:
Ngwevu ntoloko
Tumblr media
Artwork by @i-draws-dinosaurs, written by @i-draws-dinosaurs and @zygodactylus
Name meaning: Grey skull
Time: ~190 to 180 million years ago (Pliensbachian to Toarcian stages of the Early Jurassic)
Location: Clarens Formation, South Africa
Ngwevu is a dinosaur with a case of baby-face so bad it was classified as another genus for 40 years. Initially discovered in 1978 and thought to be a specimen of Massospondylus, turns out it was just a really baby-looking prosauropod of a different kind! Many times in evolution animals will retain “baby” characteristics into adulthood - the classic and easily recognizable trait being large, round eyes, but also other features such as stunted proportions and chunkier limbs, depending. It seems that Ngwevu went through one of these processes, looking more similar to juveniles of other prosauropods (such as Massospondylus) than adults, all while actually being adults themselves. Predictably, it had a squat face with large eyes, a wide snout, robust proportions, and a thick body - babified Massospondylus! It probably had a more generalist diet than its cousin, indicating probable niche partitioning as the two lived in the same environment. The Clarens Formation, coming right after the Elliot, was an arid desert dominated by dunes, with a few types of dinosaurs including ornithischians, theropods, and other sauropodomorphs. In addition, fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates are also known from this location.
Kholumolumo ellenbergerorum
Tumblr media
Artwork by @alphynix, written by @i-draws-dinosaurs
Name meaning: Kholumolumo (giant reptilian dragon from Sotho folklore) named for Paul and François Ellenberger (the original excavators of the fossils)
Time: 210 million years ago (Norian stage of the Late Triassic)
Location: Lower Elliot Formation, Lesotho
Kholumolumo is an old friend with a new name. Its previous informal name, “Thotobolosaurus” meaning “trash heap reptile”, was truly magnificent and became one of the great memes of Ye Olde 2010s Palaeo Tumblr! Needless to say it was a bittersweet moment to see our old buddy finally published but lose its iconic name in the process. Rest in peace, Trash Heap Lizard.
The reason it wound up with that name is because the fossils were in fact found basically right next to the local rubbish dump of the village of Maphutseng in 1955. The trash pile turned out to be sitting on a bone bed of around five to ten animals, and over the course of several years they were excavated and moved to the University of Cape Town. Unfortunately, and perhaps appropriately to the name, the subsequent study of these fossils ended up being a complete trash fire. Specimens went missing that have never been found, professional relationships fell apart, and the animal itself wasn’t mentioned in the literature until 1970 when it was dropped into a discussion on the stratigraphy of the Elliot formation and named “Thotobolosaurus mabeatae” without any description of the fossils. This made the name “Thotobolosaurus” a nomen nudum (naked name) and thus invalid.
Finally in 2020 all the tribulation paid off and it received a proper initial description, although many fossils that weren’t lost in the chaos still remain under study and could be the subject of future papers. It’s nice to see our beloved trash heap of a dinosaur finally coming into its own!

Episode 6 "Party Politics"
Timestamp: 00:37:18
Video Length: 4min. & 7sec.
Sumo Wrestling to talk to Ragh (Pt. 1 | ‣Pt. 2)
Gorgug yells for Riz
Riz joins in
Gorgug says he explained but Riz also explains it again in a maybe better kind of way for Ragh to try to understand.
Riz: "So there was a god that was going through some kind of- was having- anger was escaping through these red gems that were possessing people and filling them with rage. And then Kalina- who is back but we don't know what's going on because now that the Nightmare King is gone, Cassandra manifested Kalina again, I guess and Kalina seemed shady but also seemed to legitimately be helping Cassandra, so it's possible that she takes on the traits of whoever she's the familiar of. So she might be a good guy? I don't know what's going on. But she did say your name specifically, not in a threatening way, but in a 'he will save us' way, while she was getting taken over by one of the red gems that was very similar to what happened with your mom. So, I think you are the true crab king."
Gorgug bows! 😂🤣💀
Riz also bows 😂😂🤣🤣💀💀
Riz is confusedly just looking at Gorgug 😂😂😂
Gorgug: "We've just got to build him up a little bit." 😭😭
Ragh: "So you're telling me that in the same year that I gotta get ready for tryouts for the Bastion City Buccaneers, that I've been chosen to save Cassandra?"
