Y/N sat in the great hall, she opened her Care For Magical Creatures book, studying for the upcoming exam involving Unicorns. It’s now her sixth year at Hogwarts and her goal was to master the class. She loved the creatures and loved being around them. As she was immersed in her book she didn’t realize the pair of eyes burning into her. Her first year when she was sorted into Hufflepuff she made her goal to excel in her studies and pass all her exams. If she wasn’t sorted into Hufflepuff she would have been sorted into Ravenclaw, that’s what her friends always tell her. She loves Hogwarts, she loved her friends, and she loved being in Hufflepuff. She loves love. She cared for everyone and always shows kindness and respect for anyone she meets even when the feelings aren’t mutual. That is why she was sorted into Hufflepuff, her warm heart.
Her kindness is also taken for granted. Ever since she was little. Y/N was raised by her Grandmother who is a muggle. Her parents were both killed by Death Eaters, her Grandmother took her in and taught her everything she needed to know about the wizardly world despit being a muggle. At the age of twelve she was given her letter from Hogwarts and ever since she has been following the footsteps of her parents who were both Hufflepuffs.
“Y/N…someone has had their eye on you.” It was Meri. Meri was the first friend she made at Hogwarts. The two girls were both scared little girls getting on the zhogwarts express. Y/N closed her book and turned around, she met the dark eyes of Marcus Flint. She turned back around and looked at her friend.
“He most likely wants me to do an assignment for him.” Y/N told her. At seventeen most girls her age were starting to take interest in boys. Y/N wasn’t an exception, she had her crushes, only the different between she and other girls were those crushes never shared the same feelings. She isn’t pretty, she isn’t small and petite like most girls her age. She was short, she was chubby, her hair was rarely ever done.
“I don’t think so. This look seems different.”
“And what look could he possibly giving me? We have never spoken to each other before, he’s pretty popular within his house, and also a year older.”
“Don’t forget to add rough around the edges…Slytherin, vile, rude…the list goes on.” Y/N looked down and smiled. “Well you must have done something to catch his attention.”
“I couldn’t imagine what I couldn’t have done…I do need to see Hagrid about my next exam.” Y/N stood up and picked up her book. “I will see you at the Quidditch match later?“ Y/N asked.
“I’ll save your seat.” Meri replied with a smile.
The Quidditch match was intense. Slytherin versus Hufflepuff. Normally Slytherin would easily be able to beat Hufflepuff, but not today. Marcus Flint wasn’t happy. He wasn’t understand why his teammate were letting these Hufflepuffs get past their every good play. He got angry, he started to get aggressive.
“Flint is ready to end this for good!“ Lee’s echoes throughout the field. Y/N wasn’t a fan of Quidditch, she didn’t like how violent and dangerous it got.
“We could win this!“ Meri shouted, y/N turned to her and nodded her head. The two girls were sitting in the front row, both being pushed against the railing as the crowd cheered. It was crazier than usual, usually their team would be losing, but because they are winning, it’s pure chaos. Y/N was being pushed forward, she started to get a little nervous, the thought of falling was something she wanted to think of but with everyone standing up and trying to fight for the front row. She looked out and saw that Flint was close to scoring, she was trying to back up but the more she tried, the worse she was getting pushed.
“Flint is about to score, can they block him?!” Was all she heard before s student behind her roughly nudged her, she lost her footing and fell forward. It happened so fast, she felt a hand try to reach for her, Meri. She felt her stomach drop as she began to fall. She closed her eyes and let out a scream. The impact to the ground never came, instead she landed in a pair of arms. She slowly opened her eyes, she was floating in the air. She instantly wrapped her arms around her rescuer's neck.
Marcus didn’t notice what was happening. He heard commotion but figured it was the crowd cheering. It wasn’t till he flew up and was about to score that he saw her dangling. He was close, he was close to scoring the winning point. He wasn’t going to lie, he thought about making the score. He shook his head, let out a growl, and quickly flew to her just in time.
The arena was silent.
“Bring her down Flint!“ It was the voice of Madam Hooch. Flint with one hand around her waist and the other on the broom, he flew down to the ground. She looked at him, tears in her eyes. He stared back at her, still holding her by the waist. Madam Hooch interrupted their moment by pulling Y/N off the broom and to her feet.
“T…thank you.” Y/N thanked Marcus, he didn’t reply.
“Good work Flint.” Madam Hooch added.
Y/N was embarrassed. She was scared to see anyone. Never bad that happened before and yet it happened to her. The whole school saw her almost fall to her death. She found herself most comfortable sitting in the courtyard. It was dinner time so there was no one there, or so she thought. She opened her book and began to read, continuing her studies of the Unicorns.
“That was quite a show.” A voice announced. She got startled and tossed her book in the air, thankfully the person caught it. “Very timid.” He joked. Marcus.
“I’m sorry…I…thank you for today…you saved my life.” She stood up to retrieve her book, when she went to reach for it, he placed it above his head. She looked up at him in confusion.
“I feel like I deserve more than just an apology.” He taunted. She didn’t like where this conversation was going.
“I…I am not sure what else-“
“You know exactly what I mean.”
“I need my book.” She replied. “Please.” She reached for the book which was in the air. He moved it away, causing her to fall into his chest. He looked down at her, he was attracted to her innocence, her naive thoughts on everything.
“I threw the match because of you.”
“It wasn’t my fault Marcus…I am grateful for you and yes you do deserve more than a simple thank you.” That’s what he wanted to hear, but that wasn’t what he was going to get. “I would love to treat you to a trip to Hogsmeade…write a paper for you-“ He knew he had to approach her differently, most girls would be giving in to him, she was going to be a challenge…Marcus never loses.
“Hogsmeade it is then, Saturday.” She nodded her head. He lowered the book and handed it out to her, she reached but he quickly grabbed her wrist. She looked at him, his grip was tight. He leaned his head down, his lips right beside her ear. “You are making the right choice.” He whispered.
It was Saturday and Y/N was dressed and ready to meet Marcus. She was nervous, she wasn’t sure what she had gotten herself into. She has heard many stories about Marcus, she never listened to any of them, never fed into the,, and never judged him for anything, she never talked to him before. She did believe one thing that what said, he can be cruel and vile. She has seen him in the act. He bullied other students, had a reputation for getting violent and physical. She didn’t mention to Meri or her other friends about the outing, so she decided to keep it to herself. She looked at herself in the long mirror. Her choice was a light blue plain dress, heavy stockings, brown small half length boots, and a dark brown trench coat. Her hair was down with loose curls and a beanie to keep her ears warm.
She was ready.
She loves Hogsmeade. All the shops, the people, the atmosphere, it was fun. She never imagined she would be here with Marcus, his hand holding hers while leading them through the crowds of people. She had to admit, holding his hand made her feel warm inside, it was larger than her own, and warm. He led her into Three broomsticks Inn. She has been there a couple times, she enjoys the shops more rather than the pubs. He took them to an empty table towards the back and the two sat down. Y/N looked around, she didn’t like that they were secluded, but she went along with it.
“What can I get you two?” It was an older woman, she eyed the two teens up. Y/N looked at Marcus.
“Two Butterbeers.” He told her, the woman nodded and left them alone. “Haven’t been here before?“ He asked Y/N.
“A couple times…a couple years ago.” She admitted. “I…I prefer the shops.” She answered.
“Hogs Head is better but uh…I don’t think that is your cup of tea.” She nodded her head agreeing. “I have been trying to figure out why I haven’t spoken to you before this.”
“I didn’t think you even knew I existed.” She admitted. Marcus knew she did, he knew exactly who she was, who her parents were. He knew he could control her, he knew he could be the one in control, which is what he liked, what he wanted.
“That’s a silly thing to think about love.” She looked down, it wasn’t silly. She knew it had nothing to do with her appearance. He wanted something. She doesn’t have any experience when it comes to dating but she wasn’t completely naive.
“I suppose so.” She looked at him and smiled. “I…no one has ever asked me to come here…other than my friends.” She explained.
“You mean as a date?” She nodded her head. “So I am your first.” The woman returned with two large glasses. Y/N slid hers close and took a sip.
After their drinks Marcus suggested walking around and looking at the shops. The one glass of Butterbeer was definitely enough to relax her. Marcus extended his arm out to her and she gently wrapped hers around. She had a smile plastered on her face, as they began their walk. She loved it, she loved seeing all the new items the stores had, the people, just the atmosphere. Marcus looked down at her. She was different then most of the girls he has dated. She was quiet, she didn’t cling, and she didn’t talk his ear off.
“Marcus look.” She took his hand and led him this time. Magical Menagerie, a pet shop for magical creatures. In the front display window we’re Kneazles, baby Kneazles. Y/N loves the creature and planned on buying one the moment she had enough money too. “Aren’t they adorable?” She looked up at him.
“Expensive.” Was his reply. She nodded her head agreeing.
“My grandma…she has been trying to save enough money for me to buy one…one day.” Y/N gently tapped the class. Marcus usually dated girls who were on an upper status, their families came from money like himself. Y/N was the opposite. She lives in the muggle world with just her grandmother.
“Come it’s getting late.” He ordered her, she nodded her head and the two made their way back to Hogwarts.
The two arrived back to the school, it was just about dark outside and starting to get cold.
“I had fun.” Y/N said. She meant it too, she thought today was going to go differently, but it was actually nice.
“I still think you owe something.” He smirked at her, she thought for a moment, what else could she possibly owe him? She went on the date and even paid.
“I…I am not sure what else I could do-“
“A date usually ends with a kiss.” He informed her.
“Oh…Marcus I had a great time , I really did but I don’t…I can’t.” She told him, she looked down, suddenly embarrassed.
“And why can’t you?” He was suddenly getting upset and she could sense that. That wasn't her intention.
“I just can’t…I really am sorry.” He suddenly snatched her wrist. She was taken back and tried to pull away but his grip was tight and pain full. She looked up at him, fear filled her eyes. Just what he wanted.
“You would be either severely injured or dead if it wasn’t for me…a simple kiss wouldn’t hurt you.” He growled.
“It’s not just a simple kiss…it’s my first kiss and I will not let just anyone take that away from me-“ She was cut off by his lips smashing into hers. He placed his hand on her waist to pull her closer into him. She tried to turn away but he released her wrist and cradled the one side of her face to keep her from facing away from him. His kiss deepened as she began to lose balance and fall into him. She closed her eyes, accepting what was happening, his warmth began to feel good against her, his cologne was intoxicating. He pulled away and looked down, her eyes still closed, like she was in a daze. This is what he liked to see, this is exactly what he wanted, and he wanted more. He wanted to see what else he could make her do, only he had to take his time, not be greedy.
“First kiss huh?” He teased. She opened her eyes, coming back to reality. “I would have never imagined.” She moved away from him and refused to look at him.
“Goodnight Marcus.” She wrapped her arms around herself and turned away.
“Good night.”
The next few days she made sure to avoid Marcus. She was angry with him, she was angry with herself. Once again she was taken advantage of and she allowed it to happen. She was sick of the treatment, she was sick of how vulnerable she could be. How vulnerable he made her. What was more upsetting was she couldn’t stop thinking about the kiss. The way he held her, the way he didn’t tease her for the way she felt, feeling his arm wrapped fully around her body. The way his lips taste, the way he pulled her into him, the way he could have gone further and she wouldn’t have stopped him.
“Y/N…if you want to master this creature I need your full attention.” The voice of Professor Hagrid invaded her thoughts. She turned to Professor Hagrid. Today he was allowing her to attempt to ride BuckBeak, his Hippogriff. She wasn’t fond of the idea of being in the air, but it was part of her studies.
“I apologize…I am ready.” She told him. Professor Hagrid handed her a piece of dead rat, the offering. BuckBeak instantly smelled the dead rodent, he lifted his head and took interest. She carefully approached, slowly and carefully. She leaned her body down into a bow position and placed the rodent In the air. She heard the footsteps of the creature coming towards her. Her hand remained completely still.
“That’s it…go ahead BuckBeak.” The Hippogriff sniffed her hand and within seconds snatched the rat. Y/N carefully lifted her head, BuckBeak was mimicking her, his head leaned down, she earned his trust. Y/N turned to Professor Hagrid who was clapping his hands and smiling. “Let’s take the ride.” He lifted Y/N up onto the Hippogriff and before Y/N could say anything she was galloping, holding onto the creature's neck. She closed her eyes as she felt him begin to flap his wings and descend into the air.
She was flying.
It wasn’t till she was back in the courtyard catching up studying that she realized she had made a mistake, only she didn’t know this. She was so immersed in her book that she didn’t realize till the book was ripped from hands and thrown onto the ground. She looked up in shock when Marcus was hovering over her.
“Avoiding me?” He spat.
“N…no I-“ He pulled her to her feet by her arm. “That hurts!” She shouted.
“Don’t lie to me!” He shouted back. The truth was he wanted to see her, he needed to see her but couldn’t find her. Ever since he kissed her, he couldn’t get her off his mind. He instantly felt regret when he saw her eyes fill with tears. He released her arm and stepped away from her.
“What is wrong with you?” She asked in a whisper. He ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. He didn’t have an answer. “I…I was avoiding you.” She admitted.
“W…why?”
“You took advantage of me…you stole something that might mean nothing to you or others but means a lot to me.” The tears slowly rolled down her rosy cheeks. “What is worse is…I…I liked the kiss.”
“Why is that worse?” He felt offended.
“I know the type of person you are Marcus, all the rumors, I’ve seen you…I don’t want that.” He felt angry again, he felt angry because she was right. His reputation wasn’t the best.
“You believe those rumors?”
“You proved to me that maybe they are really true. The way you yell at me, grab me…you are a cruel person Marcus.”
“Is that really what you think? What if I said you were a weak Witch born from two weaker ones that couldn’t even fight against He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named? Huh? Had to live like a Muggle and pretend everyday that the world is a bloody rain of sunshine!” She looked up at him, not saying a word, just taking in everything he was shouting to her. “Maybe I should have let you fall.”
“If that’s what you think Marcus…then that’s fine.” She walked over to where her book was and picked it up. He quickly moved so that he was in front of her.
“It’s not fine, you and I both know that.”
“What does it matter? You hardly know me and I hardly know you. Whatever intentions you had…you can forget about it.”
“Yeah I had intentions, I admit that. The other night when I kissed you…seeing you so…the effect I had on you…I want more of that.” She wasn’t sure what to say, how to react, how to feel. “I want more of you.”
“You are going to hurt me.” He moved closer to her. “No…I have to go.” He gently reached for her hand but she moved away. “I have to go.” She repeated.
Y/N didn’t sleep at all, she couldn’t. Constantly tossing and turning. What did Marcus mean? Did he have feelings for her? Real feelings? She couldn’t understand the sudden interest. She got out of bed, unable to handle the restlessness. She knew what would help her. She snuck out of the common room and outside of the castle, she needed air, fresh air. It wasn’t till reached the whomping willow that she noticed a figure. She wanted to turn around, scared of who it could be, but then she recognized who it really was. The tall figure.
“Marcus?” She announced herself.
