Hey everyone!
If it isn't too much trouble, I could really use your help.
My boyfriend, William H., has been struggling with chronic pain and urgently needs a new wheelchair to improve his quality of life. We’ve started a GoFundMe to raise $140 to get him the help he needs. Any donation, big or small, would mean the world to us. Please share this story to spread the word.
Thank you so much for your support!

I definitely am! Please feel free to send any and all asks!
I feel like writeblr people aren't sending asks to each other as much after that kerfuffle over whether asks need to be individual to a person's projects to count as "supporting" writeblr. Please reblog if you are happy to receive ANY asks, even if it's the same question other people get! I KNOW I AM!

Here's to the people who can't get the words on the page. The people who are too tired after all life throws at them to write. The people who are blocked. The people who are burnt out. The people who can't write because of physical or mental illnesses. The people who don't know why they can't write. And the people struggling with all those other things that get in the way of writing and make it seem or be impossible.
You're still a writer, you're still an artist. And you matter. This world is better since you're in it. Thank you for wanting to write, even if you can't right now. I hope you and your words find each other soon.

~•○{Questions}○•~
Tumblr media
In this section, I think I'm going to answer questions that may come up on the topic of writing, being an author, etc. If I get any questions in Asks, I'll likely respond to them in this section as well!
Tumblr media
Where Do You Get Your Ideas?
This is a loaded question and one that there is no wrong answer to. It all depends on the person and their way of writing.
For me, I tend to get my ideas through observation of what's going on around me at the time.
For example, you may have noticed the main event of my WIP novel - Final Moments of Hope - is a deadly disease foing around. When did I start writing this novel? November of 2020. Can we then easily determine what inspired this novel? Yes, Covid.
That's not the only example, though! Most of the time, they aren't as identifiable by other people, either. Another WIP novel that I'm writing (that has yet to be given even a temporary title), is inspired by a book that I read and enjoyed years back. Did I realize that's what was going on at the time? Of course not. It was only once I read through things that I realized, "hey, I think I used --- as inspiration here".
That's another thing, too. There is no harm in using something as inspiration, it just shouldn't be a carbon copy. Be sure to make things your own even if there is inspiration behind something.
Other ideas may be inspired by something not-so-obvious!
An example of this may be that another one of my WIP novels (also not given a title yet) is based around some of my own personal feelings at the time.
You could even give light to the fact that I come up with names for characters 90% of the time by looking at objects around me and combining the letters from various objects to create a name that both looks and sounds neat. Or I toy with the spelling of generic names to make them look or sound more unique/cool. (Like my own name - I didn't like the look of the generic spelling of Jason and instead decided to go through spellings until I settled on what I though fit me best ~ Jaysyn).
There are also times where I develop a character as an OC first wayyyy before I create a story, and then I become so invested in their overall life story and background that I decide to turn it into a novel. This is what happened with Nick Riviera in The Life of a Scientist. I developed Nick as a character years before I started to write his official story, and then when I got so invested in his character, I started to write it in the style of an official novel.
Inspiration of ideas in a general sense can come from anywhere. A lot of the time, for me, it comes from observation of my special interests, events going on around me, events revolving around other people's lives, or even other stories that I personally took a liking to.
You just have to find the things that make your brain spark. It may take time, but be patient with yourself because that is a key factor in all aspects of writing.
Tumblr media
Now that you know my secrets, please don't hesitate to ask more questions of ask for clarification or focus on a particular topic, even if it was already briefly mentioned! I enjoy answering anything ♡
Also, feel free to mention where you get some of your ideas from! I always find it fascinating to see how people differ in these ways.

