Chapter 1 - Chapter 2
___________________________________________________________
It was dark and warm when Mirabel peeked behind a rock. It was a bit away from the place they had met yesterday, but she wanted to know if he was there before showing up. And he was! At the same place, sitting down, and anxiously fidgeting with his green shirt. She took a moment to contemplate him. She really liked his hair, and wondered how it’d feel under her fingertips. She knows how her own wet curls feel, but she has never touched dry hair.
She gets close to him, and makes some noise so he won’t get startled.
“Hello, there.” She says, trying to sound casual.
“General Kenobi.” He shuts his eyes closed, embarrassed of himself. “I’m sorry, I… I meant… Hi”
She smiles, even though she doesn’t quite understand what just happened. Must be a human thing. Then she remembers her present.
“Oh, I… “ Suddenly, she feels embarrassed about it. “I brought you a little something. I mean, it’s nothing, I just… Wanted to thank you for meeting me here, and being nice…”
He doesn’t say anything, so she just gets closer to the shore, until the top of her body is laying on the sand next to him, and her tail receives the waves that come and go. He tries not to look at her, and she doesn’t understand why. Did she do something wrong?
“I brought you this.” She extends her arm. “I hope you like it”
Bruno looks at the small shining disk in her hand, and takes it with curiosity. It’s heavy, and golden. It has a cross on one side, and a shield on the other side. It takes him a moment to realize this is…
“Mirabel, this is spanish gold!”
He takes one hand to his forehead, and takes a closer look at the golden coin in his hand. No doubt it’s so heavy.
“Is that good?”
He looks at her and suddenly remembers she has no idea what that means. He also remembers when he had no idea about it.
“Where did you find this?” He asks. Because he doesn’t really know if it’s good or bad.
“Oh, a couple of years ago I found a huge ship!” She says, excited. “And it has a lot of interesting stuff. I thought I could find you a gift there.”
He wishes he could say “show me”, get in the water and go there right now. But he doesn’t even know if he can be a merman again. When he first decided to live amongst humans, everytime he took a shower, his tail would appear and it was a disaster. But with time, it was only his legs with a lot of scales, and then, those disappeared too.
“That sounds wonderful.” He says instead. Then he remembers “Oh! I have something for you too. Or, well, u-us?”
Her eyes lighten up. He takes a small plastic box from his bag, and two small forks. She remembers the thing whose name she doesn’t know (the silver spoon). He proceeds to open the box, and she can feel a number of smells she had never felt before. When she goes up she usually smells… Salt. Wood. Sand. But this is new. It’s sweet and acidic.
“Okay, so…” He says, a bit nervous, but also excited “I didn’t live here all of my life. I was from… Somewhere else. And when I got here, this is something that really surprised me.”
He offers her a fork, and she just looks at him, embarrassed.
“Ay, disculpa.” Bruno takes the other fork and holds it in front of him. “Like this. It works like a small trident.”
“A small trident.” She repeats, in a whisper.
Then he puts the small plastic box between them. It contained different diced fruits.
“These are my favorite fruits. They grow from different trees.” He stabbed a piece of fruit. “This is guayaba. Very sweet, hard but edible seeds.”
Mirabel tried a piece of the same color. It was sweet and acidic at the same time.
“These yellow circles.” She picked one “Banana. Soft and sweet.”
The texture was so different!
“What about this one?”
“Dragonfruit.” He answered. “I mostly like the way it looks, to be honest.”
A bit sweet, soft, not really intense. She liked it.
“Oh, that one.” He said, when she took the last piece. “Chicle or chicozapote.”
This one, she loved it. It was soft, but very sweet. If she had known what honey tastes like, she would’ve thought of it. She groaned with pleasure before swallowing. She had never imagined such tastes could exist!
“That was so delicious.” She said with excitement. “I can’t believe you can eat those everyday! You’re so lucky…”
He chuckled, scratching his nape with a nervous look.
“Well, I eat other stuff too… Mostly fish.” She lifted an eyebrow. “I’m a fisherman.”
“Oh, right… Do you like your job?”
He stared at her for a moment. No one had ever asked him that before.
“I guess? I mean…” He started drawing figures in the sand. ”I’m good at it. It’s easy. Pays my bills. But I prefer writing telenovelas.”
“Telenovelas?”
Right.
“They’re stories with a lot of drama and ridiculous plot twists, basically.” He shrugs. “I like them. I write them sometimes.”
She sighs.
“Your world is… Fascinating.” She turns around on her side and lays on her back. “There are so many things I’ve never heard about, and it makes me wanna leave my current life behind.”
He doesn’t look at her. When he was still a merman, he was used to nudity. It was all he ever knew. It was still rude to stare, but you could see people’s bodies and it was normal. Then he started living as a human, and he got used to a different way to live. He even felt more comfortable that way. He never really liked his body too much, always felt insecure. And having layers to hide under made him feel much better.
