🎭 Option 2: The two of you don’t get along because your personalities clash too much. Tim thinks you’ve got an attitude problem, you think he’s got a stick up his ass. Both of you are always sassing the other one but eventually all that personality tension melts away into romantic tension (and you make out)

🎭 If you got option one going for you: Once your soft side is revealed, Tim will probably tease you for it. Like, you’ve got this tough exterior going on but on the inside you’re all soft and mushy. (He loves it tho)

🎭 If you’ve got option two going for you: After learning how much of a softie you actually are on the inside, his own icy exterior melts as well.

🤍 He’ll wait for you to come to him to initiate any kind of friendship, and he won’t be holding his breath for it either (unlike Brian, who trusts that you’ll come to him when you’re ready, EJ doesn’t have that same kind of trust)

Colorado’s Michael Bennet introduces a federal bill to help save the local news Your weekly roundup of Colorado local news & media

Colorado’s Democratic U.S. senator, Michael Bennet, this week introduced legislation that, if passed, would examine ways in which the federal government might try to help fix our country’s bottomed-out local news business model.

By now, readers of this newsletter should not need a disaster reel refresher about why some might believe such help is necessary.

The Future of Local News Commission Act would create a federal panel of 13 people who have “relevant experience—in print, digital, and broadcast news, as well as the business, civil society, and research communities—from diverse regions of the country,” according to a summary provided by Bennet’s office. To serve on the panel, the lawmakers are looking for, among others, a “digital-native or digital-first news editor,” a “nonprofit news outlet journalist or editor,” and a local county editor or journalist who works for an outlet “with circulation or readership of not more than 75,000.”

So what would these commission members do? Among other duties, the bill says they would:

“Examine the state of local news and the ability of local news to sustain democracy by meeting the critical information needs of the people of the United States.”

“Examine potential new mechanisms for public funding for the production of local news to meet the critical information needs of the people of the United States and address systemic inequities in media coverage and representation throughout the country.”

“Provide recommendations on mechanisms that the Federal Government can create and effectively implement to support production of professional, independent, and high-quality local news to meet the needs of the public.”

Recommendations, “in addition to any other proposals deemed appropriate, may explore the possible creation of a new national endowment for local journalism, or the reform and expansion of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting or another appropriate institution, to make public funds a part of a multi-faceted approach to sustaining local news.”

More than a dozen top journalism advocacy groups signed on in support of the legislation before news of it became widely public, including PEN America and the Society of Professional Journalists. Locally, the Colorado Media Project signed on in support, according to Bennet’s office.

To read the bill is to take a ride across the rubble of our nation’s local news landscape. Its authors note how rural areas have been hit particularly hard, and they explain the damage that disappearing local news does to democracy while citing various studies this newsletter has chronicled over the years. PEN’s Losing the News report gets a mention, as does the important work of Penny Abernathy at the University of North Carolina.

Early in the text of the bill, its authors quote Thomas Jefferson saying, “were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.’’ (The legislation doesn’t mention some perhaps lesser-known quotes of his that are more in line with what we’ve been hearing from our current president. Jefferson had a complicated relationship with the newspapers of his time.)

Lead sponsors of the bill are Bennet of Colorado, and Democratic U.S. Sens. Brian Schatz of Hawaii and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.

“Local news is foundational to our democracy, but a convergence of forces – from consolidation to social media to COVID-19 – has pushed news rooms across America to the brink,” Bennet said in a statement. He added that he worries deeply about “an America without local reporters on the beat to hold officials accountable” and who engage citizens in the events shaping their communities. “My hope,” he said, “is that this commission will — in a nonpartisan, sober, and thoughtful manner — come forward with recommendations to help reinvigorate local journalism across the country while preserving the independence vital to a free and robust press.”

Bennet, who ran for president in the Democratic primary this cycle, has some high-level familial and career connections to people in the news business. His father ran NPR in the 1980s, and his brother James was editor of The Atlantic magazine and then ran the editorial page of The New York Times where he recently tumbled out of power. Michael Bennet also worked as managing director for the private equity division of conservative Denver billionaire Phil Anschutz, who owns Clarity Media. That company’s media properties include The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colorado Politics, The Washington Examiner magazine, and the newly launched Denver Gazette.

In the past year, Colorado has become a place where public conversations about the efficacy of government support for the local news industry have been happening more than elsewhere. Despite Colorado Democratic Gov. Jared Polis throwing cold water on the idea of increased state-government support, this year, his office’s economic development agency offered for the first time ever an Advanced Industries Accelerator Grant to a local news publisher. Meanwhile, as their revenues cratered amid the pandemic, local news outlets large and small across Colorado applied for and received federal relief dollars through programs of the Small Business Administration.

While there are plenty of examples throughout U.S. history of government helping subsidize journalism in various ways, journalists are expected to remain independent of government and act as a check on official power. It is not uncommon to hear people in the journalism industry push back against calls for more public-sector support out of concern of undue influence.

Here’s a line giving voice to that in the new federal bill:

According to the Native American Journalists Association, Tribal news outlets are often dependent on Tribal governments for funding, but most Tribal news outlets lack the policy structure necessary to fully protect journalistic independence. As a result, freedoms of speech and press among Tribal nations are inconsistent, as Tribal media journalists report experiencing punitive budgetary restrictions, censorship, required prior approval of content, and workplace harassment in pursuit of Tribal reporting.

One of the tasks of this new commission, should it come into existence, would be to “consider issues of transparency and other guardrails, such as editorial independence from government actors and a distinct, independent legal and financial structure for the funding institution, which must be addressed if public funding is viewed in principle as one path forward to support production of local news.”

Speaking of federal bills, the Grand Junction paper lauded some different national legislation

Did you know there’s already a bill in Congress that, if passed, could give you a tax break of up to $250 for your local news subscriptions? The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reminded its readers this week about The Local Newspaper Sustainability Act, federal legislation proposed in July that also would offer tax relief for those who employ local journalists as well as some small businesses that advertise in local outlets.