“W…what are you doing here?” He asked, startled.
“I…I couldn’t sleep.” She told him.
“Find somewhere else to go.” He was still upset with her. She looked down, she was upset with him too, but still she had to yearn to be near him. Ever since we kissed her.
“Why did you take interest in me Marcus?” He looked away.
“I love control and I knew I could get it from you. Your control.” She felt her heart drop. “When I kissed you, the face you made, the moment of I could dominate you and you couldn’t do anything about it.”
“That’s all this was? For you to tell me what to do?” Marcus shook his head no.
“You got it all wrong, love-“
“Do I? Marcus, what you are saying sounds absolutely mad. You can’t have control over someone like they are your pet.”
“I don’t want just someone. I want you. I want you.” He quickly approached her and wrapped his arms around her waist, this time she didn’t pull away. “I want your curves, I want your lips against mine, I want all of you.” He whispered. She was taken back. Marcus Flint told her all these things and she didn’t know what to do. She gently laid her hands on his chest. Her gentle touch gave him goosebumps. He wasn’t used to soft touches.
“What you want…I can’t.” She looked up at him.
“Just let me. Let me have you…emotionally and physically.” She shook her head no. This isn’t what she wanted, this wasn’t normal. She never thought Marcus was this kind of person, did he treat other girls like this? He placed his forehead against hers. She felt something, being in his arms like this, being so close to him, her brain was shouting at her to leave, to push him off you and leave. Your heart was telling you to give him a chance, see where this could lead. What was she supposed to do?
“What will happen?” She asked him. He pulled away and looked down at her. “I…is this a relationship?”
“It can be if that’s what you want. You will be mine.”
“If I agree to this…to being with you…what will it really mean?” She wanted to know what she would be getting herself into, she wanted to know she would be safe. He cupped her face gently, forcing her to look at him.
“It will mean you will do as I say, you will be by my side, you will be loyal to only me.” She gulped a bit. She placed her hands gently on top of his. “Just…just let me have you.” He sounded so desperate, so needy. Was it really him who held the power or was it her? She nodded her head. He let out a small sigh of relief.
“I’ll do it.” She told him, he leaned down and placed his lips on hers, pulling her closer into him while wrapping his arms around her. She closed her eyes and kissed him back, his eagerness made her nervous but at the same time it felt right.
There will be multiple parts to this story, I have so many ideas and I feel like I can create so much more:)

Gally x Plus Size Reader Part 2!
It has been what felt like years since they left the Glade. Captured by WCKD, traveling through the Scrotch, losing Winston on the way to the Flare, separated from Minho and Teresa who betrayed them and worked for WCKD, and now they were being taken in a van. They did meet new faces along the way Brenda and Jorge. Y/N loved Brenda, she was strong, brave, everything she wasn’t. She loved the way Jorge protected Brenda.
“Who are these guys?” Newt asked, referring to the people in masks who were driving the vans.
“I don’t think they are the good guys.” Frypan answered. Y/N. Nervously looked towards the two masked men in the front seat, one in the passenger was armed with a large gun.
“It’s alright, we will be fine.” Brenda assured Y/N, Y/N nodded her head, putting on a fake smile. Times like this she wished she was in the Glade, tending to the animals, enjoying the sounds of the birds in the trees. Lately, that was all she thought about. The ones they lost too. Alby, Chuck, Winston, Minho, and sometimes Gally.
“I think we are stopping.” Thomas spoke. The van came to a harsh stop, everyone almost falling from the seats. The back doors swung up and another masked man appeared with a gun pointing right at Y/N. She felt tears forming in her eyes, she was terrified. He motioned for them to come out, without hesitation they did.
“Who are you guys?” Thomas asked. No one was answering, a crowd of people were watching, they were just outside the city, the city they needed to get in to save Minho. The masked man who let them out of the van lowered his gun, he reached for his mask and slowly took it off.
“Hey Greenie.” It was as if they had seen a ghost.
“Gally?” Newt asked. Without warning Thomas charged at Gally, punching him in the face. Newt and Frypan quickly retrieved him, holding him back from hurting him again.
“I deserved that.” Gally spoke, rubbing his face where he was just hit.
“Are you part of WCKD too?” Thomas spat.
“No, the opposite. I work for the Right Arm. Basically a rebellion against WCKD.” Gally explained. “They rescued me after you guys were taken back to the maze.”
“Who is the Right Arm?” Brenda asked.
“We are led by Vince, we want to take down WCKD.”
“They have Minho.” Thomas told him. “We need to get into the city to save him.” Gally thought for a moment.
“I have a way, but we need to talk to Vince first.” Y/N gently grabbed onto Newt’s hand.
“Can we trust him?” Y/N whispered to him.
“I don’t think we have many options, love” Newt told her, gripping her hand back. She looked at Gally. All those feelings for him were starting to reappear. He looked older, more mature, and more handsome.
The way to where they had to meet Vince wasn’t what she was expecting. She didn’t expect to be walking through a huge warehouse, guards from the Right Arm armed with guns at every corner, she was expecting so many to be a part of this rebellion.
Gally knocked on the door and within seconds it was open. Gally gave the signal and they entered the room. He was greeted by so many faces, so many smiles. It was nothing like the Glade, where everyone feared him.
“You brought company Gally?” A man approached, he had long dark blonde hair, a bread to match. He must be Vince
“I know them from back in the Glade, they are good people who need help. One of our friends was taken by WCKD and we need to get into the city to get him back.”
“An ally of Gally’s is an ally of the Right Arm.” Vince greeted. “Now getting into the city, there is a way, it’s not safe, but it’s a way. We have to wait till nightfall so please rest, we will get you food, and even fresh clothes.”
“Is that her?” Vince asked Gally as they were preparing to enter the city. Gally looked over at Y/N who was sitting with Brenda and Frypan. She didn’t look relaxed like everyone else was at the moment, she looked exhausted, she looked sad.
“Yeah it is.” Gally answered.
“When are you going to talk to her?”
“I don’t think she will want to talk to me.”
“Take my advice with heart, don’t miss any opportunities. Not in the world we live in now.” The two men noticed she was getting up.
Y/N needed air, she needed to get out of the room and outside. She wandered around till finally she found a door that led to a balcony, she quickly opened it and rushed out. She placed her hands on the railing that overlooked the city. The tears finally came out, she bowed her head and cried.
“Y/N…” She jumped at the voice and turned around. “Hey.” Gally.
“I-I just need a minute.” She sniffled. “I couldn’t b-breath in there.”
“It’s alright.” He told her. She shook her head.
“No it’s not. N-none of this is a-alright. We lost Winston, in the Scorch. He-he got the flare-“ The tears were growing by the second. “He asked for a gun and for us to l-leave.” Gally looked down. “I thought outside of the Glade there would be this beautiful world…b-but it is just a cruel Hell.”
“That’s why the Right Arm is here, to stop WCKD and create Safe Haven. There everyone will live freely, like in the Glade.”
“What if they can’t be stopped?”
“Everyone has a weakness including WCKD.”
“And how many more people do we have to lose in order to stop them?”
“I don’t know Y/N!” He snapped, she jumped a little at his outburst. “I don’t have the answers you want to hear and I’m not going to lie to make you feel better.” The old Gally was starting to show the one she left at the Glade.
“I’m going back in.” She pushed past him and returned inside where she sat beside Brenda in silence as they devised a plan to get Minho.
“When we get back that is when we will start the real quest to get inside and save your buddy.” Vince said to the group. Gally, Newt, and Thomas were entering the city from the undergrounds to get Teresa. She was the ticket to getting Minho back alive. Y/N gently helped Newt pack what he would need for the mission, her hands shaking.
“What is wrong?” Newt asked her.
“I don’t think we should split up.” She told him. He looked at her with a soft smile.
“We won’t be long, it’s just getting Teresa and coming back.” He assured her.
“There isn’t any other way? So we can stay together?” She felt the tears form. The moment he saw the tears he pulled her into a hug. She nuzzled her face into his chest.
“We will be alright, Love.” She pulled away and looked up at him. “I think the one you should be talking to is Gally.” He added. She gently pushed him away and shook her head.
“He hasn’t changed at all.” She looked over at him, he was speaking with Thomas, his face was serious, almost angry.
“Oh he has, you’ll see it eventually.”
“Gally talks a lot about you.” Vince said approaching Y/N who was sitting at a table waiting impatiently for the boys to return. “I pictured you two being reunited differently.”
“I…I didn’t expect to be reunited with him.” She told him.”the last time I saw him…” She looked down. “A lot has changed.”
“He felt the same way. The poor kid was on his deathbed, repeating your name like a broken record.” Y/N wiped the silent tears from her eyes. “I lost someone close to me, someone I promised to protect. The regrets I felt after were unbearable but one thing I told Gally that I will tell everyone. Don’t live with regrets.”
“How can someone do that? We all lost people. Every night when I close my eyes I just see their bodies…” She looked down. “I know he thinks I am angry with them but I’m just scared.” She looked at Vince.
“Talk to him…really talk to him.” He placed his hand on her shoulder in comfort. She nodded her head and gave a small smile.
When the boys returned they weren’t alone, they found Teresa. Y/N’s eyes lit up when she saw her friend. She loved Teresa, she missed her. She went to embrace the girl but Gally quickly grabbed her arm to stop her.
“She’s our prisoner, not our friend.” He told her. Teresa looked at Y/N with apologetic eyes. Y/N knew she was never bad, she was never truly against them.
“She’s my friend.” Y/N told Gally. “Treating her like this will not help any of us.” Y/N attempted to approach Teresa once more.
“That was an order Y/N.” Gally growled at her, his voice deep and annoyed. Y/N looked back at Thomas and Newt, who both nodded their heads agreeing with Gally.
“It’s okay Y/N.” Teresa assured her, Y/N moved away from Gally, watching in silence as Gally attempted many times to get Teresa to answer any of his questions. Thomas tried a couple times and finally Teresa was ready to talk. She told them about the cure, the cure for the Flare, she told them where Minho was being held and what they were doing to him, and about the kids they had imprisoned.
“She is our way into that building.” Gally told Thomas. “Once we are in we are set.”
“It won’t be that easy, everything is guarded-“ Teresa went to speak.
“We can handle that part.” Gally interrupted. “Vince will drive the bus, get those kids out, get Minho, and leave this shit hole.”
“What about her?” Newt asked, referring to Teresa who was sitting with Y/N. “Do we trust her?”
“We can trust her.” Thomas spoke. Newt looked at Thomas, something in him feeling like he was ready to explode, like sudden anger. He snatched Thomas by the collar of his shirt and slammed him against the wall. Y/N and Teresa both stood up along with Frypan, Brenda, Jorge, and even Vince.
“What makes you so sure she won’t turn on us again huh? I could lose my friend over a girl you fancy!?” Newt shouted. Gally quickly pulled Newt away and held him back.
“What’s with you Newt?” Thomas asked. “It has nothing to do with that. I want Minho back just as much as you do.”
“Then start acting like it.” Newt roughly pulled himself away from Gally and stormed outside.
“What just happened?” Brenda asked.
“Symptoms.” Teresa said to Y/N. Y/N looked at her. “He is showing symptoms.”
“Of?”
“Did you guys get attacked by Cranks?” Y/N went cold, she knew exactly what happened now. She rushed past Gally and Thomas, pushing them to get outside. She opened the door and saw Newt leaning against the railing, looking ahead of him.
“Show me.” She demanded, tears forming in her eyes. “Show me the bite.” By then Thomas and Gally joined her. Newt let out a sigh and turned to the girl. He lifted his jacket sleeve to reveal the mark. She quickly approached him, getting a closer look.
“Why were you hiding this?“ She asked him.
“I wanted to focus on getting Minho.”
“How long did you expect to hide it?” Thomas asked. Newt rolled his sleeve down and ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. “Teresa said there is a cure though…we can get it.” Thomas added.
“Minho is our priority right now.” Newt told them. “The cure may or may not work.”
“Minho and you are our priority.” Y/N told him. “No more losing anyone.” She took his hand in hers. He gently gave her a small squeeze.
“Alright love.”
Y/N was packing her bag, fumbling to place everything needed, her hands shaking. She hated this, she hated the constant danger they are in, the constant fighting, having to survive. She felt the tears form, she turned away from everyone and tried to calm herself down. She went to place a flashlight I’m her bag but it fell to the ground and started to roll, till a large foot stopped it.
“Here.” It was Gally, he picked up the light and handed it to her.
“Thank you.” She took it and placed it in her bag, wiping her tears away quickly.
“What’s going on?“ He asked, leaning against the table.
“I’m just packing my bag.” She replied softly.
“Why are you crying?” She looked up at him.
“I…I’m scared.” She admitted. “I don’t want to go into the city, I don’t want to see anyone die or already dead…I want…” She looked at her book bag. “I want to stay here.”
“Everyone is going, everyone needs-“
“To help, I know.” She zipped up her bag and placed it on her back. She wasn’t getting the comfort she needed from him, she didn’t expect to. She did think maybe he had changed since the maze, she thought he did.
“Just like the glade, everyone pulls their weight and if we do that we will be fine.” She nodded her head and went to leave him. He took her by the arm and stopped her. “There is no time for this Y/N.” He warned her. “We need to be focused.”
“I understand that Gally.” She replied. She pulled her arm back and went over to Brenda. Brenda instantly knew her friend was upset and wrapped her arm around her for comfort. Gally looked at Y/N, she has changed, she may not see it but she has.
“The city is in shambles.” Vince said as they drove the bus. Thomas, Gally, Newt, and Teresa were separated, they went straight to WCKD to find Minho and the children, while Jorge, Brenda, Frypan, and Vince stayed in the getaway bus that will take the children to safety. Y/N looked out the window, he was right, cars were flipped, people were running to find safety, fires left and right. She didn’t want to be separated from Newt or Thomas, they had always been there.
“We will park here till we hear word from Gally that he found the kids.” Vince ordered.
“Gally is alone?” Y/N asked.
“He’s getting the kids while your friends find your missing one.” Vince told her.
“No one is helping him…he needs the help.” She stood up. She relaxed into her backpack and pulled out a small gun. She had never used one before but she wasn’t going out there without it.
“Open the door…please.” She told Vince.
“Y/N you are not going out there.” Jorge told her. “That is a death wish.”
“No regrets.” Y/N said, looking directly at Vince. “Please.” Vince let out a sigh, he pulled the lever to open the bus door, she quickly got out, ignoring their calls to come back.
The city was being torn apart, she couldn’t unsee the damage that was before her, what was worse was innocent lives were taken. She easily found the building she needed to get into, guards were nowhere in sight which she quickly took her chance and entered. She moved her way through the empty halls, reading signs that could help her find her way. She was lost. She made turn after turn but couldn’t find anything or even anyone. Just as she was about to turn one more corner a large hand covered her mouth and one around her waist, pulling her into a small dark room.
“It’s me…it’s me.” Gally, he was wearing a guards suit, he took his mask off. “What the hell are you doing here?”
“You were alone…what if you needed help or…I didn’t want you to be alone.”