•~●Brief Storytime●~•
Tumblr media
You know, I surprised myself the other day when I wrote a long piece detailing the emotions of one of my characters, Matsuda Pearson, in the period of losing his husband. In the moment, I was just writing - it was flowing beautifully, and I couldn't stop until it was over.
When it finally was and I re-read it, I couldn't help but feel a sense of familiarity and accomplishment. Not only that, but I felt a sort of warmth. I felt myself, something I haven't felt in a writer's context in quite some time. It gave me hope and confirmation that I do still have it in me to do! I can still do this, and I can do this more!
I want to share with you the very excerpt of text that I wrote that gave me this sense of self back, if you will.
TWs:
Death of a spouse
Grief and loss depiction
Depression
Physical aggression?
Blood
Physical injury
(For context, Matsuda,, ended his husband the day previous and has beyond regret, remorse, and guilt. There was also reason behind his act, but that's too much to get into hbdhdh. This is not cannon to his character, by the way. Also - Charles, Matsuda's husband, belongs to @first-frost-fallen-snow).
Tumblr media
"Yeah.." Matsuda frowns and heads outside, putting his hands in his pockets as he starts walking. As he walks in the silence of the evening with the sun setting below the horizon soon, he gets the opportunity to think about the events that took place. Tears start to roll down his cheeks as the scene replays in his mind over and over and over. He could hear Charles's voice in his head. 'You never loved me... did you...?' He picks up his pace, just as his breaths begin to pick up. How could he do this to his husband? The man he loved the most... he betrayed him when he was scared of being betrayed the most. What was he thinking? His heart was racing, and soon so was he, sprinting now as the thoughts clouded his mind. He had no sense of direction, no sense of where he wanted to go, or what he wanted to do. He just needed to run. He ran and ran and ran until he physically could not anymore, collapsing in a field beneath a tree. He pants heavily there on his hands and knees, reaching into his hair and once again feeling utterly insane. He shakily gets to his feet, and his demeanor changes. He now felt pent-up anger, mostly toward himself, though he took it out on the closest thing to him. Balling his hands into fists, he punches, hits, and kicks at the tree before him, letting out a few anguished screams. He didn't stop until his hands were bloodied and hurt so much that he was unable to move them. It was only then that he slumped down against the tree, now feeling just... empty.

Tumblr media
What I'm about to share is the Introduction to one of the novels I'm working on - Final Moments of Hope.
Please note that this is my original work. It is under no circumstances to be used for any purpose - especially without my permission.
Also, take into consideration that I began writing this in November of 2020. I will eventually need to make changes to the writing, but this is the joy of first drafts.
Possible TWs:
Religion
Illness
Thank you, and I hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
72 hours left. “Grab me the Robitussin, Axter.”  I reached over onto the bedside table and grabbed a sticky medicine bottle. I quickly placed it in Micah’s hand. He didn’t even turn to look at me when he took it, he just extended his hand back to me and never took his eyes off of the hacking Ezra.  “If it’s got Ez, it’ll get us too.”  He turns his head to face me.  “We’ve come this far, this long, don’t you dare be giving up on yourself now.”  He stared at me hard for another couple of moments before turning his attention back to Ezra.  I watched him as he poured the medicine into the curve of a spoon, his hand shaking so much that some of the medicine spilled over the edge of it.  “Open your mouth, Ez.”  As soon as Micah made his request, Ezra completed it, and Micah shoved the spoon into his mouth, Ezra’s mouth closing in on it shortly after. Micah took the spoon out of his mouth slowly and poured another spoonful and served it to him. This action repeated a total of two times after the second spoonful.  “God, help Ezra…”  Micah gently moved a hand across Ezra’s forehead before turning towards Jetta.  “Jet, you can’t trust in God for everything.”
Tumblr media
Reading through the introduction, I can already see multiple places where improvement could be made. Nonetheless, I hope it at least caught some intrigue!
Please do let me know if you'd like to read written chapters of this novel! It's one of my favorite WIPs.

