“Do you have to touch everyone?” Arthur asks, eyes narrowing on where Gwaine’s hand now rests upon Merlin’s bowed head.
“He’s been gone,” Gwaine says. “It’s nice to see him.”
Arthur scoffs. “He was collecting firewood!”
Merlin, unperturbed by Gwaine’s ruffling of his already messy hair, has already begun looking through the pile of wood at his feet for small twigs to add to the kindling.
“You’re just emotionally stunted,” Merlin quips, striking the flint and deftly starting the dry leaves alight.
“I am not!” Arthur protests.
But he flushes when Merlin’s fingers brush against his palm as he hands him his dinner. And he can’t quite understand the strange fluttering in his chest when Merlin smiles at him.
“I think I’m sick,” he tells Gaius when he returns to Camelot, and goes on to describe the strange clenching in his belly, stuttering of his heart, and heating of his face.
Merlin has the gall to laugh. Gaius raises an eyebrow.
“I’ll handle this,” Merlin tells Gaius.
Gaius shrugs and walks out of the chambers muttering under his breath.
Arthur sputters. “I am king. He can’t just walk out when I am unwell. What is the meaning of this?”
Merlin’s face is inches from Arthur’s, and all of his symptoms are flaring up, and he’s short of air. Merlin’s lips press against his in a soft chaste kiss. Oh. Oh that’s… Arthur grabs at the back of Merlin’s head, and kisses back.
When they part, Merlin whispers, “Better?”
“Cured.”
Merlin rolls his eyes. “Emotionally stunted, prat.”
“Merlin!”

Merlin is the FATHER of savagery:
“Look, I’ve told you you’re an ass. I just didn’t realize you were a royal one.”
"How long have you been training to be a prat, my lord"
Arthur: “We’re supposed to be hunting. It requires speed, strength, and an agile mind!” Merlin: "So you're able to get by on two of the three then?"
Uther: “If this were a time of war, I’d have you flogged.” Merlin: “But since it’s not we’ll let it go just this once?”
"One day you'll transform into a beautiful prince. But magic's outlawed in Camelot so that'll probably never happen."
Merlin: "She likes you?" Gaius: nods head Merlin:"Oh, that is disgusting." "Imagine...imagine if she kissed you! UGH"
Arthur: "Take some advice from someone who knows about women-” Merlin: “If such a person existed maybe I would”
Arthur: "You have the mind of a child" Merlin: "Yet I'm still more intelligent than you"
"I take it you haven't come all this way JUST TO SMASH MY FAVORITE POT"
Leon: "Whats the job, exactly?" Merlin: "To kill Arthur" Leon: "Driving you mad isn't he?" Merlin: "Not for much longer!"
Gaius: “Sometimes two heads are better than one.” Merlin: “Yes but not when one of them is yours.”
"PERCIVAL, that is a sword, it DOES hurt"
"Will it be hot? Will it be cold? Will it be wet? Will it be dry?"
Merlin: "I wouldn't do that if I were you because if you do that....you'll never learn of my plan." Arthur: "... What plan?" Merlin: "EXACTLY! That's why you can't run me through!"
"Don't think too hard, I wouldn't want you to hurt yourself"
"Are you threatening me with a SPOON?"
Morgana: "You’re just my imagination" Merlin: "That’s right. I’m not really here. Just pretend i’m not really here!"
"The belt is one hole shy of perfection!"
"Do you want us to help you?.... Or do you want to do this alOoOone"
......
...
No other character will be as iconic as Merlin :)

Remember that one scene where Arthur is training with Merlin and Merlin is fighting for his life while Arthur repeatedly knocks him on his arse? I can’t remember what episode but it was early in season 1.
I like to imagine Merlin starts being sarcastic with every hit in hopes it’ll piss Arthur off enough to storm off and leave him alone. It backfires when Arthur starts replying and it turns into a venting session.
Like, Uther said some dumb shit about Arthur? Merlin starts a fight about it.
The knights can’t follow orders? Merlin is disobedient enough that Arthur starts yelling about how dangerous it is when his men don’t follow orders.
Arthur’s feeling bad about someone he couldn’t save? Merlin makes him see why he’s doing enough by arguing with him about it and reminding him that he’s only human.
