Mononucleosis Awareness Post

So I caught Mono participating in Hot Girl Summer™ (jk jk lmao) but I did get Mono, and this shit is not a fucking joke. If you feel like you might have it, please go to the doctor. Over the past 4 weeks, I have been going through literal medical hell from complications. I’m gonna list the symptoms I’ve had and if you feel like you might have it, go get looked at. I thought Mono was something only horny ass teens got in high school playing spin the bottle, I’m 26 (27 next month) and was NOT expecting this shit at all.

Fatigue

My first symptom that something was wrong was fatigue. This is not normal, everyday fatigue. This is actually waking up and feeling like the world is ending when you take your first step, fatigue. I couldn’t keep my eyes open. While driving, I put my emergency break on at red lights because I was afraid I would fall asleep while at the standstill. At work, if there were no calls, my head was down (luckily, my boss is only here twice a week so I could get away with this). At home, I was in bed by 6PM and when you do sleep, it’s immediate. There is no gradual lulling off to sleep. It’s face-meet-pillow-meet-morning-alarm type of sleep. But I was still tired no matter how much I slept so I started using No Doze to counteract the effects. At first, it was fine, but even then, I still had the underlying fatigue. It got so bad, I drove over a friend’s house in Greenbelt, MD which is about an hour and a half away with rush hour traffic, using every bit of energy I had in my body to get to her, because she said she would take care of me, which she did. But by the time I pulled up to her house, I basically almost fell out of the driver side door when she opened it for me. That is not an exaggeration, that is the level of exhaustion I felt from just driving that far without sleeping. We thought I had the flu or something flu-like, so she gave me fluids and alot of Day & NightQuil. It made the symptoms lessen, but it never made them go away.

Sore Throat

At the beginning, my throat merely felt scratchy. This lasted for about 3 days, before I knew it, my voice was gone and my throat was in so much pain I gave up talking. The pain is not akin to Strep Throat, if you’ve had that before. It is actually worse. My throat was swollen as a symptom of the virus, but it graduated into its own infection of severe Tonsillitis. It was so severe that I actually began having trouble swallowing from the amount of swelling that it caused. I had to receive a steroid injection in my butt to counteract the swelling and start methylprednisone (which wasn’t strong enough and I had to go back for regular prednisone 20mg). I couldn’t eat anything without pain, so I stuck to drinking a lot of fluids and ice water. Ice water became my guardian angel because my throat was in a constant state of burning pain. I also grew exodus on the back of my throat, past my tonsils, as a result of the infection in my throat, and had to gargle salt water like crazy everyday to get them out. The exodus hurts, it is hard and feels like cement on the back of your throat and it makes the Tonsillitis 10x worse than it already is. I didn’t have a voice at all for 12 days, I had to use a dry erase board for all interactions (it’s quicker than typing on my phone.)

