You Belong With Me Part 1
katniss everdeen x peeta mellark
modern!AU
wc: 3k
warnings: mentions of death of a parent
tags: some fluff, some moments of angst, modern AU set in high school, childhood best friends, probably a few slightly ooc characters
summary: “from childhood best friends, to school friends, or acquaintances for lack of better words, and now whatever this is.” after being partnered together for a year long senior project, senior year for katniss and peeta is going to be a lot different than either expected.
A/N: winter break is here and i’m bored sooo 🤗 happy to be back for one more story! inspo taken from a few personal experiences, and a city near and dear to me. 🥹 *search up what was filmed in it when you see it ;)* stick around for a second A/N at the end :)
——————————————————————————
“katniss, you’re doing it again.” my best friend madge says in a quiet voice from beside me, startling me out of my (what i thought wasn’t so obvious) gaze.
“no, i wasn’t.” i spit back at her in a whisper, looking back down at the paper in front of me. i tap my pencil ever so lightly on the table as i felt my eyes go right back to where they were just a few second earlier.
really, it isn’t that big of a deal. at least that’s what i’ve been telling myself.
it’s the first week of senior year. finally, just under 200 days, and it’ll all be over. most of us will be off to college studying whatever our hearts desire, some will be home with a job already secured, a few probably married within a year of graduating. it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what everyone will be doing. what i do know is that i am beyond thrilled to move on. or i thought i was.
besides my mom, my sister, and the very few friends i have in this town, there was one thing that kept me from even thinking of applying to some ivy league schools i could definitely get into. one thing that kept me from wanting something more than this itty bitty town called hildebran, located near the mountains of north carolina. one small thing that kept me in the place where everyone knows everyone’s everything. his name was peeta mellark.
i could go on, and on, and on about him. from childhood best friends, to school friends, or acquaintances for lack of better words, and now whatever this is, i’ve known peeta for what feels like my entire life. as much as i want to go and follow my own dreams, something in the back of my mind won’t allow that to happen. all because of him.
“katniss!” i hear madge say again in an even more annoyed tone than before, interrupting my thoughts, “get your head out of your ass. you’re partners with bread boy.”
“what?”
my mind takes a moment to register exactly what she’s said as i look back down at my paper, back up to the board with a list of names projected on the screen. i squint my eyes to find that i am, in fact, partnered with none other than the bread boy himself.
i try not to let out a loud sigh, both out of frustration and relief. i mean, i did say “anyone but delly cartwright” in my head before class had begun. before peeta walked in, completely consuming my every thought.
then the realization truly hits. shit, i’m partners with peeta. before i can think about it any longer, everyone is standing up to move seats and sit by their partners. i look over at the table where peeta sits and i see delly’s stupidly long and beautiful blonde hair get up from the seat next to him. i try not to roll my eyes at it, but i want to so badly. i have no other choice but to gather my own things and move myself to the seat next to peeta.
my legs feel like they’re moving at a snail pace, not necessarily wanting to make the wrong impression again. i’m careful with my actions as i place the bag down next to the table quietly, pulling the chair out slowly, and sitting down without a word. out of all people and all times, it just had to be him and now. i can almost feel his eyes on me as i sit there, silent.
the teacher begins giving extra instructions on the assignment, which is a lengthy project to be completed by the end of the school year with said partner. finally, he ends his spiel of directions, giving us the rest of class to begin our research. this should be a blast, i think to myself, absolutely unamused at this situation.
“so…” i hear a voice mutter next to me, peeta is looking down at the paper in front of him before looking over at me.
“i’ll research topics, you can put together the paper portion, i’ll put together the presentation, you take half the presentation in class, i’ll take the other half, have it all done by spring break?” i say quickly, not meeting his eyes once as i check off all the requirements on my sheet.
“really, katniss.” i hear him say through a sigh.
“what? do you want a good grade or not?” i reply back with a straight face, still avoiding his eyes.
those blue eyes, as if looking into the ocean, they literally captivate you. that’s the only way to describe it. and that’s not the only captivating thing about him, because basically everything about him is.
“fine.” he says with an annoyed tone.
i continue beginning my work, a good distraction from the real distraction next to me. before i know it, the bell is ringing and everyone is packing their things to go to the next class period. i notice out of the corner of my eye delly making her way back over here and i begin packing my things quicker.
“if you need anything – any help – just text me. you still have my number.” i hear peeta say as he puts his things away.
“thank-“ i begin saying as i finally look up in an attempt to meet his eyes, but i’m just met with the view of his back, walking out of the classroom door, delly’s little frame next to his.
nice one, katniss.
***
“we’re going to learn how to give CPR this year!” prim shouts to mom as we walk into the house, the 3rd day of school officially done. one little freshman and one not-so-little anymore senior.
“that’s great, prim.” mom gives a half attempted smile to the girl, pulling her into a quick embrace.
i give mom as best a smile i can give when i cross paths with her, looking around for anything to eat. mom’s in her nursing gear ready for her 12 hour shift tonight.
“there’s rolls on the dinner table.” she says in an almost nervous voice.
“mhm.” is all i can mutter out before i see the bag on the table, the words ‘mellark bakery’ plastered on the front. i look at them briefly, insanely tempted to eat one. do i give in or hold my ground? i shake my head just slightly before running upstairs to my room.
i throw my backpack down next to my desk with a louder than intended thud. i almost throw myself onto my desk chair and let out a sigh. i hear the sound of footsteps coming up the stairs. a quiet knock graces my door as i prepare to open it.
“what?” i say in an almost annoyed tone, not on purpose.
“you and prim behave, okay?” mom says, but i see right through this ploy.
“what do you want?” i say unconvinced of her previous comment, as i turn my body to face her.
“you do know who dropped off those rolls, right?”
“y-yeah. rian, probably.” i say, stuttering as she’s bringing up all of this.
“no, peeta did.” she says in her most serious tone, as if she’s angry at me.
“okay.” i say softly before turning around in my chair to pick at the stickers stuck on my desk since i was a kid.
“katniss, just apologize already.” mom says softly.
“no.” i say, probably a little too loud for my moms liking. but she doesn’t yell.
“okay,” she says in her same soft tone as if she’s given up yet again, “i’ll see you tomorrow, i love you catnip.”
“love you too.” i mumble as i put my head down on my desk.
i hear the door quietly shut and i lift my head up. my eyes, against my will, go up to the collection of photos which are plastered on the wall in front of me. all of my best memories since middle school till now, all on display. as much as i scan the photos, hoping to see a different face, they’re almost all of him. him and i, when things were normal. before i screwed it all up. one specific photo grabs my attention, it’s from thanksgiving of freshman year.
~
the loud sounds of voices chatting, the young ones screaming as they play fortnite on the tv, and the smell of the best food you’ll ever eat fills the rooms of our house. we usually never host thanksgiving, but my mother had enough of it and basically forced everyone over our house. i was beyond excited because peeta, my best friend, was gonna be over.
our family has been friends with the mellarks since i was very young. the name is very well known in our little town. their family owned the bakery in town which has been a staple in every home since way back when. they’ve always been there for anyone and everyone who needs help. our family was no exception.
when my father died i was only 5, which is when everyone began stepping in. our family was already struggling before he passed away. his death was the final straw. the one family who made more of a difference than anyone else was peeta’s. his father knew my mother when they were kids, but grew apart when my mother married my father and peeta’s father married his mother. they were always at our house, or us at theirs, during the most difficult times after his death. holidays, birthdays, and everything were spent together. peeta became my best friend and i was always with him and his brothers, especially since prim was just a baby.
as i got up off the couch to escape the noisy kids from their game of fortnite, i tried to find peeta, who was nowhere to be found. i walked towards the back porch, the sliding door slightly cracked open to cool down the insanely warm house. i sauinted my eyes to make out that peeta had gone outside, sitting on the porch.
i slowly opened the door as quiet as i could in an attempt to run behind him and scare him. but he was 2 steps ahead of me because as soon as my foot touched the creaky wooden boards of the porch, he turned around, giving me one of his small smiles.
