POV: You've traveled for several weeks to visit your sister tribe in the south in hopes of negotiating new trade deals. Rumor is their tiger seal season has been excellent this year, and their engineers have been hard at work developing a new power source that could replace the need for coal.
You were greeted warming, and shown to their meeting hall; a large though rather unassuming round house in the middle of town-- village, more like. Everything in the South is understated and quaint. Quite charming, really. However this… girl entered the round house not long after you did, followed closely by the most ENORMOUS wolf you have ever seen. She introduced herself as Chief Hakoda's Daughter. That was nearly an hour ago, and there has yet to be any sign of the chief himself.
The girl-- the Southern Princess keeps trying to steer your conversation away from now worn out pleasantries and toward business. This is the most frustrating development of your entire trip, and that is including when you nearly lost half your cargo to some shoddy tiedown work in the storm that caught your boat, PLUS the extra week of time that it cost you to dock and make repairs. You tug at the clasp of your parka, feeling altogether too hot in the cozy space with the Princess smiling thinly at you.
"Tell me, where might Prince Sokka be?" you say, remembering that the Chief of the South had two children. The beast, whose great paws Princess Katara is comfortably seated between, starts to growl. She strokes his muzzle, and then the Princess's grin turns more wolfish than that of her guard.
"My brother is right here, but I don't think you will want to negotiate with him," the young woman says. "He's a bit more apt to employ his teeth."
Here's one I made back in 2019. Man, my art style really has changed over the years. This was still on my laptop, though now I work on a tablet, instead.
This was the first time I started toying with the idea that this Avatar!Au could go into a different direction than I had intended. Normally Hiccup would have this on/off relationship with Heather (yeah, I know, I really didn't like Astrid back then), and Jack would have a one-sided crush on Rapunzel. Somehow, the story shifted and this came out, instead!
So, here we have a Hiccup realizing that he might like the mysterious ice spirit more than he probably should.
I made this art piece Justice for Kataang, I swear if netflix did some changes i’ll still be very dissapointed, fr tho, it must stay true to the original.
Also sorry if I took a really long break, was fixing my poor mental health, plus im still a student ya know? But im still ok.
Just remembered somthn i saw a lil while ago but I hate fan art depictions of Katara telling Sokka he "needs a haircut" bc 1. Basically all the Watertribe men are shown with long hair, so this goes against their worldbuilding canon to begin with 2. Just reads as a racist microaggression & part of the wider issue of white ppl making fun of Native men for having long hair.
[ID: digital art of Zuko and Katara in fancy detailed hanfu. Katara is in blue with silver and red accents and Zuko is in red with gold and blue accents. Katara is also wearing a large silver headpiece with moons and the southern watertribe symbol and a second betrothal necklace under her mother's, with a yin yang engraving. /End ID]
um do i have to seriously put up with this mess in the kataang tag over the duration of this wretched live action? it’s bad enough i’ve had to see lightskin/whitewashed katara and sokka art over the last few months with the tag “netflix” on it but now y’all are purporting this ship war nonsense while pretending not to ship one or the other (the zk mention lmao pls crossing it out does NOT stop us from seeing it btw!!!)
anyone hyping or defending that netflix series with that casting mess is getting blocked
fyi sokka’s actor is WHITE and none of the watertribe actors are inuit plus are all 50 shades lighter than the cartoon
I am looking for a fanfic I was reading, which I cannot find I'm my ao3 history and I'm like 90% sure I came across it on your blog.
I it was a reblog of an art piece featuring Zuko sparring some Watertribe guy and the fic was about Zuko getting caputerd by Hakoda and his crew and then them making demands for ransom to Ozai, and him showing A+ parenting as always? (dunno I lost it halfway through the first chapter)
I'd be grateful for any help!
<3
AHHHHH!!! You mean THIS ART!?!?!?! By the wonderful & amazing @chiptrillino !!!
(One of my favorite fanfics & one of my absolute favorite artist<3)
are you a circumpolar person? the way you made that one katara art was excellent
im not, but i try to do my due diligence when pulling design inspiration from actual existing cultures.
the katara design i assume you're referring to isnt actually very good in this regard, and i did a very bare minimum effort in putting it together, and that fact that it took off the way it did is honestly a little frustrating lol
gonna take this opportunity to show off what i consider to be much stronger designs on my part, wrt to reimagining the watertribe parkas
I have been thinking about a hagsquad atla au with Eda as the avatar and with Raine and Darius as two of her bending masters. Currently I have Eda (and Lillith) as waterbenders, Raine as a firebender and Darius (and maybe Alador) as an earthbender. I have a reason to why at least I wanted Eda and Lillith to be watertribe that I can go into in another ask if you want to, but I would love to se your take on this (maybe also with some art plz 🥺👉👈)
If you don’t want to get into this then you can just ignore this ask
I would actually like to hear the reason for Eda and Lilith being Waterbenders because I always thought they would be Firebenders and Raine would be Waterbender (or maybe even Air) 🤓
What are five characters or groups/organizations in Avatar the Last Airbender that you wish had gotten more screentime than they did in the show? Just out of curiosity.
Is saying the southern watertribe (either in the village, or with the warriors later) as my first answer cheating? Idk, but I feel like so much much of the rest of the world got fleshed out with lots of IRL cultural references, and the South is supposed to be something unique from the North, but all we got was a vaguely pasted on sub polar indigenous aesthetic and. That's it. By the time we come back to them in the comics, they've already changed DRASTICALLY under the North's influence, so it's not like the post show canon even addresses that. They deserve more.
Similarly, the Sun Warriors were given a coat of somewhat Aztec flavored paint and sent in their merry way. I would LOVE to see Zuko coming back to the island to study under the Sun Warriors and incorporate their teachings into his philosophy and style of leadership as well as his bending.
Could we see more theater groups outside of the Ember Island Players? It would be dope af to see the different styles and traditions, both across the Fire Nation since that's one of the only forms of art to survive being purged by Azulon, and through out the other nations.
i guess it would be neat to see what happens with the Dai Li after the show!
We know there's pockets of Sky Bison that survived the 100 year war, but I would love to see how the dragons recover. Finding survivors in singles and/or extremely isolated groups similar to Ran and Shaw. Druk isn't the last, he's the first of many.