Nausea

Now my case may be different because the doctors keep telling me my nausea shouldn’t have gone on as long as it did and that I need to go see a Gastroenterologist ASAP but that’s a different story for a different post. Nausea was my worst and most persistent symptom to date. The kind of nausea you may feel will be persistent. I woke up nauseous to the point of my mouth salivating as though I were about to vomit everyday for about 2-2.5 weeks. This never settled. There was never a time my mouth was not salivating, I had to begin keeping paper cups at my desk to spit the residual saliva into throughout the day because it never subsided. One day, I had a salad for lunch from Panera even though I wasn’t hungry, I knew I should try to eat something. (By this time, my throat had made some progress and I could swallow some whole things.) I immediately regretted that decision when I lay in bed at midnight holding my stomach like the world was ending. I was so nauseous that I couldn’t get myself together enough to even get out of bed. The thing that makes the nausea symptom so bad (for me) is that it never made be actually vomit, it just created the sensation of needing to. Eventually, I broke down and stuck a straw down my throat just to alleviate the symptom a bit and threw up the salad, and it didn’t even look like it’d been digested properly. That made the nausea go away for the night, and after that I gave up eating anything solid hoping that would prevent any future nausea, spoiler alert: I was wrong. My salivating mouth picked up right where it left off, it was as though all I went through the night before didn’t even matter. My stomach was empty and still nauseated. That night, the nausea was so bad that I just knew something was off and I drove myself to the ER (Note: I drive myself to the ER that is less than 10-minutes away all the time to save money on an ambulance, if you feel you are not safe to drive, dial 911, it is better to just pay the ambulance than cause an accident and make your situation worse than it already is.). When I got there, I was beyond exhausted, nauseous, dizzy, I just felt like I was dying. The doctor brought me back, took my vitals, asked the usual questions. I told him about the nausea, the Mono diagnosis, he said he wanted me to get a temporary room while he ran some tests. I got a room and a nurse came in and gave me a shot of Zofran for the nausea that did absolutely nothing. It was so bad that when he came back in, I asked for Ipecac or a straw to induce vomiting again. Alarmed, he said they wanted to avoid me vomiting and gave me an additional shot of Zofran. That helped that time, but I still just felt overall terrible. The doctor came in later and told me my potassium levels were extremely low, explaining the extreme fatigue and dizziness, that my liver was swollen from the Mono, and that the nausea was alarming and he would be admitting me for treatment. I was shocked that this virus had done such a number on me. My throat had even worsened and was now even more swollen and painful than it was before (I hadn’t gotten the 20mg prednisone script yet.). I spent 2 days with an IV in my arm, eating mushy foods and sleeping in the hospital. I had to take off work because I was in no shape to even drive there, let alone get anything done. After the 2 days went by, I actually felt back to my normal self! I was so fucking happy to exist and not feel like dying after weeks of wanting to that I went home and started cleaning my room. I had let it get atrocious from not feeling well or feeling like doing anything besides sleeping. Shortly after I began, the fatigue kicked in, the only symptom to never leave, and I sat my ass down and watched Rick & Morty with Sebastia and went to sleep instead, which was probably the safer bet. Fast forward 8 nausea-free days, and guess what’s back??? It’s tolerable now, but still an extreme nuisance. I get my Zofran prescription and it does didly fucking squat to alleviate the nausea. I call the Urgent Care that diagnosed me and ask if there’s anything stronger for nausea and they tell me all the stronger shit will have me bedbound and loopy. Bills gotta get paid so we can’t have that. So that night, in a moment of nauseous desperation, I took double the dosage of the Zofran to alleviate the discomfort. Now, I understand I shouldn’t have done this, but I was DESPERATE and afterward, I felt great. It was the first time the medicine had done wtf the doctors said it would do and the way it was supposed to: quick, fast and in a motherfucking sprint. So I stupidly called the Urgent Care to ask them about the nausea medicine again (I have such a good relationship with this UC for some reason, probably because I hate my primary.) and told them what I’d done the night before and that I was now out of nausea meds and needed a refill before it came back, which was all true. Jessica, the nurse I always saw, was alarmed and spoke to the doctor on duty there, and told them about what I did. Then they cut me off and said to go ask my Primary for the refill because I’ve been utilizing them way too much (long story short). But she also said that I shouldn’t need that much Zofran and something else is going on and I need to be seen by a Gastro. That $40 co-pay appointment is still pending. Andddd I’ve been nausea-free for about a week now, but as I type this, my mouth just began salivating so it looks like I’m gonna be dealing with that again soon. Fuck.

Dizziness

My dizziness didn’t come full force until about 4 days ago (Week 4). I was out at a shopping center getting groceries and while I was parking at a nearby Dunkin Donuts, the world legit started slanting. I felt like I’d been drugged all of a sudden. My skin felt cold and clammy, everything felt out of focus and I immediately needed to lie down. Luckily, it came right after I’d put my car in park and had the opportunity to put my seat back and do so. I waited about 10 minutes maybe, and then I felt ok enough to get out and go get some food because I thought I was just hungry because I hadn’t eaten yet. Even standing in line and waiting for the food afterward was difficult. I had to sit down or else I’d fall down. I got back in my car and ate and laid down again, went back to the store to get eggs I forgot to grab before, and on the walk back to my car almost walked into another parked car. Of course, people saw and probably thought I was drunk or something. I was embarrassed but didn’t have the motor skills energy to explain the situation of feeling like I was in 2 bodies at once. This symptom has come and gone as it pleases, but luckily after a good 2-hour nap that day when I got home, I felt alot better.

