I've written a few times about Last Train Home because, really, as song, it's on point. And, I've viewed it as a potential reference to Mikey and, particularly, Richie. When I watched, I noted that the song started playing after Tina says to Richie in the back alley "Where you going to go, Richie?" when he storms out, talking about the delicate ecosystem. About how things are changing. Syd and Carmy are shifting too many things. This is Richie's chance to move forward, progress and learn to work through his grief or he's gotta go. But where?
Now, why have I never thought about this song through the lens of Syd and Carmy? Danged if I know 🤷🏽‍♀️. I will say, your meta makes so much sense. Carmy feeling as if he's out of luck and out of time certainly would provide more context to his fridge confession.
He's ruined something so important with Sydney that he just pledge to her only a few hours earlier. He doesn't deserve enjoyment and amusement. He doesn't deserve to have fun with Sydney. Carmy feels so out of sync since he met Syd. I dare to wonder if she's setting things into perspective for him and he doesn't know what to do.
This is his last train home. To Nat. To Richie. To Chicago. To Mikey. And now, to Sydney.
Sydney is on the last train home
Tumblr media
This clips little mention of a choo choo train reminded me of something.
At the end of Ceres after Carmy turned down Sydney's risotto dish, Last Train home is playing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sydney is what Carmy believes to be the fallen angel, she fell into The Beef to save it. But really she's just there because she fell behind on life. She feels out of luck and out of time. Her wishbone tattoo symbolizing her desire for good luck and her mother's car symbolizing her short time on earth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Carmy doesn't want to love her or listen to her and help her get to where she feels she needs to get (the stars, accolades etc) then he needs to let her go because she feels out of time to achieve her goals. Season 3 it's all on the line for her because she feels like she is giving it her all and it's finally being seen by her dad, and she can't let Carmy be the one to mess it up for her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She put her heart where it didn't belong by giving the dish to the food critic because she believed in it and loved it. And then things went wrong. Carmy also put his heart where it didn't belong and messed things up for himself by getting locked in the fridge. Sydney overheard him saying he's not even sure he's meant for this and he might not want to keep going, which made Sydney throw up. Sydney wants to know if he's actually going to quit on her or if he's hopping on The Bear Express. Season 3 is the last train for The Bear, they either make or they don't and it ends for Sydney, and everyone else.

I edited the 2x10 moment that included Daniela and Connor's shocked and almost scared reactions to Carmy's panic. While Sydney seems to be the most concerned. She's the first one to ask Carmy if he's okay in the walk in, she almost reprimanded Natalie for her comment. Sydney was not going to throw his procrastinating in calling the fridge guy back in his face.
While Carmy can't get to syd mentally or physically, he spirals out of control. But something about this moment is the first time Sydney listens to Carmy's panic attack, and she looks so worried - breaks my heart!
I think we're going to move past this walk-in situation in season 3, Sydney's reactions to this situation show she's more anxious than angry about Carmy's mental state.
That's what I want to see for season 3. I want to see how much they care for each others well being and what it means when they express their deep care for one another freely.

Thank you for this! We do not speak about Ebra enough...
what do you think is going to happen to ebraheim in s3 :(
Tumblr media
Grief and loss is a big part of the series with the loss of Mikey obviously, Sydney's mom, and now Marcus' mom, but we don't talk enough about Ebra who objectively has had it worst and seen horrific things. Everyone loves to talk about how Carmy is so traumatized, but Ebra literally lived through a Civil War.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is a refugee from Somalia, we've seen him share little bits of information about his past, like his family meal suqaar, or when they were talking about forming a brigade he mentioned his time being in a brigade during the Somali Civil War. In Review when he's helping Richie after he got stabbed, he tells him the story of Black Hawk down battle of Mogadishu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He definitely has some level of PTSD, he didn't want to wear a uniform at culinary school, and Tina had to reassure him that it "was not that kind of uniform" and then when she said there were a lot of Sydney's in culinary school he told her "Don't look them in the eyes." But honestly seems to handle things pretty well and is generally unphased by the chaos of the kitchen. Carmy clearly also has some PTSD from his traumatic upbringing that makes him panic, and I think they both find comfort in the kitchen but in different ways. Ebra enjoys the chaos and loudness while Carmy is about the perfectionism and order.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was also arguably one of the nicer people to Sydney from the start and respected her quickly, I think because she reminded him of Tina in a way with how assertive she is but still looks out for people. He's also a feminist icon. He also knew they needed help and Carmy wasn't cutting it. He quickly saw the good in her by how she was giving confidence to Marcus. He was the one reading the review and being excited for Sydney and for The Beef getting positive recognition. He was happy to see it change for the better because he cares a lot about The Beef.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But seeing turn into something completely different and riskier with The Bear is scary for him and he didn't really feel like he was changing with the place and felt like he was getting left behind. He was very close with Mikey and worked there for decades, so hopefully we see them together in Mikey's flashbacks. He was also very worried about Carmy messing up the place and the system. I'm sure we'll get more Tina Ebra shenanigans, I think Ebra is a bit of enigma who is always going to be throwing in random bits of his dark lore. He's going to be in charge of the sandwich window in the back when it opens. He was the only one still wearing The Beef uniform, he's an embodiment of the past. But it's not just The Beef that is changing, the entire neighborhood is. I think the window in the back and the main kitchen are going to kind of battle it out. The Beef already has an established clientele and regulars, which are quite a different demographic than the people who are likely to dine at The Bear and it's going to be interesting to see how they all fit in together in Season 3.

