hi! i just found your blog and it’s really really great. i know very minimal korean (like hardly any at all) and i’m so lost on where to start. i know how to read the alphabet somewhat but other than that no one really says what to do next. thank you!!

Hiiii :)) It can definitely be a little overwhelming when you first start learning a language so I hope this can help you!

After learning the alphabet, I would recommend doing two things:

LISTEN: I recommend watching dramas, youtube videos, variety shows, or even listening to music to practice listening to the sounds of the language. Honestly, I think this is one thing that helped me the most because it helped my pronunciation a lot. Especially after learning the alphabet, hearing the sounds really reinforces what you’ve already learned. For dramas, youtube, and variety shows, you can watch with subtitles, but make sure you are actively listening and not just focusing on what you’re reading. It is completely okay if you don’t understand anything, but I promise it will really help your pronunciation and listening skills.

GRAMMAR: I recommend learning the bare basics of grammar first. Vocabulary is important but I believe it is more efficient to learn a few vocabulary words here and there as needed to learn new grammar. You should start by learning the basic sentence structure and practice until you are confident. It is this basic structure that will be prevalent throughout all your studies, so it is important to feel fully comfortable with it before moving on. Once you feel confident with the structure, you can move on to learning different sentence endings and new vocabulary.

TTMIK is honestly my favorite resource ever and all their lessons are free. I own all of their books and it was their books/website that I used in the beginning of my Korean language journey. The lessons are straightforward and give structure to self-taught studiers. I can’t recommend them enough!!

Viki is a great place to find dramas and variety shows with English subtitles :))

1 year of fluentlee!!!

hi yall :)))))

i just wanted to say thanks to all of you who have joined me in my journey of learning korean! it’s officially been 1 year since i made this tumblr and honestly, i am so thankful for having this outlet.

last year was a pretty eventful year for me, which included some of my darkest and happiest times. i had started this tumblr in order to give myself a distraction and something to hold myself accountable for when my life felt like it had no purpose. i was hopeful that by sharing my resources and knowledge, i would be able to help others who are learning the korean language just like me. i am thankful to anyone who has ever liked or reblogged any of posts or followed me because it honestly makes my day and has impacted me more than you would ever know.

i also want to share that since my last post, i’ve gotten much better and am happy to say that for the time being, i am no longer depressed. i’ve been working hard on giving myself the care i deserve and am now at a place that i haven’t been at for many years. my next goal is to get back to regularly posting and teaching korean in different ways than i did before.

i am excited for the future and again i just want to say thank you :))))

This post will show you how to change nouns into verbs; if you want to see how to turn verbs into nouns, check out this post. In some cases, not all, nouns can be turned into verbs by simply adding the verb 하다 (to do).

some example words

수영 [swimming] + 하다 = 수영하다 [to swim]

모험 [adventure] + 하다 = 모험하다 [to have an adventure]

여행 [travel; traveling] + 하다 = 여행하다 [to travel]

사랑 [love] + 하다 = 사랑하다 [to love]

공부 [studying] + 하다 = 공부하다 [to study]

도착 [arrival] + 하다 = 도착하다 [to arrive]

운전 [driving] + 하다 = 운전하다 [to drive]

example sentences:

How do you learn/study vocabulary?

generally, i prefer to use flashcards. i like handwriting flashcards because writing vocabulary down helps me remember better; however, i also love quizlet because it gives you different methods to help you remember vocab. another way i like to learn vocab is through american or korean tv shows that have korean subtitles because then i can learn words in daily contexts. for me, having example sentences and seeing how a vocab word is used tends to help me the most when trying to learn them.

i also love to read children’s books in korean. it sounds kinda funny but it’s helpful for learning basic words that you may have otherwise overlooked and practicing your understanding of fairly basic sentences.
