Hello, I'm Andrew Leduc And Welcome To Duke Reviews TV, Where Today We're Finishing Our Look At The Orville Season 1, By Watching The Season Finale, Mad Idoltry...

This Episode Sees Kelly leading a shuttle team that crashes on a suddenly appearing planet with a Bronze Age society. After leaving, the crew discovers that the planet phases in to the universe for a short period every 11 days as 700 years passes on the planet.

They discover that their first visit has resulted in a religion that worships Kelly Grayson and has since grown into a theocracy  resembling Earth's middle ages.

Ozawa reprimands Mercer for omitting mention of the contamination, and orders no further contact with the planet. But Mercer and Grayson defy this order And return to the planet to Try To reveal the truth to the society's religious leader...

And I Know What People Are Thinking "But Duke, We're Not As Dumb As You Think We Are, We Can Figure That Out For Ourselves" Yeah, But If They're Trying To Tell A Cohesive Story (Which They Are), There Should Be No Loopholes Whatsoever, Show Don't Tell...

Anyway, Ed And Kelly Contact Lady Shiva About The Planet And She Tells Them To Stay In Orbit Another 72 Hours To Continue Scanning The Planet And If They Still Have No Clue What They're Dealing With By Then, They'll Send A Science Vessel To Take Over...

Asking Why Ed Didn't Tell Ozawa About The Child, He Tells Her That All She Did Was Help A Kid With A Wound Which Couldn't Have Caused Much Damage Much Less (What They Call) "Cultural Contamination"

Also I Love It When Ed Mentions That Union Policy Would Have Had Kelly Leave That Kid To Die, But First Off, The Kid Wasn't Seriously Injured, And 2, Kelly Didn't Really Need To Heal Her, A Band-Aid Could Have Made Her Feel Better For All We Know...

If She Was Being Attacked By A Wild Animal And She Was Dying From Her Wounds It Would Have Been A Different Story But This...This Was Not Worth Kelly Exposing Herself To A Kid And Using Technologically Advanced Machinery To Heal A Kid That Just Got A Cut On Her Forehead...

Leading Me Now To Ask One Question...

Anyway, 12 Hours Pass And They Still Got Nothing On The Planet, However, When The Planet Disappears As Quickly As It Appeared, Issac Has A Theory That The Planet Is Locked In A Multiphasic Orbit Which Means The Planet's Orbit Is Locked Between 2 Universes...

This Leaves Them With 1 Option Wait For The Planet To Re-Enter Their Universe In 11 Days, Giving Kelly And Ed Time To Go On Their Date Which Rather Well As The 2 End Up Kissing..

But That Doesn't Stop The Writers Of This Show From Making A Dumb Decision With Those 2 Later...

A Few Days Later, The Planet Reappears With "Radical Alterations" Including Much More Extensive Architecture And An Increase In Life Forms,Leading Ed And Kelly To Take An Away Team Comprised Of Gordon, Lamar And Alara Down To The Planet...

Once On The Planet They Discover That The Civilization Has Indeed Evolved Into A 14th Century City, This Leads Issac (On The Ship) To Conclude That Everytime The Planet Moves Out Of Their Universe And Into The Other It Causes A Time Acceleration For The Inhabitants...

In Other Words, While It's Been 11 Days To Them, For The Planet It's Been 700 Years...

They Find Some Clothes To Blend In At A Nearby Cabin But When They're Spotted By The Farmer Who Owns The Cabin, They Try To Make A Run For It Only For The Farmer To Come Out To Ask Kelly To Bless Her Son...

With Ed Not Liking The Look Of That, They Get Dressed Only To Come Across People Who Have Been Crucified While Walking Toward Town, Talking With A Man Who's Come To Get The Bodies, Ed Asks Why These People Were Killed Only To Discover That They Were Killed For Forsaking The Word Of "Kelly"

Returning To The Ship, They Tell Ozawa What Happened And She's Pretty Pissed That Ed Left It Out Of His Prior Report But Despite Him Saying That He Didn't Think It Was Of Consequence She Puts A Reprimand On His File And They're Not To Return To The Surface Until They Come To Them So Speak..