And Arthur knows what he’s doing, he catches on eventually and will occasionally walk up to Merlin, push his shoulder only enough to be annoying until Merlin stops whatever he’s doing, then Arthur will just say “Fight me.” and Merlin will either say something he knows will get Arthur angry or he’ll throw a punch he knows Arthur will block and they’ll start sparring. (Merlin learns to fight eventually, neither of them realise it’s happening until he sucker punches a bandit and he’s out cold)
Anyway, it becomes something they do to help Arthur vent his frustrations.
The best part? It works.
So Arthur sees Merlin upset. It goes on for about a week when Arthur realises what’s going on. He sits down next to Merlin on the floor one night, nudges his shoulder like he would if he wanted to fight, and says, “why are you upset? It’s not like you’ve got anything to worry about.” In a purposefully taunting way.
Merlin scowls and keeps working, and Arthur tries again, “Really. All you do is follow orders. It’s not hard.”
And so Merlin looks up, clearly angry until he sees what Arthur is trying to do, so he puts down what he’s doing and starts fighting back, “no, just exhausting when those orders are given by a prat.” Or “Maybe if I had a day off once in a while.” I don’t know, I suck at dialogue.
It goes on for a while, until they get too close to the issue, Merlin snaps, tells Arthur he’s a dick and sobs, yelling about magic, and the great dragon being manipulative, loosing his father, loosing Freya, Gaius lying to him about his father and thinking Uther is a good king and a good man, and literally everything else that’s gone wrong.
Arthur pulls him in and hugs him, then tells Merlin they’re fighting together from here on out. It takes a while, but they work it out.
There’s plenty of “fights” about Arthur feeling betrayed by Merlin keeping secrets and Merlin being mad at his situation in Camelot and then being frustrated that he can’t get himself to feel angry at Arthur (I’ve got a half baked character analysis for Merlin and Arthur’s codependency somewhere in my drafts. I’ll come back to it eventually.) but they’re okay and they figure it out and end up stronger for it.
I’m holding back on sharing the major character death/dark!Arthur angsty alternate ending for this, but let me know if you want to see it :)
Edit: Part 2 - (the angsty alternate ending)

Time for today's silly Merlin au! This time featuring himbo Arthur!
I think that the show should have leaned into the whole "Merlin's technically a creature of magic" aspect, both in terms of being magic incarnate and kin to the dragons, and I think Arthur should have also been forced to come to terms with it as well. However, this is Arthur we're talking about, so of course he wouldn't come to the right conclusions right away.
In this scenario, around season 5-ish, there's an evil sorcerer seeking revenge against Camelot for the purge who puts a spell on all of the humans in Camelot, one that would weaken them and cause such fatigue that no one would be able to even stand up after a while. But it's a powerful and taxing spell to cast, so the sorcerer can only afford to target the humans in Camelot to keep the number of targets as low as possible. Besides, what could the livestock in Camelot do to stop him anyways?
So everyone in Camelot is falling under this spell, and Arthur and the knights are rushing to prepare for battle against the sorcerer to make him lift the spell. However, with each hour that passes, everyone grows weaker and weaker.
Merlin does, of course, know that this spell has been cast and what it does, but he doesn't feel its affects and assumes that his magic is protecting him. He acts like he's growing weaker so he doesn't fall under anyone's suspicions for the wrong reasons. However, after Merlin summons and talks to Kilgarrah for advice on how to break the spell, Kilgarrah informs him that Merlin wasn't protected by his magic, but rather by the fact that he isn't truly human.
And Merlin decides to unpack the implications of that some other time, because he's got a kingdom and a prat to save.
Fast forwards to the knights getting their asses kicked by the sorcerer and the evil sorcerer preparing to kill Arthur, who's lying on the ground with his eyes closed. All the other knights were knocked out by a blast from the sorcerer, but Arthur's still barely clinging to consciousness, yet he's too weak to even open his eyes. All he can do is listen helplessly as the sorcerer prepares to kill them all.
But then the sorcerer yelps, as if he were hit by something. Arthur's hope skyrockets as the sorcerer yells "You! How are you even still awake?! Every single human in Camelot should be feeling the full effects of the spell by now!" Arthur thinks for a moment that one of his knights has found enough strength to overcome the spell and fight back, but that hope is quickly dashed when he hears Merlin's voice responding like he isn't tired in the slightest, saying, "Well it's a good thing I was never really human then."
