Italian History: 25 Aprile, Festa della Liberazione

Italy’s Liberation Day (Festa della liberazione), also known as the Anniversary of the Liberation (Anniversario della liberazione d'Italia), Anniversary of the Resistance (anniversario della Resistenza), or simply 25 April is a national Italian holiday commemorating the end of the Italian Civil War and the end of Nazi occupation of the country during World War II.

The date was chosen by convention, as it was the day of the year 1945 when the National Liberation Committee of Upper Italy (CLNAI) officially proclaimed the insurgency in a radio announcement, propounding the seizure of power by the CLNAI and proclaiming the death sentence for all fascist leaders. « Giacomo Matteotti fu assassinato da sicari fascisti il 10 di giugno del 1924. Lo attesero sotto casa in cinque, tutti squadristi venuti da Milano, professionisti della violenza assoldati dai più stretti collaboratori di Benito Mussolini. L'onorevole Matteotti, il segretario del Partito Socialista Unitario, l'ultimo che in Parlamento ancora si opponeva a viso aperto alla dittatura fascista, fu sequestrato in pieno centro di Roma, in pieno giorno, alla luce del sole.

Si batté fino all'ultimo, come lottato aveva per tutta la vita. Lo pugnalarono a morte, poi ne scempiarono il cadavere. Lo piegarono su sé stesso per poterlo ficcare dentro una fossa scavata malamente con una lima da fabbro.

Mussolini fu immediatamente informato. Oltre che del delitto, si macchiò dell'infamia di giurare alla vedova che avrebbe fatto tutto il possibile per riportarle il marito. Mentre giurava, il Duce del fascismo teneva i documenti insanguinati della vittima nel cassetto della sua scrivania.

In questa nostra falsa primavera, però, non si commemora soltanto l'omicidio politico di Matteotti; si commemorano anche le stragi nazifasciste perpetrate dalle SS tedesche, con la complicità e la collaborazione dei fascisti italiani, nel 1944.

Fosse Ardeatine, Sant'Anna di Stazzema, Marzabotto. Sono soltanto alcuni dei luoghi nei quali i demoniaci alleati di Mussolini massacrarono a sangue freddo migliaia di inermi civili italiani. Tra di essi centinaia di bambini e perfino di infanti. Molti furono addirittura arsi vivi, alcuni decapitati. Queste due concomitanti ricorrenze luttuose, primavera del '24, primavera del '44, proclamano che il fascismo è stato lungo tutta la sua esistenza storica - non soltanto alla fine o occasionalmente - un irredimibile fenomeno di sistematica violenza politica omicida e stragista.

Lo riconosceranno, una buona volta, gli eredi di quella storia? Tutto, purtroppo, lascia pensare che non sarà così.

Il gruppo dirigente post-fascista, vinte le elezioni nell'ottobre del 2022, aveva davanti a sé due strade: ripudiare il suo passato neo-fascista oppure cercare di riscrivere la storia. Ha indubbiamente imboccato la seconda via.

Dopo aver evitato l'argomento in campagna elettorale, la Presidente del Consiglio, quando costretta ad affrontarlo dagli anniversari storici, si è pervicacemente attenuta alla linea ideologica della sua cultura neofascista di provenienza: ha preso le distanze dalle efferatezze indifendibili perpetrate dal regime (la persecuzione degli ebrei) senza mai ripudiare nel suo insieme l'esperienza fascista, ha scaricato sui soli nazisti le stragi compiute con la complicità dei fascisti repubblichini, infine ha disconosciuto il ruolo fondamentale della Resistenza nella rinascita italiana (fino al punto di non nominare mai la parola "antifascismo" in occasione del 25 aprile 2023).

Mentre vi parlo, siamo di nuovo alla vigilia dell'anniversario della Liberazione dal nazifascismo. La parola che la Presidente del Consiglio si rifiutò di pronunciare palpiterà ancora sulle labbra riconoscenti di tutti i sinceri democratici, siano essi di sinistra, di centro o di destra. Finché quella parola - antifascismo - non sarà pronunciata da chi ci governa, lo spettro del fascismo continuerà a infestare la casa della democrazia italiana. »

1 - CULT OF TRADITION.

5 - FEAR OF DIFFERENCE. How much xenophobic and queerphobic are they ? Oooh so fucking much.

6 - APPEAL TO A FRUSTRATED MIDDLE CLASS, which is one of their main political crusade along with xenophobia.

7 - OBSESSION WITH A PLOT. We LGBTQ people are a powerful lobby who has infiltrated the power and is destroying everything that makes them normal, u know... I didn't know we had that much power. On last notes, I thought we were struggling to even keep our rights :))))) Also the migrants want to take your job and come to rape your wives and never go to prison...

10 - CONTEMPT FOR THE WEAK.

12 - MACHISMO. Yup, women led party of a deeply sexist ideology. Who doesn't love that ? They're pretty moderate on many subjects about women on TV but it's just marketing, really. They don't care about women's rights, as showed everytime a law about it is voted. They're always against it.

13 - SELECTIVE POPULISM. They're kinda like that yup. They represent the french people better that anyone else and they know what it wants.

I'm pretty sure I'm missing some points because since I've left Twitter I don't them often so I don't remember all the fucking stuff they're saying. But yep, already 7/14 points on the fascism checklist for the Rassemblement National. We've got so much abstention that they can go to the second round at the presidential elections :))))

Gender neutral in Italian: It’s messy.