Currently, the bipartisan bill, which brings together a strange-bedfellows coalition including Texas Republican Louie Gohmert and California Democrat Eric Swalwell, lists zero members of Colorado’s congressional delegation as co-sponsors. The Sentinel wants to change that. The newspaper’s editorial board said it hopes Colorado’s “entire delegation joins in support.”

More from the editorial:

During the pandemic, business closures and slowdowns have worsened the problem, even while readership of professional journalism has surged. And the need for such journalism — which has to play a watchdog role on the government — has never been greater. All of these things are true and relevant here at The Sentinel. The congressional act would, of course, benefit you as a subscriber, and would benefit us as journalists, and the owners and managers of the company.

The editorial also says “the chance that Congress will actually pass this act before the November elections seems remote, but we think the concept is valid, and perhaps there’s a real chance early next year.” So there’s that.

What about a nonprofit ‘replanting fund’?

Report for America President Steven Waldman has some ideas. He’s behind the initiative that includes a reporter in Colorado and became a finalist for a MacArthur “genius” grant. This week he’s out with a manifesto about how to save newspapers “squeezed by hedge funds.” (Colorado is no stranger to this problem.)

From the strategy document:

The conversation about the crisis in local news has tended to focus on two solutions: helping create local news startups and supporting local newspapers still in existence. Each approach has limitations and promise. Birthing nonprofit news organizations is critically important and valuable, but so far there are far too few (around 300), and their scale is small. Congress, on the other hand, has so far focused on helping existing newspapers as they often are the only source of information in a community. But as a long-term strategy that is misguided.

These newspapers suffer not only from broken business models but from ownership structures that make it nearly impossible for them to endure or serve their communities well. More than 1,000 newspapers today are owned by hedge funds or private equity firms, accounting for more than half of the daily newspaper circulation in the country. They cannot and will not guide newspapers to a better future. And the problems are about to get worse: The economic decline caused by COVID-19 will accelerate local newspaper bankruptcies and consolidation. This next tidal wave will swamp not only papers owned by private equity funds but also well-intentioned family-owned chains.

It’s time to ask another question: Could some of the 6,700 privately owned newspapers be transformed into more community-grounded institutions? Just as sickly plants can sometimes gain new life by being watered and repotted in healthier soil, could changing their ownership structures and sources of nourishment revive some dying newspapers?

“We need an ambitious strategy to replant for-profit newspapers into local nonprofit organizations and Public Benefit Corporations,” Waldman says. Read how that might look here.

Ski mountain owner swoops in to save a historic Colorado newspaper 

In a twist on succession-planning for small local newspaper publishers in Colorado, a historical society is turning over a newspaper to a local owner. Or, I should say, a group of local owners. And maybe this is burying the lede by now, but one of them happens to own a local ski mountain.

From The Durango Herald:

A group of locals, led by Aaron Brill, co-owner of Silverton Mountain ski area, has purchased the Silverton Standard & the Miner from the San Juan County Historical Society in an effort to keep what is the oldest continuously published newspaper on the Western Slope in operation.

“Basically, the Silverton Standard was on its way out. It is a difficult time to maintain a newspaper, and so there was a worry it was on the verge of not continuing,” Brill said.

Taking over as editor will be local teacher Megan Davenport. The Herald reported: “Silverton Mountain will have no relationship with the Standard, and Davenport will have sole control of all editorial decisions, Brill said.”

Let’s hope that remains the case. Newspapers owned by local resort-and-attraction owners have been known to publish embarrassing puff pieces about their properties. Are local historical societies better owners? They might not know journalism so well and as they fundraise from the community and the society crowd, they could potentially find themselves allergic to some of the messier parts of the newspaper business, particularly when it comes to accountability reporting.

This isn’t the first local group in recent years to pull together and take over a small community newspaper. In 2018, a group of locals bought The Trinidad Chronicle-News from a Louisiana company that owned it for the past 75 years.

Succession planning for some of our state’s smaller newspapers is something Colorado’s journalism advocates are going to have to think about. Consider this statistic from a Colorado Media Project research paper published last year: “At least 44 Colorado newspapers have owners who are approaching retirement age and may be or will be looking to sell their papers and exit the business, according to a Colorado Press Association estimate.”

As for the ski mountain owner on the Western Slope, he told The Durango Herald about the 145-year-old Silverton Standard and the Miner: “We wanted to make sure the newspaper continues. We feel that Silverton and San Juan County are in need of a community-based, local news outlet and so we basically stepped in to see if we can help to continue to run the newspaper because it appeared as if it might be going out of business.”

Steamboat paper, acknowledging white privilege, embarks on six-week DEI series 

This year, multiple newsrooms in Colorado said publicly they will work to combat racism in the wake of the police killing of another unarmed Black man in America and the waves of protests George Floyd’s death and others sparked in an already turbulent 2020.

At Colorado Public Radio, “deep introspection” is taking place in the newsroom about race and racism. Journalism support networks here have facilitated “Real Talk” sessions about race and diversity in Colorado newsrooms, and Free Press has launched an initiative in Colorado to “work alongside communities underserved by local media to help strengthen and re-imagine local news.”

And now, out on the Western Slope, the print newspaper in Steamboat Springs is embarking on a six-week series called “Indivisible” focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion in Routt County. On Tuesday, editor Lisa Schlichtman published a self-reflective first-person column introducing this important reporting project. Typically someone who is not at a loss for expressing herself — through speech, keystrokes, or printing ink — the editor found herself this year at a loss for words “and overwhelmed by feelings of ignorance, guilt and terrible sadness.”

From her piece:

And so, at the age of 55, I looked in the mirror and acknowledged my white privilege. I shut my mouth, put down my pen and began to listen and learn. I read books like “White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism” by Robin Diangelo. I listened to podcast after podcast featuring intelligent disrupters and thought leaders of color — people like Austin Channing Brown and Ibram X. Kendi. And I began following Layla Saad, Ijeoma Oluo and the hashtag #meandwhitesupremacy on Instagram.