Gorgug and Riz: "Maybe?" 😂🤣💀
Gorgug: "Does that mean something to you?" 😂
Ragh: "It means a lot." 😭😭
Ragh remembers Cassandra! He was there! 😂🤣💀
Ragh is gonna find Cassandra 😭
Ragh: "Listen, I'm a straight-up barbarian, but if you need cleric numero dos and I'm the chosen one- Let's talk." 😭😭
Riz: "I think it's something to do with those red rage spheres, that maybe you could help with, or maybe we can talk to your mom and also you, and maybe we can all figure it out together."
Ragh really struggles :(((
Brennan: "You see that- he[Ragh] loves you a lot and wants to say something that solves the mystery for you, but I think you watch him not get it."
Ragh has never seen a rage star per se
Lydia has a fiend trapped in the red gem that's inside of her and she uses her rage to contain it.
Lydia can make a sick spread on Saturday and they can talk to her about the star trapped in her chest!
Ragh texts his mom SO QUICK! 😭✋
Ragh's text to his mom: "Mom, sick spread. Crystal demon questions. Riz, Gorgug. You down?" 😂🤣💀
🥰🥰An enormous wall of the "surrounded by hearts smiling" emoji🥰🥰
Ragh's mom is the best! 😭✋ I admire the LOVE that Ragh has for his mom fr! 😭😭✋✋
Ragh assures Gorgug and Riz that they're gonna get to the bottom of this! 🥺🥺 He's so sweet! 🥺🥺♥️♥️
Crab King! 😂🤣👏👑
Ragh: "Crab King, when the lobster prince and the shrimp majordomo need help, then that's what's up."
Riz: "That's awesome. Thank you, Ragh."
Gorgug, Riz, and Ragh all put a hand in: "Crustacean Nation!" 😭😭✋✋

Sing Marine Life!
Tumblr media
I’ll deal with you at the end.
As promised, here’s the follow up post including the marine animals! We don’t see many in the film, so I’ve broken it down by each species.
Squid
Tumblr media
I love these guys. They don’t do much, but they look cool. The most notable thing about them is their bioluminescence, which is indeed a trait some real squid have, though not to this degree. Based off their size, bioluminescence, and spotted patterns, I believe these are firefly squid. The bioluminescence is very inaccurate in Sing, but it’s probably exaggerated for dramatic effect and it’s totally fair because the scenes they’re in look amazing. In real life, only the spots on the squid light up and they are only blue, I don’t believe they can change the colour.
Something worth pointing out is that the anatomy of the squid in Sing is completely wrong. And I mean royally messed up. Squid have a mouth that is more like a beak, no lips, certainly no teeth, and it’s located in the middle of the tentacles. The eyes are also further down the body, basically on the tentacles too. What Illumination has done is use the mantle as the squid’s face, when that’s actually their body. It’s the equivalent of putting Buster’s face on his torso. Soooooo something happened to the Sing squid to completely rearrange their bodies and essentially swap the locations of their head and body. Wild.
Shrimp
Tumblr media
This is fairly accurate because some crustaceans can survive on regular air for a short time and don’t need to be constantly submerged. Like the squid, these guys have been given a more mammalian body type and can even wear clothes. I don’t know the specific species of shrimp because my God, they all looked the same to me. There’s also this concept art crab who is just chilling about on land. He’d either be dead in a few hours or Sing crabs can now live on land. But I won’t explore it much as it’s not something that’s actually appeared in the films so it’s not canon.
Tumblr media
Whale
Tumblr media
He doesn’t appear very much, but he’s there. We don’t see enough of him to determine his species but he wears a neat hat. I have nothing else to say about him. Why is Buster in the sky
Fish
Tumblr media
Again, super brief appearance and oh my God this screenshot was so hard to get?! I had to load up the film and grab it myself because no one cares about these fish at all. It’s too blurry to tell what species they are, and again, not much to say on them.
