💖 Ace/Aro Dustin Headcannon 💖

In response to this ask on @nancysglock page. Just wanted to share some thoughts (decided to make my own post for etiquette once I realized how long it had gotten) on this because I love Dustin/Gaten. Also check out this very sincere response by @untitled-byler-blog (hoping I can help put to words why it exactly "feels right" at least in my pov)

I dont think Dustin being headcanoned as ace/aro has any thing to do with his disability or lack of "conventional attractiveness". He is just as charming, cute, and lovable as all the other characters!! But his relationships with others seem to be portrayed a lot differently than the rest of the characters. He actually seems to be the only main character who's story arch isn't dependent (or at least highly influenced by) their love interest/story.

And I find that especially interesting since he was quite vocal about wanting a girlfriend in S2. He went after Max, and when he couldn't get her, he tried to talk to multiple girls at the snowball dance. He wanted a girlfriend, but it didn't seem to matter who it was. He was more occupied with the idea of it than the reality and the actual feelings involved. Even Steve had to explain to him that it feels different. He takes that information and they make a note to show you he can see the spark between Lucas and Max, so he knows what it is and what it looks like. But it never feels like he, himself, gets that feeling for anyone in the show. This seems to be intentional writing.

Honestly, the most 'spark' I remember getting from him around any girl was Nancy when she danced with him. But she's more like someone he respects and looks up to. She's more of a big sister figure to him than she is to Mike. I think it falls under the assumption that he is just very respectful towards her in a way because he sees her as just another human being (albeit of the opposite gender) and is able to connect with her for who she really is and acknowledge all her good qualities. There's that same kind of respect when he interacts with Suzie (and Steve and Eddie tbh). He is constantly talking her up and saying she's smart and pretty but we don't see any build up or spark for his relationship with her. Like, everything is in the right place for a relationship to work, but it's not really shown. And even when they do talk "lovey dovey" in s3 it's very innocent and naive. As if they are going off of what they learned in a cheesy romantic movie (like The Muppet Movie or Gone with the Wind or something) rather than genuine romantic tension. Once again, more preoccupied with the idea of the relationship being romantic when it feels more like a close friendship with cutesy nicknames.

All of which is completely fine! Dustin gives the vibes of "I found an awesome girl who is pretty, smart, and funny. I enjoy talking to her and thats enough for me. That's all I want." And he goes on about the rest of the s3 and s4 plotlines without much worry about over it. He has his girlfriend, he's happy, and now he can focus on other things! His story and character arch are more revolvant around his friendships and interactions with the other characters around him.

It's interesting then, to see him paired with Steve, who is doing the same thing Dustin was doing in S2. However, the stark contrast here is that Steve in S1 is set up to be a bad boy/player type character, but he refuses to settle for just anyone so instead he evolves into more of a "clearly attracted to women but also desperately looking for the emmotional connection to go along with it". He's willing to go on multiple dates/sleep with multiple girls but can't seem to find one that he clicks with. He wants something deeper and he's running around like mad trying to find it.

A side note as well, Dustin pushing Steve towards Robin is very telling. He sees the connection between them but can't distinguish the difference between it being romantic and platonic. He almost just assumes if you get along really well with someone of the opposite gender, you should date them. Which clearly is not the case with Robin and Steve.

So I can definitely see why people identify with Dustin being aro/ace just because he interacts with people in a very unique way. (And that's good! That's why we love him so much! He literally cares so much for everyone and has so much respect for people just as they are!) But I think to discredit his character and reduce aro/ace to being just because 'you don't think he's attractive' or 'because he has a disability' is very tone deaf and offensive to people who really identify with him.

That being said, if there is actually anyone who headcanons him aro/ace because of that, you can gtfo!! Honestly, disability or not, Gaten is very attractive and his personality makes him even more so! Being ableist or just plain shallow is not welcome around here! But in my opinion most people who would hc him as such only do so because they can really see themselves in the way he views and interacts with the people around him.

Hopefully all that made sense 💖 Dustin is a big cinnamon roll and him being aro/ace is very plausible to me. I, for one, am not big on labels so I don't feel the need to fit him or anyone else into a specific box but still 100% see it. Especially when all the other characters have subplots involving tension between them and their s/o for any number of reasons where as Dustin does not. And that has nothing to do with the two things the anon mentioned.

(Also I dont want to shy away from the fact that Dustin can be disabled and/or "conventionally unattractive" and aro/ace that's very valid! 💖)

here are my thoughts on s2

first of all im gonna rate it a 7/10,i enjoyed it but there was definitely room for improvement.also s1 is superior.

i feel like i was just expecting more yk,like everyone thought it was gonna be really sad and honestly it just wasn't bc after a certain point it became repetitive.for example simon going back to Marcus when things got messed up with wille over and over again.

Marcus was definitely toxic and had shown red flags from the start but bc he seemed like the nice guy everyone ignored them.like the fact that he pressured simon into a relationship saying stuff like "i will wait for you,we will take things slow" just seemed really manipulative to me bc he knew damn well that simon was still in love with wille

I think there was too much screen time about sara and August,also for me personally i think they completely destroyed saras character making her so unlikeable and i honestly dont know how they writers will fix her relationship with simon and felice in the next season (if there is one)

The whole Alexander-august thing made absolutely no sense bc why would Alexander risk getting in serious trouble again??i dont get it

I absolutely loved how wille was treating August,it felt so relieving seeing august slowly lose everything

I love the fact that wille started seeing the therapist bc i believe he needed someone to talk to and get advice from and i hope if there is a s3 that we will see more of this character development

I think that simons character didnt have that much depth this season,he was only associated with marcus,wille and the video.i would like to see more about his relationship with his father and just in general more about his personality

I loved the ending so much i think it was the most powerful scene in the season,like wille making that statement, everyone on the royal family panicking,him and simon reassuring eachother by smiling,then the music drops and wille is staring at us breaking the 4th wall ahhhh it was so good.honestly if there is no s3 im okay with that ending knowing that simon got his closure and wilmon is fine.but im also worried about sara calling the cops which is why i believe there will be a 3rd and final season about how things turned out.

also the new wlw couple has so much potential im really hoping we will see more of them next season (when sara almost outed the girl i was so furious)

hi new anon here :) i find it somewhat frustrating with this whole tatum thing that most people who are pointing out that tatum was s1 leighton dont see how it was just poorly executed. i think they couldve easily dragged it out to s3 instead of abruptly ending it the way they did. a lot of the problem they have with the last 2 episodes could easily be fixed by dragging it out to next season. it felt as though s2 had two halves - s2A being ep 1 to 8 and then s2B being 9 & 10. it's almost like they had this plan and wrote out 1 to 8 before realising "ah shit, we have 2 eps left" and crammed everything in there. that or they feared they wouldnt be renewed and just shoved everything in so they could secure one.

they spent so much time building tatum and jackson only to abruptly write both off either in a 5 second break up scene or in tatum's case, offscreen. and the opposite is true for kimberly/canaan. they spent so much time for jackson and whitney trying to move on that it felt like they didnt do enough to solidify kimberly/canaan's feelings? i dont know why they couldnt just try to keep jackson on first, show that kimberly started having feelings and having canaan reciprocate before pushing for the kiss. have whitney be unaware but rejected by canaan at the end and show her devastated as her cliffhanger and kimberly's be being with jackson but thinking of canaan.

the same with tatum and leighton - bringing leighton back to the women's centre and the return of alicia (preferably having leighton have bumped into ginger or tova earlier) and then have her fight with tatum blow up outside tatum's last scene or have tatum say something 10x worse and leighton realising its not tatum she wants to be with and its alicia. and even if they wanted to write tatum off, couldnt they wait before putting alicia and leighton back together? show them wanting it but not immediately so they actually end up talking about what happened in s1.

it is such a shame because i feel like they couldve easily fixed this and have a much better coherent season with better response had they just made certain tweaks like showing leighton missing the women's centre, planting the kimberly/canaan more and more obviously etc. i love the show and i really dont mind how the relationships pan out (i just love the main 4 fully), but they failed at what they tried to do. unless all they wanted was how outraged almost everyone has become.