I opened my mind to new ideas and concepts, some of which made me incredibly uncomfortable, and I came to the conclusion that I will never fully understand what it is like to be a person of color in the U.S., but that does not absolve me from the responsibility to fight against social injustice. And for me, the journey started with self-awareness and education.

Ultimately, she came to the conclusion that she “can best contribute to the cause of anti-racism through my work as a journalist and editor.” She challenged readers of the Swift Communications-owned newspaper to become part of the conversation and not to close themselves off from it, and she acknowledged the lack of diversity in her own newsroom.

“This also isn’t a topic that can be covered in just six weeks, and the Pilot & Today news team is committed to reporting on issues of diversity, equity and inclusivity beyond the conclusion of the series,” the editor wrote.

The series, which launched online Sept. 22, will publish each Wednesday until Oct. 28. Follow the project here.

LJ likes to test out new jokes on BEN

BEN actually likes watching some of LJ's performances that he puts on (when he's in the right mood for it)

LJ in turn is willing to participate in some of BEN's video games, but he doesn't always understand how to play

He's more content to watch, and be sort of like a "backseat player," if BEN's in the mood for that (because sometimes BEN's happy to just have company while he's gaming, and LJ's good for that because he's easily impressed by BEN's gaming abilities which makes him kind of stroke BEN's gaming ego a bit)

They also enjoy watching baking shows together

Um, they're best friends?? They do everything together??

They are obviously gaming buddies

They enjoy watching trashy TV together and ripping it apart

They also like to stay up late having movie marathons

And do general crackhead activities together as well, gotta have that in a best friendship

Jeff likes to dare Toby to do things, and Toby's happy to be included so he usually does them

Jeff and Toby sometimes wrestle together (sometimes it's fake and sometimes it's not)

Toby likes to tag along with Jeff and either BEN or LJ to get into some trouble together (a real headache for Slender)

🎭 Tim & Toby 🪓

Tim's taken Toby fishing one time (but it's hard for Toby to sit still for a long time, & he ends up scaring the fish... He still likes to be included though)

Tim will sometimes, if he's in a patient mood, attempt to teach Toby how to cook (more often than not, Brian will also be there to help coach Toby as well)

🪓Toby & Brian❓

Brian will sometimes read to Toby, when Toby feels like he can't sit still or focus for that long

Brian and Toby also enjoy taking walks together (and sometimes Tim or maybe even EJ will join in)

Brian also invites Toby to pluck weeds out of the garden with him, and Toby takes his de-weeding job very seriously

They, much like BEN and Jeff, are best friends who do everything together (not everything really, but just a lot of stuff)

They both like to fish, to take walks together, to read books and then swap them, and they also just like to sit and each independently do their own thing but while in the company of the other

They are also both a fan of card games

EJ likes to listen to Toby chatter away a mile a minute... he doesn't mind listening and Toby is grateful to have somebody who likes to listen to his rambling and stuttering

The two spend a lot of "quality time" together with EJ patching up Toby's various cuts and scrapes

Brian will often read to EJ

They also like to sit and enjoy each other's company while silently working on something else

🌲Slender🌲

🌲Their relationship is sort of complicated.

🌲 Slender is Hoodie’s mentor.

🌲 But also his boss.  🌲 It’s kind of a conflict of interest.  🌲 Hoodie also acknowledges that Slender took him away from his old life, but unlike Masky, Hoodie is more grateful for that.  🌲 Hoodie is thankful that Slender spared the two of them, and sees this job as a way to pay Slender back (which it is). 

🍬LJ🍬

🍬 He is not a fan of LJ. 

🍬  He never used to have a problem with clowns (they just weren’t on his radar). 

🍬 Now he does though.

🍬 It’s not that LJ does anything wrong, per se, it’s just that he can be a bit much and Hoodie doesn’t care to have that type of person hanging around him all the time. 

🍬 LJ is probably the person in the mansion that Hoodie can’t stand the most.

🧵They have a professional relationship.

🧵Hoodie handles most of the business transactions with him.

🔪  They don’t get along.  🔪 Hoodie tries to be nice, at least.  🔪 But Jeff? 

🔪 Well, nice isn’t exactly in his vocabulary. 

🔪  He doesn’t necessarily have beef with Hoodie, but he def has beef with Masky.  🔪 And since Masky and Hoodie can be practically joined at the hip sometimes, Jeff often tries to take things with Masky out on Hoodie.

🎨 They're actually friends! 

🎨One of the only friends Helen really has lol. 

🎨 They are both quiet and pensive, so they just like to sit and enjoy the silence when in each other’s company.

🎨 Hoodie is happy to sit and read or journal while Helen paints him or something else.

🧣 They’re friends!

🧣 Hoodie is one of the people in the mansion that Liu just gravitated towards, and he trusts. 

🧣 Sully even gets along with Hoodie.

🤍 They are good friends.

🤍 Admittedly, EJ’s appearance shocked Hoodie when he first arrived.

🤍 But he got over it really quickly! 

🤍 They have very similar personalities, so it’s easy to see why they get along so well.

🖤 Their friendship is mostly due to the friendship between Jane and Masky, but they’re still friends.

💄 They are surprising acquaintances. 

💄It’s really quite shocking, considering their opposite personalities. 

💄 You’d think they wouldn’t get along, but they do. For the most part. 

💄 Again, they’re acquaintances, not friends. There’s a difference. 

💄 But it’s odd that they are acquaintances at all. 

🎭Masky 🎭

🎭 They are best friends. They have a deep bond, unlike anyone else in the mansion.

🪓 Hoodie thinks of Toby like a little brother.

🪓 Yes, he can be annoying at times, but that’s his little brother. He will always be there for him, and he hopes that Toby knows this. 

🪓 He spends a lot of his time being the mediator in the arguments between Masky and Toby. 

🧸Sally🧸

🧸 Hoodie likes Sally, and thinks of her as like a little cousin. 

🧸 He is a responsible babysitter (and often picked by Slender for the job), although he doesn’t like to participate in an over-the-top fashion in her games or tea parties.