Merlin decided to say that to throw the sorcerer off-kilter enough to distract him and give Merlin an advantage in the fight. Besides, Merlin can see that all of the knights, including Arthur, are knocked out on the ground, so there's no harm in admitting it to this sorcerer who he's definitely going to have to kill.
Arthur, meanwhile, is still conscious and completely reeling from Merlin's words. What the hell did he mean he wasn't human?! Has some vile magical creature taken Merlin's place?
After the battle (which sounded to Arthur like a bunch of grunts, pained yelps, and a final, wet gurgle), Arthur could feel the effects of the spell lifting, letting him open his eyes with a gasp. He frantically looks around to make sure Merlin's ok, but Merlin's only a few steps away from him, while the sorcerer lies dead on the ground with a sword buried in his chest.
Hearing Arthur's gasp, Merlin turns to him with a relieved smile and helps pulls Arthur to his feet. Arthur, meanwhile, is too stunned to even ask how Merlin of all people managed to kill a powerful sorcerer by himself, but Merlin's giving some unbelievable explanation that involves distracting the sorcerer and then getting a miraculous opening and stabbing the sorcerer. Arthur's nodding along, but inside, he's really searching man who might be Merlin or might be some magical imposter posing as Merlin, as awful as that is for Arthur to consider, for any signs that he's truly Merlin.
If he's an imposter, Arthur has to give him credit, he plays his part well. The man in front of him looks exactly like Merlin, talks like Merlin, walks with Merlin's lanky gait, and seems to know everything Merlin knows, even their inside jokes. Still, Arthur needs to be sure, so after they get back to the castle, Arthur goes down to the vaults and grabs a secret object that Uther used in the purge that could detect illusions and glamor magics. It was a simple clear crystal in the shape of a sphere and small enough to fit in the palm of a person's hand, but if someone or something that was using magic to alter their appearance came into contact with it, the crystal would glow with a bright light.
Arthur plants the sphere in his chambers and disguises it as a new paperweight. The next day, Arthur pretends to accidentally knock it off his desk, sending it rolling across the floor, and orders the maybe-Merlin to pick it up and bring it back to his desk. Maybe-Merlin rolls his eyes in a perfect imitation of Merlin and walks over to the crystal. To Arthur's shock and relief, the crystal doesn't glow when Merlin picks it up, so he definitely is the true Merlin.
But then that leads Arthur to a horrible conclusion: the Merlin he knew wasn't a human, and never was. And the only creatures with the ability to look convincingly human were creatures of magic.
Oh god, Merlin was a creature of magic.
Arthur decides that, in order for him to plot an appropriate course of action, he needs more information. Namely, he needs to know what exactly Merlin is.
So, Arthur sneaks into the library and secretly takes some of the bestiaries, searching for what manner of creature Merlin truly is. Arthur tries not to jump to the worst possible conclusions, but all of the creatures of magic that can take human form that Arthur knows of are horrible monsters that prey on humans. Take the sidhe and the lamia for examples!
But people don't randomly go missing or turn up dead from monster attacks very frequently in Camelot, and Merlin cries when Arthur so much as shoots a bunny, so if Merlin's some sort of monster that kills and eats humans, he's doing a piss poor job at being one. So, Merlin must be some sort of creature that doesn't hurt humans, which certainly narrows down the list.
Arthur eventually finds a list of peaceful, human-like creatures of magic, and he starts trying to narrow down what Merlin is. He couldn't be an elf, since his ears were huge and round, not pointed. He couldn't be a gnome, he was too tall and gangly. He couldn't be a nymph, he spent too much time indoors to be a nature spirit. He couldn't be a leprechaun, he didn't have a beard or an affinity towards gold. He couldn't be a fae or a sidhe, he doesn't make deals with anyone (besides when he goes gambling at the tavern). And he certainly couldn't be a dragonlord, they were all dead!
Arthur was just about to give up when he finally found what he was looking for! The book's passage on fairies described them as benevolent relatives to the fae who would often disguise themselves as humans and would bring good luck and fortune to whoever befriended them, while sometimes engaging in some fun mischief! That must be Merlin!
Come to think of it, Arthur did have some great moments of luck, some of them almost miraculous! Morgana's magic failing her the day of a battle, defeating a dragon single-handedly, surviving the questing beast's bite, and of course defeating monsters that were said to only be killed through magic. And Merlin had been there for all of those events!