“I can handle…” He looked down at her, she was terrified, but she came here for him, to find him. “Okay…let’s uh…let’s keep looking. I have a plan.” He put his mask back on and roughly grabbed her arm. “Just follow my lead and trust me.” She nodded her head. He took her gun and placed it in his belt. He pushed out of the room where two guards were starting to walk by.
“Hey! I found her! Where does she go?” Gally yelled. The two guards stopped and looked at Y/N.
“With the others, just down there.” One said, pointing down the hall. Gally nodded his head and pushed her forward. Once the two guards were out of sight, he quickly found the room that held the captive kids. Y/N peeked in, there were at least twenty of them piled in, some looked as young as maybe four.
“They are so young.” Y/N said, Gally grabbed his bag and pulled out a small torch.
“Stand back.” She nodded her head and did as he said, he turned it on and began to burn a hole around the doors lock pad which quickly was burned off, unlocking the door. Gally threw it aside and opened the door.
“It’s safe, we are part of the Right Arm and we are getting young kids out of here.” Gally explained. “Vince, we got them.” Gally spoke into his walkie. The kids hesitantly began to emerge from the room, frightened.
“Where are we taking them?” Y/N asked him.
“The front door.”
“Is that safe?” She asked, Gally motioned for everyone to follow them, she walked beside him, closely towards the front door. The bus was already there, Brenda in the driver seat, both Jorge and Frypan were helping the kids pile into the bus.
“Where is Vince?” Y/N asked.
“He’s getting back up.” Gally told her.
“Back up…what is going to happen?” Gally looked down at her, he could tell she was starting to panic. Every answer he gave her was only making it worse. She looked around, the commotion only getting worse, the city was going to go down in flames.
“I need you to get on that bus.” He told her.
“You are getting on too right?” She grabbed onto the sleeve of his suit.
“I’m going to get the boys and make sure those shanks don’t get into too much trouble.” He joked, she looked down, not finding his human amusing. “Get on that bus and help these kids.”
“Okay.” She replied. She let go of him and got onto the bus, refusing to look at him. He let out a sigh and turned to Frypan.
“She’s alright.” Frypan assured him. “Get our friends yeah?” Gally nodded his head.
“Why do they need a helicopter? What is happening?” Y/N asked Brenda who had the walk-in talkie. The bus was safely out of the city. She hasn’t heard anything, were the boys safe, did they get Minho, was Newt okay?
“The connection isn’t reaching out here…all I heard was collapsing.” Brenda told her.
“Collapsing…what does that mean…Frypan we have to go back.” Y/N said to him, he was sitting down.
“We are going to stay here and wait Y/N. There is nothing we can do.” Y/N knew he was right, it was just a waiting game.
The building went down in flames, Newt was gone, and so was Teresa. The bus ride was long, it felt like a lifetime for Y/N. It wasn’t till the sun came up and they came to a stop that she realized where she was. She looked out the window, it kwas the ocean, a beach. Her eyes were tired, red, and puffy from crying.
“We are here.” Frypan whispered to her. He took her hand and the two got off the bus, tents were set up everywhere, large white tents. She looked around, the sea breeze blowing through her hair. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
“It’s beautiful.” Brenda spoke, Jorge wrapped his arm around the girl and smiled.
“It’s home now.” He told them. Frypan never let go of Y/N’s hand, he led the way into the tents. Y/N looked around, small beds scattered everywhere, injured and sleeping bodies filling them up.
“Y/N?” His voice. She turned around. She let out a soft sob, she let go of Frypan’s hand and engulfed Gally. Her arms wrapped around his waist. He wrapped his arms around her and held her tightly. She nuzzled her face into his chest, his shirt catching her tears.
“Minho and Thomas are here.” He told her. She pulled away and looked up at him. “Newt…” She nodded her head understanding.
“How is Thomas?” She asked.
“He’s okay. Do you want to see him?” She nodded her head. He led her out the tent, he took her to Thomas and Minho who were sitting outside. The two boys stood up and both approached Gally and Y/N. She was quick to hug Minho, he held her tight.
“I am so glad you are okay.” She told him. He let her go and smiled.
“I am too.” He laughed. She looked at Thomas. He looked exhausted, he looked broken.
“I’m sorry.” Was all he said to her. She shook her head and hugged him.
“You saved everyone that you could…don’t apologize.” She told him. He nodded his head. “She loved you…she loves you.”
“I love her.” Y/N smiled up at Thomas.
“I know you do.” Y/N looked at Gally. “I’m going to go see the water…if that’s okay?” She asked, she has never seen the ocean and badly wanted to just put her feet in and sit in the sand.
“Of course.” Thomas told her and smiled.
Y/N made her way to the beach, she took off her shoes and socks and carefully walked onto the warm sand. She smiled and for once genuinely felt the peace they have been fighting so hard for. She ran down and let the cold water hit her, she laughed. She hadn't laughed in a long time. She bent down and touched the salty water. Nothing could beat this view, not even the sunsets at the glade that she used to love to watch. She made her way back up to the sand and sat down, watching the waves.
“You can’t beat this view.” Gally sat beside her, she looked at him and smiled.
“I can’t wait to see the sunset…it’s hard to believe this is home now.”
“I don’t think I’ll ever believe it.” The two sat in silence. “Listen, there is something I want to ask you.” She turned and looked at him. “When you found me last night…was it really to find me or-“
“To find you.” She quickly interrupted him. “I-I wanted to find you…I don’t want what happened in the maze ever happen again.” He reached for her face, pushed back a loose strand of hair from her eyes. She leaned into his touch.
“It won’t…we stay together no matter what happens.” She nodded her head. He moved closer to her, pulled her into him. She closed her eyes, waiting for him. She felt his lips gently press onto hers. This moment, she didn’t realize how long she was waiting for this to happen.
“I love you.” She whispered, pulling away from him.
“I love you.”

The bad boy and the good girl. The typical cliche and Y/N was no exception. Cupid’s arrow hit her directly in the heart the moment Butch entered her life. She tried desperately to remove him from her every thought, her daily life, anything. He was always there.
It was a normal Sunday morning, Y/N was leading the church choir, her Uncle leading the sermon, and her Aunt in the front row watching. It’s routine. She lives her life in routine. Monday through Friday she attends her classes in collage, Saturday and Sunday she is attending church. She loved her life, her family, and her friends. She had everything and never sought for more. That was until Butch entered the picture, sitting in the back row with who she assumed was his Mother. The moment she laid her eyes on him, she was tempted by sins. She has thoughts she never imagined having.
“As we end this sermon this morning I want everyone to welcome Ms. Hayes and her son Butch to the community.” Everyone turned their attention to Ms. Hayes and her son. The judgement was loud although the voices were silent. Ms. Hayes was a single mother who was clearly down on her luck raising her older son. Y/N loves where she lives but the amount of cruel criticism and unwelcoming her neighbors being are something she wishes she will never become.
After the Sermon came to end, Y/N wanted to introduce herself properly to Ms. Hayes and her son. She gently pushed through the crowed of people conversing and found Ms. Hayes getting ready to leave.
“Ms. Hayes…excuse me.” Y/N called out. Ms. Hayes stopped and so did her son. “I wanted to introduce myself .” Y/N approached smiling.
“You are the Preacher’s niece, yes?” She asked.
“Y/N…I know everyone seems a little stand of ish and I wanted to make sure you feel completely welcomed here.” She smiled, looking at Butch. He rolled his eyes and turned away.
“That’s very kind…we still haven’t settled in yet.”
“I am more than happy to help.” Y/N offered. Ms. Hayes looked at her son and then back at Y/N.
“Butch hasn’t seen the town officially yet, he starts school classes tomorrow and will be a grade above you…would you mind showing him around?”
“I don’t need help with anything mom.” Butch spoke.
“Please just go…it will put my mind at ease knowing that you know where to go.” Ms. Hayes gave her son a pleading look. Y/N could tell he would do anything for his mother.
“I would be happy to show you around. This town has a lot of offer.” Before Butch could protest, his mother pushed him out the door and Y/N giggled, quickly catching up to him.
The two walked in silence, more like Butch did, while Y/N did all the talking. She went on about the town itself, the latest gossip, the students in school. She showed him around the whole town, the hangouts, the one good diner, and then the school.
“It really is a nice place to live. It’s quiet, not many outsiders, everyone knows everyone.” She told him. “Where do you and your mother move from?” She asked.
“It doesn’t matter because we won’t be here long either.” She replied.
“If you don’t mind me asking and feel free not to answer but…why did you move here?” He stopped walking which made Y/N stop.
“You really want to know why?” He asked her. She nodded her head looking up at him. He lifted his sweatshirt just bit which revealed a large scar.
“W…what happened?” She asked him.
“I got into a fight with this asshole my mom was dating. He pulled a knife out and got me.” He pulled his sweatshirt back down.
“I’m sorry…I…”
“We came here so she can get away from him.” She looked down. She was very empathetic and always felt strongly towards other people’s emotions.
“Your mother seems really amazing.”
“She makes stupid decisions. Coming here being one of them.”
“It doesn’t have to be…we have always been a quiet town, great people-“
“Who are you trying to convince? All I see is brainwashed idiots.” She was taken back by his insult towards her.
“How would we be brainwashed? Because we are a small community who look towards God for answers? We have something to believe in.”
“It’s fucking bullshit.” She didn’t want to entertain the conversation any longer.
“I’m sorry you feel that way. I’m sure you can find your own way home.” She left him, she felt bad for doing so but his attitude towards her wasn’t something she wanted to deal with any longer.
It had been two weeks. Two weeks of classes where Butch never attended, of church where he never came and of Ms.Hayes and her son living in their new home. Every Sunday for the last two week she would see Ms. Hayes and chat with her, Butch was never there, he never came. She wasn’t sure why, but he was all she thought about. His eyes, his face, his scent. He was intruding her thoughts in ways she never thought of. Impure thoughts that she tried to forget. It wasn’t till now that he returned. He sat in the back row, away from his mom even. Y/N sang lead in the choir, her eyes landing on Butch. He looked tired, he looked on edge.
“I want everyone to take something I say to heart, I want you to ponder on it, I want you to remember it.” Her Uncle spoke. “We live with our choices, those choices end on consequences. You can either make them good or bad.”
The sermon had ended and Y/N had this feeling she had to speak with Butch. She noticed he left without anyone even noticing. She gently rushed past the crowed and outside. She looked around and saw he was heading towards the direction of his house. She quickly ran to catch up to him, when she did she reached for his arm and stopped him.
“B…Butch.” She spoke. He stopped but didn’t turn to face her. “You have been at school.” She looked down, letting go of him. He turned around and finally she was able to see him. His left eye is as bruised and red and he had a cut on his upper lip.
“What happened?” She asked concerned.
“My mom…that asshole found us and she let him stay.” He told her. Y/N shook her head in disbelief.
“I am…I am so sorry I-“
“I gotta go.” He went to turn away but she stopped him.
“You can’t go back to him can you?” She asked.
“Where the hell am I suppose to go?” He snapped. She thought for a moment, then it dawned on her. She took his hand without saying anything and led him to her favorite place. Her town was small that was true, but it had a hidden gem. Just passed the high school, a wooded area which harbors a small lake.
“I come here a lot. In the summer it’s usually packed with kids but for now it’s just alone and empty.” She sat down on the grass surrounding the lake. He hesitantly took a seat beside her.
“Why are you like this?” He asked her. She looked at him confused. “There is no way you are this fucking nice to people who treat you like shit.”
“There is always a reason for someone behavior. I admit I do become a doormat to a lot of people but…I will never treat anyone the way they treat me.”
“You won’t survive a day out in the real world.” He said. She looked down and smiled.
“I know. The real world is cruel, it holds the nastiest kind of people…but it is always beautiful and care for the kindest people.” She looked out at the water. “You don’t deserve what the man is doing to you Butch.” She added.
“Maybe I do. I am a nasty person in the world, just like him.”
“No you aren’t. You are a victim to one.” He stood up in anger. He couldn’t understand why she was always defending him, someone she knew nothing about.
“You don’t fucking get it!” He shouted. She stood up and dusted off her dress. “You live in this fucking diluted fantasy world.”
“What don’t I get? I am trying to understand you Butch but you make this impossible.”
“I don’t want you to understand me that’s why I am saying. You are fucking weird and think you this fucking saint but really you are just as fucked up as me.” He stepped closer to her and leaned down to her level.
“You are just taking your problems out on me because I am trying-“ He roughly shoved her, she landed on the ground hard. She was scared, she felt warm tears tickle her eyes. She refused to move. He ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. His anger got the best of him, something he never likes to happen. He went to approach her, to help her, she quickly scooted away.
“I’m sorry…I never-“
“You should just go.” She whispered wiping her tears away.
“Listen just-“
“I’m not going to say anything to anyone about this.” She assured him. That isn’t what he was going to say, he knew he made a mistake and couldn’t take it back. He thought about what her Uncle said, he made a choice and it had a consequence.
“Let me help you.” He reached down for her again but she flinched.
“Please just go.”
She kept by what she told him. She never said anything. She never brought up to anyone about what happened to him at his home either and it killed her inside.
“Honey please eat something.” Her Aunt said as they sat down for dinner. She looked up and nodded her head. She started to take small bites of her food till the phone rang. Her uncle got up and answered.
“Speaking…how badly?” Y/N looked up and over to her Uncle. “Is the boy alright? Yes I will go over. Of course.” Her Uncle hung up the phone and looked over at his wife and Y/N. Y/N knew what it was about, she knew who he was going to see. She was going with him.
Flashing red and blue lights lit up the Hayes house. Her Uncle parked his car and quickly Y/N got out to find Butch and Ms.Hayes.
“Oh Father, I don’t know how I let this happen again-“Ms. Hayes saw her Uncle and ran to him. She was crying, her hair was a mess, she had a cigarette in her hand and has she passed Y/N, the smell of alcohol radiated off of her.
“Where is your son?”
“Inside…the ambulance are looking at him now.” Y/N rushed inside and just like Ms. Hayes said, Butch was sitting on the stairwell of their house, a EMT tending to a gash in his head. Butch looked up and saw Y/N, soft tears formed in her eyes.
“This should stay wrapped for the night.” The EMT told him before packing their medical bag and walking outside.
“W…what happened?” Y/N asked, half scared to even ask.
“Another fight.” He answered. “I’ll be fine.” He stood up and used the stairwell banister to balance himself.
“My Uncle was called…I came with him when-“
“You didn’t have to. I said I was fine-“
“You aren’t fine Butch! Your mother is drunk, that man is in the back of the police car…they could arrest her too.”
“Good.” Was all he replied. She could stand him, she couldn’t wrap her head around what he was thinking.
“Where would you go?”
“Away from here and away from them.”
“When?”
“Why are you asking me all these fucking questions?” He snapped.
“I-I’m sorry-“
“Butch come outside with us we want to ask you a few questions.” A police officer entered. Butch walked past Y/N but she was quick to follow behind him. His mother was crying to her Uncle but the moment she saw her son she grew angry. Y/N wasn’t expecting that.