🎮 Slender views him sort of like a step-son.  

🎮 It's not HIS child, but he's still Slender's kid in his own way, if that makes sense.

Jeff’s relationships with the other pastas 💞🔪

🌲Jeff thinks of Slender like a father-figure, but will take that to his grave. 

🌲 He pushes Slender’s buttons a lot, never too far (for fear that Slender might actually kick him out), but just because he is guarding his heart, in a way. 

🌲 He knows that Slender views him like a child, and while he may act annoyed by this, he is secretly almost honored. 

🌲 Jeff is just scared to open himself up to that father-son type bond, when his own parents thought he was a disappointment. 

🍬LJ🍬

🍬 It's hit or miss.

🍬  Either they get along great, or not at all. 

🍬 It changes day to day. 

🍬 Yes, they do get into fights on particularly bad days. 

🍬 And they go right for the metaphorical jugular (although they would go for the literal jugular, had Slender not put a rule in place). 

🍬 Jeff will be all “nobody wants to be your friend, loser” “you have no purpose,” “you’re just an unwanted, unloved, rejected imaginary friend,” 

🍬 So LJ will be all “Your own parents never loved you,” “you deserved to get bullied,” “you’re unlovable because you act like an asshole,” 

🍬 While they may go for the jugular, they don’t go for the heart, so to speak. 

🍬 While the above examples may be awful, they’re not the worst things they could say.

🍬 Talking about LJ being trapped in a box, or specifically about Isaac is off the table. Talking about how Jeff killed his parents and almost killed Liu is off the table. 

🍬 Also, while not off the table completely, they usually don’t go after each other about looks. 

🍬 LJ is a 7 foot tall monochromatic clown with a striped cone-nose. Jeff is... well, he’s Jeff. Y’all know how he looks. There’s no need for them to point out each other’s appearances because they’re each aware of it and pretty evenly matched on who looks worse. 

🧵Puppeteer🧵

🧵 Surprisingly, they get along pretty well. 

🧵Then again, they don’t see each other very often. 

🧵If they lived together and saw more of each other, they probably wouldn’t get along because they have similar negative personality traits. 

🎮BEN🎮

🎮 Of course they’re best friends. 

🎮 It may seem like an odd friendship at first, but it def works out and they get along great. 

🎨Bloody Painter🎨

🎨 Not a fan of Bloody Painter. 

🎨 Jeff thinks that he has a stick up his ass that needs to be removed via Jeff’s snarky comments and general sass. 

🎨  Jeff constantly provokes him, so he’s really earned Helen’s sass. 

🧣Liu🧣

🧣 *cracks knuckles* Yeah, this is a hot mess. 

🧣 Their relationship is super complicated and there’s a lot of emotions behind it. 

🧣 They were close as kids, but things fell apart when Jeff’s mental issues became more apparent and started presenting more of a problem. 

🧣 Jeff was the kind of big brother that would tease Liu and generally be a pest. 

🧣 In a loving way, of course, and Liu knew this (even if he didn’t always remember it when Jeff was giving him a hard time). 

🧣 Jeff doesn’t remember attacking their parents or Liu. 

🧣 He only remembers the look on Liu’s face when Jeff “came to” and backed off.  

🧣 That look of terror, pain, and betrayal haunts Jeff forever. 

🧣 Jeff believed that Liu was dead for years until Liu found him.

🧣 Jeff feels horrible about what happened, but he has no idea how to make it up to Liu (if that’s even possible). 

🧣 He tries to stay out of Liu’s way, because he thinks that’s what Liu wants. 

🧣 He misses his brother though, and wishes that things were different. 

🤍EJ🤍

🤍 Jeff thinks that EJ is a cool guy sometimes, but more often than not, he’s too uptight for Jeff to hang around.

🤍  Jeff loves to let loose, and EJ seems almost incapable (in Jeff’s mind) of doing that.

🤍 They argue often, mostly because Jeff is so stubborn, opinionated, and full of himself.

🤍 EJ hates people that are full of themselves and will tell Jeff to get off his high horse. Jeff, however, loves being on his high horse.

🤍 EJ is quite the educated fellow, so he can’t help but correct someone if they say something that is wildly incorrect. Jeff usually pulls facts and stuff out of his ass, and EJ just has to say something every time or it’ll bother him forever.

🤍 (Jeff sometimes will say something incorrect on purpose, and then defend it to the death, just to get EJ riled up).

🤍 However, they both know that they can count on each other if the other one really needs help. They’re both solid like that.

🖤Jane🖤

🖤 I think this one is pretty obvious. 

🖤 Of course Jeff hates her!! (Although quite honestly, he hates her to avoid hating himself even more than he already does)

🖤 There is a whole list of reasons why.

🖤  1) She was a victim that got away,                                                          

🖤 2) She actually injured him pretty badly on that night,                                  

🖤 3) She hates his guts and reminds him of that every chance she gets,    

🖤 4) She actively hunted him down and wanted to kill him for years,          

🖤 5) She reminds him of what he has become, and it stirs up a lot of conflicting emotions within him,                                                                        

🖤 6) She has never apologized for attacking him (not that he has ever apologized for attacking her, though he did once say sorry about her parents), 

🖤 7) If not for the forced truce put in place by Slender, she would be trying to kill him to this day!

⏰ She hates him on Jane’s behalf

⏰ He only hates her in retaliation for hating him in the first place

⏰  If not for that, the two of them would probably be good friends. 

⏰ But that will never happen. 

💄Nina💄

💄Another pretty complex relationship. 

💄Like, on one hand, he’s flattered. 

💄 Really, it just boosts his ego, which is already too high for his own good most of the time. 

💄On the other hand, Nina is a lot to handle. 

💄 And honestly? He just doesn’t see her in that way. 

💄 She’s just too much, and he isn’t equipped to deal with all that mess. 

💄He doesn’t want to be tied down to anyone, especially not Nina. 

💄Tbh, he does think it’s kind of creepy how stalkerish she is. And that’s something coming from Jeff. 