“what’re you doing out here?” i ask softly as i take a seat next to him. “it’s cold out here.”
“just needed a break from all of that.” he said as his head pointed to the door behind us.
“screaming at fortnite with the little ones isn’t calling your name?” i say with a small laugh.
“absolutely not.” he says chuckling.
there is just a slight breeze in the air, blowing the little strands of hair around my face into a mess, my braid still neatly in place. i turn my head just enough to look at him. the wind also just slightly blowing his blonde hair which he had grown out to an unruly length over the summer and had yet to cut it.
“how’s school been?” i ask softly. it’s no secret that we haven’t seen each other as much as we’ve used to. different classes, extracurriculars, now he’s working at the bakery more than ever before, it’s kind of hard to hang out anymore. plus, even though we’ve been friends since we were children, now we’re at that age where people find it crazy that a girl and boy can be ‘just friends’.
“pretty good.” he says with a satisfied smile, which brings my lips into a small smile too. “actually, i forgot to tell you, i made the wrestling team.”
“no way!” i say as my eyes go wide, the smile on my face growing bigger. “congratulations, that’s really great.”
“thanks.” he says with a sheepish smile, i could see the slight hint of red on his face.
“just in time to take over rian’s reign, huh?”
“yeah, but i’m sure that’s the only reason i actually got on the team.” he says looking down at his shoes. “they knew him leaving for college next fall was gonna leave an empty space. the name probably holds more meaning to them than anything else.”
“i highly doubt that.” i roll my eyes. “you’re one of the strongest people i know, and you’re just a freshman. not very many freshman look like you, peeta.”
i wasn’t wrong, if you put the freshman class in a room, you could pick him out immediately because of how he looked and how he towered over everyone else. he could easily pass as a junior, significantly bigger than basically all of the freshman.
“katniss, stop.” he said chuckling, his shoulder playfully bumping into mine.
and it was these little moments that started making me feel awkward around him. you’d think after basically 10 years of friendship that we’d be comfortable with each other, but things were changing. at least for me.
i hated that it had to be me that started feeling this way. i used to look at peeta and think about how lucky i was to have a best friend who’s perfect in every way possible. now i look at him thinking that and more. i started to see him in a “more than a friend” way. i was falling faster than i wanted, and i never knew if i’d be able to tell him. i didn’t want to ruin an amazing friendship over the slight chance it could be something more.
i was brought back to reality at the sound of the door sliding open behind us. we both look behind us, my eyes meeting my mother’s.
“what are you guys doing out here?” she asks, just a hint of suspicion in her voice.
“i just needed to take a break from everything going on inside.” peeta says almost immediately (as if he were stopping me from making up some dumb excuse), putting on that one charming smile he does around adults.
“oh boy, sorry about that.” my mom says with a concerned look on her face. it was no secret she treated peeta as one of her own, if not more nicely than one of her own. she knew how his mother was, sometimes she had to be the motherly figure he never truly had. “take all the time you need.”
“thank you.” he says, that stupid smile on his face still. why do i love that smile so much?
“actually, do you two mind if i grab a photo of you guys?” my mom asks quickly, holding a camera while giving an awkward smile, knowing i’ll object.
“really mom, come on-“ i say throwing my head back, extremely embarrassed.
“that’s more than fine, come on katniss.” peeta says happily.
before i object again, i feel peeta’s hand on my waist as he turns his body to completely face my mom, turning me too in the process as he pulled me in by his side. my relatively small body compared to his makes it easy for him to turn me around like i’m nothing. it’s really hard to ignore the feeling of his hand holding me like this.
i give as best of a genuine smile that i can, my mom snapping the photo.
“very cute guys.” she says, a huge smile on her face as she walks back inside. i feel my face start getting warm realizing i cannot hide this reaction to whatever just happened.
“let’s go back inside now.” peeta says as he stands up, holding out a hand to help me stand up. of course, my mind overthinks about the whole gesture, but as quickly as the thought enters my mind it leaves. it’s just how he is. in a world of boys, he’s a gentleman.
i take his hand and stand up, brushing off the chipped paint from the wood beneath me from the uncomfortable skirt that mom made me wear.
he looks at me for a moment, a curious look on his face.
“when are you gonna stop wearing those stupid braids?” he says with a smirk.
“shut up.” i elbow him right in his side with a laugh.
“it doesn’t look bad!” he says laughing in an attempt to save himself from another elbow jab. “it’s just… your hair looks nice when it’s down, too.”
for a brief moment, it looks almost as if he’s going to reach out and touch the very end of the braid. until he looks over to his right, like he remembers the house full of people that could be watching us out here.
“we should probably go inside now.” i say in almost a whisper, not acknowledging his previous comment, but my heart is almost beating out of my chest.
“yeah.” he says with a smile, both walking back to the door.
~
i hold the photo in my hands, remembering the whole situation with such detail. the whole situation before everything went south. i aggressively pin it back up on the wall wishing so desperately i hadn’t ruined everything.

——————————————————————————
It probably wasn’t the ideal first date, but you wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Technically, you and Mike had been dating for about 2 months now, but he wanted to continue working on himself and focusing on work before deciding to officially take you on a date anywhere. He wanted to save up enough money to do something fun and be able to bring Abby with you guys. It wouldn’t be the same without her there and you couldn’t agree any more.
“Abs what’re you most excited for?” Mike asked, looking at her through the rear view mirror. You sat next to him, holding his hand as you looked out of the window.
“Everything!” she squealed with excitement.
“You can’t decide on one thing you are most excited for?” you asked laughing.
This wasn’t just a big deal for you, but Abby as well. She always wanted to visit an amusement park. The semester had ended a few weeks ago for you and it was Abby’s last day of school just a few days earlier, so what better way to start the summer. After your big conversation with Mike, the siblings also worked on their relationship with each other. It was not easy by all means, but they were closer than ever before. Mike felt it was fair that he did this for Abby after all they’ve been through. He knew how much she’d wanted this and he found a way to make it happen. Anything for his little sister.
“Maybe the big rollercoasters. Those look fun.” Abby said grinning.
“You aren’t nervous at all? What if you’re not tall enough?” Mike asked her.
“Y/n told me I was tall enough!”
Mike playfully hit your arm.
“Okay to be fair I told her I think she’s tall enough. Have you been finishing your dinners Abs?” you asked chuckling.
“Duh, I had to be tall enough to ride the big rides.”
You looked over at Mike, smiling, knowing he was the one who came up with the idea to get Abby to finish her meals.
“I don’t want to eat!” you heard Abby shout from her room as you finished up making some grilled cheese. It was something you heard often from her voice, so it wasn’t surprising. You were used to making a meal and letting it sit on a plate all evening to get cold until just before bed when she’d suddenly be hungry.
You put it on a plate, the plastic wrap already in your hands as you assumed she wouldn’t be eating it now. Suddenly the little girl was right in front of you snatching the plate from your hands.
“I thought I heard you say you didn’t want to eat now?” you questioned her as she sat down quickly.