Hey Anon! I've said most of what I wanted about the TSLOCG finale but I welcome others' thoughts so no worries.

And you've pretty much summed up so much of what I also thought about the last two episodes. I guess you could "justify" Leighton's speedrun by saying that a season 3 wasn't guaranteed and they wanted to wrap up at least one of the main four's arcs neatly, but that would sound like such a lame excuse to me. Like you say, what makes this extra frustrating is that the Leightum breakup and Leighton's general development didn't need much to have landed much better. Literally if only they didn't write eps 9 and 10 in such a way that feels so disconnected from the rest of the season. Mainly for Leighton, but to a degree for Kim and Whitney too. That "oh shit we only have two eps" feeling is the exact one I also got from watching the finale.

God, I just really don't see why we didn't get anything from the women's center or from Leighton's social justice development before episode 9. And I don't see the logic behind how Tatum was written if that's what they were going for all along. Just does not land. And I vibe with your (second to) last paragraph so much as well because I still do love this show and these girls, and I don't much mind the relationships atm. I just want Leighton to be happy so be that with Alicia ig and I don't inherently have a problem with Canaan and Whitney, it just feels like it was only for the sake of love triangle drama. And since fixing it would have seemingly been so easy, it is frustrating. Obviously it's easy for us to be smarter than the writers now that we're seeing the finished product but I'm sorry, if I was a professional screenwriter getting paid to craft stories and characters I simply would want to make sure huge character moments have weight behind them. Rip to them I guess haha. I am a bit bummed to represent the outraged camp, trust me I'd rather I didn't have to, but I think it's important to emphasize that the show is still good and more than deserving of a season 3. I'm still holding the show to high standards moving forward, I'm mostly just outraged that I couldn't be as proud of Leighton in episode 10 as I should have been because I felt cheated out of an actual arc.

kipo s3 was cowardly and here’s why

i just saw someone say "it's good they didn't cure the demutagen'd mutes in the finale because it shows they're brave enough not to undo emotional moments" and i was going to reblog it but i didn't want to be negative on op's post. op if you're reading this i respect you, but you deserve better than rad sechrist. rad sechrist does not understand us.

kipo s3 criticism ahead!

tl;dr: kipo s1 and s2 espouse themes of compassion and equality for all sentient creatures, but season 3 fails to treat the ego death of mutes with the same gravity as the ego death of humans -- nor is a comparable effort made to restore mutes to their former states. this demonstrates that on a narrative level, the writers do not consider the good of mutekind to be as important as the good of humankind, which is fundamentally a betrayal of the themes established in s1 and s2.

so, in response to "it's good they didn't restore sentience to the demutagen'd mutes because it shows they’re brave enough not to undo the emotional moments": i completely disagree

they did "undo" the emotional moment. yumyan's predicament was ultimately unearned. why did he come with them? to be cannon fodder? it would have made more sense to bring scarlemagne -- he has a personal grudge against emilia, and the stakes would have been higher, and maybe kipo could have taken a demutagen dart for him and it would have been a good sibling bonding moment

but back to what actually happened.

yumyan's transformation is quickly treated like a joke so the village can hunt him down and radicles sechrist can shoehorn in an ad-libbed bug joke by dave's VA (which is an unfortunately apt example of the overall narrative planning devoted to season 3) and while Bill got that dramatic line about dying stars, the emotional sincerity is immediately undercut for laughs so Leon can vainly try to bully his dead brother into a sweater. like he doesn't understand what just happened, for some reason. as if wolf mutes who pride themselves on being EVOLVED don't understand what it would mean, philosophically, for one of them to be UNEVOLVED

this take chills me to the bone because season 3 is actually terrified of emotional sincerity. every "emotional" moment is a cheap, unearned "gotcha" moment -- song and lio crying by scarlemagne's side as he dies in an exhaustingly overdone "death = redemption" moment we all thought was subverted in the season 2 finale? when scarlemagne has been imprisoned in a convenient glass cage for months (and don't even get me STARTED on how badly that must be retraumatizing him, but dont worry about that), and outright tells kipo that she is the only one who visits him? (read: SONG AND LIO DON'T VISIT HIM)

"oh our family is back together" WHAT family!! what are you talking about, song!! scarlemagne acted as your monkey interpreter and then you ghosted him as soon as you didn't need him any more! how is this "emotional moment" satisfying, or sincere? it's a cheap attempt to invoke our pathos that they didn't even bother setting up. yea i did cry but it wasnt because radicles sechrist SUCCEEDED here, it was because he failed his characters so utterly and i was so angry that i wanted to kill him!!!

brave??? season 3 was so rife with predictably bad writing and tropey nonsense that the task of calling a more cowardly narrative to mind escapes me!

as for NOT curing the mutes, we have evidence that lio and song ARE capable of creating mutes from old world animals (exhibit A: scarlemagne). for SOME reason rad sechrist said on instagram that "a cure for the demutagen was never possible" which makes me absolutely crazy, scarlemagne is RIGHT THERE. they could only make the demutagen in the first place because they reverse engineered it after their work on scarlemagne.

i would be slightly less annoyed by this if rad gave a sensible reason that it couldn't be done, but it seems like he literally just forgot? the fact that they didn't even consider HOW it might be done demonstrates they didnt even consider DOING IT, which is ridiculous, because mutes and humans are supposed to be equally worthwhile and valuable forms of life, right? WHY CANT WE ALL RULE, asks kipo of kipo s1.

yet in s3 it is IMPERATIVE to cure emilia from her self-inflicted mega mute mistake, even though a new consciousness has formed? an innocent, scared, giant walrus thing? doesn't that thing deserve to live?? no, and one might make the case that emilia was there first so she is the one who deserves to be restored. but that's not the reason kipo gives -- it's that "no one deserves to lose themselves like that"

but the SHOW doesn't even believe this! because curing the mutes was patently possible, but they didn't even CONSIDER it! oh my god!!

like, the issue is a complex one -- ego death usually is! for example: would the re-mutagen'd mutes remember their former lives, after having their lived experiences squished down to fit in an animal brain? i think their memories might be hazy, kind of like memories of early childhood, but still a little bit there. they'd still be different people, but isn't that worth something?

take it this way: if a mad scientist turned me into a Capuchin monkey, and my friend's parents were reformed mad scientists who knew how to turn Capuchin monkeys into people -- i HOPE that they would go to the effort of turning me back into a human person, even if it's an amnesiac one! instead of... you know... keeping me around as a pet??? that's ABSOLUTELY HORRIFYING.