“He attacked him first! That boy has anger issues!” Ms.Hayes shouted. Y/N looked up at Butch who was unfazed by her accusations. Nothing seemed to get to him.
“Your Mom is very intoxicated and I can’t believe a word she says until she is completely sober.”
“She’s telling you the truth.” Butch told him.
“Butch-“ Y/N went to say.
“They are both drunk and started fighting, he got close to hitting my mom but I got to him first.” Butch added. Y/N sighed quietly in relief.
“They will both be taken down to the station to sober up and we will go from there in the morning.”
“I have a spare room he can take for the night.” Y/N’s Uncle said approaching.
Returning home Y/N watched as Butch sat outside, her Aunt was setting up the front room, while her Uncle was starting some tea. She snuck out and joined Butch. He was sitting on a bench they had, his head which still had the bandage on it, leaned back looking up at the sky.
“May I join you?” She asked him. He didn’t answer her, she carefully sat down and looked up at the sky as well. “My Uncle always said that the stars are the eyes of your lost one’s looking down at you.” She spoke. “When I lost my parents I-“
“I don’t need your sap story.” He cut her off coldly. She looked down from the sky at her lap.
“I’m sorry…” She whispered.
“I’m leaving.” He told her. She looked at him. “Going to go to my buddies upstate.” Her heart dropped.
“W…when?”
“Tonight.” He replied. He looked at her. “No way I’m staying around here.”
“You can’t.” She told him. “Your mom-“
“I don’t give two fucks about my mom. She doesn’t give a fuck about me either.” He stood up, getting easily frustrated, something Y/N often did to him and he couldn’t understand why.
“She just needs guidance…and so do you.” Y/N stood up with him. “If you just let-“
“Don’t you fucking dare say God…not all of us rely on a religion to get us through the day.”
“It’s not like that Butch. I have had my struggles to and having something to believe in makes me feel like I can keep going.”
“You have bullshit that’s what you have.” She wasn’t sure why she did it, maybe the constant cursing at her, the judgement of believing in God, the negativity…but the moment she raised her hand and slapped him across the cheek, she instantly felt guilt. He turned his head, not saying a word.
“I have always…always wanted to believe that the world isn’t what you said. I convinced myself that…you make it impossible-“ She began to sob.
“Impossible to what Y/N?!” He shouted. She jumped a bit at his outburst.
“It doesn’t matter.” She told him. She went to leave him but he roughly grabbed her wrist, pulling her into him.
“Impossible to what?” He repeated, whispering into her ear. She closed her eyes and tried to pull away from him but he refused to let go of her. “Did someone start catching feelings?” He teased.
“Stop.” She told him. He wrapped his arms around her waist, his face in the crook of her neck.
“Do you think about me? Think about what I could do to you? How I can make you feel?” His warm breath tickled her neck. She gripped his shirt, trying to push away from him.
“Please, it’s not fair what you are doing.” She felt tears form again.
“I think about it to, about how innocent you are, all the ways I can change I that.” He peppered her neck with soft kisses, slowly leading to her lips. “Is that what you want?”
“No, I want you to let me go because this is mean and-how I feel isn’t something to make fun of.” He pulled back and looked at her.
“So you really do feel that way?” He asked in a serious tone. She looked down, embarrassed. He took her chin in his hand and forced her to look at him. “Do you?”
“I have feelings for you…I…I have been thinking about you in ways that I shouldn’t-“ before she could finish answering his question, his lips were pressed against hers. She was taken back, she didn’t know what to do, she had never been kissed before. He pulled her closer to him, deepening the kiss. It wasn’t a rough kiss, it wasn’t a forcefully kiss, it was needy kiss. Like he needed this, to feel her.
“Don’t leave.” She said pulling away from him, as much as her body and heart were telling her not too, her head said otherwise. She looked up at him. Looking at his bruise on his eye, the cut on his lip. As much as he is mean to her, she knows he has been though a lot, deals with a lot. He leaned in and kissed her again, gently.
“Okay.” He sighed and leaned his forehead against hers. She closed her eyes, taking in the soft moment. She knew this wouldn’t last.
“We should go inside.” She told him.
The night was long. Tossing and turning. She couldn’t sleep, thinking about him, his lips against hers, his hands holding her. It was wrong and it feels wrong now but it also felt right. She had to see him again. She quietly got up from her bed and carefully open her door.
She quickly made her way out to the hallway and down to the first floor and towards the guest room where he was sleeping. She gently knocked on the door and waited impatiently for him to answer, hoping he was awake. She heard the light turn on and the door opened.
“I can’t sleep.” She told him. He moved aside and let her in. “Did I wake you?” She asked.
“Not really…” He looked at her, she didn’t realize till now that she was just wearing a t-shirt and her underwear, she sat down on the bed and placed a pillow on her lap. “Did you want to sleep here?” He asked her. She knew she should say no, everything in her body was screaming no, but she nodded her head yes. She climbed under the covers and he turned the light back off and joined her.
She laid on her side, away from him. He climbed in beside her. She tensed up, nervous. He turned to face her, carefully wrapping his arm around her. He moved himself closer, his body head radiating. She closed her eyes and relaxed into his touch.
“Why are you really here?” He asked her.
“I…I was afraid you would leave.” She admitted.
“I’m no good for you.”
“Don’t do that.” She leaned up. “Don’t kiss me like that and lead me on and then say something like that.”
“What do you want me to say? Do you actually think we would be something?” She couldn’t believe him. She couldn’t believe what he was saying to her, as if the moment they shared earlier meant nothing.
“I guess I wasn’t thinking.” She climbed out of the bed and angrily left the room, returning to her own. She felt stupid, she felt vulnerable, she felt like was a teenage girl getting dumped. She is an adult, she is about to graduate college soon, start her life.
The next morning she was up early. Not early enough. In the kitchen she was greeted by her Aunt and Uncle, as well as Butch.
“Good morning sweetie.” Her Aunt said.
“I am going for a walk.” Y/N said, she went straight to the front door and left without saying another word. She made it down the drive way when she heard the front door open again.
“Wait up.” She heard. She ignored him and kept walking. “Will you stop.” He grabbed her hand and stopped her from walking.
“I am tired of you grabbing me like that.” She said pulling her hand away from.
“We are going up to the station.” He told her. She looked at him. “I want you there.”
“I don’t need to be there Butch.”
“I know but I want you there.” He repeated.
“You made it clear last night where we stand. I am not going to continue this with you anymore.”
“I didn’t mean it like that alright. You got a good life, nothing like mine. Once my mom is out we will be leaving again.”
“Okay Butch.” She turned away again but once again he stopped her. “Don’t.” She warned him.
“Fucking listen to me!” He shouted loudly.
“I am not like your mother…I will not let you treat me the way the men in her life treat her.” She knew saying that was low, but she refused to apologize for it.
“Fuck you.” He spat. “What the fuck do you know?”
“I know that you are turning into that man last night who hurt you.” She gently placed her hand on his cheek. “You don’t have to.”
“Come with me, please.” She looked into his eyes, why couldn’t she say no to him. He took her hand that was on his cheek and held it. “Please.” She nodded her head.
At the station Butch never let go of Y/N’s hand and her Uncle took notice. They went to a small room where his Mother and the man she was dating were already sitting down waiting.
“Y/N wait outside.” Her uncle ordered. She went to release Butch’a hand but he held tighter.
“I want her here.” He told him. Her Uncle wanted to protest but he had no true say. Y/N sat beside Butch in the chair across from his mother. Her Uncle did the same.
“What is this?” His mother asked, referring to Y/N and Butch holding hands. “Trying to knock up the priests niece?” Y/N looked down. She couldn’t believe the change she was seeing in Ms. Hayes.
“What do you want mom?” He asked ignoring her.
“They are releasing us today and because you are eighteen I’m kicking you out.” She told him.
“Kicking him out for defending himself?” Y/N asked.
“Y/N.” Her Uncle spoke. “What ground do you have for kicking him out?” Her Uncle asked.
“Assault.” The man she was dating said. “That boy could have killed me.”
“I planned on leaving anyways so you wont have the satisfaction of saying you got rid of me mom.” Butch told her. Y/N’s heart dropped, the thought of him leaving pained her.
“You know your Daddy don’t want you.” Butch just shrugged. “And you won’t stay here and fool around with that girl either or is that what you want? To fuck up her life too.”
“Enough.” Her Uncle said. “I trust my niece enough to make right decisions, she is an adult and I won’t allow you to speak about her like that.” Y/N looked at her Uncle with thankful eyes. “As for Butch. He is welcome to stay with us until we figure out a plan for him.”
“Are we done?” Butch asked.
“Don’t have anything else to say boy?” The man asked.
“Let’s go.” Butch said getting up, Y/N quickly followed him out of the room. He continued walking out of the station.
“Are you going to leave?” She asked catching up with him. “You can stay-“
“I’m leaving.” He told her. She walked in front of him and stopped him from walking anymore. “Don’t do this.”
“No you don’t do this…you are not leaving.”
“My mom is right. I’ll fuck up your life right along with mine…you are just something that passed my time.”
“So I was going to be hook up and that’s it? That’s what this was?” He shrugged. “You are disgusting.”
“Yet you wanted it to…but little miss church girl was afraid to sin…but if you want to before I leave I’ll be happy to-“
“Fuck you.” She spat, catching herself and maybe even him off guard. Her anger got the best of her. “Fuck you!” She pushed him hard on the chest, over and over again. Shouting the same thing.
“Y/N!” She heard her Uncle shout. Through her tears she saw him running over with Butch’s mother not far behind. She shook her head and turned away, leaving them.
Y/N went home. She went to her room and slammed her door. Her Aunt quickly followed behind, worried about her nieces’s sudden change.
“Honey what happened?” She entered the room, Y/N sitting on her bed with her head in her hands.
“I’m so stupid.” Y/N cried. Her Aunt quickly kneeled in front of her, lifting her head to look at her.
“You have to tell me what happened.” Her Aunt pushed.
“I fell for him like an idiot.” Her Aunt’s face softened. “He is so cruel and mean.”
“Oh honey, falling in love is one of the hardest things a person can do.”
“Why did God let me?”
“God does unexpected things but he has his reasons. People enter our lives for a reason and they leave for a reason to.”
“I don’t want him to leave.” Y/N cried. Her Aunt engulfed her niece in her arms, comforting the sobbing girl.
Later that night Y/N knew how to make herself feel better. She went to the church. She quietly sat in the front row, remaining silent. She closed her eyes and began to speak to God. There was so much she wanted to know, the answers to all her questions. Why didn’t she have her parents? Why was her life chosen to be like this? Why couldn’t it be different?
“Anyone answering you?” She jumped at the sudden voice, she turned and saw Butch, the last person she thought she would.
“I thought you left.” She spoke. She turned back around. He sat beside her and sighed.
“I did, got about three hours out.”
“Why did you come back?” She asked him.
“I almost didn’t, before I did though my mom said something to me. She said this is the same thing my Dad did, left. I don’t get a fuck about my mom or anyone…anyone but you.” She turned and looked at him. “You are a pain in the ass, you don’t know when to shut up, but today at the station having you beside me made me feel…made me feel like I wasn’t alone.”
“You aren’t alone.”
“I know, I know. I’m sorry. I’m sorry for the way I treated you, for pushing you away.” She never heard him actually apologize before.
“I’m sorry too.” He took her hand and stood her up.
“Don’t say sorry. You didn’t do anything.” He pulled her in to him, wrapped his around around her. She laid her head on his chest, closing her eyes. He kissed the top of her head, holding her tighter.

“This town isn’t going to know what hit them.” Jerry said to Y/N.
“What exactly are we being hit with?” She asked.
“Formula One is being hosted here, a great sport.” Jerry was currently driving himself and Y/N to their town's City Hall to drop off banners and signs that she and he were working on for this sport.
“I still have no idea what you are talking about.” She told him.
“Racing Y/N, all those banners you have been slaving over for the past month are for the teams that are racing.” He said. He pulled into the parking lot of the building and put the truck in park. “I know you don’t get out much from that art studio but there is a huge track right down by Geller’s Mill and they get here tomorrow.”
“Yes I have noticed that Jerry thank you. I just didn’t think it was for something that is so called important.”
“It’s a televised sport Y/N…ESPN…your artwork is going to be seen around the world.” He explained. “Not only that but my hotel is hosting them…our businesses are going to blow up from this.” Y/N would be lying if she said that wasn’t cool. She has been working hard to advertise her shop and work but when living in a small town, you don’t get much publicity besides the internet.
“Well then, I guess we better show them how great our little home is.” She said and smiled.
The next day their small town went from quiet and peaceful, to large crowds coming in from all around the states so see this race. Y/N stood nervously beside Jerry as the two waited in the entrance of his hotel for these pro racers.
“Do you think the tie is too much?“ Jerry asked.
“You look very handsome Jerry…relax because you aren’t helping my nerves.” She told him. The two heard the sounds of voices starting to enter the hotel, the voices were brought to life when a large group of men entered.
“Welcome gentlemen!” Jerry greeted. “Any bags please sit on the trolleys and they will be taken to your rooms.”
“Thank you, this place is nice, very bed and breakfast like.” One man said, his accent was a thick Australian accent. “I’m Daniel Ricciardo.” He introduced shaking Jerry’s hand.
“Oh I know, big fan…big fan of all of you...I am Jerry.”
“I…I don’t know you so it’s nice to put a name to the face.” Y/N spoke. Daniel looked down at her, from the moment she locked eyes with him, she felt her knees want to buckle.
“There are a lot of names to remember…may I ask yours?“
“Y/N…Y/N L/N.”
“I will definitely remember that name.” He said and winked at her. “Oi Lando! Watch where you just toss my bags mate!” He shouted at the younger man.
“Please get settled, your room keys are here, labeled by names, if you have any needs or questions just call them at the front desk and I or someone else will be here to help.” Jerry explained. The large group all nodded and said their thank yous before finding their key and heading to their rooms.
“He is just a major flirt…the moment he opened his mouth I could tell.” Y/N said to Jerry as they organized his front desk.
“Oh you had those little doe eyes the moment he walked in.”
“There is nothing little about me Jerry, which is why he was flirting. It is easy to make a girl of my size swoon over you, which is what he wanted.”
“Where the hell did you hear that?” He asked.
“It’s just a fact…common knowledge. You wouldn’t know because you are too obsessed with Katherine Wills.”
“I’m going to marry that girl one day.” He said confidently.
“I know and I will help you do that.”
“That is why you are my best friend.”
That night when Jerry no longer needed Y/N’s help at the Hotel, she went to her art studio to do work on some commissions that needed to be completed soon. As she began to paint she began to wonder about her and Jerry’s conversation early that day. She meant by what she said, fat girls are easy to flirt with and if any girls were like her, they would give in to any attention that was given. All through high school she was single, never was asked on dates, went to prom with Jerry who she had known since Preschool, and just never caught anyones eye. She learned to be content with it. Now as an adult it did start bothering her, she sees everyone around her dating, getting engaged, or starting a family. She wanted that. She wanted the happy ending you see in a romance movie or read in a novel.
