The Boy with the Violin
Imagine this.
Across from you in the second class four-seater, there’s this boy sitting, staring out of the window at the landscape rushing by. His elbow is resting on the side table, his hand supporting his chin. He hasn’t moved in almost an hour, believe it or not. If there was an image to visualize the concept of contemplation, this would be it. On the seat next to him lies his backpack, his blue coat and green scarf on top of it. Embroided on the scarf there’s this intricate image of a silver snake in an S-like shape. On his head he’s wearing a beanie, with lots of strands of black hair coming out from underneath, sticking in all kinds of directions. Apart from the snake on the scarf, nothing really seems to stand out. Blue jeans, a grey hoody, black worn-out converses, just like an everyday boy trying not to attract too much attention. He’s about seventeen or eighteen. In fact, he’s not really a boy anymore. He’s in the grey zone between the teenage years, when everything is arranged and scheduled for you, mostly by parents and school, and the adult life, when all of a sudden you have to find your own way. Maybe he’s thinking about the future, about what lies ahead of him after a period of studying. Has he already made his career choice or is he planning on going on adventures first? There won’t be a lot of time and opportunity later in life for that, but maybe he doesn’t realize it yet.
He’s definitely alone on this journey. Why is he all by himself on this long train ride? Will there someone be waiting for him at the final destination? That could be possible. However, if that would be the case, why hasn’t he used his phone to send messages or chat? In fact, he hasn’t used his phone this whole journey, not even for listening to music. Maybe he doesn’t even have a phone. He’s an introvert, so much is obvious, a quiet person. Not that he’s ignorant. He’s probably more intelligent and observant than people give him credit for. He’s certainly not the person to flaunt his good qualities. Does he prefer it that way? On the side table there’s a Lonely Planet, but other than to serve as a coaster for a cup of coffee he bought from the cart that passed by a long time ago, he hasn’t used it for its intended purpose.
There’s a ringing sound coming from the boy’s coat on top his backpack. So he has a phone after all. After a moment of frantic searching he retrieves the item from one of the pockets. As he looks at the screen to identify the caller, you can see him rolling his eyes in annoyance, but while he’s doing that, he’s failing to prevent the corners of his mouth lifting upwards anyway. Despite this, there’s no emotion noticeable in his voice when he answers the call. He speaks in a calm and collected way.
“Hey dad”
(…)
“No, I can see your name on the screen when you’re calling me”
(…)
“I’m still on the train.”

“Yeah I know dad, but…”

“I just prefer it like this okay”
(…)
“Yeah I know”
(…)
“I know”
(…)
“Try not to worry okay, I’m fine.”

“I know dad”

“No, I’ve arranged that already. I used booking-dot-com.”

“No dad, that’s perfectly safe. It’s what all muggl… what everyone else uses.”

“Yeah, I can imagine grandpa being fascinated”

“Yeah okay, I’ll do that”

“That too, don’t worry”

“Yes I will”

“Thanks dad, I appreciate it”

“Love you too. Send love to mom, James and Lily”

“O my god stop. Yes I am a decent brother sometimes”

“Yeah I know you didn’t mean it that way”

“Yeah…bye”
After the conversation ends, the boy keeps staring at his phone, biting his lip for a solid three minutes. He then sighs, puts the phone back in the pocket and retakes his previous posture of staring out of the window. There’s still about an hour of journey to go before the boy goes off the train, disappearing into the city. The purpose for his visit remains unclear. Maybe he’s just enjoying some time alone, trying to be an innocent boy for another while before adult life inevitably catches up and presents him with challenges he’s not yet aware of. Or maybe there’s another reason. We simply don’t know at this point.

Finally!
Albus is standing next to his hotel twin bed, in just his boxers and with his hands in his hair. On top of the bed the contents of a backpack are spread out. Two pairs of jeans, five t-shirts in different colors, three hoodies and a couple of boxers and socks. That’s it. The backpack itself is carelessly thrown away upside down in the corner. His hands move from his hair to his face, covering his eyes, before he slowly lets them slide down, letting out a loud groan of despair.
Finally I wrote a new chapter for ‘The Boy with the Violin’. I’m so sorry for the long wait, I hope you’ll enjoy it anyway!