-"you certainly are your fathers daughter" this quote is doubly ironic and foreshadowy bc theyre referencing carson here as being a useful hudson attaché but nancy is playing everett just like ryan played celia about putting his house up (but TRIPLY ironic bc carson pulls off the long con of hiding nancy from the hudsons right under their noses this whole time!) the one time nancy is successful against them

-that bess/lisbeth look while lisbeth does something badass (+diana reassessing now that lisbeth has been revealed to be useful)

-"almost as fun as a real fight" why do i believe him? lmaoooo a bit weird that he would enjoy a fight w a partner, but i also think this is an acknowledgement of nancy being an "opponent" who exists at his level. but i also love the "let me take you out" as a direct mirror of her relationship with nick, where she avoids the public acknowledgment/"going out" but prefers the more subtle/hidden arrangements of staying in. but as shown with later eps, owen is way more capable of meeting nancy where shes at, which is so important to her + the only way of getting close to nancy. (the only foil is ace who somehow is able to do both)

-"not always about a guy" <---- this could have been such a powerful statement if the show had thought having nancy end up alone/choose herself instead of pitting her between love interests (nick, owen, gil, even potentially ace, in only 2 seasons) was a more worthy stance to take ; as an aro/ace person i cant tell you how much i would kill to see just one female protag choose herself over a man. and its more realistic to end up alone than have a happy ending anyway, for all that these shows try to be as "real" and gritty grimdark as possible

-"is that what you want?" this is an interesting question to his mother- like maybe he senses her unhappiness? combined with his issues with his father- still trying to look out for his mom? either way it's sweet. (it could also potentially work as foreshadowing of something happening to her, but i think that was played with but then diverted when it was revealed who really killed her) "i think its time i steer this ship" still kind of patriarchal tho. i get that its him coming into his own as a dad technically but still. i also like how he calls her "mother" and not mom

-parent politics: "you are taking your life in your hands / no, i'm putting it in yours" vs "i know well enough not to get involved when hes in play" both carson and ryan try to dissuade nancy from pursuing her pulling this con on everett but go about it different ways: carson is wildly concerned with nancys physical wellbeing but ryan appears to be leaning more towards weighing the odds for her/ like a "you cant win so cut your losses/dont try" scenario which interestingly might have more weight with nancy; its easy for her to brush aside carson's worrying like second nature but nancy has been established to be a determined winner, and ryan speaks to her here like shes a beginners luck prodigy at a blackjack table by encouraging her to keep her record clean by not dealing in this next round. of course she herself admits shes incapable of not dealing in ie "you know me better than that" but i have lots more thoughts on how effective ryans approaches to nancy can be sometimes (saving for the reveal ep 🙏🏻)

So much of RNM's problems are rooted in the fact that CAM doesn't believe in character backstory. When the pilot was picked up, was anything else even written yet? If Michael takes the blame for a triple murder, why does Max tell him he's never done anything for anyone? Alex's entire s1 arc culminated in him admitting to wanting to enlist because he wanted to win battles only for 2x05 to confuse us and imply something else? I don't know how much can be fixed in s3, but I want them to try.

like i said previously re: criticism of carina, i dont think she’s ABOVE criticism by any means but i do think that fandom is overly critical of her without giving due to the fact that malex and indeed the show itself wouldnt exist without her soo disclaimer disclaimer etc

pilots are often (almost always) conceptualized, written, and filmed without any guarantee that they will be greenlit for even one full season. there’s a trope called Early Installment Weirdness for a reason, so I warmly encourage all to pick and choose what they want to carry forward from any given show pilot, because by the nature of TV production it’s probably been created before everything was fully fleshed out. imo RNM’s pilot is actually pretty amazing, pilot-wise. there are some real stinkers out there for just this reason 😂

yup, yup, 2x05 flashback drives me bananas, how and why is alex so completely casual and not worried about anything but michael dropping out and “wasting his life” with michael’s hand still in bandages lol what is going ON. a lot of the fanon about what brought alex to enlist came from the one line in 1x08 (”i wanted to make music, you sent me to war!”) that was always vague and subject to jossing, but generally when fanon gets jossed like that fandom’s given some canon info to replace it with? and we literally know less about alex’s enlistment than we did after season 1 now lol and not in a “there’s a mystery here” way but in a “did they even think” way

i’m also insane over SO much of the friggin plot and conflict being driven by the manes family but there being no canon birth order for the brothers AAAAAAAAAAAA

yeah im a firm believe that in broad strokes backstory is important long before it’s strictly relevant to immediate on-screen events but rnm disagrees with me i think lol whoops

i do think season 3 can be better. the thing about rnm is if it was JUST badly written i wouldn’t care so much. but it isn’t. there’s a lot of seriously good stuff here, so much potential and raw material and i’m just! i’m rooting for them!

O K A Y.

I’ve been looking for an excuse to pull all of this together so here we go! NO Anon, I do not think that Chief James Hopper has gone and died on us. There’s no REAL evidence (there are easter eggs though) however and the Duffer Brothers could still pull the rug out from under us but hey.

No I do not believe that Hopper is dead. Although some things can be interpreted as pretty final and if the Duffers really kill him off I will never watch this show again, because it’s horrifically SHITTY writing and im already super tired of that this year lmao.

One - There is no body? We were never showed a body or what’s left of one? We have seen bodies for Benny, Barb, Bob and Billy (and even people who were in it for like 5 minutes). THEY EVEN PRODUCED A FAKE WILL WHEN THEY WANTED US TO THINK HE WAS DEAD. THEY AREN’T AGAINST SHOWING US BODIES!!! Which brings me to my next point!

Two - They also aren’t against to showing us death. Lots of gory detailing death, WHOEVER it is. Billy died horrifically but you saw it even though hes a kid. Bob got ripped to shreds.  And even those dudes at the beginning of S3 died horribly? They still showed it. Hopper’s death??? It cuts away. You see NOTHING. AT. ALL. There aren’t even any remnants OF a body where he was standing, and Joyce goes down there and LOOKS. Surely shed find something? Gooey grossness like the bodies at the beginning? Nope. You could argue that they’d be against showing us the death of a beloved hero and a main character but. Again. Bob was beloved and arguably one of the sweetest characters in the show and he was ripped to bits in front of us and Joyce. Billy was a kid for all intents and purposes, still he died a horrible death. Not one bit of that was cut away.

Three - If you look in the shots hes not on the platform when the thing explodes????? like at all? Either that’s badly shot or its done deliberately because he’s just not there anymore? There’s the portal to the Upside Down and you can see a ladder in the shot too, so maybe he either went into the Upside Down or down the ladder and got caught by the russians?? We just don’t know.