“I told her that if she doesn’t eat, she can’t ride the adult rides at the amusement park.” a voice said from the other room.
“Is that so?” you stepped out of the kitchen to investigate further. You found Mike sitting in his usual spot on the recliner in the living room.
“They stay tiny forever!” he said once more for good measure, you noticed Abby began eating faster.
“What are you up to now Michael?” you asked as you stood behind him, your hand finding it’s way into his messy dark curls.
“Wow legal name and everything, am I that suspicious?” he said looking up at you.
His brown eyes were no longer filled with that hint of sadness and exhaustion you always noticed. They always seemed a little brighter since you started dating. It was something you noticed immediately.
“You’re not very good at this you know.” you had to hold in a laugh to not make him feel too bad.
“I got the tickets.” he said whispering, trying not to show how excited he was about this.
“Did you really?” now you had to try and hold in your excitement too, you didn’t want to spoil the surprise with Abby in the room right next to you.
“Yup, they’re for the end of May. So a little end of school gift for both of you.” you could tell how happy and proud he was for finally saving enough money to treat both you and Abby. He had been waiting for so long to finally say he had done it.
“Mike she’s going to be so happy.” you placed a kiss on the top of his head.
“I know.” he looked over at her, still scarfing down her food. “Thought I could use that little trick to get her to eat dinner tonight. I promise I won’t use it too often.”
“I don’t buy that for a second Mike.”
“I still have time to return your ticket you know-“
He was interrupted by your lips on his as you leaned over the back of the seat to reach him. It was short but long enough for him to get the point. Once you pulled away, you sat with your chin resting on the back of the seat, just staring at Mike still playing with his hair.
“Can I have more food Y/n?” Abby shouted from the table.
“Sure Abs.” you replied, still staring at your boyfriend, which still felt crazy to think let alone say out loud.
“Stop kissing my brother Y/n, it’s gross.”
“Abs you’re the reason this exists, besides I’m not even kissing him. Not anymore.” you got up, lightly ruffling Mikes hair, saying that last part quietly so Abby wouldn’t hear.
The car ride to the amusement park was long, but it felt like it went by in a breeze with all of the random conversations the three of you had.
Once you got into the park and found your way around, you realized Abby wasn’t messing around. She immediately found the biggest rollercoaster possible.
“You sure you’re brave enough Abs?” Mike asked her. He was clearly getting nervous about it.
“Of course I am Mike!” Abby was the happiest kid in the world, not an ounce of fear in her.
You and Mike followed behind her, your hands laced together.
“Don’t be so nervous Mike, she’s gonna love it trust me.” you said, attempting to reassure him.
“I know.” he sighed. “But what if she hates it?”
“Abby’s one of the most adventurous and daring kids I’ve ever met. You’re never gonna be able to get her to leave here tonight.” you smiled, squeezing his hand. “Are you sure you aren’t scared?”
“Yeah right… I could never.” he sarcastically rolled his eyes at you.
Abby absolutely loved the rollercoaster and you weren’t entirely surprised that Mike did not love it as much. The ride photo was a hit for you and Abby. Abby was having the time of her life, sitting with you, while Mike sat behind with the most terrified look on his face. You and Abby spent a little too long laughing at the photo, Abby making sure to mock Mike as usual. The three of you continued on your adventure for the day as you walked hand in hand with Mike once again, Abby following next to you.
“I thought you said you liked rollercoasters Mike?” Abby questioned.
“Yeah, like ten years ago.” he replied, his voice ever so slightly still shaking from the adrenaline.
“Mike you were only like 14 years old ten years ago.” you were still chuckling at him. “Stop acting like such a grumpy old man.”
“Y/n called you an old man!” Abby started laughing at your accidental diss.
“Yeah, old man is a new low Y/n.”
“I didn’t mean it like that!” you tried defending yourself, but there was no coming back from this one.
“Mhm…” you knew Mike wasn’t buying it. You also knew exactly what he was fishing for.
Something you found out about the siblings as you continued to get to know them more was their ability to get what they wanted whenever they wanted it. They were both extremely good at it, too.
“Y/n! Can I pleaseee stay up tonight?” Abby begged you as you cleaned up her toys from the living room.
You looked at the clock on the wall that read 9:08.
“Abs, it’s only 9:08 you still have 20 more minutes to read or draw in your room.” you said, still finishing up picking up toys off the ground.
“Yeah, but I want to hang out with you!” she ran to the ground to latch onto your leg, not letting you move anymore.
“I know Abby, but your brother told me you gotta be in bed by 9:30. You can’t get up in the mornings when I let you stay up.”
“Pleaseee Y/n? Now that Mike is your boyfriend, you’re technically my mom now.”
“I don’t think that’s how it works-“ you were slightly embarrassed and intrigued that Abby really thought of you in that way.
“And if you’re technically my mom now, you can make up your own rules!”
You looked at the girl on the ground, still not allowing you movement. She gave you the most heart wrenching puppy dog eyes you couldn’t say no to.
“Alright, fine.” you sighed, smiling. “But only until 10, got it?”
“Got it!” she leaped off the ground, doing your special handshake with you as she got up.
You didn’t realize how late the two of you ended up staying up, it was now 11:30 and Abby was out like a light. The two of you were still on the couch in the living room. She looked way too cozy and you didn’t want to wake her up by moving her to her bed, so the two of you stayed there. You grabbed a blanket from the back of the couch and placed it over the two of you.
It was moments like these you cherished most with Abby. She was probably going to be a pain in the ass to wake up the next morning. Mike was also probably going to call you at 7:30am the next day to come wake her up yourself because he “wasn’t the one who stayed up till midnight playing pillow fights with her.” Regardless, these moments were the best. You loved spending quality time with Abby as if she were your own sister. You knew how much you meant to her and if staying up till midnight with her is what makes her happy, you were gonna do it with her. Maybe not every night, but if she really wanted to, Abs always found a way to your heart.
At around 6am, a door quietly opened. The sun was just beginning to shine through the windows of the house. Mike set down his things before he walked towards the living room. He stopped in his tracks when he noticed you and Abby sound asleep on the couch. He quietly chuckled to himself, he knew exactly how the two of you ended up like that.
He couldn’t really be upset though. He knew how much Abby loved you and needed you to be there for her. He also couldn’t forget how lucky he was to have you as his girlfriend. The two of you became “official” just a few weeks ago, but Mike still felt like the luckiest guy in the world to have you by his side.
He sat down in he usual spot on the recliner across from the couch. You started slowly waking up as the sun began hitting your eyes from the windows. You rubbed your eyes as you oriented yourself with where you were. Through your still blurry vision you could just barely make out that Mike was sitting in his chair.
“Good morning Mikey.” you said quietly through a yawn, careful not to wake up Abby just yet.
“Morning babe.” he said with a small smile. “Let me guess, another sleepover night?”
“How did you know?” you said pretending to be surprised.
“Don’t worry about it Y/n. Long as you guys are happy, I’m happy.”
“Are you still going to make me wake her up when she doesn’t want to get up?”
“Of course I am. Still makes me happy to know Abs doing well when I’m not around, and I get to see you just a little longer before you have to leave for classes.”
“Well in that case, I’ll do girls night with Abby every night.” you were starting to get up from the couch, sitting up now stretching the sleepiness out of you.
“You’re too cute Y/n.”
“Mike, stop.” you buried your face into your hands. You had to be honest, you were still getting used to all this dating stuff. As much as his little compliments made you feel like prettiest girl in the world, you still didn’t know how control your reactions over them.