The book also describes fairies as creatures that love all living beings and are closely connected with nature, which makes perfect sense considering how much Merlin hates hunting! And fairies could see into the true hearts of people, which was how Merlin always knew if a person was untrustworthy!
It all made so much sense! This even explained Merlin's random "visits to the tavern", when Arthur knew that Merlin rarely ever drank. According to the book, fairies could only maintain their human forms for so long before they needed to spend some time in their smaller winged forms.
The book even addressed how fairies could be born from a union between a particularly powerful fairy and a human, which even explained why Merlin never knew his father and how Merlin could be a creature of magic while having a human mother!
Now that he knew the truth, Arthur felt so much relief! His best friend wasn't some diabolical monster, he was just a playful and friendly fairy trying to live as a human! It made so much sense!
And now all Arthur had to do was prove it. All evidence pointed to Merlin being a fairy, but he needed concrete proof before he could take any action. According to the book, the blood of a fairy in a human disguise sparkled under the light of a full moon. So, Arthur devised a plan to take Merlin out on an overnight hunting trip the day before the next full moon and "accidentally" cut Merlin's arm with one of the crossbow bolts. Arthur would then bandage the cut for Merlin and, after a couple hours, insist on changing the bandages, and pocket the first bloodied bandage.
Sure, Arthur felt guilty about purposely cutting his friend, but this was Merlin's fault for keeping the fact that he wasn't human a secret over their ten years of friendship! So, Arthur goes through with his plan, and when he held the used bandage up to the moonlight after Merlin had fallen asleep, he has to hold back a gasp as the red blood on the cloth shimmers and turns a bright golden color. Well, the book was right, the blood certainly sparkled!
(It was a shame that Arthur never read into warlocks, and how the magic in a warlock's blood made their blood turn gold under the light of a full moon.)
Arthur then turned to look at his peacefully sleeping friend, and swore that he would do everything he could to help his friendly little fairy.
Shortly after that revelation, Arthur starts actively noticing all of the strokes of luck he has. Bandits can never land a hit on him because they're too busy getting knocked out by tree branches or tripping over roots, his baths and meals are always the perfect temperature no matter how long he waits, and his injuries all heal at near-impossible rates. Hell, Arthur couldn't even recall the last time he got sick with something as small as a cold!
So Arthur tries to do little things for Merlin to show him his appreciation, like giving Merlin flower crowns (which fairies are said to like and Merlin absolutely adores), giving him a shiny silver mirror (fairies are supposed to like shiny things, and Merlin's never had a proper mirror before), and giving Merlin parts of his own meals as a food offering (which Merlin of course isn't about to turn down).
(Arthur's also kinda frustrated at the lack of information about fairy courting rituals lol!)
But Arthur isn't the best at keeping secrets, so the knights of the round table eventually catch him trying to set up a nice little fairy ring for Merlin in the garden, and they also "figure out" that Merlin is a fairy, and it all spirals from there until the entire castle is trying to show their appreciation for their fairy friend.
Merlin's very confused by all of this (since Arthur's terrible at actually communicating, Merlin doesn't know that Arthur thinks he's a fairy), but he's not about to turn down all of these lovely gifts!
And there's lots of different directions the story could go from there! A pretty funny scenario would be some rival king catching wind of how Camelot's great victories are all because of their king befriending a kind fairy, so he kidnaps Merlin in an attempt to make Merlin grant him such great luck and victory in battle. However, all they do to imprison Merlin is pour a circle of salt around him (since they firmly believe that fairies cannot cross a barrier of salt).
Merlin's just kinda raises an eyebrow and thinks that this is the weirdest kidnapping ever, steps over the salt, and escapes back to Camelot.
Thank you for reading through my rambling! :D

Some day I will stop getting ideas in the middle of fic that are UNFUCKING RELATED TO THE IDEA WHY—
ANYWAY
Au where Merlin left (magic reveal under Uther reign for exemple) but then years later he comes back (for whatever reason) and (crack no angst) Merthur get to be batshit insane about each other like before but like… People of Camelot :
1. Kinda forgot about that Manservant Arthur had long ago
2. They totally forgot how much Merthur… well act like merthur lol
3. Some weren’t even in camelot when they met
So it’s just like
Arthur, the king, *screaming in the corridor*: MERLIN
Servant number 1 : ???
Arthur : WHERE IS THAT DOLLEPHEAD ? MERLIN !