Four - We see the devastated Eleven and the aftermath of what happened at Star Court. Then it jumps to three months later? Okay, odd that were not shown anymore of the grieving or the funeral. Then of course Eleven read the SPEECH. Think about the end of it specifically and about LEAVING THE DOOR OPEN 3 INCHES!! You can see from one of the final shots of Star Court that the gates not CLOSED. It was healing but it never fully closes. So Hopper could be in the Upside Down, or travelled through it to Russia on the other end?? Who knows. Point is, they included this line at the end for a reason. Whether the reason is that hes actually dead and they’re just being profound or that its a hint about his fate, its meaningful.

Five - During the ending the song HEROES by Peter Gabriel plays, this is the same song that was placed over them finding Wills fake body, and after all the goodbyes and the ‘speech’ where it ends with “keep the door open three inches” well. Come on.

Six - Then it cuts to Russia and you hear the “not the american” line, and Hopper was called “the American” throughout the series by that Russian baddie. Should I start waving Red Flags here or???? Then again, a lot of people are saying this could be Brenner. Okay I 100% get your logic Im with ya, and for a few days I’ve also thought it could be Brenner. But here’s the thing. Elevens powers. Brenner makes her use them to spy on a russian man in Season 1. Hinting that there’s more going on here than just super powers, kids and other dimensions. Don’t forget that in the 80s the world was in the grip of the Cold War, and things would have started reaching a boiling point for this long before 1985 when it ‘officially’ began. We were never given any answers about why Brenner was spying on this man, or even Russia. Or even if he WAS spying for the US. Nothing, it’s a throwaway scene. Or IS IT? Russians show up in Season Three somehow knowing about the Upside Down, having failed at their own attempts to open a gate in Russia. They somehow know that its Hawkins they need to be in to successfully open their gate and potentially get monsters to use, oh I don’t know, in a WAR???? How would they have known any of this information to begin with?? Oh I wonder. We were told all about Brenner being alive and out there in season two (and we were never told WHERE and this is not referenced again), but as far as I can remember Eleven has never shared this with anyone else, even though it’s completely RELEVANT information. And as far as I can remember (its been a hell of an emotional few days) I dont think were given any explanation about how the Russians knew about the Upside Down, Hawkins or anything. So maybe the reason they knew is BECAUSE BRENNER is the one giving them their directives? Because hes worked for THEM this whole time???

Seven -  Interestingly also Eleven lost her powers? JEEZ ISN’T THAT CONVENIENT!!! Because the first thing shed use them for is to look for Hopper even if she was told he was dead. Shed look, 100% for the man who saved her, gave her a home, loved her, worried for her, cared for her like she was his goddamn OWN. Conveniently though now SHE CANT??? Interesting.

Eight -  And now. There’s the voicemail message. In one of the episodes (my brains so fried I cant remember which one sorry) Murrays gives out his landline number, and when you call it you can hear him give a message to Joyce. You can listen to it here.  You can tell this is after season three, because why would he talk to Joyce Byers? Surely if he was trying to reach someone for information it would be Hopper?  “I have an update, its best if we speak in person" an update??? About what??? Why is he coercing with joyce???  Notice how he says “it’s not good or bad but its SOMETHING” and then says “we’ll talk about it in person” (or something like that) why would he be calling joyce with an ‘update’?????????? AND ON WHAT EXACTLY?? INTERESTING!!

Nine - Theres this interview with the cast specifically ABOUT Hopper, the death and the post credits scene. And I love David Harbour but, you cannot lie for shit my angel.

Ten - Millie has said in an interview “ Her dads gone, or so she thinks” COME ON.

Eleven - Again WE KNOW DAVID HARBOUR IS LIKE THE MARK RUFFALO OF STRANGER THINGS. And hes bad at keeping shit to himself. Hes already told us at the end of last YEAR, literally a month after they finished filming season three that the Duffers have told him the ending to the series as a whole. Why would any creator do this for a man they have effectively just fired, because his character died? Why would they tell him? They wouldn’t.

Tweleve - Again. David Harbour, bless his heart, I think its trying to give us HINTS and bread crumbs to follow. Last week he changed his instagram photo from Hopper in S1 to the number 6. Odd. Today he changed it to the number one :

Twelve continued - Basically if he changed it to an 8 next, we know hes trying to hint at Murrays voicemail message and this is a clue for Hopper. Because why else would he bother?

Thirteen - Theres also this screenshot from Cara Buonos instagram where she literally SAYS about him being in Kamchatka, and uses the Russian word for PRISON. (Of course this could just be a joke between the actors

Fourteen - Theres also the fact, which is not evidence mind you, that its incredibly shitty writing to have both the men that Joyce Byers loved/loves to die in front of her? And actually having her put the action in motion that kills the man she loves? No. I wont accept that. And weve been shown her non willingness to believe in peoples death, everyone and their mothers told her Will was dead and she was being crazy. Did she listen? No. And she got her boy back. Will she think once she has a clear head that Hoppers dead? Maybe. Which is why she asks Murray to investigate. Hence the Voicemail Message.

Fifteen - Its also incredibly shitty and hard to swallow, for Elevens sake too. I mentioned already how much she loves Hopper and finally got a true parent in him. Do you honestly think they’d put her through all of that just to lose him NOW? Like i said, its convienent how shes lost her powers at this very crucial moment.

Sixteen - DAVID. HARBOURS. BEARD. RIGHT. NOW.

And SEVENTEEN -Just in case y’all are having trouble with any of that it looks like David Harbour has let sorta slip (my god I fucking ADORE THIS MAN LET ME TELL YOU). I dont know how reliable this is mind you because its not coming from a BIG source, but HERE he hints at knowing who the American is, after telling everyone else (see the interview above ^^) that he doesnt know and he cant say anything. 

‘During an interview with David Harbour, I attempted to delicately get around the fate of Jim Hopper. One thing is clear: Hopper still has a long journey ahead of him; not just physically, but emotionally.’

SO, basically Jim Hopper has not left us, Joyce or Eleven.  And if the Duffer Brothers have done all this to screw with us, well. Im not gonna be responsible for what I do.

the first episode felt like a whole other show to me like it was trying to be a weird teen comedy instead of a supernatural mystery like it was fine but it didnt Fit and it just highlighted the ooc writing for some of the characters in this season, mostly hopper

the bad things list had more words bc i had more to say about the bad stuff but i didn’t DISLIKE this season, i liked it!!! it was just like half and half for me tho i think. its still fun to watch and i’d rewatch it if it was with friends or at a party or smth but overall those are my feelinges

merlin thots about the s5 opening episodes.......

one of my favorite things about s5 so far is how very nicely arthur and merlin have both 1. grown up and 2. grown into each other...they still give each other shit 24/7 but it’s a lot more companionable and comfortable now than it ever has been. furthermore, both of them exhibit the use of MULTIPLE braincells even at the SAME TIME. they work very well together as a team even in the heat of battle (we did see shades of this near the end of s4), despite merlin being kind of useless at physical combat when he couldn’t rely on his magic for a boost. they can have entire conversations without a word and they’re just INCREDIBLY synchronized. the whole #vibe has really gotten a level up

timeline-wise, it’s been roughly a decade since season 1. in s1 they said the purge began 20 years ago (upon arthur’s birth), and shortly after, he had a coming of age ceremony - 21′s an important number, so in season 1 arthur began as being 20 and turned 21 before the end. season 2 = 22. gap year for s2-s3 = 23. season 3 = 24. s3-s4 gap year = 25. season 4 = 26. 3 gap years betweeen s4-s5 = 27, 28, 29. season 5 = 30. i don’t know how long it was in real life between seasons 4 and 5 (definitely not three years), but i really do feel like they’ve both aged SO much and they absolutely act like people who have known each other for a decade.