Poor Appetite

While battling this virus, I have lost 10 pounds and still counting in the past 4 weeks. While it’s great to fit into clothes I was once too thick to get past my thighs, it is not the way I wanted to lose the weight. In the beginning, I always felt full no matter what, which made me not want to eat, combined with the nausea, it made eating something I just wasn’t in the mood to ever do. This went on for weeks, which caused the weight loss. I learned later that my swollen liver pressing against my stomach is what caused the sensation of fullness, hence, not ever feeling like I should eat. Now, my appetite has returned, and I’ve been eating nothing but starchy, fatty nonsense my diet never would’ve allowed before I got sick. And even with all the newfound calories I’ve been non-stop digesting (seriously guys, pizza 5 days straight, bread bowls, bacon egg and cheese croissants, cheesecake, donuts...) I’m still shedding pounds. My Gold’s Gym Membership is gathering dust because I can’t go workout with my body still always in fatigue-mode and it’s probably just not kosher to do with this kind of virus. My mom said I should celebrate for now until it becomes a cause for concern later, but I think I should probably be concerned now since the earlier you find something out the better health-wise. I lowkey did some research and think I might have Hepatitis-C from the virus, which is curable, but sucks all the same if I’m right. I inherited my mother’s extremely poor immune system, so I really wouldn’t be surprised. I’ll post before and after photos of my weight loss separately, don’t want Tumblr turning me into the Face of Mono™ because of this post.

Swollen Lymph Nodes

This was one of the lesser symptoms that went away by week 2-2.5. They are definitely sensitive and noticeable. I found that icing them alleviated a lot of the discomfort and made it tolerable, but overall, these were the least of my worries.

I wanted to sit down and tell this story as a warning to everyone taking it for the first time not knowing much about it, as I did myself. I am 20 years old and decided to start taking birth control for the first time and got prescribed them from my doctor. Easy peasy. But about 6 weeks into the pills I become violently ill. I was so nauseas I couldn't move sometimes and I threw up a few times a day. I also had chills/ hot flashes, painful headaches all day every day, high fevers on and off and my body just hurt. But at the time I had placed this to be a flu of some sort and just suffered through the worst of it, while continuing to take my pills. It lasted about 6 days total with 4 really bad days.

That Thursday I was feeling ok, I didn't throw up and I ate some food for the first time in a week (only toast but it was something). So I headed out with my mom to visit family. But once we got into the car I noticed something off. I had looked in the mirror and the whites of my eyes were solid yellow, not faint like anything I had seen before just bright yellow. I pointed it out to my mom and she looked over at me for probably the first time that morning and started to panic at my very yellow tinted skin. I told her I felt fine though and tried to get her to continue on to my cousins but she didn't seem too keen on that idea. Reminder: Always listen to moms.

We drove for a bit trying to figure out what to do as I didn't want to go to the emergency room and be told it was nothing. I called my primary care physician and wanted to see if I could be seen there because at this point I had suspicions that it was my birth control and I wanted to talk to the person that prescribed them to me. Now in my panicked state trying to talk to them on the phone the receptionist told me and I quote (because this will always stick with me) "well I'm not a doctor but I don't think birth control can do that." We decided on urgent care because they were completely unhelpful and I needed answers.

The doctor there had told me I was clearly jaundiced and did a test to rule out mono and suggested we go to the er to get blood work because it'd be much faster. Now let me tell you the urgent care doctor was the only professional, trustworthy doctor I have seen in all of this experience, which is truly unfortunate. We go to the er and immediately check in because the urgent care doctor called ahead and recommended I was seen. Every person that stepped in the room continued to ask me why I was there because in the fluorescent hospital lights I no longer was very yellow and looked completely fine otherwise. So I explained the entire struggle to each person, putting emphasis that I read that this could be caused by the birth control and that I was concerned about that. After no one believed me and we had multiple doctors that claimed it wasn't real just because they hadn't seen it before I felt kind of defeated.

After they got my blood work back they found that my liver enzyme levels were critically high. Now we're talking they were at 400-500+ when they were supposed to be at 40. Everyone treated me a little different after that and I still was beyond confused why I was there and what was going to happen. They did an ultrasound and found nothing, ruling out kidney stones. And they admitted me overnight. Now I went from no one thinking anything was wrong with me to being admitted overnight in a matter of 2 hours. I'm in a panic the whole time because of course not a single doctor tries to explain anything to me, just ask me more questions I've been asked by 3 other doctors and 2 nurses. I went through the night and got no new information. They advised me to not take my pill that night and continued to take my blood with no changing results. I was there until 7 pm on Friday and didn't see a single doctor until 5pm, who ultimately told me there was nothing they could do for me there and to get more blood work on Monday.