Merlin from the other side of the castle using magic : FUCK OFF YOU PRAT I’M SLEEPING
The whole castle : ?!??
Arthur : GET YOUR ASS HERE
Leon : ah. Nostalgia
Merthur : *screaming at each other*
Knight 7 : isn’t this treason
Leon : nan That’s just Merlin

I need to cleanse my brain after seeing such terrible takes on Arthur
People genuinely think at the core of their being and his that he is just an asshole who doesn't think Merlin is brave
(yet 5 minutes later drops everything because he has a dream or vision or whatever he thinks it was of Merlin and trusts him implicity to change their tactics at Camlann)
Like FOR THE LOVE OF CAMELOT I beg ya not to just get on the arthurs an ass train
YES he can be an ass and a prat but he is so much more so fucking much more than that and he loves Merlin to death (not even talking shipping here)
and if you can't see that and take his snarky or rude or hurtful things as gospel whilst being blind to the fact he was hurt when he said it AND DIDN'T FUCKING MEAN IT then there is no hope for you

It's A Trap!
summary : Prince Arthur uses reader to lure Merlin out whenever he is hiding from him.
word count : 0.5k
type : imagines
pairing/s involved : Merlin x Reader (?)
warning/s : none. just Merlin pining over reader and Arthur being an ass.
here is my masterlist!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note : I thought of this when I watched the clip where Arthur is looking for Merlin and he was hiding behind the door. 😂 It was a one shot before and I heavily edited it too.
There is no denying that Prince's Arthur's manservant is in love with (Y/N), a noble lady from one of the most prestigious houses in Camelot.
Everyone, even Arthur himself, knows it. And that's saying something. 🫢😂
From the way Merlin would stare at you with heart in his eyes, how he would follow you everywhere like a dog, or his ears pick up whenever he hears your name.
Gaius almost wants to take a leaf out of Van Gogh's book and tear off his own ears because Merlin wouldn't shut up about you. He also writes about you in his letters for Hunith.
Now, does Arthur take advantage of it? Of course, he does. Like,"Do you know Lady (Y/N) would be there?" or "If you fetch flowers for Gwen, you could also get some for your lady love."
The epitome of the statement, however, is making you his trap. Confused? I'll explain further later.
"Merlin?! Where are you?!"
It's very common for the palace staff to hear the prince of Camelot blaringly calling out to his manservant. Although some people catch Merlin scurrying away from him or has an idea of his whereabouts, no one bothers to tell Arthur anything.
After all, it's completely understandable and why many servants can empathize. As admirable and honorable the prince is, he can be a handful at times.
That's where you come in.
Whenever Arthur has given up searching for Merlin, he would search for you instead.
He often finds you in the gardens with the other noble ladies, helping some servants with menial tasks, or having tea with Morgana and Gwen. Uther enjoys your company too, making the usual stoic ruler laugh and gossip.
"May I excuse Lady (Y/N)? I need her assistance with something."
"Is it Merlin again?"
"...Yes."
You would go to Gaius' chambers, the kitchens, servant's quarters, or anywhere Merlin could've gone to. Then, you would tell anyone that you're looking for him to speak about personal matters and you'll be waiting for him with a place of your choice.
Arthur would wait with you, but he's hiding where Merlin can't see him.
Why do you continue helping the royal prat? It's because you find it funny.
You're also curious, thinking how long will it take Merlin to stop seeking you out because most of the time it's just one of Arthur's traps.
The prince's knights bet on it. Gwaine and Leon are winning— saying how Merlin will never learn.
It's true, he doesn't. I guess love does make you an idiot.
Merlin always approaches you with a beaming grin on his face and blushed cheeks, acting like a lovesick school boy.
"My lady, you were looking for me?"
"Well you see..."
Arthur would wait for Merlin to get closer before grabbing the manservant in his clutches.
"Here you are, you idiot!"
Sometimes Merlin would free himself and run, sometimes he doesn't and Arthur would drag him away while warning him of possible punishments.
But he never misses the chance to look back and give you the most charming smile anyone has ever graced you with.
"Merlin really loves you, doesn't he?" You hear Gwen beside you, linking your arm with hers. Nervous and worried, you reply—
"Yes. I just hope that I get to tell Merlin that I share his affections. But Arthur is always with him."

Okay but let's look at it from Arthur's point of view.
He's an arrogant prat and then this twink comes into his life and makes him rethink every decision and his way of thinking. He starts to loosen up and make real relationships with people.
