Got my garden in today. Oddly some things wintered over like kale, spinach and leeks. They literally survived snow and many frosts. And the spinach last year just shot up and went to seed. So I replanted as we were headed toward fall thinking it needed cooler weather. It didn’t grow fast enough to pick. But it just stayed at this kid stage all winter long and I’m hoping it takes off. The kale is doing great. And of course I have volunteers in my compost pile. It looks like broccoli and a cabbage, neither of which did well last year. I’m going to let it go and see if it develops. Dollars to donuts the plantings in my beds don’t work but these renegades do. Shelter. 48” x 64”. Finally finished this up and it will be in my show @fountainheadgallery in May. I’ve been at this one for over 2 years and just kept putting it aside. Bumi. (Tiger’s name.) Here is where this is at right now. Still thinking about parts of it. But it may be done. I worked on repeating the pattern of the tiger’s tail in the floor but it may be too subtle. I went into shapeland a bit and just responded intuitively. I may still put floor cracks in and this would unify the floor I think too much. Study for next painting. They are wolves although one actually looks more like a sheep 🙄. This is gouache which is so hard for me because it dries darker then what I mix on the palette. But I get in the ball park. I decided on a limited palette using mostly the fall colors of the woods. Then I read it into procreate and tweaked some things. Tiger. Detail. Every bit of me loved painting this. Those stripes are amazing! I caught him mid rollover. It was like he was showing off. I’m getting closer to the finish on this painting which is taking a lot longer than I thought it would. I’m wanting to explore some patterns and some ideas for making more shapes. This may move me more into my imagination and some abstract ideas that are floating around in my head after Zoey Frank’s fabulous class on pictorial space. Several little pinky prints in this closeup. I finally have decided not to fix these. In the old days I used to be aghast at every pinky print and immediately repair them. As my painting process became one stroke followed by fix up it grew to saving pinky print clean up til the end. Now I’m like nah - it is part of how I paint. WIP. Detail. Coming along. I sometimes think I paint too thick and it kicks up a lot of paint boogers. Which make close up pictures look rough. But at viewing or painting distance these seem less apparent. So when I take a close up I’m often startled by the rough texture I didn’t realize I was creating. So there you have it. I’ve decided cameras exaggerate reality and aren’t to be trusted. So two conclusions. Go see paintings in person. And when using photo references to paint from you can do whatever you want. Tell even bigger lies.