Walrus
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I have beef with this walrus because his design interrupted the old, more realistic style of Sing. He really cemented the feeling to me that Sing 2 is no longer using the “rules” set by Sing 1. I remember first seeing him and thinking how odd and out of place he looked. While I thought he was a funny character, his design just bothered me so much, something about him felt so off. The sheer audacity of this man to walk on two feet and basically look like a big ape. Generally, Sing was quite realistic with its body types. Ok except the squids. Although technically four legged, walruses and seals have flippers and such a unique way of moving that I really kinda expected Sing to stick to this, or at least make them more hunched over or do something to make them a bit more real, instead of the weird “walrus head on gorilla body” design we got.
To start with, walruses are insanely heavy and huge. A male gets up to 12ft long. To put it into perspective, a walrus standing up would be roughly the same height as an elephant. Mason really should be as tall as Meena but he’s like, 2 Busters.
Tumblr media
Real life walruses could never stand on their rear flippers because of their sheer size, and because flippers are not legs. They’re too large and heavy for their adapted limbs to support. That’s why they do that weird flopping about thing that walruses and seals do. So it’s not a case of just making them stand on two legs like every other animal. However now that I’ve looked at him a bit more, Mason is a lot smaller than he “should” be, which makes me think maybe Sing walruses evolved quite differently. They’re much smaller, lighter, and thus able to stand. Maybe also their rear flippers never reached the stage of being super short and small, and are some sort of weird leg/flipper middle stage rather than just being flippers.
Ok Mason, you’re not as bad as I thought you were. But I still don’t like your design.
Also according to the Wiki there’s seals in some advert somewhere but I can’t find it. I’d love to see if they are designed the same as Mason so please if anyone can find it, let me know!
Here’s the canon “rules” I can gather for aquatic animals:
🐳 Honestly there aren’t any
🐳 ok ok, they generally only wear accessories rather than proper clothes but some do also wear full outfits (shrimp)
🐳 They still need water to survive and it hints that there’s an aquatic biome for them to live and work in, with regular cities having waterways as a method of transportation for them. I like this idea and hope it’s explored more
🐳 Bioluminescence can do whatever you want it to do as long as it looks nice, but it’s still limited to animals who have it in real life (which is basically just some fish and invertebrates)
🐳 Some, like the whales and fish, are essentially just the same as real life ones. Others, like squid and shrimp, are more mammalian now. Somewhere, evolution went wild and completely changed the body design of squid completely, reversing their heads and torsos
🐳 Walruses are smaller than they are in real life, and now able to support their bodies on two… flippers? They are much, much more humanoid now and are incredibly different to their real life counterparts
My main take away from this is that mammalian body types have become the norm in the Sing universe. Take (almost) any real animal, make it sort of humanoid, and it’ll belong in Sing. I reckon it’s some kind of convergent evolution thing where animals end up looking similar.

Faes and Celestials - General lore
The Faes of my imaginary world are bug-inspired fantasy people. They have features taken from/inspired by real-life bugs, while still mostly looking human. The rules for how these features work/are distributed are still pretty loose because I can't make up my mind and I like to keep my options open. Some will have magically retractable features, while others may just have them all the time. Some will have certain features that others don't. I'm just doing me, who cares about rules.
There are many types of Faes, from the tribal societies of Spiders to the hellish and mythical underwater cities of Crustaceans, not to mention a whole range of different insects with different societal organizations. I'll cover each of those in more detail in separate posts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(ID under the cut at the end of the post)
Celestials take inspiration from both real-life birds and angels/dragons. The bird inspirations aren't as strong as the Faes' bug inspirations because I kinda gave up halfway through (sorry, I'm simply not as knoweldgeable about bids nor as into them as I am with bugs), but they're technically here.
There are 2 types of Celestials, Angels and Dragons (I'm not sure I like those names but I haven't found anything better yet).
Angels are pretty much what you'd imagine with this name, normal human-looking people who can sprout wings. The wings do take very different shapes from person to person, some can be basic feathered wings but some will be like. Electricity arc vaguely shaped like wings. It can be anything, really, but it does allow all of them to fly. There's definitely some big christian influences in their culture, but we'll cover that in some other post.