gwen as queen is AMAZINGNGLSDKJGHDSLFG she’s SO PRETTY i love her SO MUCH. love that she has her own serving girl now! this is what she deserves

the round table is good too altho it looks a bit too big for that room. it’s amazing though like...FUCK uther pendragon arthur has come SO FAR

pretty sure i had a stroke during merlin’s vision of arthur’s death. the whole thing was done SO well - they go from the battlefield and arthur’s incredibly dirty face as he very realistically looks like he’s falling down and dying and then cut to a very alive and present arthur asking what’s wrong. you can really FEEL the whiplash, and also the dread settles in nice and deep, at least it does if you’re me and you’ve read spoilers, like, “only you can keep arthur safe” BUT I KNOW HE DOESN’T I KNOW HE CAN’T I KNOW HE FAILS and merlin might as well know it too because he looks ready to CRY and thru the rest of this 2-parter opening he acts like he thinks arthur may drop dead at any moment

i feel like i read somewhere once that actors don’t like to eat during a scene unless absolutely necessary because when you do 30 takes of something you get very full very quickly and some even go so far as to have a spit bucket just out of sight so that they can just get rid of it without having to eat any more. which makes it absolutely bananas to me that so often in merlin the characters are not only eating but eating very quickly as though they really have been roughing it in the wilderness all day & are absolutely famished...they don’t have to show them eating so often BUT THEY DO

arthur getting merlin into a tight spot by insisting he perform, planning on laughing at his failure? funny. merlin ACTUALLY USING MAGIC TO TEACH HIMSELF TO JUGGLE so that he could watch arthur’s jaw hit the floor? PRICELESS. i wonder how long it took him to do that, he definitely wasn’t using a body double

merlin is acting so bleak and dire in these episodes that even mr no-empathy himself asks him whats wrong, multiple times. they’re doing a VERY good job at really driving home the fact that arthur’s time is running short and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. merlin’s so sick with dread he’s making ME sick with dread. arthur’s here and being his normal dumbass self but the distance between them feels HUGE during the moments merlin is thinking about arthur’s impending doom

arthur all “i cant believe u can juggle i didnt even know you could catch” and then throwing the boots at merlin only for merlin to NOT CATCH THEM and arthur goes “see explain that” and merlin goes “wish i could” and i D I E 

because he’s KNOWN HIM FOR A DECADE and he still can’t explain the magic and at this point it must feel like to him that he never, ever will UUUUUGH it’s funny how they can feel so close to each other one second and like THIS the next i am DYING

the little conversation they have when they make camp the next night is the same. the sad music plays, merlin keeps looking at arthur like it might be the last time he sees him, and arthur keeps insisting on asking merlin what’s wrong and trying to make him feel better...they’re really for real friends!!! they’re so serious and grown up!!!!!

ive lost count of how many times either merlin or arthur has been nearly dead and had to get hauled around by the other one

also of how many times merlin used his magic in a way that should have been obvious to bystanders and wasn’t

“if morgana doesnt kill you i will" “threatening a king is treason merlin” “what about threatening an ASS” listen. look me in the eyes. this is TOP TIER banter

remember how in the early seasons they’d bend over backwards to leave plausible deniability when expressing affection? like “we’d be good friends if you weren’t a prince” or “you’re not wise or anything but yeah you’re wise” or whatever dumb toxic masculinity bullshit...those days are OVER with. merlin speaks DIRECTLY from the heart. “i’m worried about you” and “i swear i’ll protect you or die at your side” he is not fucking around even a little bit. this fool is in love

they were ALMOST cuddling when they slept together under that overhang

the two of them trapped in that net was PRICELESS. in the early seasons i got a little tired of the frequent slapstick/juvenile humor and wished the series was a bit more serious but now that they’re here i cling to every shred of levity with my whole heart

i was SO relieved to realize gwen wasn’t actually planning on killing that poor girl - i kept saying the entire time it was very out of character for her, no way could she be that cruel

arthur: “you wanna kill me fine but my last request is for you not to kill merlin” merlin: “you wanna kill arthur fine but you’re gonna have to go through me” arthur: “for fucks sake”

i can’t BELIEVE morgana also has a pet dragon. she and merlin could have been the BEST foils and i’m STAYING mad about it. she was actually so good in this episode - way less full of evil smirks - that i briefly rejoined the morgana defense squad and got REAL pissed when mordred eventually shanked her, ESPECIALLY after she was so happy she was nearly crying to see him again. WHAT IS IT WITH THAT KID AND STABBING PEOPLE KNOCK IT OFF

the snowy environments in this episode were soooo good. the scenery was just...top fucking tier and it’s nice to see them somewhere other than the same old places. also like NO allo but arthur looks really nice just wandering around through a bunch of fucking snowbanks with dirt all over his face

arthur and merlin’s little ploy to steal that dagger by arthur faking a collapse was SO GOOD. they’re SO IN SYNC. i was THRILLED. better still: he winked when he was done. he used like FIVE WHOLE BRAIN CELLS AT ONCE and he was ALMOST as proud of himself as i am proud of him. what a guy, that arthur pendragon

their escape was really good too. the nonverbal communication? top tier! they just give each other little looks and then proceed to wreck the whole scene. doubly funny when the slaver is like WHO SPILLED THAT STUFF and arthur just kind of jerks his head over at merlin. snitches get stitches, YOUR HIGHNESS

i barely felt one whole emotion for sefa or her dad but him dying was like. sad. this show is sad. why the fuck am i watching it. i hate character death. they were hugging

arthur seemed like he was having just the time of his LIFE sneaking into that big ol tower of doom. dude was all cute little quips and smiles. popped his head outta that lil minecart like a kid at christmas

i love also that you give percival nothing but a single sword and in short order he goes about liberating all the slaves, killing all the slavers, and then reappropriating their swords to a better cause. he’s a one-man army. i was SO impressed. and he really looked like he was having fun too

merlin seeing that lil baby dragon again was SO fucked up and sad. why can’t it TALK :(((

on a final note, though, i am less than thrilled with the knighting of mordred...how is it arthur can KNOW who he is, that he’s a druid, and can do magic, and LET HIM INTO THE KNIGHTS, and still have sorcery be outlawed in camelot?? it doesnt make any SENSE

im gonna rant about a//urance + k/ancers under the cut so just ignore me if youre not into that

i dont get how people keep saying they NEVER saw a//urance coming, and the show didnt do a good enough job building up to it, when since like season 3 k/ancers have spent half their time trying to prove a//urance wasnt endgame. no one did that with p/ance or h@nce because those werent canon threats. a//urance ALWAYS has been and k/ancers have been knowing that but after s7 proved them wrong they decide to turn around and say a//urance has no build up. and its so obnoxious looking back at how much people have changed their view of it over the past 2 years

