Scientists at UC Riverside have demonstrated a new, RNA-based vaccine strategy that is effective against any strain of a virus and can be used safely even by babies or the immunocompromised.  Every year, researchers try to predict the four influenza strains that are most likely to be prevalent during the upcoming flu season. And every year, people line up to get their updated vaccine, hoping the researchers formulated the shot correctly. The same is true of COVID vaccines, which have been reformulated to target sub-variants of the most prevalent strains circulating in the U.S. This new strategy would eliminate the need to create all these different shots, because it targets a part of the viral genome that is common to all strains of a virus. The vaccine, how it works, and a demonstration of its efficacy in mice is described in a paper published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.  “What I want to emphasize about this vaccine strategy is that it is broad,” said UCR virologist and paper author Rong Hai. “It is broadly applicable to any number of viruses, broadly effective against any variant of a virus, and safe for a broad spectrum of people. This could be the universal vaccine that we have been looking for.”

we still get immediately shoved out of our immersion in tv shows or films when The Girl find a dead body and immediately shrieks - we just don't find it realistic because we're pretty confident most people would gasp rather than shriek (i.e. sharp inhale rather than sharp exhale) and it also feels unnecessarily (and predictably) misogynistic too, as men encountering corpses almost never do the same on screen
also of course please do tell us if you've actually encountered a corpse unexpectedly, because tumblr is absolutely a place where some people have done this thing and we love a good anecdote
suddenly imagining "burst into song" as a potential response

In my teens I didn’t want children. The thought of sharing my body reviled me. I found babies VERY off-putting. I didn’t see myself in the role as a mother. People would always chuckle and tell me I would grow out of being a tomboy and my body would make it more appealing.
Well, fast-forward 20 years and in a one in a million chance because of my PCOS and endo, I did end up pregnant. I thought about it long and hard. I did finally conclude that I would embark on this motherhood thing as a bit of a social experiment because I was with a partner I loved and trusted (not an easy thing). He never wanted to be a father, either, but we gave it a shot and while there have been struggles, it has been phenomenal being parents. You grow and learn a lot about yourself but it requires a tremendous amount of self-sacrifice that I wouldn’t wish on anyone in the world as it currently is for many of us.
Regardless, I count myself lucky and that’s even taking in to account life-altering gestational diabetes, crippling postpartum depression, literally giving up my career for almost a decade, and my body has changed in ways I can’t undo… I wouldn’t goad, coerce, or force anyone down this path any more than I would force someone to play Russian Roulette with a loaded gun. It’s more than just “awww!! But babies!” (Babies are still awful, but toddlers can be cool as hell). Community doesn’t look after one another like we used to and going through pregnancy/having a child is the most glorious and awful thing in a person’s life.
Don’t do this to kids.
stop telling your teenage daughters who say they don't want kids that they'll change their mind

We haven’t had a field trip in a while! Tradition calls for brown bag art when we do, though! MLP is circulating among the youth again. My youngest used to be ride or die for Pinkie Pie but now she’s all in on Rainbow Dash.
Gouache on brown paper.

Had some sketches sitting around since Suffer No Fools and passed some time last night finishing them. I included Big Man because he’s too nice to beat up his band mates when they strike out on their own :p

So, it's been about six or seven years since I did any archery. I kinda fell out of it because I was tired of getting hit on at the local archery range. And then I moved a couple times, each time farther away from a range.
But there's a horseback archery clinic coming up at the barn where I ride later this year, so I decided to break out the old recurve (and also bought an inexpensive Turkish horsebow) to get back into it ahead of that. Because horseback archery has been something I've wanted to do a long time.
Thankfully, there's a lot of BLM land around here in the desert. And there's several areas that are open for recreational shooting... which usually means firearms, yes. But also makes for a decent spot to set up for archery as well.
So I bought a portable field target and headed out. Picked a spot a little away from the folks shooting off rifles and set up. Not sure what they're shooting down the road behind the next hill, but it sounds illegal. Maybe tracers (illegal in CA). I give them lots of space.
Pull out my takedown recurve (Samick Sage, 25lb limbs), assemble it and get it all set up. Lined up with the target, remembered my form and anchor point, and took a shot.
And promptly thwacked my inner arm with the bowstring. OW. That's gonna bruise.
Ok, adjusted form. Shot again. Better. Still remember how to do it after all these years.
Ran through a couple rounds shooting, then swapped to the new Turkish bow (30lb draw weight). Promptly took the skin off my knuckle (you have to shoot off your hand on these type of bows). Got me in the ONE spot not protected by my old longbow glove. Note to self: tune bow better when I get home.
Shooting it Mediterranean draw right now, which is what I'm used to. Attempted an Asiatic thumb draw, but came out poorly. I need to study some more videos on the technique to get that dialed in better.
Not bad, though. It's been literally years since I shot a bow and it all came right back pretty quick. Aim still needs work, but I was getting decent grouping by the end. Just needs more practice to get back into the groove. I'll start going out maybe once a week to build up the proper muscles for this and work on my form and aim. Maybe after a month I might be able to pull my longbow (45lb draw, which requires a lot of working up to for me).
Oh, and I found a giant gallon bag of weed behind a rock. Someone's dead drop, no doubt. Almost thought about walking off with it, but I didn't fancy getting shot over somebody's shitty desert weed when I don't even care about weed in the first place.

Just another day in the desert. Things are weird out here.