Dragons are also human-shaped but they can have scales and slit pupils. They're like spicy humans. And some of them can turn into actual dragons, but those actual dragons are like. Inspired by the idea that birds are dinosaurs and dragons are inspired by dinosaurs and anyways, what if dragons looked more like feathered dinosaurs than just fully scaled lizards with wings y'know? (at least following the typical european dragon designs, I know there are other types of dragons on other cultures, but this is the one I'm most familiar with).

1st picture: A digital drawing of 3 spider-inspired fantasy characters standing next to each other. They all have tan skin in more or less unnatural shades, from pinkish brown to purplish brown to straight-up blueish purple. They all have several pairs of eyes, either 3 or 4 pairs. They all expose the skin of their torso heavily.
2nd picture: A traditional drawing of a merfolk character with crustacean traits, such as chitinous plates covering their body, extra pairs of bug-like legs along the sides of their tail, and antennaes. They are laying down on the floor with their arms crossed in front of them and their head laying down on their arms.
3rd picture: A digital drawing of 4 butterfly or moth inspired fantasy characters. Their names, pronouns, and the species of moth/butterfly that inspired their design is written at the top. Morphée (he/him, Hyalophora cecropia) is a small child with light skin and short black hair, wearing a cape colored like a cecropia moth's wings. He's holding an ivory-colored mask in his hand. Thanatos (he/him, Spilosoma lubricipeda) is a man with light skin and long spiky black hair attached in a high ponytail, dressed in dark blues and black, with a thick black cape covered in white spots, reminiscent of a moth's wings. Hypnos (he/him, Spilosoma lubricipeda) is a light-skinned man with short black hair dressed in a white kimono and a white cape with fur on the shoulders and black spots, that make it look reminiscent of a moth's wings. All 3 of these characters look like they're related to each other. Finally, Aupébine (he/they, Cithaerias pireta aurora) is a small androgynous-looking person with light skin and long white hair that fades to pink, attached in a low ponytail. They're dressed in fancy old-fashioned army clothes with frills and lace, and a transparent cape with the motifs of a butterfly's wings on it.
4th picture: A digital drawing of 4 bee or wasp inspired fantasy characters. Their names, pronouns and the insect species that inspired their design is written at the top. Anthéa (they/them, Apis mellifera ligustica) is a small feminine-looking person with brown skin and shoulder-length curly blond hair, shaved on one side of the head. They're wearing a bustier dress that looks like a narcissus flower, and their skin is sprinkled with golden glitter. Chardon (he/him, Bombus lapidarius) is a tall fat man with black skin and vitiligo patches visible on his face and arms, and black kinky hair attached in a high ponytail. He's wearingsunglasses, a chestplates and leg armor, and has a very big and fluffy fur patch draped over his shoulders. Bee wings are visible behind his back. Quince (he/him, Sphex pensylvanicus) is a tall and slender man with black skin and straight short black hair slicked back. He's wearing black clothes with blue and purple iridescent borders, and black leg and arm armor. He's also wearing pendant earrings and has a scar over his left eye. A pair of purplish blue iridescent wings are visible behind him. Nemesia (they/them, Vespa velutina) is a feminine looking person with brown skin and long wavy brown hair that fades to blond. They're wearing golden leg armor with hornet markings on it, and golden arm armor as well. A pair of brown translucent hornet wings are visible behind them.
5th picture: A digital drawing of a male knight character with tan skin and brown hair slicked back and attached in a low ponytail. He's dressed in shades of blue and grey, with some golden armor pieces, and is holding a golden spear with one hand. He has a halo and wings that both look like blueish white electric arcs.
6th picture: A digital drawing of a male knight character. He has slightly tan skin and straight black hair attached in a knot in the back of his head, with some bangs falling over the side of his face. He's standing straight and resting his hand over the tip of the hilt of a saber that is planted in the ground. He's wearing full plate armor and has a cape draped over his shoulder that is colored like a crowned crane's wings, white on the upper part and dark red on the bottom feathers. He also has a golden halo that is reminicent of the crowned crane's crown of yellow feathers.
7th picture: A digital drawing of 2 male twin characters. They have brown skin and ark brown hair of the same cut but slightly different lengths. They're both wearing masks shaped roughly like the skull of a dragon, with horns. They're both dressed in slightly different shades of blue. One is wearing a tabard over a chestplate and chainmail, while the other is wearing a fantasy military-looking coat with a long dark cape that drapes around his neck.
