TIPS FOR FRESHMAN!
okay so since i'm going to be a sophomore soon i realized i made sooooooo many stupid mistakes freshman year. i want to give tips to the new freshman so that you don't feel so outcasted and nervous ❤
Never walk in the middle of the hallway.
~ okay look... i know this one is said a lot, but the hallways are pretty much like the road. you stay on one side of the road because its SAFE and doesn't cause traffic. Upper class man will get annoyed if you stop in the middle of the hallway or even walk, because of how crowded the hallways always are. Nobody is trying to be late for class.
2. Don't stress out on the first day.
~ NOBODY knows where they're going! even seniors who have been there forever get lost! Believe me, you're not alone. There are a crazy amount of kids who are nervous about the new school year, and are stressing out. The first day will probably be scary, but there's nothing to worry about.
3. Don't be lazy... do your work.
~ okay yea i know teen angst! teen rebellion! but think about your future. even if you're quirky and say "i don't have a future." listen, no one thinks you're funny. your credits are CRUCIAL to your grade. if you don't receive enough credit freshman year you will either have to, (do the class again), (do freshman year AGAIN), or (summer school), my school offers a credit recovery class but it only will do so much for you. In some instances you won't be able to graduate with your class! Work hard so you can actually get OUT of the school, instead of having to continue just because you don't want to.
4. Don't fight??
~ This one speaks for itself. You may think people getting into fights in middle school... but in High school people just think you're immature. There is nothing cool about petty drama and punching people. You may think you look badass, but instead you just look childish. Be the bigger person. You are in your last years of school, you're maturing... so show that you're maturing.
5. Worry about your education... but also your reputation.
~ You need balance. I made the mistake of only stressing about my education that i had N.O. social life. You might be an introvert and think that you can't fit in anywhere, but that is the biggest lie. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and talk to new people, if they're salty with you don't let it get to your head, Remember: Be the bigger person. But... also don't worry more about your reputation. Education is important too! You will learn a lot of new things about yourself freshman year.
6. Okay... don't try to be bigger than upper class man.
~ even if you're popular and know everyone, or an outcast and know nobody... don't try to be better than the kids above you. Every class gossips. I'm not even kidding, you will be a target of everyone. Everyone will have their eyes and ears on high alert around you. Don't be the unlikeable freshman that nobody likes. People will put you in your place quick. Nobody is afraid to humble a freshie.
7. Freedom doesn't mean freewill.
~ there are still rules set in place. my HS allows us to have our phones out EVERYWHERE we go, and lets us go pretty much anywhere during break. But if we trash the school or start any sort of scene we will have that taken away from us. Don't act like you have no common sense. There is a time and place for everything, learn to control yourself.
8. Set up goals and challenges for the school year!
~ This is sooo important. You should always set goals before the school year! (EX:) I set goals for myself to go to bed at a reasonable time, and to get better grades than the years previous. And i worked HARD to fulfill these, and in the end i accomplished them. But, i did have times where i would mess up! I would stay up long nights and not be able to pay attention the next day. Which affected my grades. It's okay to have those days! Just remind yourself what you're working towards.
9. Take care of your Mental Health.
~ My mental health was flushed down the drain. I was constantly judged and made fun of. But i have learned to accept it. I NEVER want to go back to how i felt freshman year. Which is why my goal for sophomore year is to be more careful of my mental health and cutting out any negativity. The upperclassman will definitely judge you... because they think it's funny. Don't let their immaturity get in the way of your education. Take care of yourself.
10. Have fun.
~ Don't forget about what i've noted previously, but also don't keep yourself reserved. Start a bond with teachers and students, join any extracurricular's, and enjoy it. Freshman year will go by so fast that you one blink and you're in a cap and gown. Make the best of it.
I hope this helped any freshman who are starting school soon or close to it. High School is scary, but you WILL get used to it.
