As I complained in my post about emailing coworkers, I think the single most difficult aspect of work life is communication. This is especially true for people who struggle with communication in the first place as neurodivergent people. My sister (slash coworker) offhandedly mentioned hearing about something that we now both use at work.

goblin.tools is "a collection of small, simple, single-task tools, mostly designed to help neurodivergent people with tasks they find overwhelming or difficult". It is completely free, works on desktop or mobile, and if you really would like an app for it, it's extremely cheap on the app store.

The Formalizer helps if you're not sure how to word an email. You put in what you're trying to say and it will help you word it the way you want, whether you want it to sound more or less professional, casual, etc.

The Judge is good for both sending and receiving messages. It checks how your own tone comes across or how other people may be trying to communicate from their text.

There's also time-management tools:

Magic Todo helps you break down big tasks into smaller pieces, and Lets you tweak how detailed it gets, too.

The Estimator tries to give you an very rough idea of how long a task may take based on what it is and how stressful you may find it. I haven't used this one yet but I think it might help some people who have time-blindness like I do.

The Compiler is good if you have a basic idea of things you need to do, but you're not sure how to break it all down. Just type out your thoughts and it will use that to make a list.

The Chef is for getting cooking ideas based on the ingredients and tools you have available. I know I tend to get paralyzed by trying to figure out making dinner, so this is great. I've seen apps that can do this but I've not had the best results with them, so I'm going to give this one a try.

If you need instructions for any of them, just click on the question mark at the top of each page. Full disclosure, these tools work based on AI, so your mileage will definitely vary, but so far the Formalizer and Magic Todo have already been a huge help for me.

so i didn't get my job. my boss and my would-have-been boss brought me into their office today and said i did really well in the interview, the job was mine, until the last person really blew them away. i have to understand, she's really incredible, and i'll be so impressed with her when she starts next week. and it's important to remember, they really want to hang onto me because it's hard to find good people, and next time a role comes up i should apply for it because that might be the one! i'm a valued member of the team, i shouldn't lose hope. but of course with an extra permanent person on the team there won't be as many casual hours going anymore, just an unfortunate side effect of choosing someone over me. and don't worry, they'll announce it to everyone in the all staff meeting tomorrow that i'm not invited to so when i walk in at 9am everyone will know i was only second-best.

it has been literally one (1) single week since i left my job and i’ve already heard about another round of layoffs that happened since I left and i’ve gotten messages from 2 former coworkers telling me they’re also thinking about quitting without another job lined up because they’re having nervous breakdowns. Unfathomable to me the amount of details some folks put on their out-of-office, personal appointment notifications to the team. Just say you have an appointment to go to, I do not need to know anything else. "I have a doctor's appointment for [reason], setting it this time block for 2 hours because I have to drive to [location]." Ma'am, I did not ask. I did not need to know. I really don't think anyone else needs to know either. Take your fucking PTO, my god. You can't catch me telling anyone at work that that block in my calendar is for ANYTHING specific unless I get asked directly and my explanation will be the bare minimum. None of them need to know my personal life, thanks.

I love humming birds! They’re such gorgeous animals.

I was delivering to a house one time that had a bunch of hummingbird feeders. The hummingbirds would fight over them. One time I was walking up to the front door and a hummingbird smacked into the side of my head. Turns out they aren’t the best at flying when they’re fighting each other.

i am trying to be really empathetic when i have to send rejection mails to kids applying for an apprenticeship but some of them are really testing me when they apply for an apprenticeship in media and web while clearly not having read any of the websites telling them that we don't offer apprenticeships this year