Now the whole experience that Monday and during the whole visit was chaos and that story is for a different time because it was just stupidity and won't help explain this one. Now I was discharged from the hospital with what they called a "Drug Induced Liver Injury" which means my liver reacted negatively to the estrogen in the pill and over time it could've caused my liver to fail if I hadn't gone to the er and just lived with it. I was yellow for about two weeks still after being discharged and was a little more tired as my liver was trying to heal itself. Honestly I still don't know how to continue on after and what my next steps are but I wanted to share this story so hopefully someone can notice the signs quicker than I did and stop taking the pills. They say this is very rare but it can still happen and it's definitely not something I thought could've happened to me or even happened in general. This is a huge PSA to trust your gut because your body is yours and these other people, even though they are doctors, don't know as much about you as you do.

Because the west coast of North America is on fire, and our weather for the last week or so has been “smoke and heatwave”* my asthma flared, and not to be outdone, my myasthenia gravis one-upped it by like a factor of 90.

On Sunday I realized it was getting bad, but it was ANBU Legacy writing day and I was excited to be writing, so I maybe pushed it a little and didn’t call the advice line until 4-ish. (Also because I knew in my heart of hearts that they would put me on prednisone, and I didn’t want to be on prednisone. #denial)

But call I did, and told them how I couldn’t crutch 20 feet without resting, and was short of breath, and they said go to ER! And I said, “but I just need steroids, how about Urgent Care?” And they said ok.

So Ryan and I went to Urgent Care where they took one look at me and said, “seriously? Go to ER!” So we went. And predictably, they did a breathing treatment and started me on 60 mg prednisone, and said call your neurologist tomorrow. And we went home.

The next morning I called the neurology advice nurse and ran her through the whole shebang, and she said she’d tell the doc and he’d call back with advice. But before he did, the nurse from my primary care doc called, and well.... basically I was worse. I couldn’t talk in complete sentences unless I was reclining, and my voice was nasal and slurring, and I was choking on thin liquids, and I couldn’t walk 10 feet. I’m sure you can guess what she said...

So I woke Ryan up (it was after 10 so I didn’t feel too bad about it) and we went back to ER. We packed all my overnight stuff and bipap and brought it with, because denial might be strong but it was pretty clear where this was headed.

This is me in the ER not being able to hold my head up or keep my eyes open or smile properly.

They did many more things this time, like strength tests and blood tests and chest X-rays, and said “go to admission to hospital, do not pass go, do not collect $200.”

The doctor from the night before was kind of clueless, but the morning doctor was super on top of things (and CUTE) and made me and Ryan feel really comfortable. They gave me a megadose of iv steroids while I was still in ER: 1000 mg of solumedrol, which is equivalent to 1260 mg of prednisone, which is frankly insane, but I found some papers about “pulse dosing corticosteroids” showing good results, so it’s legit.

I finally got a room about 5. At 9:30 Monday night, they gave me 120 g of IVIG—also a massive dose. In fact it didn’t finish til 2:00 pm Tuesday. At which point they gave me another 1000 mg of solumrdrol. Omg so many steroids.

The good news is I am a little stronger today!Also I realized that I really should have just been wearing the bipap all along, even though I didn’t think I was that short of breath, because it helps a lot and conserves my energy.

Other exciting developments in hospital-land: Irish PT guy, Brian, is CUTE. PT nearly flattened me, though. And by PT I mean strength tests lying down and a valiant attempt to stand at the bedside that lasted upwards of 15 seconds!

Ukrainian Care Coordinator is CUTE, and kind of flirty. He brought me a brochure about neuro rehab, but I’m hoping I won’t have to go, if the current treatment turns me around in a day or so.

CUTE speech therapist with two different colored eyes has me on chopped soft food and thickened liquids. She makes a trifecta of cute, and I haven’t even gotten to all the astonishingly cute ER doctors and nurses. @saunterleftside and I suspect Kaiser has a secret hiring directive.

I’m still very weak, but improving. I can keep my eyes open, speak more clearly, and count all the way to 14 on a single breath!

The hospital pharmacy doesn’t have my usual brand of IVIG, Gammunex-C, so I had to get Flebbogamma, which I react to. We ran it slower than normal, and with iv fluids, but the IVIG headache and joint pain is annoying, so I gave in and took Tramadol.

My nurses are universally awesome, and I liked the hospitalist doctor this morning. The neurologist on call looks like he’s about 12, but was nice. My roommate is friendly, talkative, loud, and has a lot of visitors. Fortunately I have earphones and podcasts.

I’m taking lots of selfies so I have good propaganda to add to my appeal fo sponsors 😂 for the Portland MG walk at the end of September.