“It is drink-o-clock!“ She heard her front door of the studio open and her best friend's voice echoing, she set down her paintbrush and sighed.
“I am swamped Jerry.” She told him.
“You look like you came out of the swamps.” He teased referring to her clothes which were covered in paint, her hair in a messy bun. “Katy is going to be at the bar tonight, please come with me.” He begged. Y/N was a sucker when it came to Katherine and Jerry, both have clear feelings for each other, but both oblivious to it.
“I love hanging out with Katy so yes I will come.” She agreed. “Let me just lock up and we can go.”
The bar was the hang out for the young adults, with the town being so small, there wasn’t much to do. Jerry entered first and immediately went to order the two beers, Y/N saw Katy alone sitting at a table. She quickly went over and sat beside her.
“Oh Y/N thank goodness you are here.” Katy said to Y/N. “I was supposed to meet Kenny here but he bailed like usual.”
“Well…Jerry is here too…which here he comes.” Katy instantly grew red. Katy has been seeing Kenny Lewis on and off since freshman year in high school. He was the town football star that never made it.
“Ladies, I saw you didn’t have a drink so I got you one too.” Jerry told Katy, handing them both a beer.
“Oh thank you Jerry. Oh Y/N Mama was just askin, about you.” Katy said. “She heard from that man in California who wants you to send samples of your work.” Y/N’s eyes widened. She looked at Jerry in excitement.
“I owe your Mama the world!“ Y/N shouted.
“I think this calls for some shots.” Jerry said. The bar door opened and the room went silent for a moment. It was a couple of the racers, Daniel leading the group. Jerry waved them over and instantly Y/N sat down and went quiet. “We are just about to order celebration shots, y’all in?” Jerry asked the men.
“What are we celebrating?“ One asked.
“My girl over there.” Jerry said pointing at Y/N. All eyes were on her and she wanted to crawl below the table to just avoid the staring.
“Oh, I’m George Russell by the way, this is Max Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo, and Lando Norris.” George’s accent made it clear he was from the UK. Jerry left to get the shots, leaving Y/N to have to do the talking, thankfully Katy was still there, and knew Y/N.
“I’m Katherine, I just told Y/N here that a man in California wants her to send some of her artwork to him.”
“You’re an artist?“ George asked.
“Trying to be. I own L-Little Wonders Studio.”Y/N answered.
“She also made those banners for your little race.” Katy added.
“You did those?” Daniel asked her, she looked at him and nodded her head. “They look amazing.”
“Thank you.” Y/N said.
“Shots for everyone!“ Jerry shouted, returning with a tray full of shots. “I know you two ladies aren’t a fan of whiskey so peach vodka it is.”
A couple hours later, a few more rounds of shots, and endless beers, Y/N was more than relaxed and more talkative. Daniel, Lando, Katy, and herself found themselves playing around a pool.
“I am terrible at this.” Y/N laughed trying to hit the white ball at the yellow stripe ball.
“It would help if you hit the right ball in.” Daniel laughed and moved her pool stick to aim and the fully colored red ball. “Should I be regretting my choice in picking you as a partner?“
“One hundred percent.” She laughed. “ But…I will try to win.” She lowered herself and aimed the stick, after a couple seconds she pushed the stick slightly and the white ball rolled straight past the red ball in which she was aiming for. She put her head down in defeat.
“I take it we win?” Katy asked.
“That’s a win for us!“ Lando shouted.
“Jerry, I won!“ Katy ran over to Jerry who was talking to Max and George. He wrapped his arm around her waist and smiled.
“Are they a thing?“ Daniel asked Y/N. In Y/N’s mind she instantly felt like Daniel wanted to make a move on Katy, which normally always happened.
“Um…I want to say yes. It’s that kind of situation where they both are madly in love with each other but neither one will make a move. Plus Katy still sees this guy from high school sometimes.” Y/N explained. Daniel nodded his head.
“What about you?” The question took her off guard, how was she supposed to say that she has always been single and never dated?
“There is nothing to really-work that keeps me too busy.” She lied, she picked up her beer and took a long gulp.
“With the Pool skills that you…I find that hard to believe.” He teased her. She shook her head and smiled.
“Not all of us are born athletes…are you excited for the race?” The two made their way to a table to sit down and chat.
“Always, it’s nice to have a couple days off before it though…that never happens.”
“I will be honest, I have never even heard of Formula One till I was told to make the banners.” She admitted. “I tried looking into it but nothing was making sense to me except for the fact that you drove around.”
“Oi yeah there is much more than that…but that’s okay it’s not your fault , I can teach you everything there is to know.”
“How kind of you -“
“Katy! The hell?“ Daniel and Y/N both looked towards the direction of the yelling.
“Oh boy.” Y/N got up and went over to Katy who was on the verge of tears. She took Katy away from the group and towards the bathroom to avoid Kenny but failed.
“You can’t be trusted to go out without guys just swarming your huh?!” Kenny shouted a few of his buddies with him. Katy turned around, her tears disappeared.
“It’s not like that…” When it came to Kenny, Katy always tried to justify him.
“Well I know they aren’t here to swarm Y/N.” Y/N looked down at the hurtful comment, his buddies laughing. “Is Jerry here trying to steal my girl?” Jerry stood up, ready to get rid of Kenny.
“We are just hanging out Kenny.” Jerry told him. “Clearly you are already drunk and should just go.”
“Let’s go Katy.” Kenny ordered. Katy was about to follow but Y/N gently took her hand stopping her.
“He’s drunk Katy, you are safer here.” Y/N told her.
“Take advice from the cow that’s real smart Katy, how about you tell her about what you say about her when she isn’t around?“ Y/N knew he was drunk and would say anything to get a rise out of them. “What about what Jerry boy here said?” Y/N looked at Jerry confused.
“Shut up Kenny.” Katy warned, which made Y/N think something really was said. Y/N let go of Katy and backed away.
“Did I miss something?” Y/N asked.
“God no, he’s being an ass like usual…Kenny go home.” Katy told him.
“Find better friends Y/N. These two seem to think you are holding them back.” Kenny told her, looking directly at Y/N. “What did you say exactly Jerry? You could have moved on but instead you're obligated to stay?“
“Jerry?” Y/N asked.
“He’s twisting the conversation up that we had, that's all.” Jerry confessed. “We just mentioned that with you being on your own and-“
“I never asked you for help, or to stay-for anything, from either of you.” She felt embarrassed. Everyone was witnessing this. “Um…I-I’m going to go.” She grabbed her belongings and rushed out of the bar, ignoring the calls from Jerry and Katy.
She went straight to her studio, her place of solitude. In the back she pulled out the pieces she was sending to the man in California. It made her think. Was this going to be her big break? Was she going to be able to leave this town and truly begin her career, or would it be another let down and she would have to start from square one again? She started to think about how she could have been holding Jerry back, even Katy. When her grandparents died a few years back she didn’t have anyone except them two, but she never asked them for anything, just their support in anything she did, like she did with them. She has always been able to pay her bills, work, and survive.
She heard the front door of the studio open and she quickly went out prepared to see Jerry and Katy. It wasn’t them, which hurt, instead it was Daniel. She was expecting to see him.
“Hope you don’t mind me stopping by.” He said.
“N…no of course not.” She replied. “Hi.”
“Hi-uh…felt bad with how things went down back there and no one was coming so I figured I would…see if you are alright.” She looked down and nodded her head.
“I’m okay, I’m sorry you guys had to be there for that. Definitely not something we would want you to remember our town for.”
“Don’t apologize. Everyone has something going on. We aren’t perfect either.” He began to walk around and look at the pieces hanging on the wall that she had made. She began to get nervous, she knew being an artist she should be used to everyone seeing her work, but she was also afraid of criticism.
“You shouldn’t have left because of me.” She told him.
“Nah, it got pretty awkward and I don’t really like tension like that…you got some really nice work.”
“Thank you.” She smiled.
“What are you sending to California?“ He asked.
“They are back here.” She led him to the back of her shop and presented her work, four canvas paintings she had been working on for a year, only the fourth one wasn’t complete. Each one represented a key person in her life. “The first one is my parents which are two foggy silhouettes because I never really knew them, the second is my grandparents represented as gold because they raised me, shaped me into who I am, and the third is Katy and Jerry who are blue because I find the color blue peaceful and I always find my peace when I’m with them.” She explained.
“The fourth?” He asked.
“Not done…I have been struggling with that one.” She admitted.
“Really amazing Y/N.” He told her. “Your look on people…I admire that.” She looked up at him, taking in his words, once again feeling like a high schooler with her first crush.
“I don’t want to take people in my life for granted. Time can be short and I know the way I left the bar made it seem like I was angry with Katy and Jerry…really I would never want to make them feel like I am preventing them from doing anything, just want what is best.”
“What about what’s best for you?”
“I always say leaving here would be best but really I think it’s just finding what makes me happy…which is art, no matter where I am.”
“Do you want to see the track?” He asked her.
“What?”
“Let’s go see the track.”
“Are we allowed to?”
“I don’t see why not.” He replied, Y/N did not like that answer.
He refused the answer No for answer, which ended Y/N up at the track. She was amazed by how big it really was. She had no idea how much work was actually put into building it. He led around what they called the paddock. She looked around amazed by the view, and when she saw his car, it was even more amazing.
“This car…it looks very complicated.” She looked inside.
“If you don’t know what you are doing, then yes it can be.”
“How long have you been racing?” She asked.
“Over ten years with Formula One…you really haven’t heard of us before?” He asked.
“I don’t watch sports, plus when I did hear about it, I thought what could be so cool about cars going around in a circle…like what’s that other one called?”
“NASCAR…wow you really just said that.” She quickly began to apologize, meaning to insult his career.
“I am so sorry, I really didn’t mean it like that-“
“It’s alright, I’ll let it slide this time.” He teased her. “I want to show you something.” He took her hand without warning and led her out of the paddock and towards what she heard Jerry mention a couple times, the podium. She nervously followed him up to where three winners would stand.
“My favorite spot to be.” He told her. “In the center, fans cheering, all eyes on you.” He helped her up to stand on the center one. She looked down at him and smiled.
“I wouldn’t be able to handle all the eyes on me.” She told him.
“How about just mine then?” Her face grew red with embarrassment , she quickly got down and looked at her feet. “Do compliments make you nervous?”
“You make me nervous.” She admitted, forcing herself to look up at him.
“Why?” He took a step closer to her, closing the gap between them. Her thoughts were clouded by his presence being so close to her, it wasn’t till he wrapped his arms around her waist to pull her closer that she realized what was happening. She quickly snapped to reality and placed her hands on his chest to stop him.
“I’m sorry…this-we should go.” She told him. He let her go and cleared his throat awkwardly.
“Y-yeah alright, it’s getting late.” She nodded her head in agreement.
What was she thinking? What was he thinking? Was he really going to kiss her? Would she have let him? She laid in her bed, unable to actually fall asleep, she needed advice, she needed to tell someone what happened, she needed her best friends. She reached for her phone and sent them a text in their group chat. Immediately she got an answer. She climbed out of bed and changed into sweat pants and a sweater to meet Jerry and Katy at her studio.
“What’s wrong?” Katy was there already waiting at the front door.
“I will explain inside when-“
“I came as quickly as I could.” It was Jerry running up to the girls. Y/N unlocked the studio door and the three of them went inside. “What is going on?“ Jerry added.
“I am really sorry it is late and considering what happened at the bar I didn’t even think you would come.” Y/N said. She reached into her small little fridge and pulled out three beers.
“I didn’t think you would have reached out to us…I am glad you did.” Katy said and smiled.
“I am too…something happened earlier today.” Jerry and Katy both remained silent, waiting for the story. “Daniel was here, he came after I left…and he ended up taking me to the race track.”
“You-him-you actually went?“ Jerry asked.
“We talked a lot, and then…I think he was going to kiss me.”
“Y/N! So he didn’t kiss you?” Katy asked excitedly.
“I stopped him. I got nervous and I had never kissed anyone before and I started to think of all these reasons why I did the right thing in not letting me kiss him.” Katy shook her head. “He could be just looking for a small fling while here, using me for who knows what-“
“Stop right there. Even if he was just looking for a fling…you should have just let him.” Katy told her.
“Remember what I told you Jerry?“ Jerry looked down sadly. “I fell right into that trap.”
“What trap?” Katy looked confused.
“She seems to think that girls of the bigger size are easy to flirt with because they accept any sort of attention-“
“Which I have come to terms with, but I won’t allow myself to let that happen…which I almost did…I could see myself falling hard for him but I also could see myself getting hurt.” Katy took Y/N’s hands into her own.
“My Mama always told me to take chances. Never miss any opportunities that could be given to you, even when it comes to relationships. You have this handsome man taking interest in you, don’t let something that could be the biggest adventure in your life slip away because of your own insecurities.” Katy looked over at Jerry, who was looking away, avoiding her gaze. She looked back at Y/N. “People enter our lives for a reason, it could be good, bad, forever, or just for a moment…but we still had them at one point.”
“I don't want to get hurt.” Y/N whispered.
“If that happens we will be right here to mend you up…they have two days till their race festivities begin .How about we show him what kind of fun we like to have.” Katy suggested. Y/N smiled and nodded her head.
“Jerry, would you like to go on a double date?” Katy asked him. He looked at her like a deer in headlights.
“S…sure, of course.”
“Then it’s settled, Jerry, when you see Daniel tomorrow morning I need you to set the plans and us ladies will meet you.”
“Oh I have to plan it?” Jerry asked. Katy looked at Y/N in annoyance. “I can…I just wanted to be sure.” Jerry quickly stuttered.
Y/N looked at herself in the mirror. Katy dressed her in a yellow sundress and white small heels. Daniel agreed to go out with them, she had no idea what Jerry had planned, he was probably just as nervous seeing as he was finally going on a date with Kathrine. Katy was the one driving, she was just in the dark but she didn’t show any sort of sign that she was nervous, Y/N wished she was like her. The confidence Katy had was something Y/N would admire.
“That man really is something.” Katy said as they pulled into the parking lot of the bowling alley.
“I think it’s a great idea, and when was the last time we actually went bowling?“ Y/N asked.
“Senior year of high school…Kenny ditched me.”
“And who was there to replace him?” Y/N asked, smiling. Katy looked at her.
“Why do you think I asked him to plan this Y/N? This is a real date for him and I too…I inspired myself as well last night with my speech.” Y/N shook her head and laughed. “You look very pretty by the way.” Katy added.
“So do you.”
The two girls entered the bowling alley and many memories of their younger days were instantly brought back. Now being adults they didn’t have time to really go out and have a night of fun that did not consist of just the bar. They went to the counter and got their shoes.
“Over here!” They heard Jerry shout, both girls looked and saw Jerry and Daniel already at a lane with a couple pictures of beer. Y/N grew extremely nervous the moment she saw Daniel. He looked really handsome with a big smile on his face. The two girls approached and greeted them both.