8th picture: A digital drawing of a dragon. It has a long snout, reminiscent of some dog breeds, and a long neck covered in black feathers. Its scales are dark grey with some golden motifs around the eyes and on the chest. It also has slender, tipped back horns. Its eyeshave black sclera and golden irises. /end ID]

My Roommates from Atlantis
Prologue
A FNAF ☀️ & 🌙 Mermay AU
Ever wonder where mythical creatures originated from? How did they come about? Myths and legends had to come from somewhere, surely it wasn’t just people making up stories to occupy their time… right? Across cultures there are similarities between the mythical beasts that men encountered throughout history. Yes there are differences but the core traits remain the same. For example, dragons existed in Norse mythology as well as Asian legends, Greeks also had dragons that came in many shapes and forms. Such similarities between cultures, myths, and legends HAVE to have some truth to them. Surely some of the creatures that you imagined as a child were real, somewhere. At least that’s what you used to think a few months ago.
If someone told you that your little island tourist town off the coast of Athens was a refuge for sirens, would you have believed them? Probably not. There are many so called “sightings” of mermaids or sirens in the area but you had always chalked it up to just being a tourist attraction, ways to bring money in and hype the guided reef and ruin tours your island home is known for. You’ve done hundreds of dives and never seen any indication of intelligent human-fish hybrids, they are just myths… or rather WERE myths. Now you know better than to doubt the existence of any magical creatures that scientists declare were never real. They are real, they are very powerful, very dangerous, and really, really annoying sometimes.
What started out as photos for tourists grew into a hobby of yours, marine photography. Taking underwater photos of people doing lame peace signs while scuba diving around the reefs was dull and quite boring until you became fascinated with the buzzing life behind the people. The communities that the reefs hold and the many mysteries behind each fish, mammal, or crustacean captivate you every time. Though you’ve seen these reefs and ruins countless times, there is always something new to discover.
Life eventually gave you a break and you were able to afford your own small boat. Rickety and probably not the safest but it is yours nonetheless. You took it out often to go take photos of the marine life around your town, mostly for yourself but you do sell them to local shops as postcards, prints, or larger framed decor. After developing photos several months ago you began to notice a figure in the background. Large like a shark. Well hidden. Almost unnoticeable but definitely there once you found it. It wasn’t like any normal creature you had seen, at first you could never come up with a logical explanation. After spending all your savings on an underwater camera, hiding it, then recording clear footage of the creature did you devise a plan to get a closer look at it. That was your first mistake.
As the saying goes, curiosity killed the cat or in this case, the dumb human.
After several attempts you finally got the face to face introduction you wanted but you injured yourself in the process and nearly drowned. He still hasn’t let that one go either, teases you constantly for it. You had made friends with a siren that you didn’t think really existed, it was cool. You learned a lot from him, a lot about the society of reef life and some other oddities like a dolphin that had a crush on one of your coworkers. One thing lead to another and you found out your new friend had a brother, a brother who preferred the night over the day. That was one meeting you were NOT prepared for.
Kraken. Leviathan. Giant squid. Any of them would suffice but none are less terrifying and easy to greet without freezing with fear, especially when he’s a trickster and loves scaring you half to death any chance he gets. You tried not to ask questions when the siren (who is about the size of a great white shark) introduces the kraken (who is easily the size of two large fishing boats) as his beloved brother. Family is family you guess, even though it made no sense whatsoever. Now you had one siren best friend and one gigantic, mischievous urchin who loved annoying you.
Everything was great for a while, you got VIP tours of areas you’ve never been to, seen treasure from multiple eras, and learned how to be friends with one mean looking “pet” shark. Life was pretty good until you had the pleasure of meeting siren hunters. You didn’t know such people existed, let alone how extreme they were. They were willing to do whatever it took to capture sirens at the expense of nothing, not even trading human lives for information would stop them. Why they are so desperate to capture sirens is still a mystery, one you aren’t willing to dig to find the answer to. Unfortunately you learned the hard way that getting noticed by them usually leads to death and although your new friends saved you, the price for such a deed cost you your life as a normal human.
Yep. You’re officially a scaly sea dweller. Perfect.
