To be clear, there is a lot of expository dialogue laying out the broad strokes of Skar King's backstory and the history of his troop. But, the fact that he's a tyrant, that the majority of his troop are treated as slaves and that he's a sadistic bastard are all shown to us rather than spelled out point for point. We see what kind of king he is and it's the stuff classic villains are made from. All without any words spoken.
I know the narrative is that the Japanese Godzilla movies are intelligent and thought provoking while the American Godzilla movies are toyetic and dumb.
But I dunno. I just saw a villain established and a culture of subterranean apes explained through a five minute sequence with no dialogue. If that isn't good screenwriting and direction, I don't know what is.
If Villenueve did that, Film Twitter would have creamed its skinny jeans.