Rightfully Upset That People Are Being Killed In Her Name, She Tells Ed She Wants To Be Alone But Later, Ed Says Screw That, We're Going Back Down To The Planet...

Having 31 Minutes Until The Planet Phases Out Of Their Universe Again, They Enter The Church Of Kelly To Talk With The Leader Of The Village Named The Valondis And Tell Him Everything..

Of Course, He Doesn't Believe Kelly At First But After Showing Him The Device That Healed The Girl And How To Use It, He Starts Believing Their Story That Kelly Is Not A God...

But Unfortunatly One Of Valondis' Followers Kills Him To Keep The Word Of Kelly Going Because He's Afraid That In Revealing The Truth, Their Ability To Govern May Become Compromised And It

So, When The Planet Re-Enters Their Universe, They Still Believe That Kelly Is Their God...

Wondering What The Hell Happened Down There, Kelly Believes There Wasn't Enough Time To Convince Everyone That She Wasn't A God So, She Suggests Remaining On The Planet After It Leaves The Universe In An Effort To Convince Them...

But With Ed Refusing Such An Idea As Kelly Would Die And/Or They'd Probably Think She Was Insane And Lock Her Up, Which Leads Issac To Suggest That He Remain On The Planet As His Construct Is Capable Of Enduring For Millions Of Years And He Doesn't Process The Passage Of Time Like They Do...

So, With Gordon Taking Issac Down To The Planet And Returning To The Ship Afterwards, The Planet Disappears, Fast Forward 11 Days And They Now Far More Advanced Than Before And A Ship Is Entering Their Orbit...

With The Ship Asking Permission To Come Aboard, They Grant Permission Leading To 2 Beings (1 Male And 1 Female) Beaming Aboard With Issac To Return Him...

Asking Isaac How He Convinced Them Kelly Wasn't A God, He Actually Tells Them, He Didn't Have To Do Anything, They Figured It Out On Their Own, Simply Stating It's All Apart Of Evolution She In Turn Did Not Poison Their Culture Cause It Flourished...

Oh, And I Love How They Say That Once They Evolve Past Them, They'd Be Interested Studying Them As The Orville Studied Them Either Way That'll Come Back In A Later Season, Though I Don't See Any Of These Guys Evolving Into That Goth Chick From Victorious Anytime Soon...

And I Know Elizabeth Gillies Has Done More Since Then But I'm Sorry It's Just The Way I've Always Seen Her, I Feel The Same Way With Ariana Grande, She'll Always Be That Brainless Ditz, Cat

And What Better Way To End This Episode Than With Kelly Permanantly Ending Her Relationship With Ed Because She Believes That If They Were It Would Jeopardize His Command, His Operation Of The Ship And Their Friendship If They Were Together...

And Yeah, I Sadly Say That Because They Haven't Gotten Back Together Since And I Highly Doubt They Ever Will...

"But Duke, The Will They/Won't They? Relationship Is So Old We're Tired Of It!"

Oh, Well, I Want To See These 2 Get Together, If You Don't Like It Then Don't Watch The Show Especially If You're Tired Of The Same Old Storylines...

"But Duke, Kelly's Reasoning Makes Perfect Sense In Star Trek Logic..."

If We Were Talking Star Trek Logic About Becoming Emotionally Compromised In The Line Of Duty, Then They Wouldn't Let A Person Who Is Clearly Emotionally Compromised Over Losing A Loved One On Board Their Freaking Ship In Season 3!

And If They Can Allow A Person Like That On Their Vessel Then By Star Trek Logic, There's No Reason Why Kelly And Ed Can't Be Together!

Good Episode But In Retrospective The Ending Sucks!

I Do Like The Idea Of Early First Contact Gone Wrong But Despite The Story Itself Being Good The Ending Is Horrible When In The Long Run, The Will They/Won't They Relationship Goes Absolutely Nowhere, But Aside From That, I Say See It...