“We got the beers and the teams sorted out.” Jerry announced. “Katy and I, Y/N and Daniel.” Y/N nodded her head and sat down to put on her shoes. Daniel said beside her.
“I have seen your pool skills…how are your bowling skills?” He asked her. She leaned up from putting in her shoes.
“I am a pro at bowling…my record is seventy six…going to try and break the record and get at least one hundred.” She joked.
“Alright hot shot, let’s see if you can win us a game then.” She nodded her head and smiled. She was the first to go up and grabbed the lightest ball. She lined herself up in the lane and positioned herself. She moved her arm back with the ball, aimed, and released, straight into the gutter.
“That’s okay, just a warm up.” Daniel said, clapping. He got up and picked Jed another ball. “Try this ball.”
“It’s too heavy.” She told him.
“That’s a good thing though, trust me.” She took the ball with two hands and turned back around. “Here, try standing like this.” He placed his hands on her hips which she wanted to move away from him but she didn’t, she remained still. “It’s all about where your arm is when you release that ball.” He stood close against her, guiding her arm back. She felt his breath against her neck as we leaned down to her height. He had his hand placed on top of hers as they both released the ball, without him moving an inch they watched as the ball hit the pins, creating a strike. She turned around excitedly to him.
“Thank you.” She said to him, moving away from how close they were. He took notice and also moved away.
“Alright, watch the real pros do this.” Katy said getting up and getting a ball. Y/N sat down and poured herself a beer into her empty cup. Daniel sat beside her and took a gulp of his own.
As the night went on, Y/N felt herself relaxing more. She and Daniel didn’t talk much, but they were winning, thanks to him, eventually they did win.
“Oh Jerry…we have to get your game up.” Katy said, leaning her head on his shoulder.
“I’m sorry but who scored a one-eighty. It surely wasn’t you.” Jerry laughed. She gently smacked his arm. Y/N watched as her two best friends were enjoying their first date together, though was it really their first date? She took a sip of her beer and looked down at the floor.
“Did you have fun?” Daniel asked her.
“I did.” She replied, she felt like she didn’t have the words to say. She was getting nervous again.
“Can we go talk for a bit?” He asked her. “Maybe outside?” She wanted to say no, she wanted to forget what happened the other night, she wanted to just move on.
“S…sure.”
The two excused themselves and she followed him outside to where it was quiet and they were alone.
“I want to apologize for last night. If I made you uncomfortable or anything…that was never my intention.”
“N-no it wasn’t that. It’s hard to explain and even if I did…it wouldn’t really…I just-“
“Jerry told me. He told me not to say anything but I felt like-“
“What did he tell you?” She asked, interrupting him.
“Just about your insecurities and worries about what my intentions are toward you.” She looked down, wishing this conversation wasn’t happening. “I can see why you did what you did last night not letting me kiss you, but I wish it wasn’t because you think I am using you or anything.”
“What are your intentions?” She bluntly asked. “I have never put myself out there and I feel like if I did it would be for no reason…it can’t be because you like me. You don’t even know me…it’s not like this can really be anything if that’s even what you want.”
“I do like you which is why I want to get to know you, that’s what dating is.” He defended.
“You have traveled the world, seen and met so many different people. What about me is so different?”
“Why are you holding me to standards? You think because I am a pro athlete that I want to pursue supermodels…I don’t see the world like that. I am not some superficial guy.” She wasn’t sure why, but she felt like crying, she felt like she made a fool of herself, he could tell she was getting worked up. His face softened and he ran his fingers through his hair.
“I’m sorry.” She told him.
“Don’t apologize for the way that you feel. I completely understand, I just want you to see that one hundred percent honest and genuine.”
“I don’t want to get hurt.”
“I would never hurt someone like you, not intentionally, but that doesn’t mean I will hurt because I will do everything in my power to make sure that doesn’t happen.” She looked at him, seeing if he meant every word. “Let me treat you for the next few days like the way you should be treated…starting with another game of kicking their asses.” She smiled and nodded her head. He took her hand in his and led the way back inside. Y/N quickly stopped him when the two approached Jerry and Katy who were just about to kiss.
“We leave the kids alone for a few minutes and this happens.” Daniel announced, Jerry quickly pulled away from Katy, his face beat red.
“This is why I said they needed a chaperone Daniel.” Y/N added. “These kids these days just can’t keep it in their pants.” Y/N sat down and refilled her cup.
“I’m thinking of no phones for a week…grounded…extra chores.”
“Are you two done yet?” Katy asked, rolling her eyes.
“I’m sure I can think of a couple more.” Daniel joked and the four of them laughed.
The night ended better than Y/N expected. She was tired and ready to go home.
“I’m going to drive Katy’s car home, she is drunk and I would feel better knowing she got home.” Jerry told Daniel and Y/N. He helped a slightly drunk Katy to her feet and wrapped his arm around her waist to keep her steady.
“I don’t mind driving you home.” Daniel said to Y/N.
“Text me when you get her home.” Y/N told Jerry.
The drive home was quiet, she stared out the window till she heard the radio come on.
“I love this song.” He began to tap the steering wheel, a huge smile on his face. She looked at him, she couldn’t help but smile as well. “Tell me you know the words.” The song was Happier by Bastille, it was one of her favorite songs.
“I love it too, a top favorite actually.” He began to sing along with the song, looking over at her. “I won’t sing though.” She told him. He looked at the road and then back at her.
“Come on…I need a partner.” He pushed. She shook her head and laughed. “I know you want to, it’s bubbling inside.” She looked out the window and then back at him, she gave in and began to sing along with him. The two sang together till they reached her house. He put the truck in park and the two then we’re once again in silence.
“I had fun tonight…thanks for teaching me how to bowl.” Y/N broke the silence.
“Thank you for letting me…for giving me a chance.” She looked down and fiddled with her fingers.
“I am sorry for assuming anything about you. I was just scared…guys don’t take interest in me and when they do it is just for a joke.” She told him.
“I can assure you that I am not treating you or this as a joke. I really do like you.” He assured her, she looked at him and nodded her head. He got out of the car and then opened her door to help her out. She took his hand and the two walked to the front door of her house.
“Tomorrow we start our practices on the track…after that would you like to go get dinner?” He asked her.
“Yeah I would like that.” She answered, he leaned down and kissed her gently on the cheek. “Goodnight.” She whispered.
“Goodnight.” He smiled.
The days leading up to his main race flew by, but they spent every moment they could together. She got to know Daniel more and more, and the more she did, the more she was falling for him. All these concerns started to arise in her head. He was the day after the race. It wasn’t till she was standing in the paddocks with Jerry and Katy that it was really going to be ending soon. Even with all the commotion of the race, she felt like all she could hear was silence.
“This is so exciting…I have been dying to catch a race in person and now here we are, in the heart of it all.” Jerry said.
“Not my cup of tea.” Katy disagreed. “Though it beats sitting in the stands.” Daniel was already out on the track. The race was about to begin.
“Show more enthusiasm girl, your man is out there.” Katy joked nudging Y/N. Was he her man? We’re they a thing? Are they going to be a thing?
After the race Daniel ended up in sixth place, or what she recently learned P6. She was happy for him, and his team seemed to be as well. He exited his car and went straight to the paddock where he was greeted with cheers and congratulations. He found Y/N watching a screen that had all the stats and records of the race.
“Understanding it?” He asked, sneaking behind her, she shook her head and laughed.
“No but it is amusing to watch.” She turned to him. “Congratulations.”
“Thank you, not my best but not my worst either. Listen, the guys and I are going to do one last hooray at the bar tonight and I want you there.”
“Of course.”
The bar was filled with Formula One drivers, all drinking and enjoying the night. Y/N had a hard time even squeezing through the crowd till she felt someone grab her hand and pull her to a table. It was Daniel’s partner Lando.
“Daniel is getting drinks for the table now…have a seat.” Lando offered her. She tucked a loose strain of her behind her ear and sat down nervously.
“Congratulations on the race today.” She said.
“Thanks love, did you like watching?”
“I really did, it was fun.”
“Good thing I bought plenty…hello darling.” Daniel said approaching with a tag of beers, she smiled, blushing at his nickname for her.
“Thank you.” She said taking one. “Jerry and Katy are on their way now.” She told him.
“Sweet, I have to speak to that man anyways.” Daniel said, referring to Jerry. “Let’s drink up because it’s going to be a long flight tomorrow.” Daniel said, raising his beer. Y/N gently raised her beer, a sting of sadness struck her body. She wondered if he was just as sad, or was it just her? She took a small sip and looked around at everyone enjoying their night without any cares or worries, something was going to try to do.
“It really is that simple.” Y/N laughed as she watched Lando who was pretty buzzed draw a butterfly on a napkin.
“Why the hell is one wing smaller than the other?” The two laughed uncontrollably, both feeling the effects of the alcohol they have been drinking.
“He’s just a little special in his own way.”
“How about we him name is Daniel.” Then the two shared another laugh.
“Name who Daniel?” Daniel approached the two who were basically in their own little world while everyone else were conversing and drinking.
“Daniel…meet Daniel.” Lando handed him the napkin. “I haven’t autographed yet but it’s by me.” Daniel nodded his head, admiring his friend's drawing.
“It’s lovely mate…Y/N want to get a beer with me?” Y/N nodded her head and got up from the table. “I’ll bring you one Lando.” Lando waved the two off and began to wander around to find his other friends.
“Enjoying the night?” Daniel asked as they waited to be she,led by the bartender.
“Yeah…you?”
“I am.”
“Did Jerry and Katy come yet?” Y/N asked.
“They are somewhere around here…hey can we get two beers please and two fireball shots.” Y/N looked up at Daniel like he was crazy.
“I don’t drink fireball.” She told him.
“For me you will.” He told her. She looked down, taken back by his demanding tone. The bartender handed him the two beers and two shots. “Ready?” He asked giving her the shot glass. She took a deep breath then nodded her head. The two cheers then quickly she down the shot. She quickly chased down the burning sensation with her beer, holding back any faces to mask the taste.
“Awful.” She said and smiled.
“Warms you right up though.” He joked, she nodded her head agreeing. “Let's party then.” He took her hand and led her back towards the crowd.
The night was coming to an end and both Y/N and Daniel sobered up. She didn’t want to end the night being wasted and end up hung over the next morning.
“Can I show you something before you go back to the hotel?” Y/N asked Daniel.
“Sure, let’s head out.” Y/N and Daniel went back to her Studio. She had been working on her last piece to send to California and wanted to show him before he left. She was nervous about what his reaction would be but at the same time excited that she finally finished. She unlocked her studio door and led him inside, straight towards the back. She didn’t say a word, she waited, letting him see the painting.
“Y/N…this is amazing.” She looked at her creation. It was Daniel. Shades of yellow surrounding him. “When did you even have time-“
“I worked all day yesterday and last night.”
“Why did you pick me?” He asked.
“You are the person who showed me that it’s okay to want to venture out of your comfort zone, to trust, and take a risk. You always have this aura of positive vibes and that’s why I picked the color yellow. You brought out a person that I want to be and helped me to see that.” She explained. “Even if our story is a small chapter…it will help me to continue to the end.”
“It doesn’t have to be a small chapter.”
“You leave tomorrow-“
“That doesn’t mean we end…besides I have something for you.” He reached into pocket and pulled out his wallet. Inside his wallet and pulled out a folded piece of paper. He handed it to her and she began to unfold it. When she opened it and began to read it, she instantly looked at him.
“You want me…when?”
“In two weeks we will be in Texas. You, Jerry, and Katy will meet me there, after that you will come with me to England.”
“Daniel I can’t-“
“You can, and you will. You said it yourself…as long as you are doing art it doesn’t matter where you are. What better way to inspire yourself than exploring a whole new country.”
“My shop…”
“…will be taken care of by Jerry and Katy…anymore excuses you want to think of so I can shoot them down?” She looked at him, trying to figure out if this was real or not.
“You want me to travel with you?” She asked sincerely.
“When I saw you watching me…being there in the paddocks…made me feel happy knowing I had someone there.” She looked down, he gently lifted her chin with his fingers, forcing her to look at him. “I told you I like you.”
“And you won’t regret it?” He chuckled, shaking his head no. “Promise?” Without saying anything else he carefully leaned down, hovering his lips over hers. She closed her eyes, not stopping him this time. He closed the gap between them, pulling her close against him by wrapping his arms around her. She rested her hands on his chest and she leaned into his kiss. Every romance novel, song, and movie were right, this first kiss was a special moment and it was one she would never forget.
“I promise.” He whispered to her.

Y/N gently stroked the cow’s snout, completely lost in her own thoughts that she didn’t even realize someone was trying to speak to her, that was until she felt a rough grip on her shoulder.
“Jesus, can you ever pay attention?” It was Gally. Working in the barn was her only escape from reality of living in the glade, but somehow Gally always managed to ruin that for her.
“I’m sorry…is everything alright?” She asked him. He rolled his eyes in annoyance.
“No, those damn chickens that you are responsible for got out again and are in our way of building the new camp.” Y/N just smiled and shook her head. She left the cow’s stall and made her way outside where she saw the chickens grazing on the ground. She quietly walked over and with no issues she was able to pick up the first chicken, then the second, and so on till they were returned back to their coop.
“They aren’t afraid of us so they are easy to round back up.” She told him closing the coop door.
“It doesn’t matter, it shouldn’t happen.” He barked at her. Ever since she arrived at the glade two months ago, Gally has had something against her, she wasn’t sure what she did and she is convinced it was nothing.
“Accidents happen Gally…it was taken care of.” It was as if she insulted him, she threw his hands in their air.
“Accidents can’t happen Y/N, accidents are what gets us killed out here!” His tone was harsh, he was shouting in her face. She tried to back away from him, but she was trapped by the chicken coop.
“I-I’m sorry…I-“
“Back off Gally.” It was Winston, she closed her eyes and sighed in relief when Gally moved away from her.
“Tell her to get it together or she goes out in the maze because she’s useless here she might as well be useless out there.” His words stung, she felt the tears form in her eyes. She looked down and felt the hot tears drip down her cheeks.
“Get the hell out of here Gally.” Winston told him.
“I’m serious Winston.” Gally warned.
“Excuse me.” Y/N said she pushed past the two boys, she ran to her bunk and laid down in her hammock.
Y/N sat beside Chuck and the new boy Thomas during dinner, avoiding any glares from Gally.
“I heard Stella will be giving birth soon.” Chuck said.
“Any day now.” Y/N spoke.
“I can’t wait, I’ve never seen a baby cow before-“
“That’s if she can keep it alive long enough.” She heard Gally mumble, abusing his building buddies to laugh. Y/N looked over at him, a smile of amusement on his face. She couldn’t take it anymore, she couldn’t keep letting him treat her this way and think it was okay. She stood up, she walked around, and he laughed, thinking she would just leave and let him win. Not this time. She took a full cup of water from the table discreetly and made her way towards him, from behind him she poured the cup over his head, the cold water falling onto him. He quickly shot up, she moved away and glared up at him.