I think this is incredible information to take in.
A Word of Advice About Critique Groups, Beta Readers, and Other Peer-Based Feedback on Your Writing
In my time as a professional editor, I've have many writers come to me with stories they've been trying to improve based on suggestions from critique groups, beta readers, or other non-professional feedback sources (friends, family, etc.). The writers are often frustrated because they don't agree with the feedback, they can't make sense of the comments they've gotten, or they've tried their best to implement the suggestions but now they've made a big mess of things and don't know where to go from here.
If this happens to you, you're not alone. Here's the deal.
Readers and beginning writers are great at sniffing out problems, but they can be terrible at recommending solutions. For that reason, critique groups can be a disastrous place for beginning writers to get advice.
Here's a good metaphor. Imagine you don’t know the first thing about cars. Someone tells you, “There’s oil leaking onto the driveway. You should cover the car with a giant garbage bag.” Alarmed, you oblige, only to be told the next day that “now the car smells like burning plastic and I can’t see out the windows.”
A mechanic would’ve listened to the critic’s complaint and come up with their own solution to the leaking oil, ignoring the amateur’s ridiculous idea, because they know how to fix cars and can use their skills to investigate symptoms and find the correct solution.
Critique groups actually aren’t bad places for experienced writers, because they can listen to the criticism, interpret it, and come up with their own remedies to the problems readers are complaining about. Beginning writers, on the other hand, can end up digging themselves into a deeper hole.
There's a great Neil Gaiman quote about this very conundrum:
Remember: when people tell you something’s wrong or doesn’t work for them, they are almost always right. When they tell you exactly what they think is wrong and how to fix it, they are almost always wrong.
So what to do?
First, try to investigate the reader's complaint and come up with your own solution, instead of taking their solution to the problem. Sometimes, in the end, the reader's solution was exactly right, which is lovely, but don't count on it. Do your own detective work.
Second, take everything you hear with a huge grain of salt, and run the numbers. Are 9 out of 10 readers complaining about your rushed ending? It's probably worth investigating. Does nobody have an issue with your abrasive antagonist except your cozy mystery-loving uncle? Then you might not need to worry about it.
Third, give everything you hear a gut check. Does the criticism, while painful, ring true? Or does it seem really off-base to you? Let the feedback sit for a week or so while you chill out. You might find you're less sensitive and open to what's been said after a little more time has passed.
Lastly, consider getting professional feedback on your writing. Part of my job as an editor is to listen to previous feedback the writer has gotten, figure out whether the readers were tracking the scent of legitimate problems, and offer the writer more coherent solutions. Of course, some professional editors aren't very good at this, just like some non-professional readers are amazing at it, so hiring someone isn't a guarantee. But editors usually have more experience taking a look under the hood and giving writers sound mechanical advice about their work, rather than spouting ideas off the top of their head that only add to the writer's confusion.
Hope this helps!

~♤~Things to Avoid in Your Writing~♤~
Tumblr media
Make it Your Own, but...
◇ Try to keep an eye out for certain factors that have a tendency to cause a story to drag on
◇ If a story drags on and doesn't capture the reader's attention, then it isn't going to gain the light and recognition it deserves
◇ Try to keep the following in mind when it comes to factors you should avoid in your writing
◇ Look out for these because they can happen without you even realizing more often than not
◇ I recommend going through and re-reading your chapters and/or short stories once you finish them; this allows you to catch errors or alter portions that may need it
Tumblr media
Look For...
Over-detailing
Plagerism
Long descriptions
Plotholes
Flat characters
Poorly-written cliffhangers
Common word use
Difficult vocabulary
Slow starts
Unnecessary chapters
Unnecessary details
Unnecessary events
Excessive repetition
Rushed plots and/or events
Stereotypes
Forced story aspects
Grammatical errors
Overused tropes
Clichés
Poorly-written dialogue
Poorly-written characters
Poor character development
Boring story aspects
Predictability
Lack of originality
Switching tenses
Switching points of view
Uninteresting characters, plots, etc.
Miscommunication
Slow or overall bad story pacing
Unnecessary filler
Poorly-written smut
Projection
Effortless writing
Too many plot points
Cringe characters
Weak plot executions
Misrepresentation
Inaccuracies
Cover art originality
Unrelateable characters and/or events
Non-existent character arcs
Sentence structure and variety
Lack of build-up or high stakes
Anti-climactic moments
Inability to leave an impression
Tumblr media
I can certainly create more in-depth posts about any of the above listed if more clarification is needed or wanted. There certainly is a lot to touch on!