A small smirk was forming on his face.
“Make me.”
You looked up from your hands so quickly. You never realized how he was exactly like his sister. They both knew exactly how to get what they wanted. You got up slowly to not wake Abby, smiling and rolling your eyes, realizing you give in way too easily for these siblings.
You carefully walked over to Mike and squeezed yourself next to him on the chair (or you attempted to, it was more you sitting on him rather than the couch.)
You wrapped your arms around his neck and he pulled you in closer. Your lips met his and everything felt perfect. It always did, it just felt right. It was like the two of you were meant to be, always and forever. After probably a little too long, you finally had to pull away from him. The two of you sat with your foreheads pressed together, admiring one another.
“How are you and Abby always so good at getting what you want?” you finally broke the comfortable silence.
“You’re just too nice to ever say no Y/n/n.” he brushed a strand of your hair behind your ear.
“And you and Abby are just difficult.” you said through a small laugh.
He pulled you in for one more kiss, the two of you smiling through it. When he pulled away he placed one more gentle kiss on your forehead. You let your head fall onto his shoulder, his left arm pulling you closer as the two of you just sat there. It wasn’t often the two of you had moments like this and you were both taking advantage of it.
“I should probably go wake up Abs now.” you said, wishing this feeling would never end, but you knew it had to at some point.
“Can we have five more minutes? Please?” he asked quietly, still holding onto you like he was gonna lose you at any moment.
And you couldn’t say no those brown puppy dog eyes that looked into yours.
You rolled your eyes with a smile as you leaned over to place a very quick kiss on Mikes lips.
“Y/n! You said you weren’t gonna kiss my brother in front of me today!” Abby said as she looked over with a disgusted look on her face.
“Your brother asked for it Abs.”
“That’s even worse, ew!” she gave you an unamused glare before running ahead of the two of you to her next big activity.
You gave Mike a knowing stare as he smirked back at you while you all continued walking. The two of you always found it funny that Abby was the matchmaker that got you two together, but now she could not stand the thought of you guys doing anything romantic. Ever.
After that, the rest of your day consisted of many activities including playing the prize games, riding tons more rides, and Abby forcing Mike on every big rollercoaster she could get him on.
Once you finally arrived at your final activity, it was like watching two kids in a candy store, quite literally. Abby’s eyes lit up as she walked into the ice cream store, she turned around to face you.
“Have you ever seen this many ice cream flavors in one place?!” she tried to contain her excitement.
“I don’t think I have Abs.” you said with a small laugh.
“Me either.” Mike said as he let go of your hand to begin inspecting every single flavor.
The two siblings spent a good half an hour in the shop just trying to decide what flavor to get. It was quite amusing watching Mike get so excited over ice cream. Out of all things, ice cream is what made him that happy. After everyone finally picked out a flavor (or more) the three of you left the shop to sit and eat your sweet treat.
“Today was the best day ever!” Abby said with a mouthful of rainbow sorbet.
“I have to agree with Abby on this one.” you said while poking at the rest of your ice cream
“I already want to come back and we haven’t even left yet.” Abby squealed.
“Hold it Abs, it’s gonna be a while until we can do this again.” Mike said.
“That’s okay, I can start collecting change so we can buy the tickets quicker!”
“Look at this little girlboss you have on your hands.” you said smiling at Mike.
“Believe me, I know.” he was already so used to Abby’s big ideas.
“I wish we didn’t have to leave already.” Abby said, looking down at her cup.
“It’s okay Abs, we’ll definitely be back before summer ends. Right Mike?” you looked over at Mike with your best puppy dog eyes, giving him a taste of his own medicine. He knew what you were doing. Abby quickly caught on to your idea and followed along.
“Anything for my girls.” he said with a smile.
“I am exhausted.” you said as you all made your way home, the dim moonlight shining through the windshield of the car. The quiet noise of Abby snoring from the backseat filled up the car.
“Pretty good first date, huh?” Mike said.
“More than pretty good, it was perfect.”
“Even with Abby here?”
“Especially with Abby here.” you smiled. “I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.”
Mike looked over at you quickly, not losing his focus from the road ahead of him.
“Me too.” he softly smiled, looking at the rearview mirror to see Abby fast asleep.
“How’d I get so lucky to have you in my life?”
“I ask myself the same question every day.”
You leaned your head onto his arm, starting to feel extra sleepy from the quiet hum of the AC and Abby’s occasional snores.
“I love you.”
“I love you more.”
You slowly drifted off to sleep after hearing those four words. It was all you needed to know, the worlds best little reminder of who you were doing it all for.
Mike looked over at you once again, smiling to himself. After he thought about it some more, today really was the perfect first date. Not the most ideal with Abby there, but after all, she’s the reason the two of you met in the first place.
Mike carefully moved his hand to turn on the radio, quiet enough not to wake you or Abby, but loud enough to keep him awake. The quiet sound of the song “Yellow” by Coldplay now filled the car. Mike smiled again, remembering that this song was yours and his. A constant reminder how Y/n would do anything for Mike and Mike would do anything for Y/n. A reminder for Mike that if he never mentioned this babysitting job to the neighbor across the street, this bond would’ve never formed.
An even bigger reminder to Y/n that taking the job from the neighbor across the street was the best decision she could’ve ever made. A decision that changed her life and the lives of two siblings who just needed a little extra love.

Hey hope your having a good day/ night
Can you do one when the reader is picking out a dress for a date with Mike and Abby helps her?
Thank you, I hope you are too :D
this was one of my favs to write. thank you for requesting this ☺️
————
“what color does mike like?” you ask, ruffling through your closet.
“i don’t know. i think he likes black… or blue. those are the only colors he wears,” abby says.
“every man likes black and blue,” you sigh.
“i think mike will like you in anything,” abby states. “he’s like, in love with you or something.”
heat creeps up your neck and you laugh weakly. “i’m sure he likes me a lot. i like him a lot, too.”
“no, he like-likes you,” abby insists. she sets down her crayons and looks up at you. “he’s always talking about you and asking me what flowers you like and what to get you for christmas.”
you can’t help the big smile that brightens your face. “he does?”
“yes,” abby nods. “no offense, but it gets kind of annoying.”
you chuckle, knowing she means him asking her questions she doesn’t know the answer to is annoying. “none taken,” you say as you look back at your closet.
it’s refreshing to have mike’s feeling towards you reinforced. you two have only been going out for two months, but it’s felt like a lifetime. you both get along so well. and even when you don’t, you’re able to handle conflicts smoothly.
although he told you in the beginning that he has a lot of shortcomings, you see right past them. he’s caring, thoughtful, funny, and super cute. he actually tries, which you know, that’s what people are supposed to do, but you don’t have to ask anything of him. he just knows what to do and say.
you’ve found yourself smiling whenever you think of him, wanting to text him when something bad or good has happened, making excuses to stay late at his house just so you can spend more time with him. it’s safe to say you’re falling for him faster than you ever have for anyone else.
it helps that you and abby get along so well, too.
you were a little worried in the beginning that she would shut you out from what mike had told you about her. but she welcomed you with open arms, telling you how happy she was to have a girl around. now you two hung out regularly while mike had started to work later shifts to help pay for things like dates. you insisted that you didn’t matter and you liked having in-house dates, but he knows you deserve something better, and he wants to be able to provide that. plus, it means more time with abby, which you would never turn down.