Before you answer, please read this thoroughly. I am a student and Illinois Resident. I have PPO health insurance in Illinois that I pay out of pocket for. $1000 deductible, 100% covered. I go to school in Florida and have employer insurance in FL (ever since Sept 2008), but it's an HMO. The PPO my job offers has no deductible but is 80/20 coverage, so I opted the HMO. For the average person, it would make no sense to have 2 policies, but I'm not ordinary. I have many pre-existing conditions (some I was born with), hence the Illinois coverage. In Dec of last year, before my FL insurance kicked in, I had a multitude of issues which caused me to have to use my BCBS of IL in Florida where I'm attending school. Many of those things are at bay now, but for doctor visits, exams, etc to arise other than routine check ups, should I start using my FL HMO insurance and just use my IL insurance for when I visit home during breaks? Or should I just drop my FL insurance altogether? The reason this is an issue is b/c I am afraid I my rates will go up or they drop me if I continue to use my insurance which was meant to be for IL, but I have been using it in another state. Yes they will cover b/c it's PPO and it falls under the BCBS umbrella, but this is the risk I take. I will NOT drop my Illinois insurance because I have pre-existing issues that is NOT covered by my FL insurance, so switching isn't even on option. Plus they keep doing layoffs and my certainty at this job isn't guaranteed. Furthermore, I keep reading about fraud, this is not my intent. So last week the side gate to my house was left open and my dog got out. She bit one of my neighbors down the street, I'm guessing out of fear (she is a rescue dog). Well that's what they have me on to treat for infertility and PCOS. Infertility issues aren’t talked about a lot however I’m not even going to get into them. This is rant is about PCOS and how treatment doesn’t seem to be necessary and the only answer any one can give us is birth control. Unless you are trying to conceive. Then insurance doesn’t consider treatment a medical necessity and you pay out of pocket for either some really awesome health insurance (that I’ve never heard of) or just paying for treatment itself.

Androgens are male hormones that females also make. High levels of these hormones affect the development and release of eggs during ovulation. “