Which now brings you to the predicament you are currently facing. Conveniently sirens (and krakens) can live on land for periods of time disguised as humans which is just great and totally what you needed. To make matters worse, you’ve discovered they are no ordinary fish people either, they are gods, THE gods. The rulers of the seas, creators of the mermaids and sea creatures of legend, Poseidon and Neptune. So now you have two “cousins” staying with you, sleeping in your living room, eating your food, spending your money, taking up what minimal space you have at your shack of a house all while trying to hide your secrets from the crazy, psychotic, siren hunters who want to skin you alive.
This is going to be one LONG summer….

hello!
i’m wondering if you’re willing to do a reading on halle and ddg 🫣 are they actually in love and is halle pregnant? also, what do they think about the way people talk about their relationship on social media?
A relationship reading on:
Halle Bailey & DDG 🧜🏾‍♀️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Top row is Halle. Bottom row is DDG.
Halle loves DDG immensely. I feel like Halle manifested him or was praying to God for a man with traits similar to him. She will do anything it takes to salvage their relationship. Halle will be down to be his "rider". She is very much delulu over him. I am being reminded of Toni Braxton when she dated Birdman.
As for DDG... the feeling is not mutual. He is still heartbroken over a previous relationship (Rubi Rose came to my mind very quickly, so I believe it is her that he still can't let go of). I feel like DDG will hurt both of these women more than he already he has. He is very detached and cold towards his partners.
Channeled songs:
Lookin' For You by Kirk Franklin
Tumblr media
Left is Halle. Center is their shared thoughts. Right is DDG
Channeled song:
No More Pain by Mary J. Blige
Part of Your World (Reprise II) by Halle Bailey
I could hear Halle sniffling and crying, she sounds very disheartened by what people are saying about their relationship. "Oh my god, they're right..." I feel like Halle knows people are telling the truth, but she can not stomach it. She's in denial about their relationship and choosing to dismiss it. Halle is choosing to focus on the positives of their relationship. It's as if she's seeing things through rose colored glasses. I believe this Queen of Cups reversed has to do with her role as The Little Mermaid. The increase of people's comments and opinions about them as a couple or even individuals, makes them feel deeply upset. DDG is taking what people say as a form of a challenge. He could have done something to stir the pot so people could gossip more. "Bad publicity is still good publicity" basically. DDG is very sneaky and manipulative on the low.
Tumblr media
To be possibly impregnated by that crustacean sounds like a nightmare, oof 🤢🤮
My belly got warm while I was shuffling and omg... I think she is pregnant?! Or if not, DDG plans to get her pregnant very soon. (I heard "He better be wearing a condom???" - Chloe?!). There is a lot of signs of fertility here. DDG is tryna trap her... He is jealous of her success and would sabotage her greatly. I feel that for Halle to get pregnant, she would be oblivious that he's basically plotting against her. She'd be too happy at the thought of being a mother and would feel like this is a wish fulfillment for her. Halle could think having a baby would progress their relationship for the better and has hope in starting a family. This is not good... If Halle were to get pregnant, her relationship with DDG is gonna turn for the worse. Things will get hectic and she could be very stressed during her pregnancy. Halle will be left feeling disappointed. TW: I feel there could be a possibility of her having a miscarriage :(. If not, DDG could do something that leaves her feeling abandoned or hurt again. Halle's spirit guides are trying desperately to get her attention to see what better opportunities are out there in her love life, but she is too blind to see.

thinking about spherus magna so so so much and i NEED to write about the tribes and their bodies and their eating habits
to start off - agori and glatorian are like dogs and wolves: same progenitor, compatible to create hybrids capable of reproduction, different appearances and strengths but similar genetic curriculum.
the seven tribes have specific differences in appearance but most of their anatomy is still the same - humanoid, sharp spaced teeth, vestigial minuscule stubby tail, flat nose, small ears. cross-tribe children weren't very common before the shattering (big ass planet and all) and might become more common as time passes (lots of people died and whatnot), but due to there being no real hierarchy in the gene pool they wont necessarily be perfect hybrids of their parents: more often than not they will resemble only one of them, or showcase smaller traits of the other.