“you should wear the red one!” abby points to the dress you’re holding out.
you hum in thought. “i don’t know. do you think it’s too… bold?”
abby shakes her head. “mike will be able to find you easily if you get lost. he’s always afraid of being he cares about getting lost.”
your chest warms at her statement. mike has told you all about his brother and his family history. you knew he was afraid to because he’s been shut down in the past for being too “complicated” or “traumatized” — which if someone can’t handle, then fine, but it’s still pretty messed up when he’s blamed for being too traumatized — but you assured him that your family isn’t perfect either. and while you will never understand his experience, you’re ready to support him and learn how to help.
“he’s very good at protecting people, though,” abby adds. “so you shouldn’t be scared.”
“i feel very safe with your brother,” you smile. you pick out a few different dresses from your closet, laying them out on your bed beside abby.
“is there one i should try first?” you ask. “mmm,” she purses her lips and looks at the four options. you picked out two black ones, the red she mentioned earlier, and an emerald green one.
“the green,” she says. “alright,” you say. you grab it and change in your closet, stepping out to have abby help zip you up. this dress is a simple, but beautiful dress. it’s a maxi dress that stops just above your ankles. the straps are thick, but they don’t cover the whole width of your shoulders. the top comes together in a v-neck, stopping at the perfect place for there to be just enough skin showing.
“what do we think?” you spin around, making abby giggle.
“i like it, but …”
“you want me to try the others on?”
“yeah!”
“no problem. i picked them all out for a reason.”
the next one you try on is one of the black dresses. the first one is a strapless back cami dress. it has a sweetheart neckline and a very short skirt with ruffles on the bottom. as you look into the mirror, you realize how much it makes you look like an attention-seeking teenager.
“i do not remember it being this… short,” you say. you swear if you bend down, everyone would see your ass. and not that you think that mike would mind, but you’re confident everyone else in the restaurant would.
“i don’t really like it,” abby says. “yeah, me neither,” you say.
the second black one is short like the first, but the back has a bow and the sleeves cover your shoulders and half of your bicep. they’re slightly puffy and the rest of the dress has small flowers on in.
“i’m not sure this fancy enough,” you sigh. “i like the flowers,” abby says. “when I grow up can i have this dress?” she looks up at you with the biggest brown eyes you’ve ever seen. her bottom lip is pouted as she tries hard to convince you. you don’t need too much convincing to say yes, though.
after promising abby to lend you the dress when she’s older, you change into the red one. you already can tell from the moment you take it off the hanger it’s going to be abby’s favorite.
it’s a cocktail dress that stops just above your feet. it’s tight-fitting, but not suffocating, which allows it to hug you in all the right places. the top of the dress appears to be looser-fitting as there’s just a tiny bit of extra material at the valley of your breasts. along your waist are creases as if you’ve somehow made it tighter, but it’s just how it was made to sit on your body.
“wow,” abby gasps. “you look so pretty!”
your cheeks feel warm and you look at yourself bashfully. “you think mike will like it?”
“yes! he’s going to have a heart attack when he sees you!”
you laugh, “oh, i hope not.”
you finish your hair and makeup, letting abby choose what your eye makeup will look like and lipstick you’ll use for the night,
“thank you for helping me, abs. you have great taste,” you say as you buckle on your black stilettos.
“i know,” abby smiles.
there’s a knock on your door and your heart races. you look through the peephole, seeing it’s just vanessa here to pick up abby. you breathe out in relief and open the door.
“look at you!” she gasps. “do you think mike will like it ?” you ask, fiddling with the silver bracelet on your right hand.
“if he doesn’t, then i will take you on that date.” you both share a laugh before she speaks again. “but yes, he will love it.”
“thank you. alright, abs, are you ready?” you ask. abby jumps up from the bed, grabbing her box of crayons and pictures.
“if you guys order spaghetti can you bring some home?” she asks.
“sure, honey,” you pat her back. she reaches up for a hug and you bend down to her level. “i’ll see you tomorrow.”
“see you!” she exclaims, grabbing vanessa’s hand.
“mike is in the parking lot, by the way,” vanessa says. “he was reciting how to greet you.”
you giggle, feeling like an infatuated school-girl. “i can’t wait to see what he’s come up with.”
vanessa gives you a hug goodbye and the two walk off. you shut your door, locking just the first lock. you grab a coat and spray some perfume on your pulse points. a few minutes later, there’s another knock on your door. you look through the peephole once again just to make sure it’s mike. once you see it’s him, your heart begins to race and you can already feel yourself becoming a little sweaty from nerves. you hope he smells your perfume instead of sweat.
you open the door, aweing at the bouquet of flowers he has in his hand. without fail, mike always brings some type of plant to your door when picking you up for a date. sometimes he’ll bring you house plants to add to your collection or, like tonight, a beautiful bouquet of flowers. and they’re always different, which to you means that he keeps track and wants to make it special for you. it makes you fall for him deeper every time.
“i just saw abby and vanessa. they were — woah.”
he stops as he looks up at you from his stare at his shoes. he always looks at you like this, even when you’re in a ratty old t-shirt or if you’ve just woken up. you’d be lying if you said you didn’t love it.
he looks at you with wide eyes that search every part of you, not sure where to look. his pupils are already blown wide and you stifle a laugh when you remember it doesn’t take much for him to become entranced by you. the way he looks at you is like he’s won the lottery, which in his mind, he has with you.
“i… i’ve never seen you in red.” he finally finds his voice.
“yeah, i never wear it. not sure why. i might start now,” you grin.
“well, you look gorgeous in anything. and tonight is definitely no exception.” he truly looks like he can’t believe his eyes. like this is a dream and as soon as he reaches out to touch you, you’ll disappear.
you never thought of yourself as anything special before — cliché, yes, but everyone has insecurities. you aren’t not confident, but you know you’re no supermodel, even though you can definitely make yourself into one. but mike makes you feel special. from the way he softly gasps every time he sees you and the wild look in his eyes. you know later he won’t be looking at any other woman other than you. it’s the bare minimum, but it’s hard to come by. you soon realize that if you two ever break up, he’ll be your standard.
“we definitely make a handsome pair,” you wink. your own eyes graze his body, making his heart thump in his chest. he doesn’t know why, but somehow you see something in him. not just in his looks, which he can admit he’s a good-looking guy, but just his personality and what cards he’s been dealt in life. you accept everything about him, even the parts he’s most afraid of. you just make life better for him; he hopes to keep you for as long as you’ll let him.
“is this a new suit?” you ask, reaching out and smoothing his jacket collar out. the suit is navy blue with a white undershirt that has the first few buttons undone. you can see his chest hair peeking out of the cotton, making you lick your lips as you imagine what’s underneath. the suit looks to be tailored, which you know must’ve cost him a lot of money. you don’t say much, though, knowing that if mike wants to spend his money like this, there’s nothing you can do about it. although you make a note to yourself to pay him back somehow.
“yeah,” he nods. “the old one is, well, old,” he chuckles.
“you look so handsome, mike,” you sigh. it comes out all dream-like, but you can’t help it. he makes you brain numb and fuzzy and insides feel all jittery and warm.
he blushes under your gaze, looking down and remembering his little gift for you. “these are for you. they’re, uh, starlette lilies. i thought they would look nice with all your fall decorations.”
could he get anymore perfect?
“they are beautiful. thank you,” you gush. you take his hand and lead him in while you go to your kitchen to fill up a vase to put them in.
“not as beautiful as you,” mike remarks. he’s got you grinning from ear-to-ear. you place them in water with the plant food, setting them on your coffee table.