My issue lies with the list of symptoms as it is with most information presented in a casual informative way, it’s not taken seriously. Not every one has all symptoms and for some they may have some more or less extreme than others. However when talked about in the medical community, any professional community the extremity needs to be made aware. There are better options than one treatment for every woman and it needs to be address at a political level. Women’s health has been a joke for far to long. When it explains “increased hair growth” its not saying any thing about painful ingrown hairs, or actually growing beards and mustaches. Or having to wax your face, bleach, pluck or shave daily. Its not your face either, its your whole body, tummy, back, chest, arms legs, butt, toes hair growth kinda goes crazy. Pelvic pain is listed here as well. Just pelvic pain. Not abdominal pain so severe you may black out, have dizziness, vomit, be unable to stand, be sent to the ER to have a doctor tell you all women have periods but giving you pain relief its the most humane thing to do. (My exact experience) It also doesn’t say that while your body is doing other things it needs to do that the pelvic pain can become epic-ally worse very quickly. You ate? Well now when you stand up and pressure is put on your ovaries BAM! That didn't kill you? ok now your body is going to digest the food and force it out of you! Then a sharp pain goes through your entire body and you faint, on the toilet, shitting. Don’t bother having to pick any thing up! Bending over is extremely risky! And not in the hot guy bends you across the table way. The worst part is that it may start with pain just during mensuration.... mine has escalated to a small mild pain all of the time with occasional sharp pains then extreme pain during menses. Then there’s nausea and diarrhea which is listed on most other sites and not this one. This can cause dehydration (Which has also happened to me.) As well as mentally traumatizing social situations. As in accidents, yea like you aren’t sure you can go out of your house because you 1 may have to pull over to puke or 2 may crap your pants at your mother-in-laws garden party. Cysts on the ovaries is one that we all pretty much know. Hence the name PCOS. Which not a lot of women know cysts are normal, What they don’t know is that with PCOS the cysts may not go away, they may rupture, or they may go away and come back! Cysts may skip a month!. There is also different types, some on the inside some on the out side and you know what really really sucks? When you have been in horrible pain so you go to the ER then that doctor tells you its just your period and to follow up with your primary doctor in 2-4 days (maybe longer) then they order a ultrasound which is in a couple days and by then you don't have an active cyst at the time. Guess what? you then have to pray that the next time it happens your primary care doctor has an opening and that they feel like you need urgent care. It may be a merry go round like this if you aren't aware of what “could be” wrong with you and demand proper treatment in the ER. How is a non-doctor supposed to know? Exactly. Weight gain, diabetes, etc. Doctors will try and recommend weight loss in some cases for individuals with PCOS. In many cases it could help! Truly! However, PCOS can cause weight gain. When my symptoms got really bad, I was doing physical therapy for an old injury 3 times a week for 3 hours each time for almost a year. I had a physical therapist working with me on strength training too, its not like I went for massages and such. I had gotten past that point. I sweat, I turned beat red, and I had other physical therapists telling me they couldn't do what he was having me do. I trained until my ulnar nerves freaked out and I had to stop. This being sad... I lost no weight. Yeah I bet you are ready to tell me muscle weighs more than fat etc.... I didn’t slim down.... and I didn’t get stronger. NOTHING HAPPENED. As we increased weight, my body started breaking down, my hip flared up, my back went out, I started getting shooting pains down my arms and legs as I slept, my left ankle went out and then my ulnar nerves. Some days my arms would swell and I couldnt fit them into some of my shirt sleeves for a few days. My point is, when your body is sending out hormones like it doesn’t know what its doing it effects your entire body. Loosing fat, building muscle hair growth and mental health.... Speaking of, I was diagnosed bipolar when I was a teen. It’s been so long I can’t even remember what year. My issues have been pretty successfully managed since I was 21 and Im 30 now. A few years ago, about when the pcos symptoms first started. ( I can connect that now since I'm looking back on it, I couldn't at the time) My anxiety started getting worse.... and as my therapist and I tried coping techniques then increases in medication then added one med and that one didn't work, then added another.... I went from taking 25mg of lamital, to 200 for mood stabilization and another SSRI. Sure they do blood tests. Check to see if your pregnant and check to see what level of medication is in my blood and do drug tests to make sure I'm not doing street drugs along with treatment. I have no idea when the last time they checked my hormones, if they have ever. Well... things were ok on all of that medication. My anxiety wasn't 100% figured out when we decided to try and get pregnant but it was extremely manageable. Then as the months went by my moods got darker and darker. I went from being manageable to not waxing my face any more, then not cleaning the house, not getting out of bed and having naps through out the day. The doctor put me back on my SSRI and Im only to stop it when I find out I'm pregnant. Sure the sites tell you about pcos causing anxiety or depression.... which is just a quick fleeing statement as to exactly what that means or what it means for some one who already has issues with those things. I’ve been on clomid for four days now. I take it for 6 days, it will hopefully make me ovulate so I can get pregnant. In 2 days I wasn’t tired all day and took no naps, in 3 days I cleaned house and actually felt positive and wasn't nauseated. Today is day 4, I’m not tired, I’m not nauseous and its the first day in so many months that I’ve actually just been generally happy. I still have just a in general abdominal pain however this is the first time in over a year that I'm occasionally pain free... I don’t know what will happen after 6 days. Will it come back? Will my mood get darker? who knows? Will I be insane? Treatment varies for the individual. In my case I started having symptoms while on birth control. For others birth control may be the answer they are looking for. However, if hormonal therapy is needed insurances don’t want to cover just treatment for pcos. If I wasn't trying to have a baby, they wouldn’t be trying hormones first, instead they would be sticking a scope in me. (Which if this treatment doesn't work they still may.) Doctors literally have to make sure they write up the need for procedures fro treatment for pain etc. because if it smells slightly like some one is trying to get pregnant then it wont be covered. ITS IMPORTANT TO OVULATE! Again: Women with PCOS have greater chances of developing several serious health conditions, including life-threatening diseases. Recent studies found that:More than 50 percent of women with PCOS will have diabetes or pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance) before the age of 40.The risk of heart attack is 4 to 7 times higher in women with PCOS than women of the same age without PCOS.Women with PCOS are at greater risk of having high blood pressure.Women with PCOS have high levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and low levels of HDL (good) cholesterol.Women with PCOS can develop sleep apnea. This is when breathing stops for short periods of time during sleep.Women with PCOS may also develop anxiety and depression. It is important to talk to your doctor about treatment for these mental health conditions.Women with PCOS are also at risk for endometrial cancer. Irregular menstrual periods and the lack of ovulation cause women to produce the hormone estrogen, but not the hormone progesterone. Progesterone causes the endometrium (lining of the womb) to shed each month as a menstrual period. Without progesterone, the endometrium becomes thick, which can cause heavy or irregular bleeding. Over time, this can lead to endometrial hyperplasia, when the lining grows too much, and cancer. Sorry for copying and pasting so much.