This Leads Mercer To find a new chief engineer. Although Yaphit is next in line for the position, Cmdr. Grayson discovers that LaMarr has been concealing his intellectual gifts, stemming from his wanting to be accepted by his childhood peers while growing up. Grayson Attempts convince Mercer to assign LaMarr to lead an engineering team assignment in order to evaluate him as a candidate...

But As That's Going On a thief with a cache of plasma rifles stolen from the Krill. He is killed when he passes into a region Of 2 Dimensional Space. To elude the Krill pursuers, the Orville takes refuge in that region.

I See Halsey's Perspective That Deciding Who Is To Be Captains Of Ships Is Their Buisness And It Was Kelly's Place Whether To Tell Him Or Not.

But In The Time He's Been In That Chair Ed's Proven Himself To Be A Worthy Captain In Their Eyes So He Should Not Feel Guilty Or Be Embarrassed On This...

But I Also See It From Ed's Perspective As Well, And I Would Be Embarrassed Too If My Ex-Girlfriend Or My Mother Had To Go To Bat For Me To Be Captain Of A Ship And I Too Would Question If I Was Really Worthy Or Not...

So, There's No Right Or Wrong Choice In This Matter...

Calling Lamar To Her Office, Kelly Shows Him His File And Asks Why He Never Told Anyone About How Smart He Really Was And It Turns Out That He Just Wanted To Live The Simple Life And Kelly Understands That To A Degree...

But She Still Places Lamar In Charge Of The Science And Engineering Task Force That's Assigned To Investigate The Anomaly As She Doesn't Want Lamar To Leave His Gifts Untapped Without Even Trying Them...

Meanwhile, Back On The Bridge, Bortus Tells Ed About A Small Ship Filled With Horbalak Smugglers That's Headed Toward The Anomaly...

However When They Hail Them, They Refuse To Turn Back As They Don't Like The Union And The Anomaly Isn't Showing Up On Their Scanners...

So Yeah, The Ship Goes Into The Anomaly For A Second And Goes Out On The Other Side With No Life Signs...

Giving Bortus Command, Ed Takes A Shuttle With Kelly, Claire And Alara To The Small Horbalak Ship Only To Find The Pilot And It's Crew All Dead...

And It Only Gets Worse When They Discover That The Horbalaks Were Smuggling Krill Plasma Rifles, Meaning That Whoever They Stole Them From Is Probably On Their Way To Get Them Back...

But Once They All Get Back To The Ship, Kelly And Ed Continue Talking About Kelly Talking To Halsey About Giving Him Command Of The Orville...

After That, Ed Meets With Yaphit, Who's Peeved He's Not In Command Of The Science Team Instead Of John Which Leads Ed To Tell Him The Truth That Him And Kelly Feel That Lamar Deserves To Be In The Running For Chief Engineer, Which Causes Yaphit To Cry Racist At Ed..

Ok, Now We're Getting Somewhere, Lamar Starts His New Job Heading The Science And Engineering Task Force With The Help Of Issac Who Agrees That He's Incapable To Perform His Assigned Duties...

But Then Lamar Notices That The Anomaly Isn't A Pothole But A Doorway Leading To A Pocket Of 2 Dimensional Space Which Hasn't Been Discovered Before...

With Kelly Asking What Happened To The Horbalak Vessel, Issac Tells Them That When It Crossed Over, It Momentarily Phased From 3 Dimensions Into 2, So When The Horbalak Ship Was Squeezed Flat, The Living Protien Cells Inside The Crew's Bodies Died Causing The Cells In Their Bodies To Die As Well...

But Before They Figure Out A Way Inside Without Dying, They Get A Call Saying 3 Krill Ships Are Approaching But, Luckily Lamar Has A Plan To Hide From The Krill...

Using The Ship's Field Generator, They Might Be Able To Create A Quantum Bubble Around The Ship Which In Theory, Could Allow Them To Go Through The Doorway Safely With No Harm To Anyone Until The Krill Are Gone...

With Isaac Saying That Lamar's Theory Is Sound, They Tell Lamar To Head Down To Engineering And Get It Done With Issac's Help...