“What the hell!” He shouted.
“I am done with you treating me like this.” She told him calmly.
“Then stop screwing up everything you do.”
“Last time I checked the chickens keep escaping from the coop that you and your goons built.” A few people in the room laughed, which Gally didn’t like.
“You want to act tough now?” He stepped closer to her and got in her face. “Don’t get scared now, it’s just getting good.”
“Enough, the two of you. Come with me now.” It was the voice of Gally.
Y/N walked behind Alby with her head down. She doesn’t like to cause issues, she also doesn’t like to bother Alby. He led them into the main cabin where they held meetings.
“Why are you two are constantly going at each other?“ Alby asked.
“Alby I am sorry for what I did-“
“Why are you apologizing to him? I am the one who has water all over them.” Gally said.
“I am not sorry for what I did to you…I am sorry for causing a scene. I am not apologizing for that.”
“You two need to learn to get along. We are building and sustaining a community, a community that needs to get along.” Alby said to them.
“Tell that to him.”
“I don’t need to get along with anyone to keep surviving. She is always doing something that messes with either my guys and I or someone else.”
“That’s not true.” She argued.
“Tell that to the crops we had to trash last week because your damn cow got loose.”
“Because of the loose hinge you put on her stall. Winston is the one who fixed it properly.”
“Now I can’t do my job right?” He was getting heated again and Alby stepped between the two.
“I’m just saying stop coming for me when you make mistakes too.”
“The only mistake I’ll make is not getting rid of you when I have the chance.”
“Enough Gally…go cool off.” Alby ordered him. Y/N remained silent, how was she supposed to react to that?
Days went by and Y/N kept to herself and work. She made sure nothing happened with the chickens, the livestock, and herself. She decided to work late today because she was avoiding Gally by any means and sometimes that meant late dinners. She sat with Stella who was laying down, she was close to giving birth and Y/N didn’t want to leave her side.
“Why aren’t they closing!?” She heard shouting, she got up and peeked out of the barn, she noticed the maze doors weren’t closed, normally at the time they were. Panic was flooding the Glade.
“I swear this is Greenie's fault.” She heard the voice of Gally, always finding someone to blame. “We need to get those doors closed.” Y/N was about to leave the barn till she heard the most terrifying screech.
Grievers.
She knew staying in the barn wasn’t a safe option for her or the livestock. She quietly walked into the chaos, avoiding being seen. She had to find a safe place to hide. Around her were cries for help, screaming from fear. She found herself at the meeting hall, she thought this could be a safe place till she heard snarling from behind her.
Her body froze. She slowly turned around. A Griever had his stinger up ready to impale her. It creeped closer and as it did, she would step back. It let out the worst growl that made her cover her ears, this was the end. She waited for the pain to start, for the stinger to stab her, but it never happened. She opened her eyes and saw Gally standing above the now dead creature, a large wooden steak in its head.
“Gally.” She spoke. He moved away from the Griever and towards her. Despite what the two have been going through, she didn’t care. She ran towards him and wrapped her arms around him. “Thank you.” She felt tears fall from her eyes. She wasn’t expecting him to return the hug, but he did. Within seconds she felt safe in his embrace.
“Let’s find the others.” He pulled away from her, clearing his throat, she nodded her head and followed him.
The night was long but eventually the sun rose and the Grievers retreated back into the maze. Y/N listened as a meeting was being commenced, many were dead, including their leader Alby. Gally was on a rampage, he was impossible to reason with. She listened as he wanted to send Thomas into the maze, convinced he was the reason for this happening. Newt couldn’t get a word in to try to calm anyone down.
“You know what…do what you guys want. That’s what will happen anyways.” Gally spoke.
“We can’t stay here anymore Gally. The doors won’t close anymore, it’s our chance to find a way out.” Thomas said.
“We know a way.” Minho added. “With numbers we can make it out there.”
“What numbers, we lost too many last night.” Gally argued.
“We shouldn’t fight about this.” Y/N spoke up.
“I agree, we need to vote.” Newt added.
“Go ahead and vote.” Gally left the meeting, Y/N quickly followed behind.
“What happened with the two of them last night?” Chuck asked.
“Gally…now isn’t the time to run off.” She grabbed his hand to stop him from walking any further.
“Go back Y/N. Last night didn’t make us friends.”
“I know…and that is fine but I mean it. We need to figure out what our next step is.” He snatched his hand away roughly.
“There is no “our” or “we”. Go back to them and just leave.”
“Not without you.” She choked, she never would admit it to herself but she always had feelings for Gally. Despite the way he treated her, but now, she could lose him and she couldn’t bare that.
“You don’t need me out there.”
“I do, I needed you last night and you were there. Any time something needed to be fixed in the barn you were right there or when the animals got loose. You are always there.”
“What are you going on about?“
“Are you that oblivious Gally?”
“No, I’m just sparing you from getting hurt.” He told her. “Go with them.” She shook her head no. If being with him meant staying in the Glade, then she would.
“You don’t want to stay here. You want to leave and I’m not going to be the reason you regret your decision.” He stepped closer to her.
“Then come with us. It’s not safe here anymore.” She argued. “We can see what is out there, beyond the Glade.”
“Y/N go with them.” He pushed. She gently took his hand in hers, searching for any reason why he would stay, was he scared? Too prideful? “When I said I would get rid of you…I didn’t mean it.” She smiled, knowing this was going to be a goodbye. She nodded her head, tears blurring her vision, he released her hand and wiped her tears. She leaned into his touch, not wanting to forget what it felt like.
“Just don’t…don’t disappear because when we find help I’ll make sure se come back-“
“I know, I know I couldn’t escape you that easily.” He joked, his laugh was stale and painful. “You should go.” She looked up at him, everything in her wanted to lean up and kiss him, but she knew that would make it harder to leave. He let her go and back away.
“I…I’ll be back okay.” He nodded his head, knowing that was going to a promise not kept.
Leaving the maze wasn’t easy, she never imagined she would be stepping foot into the death trap, but there she was, running for her life trying to keep up. It wasn’t till they reached an old building that they knew they were safe.
At least that is what they thought. Y/N held tightly onto Chuck’s, the building they entered was a lab, with the word WCKD all over it.
“What does WCKD mean?” Chuck asked.
“I don’t know but I have a feeling we will find out soon.” Thomas answered.
“No you won’t.” Everyone turned, Gally was standing there with a gun pointed at Thomas. Y/N gripped Chuck.
“Gally, how did you find us?” Newt asked. “And the gun?”
“Tell them the truth Thomas, I know who you really are and they have to know. Tell them how you work for WCKD.” Gally cocked the gun.
“He was stung.” Chuck whispered.
“I don’t know who WCKD is Gally.” Thomas reasoned. “I am just like you, I don’t have any memory before the Glade.”
“Gally put the gun down.” Y/N spoke.
“This is to protect all of you.” Within seconds disaster struck, Minho threw a spear at Gally, impaling him, the gun shot off and Y/N felt the grip in her loosen, Chuck fell to the ground. It was a blur to Y/N, Thomas was on the ground holding Chuck in his arms, blood covered the poor boy. She looked towards Gally, the gun laying beside him, his eyes barely open. She ran to him, kneeLing down. His body was covered with dark veins, the spear gorged into his chest.
“I’m sorry.” He cried. Blood dripped from his mouth. She gently stroked his cheek, wiping his tears like he did for her back at the Glade.
“It wasn’t you. It was the sting.” She assured him, he began to cough, she knew this wasn’t good for him.
“Is he okay?” He asked, she knew who he was referring to, she turned back to Thomas, he had placed Chuck on the ground, crying over the boy's limp body.
“Shh, it’s alright.” She gripped his hand. Blood everywhere. She was about to say something but the sound of the lab door swung open, she looked and a swarm of men in military armor barged the room, snatching the group up. She looked back at Gally, his eyes were closed. She tried to stay with him. She felt a set of arms wrap around her waist and pull her away from. She cried and lashed around trying to break free but it was useless. She took one more glance at the Gally before he was out of her sight.
There will be part two soon!

Y/N walked around the Miami International Autodrome like a lost puppy. As a journalist she thought she would be able to navigate her way around with no issues, but this isn’t what she was used to. Y/N works for a small sports column for her hometown, she knows nothing about sports, but she dreams to write in New York one day, accepting any job as her only way. Her assignment today was to interview a few of the drivers before and after the race.
The crowds were overwhelming, she wasn’t used to the amount of people. She was out of her element. She carried her notebook to her chest and tried to get by but it was nearly impossible, she thought she found a clearing and made her way towards it till she was accidentally shoved forward, causing her to fall to the ground. Around her was tons of commotion, she tried to stand up but bodies around her were preventing that.
“Make a clearing!” She heard someone yell. “Back it up!” She looked around and saw the people around her begin to disperse. A tall man wearing all black with a baseball cap on approached Y/N and helped her to her feet. She took a deep breath and felt around to make sure her pass to enter the designated areas was still attached to her.
“T…thank you.” She told him. He noticed her badge and gave someone across the way a small wave.
“You with the press?” He asked. She nodded her head. “Follow me.” He instructed her. She didn’t say anything, just followed.
The man led her down to where all the drivers and their teams resigned, she learned they were called the Paddocks.
“Are you security for the venue?” She asked him.
“I work for RedBull Racing.” He told her.
“That is impressive, I will definitely make sure to mention you in my article because you just saved my job today…I don’t know how these other journalists do it because it is insane here.” She replied.
“What is your article on?” He asked. His accent was clear to Y/N, she knew he wasn't from the US.
“I am supposed to interview a few of the drivers, ask them about the track, the location, just simple questions really. I don't think I’ll have any time now and I am not the type to bombard anyone.” She told him. They stopped at the paddocks and entered, she remained close, taking in the surroundings. She was taken back by the crew rushing around, making sure to stay out of the way.
“Verstappen! You are supposed to be getting ready!” Someone shouted. Y/N mentally cursed at herself and felt embarrassed. This whole time she was speaking with one of the known drivers and she had no idea.
“I-I am-” Max Verstappen looked down at her and smiled.
“After the race I would be glad to give you that interview if you would like.” He offered her.
“Y-Yeah that would be amazing.” She told him.
“Please enjoy the Energy Room, help yourself to any drinks or snacks…and enjoy the race of course.” She nodded her head and returned the smile.
When the race was completed, Y/N was just as confused as before, she didn’t understand the sport, but she did understand the excitement when Max won. Everyone in the paddocks were cheering, she quickly got up and left the Energy Room and waited patiently for Max to return. It took a while but when he did she was smiling with her notebook and pen in her hands.
“Did you enjoy the race?” He asked her.
“I did, I am not going to lie, I had no idea what was going on, but it was still fun to watch.” She admitted.
“I owe you an interview, come let’s sit.” He took her back to the Energy Room where they were able to speak without distractions. She placed her notebook on her lap and reviewed her notes and questions.
“I suppose the first obvious question I should ask you is…how was the win…being first on the I believe the word is Podium?” She asked, he let out a small chuckle and nodded his head.
“It felt great…I’m sorry but can I ask you a question?” She looked at him and nodded her head. “How did you become a sports journalist if you know nothing about this sport?” She looked down and fiddled with her pen.
“I live in a very small town with limited jobs that offer writing positions. I want to one day write in New York…in order to achieve that, I have to take any job I can to get the experience.” She told him. “In my defense I did my research and failed miserably. I didn’t even recognise you, which I really do apologize for because I am sure that made me look very unprofessional.”
“No need. I admire your hustle to get what you want. What small town do you live in?”
“T/N, S/N…it's barely on any maps, it's so small.” Max nodded his head. “Though ask anyone there and they would tell you we are known for our homemade style milkshakes. We have this festival every summer that has rides, animals, amazing food…and I am rambling.” She quickly stopped herself.
“That sounds really nice actually. When is this festival?” He asked her.
“In two days, this will be the first time I ever missed it.” She looked down at her notepad suddenly feeling a pint of sadness. She was thankful to be here but still she missed home.
“Why would you miss it?”
“I could only afford a round trip ticket to attend this race, my flight isn’t till Tuesday.” She admitted. “H…how about we finish this interview?” She asked, he didn’t say anything, he nodded his head.
Later that night as she was laying in the bed of her small hotel room, she reviewed the notes from the interview she had with Max. She couldn’t believe the day she had, how embarrassing she was, but she got an interview. She wished she was able to get more but this would have to do. She decided to call it a night and set her notebook on the small end table beside the bed and just as she was about to turn off the light, she heard a small knock on her door.
She cautiously got up and quietly walked towards the door, she got onto her tippy toes and looked out the peephole. Max? She unlocked the door and opened it.
“I hope this isn’t too late?” He asked her.
“I…n…no, what are you doing here…how did you-“
“I can answer your questions, really I can, but at the moment I suggest you pack your bags.” He told her with a smile on his face.
“Can you at least answer why?”
“Earlier today you mentioned that festival and how you never missed it before. It made me remember back when I was kid and we would always go to the festivals in the summer as a family-I want to take you home tonight so you won’t miss it.”
“Mr. Verstappen I really do appreciate that offer but I could never accept-“
“I would also like to see this festival and taste the homemade style milkshake.” He added. She couldn’t believe this, she couldn’t wrap her head around what was happening at the moment.
“I wouldn’t be able to pay you back for the air fare“
“No need…pack your bags and I’ll be just out front of the hotel in the red car.” Before she could protest, he left her alone.
The whole trip back home Y/N was trying to figure out how in the world she was on a plane heading home right now.
“I can see the gears turning in your head.” Max spoke, pulling her attention to him.
“This plane is really nice and it feels wrong not being able to pay you back for this.” She answered. “Then explaining to my boss why Max Verstappen decided to come back with me-“
“You don’t need to explain anything. I want you to be my tour guide of this town of yours.”
“Were you able to book a hotel or…we have a small bed and breakfast right in town.”
“Yeah I didn’t do any of that…my mind was on getting you on this plane.” She nodded her head and pulled out her phone.
“The owner of the bed and breakfast just happens to be my bestfriend and he will help.” She assured him with a smile. “No charge either, my way of paying you back for the plane ride.” She added.
“Are you close with your family?” He asked.
“With my Granny, yes. We are a big family but I never saw eye to eye with them. They will love you though trust me.”
“I am excited.” He gave her a big grin which made her smile in return.
Arriving in her hometown felt amazing. She was excited to sleep in her own bed, in her own small house, and get some good rest.
The two Ubered to her house where she dropped her bags off and got her car, where she drove Max to the bed and breakfast.
“You will love it here. Anthony has been my best friend since middle school, he is gay, and has made this bed and breakfast known around the states.” She told Max.
“I will make sure to leave a good review.”
“Anthony would probably have a heart attack…well here we are.” She parked the car in from the building and waited for Max to grab his things before entering.
“How was Miami!?” Anthony shouted, hugging the girl tight in his arms.
“It was fun, I didn’t go to the beach like you suggested but…I got the interview that will spark my career.” She told him.