s1-2 no one was worried about a//urance for a number of reasons. the fandom generally thought a//ura was older and probably going to end up with sh!ro (sidenote that bc of the way s1-2 characters were moved around from their 80s counterparts, v/d sha//ura was basically the same pairing as 80s ka//ura + whatever sven + rome//e’s ship name is, bc conceptually v/d a//ura combined 80s a//ura and rome//e- peaceful/diplomatic princess [a//ura] and also warrior princess [rome//e].and v/d sh!ro was given 80s ke!ths position and characterization). sha//ura was everyone’s assumed endgame, the obvious one, while they thought k/ance would be the surprise slowburn endgame. add in that a//urance looked like a finn/bubblegum kind of thing, younger boy with a big obvious crush on disinterested older girl, and that lance and ke!th had a lot of focus in s1. back then, i can understand why no one saw a//urance coming. but looking back, it looks just like kat@@ng, so maybe we should have known.

once s3 hit, after everyone found out a//ura was a teen and therefore sha//ura was super unlikely, people started being afraid of both a//urance and ka//ura, but mostly a//urance bc the fandom went hard against ka//ura based on s2 (and other nonsense i wont get into rn). this is when you start getting metas about why a//urance would be a terrible endgame, why k/ance has more going for it. people say lance was too rude and creepy towards her in s1-2 so it sends a bad message, they say a//ura isnt reciprocating. every moment between them is CLEARLY platonic, 100000 word essay about why every a//urance interaction leads to k/ance. but its ok bc even tho s3 had a//urance moments, it still had loads of k/ance interaction [everyone collectively forgot about every ke!th and a//ura interaction including myself].

then in s4 ke!th leaves. lance and ke!th barely interact, but we see a couple good a//urance interactions. from s4 on we start seeing a//urance scenes that resemble k/ance scenes-which ill get to later. the bit on naxzela kinda looks like the bonding moment- “are you okay?” but otherwise s4 doesnt have a whole lot. but s5 gives us more a//urance while ke!th is straight up gone and does not talk to the team at all, which further lessens the perceived ka//ura threat. lance and a//ura have the sword scene, mutual support, lance takes a//uras side on the lot*r problem. but s5 gave people hope for a lance arc related to the clone, which would have to involve ke!th as well, 1+1= k/ance.

then s6 is a big turn around. it starts with a//urance looking dead and buried, despite some positive a//urance moments, bc of lot*ra, and ends with yet another supportive and emotional a//urance scene. meanwhile there’s not really 1 good k/ance moment unless you go BEYOND subtext when looking at their interactions. and with no lot*r, a//urance is once again a possibility. BUT people held on so tight to the rebound argument, and a LM interview, that they STILL refused to see the a//urance build up. that’s why s7 fucked everyone up so much. literally willful blindness and people trying to meta their way out of a//urance build up, until the blushing happened and it was SO in your face you couldnt deny it.

thats the part that irks me. it’s not that a//urance had no build up, its that the entire fandom purposefully refused to see it and would write metas about how lances feelings for a//ura were still about ke!th. there WAS build up, and it was consistent, and it makes sense. if you think the s1-3 k/ance friendship building was good romantic development, you have to acknowledge that the s3-7 a//urance friendship building was too.

and look, i get it. everyone has been clinging to k/ance since before a//urance even looked possible bc v/d has shitty inconsistent writing. you dont have to like a//urance, god knows i have nitpicky things with it, but saying it has no buildup is flat out lying. you can be mad that a//urance and k/ance have similar scenes while only a//urance is romantic. you can be mad about k/ance baiting in the marketing (which isnt done by the writers or showrunners and therefore isnt their fault). you can like k/ance better for whatever your reasons are, ive never been discrete about it being my preferred ship, but taking that out on the ship itself is rude to people who DO like the ship, because it has development and is probably canon, and is also just stupid. its willful ignorance.

i have issues with the way certain a//urance things are framed, but that goes down to the v/d writers being shit at their jobs, and if you have half a brain you could tell that the same problems would plague k/ance if thats what they had written. a//urance isnt any better or worse than the rest of vo/tron. the whole show is shit and it drags what would have been good pairings down with it. i’m probably forgetting important things in this rant but im so tired. and annoyed. and i wish k/ancers had never created this weird subculture, as much as i enjoy the endless content, because it went to a very weird place. i think 90% of k/ancers ended up being part of it or bought into it just bc mob mentality and s7 was the breaking point. just open your eyes and see what is literally Right There. keep loving or shipping k/ance but stop lying about why

Aww, don’t worry too much about it!^^ OOC isn’t necessarily bad, I’ve just had my fill for the day :’D 

But I’m absolutely ready to help if you want it. Before s3 came out I made a post series with little things I liked about the characters, so if you’re looking for random facts about him to bring him to life you can check out this post. I’m writing a little more about how I personally interpret him and his relationships with other characters under the cut :D 

(Keep in mind though that this is my personal interpretation, I’ve never actually read a lot of Shiro-centric works)

Generally, Shiro seems to have 2 different attitudes. One for his team and one for pretty much everyone else :’D

Shiro with the team is incredibly patient. He never yells. The only times where he can be considered rude or abrasive towards his team is when they are in a pinch or a time-sensitive situation, he has already made a decision and someone speaks up against him. Normally he would be the type to talk any problems out but since he doesn’t have that time he puts his foot down and makes everyone else follow him. 

Other than that we see him being dorky (although he doesn’t initiate stupid things he never hesitates to join them, like the food go fight or the laser gun sounds or the spore fight) and we see him giving out compliments whenever he deems it necessary. He is extremely attuned to everyone’s mood and when he’s near and realizes that someone isn’t feeling well he’s always the one to comfort them:

Shiro feels responsible for them. He was the one to hang back when Lance was injured and he is protective of them without being overbearing. Like, he always offers emotional comfort, but when he gets rejected and realizes that it really isn’t wanted he leaves it. He doesn’t fight anyone on needing distance, especially not when they are feeling bad. 

However, Shiro is also a very reasonable person (and, as I already mentioned, attuned to everyone’s feelings) so when he’s approaching someone they are usually prepared for it and open up to him. He doesn’t joke to diffuse a situation. Everyone knows that Shiro will take them and their concerns seriously which is why they usually feel safe enough to talk about what’s bothering them.

One of the problems Shiro has though is that he’s worried about his image. Not in the way Lance is, more in the way of that he never looses his cool in front of his team. He’s scared of who is and who he might become - you can read more on that in the middle of this post (that I wrote after s2 which is why there’s no Allura :P).

Moving on to his general relationship with different characters on the team: Keith.

Shiro and Keith are very close and, more than anything, they are equals. They don’t really tease each other. Most of their conversations are honest and relaxed and they always know when the other one is feeling bad:

They have phrases that they repeat “(it’s good to have you back”/“it’s good to be back”), they have the ‘shoulder touch of comfort’, they know how each other’s minds work (“patience yields focus”), they openly depend on each other. Yes, that goes from Shiro to Keith too - Keith said that he was the only one that never gave up on him, Shiro thinks Keith would make a good leader, Shiro opens up about feeling unsure if he’s ever gonna make it out alive at the beginning of s1. Most of their smiles don’t come from jokes but from shared memories that they’re fond of!