With The Krill Ship's Closing In, They Activate The Quantum Bubble And Head Into The Anomaly To Find A Rainbow Tron Grid Like World (That's As Best As I Can Describe It) Which Causes The Ship To Appear Like It's Sailing On Water...

Telling Issac To Get Every Bit Of Data They Can Get From The Anomaly While They Wait A Few Hours Until The Krill Ships Leave, Ed Heads Toward The Mess Hall Only For Kelly To Join Him To Say That He's Being A Prideful Jerk About Her Helping Him Become Captain..

As No One Does Anything Really Alone As We Have People Who Help Us Along The Way Whether We Know About It Or Not...

And The Reason He's A Good Captain Is That He's Great At Seeing All Sides Of A Problem

But Despite Knowing What She Did Came From A Good Place, It's Just Something Ed Has To Work Out Alone...

Suddenly, Everything Goes To Hell And The Quantum Bubble Fails Due To Inverse Polarization Of The Bubble Itself, Luckily Though Issac Fixes The Problem Temporarily As The Quantum Bubble Is Still Deteriorating And They Have 21 Minutes To Get Out Of There Before The Bubble Collapses...

But That's Only The Good News, The Bad News Is Not Only Are The Engines Now Dead (Due To Exposure To 2 Dimensional Space) But The Anomaly Is Closed Meaning They're Trapped...

But Another Quantum Fluctuation Has Opened Up 4,000 Kilometers Away So, If They Can Use A Shuttle To Tow The Orville To The Fluctuation With A Beefed Up Tractor Beam They Might Be Able To Get Out...

So, Creating A Stable Quantum Bubble Inside The Shuttle, Ed And Lamar Pilot The Shuttle And Use A Combination Of A Spacial Conduit And A Tractor Beam To Pull The Ship Out...

We Get A Moment Between Ed And Lamar Where Lamar Admits That At The Colony Where He's From People Didn't Trust Anyone Who Was Smarter Than They Were So He Hid His Smarts To Pretty Much Fit In...

Either Way, Ed Tells Him That Kelly Was Right About Him And That He Wants Lamar To Be The Ship's New Chief Engineer...

However, When The Quantum Bubble Temporarily Falls On Their Shuttle, Ed Decides To Take The Shuttle To Quantum Speed To Get Not Only The Shuttle But The Ship Out Of 2 Dimensional Space...

And...Both Ships Make It Out Safely Crew And All...

Once They Return To The Ship, Ed Visits Kelly To Apologize For His Behavior Stating That He Acted Like A Whiny Brat Instead Of Just Saying Thank You For Putting Him Where He Is

Well, To Put It Bluntly, Ed, Someone Else From Season 3 Is Much More Of A Whiny Brat Than You Were In This Situation...

And So The Episode Ends With Ed Kissing Kelly On The Cheek, And Lamar Being Promoted To Chief Engineer...

And That's New Dimensions And It's Ok...

It's Not The Best Episode Storywise, But The Visual Effects Were Pretty Cool And I Did Enjoy The Few Scenes That Norm McDonald Was In, But For What It's Worth I Can't Say If It's A Good Episode Or A Bad Episode, It's More In The Middle, So, This Is One, I'm Gonna Have To Say To See For Yourself And Make Your Own Decision On It...

In Fact It Goes So Bad To The Point, That The Only One Who May Be Able To Stop This Farce Of A Tribunal, Is A Moclan Female, So, Contacting Isaac On Board The Orville, He Does A Planetwide Scan And Manages To Find A Moclan Female In The Mountains...

Her Name Is Haveena (Who We Will Be Seeing Again Not Only In Season 2 But Season 3) And She Is Not Only A Female But She Is Moclus' Best Poet...

Yeah, All Through The Last Couple Of Scenes, The Moclans (Including Bortus) Have Been Quoting Poetry From A Moclan Writer Named Gondus Elder, And It Turns Out That Haveena Is Gondus Elder, She's Just Been Using A Surname All Her Life...

The Moclans Are So Bigoted And So Anti-Feminist, That They Decide That The Procedure Should Happen...