Introduction

Since I was given the “keep it basic” answer when I said I don’t know how to refer to someone in a gender-neutral way in Italian, I decided to do a little digging, mainly on Reddit as forums are extremely useful and a good resource when you have a question about someone else’s culture, since you’re likely to get answers from people who live there

But before we go into how Italians are shaking up the language to make it more inclusive, let’s talk about the femminielli

The Femminielli

From Naples, the femminielli are historically males who present themselves in a feminine way since first recorded in the 16th century book de humane phsyiognomonia. Although, today they include gay men, transwomen, and nonbinary people. The historical famminielli were considered channels of God, due to not being seen as male or female. As a result, they were also considered good luck and took gambling by Neopolitans. The femminielli came from poor communities, especially The Spanish Quarter, so health conditions such as an enlarged goitre.

While some transwomen and nonbinary individuals identify this way, it is incorrect to call the femminielli identity transgender. It is its own category, considered a third gender and is one of many examples around the world that such a concept is not a modern day American invention. (As many Italians believe it is.)

Gender Neutral Italian

Now with a small bit of history out of the way, we can get into the mess that is trying to shift the Italian language. It is difficult to find any answers, due to Italy being a more conservative country, leading to the idea of adding inclusivity to the language being “extremist” in the eyes of many. That, or people just have a “that’s just the way the language rigidly works” attitude, despite the observable fact that languages change and evolve. Just look at the constant adoption and dropping of slang terms, or even do a small bit of research in etymology.

So, what are the proposed solutions?

There are a few proposed solutions to this concern, albeit most of them have not gone anywhere. There is the singular “loro,” but it just doesn’t work. There is -u, but it’s a masculine suffix in certain dialects. There is dropping the suffix and replacing it with an asterisk, although it’s only online and currently unpronounceable. Shwa is another internet-born solution, an upside-down lower-case e (or a 3 symbol for plural). While shwa is technically pronounceable, it’s considered awkward as it’s a new letter, and it sounds like you have a certain accent and can reach communication issues there. They’re all controversial for their own reasons.

A final solution, which appears to be the best one currently, is referring to someone as “questa persona” or “quella persona.” While it means the rest of the sentence will be feminine, you’re not calling someone a man or a woman. You could back it up by simply not using pronouns, as pronouns are often dropped anyways in Italian.

Conclusion

The technically correct way to go about it is to just use the masculine form, as it’s the default way to refer to people and is used in mixed-gendered groups. I don’t know if it will still be in like ten years, and I don’t have any say on if it changes at all as an English-speaking American. I simply wanted to find an answer that fits in the rules of the language and respects the culture I wish to someday visit.

It turns out that it’s a complicated mess with no perfect proposals that not even the people from the concerned culture know for sure what’s best. I’m not going to make any suggestions on what anyone else should do, as it’s not in my place to do so.

I... have never heard in french of "buveur d'encre" (ink drinker)... We use "rat de bibliothèque" (library rat) which is closer to romanian and italian's one. Same as italian, "rat de bibliothèque" is also used for someone who studies a lot.

Do any french people ever used "buveur d'encre" ? I'm curious if it's maybe in some regions and not others ?

RTVS Palestine Fundraiser, April 12th-14th

This weekend, Radio TV Solutions will be holding a 3 day marathon fundraiser event for the people of Palestine.

All weekend long, we will be streaming a variety of games and events in an effort to raise money for on-the-ground aid groups and direct Palestinian support campaigns.

The event will not be a traditional stream fundraiser, rather than pointing people at one donation point, we will be suggesting many different support recipients, and you may donate to any of them. You can then submit your donation amount to be tallied into our rough total.

The information document detailing suggested groups/campaigns to support will open up closer to when the event starts, as well as a schedule of events for the weekend. The event will be hosted on my twitch channel, where http://stream.rtvsfundraiser.live/ links to.

Okay I've found out that some of my childhood cartoons are being uploaded on YouTube and even if they're probably only available in France I'm pretty sure using Invidious can pass through the restrictions. So I need to make you a post about french cartoons soon.

My scholar year is nearly finished. I have a 2 week holidays then one last week of exams and it's done ! I have pretty good grades and having fun (though it's a LOT of work dammit) :) After that I'll have around one month to relax and I'm working this summer... I hope I'll be able to post some stuff here from what I've learnt this year !

Giovedì? => Dantedì!

So today is Dantedì: yes, it’s giovedì (Thursday), but it’s also Dante’s day (Dante-dì*).

Basically today we celebrate both the 700 years from the death of Dante Alighieri and the day in which academics found out he started the Divina Commedia’s trip (or Primo Canto). To be fair, it was night: they say, from what he wrote, that he “lost himself in the Selva Oscura” when he was 35, in 1300, in the night between Thursday March 24th and Friday March 25th.

My favourite french podcast "Le Coeur sur la Table" (heart on the table, lit.), could be translated in italian ! The italian team need 12 500 € to do so, and there's a crowdfunding campaign to achieve this.

"Le Coeur sur la Table" / Il Cuore Scoperto parla dell'amore (romantico ma non solo) e di relazioni. È un'indagine documentaria che intreccia testimonianze, interviste di esperte/i e musiche originali per esplorare due grandi questioni:

in che modo i sistemi oppressivi di genere, razza e di classe modellano, limitano e danneggiano le nostre relazioni affettive, amorose, sessuali e amicali?

quali pratiche concrete possiamo mettere in campo, individualmente e collettivamente, per creare, nutrire e vivere, nonostante tutto, delle relazioni profonde e egualitarie.

Che si parli di eterosessualità, di carico  mentale, di violenze coniugali, di piacere sessuale, di monogamia, di uguaglianza… in fondo, è sempre questione d’amore. L’amore è il grande argomento della nostra epoca, ed è un argomento politico. Si tratta di politicizzare la sfera intima, ponendoci delle nuove domande.