Sydney lights a fire for Carmy
Tumblr media
The first thing that happens in the entire series is the sounds of the stove igniter clicking to start a fire, while Carmy is dreaming.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sydney brought the heat and fire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really do not think they spent that much screen time explaining the fire suppression system to not put it into work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tina turning up Sydney's literal heat caused problems between them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the pilot light is out, Sydney starts a fire. He was worried about the heat on the stove and the grease trap catching fire right before trying Sydney's dish, then Sydney left and a grease fire breaks out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Sydney heard back from Carmy, she almost burned her onions. When Sydney first came to his place, she almost lit his pants on fire. Syd and Carmy have a slow burn. Their fire is increasing. They tried to suppress it and for a while it worked. But the flames are not out and it's going to reignite.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With Claire, he thought there was a genuine spark and some fire, but it was mostly literally fireworks. Artificial, planned, pretty to look at, but ultimately not a practical source of energy that he needs. Fireworks are also not legal in Illinois. He needed a real fire for the restaurant and the fireworks were not going to cut it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He has an energy problem, which is brought up when he was out with Claire all day. We know Fak fixed some of their electrical problems for the fire suppression by rewiring things at the last minute, but if they now get too much amperage that puts them at risk for electrical fires. I would not be surprised if there's some sort of issue that causes the fire again. Sydney gives Carmy fire, they just have to embrace it and harness it.

Why is “Angel of Mine” by Monica playing on loop in my mind as I think about Carmy? Just change every “boy” or “girl” in the lyrics and it’s him.

i think sydney and carmen don’t go out to eat for date night because they’re chefs. why would they go to red lobster if they literally are (the much better version of) red lobster.
i see them making dates out of small things. getting coffee and walking around the city. thrifting and picking out ridiculous outfits for each other. hunting for vintage stuff on facebook marketplace on their patio (this is more so carmen’s thing and sydney just watches him with her feet in his lap). taking baths together while watching an old cooking show. i just know they have fun in low key ways.

Just saw a commercial for the HULU and Disney+ Bundle with The White Stripes “We’re Going to Be Friends” playing. OF COURSE, the first clip shown is Sydney and Carmy meeting. Ugh! 😑 Why? The next shot is of the Mandalorian and Grogu and then Moana.
I’m sorry but these three shows/movies and main characters aren’t thinking: Hm, I can tell that we are gonna be friends.
Each pair shown are dynamic, complicated and so laden with strife from jump. Friendship isn’t upfront! Trust, care, and shared goals are the names of the game. Friendship may be a foundation understood later on but the whole structure is love - committing to something so profound without understanding.
Showing the moment Carmen meets Sydney, having that song playing, is so shenanigans.

Another thing about the labels. Sydney is caught on Carmy and what he labels claire; she says this is the most essential thing Carmy needs to decide on. But the conversation is truly reserved for herself, and for a moment, it doesn't matter if they fail or pass the suppression test or the chaos menu; he needs to define the girl who's taking away time from their relationship.
From what Sydney says, girlfriends—a companion, a girl Carmy is close to—should be the one who looks at such a private thing as the menu; it's Carmy's creations, a girl who's part of that process should be a companion. Claire, the friend, sees a part of Carmy reserved for Sydney. Clare sees his vulnerabilities and fears. She's seeing and hearing about his complicated past. He's opening up to someone else, not Sydney, which poses a conflict that Sydney demands to be solved instantly.
We believe that Carmy initially passed the suppression test by correctly identifying Claire as his girlfriend, but the following episode shows that he made the wrong decision in choosing her as his partner.
I wonder if Sydney is aware of how Carmy feels about her. I believe she understands that when he speaks to her, there is a deeper meaning behind his words. For season 3, she deserves clarity in their relationship.