Then he is betrayed by his father. His sister. His uncle. And let's face it. His girlfriend. Because this is Arthur's view and he doesn't know what is going on behind these betrayals.
He doesn't know his sister was his sister or had magic. He didn't know when she turned on him. And he loved her and cared for her. And she's standing there giving that evil smirk and blaming him for everything and the poor sod doesn't even know how this came about.
Then he sees his uncle whom he trusted despite everything with a sword in his hand and he doesn't even know where he went wrong or what he did to get in this situation.
Then there was also his girlfriend who he loved with all his heart. And she went ahead and kissed Arthur's knight who he had chosen. The knight who represented the biggest change that had come in Arthur because he was the first knight Arthur chose.
And despite all this, he forgives and loves and still trusts people who come in his life.
And then there's a new knight who represented the growth and prosperity of Camelot. And let's face it, Arthur was not wrong in killing Kara. He gave her a trial and heard her side. But this knight then betrayed Arthur and stabbed him and went to the sister whose betrayal Arthur still had not come to terms with.
And then the twink. The best friend. The one constant in Arthur's life lied to him. About a core part of him. And the first reaction Arthur has is that 'he would know'. That despite everything, Merlin was someone Arthur knew. And yet, all it took was a little time and some stilted conversation to overcome one of the biggest fears of his life. Magic was something that had disrupted his entire life and yet, all it took was this one peasant having it because that's the kind of person Arthur is.
Arthur trusts and loves and gives it his everything. But he also forgives and grieves and blames himself more than he blames others. Even if he had no fault in it. He is resilient and stupidly brave.
'I want you to always be you' will stay with me forever because despite not knowing about the magic, Arthur did know Merlin. Arthur knew what Merlin needed. And he has come a long way from an Arrogant Prat to becoming the Once and Future King.

If Arthur has learned one thing from his father's teachings, it is to not trust.
For friends all eventually part ways, and lovers all end in tragedy. They are both nothing but human, and if there is one thing that humans do best, it is to betray.
Arthur carries that with him for the entirety of his childhood, and by the time he is well into his teens, he is alone except for a few that his father has deemed as suitable playmates.
It all changes when he meets Merlin.
Merlin is nothing like any of the friends that Arthur has had - He insults Arthur with a glint in his eyes, and is confident as he tells the crown prince off in aid of a servant. Arthur feels a pang in his chest and reacts the only way he knows how. By taunting Merlin and throwing him off into the dungeons.
Arthur turns in his bed that night, sleepless. He thinks of Merlin’s sarcastic remarks and blue eyes, and wonders if he might’ve ruined the only chance he had at something with the resemblance of a friend.
The next time they meet, Merlin shoves past Arthur at the market, and Arthur panics. He wants to reach out and apologize and offer Merlin gifts in sincerity, yet his mouth and pride act before his mind, and once again he goes back to taunting.
Arthur doesn’t sleep that night, for fate has given him another chance at befriending this strange boy, and he has failed her twice. Arthur has lost the privilege of being someone other than his title.
But she is continuously merciful, as by a strange series of events, Merlin is assigned as his manservant.
Arthur cannot stop himself from smiling when he is insulted once more.
As the years pass, Arthur gets closer and closer to Merlin. And when he finds himself comforted by Merlin's presence as he is laying down logs in the fireplace one night, he is terrified.
Because Merlin treats him as Arthur, the royal prat and downright pain in Merlin's arse, and not Arthur Pendragon, the prince of Camelot. Arthur is treated like a human for what is possibly the first time in his life, and he reacts like one.
Arthur has broken the one rule given to him by his father, and with every time he sleeps next to Merlin or eats whatever Merlin has cooked for him, Arthur has silently and unknowingly placed his life into the palms of Merlin's hands.
Arthur trusts Merlin, and he is terrified.
He knows that Merlin doesn’t have it in his blood to be unkind (he stood up to a prince for a servant, for gods’ sake), yet he cannot resolve the thoughts of Merlin leaving him behind now that he has Arthur between his fingers. The idea of betrayal and sorrow drives itself into Arthur’s mind to the point of madness, and he knows it’s because he’ll be rendered helpless if Merlin really does turn his back on him.
Arthur thinks of distancing himself from Merlin, but even the thought pains him too much. So instead, he resigns to his fate and leans into Merlin like a moth to fire.
