I always find it particularly funny when people say that Ranni is just manipulating the player and that she’s using them as a means to a much more nefarious secret end, because if you actually pay attention to the game and character then one thing becomes abundantly clear.

Ranni literally cannot lie to save her life.

No seriously, she’s a cunning mastermind but she is a fucking terrible liar. When a random tarnished comes looking for her and accuses her of the assassination of Godwyn, she just goes “yeah? And what of it?” as if she’s not admitting to being the one behind the biggest act of heresy in known history. That's not something you should just say to people, least of all a tarnished!

You get her alone with you and within seconds she’s rambling about her plan, her past, her family, her friends that she adores with all of her heart, how you’re actually a lot like them, nevermind forget that last part please-

on putting to rest,

Thinking of Rosinante laying on top of his mother’s form, as she lays next to a deepening hole in the ground. Rosinante tries to stifle his wails into her still chest, as his father digs his wife’s grave yet again, to exhaustion. Rosinante wails as his brother also picks up a shovel. It’s taller than Doflamingo, but his skinny little arms wield it like every other time he’s used it. Like a weapon.

It’s difficult for a half-starved man to dig a hole this large, this deep. Eventually, Doflamingo is sick of watching his father struggle.

When he jumps into the hole after his father, it is not out of pity, or to relieve Homing of his burden. His father is taking too long. The final straw is when Rosinante has cried so long and so hard, that his stomach rejects the meager meal they had shared that morning, and hacks it up next to their mother like she will be waiting to wipe his face and rub his back.

She’s dead, so she doesn’t.

Father tries to voice his objection to his son’s participation, but Doflamingo silences him with a venomous retort.

“If we wait for you to be done, we won’t have anything left to bury.”

Rosinante starts keening again, and Father lets him be. Silent tears streaming down his face as he watches his oldest son’s back.

Doflamingo’s spade pierces the earth again, and again. He breaks roots, displaces rocks, and moves the very earth to his will in order to make room for someone who never belonged to it in the first place.

His hands bled with the fury and force in which he held onto his shovel. He wouldn’t waver, though. He was not weak. Not like his pathetic excuse for a father. His mother and brother’s pathetic excuse of a protector.

Doflamingo knew, as he dug deeper and deeper, that he would do whatever it took to protect Rosinante from their father’s inability to protect. Should have done something about it sooner. Maybe then, little Rosi wouldn’t be gurgling into Mother’s breast, choking on his own tears and bile and grief.

By the time Doflamingo finished, Rosinante had cried himself into something like a catatonic, half asleep, half exhausted state. He said nothing as Doflamingo hiked him up onto his own bony back, and nothing as Doflamingo left their father to the task of lowering their mother into the ground.

Father had dug a grave large enough for all of them to fit inside, before he had even begun to attempt this one. Doflamingo wasn’t going to lie down in it.

His mother didn’t have a choice, now. Father had taken that from her.

Doflamingo knew he had made his own.