💄He’s not mean to her (surprisingly) but he does tend to avoid her, just to stay out of the whole thing. 

❓Hoodie❓

❓Jeff and Masky are locked into quite the feud, and poor Hoodie gets dragged into it as Masky’s best friend. 

❓ Jeff will just act like a dick, tbh. It’s his way of “getting back” at Masky for whatever the last argument they had was about. 

❓Hoodie puts up with a lot of it, but Jeff knows that Hoodie has his limits which he is careful to avoid. Hoodie may seem weak in comparison with some of the other pastas, but he is actually hella strong when he is angry (kind of like the Hulk lmao). 

🎭Masky🎭

🎭 Yeah, they don’t get along.

🎭 Constant fighting, arguing, bickering, you name it. 

🎭 Like fights with LJ, fights with Masky can really go for the jugular. 

🎭 However, Jeff sort of has to refrain from this because there isn’t too much he can say about Masky’s past. 

🎭 What, he didn’t have a great childhood? Okay, join the club. Jeff had it worse, and Masky’s childhood wasn’t even that bad. 

🎭 Masky has depression and mild anxiety? Again, join the club. (Although Jeff does pick on him for this one, because Jeff does not have anxiety and while he does have mild depression, he would never let anyone else know about it). 

🎭 Masky is essentially just Slender’s servant? Yeah, so what? Everyone knows that, and it’s not even a big deal.

🎭 Smoking? Yeah, Masky knows it and owns it. That doesn’t affect him. 

🎭 The only things he can really get at Masky for is his pill problem (he’s not exactly addicted, but it is a problem. And the pill issue is different than smoking cigarettes because Masky is ashamed of this one), and his physical appearance. 

🎭  Insulting Masky’s appearance has more of an effect on Masky than Jeff even realizes (poor Masky has self-esteem issues, though you’d never know it), especially comments about his weight.

🪓Toby🪓

🪓 They’re friends, but barely.

🪓 Jeff loves to be mean to Toby.

🪓 Their ‘friendship’ is really only held together by the fact that Toby desperately wants friends. 

🪓 Jeff has no chill (obviously) and makes fun of Toby for his tics and scar, which really hurt him. 

🪓 Jeff would never, ever, bring up Lyra though. Even he knows that you do not bring that up. He doesn’t even bring up Toby’s dad, either, because he knows that that would hurt Toby a lot (although it isn’t off the table if the two of them were ever to get in a really big fight). 

🪓 Toby tries to let most things Jeff says roll off his back, but they do fight a lot when Toby decides that Jeff has gone too far. 

🪓 There are times though, when Jeff is in a good mood, that the two of them actually do have fun together. 

🧸Sally🧸

🧸Jeff considers her as like that annoying little cousin who follows you around at a family party and asks if you have any games on your phone. 

🧸He doesn’t really like kids too much, because he has no idea what to do with one.   

🧸 Sometimes he can be rude to Sally, when he is in a really bad mood. 

🧸 He tries to make it up to her in some small way afterward. 

🧸 And if anyone was to ever try to hurt her, Jeff would be the first to throw hands.

Fine with Current Life

Sally - she’s happy with her (after)life because she gets to have a loving family and she’s always well taken care of. She still has the mentality of a child and so as long as they’re able to shelter her from the hardships of the world and provide a safe home for her, she’ll be happy. (She also doesn’t remember her actual life, so it’s not like she knows anything different). 

BEN - he’s pretty happy with his (after)life. He doesn’t have to endure any abuse or bullying anymore, he gets to spend most of his days doing the things he enjoys most (gaming), and he lives in a nice house where food is plentiful (including generous amounts of junk food) and the inhabitants have mostly become good friends. He is grateful that he is not expected to contribute to the household outside of doing chores, and that he has a safe space to stay. He also finds using his ghostly powers to be very convenient. Of course, he also has his moments where he wishes that he could be alive and have a normal live, but he typically just occupies himself with doing something else so he won’t have to think about that anymore.  

Slender - he sometimes thinks about how life would much better and easier if he could interact safely with the human world and not have to worry about the safety of himself, his family, or his species. But he has accepted that humans will never allow his kind into their own spaces, and humans would only ever react to them out of fear or anger. He’s not angry or bitter about it, he just sees it as a fact of life. Besides, he’s got his wonderful adoptive daughter, a nice house, and plenty of people to occupy his home that he considers dear to him. He makes good money (through using his proxies to carry out ‘business deals’), he has plenty of food (his forest is plentiful), and he is safe in his mansion. That’s all he really needs after all.  

Helen - his childhood and adolescence really did a number on him in terms of trauma. He lacks the social skills or patience for dealing with “regular” people on a daily basis, and he honestly prefers his own company rather than the company of others. It doesn’t bother him living a life outside of the norm, as long as he can have his own space and privacy, then he’s all set.  

Clockwork -  like Helen, she grew up being heavily abused, isolated, and traumatized to the point where that’s all she knew. As a result, she lacks social skills and trust in people, so she would prefer not to have to interact with the outside world if she can help it. Her one regret about her new life, and this is only sometimes, is the clock in her eye. Some days she thinks it’s cool and other days she despises that it makes her look so different. 

Nina - she wishes for her old life back, but at the same time she knows that’s impossible and she’s satisfied with her new life anyway. Her new life is fun and exciting, which is what she wanted for her future, so missing her old life isn’t as big of a problem as it could be. 

Jeff - he goes through periods of time where he loves living this new lifestyle, and then he’ll go through periods of time where he loathes it. It switches frequently, but for the most part he’s okay with living an, shall we say, “unconventional” life. 

Puppeteer - he is neither happy with his current (after)life nor does he wish to live a different one. He just simply exists. 

Hoodie/Brian - he does miss the comforts and conveniences of a normal life, as well as having a normal job. But at the same time, he doesn’t find his new life to be all that bad. He figures that it could be a lot worse, and he should count his blessings that Slender needed new proxies. Otherwise, he would have been dead. He also feels that Slender is a pretty fair boss, considering he’s an eldritch being that spared his life in exchange for his servitude and work as essentially a hit man. He could have had plenty of worse bosses in the real world, so he sort of considers himself lucky. 