Merlin tells Arthur about his magic one cold night.
His voice is soft and his hands are shaking. His eyes never stray from Arthur’s expression.
Arthur’s mind is muddled and although he knows he should be feeling a sense of betrayal, of how his father was and always had been right in his judgement not to trust, a raw feeling of elation dances across his skin instead.
Because Merlin trusts him back.
Arthur has handed his life over to Merlin through sips of stew and naps during hunting trips, and Merlin has handed it right back.
Merlin is a sorcerer, and instead of executing him, Arthur kisses him.
They lay in bed together that night, huddled underneath the thick red blanket in Arthur’s chambers. Arthur tells Merlin about his fear of betrayal and his father’s teachings. He tells Merlin about how he’s wanted nothing more than to be seen as a real, living person with something else other than his surname, and about the sleepless nights Arthur’s spent thinking about him.
Arthur tells Merlin he loves him, and Merlin says it back.
Merlin sleeps before him, and in the silence Arthur can’t help but think of his father’s teachings. He can't help but think of stories of anguish and sorrow and pain.
Yet it all dissipates as he takes one look at Merlin’s lips, and hears the soft inhale from his sleeping figure. And as Arthur lays besides Merlin, he wonders how his father had ever thought betrayal was the thing that humans did best, when it had always clearly been love.

Evening has fallen on Camelot and the travellers and vendors from outside the town are leaving. The winter wind has risen and Arthur and Merlin share a warm supper and a comfortable silence in Arthur's room. Merlin is wearing Arthur's old, discarded clothes, something to cover him and keep him warmer than what Merlin has and Arthur wishes he could buy him something new, something nice and warm and cosy but he cannot show this kind of favour, not even to his manservant. His discarded clothes are proof enough of how much he cares for Merlin. And Merlin's smile when he gave them to him warmed Arthur from the depths of his gut. They are both in front of the lit fireplace, Merlin is talking about something frivolous, but Arthur is unable to listen.
It's time for you to fully understand your duties and one of your duties is to marry, Arthur.
His father's voice rings in his ears and Arthur cannot hold back a grimace at the memory. It is as if his father does not see what he is doing for the kingdom, it is as if he does not understand all the sacrifices he is already making, the trials he is overcoming, and the difficulties he has encountered so far. Because for his father, he is not fulfilling his duties.
Arthur turns his gaze to Merlin, who is gesticulating animatedly without noticing the wine overflowing from the cup, and Arthur feels a melancholic smile make its way onto his face.
For with Merlin nothing can ever be.
Because Camelot needs a queen. Because Camelot needs an heir. Because that is its primary duty, and Arthur will do what he must.
Even if it is to be a loveless marriage. Even if he never gets the chance to be with the one person he truly loves. Even if he knows that Merlin will sooner or later turn away from him because every now and then he sees his own passion in Merlin's eyes and isn't that incredibly cruel?
"Arthur, what's wrong?" Arthur shakes his head and wakes up from his thoughts, staring at Merlin as if seeing him there for the first time since that night. Merlin has the usual expression of when he's worried but he tries not to give it away and Arthur thinks it's immensely stupid to waste time mulling over what's going to happen in the near future because then he can't enjoy the precious time he's spending with Merlin.
"Nothing, I was just thinking how is it possible that you have such a ridiculous face!" "Ohi, prat!"
Merlin throws the first thing he comes across at him and Arthur laughs loudly.
Arthur turns back to look at Merlin, who sticks out a tongue at him and starts talking about what he was talking about before.
Arthur smiles.
Maybe in another time…
Maybe in another life…

Do you think if Arthur found out that Merlin had an entire show named after him he’d be a prat about it?
Like, “No, that makes sense. Why should my name be part of it? I’m only the king of Camelot that came back from the dead 1500 years later to save Albion 😒”

Arthur knows he’s changed. He’s grown and matured. Between the battles and the losses, a new man has emerged where a spoiled boy once stood. And he’s proud of that; that he can be the leader Camelot needs; that he can take care of his people.
But he neglects to realize a catalyst for all his change. He overlooks it as an extension of himself, so close that it’s absence is like losing a hand, his sword, his legs… his heart.