“i’m ready to go,” you say, turning back to him. he holds his hand out for you and you slip yours into his, lacing your fingers together. your palms are a tiny bit sweaty, but he doesn’t seem to mind. you’ve been on quite a few dates with him, but no matter what, you always get nervous as if it’s the first time you’re meeting him. you honestly hope this feeling never fades.
“abby helped me pick this dress out,” you say as you two walk to the elevator.
“you should let her pick them out all the time,” he says.
you smile down at him. “maybe i will.”

The Neighbor Across the Street pt. 5
Mike Schmidt x Babysitter!f!Reader
part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 6
wc: 3.6k
warnings: angst, little bit sad (if y’all can stick thru this ONE part 🫶), fluff sprinkled in some parts (as always, lmk if there’s anything i’ve missed)
summary: the neighbor across the street needs a babysitter, so you take the job, not knowing what’s in store for you as you grow closer to the siblings. AU where nothing bad ever happens at the pizzeria.
A/N: this is gonna be the “hard” chapter, but it’ll all be worth it for part 6, the official finale of the series 🥹 no worries tho, i still plan on expanding the story once it’s over!!!
——————————————————————————
You could barely focus in any of your classes today. Your mind was full of thoughts about one person and one person only: Mike. All of the things that happened in such a short amount of time were eating you alive. You couldn’t take any of it anymore. In a way, you wished Abby hadn’t told you about her secret. You didn’t want something as silly as a “crush” to get in the way of your goal of keeping Abby and Mike happy.
As you drove home from your classes, you didn’t know what to expect that evening. You knew he probably wanted to clear up whatever had happened the other evening. Maybe he just wanted to tell you he was sorry for not paying you again. But then why did he want you there an hour early? What on earth could he want to talk about for a whole hour with you?
You only ever had two serious conversations with him in the two months or so of knowing him, the one the first night shift of babysitting Abby and during your walk with him just a few days ago.
There was that voice, all the way at the back of your head, that was telling you something completely different. There was a voice that was saying this had to do with Abby’s secret. You attempted to quickly get it out of your head, your hands getting sweaty at the thought as you continued driving home. You hated to admit this was making you more nervous than it should’ve been.
The thought of him waiting at his door until you got home crept into your head once more. The way he saw how you looked back one last time like you’d done every time before. How often did he wait at the door like that? Did he genuinely care about you that much to wait?
When you got home you had an hour until you knew you’d have to be at Mike’s house. Of course today was one of those days where your professors just knew you were having an off day and assigned what felt like 10x more work than usual. You hesitantly took out all of your textbooks and notebooks in an attempt to knock out a few assignments before you left.
As you sat down, something hanging on the headboard of your bed caught your attention. The black hoodie Mike had lent you was there. You truly intended on giving it back to him yesterday since you’d accidentally wore it home the other night. Whether you forgot it by chance or on purpose you couldn’t even remember anymore.
It sat there like a painful reminder of not knowing what was to come later. He said it wasn’t anything bad, but maybe he just didn’t want to stress you out. What if he had to quit the night job, therefore leaving you jobless? You didn’t want to leave them hanging. You didn’t care if you were getting paid consistently or not. You just wanted to be there for them. That was all that mattered to you now.
You continued to sit there, looking at the hoodie, thoughts racing through your mind with no signs of stopping. The textbooks and notebooks all over your desk were never opened, you didn’t have the energy now at least. Not when your leg wouldn’t stop bouncing and stomach was twisted into knots. You kept telling yourself “It’s just your imagination, everything is fine. Everything will be okay.” It was already almost time for you to go, so you threw all the books back into your bag, grabbed the hoodie, and made your way over.
The feelings were mutual back at Mike’s house. Mike wasn’t sure why he felt so anxious about having to talk to you. It really wasn’t a big deal at all. He just wanted to clear up last night and, well, some other things too. He was just as scared of the unknown as you were. The kitchen smelled like pasta cooking as he tried his best to distract himself by making Abby’s dinner. Just incase the conversation went really bad and you didn’t want to stay. Not that he was anticipating that it would go badly.
He stirred the spaghetti as the water bubbled, focusing as best he could on everything but his thoughts.
“Mike why are you making dinner tonight?” Abby interrupted standing by the fridge.
“Thought I’d give Y/n a break for one night.” he said, still looking down at the pot of boiling water.
“She makes it so much better than you do though.” Abby started whining.
“Beggars can’t be choosers Abs.” he said with a sigh.
“What does that mean?” Abby said with a confused tone to her voice.
“Life’s not fair, that’s what it means. You either eat my pasta or nothing.”
He could practically hear the girl roll her eyes in response.
“Well, I’m not hungry right now.”
Now she’s just being a smart ass, Mike thought to himself.
“Good thing Y/n can warm it up for you later when I’m gone.”
“I don’t want to eat it later though. It’s gonna be gross later.” she crossed her arms now, she knew what she was doing.
“Well you’re either gonna eat it now, later, or never. This is what you’re getting for dinner.” Mike was getting more impatient with her sudden attitude.
“Your pasta is gross Mike I’m not eating it.”
“Whatever. I don’t care anymore, don’t eat it.” Way to ruin this evening Abby.
“Why do you have to be so-“
“Abby, just stop! I’m not having this today. Go to your room.” he didn’t realize how much he rose his voice at her. Arguing wasn’t uncommon for them, but he rarely, if ever, rose his voice this much at her. He looked back at her, the young girls eyes were welling with small tears. This evening already wasn’t going as planned and Y/n hadn’t even arrived yet.
“I hate you Mike!” Abby shouted before running to her room, slamming the door shut.
Mike took a deep breath, putting a hand over his face. Why did he always have to mess everything up? He should’ve never asked Y/n to come over early. If he hadn’t asked, then this situation would’ve never happened. He should’ve just let the situation go. He looked back at the pot of spaghetti, the water still bubbling, finally deciding to shut off the stove.
He looked at the landline phone hanging on the wall beside the fridge. It was almost calling his name to pick it up, dial your number, and tell you not to come by anymore. He stepped forward reaching out a hand to pick up the phone. Just before he could start dialing the numbers he heard a door slowly and quietly open.
He looked at the clock on the stove, quickly realizing what time it was. There was no escaping the situation now, for either of you. He walked out of the kitchen, now in the dining room as he watched you shut the door and set down your backpack.
“Hey.” you said in almost a whisper, your usual smile on your face to hide the nervousness that still lurked deep down.
Just like that, time felt slower than ever before for Mike. Honestly, every time he saw you it began feeling more and more like that. It wasn’t like you tried to dress to impress or anything like that. The only times you had a remotely “nice” outfit on were the first few days of babysitting and extremely occasionally after that. Even then, it was nothing more than a pair of jeans and a somewhat nicer t-shirt or sweater.
Your hair was in a low messy ponytail, loose strands of hair falling out of the scrunchie. You wore a t-shirt with your college’s name plastered across the front and extremely baggy black sweatpants. This was a look that was all too familiar to Mike. The days you wore outfits like this were days that school was beating your ass. Those were the days he’d come home and find you still finishing up work at the dinning room table far too late in the night.
The way that an outfit so simple and, for lack of better terms, lazy, could make Mike feel this way felt like a crime to him. He was convinced that any other outfit imaginable would not compare to this. There was no way to explain this, but this just felt different to him.
Maybe it was because of your determination and drive for success. It was something he didn’t see in himself. Maybe he envied that you had that in you and he didn’t. He saw how hard school was. He saw that no matter how hard it got, you were still there on time every time. He wished so much he had that level dedication in him.