“But these, uh… meetings.” Ae said. “They’re part of your current life too”.
She smiled.
“Yeah, I guess they are. ” She giggled a bit. “Does that mean we can keep meeting?”
He tries not to show how surprised and excited he is when he answers “Y-Yeah, of course!”.
“Maybe next time… You could teach me how to walk?”
This time he can’t help it, and turns his head around to look at her. She's serious. It’s not a joke.
“Walk?” This time he can’t hide how nervous he is “A-Are you sure?”
“Well, yes.” She shrugs. “If I want to know what’s out there, I have to learn how to walk”.
Well, that’s… Unexpected? Dangerous? Exciting?
“I… Ugh.” He groans. “I know you want to know, but are you sure?”
“Of course I am!“ She lifts her upper body with an arm, and bends her tail “Bruno, please. I can’t do this without you”
And that’s all he needed to hear. He’s fucked.

Chapter 1
Chapter II
She had heard a lot of things about humans, all her life. But nothing could ever compare to the experience of actually talking to one. She was scared at first, of course. The first seconds she didn’t know what to do. But… He was gentle. Kind. And oddly relatable.
The way he tried not to scare her was… heartwarming? cute? She doesn’t know. But it was a nice feeling. And she can’t wait to experience it again. Are all humans like that? No, he- Bruno said some would love to capture a mermaid. That’s scary. But he’s not one of those humans, right? He was warning her.
‘I should bring him a present’
She wanted to thank him for… well, being so nice. And agreeing to see each other again. But it had to be something humans liked. Something made for humans, not for mermaids. Something… Made by other humans, maybe? Because she knew the exact location for that. She had been visiting the place for a couple of months. Apparently humans had forgotten about it, but she was certain she could find something interesting for her new friend.
It was huge. A huge ship. She had never seen anything like that before or after. She always wondered what happened, why had it sunk like that. How long ago. Who was there.
She also explored most of it. And she found a lot of human treasures! Like… well, she didn’t know what it was (a teacup, a silver spoon), but she liked it. Still, she thought, probably the most valuable things were not easy to find. She needed something special, something shiny, eye-catching.
Little did she know, his new friend was having the exact same thoughts.
“I wanna get her something nice, something interesting.” Said Bruno, fidgeting with his green shirt.
“Wait, where are you taking her?” Asked Mauricio. Mauro, to his friends.
“Uh… The beach.”
“Por Dios, Bruno, it’s your first date in ages! You should take her somewhere else.”
“D-Date!?” He made anxiety fists with his hands over the table “Who said anything about a date?”
The mere word was too much for him. Not only in this context, but in general. He had a couple of dates when he was younger, but things never went what you’d call “great”. Most women didn’t like his rats, and thought he was living in bad conditions. Also, there’s just a certain amount of lies you can tell to avoid going swimming into the sea before it gets suspicious. Some were simply rude when it came to his telenovelas. There was always something.
Mauro stared at him over his tuna sandwich.
“Well, you said you met a girl for the first time last night.” Bruno nodded. “And she asked to meet again today, right?”
“Yeah, but…”
“That’s a date.”
“She’s…” Bruno grabbed his head with his hands. “Too young for me. To be interested in me that way.”
Mauro patiently chewed and swallowed a piece of sandwich before answering.
“Then tell her that. You don’t want to get in trouble for a highschooler”.
“She’s not a highschooler.” He sighed. “But still… Even if we don’t see each other that way, she feels… The same way I used to feel at her age. And it makes me want to help her”.
Mauro took a long sip of coke and stared at him for a moment.
“Well, whatever you do, make sure you know what your intentions are, or everything will just end up being a huge mess”
Bruno groaned and let his head back. His intentions? Probably helping the girl and stop feeling like he was doing a heinous thing.
“I mean, she’s… probably the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.” He stayed silent for a couple of seconds. “And I’m… me. She’d never see me that way”.
“Not all of us can look like Mariano, man.”
Bruno laughed and shaked his head.
“I should bring something simple, that… doesn’t make me look like I’m expecting anything from her, but at the same time shows I want to make her feel comfortable”
He looked very focused now. Mauro smiled, knowing his friend would find the solution by himself. He always did, but always needed someone to believe in him.
“What would make you feel comfortable?” Asked Mauro.
Bruno absently knocked on the wooden surface of the table before answering.
“Food. I’m a simple man.”
“Well, there you go. Just make sure it’s something she doesn’t eat often”
And it was like seeing the word “eureka” written all over his face. He had been so silly! Of course! It was so simple. He had to bring her stuff she had never experienced before. Things he had never experienced before he decided to live among the humans. The food, the telenovelas, the rats!
Now he was full of ideas, and could barely wait for night to come.

“why would you write fics for small, unpopular fandoms? you’re not gonna reach that many hits in fandoms not many people know about” ?? because I’m not writing fics for hits or kudos, I’m writing them for me because these characters are my blorbos and I have so many ideas, so much thoughts about them that my brain might explode if I don’t write them out.

