day 14 // tree There are trees that look average, but possess a dark capability to trap the souls of people and animals that die near them. Unable to move themselves, they can project those souls into the carcasses and bones of the dead left near its body, and uses them as vessels to enact its will on earth.

day 13 // scared These birds, SPOOKS, have a very interesting defense mechanism that involves them poofing up, growing sharp appendages and viciously attacking anything that scares them. The problem is, nearly everything scares them. Their transformation is akin to a werewolf, completely shifting their appearance and disposition.

day 12 // worried This specter is known as a SHADE. A Shade can do something very unique, it can steal a persons shadow. A Shade will steal someone's shadow, and slip in as a replacement. Shades begin by causing feelings of worry, then normal anxiety, then crippling and debilitating anxiety. They usually replace the shadows of young people with anxiety, because it is much less likely that they will be noticed or caught. In fact, Shades are rarely ever caught, because they cause a slippery slope from mild worry to life crushing fear, and people usually don't catch on until it's far too late. (This is my first inktober piece featuring an actual human!!)

day 11 // transport These tiny, rodentlike creatures are called TAKES. A Takes body is pitch black, making it almost invisible in the dark. A Take will sneak into a persons room at night and bite their hand. A Take has venom which paralyzes the hand. After the hand has lost feeling, the Take gnaws off the thumb. Then the Take places the thumb in its tiny pack and runs off. No one knows how the Takes make their packs, or even why they steal thumbs. But a Take is never seen without its pack, and expertly transports the stolen thumbs back to its nest.

day 10 // jump Among most monsters, hunting the weak and easy to kill is a staple. This means attacking people who live alone, isolated, and especially those who live on the first floor of buildings. But not the FROGHOPPER. The froghopper can jump up to 10 stories, due to the strength of the muscles in its front legs. A typical froghopper is about six feet long. It's similar to a flea in that it lives off of blood. The froghopper can jump, break into any window it wishes, and suck the blood of those inside. One body usually isn't enough to satiate this beast.

day 9 // broken This spirit manifests itself as a porcelain mask and two porcelain gloves. It is essentially a stalker, picking a target at random and only becoming visible to that person, then it will follow them around until they are driven insane. Once isolated, delusional and paranoid, it consumes its victim. The only way to break free from it is to add another crack to its mask. Since the spirit is incredibly swift, this is almost impossible.

day 8 // rock These creatures are called CRAGS. Crags are camouflaged to look exactly like any stray rock. They eat anything that comes near their mouths. This includes bugs, snails, snakes, lizards, and the occasional human hand.

day 7 // lost This monster, called the TOYBOX, has a particularly interesting and gruesome feeding mechanism. A Toybox is a dark, massive, shifting mass that positions itself behind doors. It finds children who have lost their favorite toys. The Toybox throws out a lure, shaped like the child's favorite toy, and reels children in only to be eaten in the blink of an eye.

day 6 // hidden This is a SNEAK. Sneaks are playful killers, and take joy in hiding. A sneak picks a target and will linger around their house for a week. Sneaks are incredibly fast sprinters. They approach a person, peek out at them, and dart away. Sneaks favorite places to peek out of are open windows, skylights, and over the edges of beds. Sometimes they will spontaneously leave, leaving their target with unresolved paranoia. This, however, is much better than the alternative. No one has EVER seen the bottom half of a Sneaks face and lived.

day 5 // sadness These creatures bring misery wherever they go. Known as Lonely Ones, they feed off of misery. They drift over the bodies of the unconscious and sleeping, especially children, and consume their negativity. In order to assure that they always have a good meal, their presence causes dread in humans. Being near one, even for a few minutes, causes misery. These Lonely Ones are non corporeal, and the only time they have ever been sighted is as a haze with piercing eyes leering out of windows.

day 4 // hungry Some mermaids live in shallows, some live in tropical climates, some live in the cold polar regions... and some live at the bottom of the ocean, where the only hope for a meal is attracting little organisms with an inviting light...

day 3 // collect frankly, I don't know what this is. It has a shallow wooden bowl. And oh, would you look at that. It's full of collected teeth. Oh. Yep. It just stuck some of them right in there. Right in the face. Well, what are you gonna do. Oh, it looks like it's offering you some. It would be pretty rude not to take a tooth. Don't you think?

day 2 // noisy This is a SHRIEK, an appropriately named but non lethal monster. A shriek is a scavenger and a pest, but is clever enough not to have to forge for scraps. This nocturnal little beast sneaks into homes at night and eats what it pleases. It is rarely caught, because a shriek has a complete mastery of sound. It can throw it's voice, and make anxiety enduring sounds to scare people back to bed. If directly caught or exposed to direct light, the shriek emanates a directed SONIC BULLET, at 145 decibels, which can easily induce an instant migraine and disorientation that gives it enough time to escape.

happy inktober !! im using the official prompts, and day 1 was FAST This is a METALCRUSHER. No one knows much about it, and almost no one lives after encountering it. A metalcrusher ranges from 16-20 ft. in length. It's body is almost completely black. It follows cars driving down long roads at night, its bright eyes mimicking headlights. It uses its incredible speed (up to 90 mph) to approach cars, and with unmatched swiftness it opens its massive jaws and consumes cars, and whoever is in them, whole. Happy night driving!!