That’s when his eyes turned to your hand. It was holding the black hoodie he let you borrow when you stayed for s’mores. He had honestly forgotten he even gave you it, but now he was wondering why you’d brought it back. He really didn’t mind if you’d kept it. Now thinking about it, he wanted you to keep it.
“You didn’t have to make dinner Mike, you know I’ve got it.” your voice, still quiet making sure Abby wouldn’t hear your presence, broke the thoughts in Mikes head and brought him back to reality.
“Yeah, um, about that…” he began, sighing heavily.
“We need to talk.” you immediately noticed the tension that was now forming.
“Yeah.” he pulled a chair out of the dining table for you, and you both quietly sat down.
You both sat in silence for a minute or so. You waited for him to start talking and you were going to give him as long as he needed to gather his thoughts. You focused on the salt and pepper shakers in the middle of the table.
“I’m sorry.” he finally spoke up.
“Why are you sor-“
“Let me explain before you try telling me I have nothing to be sorry about.” he interrupted, his volume significantly louder than before.
You didn’t say anything back, you were ready to let him say whatever he needed to say because clearly he needed it.
“It’s just-“ he paused again, putting his face into his hands. He took a deep breath attempting to gather his thoughts and emotions before he spoke again. He wasn’t going to let them ruin this conversation.
“I don’t deserve you, Y/n.” you finally looked up. Those incredible brown eyes met yours. They almost appeared to have tears forming in them.
“You do so much for us Y/n. You’re here on time every day, no matter how much you had going on during the day. You’re always willing to do literally anything with Abby. All of the dumb things I’ve said no to her about, you’ve said yes. You’re the mother figure she never had. She doesn’t act the same way around me as she does with you. She deserves this so much more than I do. She needs you, Y/n. I don’t deserve any of this. I can rarely pay you on time. I’m putting you in this horrendous situation where you go to class every day, then you come home for 2 hours max and babysit for the entire night. You’re working literally 2 jobs and you didn’t even want this. I accidentally threw you into it, you should’ve just not taken it. It’s not fair. And yesterday when I stormed out without explaining anything, that wasn’t fair either.”
“Mike-“
“You deserve more Y/n. You deserve the world. You have so much motivation and determination in you it’s actually insane. You’re always smiling, always trying to be kind and helpful. You put others before yourself. I just feel that someone like me, the complete opposite of you, doesn’t deserve to have you in my life. I have not even an ounce of dedication or care inside of me. You don’t deserve to have to put up with all my crap. You just don’t Y/n.” he stopped, still looking you in the eyes.
You really wanted to break down and sob. How could he think he’s worth nothing? How does he not see all the effort and care he puts into taking care of Abby? He’s trying a whole lot harder than other people who have half the worries in life that he has.
“How long have you felt this way?” you said quietly, you knew if you spoke any louder than a whisper you’d start crying.
“Since the moment you first came by to try out the job.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” small, but noticeable tears were now falling down your face. “You’ve felt this way for almost 2 months and you didn’t say a word?”
“Y/n, please don’t-“
“What do you mean ‘please don’t?’ How am I supposed to brush past this knowing you’ve felt like this for 2 months now?” You wiped the tears off of your face.
Mike was now looking down at the table, avoiding your face at all costs. He knew if he saw you that way, it would be over for him. It was never his intention to make you feel this way, he knew you would care, but he didn’t think you’d care this much.
“Mike, look at me right now.”
His eyes hesitantly met yours. Your heart was beating so fast you could hear it in your head.
“You are the most thoughtful, caring, most determined person I’ve ever met. You sacrifice so so much for Abby and you don’t even realize it. When I talk to Abby, I hear all about a big brother who pours his heart out just for her to be happy. She is so incredibly lucky to have someone who dedicates so much of his time and energy just to make her happy. You didn’t ask for this and I know you’ve been through hell and back, but you do everything for that girl. No matter how much you think she doesn’t see it, you are genuinely her whole world. I have never, ever, met someone so caring in my life. You don’t have to do any of it, yet you are so selfless that you do it.”
“Then why does she hate me? Why does she always say so much about how great you are and how much she loves your cooking more than mine? Why are we always arguing over the stupidest things?”
“That’s what siblings are for Mike.” you said with an airy laugh through your tears. “After I came over to hearing your argument I went to talk to Abby. She said how she thought you hated her, how you’re always working and never do stuff with her anymore. I told her to look at all of the amazing things you do for her, all of the toys and art supplies she is lucky enough to have. I asked her who gets her all of these things. Who works their ass off for her to have the greatest childhood ever? You do, Mike. She just doesn’t know how to put that into words or actions. We’re gonna work on that though, okay?” you reached across the table to grab his hands and held them in yours.
“You need to give yourself a whole lot more credit. All I want is for you guys to be okay.” you smiled, tears still running down your face. “I just want to help you guys in any way I can. I don’t care how much I get paid or how often I get paid, that doesn’t matter to me anymore Mike. I just want to be there for the two of you.”
After all he said, after his vulnerability showed the underlying jealousy he had for you and your kindness you did it once again. You put others before yourself. He didn’t realize you were not going to give up.
“This is exactly why I don’t deserve you.”
“Quit saying that, you deserve me just as much as Abby does.” you squeezed his hands, reassuringly smiling at him. “You’re not getting rid of me.”
All he really wanted to do in this moment was to get up and kiss you. You believed in Abby, and in him, when you didn’t have to. No one was forcing you to do any of this and to know you were taking it upon yourself from the kindness in your heart made Mike feel even crazier for you. You were one of the first people to show genuine care and love to him and Abby since their parents passed away.
“I love you Y/n.”
Those 4 words came out with no thought, no hesitation, no control. It just felt right.
You were both shocked, yet relieved to hear those words. Your next 4 words didn’t have much thought to them either
“I love you too Mike.” you said, not hesitating either. It didn’t feel forced in the slightest, it felt right for both of you. You honestly couldn’t believe what had just happened and neither could Mike. Neither of you would admit it, but you weren’t even sure what to do next.
“Well it took you guys long enough.” a small voice peeped from behind you.
You turned around to see Abby, standing with her arms crossed, a smug look on her face.
“Abby, how long have you been here?” Mike said, quickly letting go of your hand he still had in his.
“Long enough to hear you and Y/n say you love each other.” she said, smiling wide and giggling. “I am so happy you finally told Y/n you have a crush on her! Or did Y/n tell you she has a crush on you?” her eyes lit up with excitement.
“Well, I wouldn’t necessarily say that’s what happened but-“
“Oh, he definitely was the one who told me first.” you smirked after interrupting.
“But who decided to hold hands first?” he quickly responded, returning you a small smirk.
Your face began burning up as you buried your face in your hands for a moment, but you also couldn’t help but laugh. Leave it up to Abby to be little miss matchmaker. Of course she’d sneak her way in to finally see her hard work come together. Once Mike realized there was no point in hiding anything anymore, he grabbed your left hand again and held it in his. It felt almost freeing, like a weight was lifted off of him in multiple ways, to be able to hold your hand.
“Also, I’m hungry.” she chimed in quickly, with a hint of annoyance in her voice.
You and Mike both looked at each other, knowing that the pasta he attempted to cook was probably off the table now. It was also almost time for Mike to go to work now, which he really didn’t want to do anymore, but there was no other choice.
“I’ll just order you guys a pizza.” he said with a smile, a genuine smile. “Y/n doesn’t need to be cooking for you after this, and I know you won’t eat whatever I can make in 10 minutes Abs.”