Chapter 2
A/N: This is my first fic in more than 10 years, so, yeah... I'm not a native speaker, and I have no beta reader (kind of).
Tumblr media
Chapter I
Life under the sea wasn’t dull, or bad. That’s not what he meant. But Lord knows there’s no way to make his family understand that. Nothing Bruno Madrigal says can have a good side. Nothing he does is good enough. Nothing he wants is important. At least not for her mother Alma. Pepa and Julieta weren’t so harsh, but they still didn’t agree with his idea.
Okay, out there, out of the water, it was a wild idea. But how bad could it really be? He wanted to know, to explore, to experience it. He knew their bodies had the ability to adapt out of the water, so it wasn’t impossible. Risky, yes. But there was a whole world outside, a world he had never been in. He could only see part of it, from the distance. And it was not enough. So when Bruno turned 18, he decided he was old enough to make his own decisions.
With time, he started going out more and more frequently, and his bond with his family weakened in consequence. They wouldn’t accept this new lifestyle he had chosen, and he couldn’t stand the rejection and ostracism. So he decided to definitely cut ties, and make his life exclusively among humans. He found a job as a fisherman, knowing his experience underwater would help him a lot. Got a small but nice place, where he could see the sea. He still loved it, and visited everyday. Sometimes very early, before going to work, sometimes at night. But he liked being there alone, to enjoy its calming presence.
And it was one of those warm and lonely nights, when he was about to leave, that he saw her for the first time. Well, heard her first. The familiar sound of a big tail moving against the water surface, behind a huge rock. The painful memories of Alma, and also the rest of the family told him to turn around and leave, but something was telling him to do exactly the opposite.
He slowly approached the rock, as quietly as he could, holding his breath. She didn’t see him at first, which gave him time to appreciate her figure. She was young, with dark and curly hair, thick eyebrows and beautiful brown skin. A soft belly, and two small and beautiful breasts. Her tail was a nice shade of teal, still playing and splashing around. Bruno stared at it for a couple of seconds, trying to remember when had been the last time he had seen one, until a gasp interrupted his thoughts. He looked up, and saw two dark eyes staring at him. She was obviously scared, but wasn’t trying to escape.
“It-It’s okay” He said, in a quiet tone “I won’t hurt you”
Her tail wasn’t moving anymore, and she kept her eyes on him. All her senses were telling her to swim away and never look back, but for some reason she didn’t want to. Something inside her was telling her to stay, that she wasn’t in danger.
“I-I’m Bruno” He sat down on the sand, away from the water “I… I know you can understand me”.
She frowned, and doubted for a moment. He wasn’t supposed to know that. There were strict rules about engaging with humans. But… She had heard rumors. About a conflictive merman who decided to leave to live out of the water. But she always thought it was just a story.
“I’m… Mirabel” She said, hiding her body under the water, and leaving only her head outside.
“Mirabel”
They looked at each other for a moment, not knowing what to say.
“Do your parents know you’re here?”
“… No” Her face was painted with remorse “But I’m 20 now”
He let out a chuckle Mirabel didn’t understand.
“I don’t think they’ll approve this anyway” She frowned “Relax, it’s not like I can tell on you”
She giggled this time.
“I don’t think they approve anything about me” She sighs “I’ve always been… Kind of a disappointment”
That felt way too relatable.
“I know the feeling, kid” She gave him a sad smile “If it makes you feel any better, I think you’re very brave”
This time her smile was full of happiness. It was the first time someone had praised her like that, and she found out she really liked the feeling. It’s not that her parents didn’t love her, of course they did. But no one had ever called her “brave” before. Especially for doing something that went against her family wishes.
“I don’t understand why nobody wants me to come here.”
“Well, sometimes people are afraid of the unknown.”
She thought for a moment, before asking him.
“Are you afraid of me?”
He was taken aback by her question.
“I’m not… No. I’m… I’m a grown man, you’re still a teenager. Why would I be afraid of you?”
She rolled her eyes.
“You know what I’m talking about”
He coughed a little and changed his position.
“I’m not afraid of mermaids” He said, carefully thinking his words “There are stories about mermaids hunting and eating humans, but I don’t believe in that”.
She looked at him in silence for a moment.
“But, anyway…” He added, playing with sand “All humans are different. Some of us believe those stories, some dream of capturing a mermaid, stuff like that, so… yeah.” He shrugged, “Be careful.”
She lifted an eyebrow “Are you trying to scare me?”
He chuckled.
“Just a warning, kid”
She smiled, and felt like it was the moment to be “brave” again.
“If… If I come back again tomorrow, will you be here?”
He stopped playing with sand.
“You know… Just in case someone wants to capture me.”
He let out a nervous giggle, and hugged his own knees.
“That’s… Yeah. I mean- I mean, yes. Yes. I’ll be here”.
She gave him a warm smile.
“Cool”.