“So you must be Max Verstappen. I must warn you I did look you up so I know everything about you. So as my guest you will be treated like royalty here.” Anthony took Max’s bags and led them to his room. “This will be your bedroom, the house is open all the time, help yourself to anything and everything. I have my phone number on the drawer over there, and the keys to the house are there as well.” Anthony explained.
“This place is amazing.” Max said.
“It was a foreclosure and I snapped it up and turned it into a getaway.” Anthony told him. “Now, how about we head to the bar and get some good bar food and drinks.” He suggested. Y/N looked up at Max.
“I am starving.” Max answered.
The bar was filled with locals. Y/N nervously looked around while Anthony grabbed a table. Y/N followed her best friend who thankfully found a table in the back of the bar.
“This place is nice.” Max said, sitting down beside Y/N. She nodded her head and smiled. She rarely came to the bar, which was for good reason. The owner has a son her age who now runs the place. He and his friends used to torment Y/N all through school up till they were seniors graduating.
“I’ll get us the drinks. Max I am going to order you the best burger you will ever have the honor of trying.” Anthony told Max, he left the two alone at the table to wait.
“How often do you come here?” Max asked Y/N.
“Rarely ever. Not really my ideal place to hang out.” She replied. “A lot of people that come here I know from school.” She added.
“Not friendly people?” He questioned.
“Not towards me, no. Never had been.” She admitted. “Some people just never grow up.” Just as he was about to say something in repose, Anthony returned with three large pitchers of beer.
“Let’s just say if you mention this man’s name here…drinks are free.” Anthony said. “Even in a small town you are known.” He said to Max.
“I guess I can’t complain when there is free beer sitting in front of me.” Max laughed.
Throughout the night the three drank, more like Anthony and Max, and endless visitors wanting a picture with Max. Y/N was having a fun time till a few people who she loathed with a passion made their way towards them.
“So little Miss. L/N really did it huh?” Alyssa Warrent and her little gang since middle school right behind her.
“And what exactly did she do Alyssa?” Anthony asked.
“Brought home a man. We never thought we would see the day.” She and her friends laughed. Y/N looked down at her glass of beer, wanting to just leave at that moment.
“My name is Max. It is nice to meet you.” Max introduced himself.
“So it’s true then? And he’s a celebrity racer too? Tell me Max, how much lying did she have to do to convince you to come here?” Y/N looked up at Max, nothing but an apologetic look in her eyes. He understood now what she meant when she said people weren’t friendly to her.
“Oh tons of lies.” Y/N eyes widened. “She told me her home was filled with friendly people…now I have met a few…but that’s about it.” Max told Alyssa. Y/N looked at Anthony and smiled. “If you will excuse us ladies we are having some drinks and would like our privacy.”
“Whatever, she’s not all perfect buddy boy.” Alyssa huffed away, her friends close behind.
“Oh my god, if you were gay Max I would throw you across this table now and have my way with you.” Anthony said laughing.
“It’s good to humble people when needed.” He laughed and winked at Y/N.
“Thank you.” She replied.
That night Y/N said her goodbyes to Max and Anthony and drove home. She was glad the night ended. She had a good time but the drama with the ladies at the bar really set her mood for the rest of night.
When she got home she climbed straight into bed and fell right to sleep.
The next morning she was up early with a cup of coffee and the sounds of Anthony and Max approaching her front door.
“She makes a better cup of coffee…besides she's probably already up.” She heard Anthony’s voice from her kitchen. The two men greeted her with good mornings and helped themselves to her coffee.
“What are the plans for today chickie?” Anthony asked her.
“Well, my Granny is having her summer solstice party and you know the whole town will be there so I figured we can go over now and help her?” Y/N suggested.
“Shit that is today isn’t it.”
“I get to meet your family then?” Max asked.
“I warn you now…they can be a lot to handle…those girls from last night…are just like them.” Y/N told him. “They will love you though.” She assured him.
“I never understood what you did to piss this town off girl but I love being on your side causing hell.” Max looked at Anthony and laughed.
“You are the only good thing to come from here darling.” Y/N answered.
The three arrived at Y/N’s Granny’s house. Her Granny owned a big property of farmland, her house was built by her Grandfather’s father who she always loved hearing stories about when she was a little girl. Thankfully for Y/N they were the only ones there at the moment which gave her time to properly introduce Max.
“I am so happy your trip went well.” Granny said. “I am also very happy to meet you Max…last time I saw someone as handsome as you was Elvis when her Grandfather took me to see him.”
“You saw Elvis live?” Max asked her. Her Granny left the three who were helping prep the food in the kitchen, and returned with a photo album. She placed the album on the counter and opened it up.
“Even got a couple pictures with him.”
“When I was little my Grandfather would play his song ‘I can’t help falling in love with you’, and he would dance with her around the living room.” Y/N explained while admiring the pictures of her grandparents.
“If only the romance was dead for our generation…and not being the only gay man in town.” Anthony sighed.
“I told you Anthony…that boy Harry is gay.” Y/N’s Granny said.
“And I told you he is as straight as a ruler.”
“We will see how straight he is tonight dear.” Anthony looked at Y/N in shock. Y/N laughed and closed the photo album.
The summer solstice went off without any problems. Y/N was able to introduce Max to basically everyone without issues. She was cleaning some dishes in her Granny’s house to get away from everyone for a bit. She looked out the window that overlooked the party and noticed Max chatting away with everyone. He looked like he fit in perfectly. She still couldn’t understand why he would want to come here on his days off, somewhere he knew nothing about, with someone he had just met. She thought for the slightest moment, could he have had feelings for her? She quickly pushed that thought from her head. Ever since she was middle school she was constantly teased. She was always chubby, didn’t have the perfect flawless skin, and was never in fashion with the new clothes.
“He is quite the handsome one.” Y/N was drawn from her thoughts when she saw her Granny beside her.
“I can’t believe he came here to just check out this town.” She said to her Granny.
“Was that the only reason? Seems like there could be another one.” Y/N looked down sadly at the now empty sink.
“I-I am certainly not the reason why he is here.”
“You always do that to yourself. Stop doubting everything good that may be coming to you and learn to accept them.”
“I never had a good thing come my way Granny. I got lucky enough to go to Miami, I got lucky enough to screw up one thing at this job and ran into him.”
“I don’t call that luck. I call that fate. When your grandfather and I met-“
“I don’t need you to rub it in my face about how you had the perfect relationship with grandpa…not everyone will have that.” Y/N wasn’t sure why she was getting so upset, she never gets angry with her Granny. “I have always dreamed of having what you two had but it was nothing but being called too ugly or too fat…never even having a boy hold my hand before Granny…I am almost twenty-two without a first kiss.”
Her Granny was silent, taking in what her granddaughter had just released on her. Y/N honestly didn’t want to hear it, she looked out the window and saw Max laughing with Alyssa and a few of her friends.
“That is who someone like him should be with.” Her Granny looked out and shook her head. “I am going to get a drink.” Y/N left the kitchen and went back outside, straight to the coolers to get a beer.
Nightfall came and most of the older crowd began to leave, leaving the younger adults to stay and drink. Y/N hadn’t spoken to Max since earlier in the day in the kitchen, she sat at one of the tables with her fourth beer alone.
“He is gay! Your grandmother is some kind of lady, let me tell you. We have a date next week.” Anthony approached.
“That’s really great.” Y/N said smiling, she meant it, she was happy for Anthony.
“You have been sitting here alone for hours. Tell me what’s going on.”
“I am four beers deep just enjoying the night.” Y/N told him.
“Bullshit-you barely drink anyways…is it because the sexy Dutchman that you brought here is talking with the people who hate us?” Y/N looked over at Max who was surrounded by almost everyone, everyone who had basically shut her down in school.
“It has nothing to do with him or them. There is nothing wrong.” She told him.
“Then let’s join them if there is nothing wrong.” Before Y/N could protest, Anthony pulled her to feet and dragged her over to the crowd.
“You have to tell me more about that racing.” A girl said, standing extremely close to Max.
“Oh do tell.” Anthony spoke, getting Max’s attention. Y/N refused to look at the man, at anyone for that matter.
“I was just getting ready to come over to you two.” Max said. “All this race talk makes me want a beer.” He laughed.
“I’ll get you one.” Y/N said wanting to get away from them.
“I’ll join you.” Max insisted. Y/N didn’t say anything, she began to leave, with Max right beside her. “Everything okay?” He asked. She looked up at him.
“Yeah, just a long day.” She lied. They reached the coolers and she bent down to get two beers. She handed one to Max and went to head back towards Anthony, till she was stopped by Max gently reaching for her arm and pulling her slightly back to him.
“You can talk to me, you know.” He told her.
“You don’t think it’s weird that you are here?” She asked him.
“Here as in the party or-“
“Here as in, I came back to a complete stranger's home after a day of knowing them weird.” She interrupted. Max shrugged. “It is Max.”
“I’m sorry if you are upset about it…you didn’t seem so much a couple days ago…did something happen between those days that made you-“
“Nothing happened!” She shouted loudly, she didn’t intend to but something inside her was hurting and she felt angry and sad. “I think I should go home for the night and get some sleep.” She handed him her unopened beer can and rushed to her car. Max stood there dumbfounded, trying to make sense of what just happened. She was about to follow her but a hand on his side made him stop, he looked down and saw her Granny.
“She didn’t mean that.” She assured him.
“Was it something I did?” He asked her.
“She and I had a small argument…Y/N was raised by her Grandfather and I. She grew up watching her Grandpa spoil me and herself of course, when she began to get older she wanted what we had, still does. She’s sheltered, she puts up this defense that no one will show her the love that she thinks she deserves because she doesn’t know what that is.” Her Granny explained.
“I didn’t know.” He told her. Her Granny smiled.
“I didn’t either till today.”
The night was long for Y/N, she couldn’t sleep. She felt like she made herself look like an idiot, which wasn’t hard for her to do. She got up and saw that it was five in the morning. She made coffee and checked her phone.
3 Missed Calls from Anthony.
1 New Text Message.
Anthony Bear: I don’t know what you did tonight but this boy is over here rambling and planning. I better see you tonight at the fair!
Planning? What was he planning?
Y/N wasn’t going to let her feelings get in the way of having a great time at the fair, she got dressed in a yellow sundress and brought her cardigan along in case the night got chilly. She met Anthony and Max at the opening of the fair and they entered together. She wanted to apologize to Max about how she acted but she didn’t want to ruin the fun time.
“What do we want to do first?” Y/N asked.
“Well I actually just got a text from Harry and I’m meeting him at the rides so want to head there?” Anthony asked, Y/N looked up at Max.
“That sounds fine with me.” He answered.
The three headed to the area with the rides and were greeted by Harry. Harry was a quiet man. The complete opposite from Anthony, but he was always very kind and sweet.
“Which death contraption do we want to attempt first?” Anthony asked, linking arms with Harry.
“The Ferris Wheel.” Max said, Y/N looked over at the ride and noticed it was the two seater type. She wanted to refuse but she also didn’t want to make Max ride alone.
“The Ferris Wheel it is then.” The four adults got in line and within seconds they were on the ride, Max and Y/N got on first. She nervously sat close to him which made her feelings worse. She wasn’t even sure how safe the ride was. It began to move and she looked forward, gripping the bar that was holding them in.
The silence was deafening. She had to say something.
“I want to apologize for last night…the way I yelled at you-that isn’t me and-“
“There is no need to apologize. You are right. Coming here not knowing you very well, intruding on your friends and family.”
“I am glad you are here…everyone is. Living in a small town doesn't give you the opportunities most people get, you have to put yourself out there. When I landed in Miami I was terrified when I got to the Autodrome…I just wanted to turn around and go back to the hotel, but then there you are. The first kind face that I was lucky enough to run into that day.”
“What did you argue with your Granny about last night?” Y/N was a little taken back by his question, but she wanted to be honest with him.
“It was stupid…over…wanting what she and my grandpa had. I watched them growing up showing each other unconditional love even on their bad days, never giving up, just pure love.” She looked down, embarrassed by her own words.
“Why can’t you? Anyone can have that.” Her heart sank, she knew he wouldn’t understand. He was this gorgeous man who had everything and could have anything.
“It doesn’t matter…looks like the ride is over.” She whispered. The ride stopped and the two got off, waiting for Anthony and Harry. Y/N wasn’t expecting to see the two men kissing when they saw them, she looked at Max and then back at her best friend with a smile on her face.
“This is a kid friendly place, boys.” Y/N teased, the two pulled away and smiled.
“Don’t be a hater honey.”
After a couple more rides the sun began to fall and Y/N realized she left her cardigan in her car, the cool breeze made her shiver. It was just Max and herself because Harry and Anthony wanted to see the animals. The two walked around and she hugged her arms around herself.
“Here.” He took off his light jacket and placed it around her. “Let’s check out the games.” He told her, she nodded her head and followed him to the game booths.
“I used to love this when I was younger.” Y/N said stopping at the water gun game, she sat down and gave the operator money for both she and Max.
“I should be paying for you.” Max said, sitting down.
“If I win you can pick out any prize you want.” She joked, he laughed.
“If I win…you owe me a dance.” She looked at him confused, before she could say anything, the bell rang and the game began, already she was behind. The bell rang again, she lost. The man handed Max a little soft Panda.
“How about that dance?” Max asked, handing her the little panda.
“You were serious?” She asked him. He took her hand and led her to a large tent where a live band was performing, where she saw Anthony and Harry already dancing together. He pulled her close to him, placing his hands on her hips. She wanted to squirm from his touch, but before she knew it the music slowed down and she looked up at Max.
“Don’t be so nervous.” He assured her. She gently places her hands on his shoulders.
“Everyone is looking.” She told him.
“Don’t focus on them. It’s about us, not them.” She wanted to agree but her heart was racing a mile a minute and she could feel everyone's eyes on her. She was about to just pull away but the moment the music started she felt butterflies form in her stomach.
I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You began to play.
“Do you think you don’t deserve this?” Max asked her. She looked up at him, and the two began to sway to the song. “When I met you, helped you off the ground…I knew I wanted to get to know you but I knew I didn’t have much time to do that because of work…”
“Don’t say anything you don’t mean…or because you feel like you have to.” She interrupted him.
“I mean every word. You are brilliant, ambitious, and beautiful.” She looked away from him but he gently forced her to look at him by gripping her chin. “Don’t question a thing about yourself and don’t let anyone else.”
“What are you trying to say?” She asked him.
“Let me prove to you that you can have what your grandparents had and more.”
“What about when you leave in a couple days?”
“When we leave, there are many more races to report and even though you don’t know much about the sport…I can help you.” She was taken back, he wanted her to leave with him.
“I’m not sure what to say.” She admitted.
“You have time to think about it, for now we have fun.” He leaned down and gently pressed his lips against hers. Her first kiss. She closed her eyes and kissed back, hoping she wasn’t terrible at it. He cupped her face, deepening the kisses. Her head was clouded and felt like her knees were about to give out.
“Not my best friend making out with Mr. Racer!” She heard the voice of Anthony. Y/N pulled away and looked up at Max. Was this what falling in love felt like?
