it’s actually so funny how challenging it is to write bona fide graphic, horny smut. like people don’t give smut writers enough credit. you are constantly running out of words to describe the same 2-4 body parts and same 4-6 motions. you are constantly attempting to do interesting and dynamic things in the prose with this extremely limited set of words. you are looking at your prose for the nastier bits and wondering if it actually sounds hot or if it just sounds goofy. you are then toning down your prose and then wondering if it now sounds tasteful or if it’s just boring. you do ctrl+F for the word “cock” and there are 37 instances of it in the doc but you hate the 1-2 acceptable synonyms so there’s nothing much you can do about it

1. Flip It, Reverse It (GO AU, Aziraphale/Crowley, E, complete)

The angel Crowley -- true name Gadriel, called Gadreel by the few angels who still remembered her somewhat sordid history -- stepped into the bookshop owned by the demon Aziraphale and closed the door behind her with a contented sigh.

2. The Ghost and Ms Fell (GO AU, Aziraphale/Crowley, E, incomplete)

Amelia Zinnia Fell was not having a good few months.

3. Girls' Night Out (ST: SNW, Chapel/Ortegas, M, complete)

They were at a bar, because that’s what they did when they were on shore leave on the same shift: whatever interesting tourism options a planet might have to offer in daytime, in the evening they would find a bar, preferably one with dancing, or maybe a club if they were feeling daring.

4. Cats Choose Us (GO, Aziraphale/Crowley, G, complete)

[Winter, 1800] It was a few months after Aziraphale had opened the shop, deep into winter, when Crowley showed up, bundled up so that only his glasses were visible between his top hat and the crimson scarf he’d wrapped around his face and neck.

5. Happily Ever After (GO AU, Aziraphale/Crowley, E, incomplete)

Happily ever after, all the stories had ended when Aziraphale was a pup.

6. The Weight of a Human Heart (MCU AU, Steve/Tony, M complete)

Tony still remembered the first time he'd lost someone he loved: it was his mother, and he was seventeen, and even with all his supposed genius, he couldn't save her from the cancer eating her up inside, not from the poison they sent after it that hollowed her out and left her pale and thin and in pain.

7. Halfway Across the Sea (MCU AU, Steve/Tony, E, complete)

Steve Rogers remembered the war, though he hadn't fought in it.

8. But Half a Fish (GO AU, Aziraphale/Crowley, E, incomplete)

The Fell family had lived in and operated the lighthouse at Angel’s Point since the town’s founding, and Aziraphale Fell was merely the last in a long line, trained practically from birth to keep the lamp lit and sailors safe from harm.

9. if thy feet be nimble and thy heart be light (GO AU, Aziraphale/Crowley, T, incomplete)

Aziraphale flipped the small hanging sign on the bookshop’s front door to closed with a sigh, shaking her head as she did so.

10. Keeping the British End Up (GO, Aziraphale/Crowley, E, complete)

Jaq DeVille, superspy, rounded the corridor to the prisoner block and looked around carefully, gun at the ready.

Conclusions:

Eh? I don't know. It seems like I start fewer fics with the first word(s) being the POV character's name than I thought, which is something, tho I definitely have a penchant for it. Most of these first lines don't feel terribly strong to me, so I'm pleasantly surprised that people don't seem to be put off by them. Uh, I also know that I am prone to really long sentences, but I didn't expect to see so much variation in the length of my starting sentences. Huh.

The superpower of being Eastern-European descent is that you are absolutely immune to anyone trying to convince you that Russian imperialism is somehow benign, lesser than other kinds of imperialism, etc.

Lots of you don’t have that should maybe listen to people from those countries (and even more so than those of us several generations into the diaspora, people living in them right now) about why that is! Because it’s clear that even experiencing other kinds of imperialism from other countries doesn’t inoculate you against the brain worms involved here. A lot of you are just total suckers for the idea that any imperialism that is not from the U.S./Western Europe or that positions itself as in opposition to those countries, is somehow OK or not-imperialism or a lesser form of it.

And not only is that just…not true, it also makes it clear that a lot of you don’t understand the root principles behind why imperialism is bad in the first place. If you can only see it as bad when it’s Country A doing it to Country B, then you don’t really get it in a more fundamental way. You’re not the “postcolonial,” “anti-imperial” thinker that you like to believe you are.