This Decision Not Only Made Me Hate The Moclans But It Made Me Hate The Character Of Klyden For A While (He Would Be Redeemed In My Eyes In Season 3, But Still It Made Me Dislike Him For A While)

And You Want To Know The Worse Part Of This, Bortus Doesn't Break Up With Klyden Because Of This Or The Fact That He Lied To Him Throughout Their Relationship...

Yes, The Moclans Are Like Drax The Destroyer, They Don't Get Emotional Much And They Don't Understand The Concept Of Humor, But Bortus Seemed Pretty Pissed Off When Klyden Told Him He Used To Be A Female And He's Entitled To Feel That Way...

Contacting Sharon Again, Sam Tells Her To Keep An Eye On Walker And Hoskins As Zemo Asks Him If He Would Have Taken The Super Solider Serum If Asked To Sam Tells Him No, Respecting Sam's Answer, Zemo Tells Sam They Need To Kill Karli And Her Acolytes As He Doesn't Want Another Faction Of Gods To Exist..

To Which Sam Is Like Isn't That How Gods Talk And I Have A Couple Of Theories Which I'm Not Going To Go Into Until I See Loki...

Now, Look, I Have Been On Walker's Side Throughout These Reviews Saying That I Was Willing To Give Walker A Chance To Develop And He Does Develop Throughout These Episodes It's Just This Episode And One Part In The Final Episode Where He's All Chevy Chase In National Lampoons Vacation...

I Would Have Compared Him With Tommy Wiseau But He's Not That Horrible...

I Mean It's Obvious, They Meant For This Scene To Be A Dramatic Moment For Walker As Realizes He's Not As Strong As Steve Was But It Just Came Out Funny...

Anyway, After That Scene, Walker Talks With Hoskins Out Of Uniform And He Asks Hoskins The Same Question Zemo Asked Sam About If He Would Take The Super Solider Serum If They Asked Him And Hoskins Is Like Hell, Yeah, From What I Understand It Just Takes The Best Or Worst Parts In A Person And Just Amplifies Those Qualities...

This Has Walker Then Asking Him What Would Happen To Me If I Take It, And Of Course, Hoskins Is Like Dude, You Have Three Medals Of Honor, You're The Best Guy I Know, However, Walker Says To Him Yeah, We Did But In Order To Get Those Medals We Also Had To Do Some Bad Things...

Meanwhile, Karli Contacts Sam's Sister And Tells Her To Give Sam A Message For Her Or She'll Find Her And Kill Her Family, With Sam Worried About Her Sister And Nephews, He Tells Her To Get Somewhere Safe And Use Cash Only...

Texting Karli, She Tells Sam To Meet Her At The Rooftop Above The North Plaza And To Come Alone But Bucky Doesn't Trust Her So, He Goes With....

Though Karli Says She Never Would Have Hurt Sam's Sister And Doesn't Want To Hurt Him, She Asks Sam To Either Join Her Or Let Her Go...

But Before Sam Can Answer, Sharon Calls Saying That Walker Has Found Them Which Leads To Hoskins Getting Captured And Breaking Free, It Being Revealed To Us That Walker Most Likely Took The Super Solider Serum And A Fight Where It's Sam, Bucky, Hoskins And Walker Vs The Flags Smashers...

Yeah, That's The Type Of Thing You Would See In Mortal Kombat In Fact, It's So Horrible That That's Where The Episode Stops And We Get No Music During The Credits Whatsoever, Marvel Is Just Like You Sit There And Think About It!

To Which After Much Labor, Naigel Was Able To Isolate The Necessary Compounds In His Blood To Recreate It But Before He Could Get It Perfected, He Turned To Dust Thanks To Our Friend, Thanos...

Meanwhile In Lithuania, Karli And The Flags Smashers Blow Up A GRC Supply Depot With People Inside It In An Effort To Get Their Message Out Further, While Back In The States, Walker And Battlestar Find Out Sam And Bucky Were The Last People To See Zemo In Prison Which Leads Them To Believe That They Broke Zemo Out...