LJ - he has never known what a normal life is like, and he is actually very curious. He would love to be a normal human person, even just for one day. He wants the experience that he never had, and he feels that being able to interact with normal people every day would actually work wonders for his fears of being abandoned/isolated again. He wouldn’t have to be lonely, not if he could be in the company of the whole world. (He’d also like to experience certain aspects of life that he hasn’t been able to, like driving a car, having his own house, having a romantic relationship, getting some actual therapy, etc).

Liu (ft Sully) - poor boy never asked for any of this. He just wants his old life back. Yeah his parents sucked (they were abusive to Jeff, not Liu, but that doesn’t mean they were good parents to Liu), but Liu always felt that he could just keep the peace until he became old enough to leave home with Jeff. He always could trust his big brother, and he relied on him for support with their home life just as Jeff relied on him during the aftermath of any abuse for support. They were supposed to be brothers that stuck together and always had each other’s backs. It breaks Liu’s heart to know that he will never get to have the relationship he once had with Jeff, and they’ll never be able to live a normal life together. Liu obviously wishes that he didn’t have to go through his traumatizing near-death experience, and he wishes that his DID never developed as he feels that both of these things (along with all his scars) will prohibit him from having a normal life. Sully on the other hand, doesn’t mind his own existence, and he doesn’t care about having a normal life. He just wants to get even with Jeff for what he did to Liu, and for taking away their choice to have a normal life.  

Masky/Tim  - oh, he definitely wishes for a normal life. He had plans for his life after college, but now that’s all gone to the wayside. He regrets ever trespassing in the woods, and he hates having to be a proxy. He wishes he could take it all back, but he knows he can’t. 

Toby - he has always wanted a normal life, ever since he was a little boy. He was always told by both the bullies at school and his own father that his disorders and even just his own personality would prevent him from ever being properly loved by someone or from having a normal life. It’s ironic in a sad way, that had he continued down his usual path, ignored all the bullies and his father, he would have grown into an adult who would be able to have a normal life in spite of his disorders. He would have found somebody to love all of him, and he would have been able to figure out how to properly manage in a world that often doesn’t understand him. Unfortunately, ever since the “incident,” he’s been a proxy for an eldritch being which pretty much kills his chances of enjoying a normal life. 

Jane - she wishes everyday that she had her parents and her old life back. She was close with her family, she had plans for her future, she had things she wanted to do, but now it’s all ruined. She also hates the way she looks now, which only adds to her wish for normalcy. 

EJ - this is the poor guy that suffered the worst. He did not ask for this in the least, but now he is forced to live his life as this.. creature. He hates the way he looks, he hates the things he does, he hates not being a normal human person anymore. He wishes everyday that there would be a cure or reversal to the transformation, so he could actually be able to go out and have a normal life again. Alas, there has been no such thing (Slender is still looking, although EJ’s given up hope)

Today I feel like reading something sad. Could you please write some little angst headcanons about the creeps? Thank you bby!

i decided to go with nightmares as my subject of choice, I didn’t do all of the creeps but I did do the major ones, I hope you like it & it’s angsty enough for you <3 

also a brief warning that it get a little bit intense? maybe? not too sure about it, but better to be prepared than not!

🍬 LJ’s most common nightmare is being trapped in his box and never being allowed to leave. In his dreams, Isaac is there, taunting him about what a horrible friend he is and how he deserves this fate of being locked away forever in a box. The box continues to shrink, smaller and smaller, until LJ can barely breathe at all and he feels like he’s being suffocated. 

🤍 EJ frequently has nightmares that feature his lack of control over his monstrous tendencies. In his dreams, he is forced to watch as a version of himself tears into an innocent person, usually a fellow member of the mansion whom he has a good relationship with, despite their cries and pleas for him to stop. It’s graphic and terrible and EJ wakes up sobbing (although he can’t cry real tears, the feelings behind the sob are still there, it’s a sob without tears) every time it happens. It’s even worse because EJ fears that one day this nightmare could become reality, if he loses control of himself and hurts/kills somebody he cares about. 

🎮 BEN often has nightmares about drowning again. It’s a simple nightmare, but it frightens him every time. Most of the time, he drowns as other members of the mansion watch and laugh and tell him that he deserves this. Because BEN already experienced drowning before, the dream is “enhanced” by his traumatic memories of the event from his actual life. This means that in his dreams, he feels the way he felt during his actual drowning. 

🔪 Jeff gets nightmares a lot, but the nightmare he gets most often is pretty tame. He’s running from something, but he can’t quite outrun it. It’s catching up to him, and he knows that if it catches him, he’s done for. Now, this nightmare is certainly not a fun one to have, but Jeff much prefers having this nightmare over the ones that actually scare him. The two actually scary nightmares he has are when he watches a version of himself actually kill Liu (quite brutally) or a dream in which Liu kills him, whilst claiming that he deserves this fate and so much more. 

🖤 Jane’s worst nightmare involves her running into her childhood home, hugging her parents tightly as she cries tears of relief that they’re okay, only to look up and notice their bloody, mangled, oozing faces. In her dream, she’ll gasp and try to run away, but the zombiefied version of her parents will corner her, blame her for their deaths, and then rip her to pieces. It both breaks her heart and scares her out of her mind every time she has this dream.

⏰ Clockwork rarely dreams at all, and when she does, they’re nightmares. Her nightmares are really fragmented pieces of memory, her trauma from when she was a child. She relieves the horrific abuse she endured as a child. The only saving grace for her is, most of the time, she doesn’t remember her dreams when she wakes up. 

🎭 Tim’s nightmares mostly consist of being betrayed by Hoodie. Hoodie usually shoots him and watches him bleed to death. While he lays there dying, various people come up to him, kick him and tell him that he’s worthless/stupid/ugly/etc. These people are sometimes strangers, sometimes members of the mansion, and sometimes people from his past. 