》▪︎ Then vs. Now ▪︎《
Tumblr media
Welcome to Then vs. Now! In this category of postings, I will include two snippets of my writing from my own original stories. The first will be the original - aka the "then." The second will be the revised - aka the "now."
The general idea is to identify improvement in my current writing from the original writing - hence the "then vs. now!" I hope you find joy in reading it as much as I found joy in writing it.
Tumblr media
Today's snippets come from my original story, The Life of a Scientist. I'll include the novel's overall description below:
"Everybody has a story. This story belongs to the one and only Nicholas Riviera. Travel with him on his journey of self-discovery as well as developing his his career as a scientist and raising four children!" - Written in 2020 (I could probably write a better one now if I tried. I did tweek the original a little.)
Tumblr media
Original - 21 November 2020
From Chapter One - The Beginning
"Nicholas hopped up from the couch that he had been spending the last two hours sitting on, watching eagerly through the window for his parents to pull in with his new baby brother. He had been being babysat by his Aunt Larissa ever since his father had called to tell her that Clara was going into labor and needed to head to the hospital ASAP. Percy wanted to be right beside his wife the entire time the action was going down, and he didn't want Nicholas left alone, even if he was in a doctor's supervision. Nick was only three years old at the time, after all."
Tumblr media
Revised - 28 March 2024
From Chapter One - The Beginning
"For the past two hours, Nicholas had been staring intensely out the large bay window in his living room - the one that overlooked his driveway, which was currently lacking anything worth his interest. His Aunt Larissa had been looking after him ever since his father had called two nights ago to deliver the news that Clara was going into labor. Nick wanted desperately to accompany his parents to the hospital so that he could meet his baby brother the moment he was fresh from the womb, but Percy and Clara both agreed weeks ago that it would be far too stressful to keep track of a three-year-old in the midst of the hospital chaos."
Tumblr media
◇ The ultimate goal with this category is to not only help myself realize that I have grown as a writer but to help other young writers realize that with practice, there can be significant improvement!
◇ It isn't easy. You may never feel that your writing can be improved upon. However, if you actively work toward achievement, you can pursue anything.
◇ One of the greatest pieces of advice I received from a teacher of mine was:
"Practice doesn't make you perfect. Practice makes you better."

Tips for New Writers
Tumblr media
Do Not Stress
◇ There is often a line that I need to repeat to myself as a writer:
Writing is supposed to be fun.
◇ If you stress yourself out over it, then the fun aspect of it disappears; it will seem more like work and a hassle than it does a fun hobby or activity.
◇ Of course, you can also make writing a part of your career, but then then, it shouldn't cause you an over-amount of stress.
Even as a career, writing should be fun.
◇ Listen to yourself. Set goals, but stay in tune with yourself as well.
◇ If you have a goal to write xxx by xxx date, then I certainly encourage you to meet that! However, life happens - things become stressful naturally sometimes.
◇ Don't add more stress by trying to meet a "deadline."
Tumblr media
Be Kind to Yourself
◇ Writing may be fun, but can 100% be difficult as well.
◇ Say it with me:
"Things are not always going to turn out the way you originally planned them to."
You will need to take detours.
◇ If you don't get something right the first time, don't beat yourself up about it.
◇ You are not any less of an incredible writer if you make a mistake; all of the best authors, poets, creative writers, etc. have made mistakes!
◇ The best thing you can do is take a step back, learn from it, and try again.
◇ Shakespeare didn't become successful and famous overnight.

Tips for New Writers
Tumblr media
Read
◇ Reading generally is going to help strengthen your writing a significant amount.
Books
Poems
Short Stories
Novels
Magazines
Etc.
◇ The thing that will be most beneficial to you is going to be if you read what you want to write.
◇ By reading what you aim to write, you will gain a better understanding of the genre or piece's formating, writing styles, and much more.
◇ This doesn't mean copy exactly what you read in your own writing; it simply means: read, analyze, gain ideas, make them your own.
Tumblr media
Experience Inspiration
◇ There are plenty of places to experience inspiration.
◇ As mentioned previously, reading through works that relate back to what you plan to write gives you plenty of inspiration for your own writing, whether it be:
Plotlines
Character Development
Writing Styles
Etc.
◇ A lot of the time, inspiration requires a clear - or at least semi-clear - mind.
◇ Inspiration can show up in everyday life experiences as well! It could show up when you:
Go out on a walk
Hold a get-together with friends and/or family
Work
Lay down and stare at the ceiling
And many more scenarios
Honestly, I would love to hear where some of you get your inspiration from!
