✿ 馒头 | Mantou ・饅頭(マントウ)。小麦粉に酵母を加えて発酵させた後、蒸して作る中国のパン。日本の饅頭のルーツとも言われている。中国の饅頭は蒸しパンでありながら、デザートではなく、中国の華北に住んでいる人の「主食」として食べられている。 テン中国語の饅頭という言葉は、元々日本と同じ「蒸しパン全般」のこと指していたが、現在の中国では特に「餡や具の無い蒸しパン」を指す。餡や具のあるもの、日本で中華まんと呼ばれているものは「包子」と呼ばれる。 ・歴史的には、中に餡や具が入っていたが、現在は中には何も入っていないのが普通で、これに対して中に餡や具が入っているものは包子（パオズ）、塩で味付けされたものは花卷と呼ばれるようになり、区別される。 ・華北や東北地方一帯は寒冷地で降水量がそれほど多くないため、米の栽培に適していないが、小麦の栽培には適しているため、伝統的に麺類またはマントウが主食として食べられる。上海・香港など、華中・華南で出されるマントウは、上記のものより小さく、主食ではなく軽食（点心）として食べられる。 ・三国時代に諸葛亮(孔明)が発明したと言われています。 『三国志演義』では、諸葛亮が孟獲を七回捕らえ、南蛮を鎮めた後、川を渡って死者の魂に阻まれたと伝えられています。この場面に直面した諸葛亮は非常に不安を感じたので、熟考の末に川の神に敬意を表し、悪鬼の祝福と罰を祈り、生き物を祝福しなければなりませんでした。諸葛亮は人間を犠牲にすることに耐えられませんでした。頭が悪いので、代わりに饅頭を発明しました。そこで彼は、羊と豚を殺し、生地に包み、供え物として水の中に投げ込むように命じました。その後、人々はこの習慣を実践しました。これが「饅頭」の起源と思われます。

It has aliases such as 紫花菜[Murasakihanana], 大紫羅欄花[Ooaraseitō], etc. 紫[Murasaki] means purple, 花[Hana] means flower, 大[Oo] means large and 紫羅欄花[Araseitō] means Garden stock, Matthiola incana.

Native to China. It was introduced in the late 19th century, has become wild and spread throughout the country today. The flowers are about 3 centimeters in diameter and the grass is about 50 to 60 centimeters tall. It often grows in clusters.

It is said that Zhuge Liang had it grown as a military food, hence the name. He is called 諸葛孔明[Shokatsu Kōmei] or 孔明 and is a popular figure in our country. “Avoiding visuals that causes disconnect with the viewers”

I once said that I assumed that stereotypes about various historical characters are constantly perpetuated because of fear of backlash from viewers, and today my guess was (somewhat) validated by an interview with a staff member from SEGA in regards to the character designs of their game Eiketsu Taisen 英傑大戦 (War of Heroes)

The article is from two months ago, but I just only saw it.

The staff member said, in regards to Zhuge Kongming (Zhuge Liang):

この後ろのくるっと巻かれている冠と、羽扇が諸葛亮孔明らしさを出すポイントになっています。

なので、無理に奇をてらいすぎて「諸葛亮に見えない」と言われないように注意しています。

“The iconic hat and feathered fan are elements that are instantly recognisable as embodying Zhuge Liang Kongming. As such we avoided creating eccentric designs and cause the users to say [This does not look like Zhuge Liang].” 

I imagine other production teams are thinking along the same way with Nobunaga, or Hideyoshi, or other Sengoku figures. The new historical research results often produced information that completely turns upside down the long-held mental image and belief the average Japanese people have about those figures. 

Utilising the most up to date and accurate historical research risks turning away the average audience who might not be aware of those new updates. Updating the general public’s perception is not impossible to do. It’s just that convincing the relevant people to be willing to take the risk is not easy.

I mean, take Nobunaga himself. For a while the “evil/cruel/terrifying Nobunaga” imagery was so prevalent, and multiple fiction works cast him as the villain. Sometimes, even if he’s not evil per se in the narrative, everyone’s still scared of him. Now mainstream works tend to depict him as a heroic and respected figure rather than a villain or antagonist. Though macabre imagery are still often attached on Nobunaga, the narrative does not present that as evil, or depict everyone being constantly terrified of Nobunaga

I've said a few times here that I tire of the same tropes being constantly bandied about, but I suppose the repetitive tropes will not stop unless the project has a sponsor or donor that is willing accept losses. SEGA is what I would say a large company, with a net worth of millions or even billions of dollars, but they’re still not willing to make risky design choices for fear of losing customers.

I suppose I’m glad enough for any baby steps taken. I recalled seeing in this year’s new releases, Legend and Dousuru Ieyasu, the director has maintained the tatehiza (kneeling) sitting pose for the women that Kirin ga Kuru revolutionised. Despite the audience freaking out back during Kirin’s airing, the staff apparently determined that this is a historically accurate concept that needs to be propagated. Here’s to hoping more people are daring enough to make other breakthroughs.