❓Brian hardly ever has dreams or nightmares, but he does have one that he’ll get from time to time. In his dream, he is killed for refusing to become a proxy. Although, in his dream, Masky agrees to become a proxy and as his first assignment, he kills Hoodie. This dream hits home because, what if he had refused Slender’s offer to become a proxy? He would have had to be killed, of course. But would Masky have accepted if Brian did not? And would Slender have made Masky killl his own buddy? Would he have done it? These are questions that Hoodie doesn’t want the answer to. 

🪓 Toby has a recurring nightmare of the car crash that killed Lyra. He hates that one, and it’s the one he gets most often. His second most commonly occurring nightmare is when where he’s at school, being bullied. The bullying continuously gets worse and worse, with more and more people joining in, especially people who he cares about. The shame and humiliation get more intense, and the insults from the bullying crowd get more hurtful until Toby is begging from them to stop. But they don’t stop until Toby wakes up, heart pounding and tears forming in his eyes.

🪓 Not trying to be offensive, but I mean, he is a clown (who was “born” over a hundred years ago to boot) and so making fun of this stuff is what he does.

🧸Their relationship is complicated. 

🧸 His instinct is to love her, protect her, and be her best friend. That is what he was made to do. 

🧸 But because of his twisted purpose, he is afraid that he'll hurt her. 

🧸He's also scared that she'll be afraid of him or hate him, so he tries to stay away from her as much as it pains him.

🍬 He does get annoyed by LJ pretty easily. (Most people in the mansion find LJ a lot to deal with, to be perfectly honest). 

🍬 They just don’t have much in common, and all of LJ’s true interests are not interesting to BEN

🍬 He tries not to let it show, because a) he knows that LJ thinks pretty highly of him, and b) he knows how much it sucks to be told that you’re annoying for your interests.

🔪 BFFs, ofc. 

🔪 BEN tries not to let on how much his relationship with Jeff means to him. 

🔪 BEN didn’t have friends in his actual life, and he’s thrilled to have such a close friend now in his after-life. 

🔪  BEN made friendship necklaces once, but Jeff laughed so hard that BEN had to lie that it was a joke and laugh with him :( 

🔪 They’re gaming buddies, and boy is BEN glad to have a good gaming buddy.

🎨 He tries to cheer Helen up. He’s offered to be friends several times.

🧣 This is Jeff’s brother, of course he and BEN get along (at least in BEN’s mind, that’s how it works)

🧣 BEN and Sully don’t get along, but not many people get along with Sully. 

🧣 BEN just avoids Liu altogether if he knows that Sully is fronting.

🤍  BEN enjoys EJ’s company while he’s gaming.

🪓 They get along very well, with BEN being quite understanding of Toby’s tics.

🪓 Sometimes, if Toby’s tics are acting up particularly bad, BEN will start to glitch slightly, almost in response. No one knows why.

🌲Slender🌲

🌲Liu thinks of Slender as a positive male role model.

🌲 He is very glad that Slender was able to save Jeff and be there for him all these years.

🌲  He is also grateful that Slender has allowed him to stay at the mansion.

🌲Sully isn’t too fond of Slender, for two reasons. A) Slender saved Jeff and has been harboring him for years, and B) Sully doesn’t like authority (or most people, for that matter).

🌲 Sully really tries with Slender though, because he knows that Slender can toss them out easily and Sully agrees that they do not need to be out on the street again.

🍬LJ🍬

🍬 He doesn't like LJ.

🍬 Liu personally finds LJ to be annoying.

🍬 LJ also has a tendency to cause Sully to front.

🍬 And Sully really doesn’t like LJ.

🧵Puppeteer🧵

🧵 They have never met, and don’t know about the other one.

🎮BEN🎮

🎮 They are friends, but they’re not super close.

🎮 BEN is easy to get along with, and Liu likes that about him.

🎮 BEN always avoids Sully, though.

🎮 Liu does not play video games with BEN because they bring out his competitive side, also known as Sully.

🔪   Oh boy.

🔪 Their relationship is so complex.

🔪 As children, they were very close.

🔪  Once Jeff started having a hard time, mental health wise, they started to drift apart.

🔪 Neither boy knew how to handle this turn of events, and so their relationship suffered as a result.

🔪 They still loved each other though, and tried to keep their brotherly relationship going strong.

🔪 Jeff was different after his first stay in a mental hospital, mere months before The Incident.

🔪 Liu didn’t know who his brother was anymore. Jeff didn’t even know who he was.

🔪 Liu has PTSD from The Incident, obviously (Sully, and DID in general, is a coping mechanism from the body/mind).

🔪 Liu has forgiven Jeff, for the most part. Sully has not, and probably never will.

🔪 Liu wants to move on from The Incident, but he has a hard time (hence Sully).

🔪 Sully wants revenge. He hates Jeff, and plots to kill him.

🔪 Liu does not hate his brother, but he is still angry at him deep down for what he did.

🎨  They are acquaintances.

🤍 Liu and EJ are friends.

🤍 EJ can tolerate Sully, too, but he also has his own limits.

🖤 Liu is impressed by Jane.

🖤 He probably would have a crush on her if she wasn’t a lesbian (he respects Jane’s sexuality too much to have a crush on her because he knows she’s a lesbian)

🖤 Sully is even more impressed by Jane.

🖤 Jane’s the one person in the mansion who has had zero problems with Sully.

🖤 They’re two peas in a pod.

🖤 Slender keeps a close eye on the two of them, especially when Sully’s fronting.

⏰ Liu doesn’t have a problem with Clockwork, but Sully does (although not all the time, sometimes they get along very well)

⏰ It sucks whenever Sully and Clockwork get into a fight because Liu doesn’t usually have any idea of what happened, just that Clockwork is really mad at him and he feels bad about the whole thing

💄Nina💄

💄He doesn’t mind Nina, apart from the whole Jeff-crazed thing.

💄If Nina is in one of her weird moods, the whole mansion tries to keep her separate from Jane and Liu.

💄 It would cause Sully to front, and the three of them together could potentially do some damage as a Jeff-hating trio.