Pidge. Shiro is undeniably fond of her. Once again, there’s no teasing in their relationship - it’s just honesty. Pidge, who can be rather scathing at times, becomes very soft around him. She feels safe around him, probably because he respects her decisions:

He went with her to search for her brother in episode 1. He would have allowed her to leave the team if she really wanted that. Shiro has confidence in her - “go, be great!” - and he never hesitates to show it. There is no ‘this girl is 10 years younger than me, I’ve got to protect her from the world’ in his behavior, he was the one that gave her the confidence needed to first claim the green lion. Whenever she rambles he lets her talk, he’s not the one to tell her to get back on topic. 

Allura. Shiro is older than Allura, the head of Voltron, has more battle experience, has graduated from the academy - and he still addresses her as his superior. Whenever the team has to make a decision outside of battle he always leaves her the final choice. I’m not completely convinced that it has to do with rank (“Princess” vs “officer”) since he never insists that anyone amongst his friends has to address with ‘sir’ as much as it has to do with respect. Allura is the one with the knowledge about the entire universe and she’s the one that gave them a purpose out here in space, so he is damn well going to respect that. 

Apart from that, he seems to get along really well with her. He comforted her on two different occasions:

I think it’s safe to say that he recognizes some of himself in her. She too bottles up her emotions, feels responsible for all of the paladins, is serious rather than funny and has a secret dorky side. She too has suffered from the hands of the Galra and got forced into something she wasn’t prepared for. But, once again, he never doubts her strength: he has no problems with her joining the team on the infiltration mission in s1.

Lance & Hunk. These two get the same category because there’s not much to say about them. Shiro has never been around when Lance has felt the need to talk about his insecurities or homesickness and Hunk has never freaked out past the point of listening with him at the helm in the middle of battle. Since both Lance and Hunk are extroverted people that talk and joke around a lot Shiro doesn’t quite click with them as much as with the others. That’s not to say that he won’t ever do it - he just needs a little more time for it. 

Despite that, he has the same general effect on Lance and Hunk as on the rest of the team: they feel safe with him around. Hunk hid behind him when they first entered the castle of lions and Lance knows that he’s allowed to keep joking around despite Shiro reprimanding him when he starts saying inappropriate stuff. Shiro compliments them when they succeed with something good - “nice job, Lance! That’s why we bring our sharpshooter” - and he doesn’t make jabs at Lance’s intelligence/Hunk’s fear of flying.

(there’s not much to say about Coran. He seems to get along with him quite well when Coran lets go of his quirky behavior for a moment. Shiro knows that Coran too has suffered a lot but keeps on fighting and he respects him for that.)

Matt. Matt addressed him with “sir” in s4 and he was shown to still wear a cadet uniform on the ‘gone missing in space’ pics in s1, so I’m not actually sure if they knew each other before the Kerberos mission. Either way he was very protective of him - enough so to take his place in the arena - and was extremely relieved when he met him again in s4:

Despite not having had a lot of appearances together, Shiro acted a little differently around him though. Directly when we first saw them on screen he joked “you guys get a little more excited about ice samples than I do” - which is teasing - and he pulled Matt into the hug:

-which can also be considered teasing. Shiro has a playful side that he allows to initiate stuff around Matt! (Part of it might be because Matt just… doesn’t seem to get angry/offended when you tease him. Not even in a fake offended way, he just laughs it off and keeps doing his thing!)

Now, his personality outside of the team. He’s a prime example of a leader when he’s meeting new people as the head of Voltron, put together and to the point. However, his fuse is a lot shorter than with his team:

Slav was driving him up the wall, when the BoM refused to cooperate and believe Keith he was ready to abort mission, the moment he met Zarkon on the Astral level he was ready to fight. In general, he has very strong morals and wants to do anything to set right the injustice in the universe, but he is a lot more patient than (for example) Keith when it comes to that. To top it all off, his will to live is extraordinarily strong too - he survived the fight in the arena. He was forced to fight against and probably kill multiple creatures/aliens.

…and yet he was willing to trust Ulaz and give the Blades a chance. Shiro doesn’t generalize, he observes and makes his decisions or goes with his gut and does whatever it takes to survive. It’s pretty clear that he’s battle-hardened and very strategic, even if he has suppressed most of his memories from his time with the Galra.

Voltron Season 2 Thoughts

After having some time to process everything that happened, I wanted to do a write up about season two!  I’ll be going over everything I liked and everything I didn’t like (justice for Hunk and Lance plz!!).  I’ll be going over each episode briefly but most of my thoughts will be about the major characters!

Obviously, major spoilers are under the cut!

Episode 1: Across the Universe

Pretty strong season opener!  I’d have to say my favorite parts are Pidge’s junk friends and Allura and Coran’s time loop.  Coran getting younger and younger and poor Allura trying to save him was really good!  Especially when she says she saw him as another father!!  I wanted to cry!  Pidge missing her friends was so painful too.  Liked the Shiro and Keith part too and Keith asking black Lion to help him save Shiro!  Very nice!

Episode 2: The Depths

Oh man I have such mixed thoughts about this episode.  I really loved the underwater world, the mermaids and all the Hance interactions, as well as Lance unlocking a new weapon.

I disliked the continuous pushing of Lance trying to flirt with every mermaid lady... like... this is something I’ll bring up again later but I feel like they really just turned him into girl chasing comic relief.  Justice for Lance tbh.

Episode 3: Shiro’s Escape

I liked seeing how Shiro escaped!!  Though FUCK the Galra /took/ his hand, I always kinda assumed he lost it in the arena or something but fsfjlekjsflsfe SHIRO.  Someone give him a hug.  Ulaz was a really interesting character and the Blade of Marmora’s methods of hiding their bases are super interesting!  The fight was really neat too and Ulaz’s sacrifice was painful too, even though we barely knew him.

I also really liked how it was Shiro that brought up that not all Galra might be evil, despite everything he went through.

Episode 4: Greening the Cube

THE SPORE FIGHT WAS ADORABLE.  I really love moments like this where the paladins all bond together and stuff!  The alien race and their planet and nature tech was really awesome too.  I really love all the aliens races in this show, tbh.  They’re great!

And ahhh Pidge bonding more with her lion was really good!  And her new weapon is really cool and will definitely be useful in the future (and it was!)  I don’t have much else to say about this episode other than I really enjoyed it and the NGE references during the fight!

Episode 5: Eye of the Storm

ALTEAN BIOLOGY LMAO.  I wanted to know more about it but NOT LIKE THIS.

The Klance moments were HILARIOUS, as well as Pidge trying to learn Altean.  Hunk’s cooking did save the day, which was nice.  I just wish later episodes didn’t just focus on this aspect of him...

Not really much else to say about this episode really other than Coran was really funny and Zarkon chasing them was really tense.