Tapyri (Fire tribe) - oval pupils stretched horizontally, tough skin that secretes a layer of protective mucus good for hot dry climates. different skin pigmentation in the form of spotted patterns, mostly on the back, is surprisingly common.
Gaquri (Water tribe) - crescent pupils stretched horizontally, drop-shaped sturdy scales that slightly overlap. hands and feet are lightly webbed between their fingers, while the eyes have a protective lid for underwater diving.
Lebori (Jungle tribe) - beaded pupils stretched vertically, short thin feathers, mostly greenish, which generally have little use. fingertips, palms and soles have small hooked cells to better their grip when climbing trees and rocks.
Koniri (Ice tribe) - rhomboidal pupils stretched vertically, thick fur that sheds and changes color depending on the seasons. powerful nails and bite, build up fat much easier than other tribes and are incredible sprinters on short distances.
Banuri (Sand tribe) - slit pupils stretched vertically, very small polygonal scales tightly placed together. small sharp horn-like protrusions all over the body, mostly the head, and remarkable adaptability to varying temperatures.
Potori (Rock tribe) - rectangular pupils stretched horizontally, wooly fur that varies in thickness depending on place of origin*. duller teeth, immune to most poisons, have heightened endurance in harsh climates and tougher bones.
Fezeri (Iron tribe) - round pupils similar to a photocamera's aperture, sectioned carapace not unlike that of an insect over skin. have a tendency to develop reddish crusts with age which need to be removed through cyclical moltings.
when it comes to food. oh baby.
ANY CREATURE in the desert is fair game. theyre most of the meat available and by god these people will Fucking Get It or die trying. blood is both cooked and drunk (usually on special occasions) and is often given to sickly, pregnant or young individuals; bones are generally split open for marrow, but while smaller ones can be grated or used to make stock broth, the bigger ones are kept to make weapons or tools - the only ones that eat them are the Bone Hunters, which is why they're called that in the first place, and the Zesk and Vorox, who have built in weapons.
Tapyri have very fertile soil but horrendously high temperatures, so they can grow only a select few plants, mostly cereals. common foods are iron snails and a type of edible lava residue, but a real delicacy is the elusive heat-resistant mole, which is incredibly fat and tender but also fucking FAST. they cook mostly on slabs of rock heated over lava, or on roasts
Gaquri eat anything that enjoys humidity - slugs, leeches**, tadpoles, frogs, other small amphibians, fish and crustaceans if they had any. their vegetables are cave mosses and freshwater algae or kelps - a specific type produces "kelp jades", round fruits that are sticky as hell. they tend to eat things raw, but can also afford to steam or boil their stuff
Lebori have the vastest array of fruits and greens available thanks to living in the green lung of a fucking desert and everybody imports that good stuff from them. their local protein source is comprised mostly insects***, worms and other invertebrates, which they employ in various methods. since they have access to oil, they often default to frying food
Koniri have access to small game and a discrete amount of forests in which they've learned to recognize edible berries, leaves and especially branches. a typical dish for them is a bundle of sticks wrapped in very far strips of meat. in some lakes they also harvest a strange type of anemone. when they don't freeze-dry their food, they tend to either boil or roast it
Banuri relied evenly on hunting, gathering, and husbandry. Zesk and Vorox have adapted thoroughly to the desert ecosystem, and while the first still gather lichens, the latter most hunt in packs
Bone Hunters, being scavengers, eat anything and everything; the Skrall had a more plant-based diet, but in Bara Magna added salt-dried meat; other Potori prefer vegetables like briars and thistles
Fezeri lived in fairly comfortable climates and could afford a pretty varied and balanced diet. Telluris allegedly eats, but nobody can confirm. Sahmad is trying to fuckin survive. give him a break
*Bone Hunters, native to the Bara Magna area, resemble goats; the Skrall, native to a snowy mountain area, resemble sheep. similar cases are found in all tribes across Spherus Magna (ex. BaMa lebori are more akin to geckos, BoMa lebori to lemurs)
**Gaquri would, as such, be the first to try and eat a kraata or krana without even thinking about it. the consistency would not bother them, but they would be mostly perplexed to discover there's food that tastes, respectively, "dark" and "bright"
***scarabax beetles not included, because they taste horribly and are not worth the effort of catching to feed off of them for anybody. Click will live forever