I grew up hearing an eclectic mix of music. A song I loved growing up made me think:
If The Bear could have been a musical for one single moment, Carmen in the walk-in embodies this. PLEASE NOTE: It’s not just the lyrics- it’s the guitar solo. Listen to it. That solo sounds like Carmy to me.
For your listening pleasure “I’m So Afraid” by Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac)
https://youtu.be/6OrtLxsqSic?si=WgLPI4nH2pnoQsqU
youtube
Lyrics:
I been alone
All the years
So many ways to count the tears
I never change
I never will
I'm so afraid the way I feel
Days when the rain and the sun are gone
Black as night
Agony's torn at my heart too long
So afraid
Slip and I fall and I die
I been alone
Always down
No one cared to stay around
I never change
I never will
I'm so afraid the way I feel
Days when the rain and the sun are gone
Black as night
Agony's torn at my heart too long
So afraid
Slip and I fall and I die
How I feel
Days when the rain and the sun are gone
Black as night
Agony's torn at my heart too long
So afraid
Slip and I fall and I die
Again, listen to the guitar solo all the way through. I beg you.

“my mum has a saying: every book has its time, and not every time is the right time for every book. that doesn't mean you'll NOT read them, just not now, and that's completely fine.”
@owlsinathens shared this with me about books she gifted me as I apologized for not be further along in the readings as I thought I should. Because of my own traumas with “you better be grateful” regardless of what precipitated the “gift” from parents and the expectation that I SHOULD utilize fully what has been given no matter what unless you “want to be ungrateful”, I’ve put pressure on myself to knock out the series.
Books shouldn’t be knocked out.
They are pure wonderment- good, neutral or bad. These worlds should be cherished. I didn’t have that luxury growing up - to cherish stillness, family, others, or myself.
Literature in many of its forms, including fanfics, allowed me a safe escape. It allowed me the chance to express, process, scream, learn and bandage many things in my life over the last 25 years. (Note: acknowledging that I’ve been escaping so much since I was 10 is quite telling.)
What I’m trying to say is that there are great people and great books (and great fanfics) that should be given the time they need. No pressure. No expectations. No obligations. Just enjoyment.
Life lessons come from anywhere. Tumblr has been my most caring tutor.

Okay. So…
What if Sydney leaves? What if she focuses on herself? What if she realizes that she doesn’t need this messiness?
What is Carmy realizes that he’s the problem? That he’s his brother and no one needs him? What if he believes that he’ll do better, believe in his staff, support their talent, and then realize that he’s “null and void”?
What if he encourages Syd’s talent and promise? And in doing so he’s preparing for his replacement? That he’s replaceable? That no one needs or wants him once this restaurant gets going? What if Carmy gives his shares to Sydney once he’s sure that the restaurant is stable and secure? What if Carmy, once getting Sydney a star, decides that he’s no longer a worthwhile cog?
What if Sydney sees this and decides she can’t care about Carmy anymore - personally? What if Sydney decides that using Carmen’s drive is more important than working on their partnership?
What if the OG crew (Nat, Ritchie, Marcus, Tina, Ebra, Sweeps, Angel, Miguel, Fak) realizes that the rift is a chiasm? What if sides are taken and, though they respect both, it’s obvious that Carmy can’t be fully there? What if they can’t trust him even if they desperately want to? What if they finally accept that Carmen is struggling so much and he’s starting to remind them of Mickey?
What if Carmen fully shuts down and we see him return to his restaurant/compulsive/self-harming/obsessive/attempting to cope chef ways? What if Carmy goes back to fully living for others in the sense of his actions?
What if Sydney allows herself to take over a business? What if Sydney realizes that she doesn’t need Carmy but wants him? What if she fully acknowledges the difference and turns internally? What if Syd supports, educates and encourages the other chefs? What if Sydney becomes part of the family? What if she finds a semblance of balance?
What if Syd and Carmy find themselves functioning apart? What if they make it work regardless of their on wellbeing? What if Sydney gets her star and Carmy leaves?
What if they don’t reconcile? What if these two remain as “these two”?
Thank you for reading my spiral.

Shout out to all the Black ppl that can no longer participate directly in the fandom they love because of the stresses of racism 👍🏾 you contain multitudes of value and I'm sorry that the color of your skin and the power of your voice makes people not want to acknowledge that.
