I just really love the ao3 tag Dead Dove: Do Not Eat. It's a meme, from a show, with no meaning except the meme meaning, the specific frame of reference, the exact expression needed for 'Hey, look at those tags again; is this Really your thing? I marked it and everything.' And I love that. It's colloquial and perfect and I love it. I don't have anyone else who reads enough fanfic to relate to my love right now. So I'm messaging you. In the hope that it brings you breif escapism. From the hordes.

I crack up whenever I see that tag, it’s such a good reference but also just a really great way of saying “I tagged this, you know what you’re getting yourself in for here”. And then invariably there’s still always someone surprised in the comments lol

imo the best way to interpret those “real people don’t do x” writing advice posts is “most people don’t do x, so if a character does x, it should be a distinguishing trait.” human behavior is infinitely varied; for any x, there are real people who do x. we can’t make absolute statements. we can, however, make probabilistic ones.

for example, most people don’t address each other by name in the middle of a casual conversation. if all your characters do that, your dialogue will sound stilted and unnatural. but if just one character does that, then it tells us something about that character.

So I didn’t say anything because I wanted to fully enjoy it first, but a couple of weeks ago I finally got the @inkedfairytales zine!!

First of all, I love the overall design. The black, white and gold theme truly gives off that lovely fairy tale vibe. All of the artworks included have a unique style and are super pretty! From dark versions to fun and modern ones, it’s great to see so many different interpretations and even getting to know tales I had never heard of. (Random fact: I love the tale of the firebird, and @dejavidetc ’s piece kind reminded me of The Great Gatsby, which is great because I love that too??).

And don’t even get me started with the short stories. Beautiful retellings AND plottwists that had me like ’?? I thought this fairytale didn’t go like this?? THIS IS BETTER??’. I quite enjoyed both the modern (crazy scientists, space, TARDIGRADES!) and the more fantasy-like stories (special kudos to @willfulabyss and @criticallaughter because their stories got me hooked from the first sentence and I’m more into that fantasy horror stuff). Honestly, all of you have distinct and beautiful styles. Please keep writing (-love from an amateur writer herself).

In conclusion, I really liked the Inked Fairy Tales zine. It’s a fantastic work, everyone. Thank you for bringing it to life!!

idk I just love how we Young People Today use ~improper~ punctuation/grammar in actually really defined ways to express tone without having to explicitly state tone like that’s just really fucking cool, like

now that ao3 as a whole is a hugo nominee and has reminded us all that it is an incredibly well-designed, excellently maintained project with an archival system that is the envy of many librarians etc, it is a great time to remember that:

ao3 is run entirely by volunteers 

there are no ads or monetization at all to bother site users

and also the site works on strict guidelines to prevent us from being sued to bankruptcy etc

we use this amazing site for FREE

server space is EXPENSIVE and ao3 needs A LOT OF IT

the otw (which is the non-profit that runs ao3) spring donation drive is happening right now!

donations to the drive go to ao3 AND other projects run by otw

so if you use ao3 and appreciate all the hard work being done to keep it running, GO DONATE.