Abby began jumping around with pure excitement. Probably a little too excited after just offending Mike’s cooking, but that didn’t matter anymore. As long as she was happy and you were happy, Mike was gonna be happy. He was going to start changing his attitude about everything and he wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else than you. It wasn’t going to be easy, but was gonna try his very best.
“You sure Mike? I don’t mind cooking.” you replied.
“Really Y/n?” he said, sarcastically rolling his eyes.
“Okayyy fineee.” you said holding out the endings extra long, just for dramatic effect.
“Thank you Mike!” the Abby shouted, running up to his chair to give him a hug. Mike smiled at you as the young girl clung onto him.
“Thank you.” he mouthed to you.
You gave him a soft smile in response. You looked down at the black hoodie still in your lap. You brought it in the case he wanted it back, but after the conversation you two just had, there’s a good chance he’d want you to have it. Whether that was his original intention for you to keep it or not, you decided you would keep it. A constant reminder of who you were doing this for. Taking this job, you didn’t know what you were getting yourself in to. You also didn’t know why you were so nervous for this conversation. It couldn’t have gone any better. You were ready to go through whatever hardships and challenges you had to for your two favorite neighbors.

--------------
Your gentle laugh rings through Mike's ears, causing him to look at you with a wide smile. The two of you walk through the mall, hands intertwined, staring into each others' adoring eyes.
"I love my necklace," you say, softly touching the shiny piece of jewelry that sat on your chest.
"You picked it out," Mike laughs.
"Yeah, but you paid," you retort, giggling. The two of you continued to smile at each other. Oh, how you wished you could stay in this moment forever.
******
Ever since he potentially saved your life at the very same mall about a year ago, you made it a point to go there every time after work, since it was just right down the street from the restauraunt you waitressed at. And every single time, there he was, patrolling the place as a security guard.
He sure works a lot, you remember thinking to yourself. It wasn't until a few months after you met that you found out the reason for that was so he could take care of his little sister, Abby. "I'd do anything for her," he told you one night as he walked you out to your car after his shift was over. "Even if it means working a thousand hours a week- as long as it means a better life for her, I would do absolutely anything."
And now here you were, holding hands with this perfect guy. You two had offically been a couple for two and a half months now; and you had never been happier. Abby loved you, and you would help her and Mike at every possible chance. For once, the both of you were off work today, and Abby was at school- so the two of you decided to go to the mall after having breakfast at his house.
"Aren't you sick of that place?" you teased as you got into the passenger seat of his car.
"Yeah, but I want to buy you a necklace," he said, blushing. "I've been saving up."
"Mike!" you exclaim. "No. You know you don't have to get me-"
He reached over and softly put his index finger on your lip, cutting you off. "Shhh. I've made up my mind."
You sit back, sighing in mock defeat. "Alright, you win," you giggle.
Once the two of you got to the mall and went to the jewelry store, a beautiful, silver necklace with a heart at the end caught your eye. When you saw the price, however, you didn't want to ask- but it was too late. Mike already saw the way your eyes lit up, and he got a worker to get it out of the glass case before you could even react.
Mike looked over at you as the worker handed him the jewelry. "Don't feel bad. I promise this is what I want for you. Okay?"
You nodded, and he started to bring the necklace up to your neck. "May I?"
He went behind you, gently bringing the necklace over your shoulders and clasping it around your neck. The feel of his fingers against your skin made you shiver.
"There," he said, turning you around to look at the necklace.
"Mike Schmidt, you're better at putting on necklaces than me!" you laughedd.
"Well," he grinned. "I've had some practice with Abby. My mom has a few necklaces that she likes to wear sometimes." He looked down and started to shuffle his feet.
You put a hand on his shoulder. "Thank you," you said softly. You take his hands, lean in, and give him a soft kiss on the cheek.
Once Mike paid, the two of you walked out, hand in hand, and started to stroll down the area.
"It's definitely a lot easier to enjoy the mall when you don't have to work," Mike says.
Your gentle laugh rings through Mike's ears, causing him to look at you with a wide smile. The two of you walk through the mall, hands intertwined, staring into each others' adoring eyes.
"I love my necklace," you say, softly touching the shiny piece of jewelry that sat on your chest.
"But you picked it out," Mike laughs.
"Yeah, but you paid," you retort, giggling. The two of you continued to smile at each other. Oh, how you wished you could stay in this moment forever.
But all good things must come to an end, because at that moment, a voice from behind catches your attention, immediately sending chills down your spine.
"Well, well, y/n. Nice to see that you moved on."
You whip around, letting go of Mike's hand. The man (now in front of you) continues.
"It's been, what, two years since the breakup?" he sneers. "You won't be able to forget me, no matter how hard you try, y/n." Everything in you just wanted to run as far away from him as possible. This was Danny, your ex-boyfriend from high school. What started as a typical high school romance turned into a controlling, toxic relationship. You felt your cheeks turn red as Mike protectively inched closer to you. You could feel his body starting to tense up.
"Do you know him?" he asks, his voice low.
"'Course she does," Danny says. "We have a lot of...history. Don't we, y/n?" He looks down at you, a twisted smile spreading across his face.
"Why are you acting like such a creep?!" you burst out. "Leave us alone." You couldn't deal with this, not now, not ever. Things were so perfect with Mike, and now you were scared that, somehow, in some way, Danny would convince Mike that you weren't good enough for him.
Just like he convinced you you'd never fall in love again.
Suddenly Danny's eyes start to travel down your face, your neck, and then lands on your chest, where the necklace lays. You feel sick.
"Ah, so did Lover Boy over here buy you this?" Danny suddenly stretches out his arm and grabs hold of your necklace.
"What the-?!" Mike screams, shoving Danny away and grabbing hold of your hand. He places himself in front of you and Danny, who is smiling, as if he's amused by the whole situation.
"Don't you ever touch me again," you say, your voice trembling. Mike looks at you, concerned, and gives your hand a reassuring squeeze before he lets go. He walks toward Danny, inches away from his face.
"Get out of here," Mike says, his voice dangerously low. "And don't ever come near y/n again."
"Or what, Lover Boy?" Danny sneers again.
"Or I'll call the authorities and have you arrested for assault." Mike reaches into his pocket and pulls out an ID which says he's a mall security guard. "Unless you want me to do so right now? I do happen to know the head of security here..."
You smile. Go, Mike! you cheer in your head.
Danny's arrogant smile fades. He looks at you one more time. "It won't last," he says. "Soon you'll be running back to me."
"Get. Out." Mike growls. And finally, Danny turns and walks away.
Mike turns to you, grabbing hold of your hands. You start to talk. "I'm so, so sorry-"
"Hey, hey, hey, you don't have to apologize for anything," Mike says, gently placing his palm on your cheek and brushing a strand of hair out of your face. He pulls you into a hug, and you happily accept it, letting the warmth of his strong body spread over you.
"I guess you can see why that relationship didn't work out," you say into his shoulder with a weak laugh.
"Maybe you should stop going to malls," Mike jokes back as he pulls away from the embrace and looks at you with loving eyes. You chuckle, looking back into them.
"This will last," he says confidently, his hands on your shoulders.
"I know," you say with a soft smile. "And this will prove it."
You wrap your hands around his waist, pulling him forward, and softly press your lips against his. He kisses back with such love and gentleness that you just want to explode with emotion. He brings his hands through your hair and then pulls back, his hands now cupping your face.
"I love you," he whispers.
"I love you too, Mike."