💄 Other than that, Liu and Nina don’t have a problem with each other and get along quite nicely for the most part.

❓Hoodie❓

❓Liu gets really along well with Hoodie.

❓ They’re good friends!

❓ They just kind of vibe together.

❓ And Hoodie knows how to handle Sully, which makes it even better.

🎭Masky🎭

🎭 Liu is sort of intimated by Masky.

🎭 It’s made worse by the fact that Masky and Sully do not get along at all.

🎭 Sully’s personality clashes badly with Masky’s personality.

🪓Toby🪓

🪓 Liu doesn’t have a problem with Toby.

🪓 It’s Sully that does.

🪓 Sully’s aggressive nature is often triggered by Toby’s tic, which is really unfortunate.

🪓 Sully also is constantly pointing out Toby’s tics and making him feel bad :(

🧸Sally🧸

🧸 He thinks that Sally’s a cute kid, and she means well.

🧸 She’s always trying to get him and Jeff to “make up”.

🧸 Sully secretly has a soft spot for Sally, but he keeps up a rough exterior so it’s hard to tell.

🧸 Liu refuses to babysit for fear of Sully surfacing and being mean to Sally.

🌲 EJ is eternally grateful for Slender’s help.  

🌲 He knows that he will forever be in Slender’s debt, so he tries hard to be useful around the house. 

🌲 Slender was the first person/being that wasn’t afraid of him, and actually tried to help him when he was at his worst.

🌲 Slender was also the one to fully explain to EJ what had happened to him, what he was, and what his new normal was going to have to look like. 

🍬LJ🍬

🍬 He doesn't really vibe with LJ. 

🍬 Their personalities, likes/dislikes, and general interests are vastly different. 

🍬 EJ is nice to LJ, but he doesn’t want to hang out with him or anything. 

🧵Puppeteer🧵

🧵 They don’t have a relationship, as far as EJ is concerned. 

🧵 Puppeteer is just not on his radar. 

🎮BEN🎮

🎮 They’re friends :) 

🎮 EJ thinks that BEN’s fun to hang out with.

🎮 But that there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. 

🎮 Hanging out with BEN too much makes EJ irritable.

🖤 She’s got one of those soothing personalities, and it helps to put him at ease. 

🖤 He is very grateful for any and help she gives him regarding his sight.

⏰ Just mutual respect and staying out of each other’s way.

💄He’s kind of curious about what she’s like. 

💄Because they’ve never actually met, though they’ve each heard plenty about the other. 

💄 EJ respects that she might be scared of him (she is) and so he won’t approach her unless she approaches him first (hasn’t happened yet, but never say never....)

❓They are really good friends! 

❓ They are alike in a lot of ways, so it’s easy to see why they get along so well. 

❓ Their friendship consists of a lot of silence, but that’s more than okay with the both of them. 

❓ They don’t need to talk to enjoy each other’s company and just vibe together.

🎭 They’re friends, and their friendship works because EJ is so similar to Hoodie (and we all know how well Hoodie and Masky get along). 

🎭 Masky does a lot of the talking, but EJ is more than happy to listen and offer some advice. EJ’s good at giving people advice.

🎭 EJ does nag at Masky about his unhealthy habits, though. EJ is still a firm belief in health and healthy habits, thanks to his med student days.

🪓 EJ and Toby are friends, and get along quite well. 

🪓 EJ is understanding of Toby’s tics, and is extremely helpful in dealing with them. 

🪓 EJ is not bothered by any of his tics either, because who is he to judge?

🧸 EJ is very afraid that Sally might be scared of him :( 

🧸 He hates that people are or may be frightened of him.

🧸 It (understandably) makes him feel like shit 

🧸He especially doesn’t want to upset a child, much less a sweet little girl like Sally who’s already been through so much

🧸He doesn’t know (or maybe chooses to ignore because of his own insecurities) that Sally is not, in fact, afraid of him.

🌲 She lost her own father, who she was close to, and she saw Slender as a way to fill that hole in her heart at first, but quickly realized he was uninterested in having a father-daughter relationship and instead wanted to keep it professional.

🍬 She doesn’t mind LJ too much. 

🍬  If she’s feeling moody, however, she does mind him quite a bit.

🧵They have never met. 

🧵 In fact, they are not even aware of the other’s existence.

🎮 She badly wants to be his friend.  

🎮 Plus, she thinks he’s kind of cute. 

🎮 BEN refuses to be her friend, because of the whole Jeff situation.

🔪 There’s a lot to unpack here. 

🔪 Obviously, she has a crush on Jeff.

🎨 However, she made the grave mistake of misgendering Helen, and he has never forgiven her for that.  🎨 He works so hard to be perceived as male!  

🎨 And he passes as male just fine, Nina thought he was a man when she first saw him. 

🎨 But, she asked somebody what the “painter guy”’s name was, and they said, “oh, that’s Helen.” 

🎨 She assumed Helen must be a masculine presenting woman, and addressed Helen in this way. 

🎨 He took extreme offense, and has never talked to her since their first meeting.

🧣 She has a love/hate relationship with Liu, in a way. 

🧣 She likes Liu a lot. He reminds her of Jeff in so many ways. 

🧣 Plus, she thinks he’s cute. Almost like a better version of Jeff. Hmmm...

🧣 She does NOT like Sully. 

🧣 It’s kind of ironic, considering that Sully’s personality is similar to Jeff’s. 

🧣 But since Sully has a deep hatred for Jeff, all of the time, they don’t get along. Sully also lashes out at Nina for her crush on Jeff, which she does not appreciate in the slightest.

🤍 They don’t have a relationship.

🤍 They’ve never even properly met, but Nina has seen him before. 

🤍 He terrifies her, tbh. She avoids him at all costs, and so far has managed not to run into him.

🖤 They’re roommates! (At least, part time). 

🖤 It was VERY generous of Jane to let Nina move into her apartment (even if it’s only a part-time thing).

🖤 That’s the big issue in moving forward from an acquaintanceship/roommate situation into an actual friendship between the two.
