Okay, yes. 2017 sucked. But 2018 is an opportunity to do something incredible

One way or another, this will be a pivotal year for racial justice, immigration, voting rights, healthcare, education, and LGBTQ+ equality. So this year we all need to step up and commit to whatever political and social good we can handle. 

That’s the idea behind the first ever Art Action Day this Saturday, January 20.

What is Art Action Day?

Art Action Day is an opportunity to speak out and make a commitment to action in 2018. With our friends at The Federation, we’re asking you to post about your vision for 2018, and—more importantly—how you’re committing to making that future a reality.

On Saturday we’ll signal boost your posts on and off Tumblr to inspire others.

How you can participate:

You can draw, make a gif, write a song or a poem—anything you want! The prompt is simple:

What do you want the headlines and history books to say about 2018? And what will you do to make it happen?

Maybe it’s helping to pass the DREAM Act or electing a gender-balanced Congress. Maybe it’s ending the stigma around mental illness. If we all commit to doing one thing this year, 2018 will be a very good year.

We are not Evil

Slytherin. What comes to your mind?

Badbootie witches and wizards? Draco Malfoy? Villainy?

Want to know what comes to my mind? Me.

I am a Slytherin. I am proud. Yes, we have Dark Wizards. Yes, we have a bit more than the others. But you want to know why?

Because we have ambition. Oh yes, we love being ambitious. Got 3 essays due in three months? Done in the first. Being in a race? You can bet that we’ll do anything to win.

We are cunning. Us snakes are sneaky. You can be as sure as Hermione Granger that we’ll study our butts off for the test, but we will not hesitate to look over for half a second for that one answer.

This is why we have more Dark Wizards. We dare. We dare to achieve what we want, because no one can separate our beliefs from us. Yes, we have Dark Wizards. But, like snakes, not all of us are venomous.

We are not all evil. There are some of us who act like Hufflepuffs, some who act more like a Ravenclaw, there are even some who act like Gryffindors. That is a Slytherin.

The “Hufflepuff” Slytherins are loyal and hardworking. They will stay up all night working on the Potions project due in a fortnight so they can follow around their worried best friend’s boy/girlfriend to see if they’re up to no good. 

The “Ravenclaw” Slytherins are the ones who have a strict schedule, the ones with the scarily good ability to find out secrets. They won’t hesitate to safeguard those secrets or throw them out to the public, depending on what exactly you did to them. 

The “Gryffindor” Slytherins are polite, but reckless. They’ll stand up in the middle of the Great Hall and shout and hex hex you if you hurt their friends, not caring how many detentions they get because you don’t mess with snakes. 

We are Slytherins. We are not evil. We are powerful beings that are usually feared because of our ancestors, those of our kind. Yes, there are venomous snakes, like the Rattlesnake, but there are the non-lethal ones, like the Garden snake. So the next time you want to call us evil, think twice. 

We are not evil. We are snakes, beautiful and misunderstood. But we will not hesitate to strike if you attack. You best understand that before speaking around snakes.