Episode 6: The Ark of Taujeer

I found Allura and Keith’s talk in the pod really interesting!  I’m all for Allura having one of one moments with the younger Paladins and getting to know them better.

The design of the alien race made me laugh ahah they look soft.  I enjoyed this episode except for one thing: Hunk’s new power activation.  I kind of have the same issue with how Lance activated his.  Compared to Pidge, there wasn’t a huge focus on connecting with their lions??  Pidge had a whole scene but their power just sorta... happened in the middle of a tense situation and not separate from the fight.  Idk it would have been nice to see them have more of a connecting moment with their lion rather than wham bam new power.

But yeah, that’s about it.  Oh, Red saving Keith and Allura from so far away was great!!

Episode 7: Space Mall

Okay, I won’t lie, all the scenes that take place in the mall had me dying of laughter.  Pidge and Lance’s quest for money, Coran sneaking around, Hunk being Gordon Ramsay (would have been nice to have less food jokes with hunk tho...), and Keith getting distracted by knives lmao.  And the mall cop was HILARIOUS.  I love seeing the younger Paladins able to act like the kids they are despite the war.

ALL THE SHIRO SCENES MADE ME WANNA SCREAM.  Though I’m really glad his connection with the Black Lion got stronger and Black saved him and severed the connection with Zarkon!

Episode 8: The Blade of Marmora

THIS ENTIRE EPISODE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, first: The base hiding spot is SUPER COOL and really pretty looking!!  The Blade is also really interesting!  I’ve been waiting SO LONG to get something about Keith’s backstory!!  So of course I was screaming the entire time ahaha.

We were all right that Keith was galra BUT we got it wrong that Thace was his father!  His father is human and his mother is Galra and I LOVE THAT???  I want to know more about her??  Who is she??

And I’m so glad with the whole “Shiro, you’re like a brother to me” line because Keith has always acted kinda distant and like he has no family but he does!  I love that so much!

Also overprotective Red Lion!!!  I love Red’s connection with Keith!!

Episode 9: The Belly of the Weblum

THIS EPISODE WAS GROSS LMAO But I still loved it because of all the Hunk and Keith interactions!!    We finally get an episode with Hunk doing great stuff...  Him distracting the worm and putting himself in danger of the laser thing was so good.  THIS IS THE KIND OF HUNK CONTENT I WANT.

Also Keith saving a Galra was interesting!  I wonder if the Galra soldier will ever come back??  I really want to know more about them tbh...  It was interesting.

But yes, more good Hunk content like this and more Keith interactions with the other Paladins!!

Episode 10: Escape from Beta Traz

I really liked this episode because as someone with severe anxiety, I relate SO HARD to Slav LMAO.  Seeing more of Pidge’s tech genius was great and finding out that Matt is okay and escaped with some rebels is great!  (Though where is her father?????)  

I WAS SO HAPPY FOR THE LANCE CONTENT but it didn’t really go anywhere...  It sort of did with Shiro acknowledging that he’s a sharp shooter but other than that, nothing much else happened with it...  I really hope we get future episodes of Lance struggling with this!!  Please give my son the arc he deserves!!

Also I want the space dog thing it’s so CUTE AND BIG!!!

Episode 11: Stayin’ Alive

Allura!!!  I love her and her interactions with the Balmerans!  AND SHAY ASKING ABOUT HUNK <3  Her fighting the Robeast with the castle until the others arrived with great too.  Also this battle gave me more NGE vibes lmao...

And then at the end of the episode we see Allura being cold toward Keith for being Galra...  Which is understandable but I really dislike how they treat her as being bad for being scared... :/

Also, THACE.  You tried, buddy...

Episode 12: Best Laid Plans

This episode was SUPER TENSE and Keith and Thace interacting was really cool too.  The fighting was really cool and we see that Zarkon is SUPER OBSESSED with the Black Lion.  We still don’t really know WHY but its interesting to see his obsession.

I’m glad Allura talks to Keith and says she was scared and considers the Paladins her new family.  So I’m glad they didn’t really drag this out too much but like... Still not that happy with this plot thread.

Thace’s sacrifice HURT.

Episode 13: Blackout

Oh man this episode... The fight with Zarkon was SO COOL and ahhhhh and Shiro screaming for Allura when she’s injured and ahhhhhh!!!  Allura being a battle princess was SO COOL.  Her fighting Haggar and the other druids was great!!  And the reveal about Haggar... ahhh I wonder who she is???  Does she have a connection to the royal family??  I’m so... ahhhhhhh lmao.

Shiro getting the bayard back and the wings on the black lion....

I don’t really know how to say everything I feel but this was a really good finale.  That cliffhanger ending... WTFFFFF SHIRO WHERE ARE YOU...

Praying for Black Paladin Allura while they search for Shiro...

Final thoughts: 

I dont like how Lance and Hunk were really sidelined in this season.  I really hope that we get lots of character growth for the two of them in season 3!!

And that Shiro won’t die... please... where is he...

Also, it’s good to know we’ll be getting LGBT rep later on!!

CHARACTER THOUGHTS:

I’ll just go over the main characters!

Coran:  I love Coran so much lmao all of his scenes were really great and it’s nice to see him doing a lot of mechanical things!

Allura:  I LOVE HER I was so ready for her fighting in the last two episodes!!  I do wish they had handled her thing about Galra Keith differently...  But I’m happy she got to shine in combat AND unlock new magic???  That was SO COOL.  Also her interactions with Shiro... my heart...  Him calming her down by softly touching her hand was so good...

Shiro:  I love him SO MUCH.  I’m so worried about him!!  His bonding with the Black Lion, his scene with Allura and touching her hand softly, all the great brotherly scene with Keith ahhh this was a good season for Shiro development!  I feel like he didn’t get much development in s1 so this was really nice to see.  BUT THAT ENDING... IS HE OKAY???

Keith:  This was such a heavy Keith season (to the detriment of other characters...) but I was really hoping we’d get answers about his past.  We did get some!  Nice to know his mom is the Galra and his father is human!  His father reminded me of Shiro so maybe they are related??  Cousins or something?  Ugh I want more answers lmao vld s3 give us more answers but don’t ignore the others!

Lance:  MY POOR BOY.  I feel like he was reduced to being aggressively heterosexual comic relief sighs.  I was hopefully when we saw him doubting himself but they really didn’t do much with it... it was over really fast and like... ughhh flesh out his self doubts more please!!

Hunk:  MY OTHER POOR BOY.  I love that Hunk is funny, don’t get me wrong, but I feel like 95% of his content this season was food jokes and talking about food.  I feel like the only ep that really let him shine somewhat was the Weblum episode.  Can we please have more content like that??  Hunk being brave??  Even when his lion got a new power, it was barely touched on, just like Lance’s was.  PLEASE GIVE THESE BOYS GOOD STORY ARCS.

Pidge:  MY TINY DAUGHTER.  I love that her tech stuff got to shine more in this season.  And I’m so glad that she found out that Matt is okay but I don’t know why they didn’t talk about her father??  Like... he’s missing too...  But I think this was a pretty good season for Pidge!

SO YEAH, those are my thoughts!  I really hope we get more character development in future seasons and that the LGBT rep we were promised comes soon lmao