Then one day, he sees them together: Merlin and Thomas, the servant Arthur terrorized for his short employ at the castle. Thomas smiles at Merlin and when they talk, it’s like they’re sharing a secret between them. One that makes them laugh, and Thomas clap Merlin on the shoulder while he shakes his head. When they part, Merlin looks back to where Arthur stands far enough away to not be privy to the conversation but close enough that were Arthur to need Merlin, or were Merlin to need Arthur, they’d be close enough to intervene.
“What was that about?” Arthur asks when Merlin rejoins him at his side.
“Just catching up.”
“Didn’t know you were friends.”
The word stings Arthur’s throat as he chokes it out. It isn’t that Merlin can’t have friends. If anything Merlin has many, and Arthur, secretly, counts himself among them.
It’s in that very moment—looking between his old servant and the man that changed how he looked at servants—that Arthur realizes that it isn’t the battles or the losses that changed him.
Merlin smiles his big dimpled smile at Arthur, oblivious to Arthur’s sudden realization and inner turmoil and says, “Who else would understand what a prat you are?”
Arthur knocks Merlin’s shoulder with his own, a sudden aching squeeze of fondness stealing all his breath. You’ve changed me, Arthur thinks, for the better and in ways only you could. And part of him wishes he could say it to Merlin, but he hasn’t changed that much, not yet.
Months later, after Merlin tries to die for Arthur for the thousandth time, Arthur grabs Merlin’s face and locks their lips together. He’s a man of actions and not words, but when Merlin wraps himself around Arthur, burying his hands in his hair and moaning into the kiss, he knows Merlin understands. Merlin always does.

SWEETHEART — ARTHUR PENDRAGON
Tumblr media
masterlist
→ pairing: arthur pendragon x princess!reader
→ description: as a child, you had spent countless summers in camelot, your whole youth characterised by infatuation with arthur pendragon. though the feeling was mutual, your responsibilities as princess of your own kingdom meant that you had not returned in years. arthur had always held hope that one day you would reunite — but when you do, news of your betrothal leads him to believe he may have lost you forever.
→ warnings: angst at first, happy ending!!, merlin being a little shit stirring prat (who i adore).
“So this is the Princess Y/N we’re talking about here?”
Arthur scoffed at his friend’s teasing grin, rolling his eyes at the way Merlin’s arms crossed over his chest.
“The same Princess Y/N with whom you’ve been in love for… quite possibly all of eternity? Who you’ve spoken of constantly since we met? Who you’ve not seen in years except for in your dreams?”
“Alright, alright, Merlin,” Arthur warned, “Yes it is that Princess Y/N. And you’re not to say a word to her. I have waited a long time for this moment and you will not ruin this for me.”
Merlin smirked, uncrossing his arms to raise them in a show of surrender, “I won’t, I won’t.”
There was a moment of silence — Arthur pausing to heave in a deep breath as it dawned on him that you really had just arrived back in Camelot.
It had been almost five years since he had seen you.
Your father and his had been close friends and allies since their own childhood, and so you and Arthur had grown incredibly close.
Too close, perhaps.
You were his first love, and he yours, and having given each other all of your firsts you had both assumed that one day you might wed and rule both of your kingdoms together.
Instead, you had not been back in so long that he had begun to fear you never would.
As the only child in a rare kingdom accepting of a female heir, you had been in training to become queen upon your father’s death since you reached 17.
As a result, you’d not had the free time to visit Camelot, much to your dismay. Arthur too hadn’t been able to visit you, and so contact had ceased entirely as you went about your busy lives.
To say you missed Arthur was an understatement — he had been your absolute world.
From the days of chasing him through castle grounds and giggling under tables, to the days of lovelorn stares and stolen kisses, the arrogant prince would remain the love of your life for as long as you would live. You were certain of that.
And to now be returning to Camelot after all of this time, you were utterly terrified — even more so given the news that you were returning to share.
As soon as you caught sight of Arthur amidst the throng of knights your heart raced impossibly fast; Faster even than it already was at the thought of seeing him.
Now, it was real.
“Is that her?” Merlin pointed a finger directly at you, causing Arthur to twist on his heel and spot you and your guards (though not before grabbing Merlin’s finger and twisting his arm for daring to point at you).
Your pace quickened as you watched his eyes widen, and leapt straight into his arms when you reached him, though you knew this was not something you should be doing in public — even if you were tucked away where only the other Knights of Camelot (and Merlin) could see the encounter.
“My Lord,” you beamed, pulling back from the embrace to take in the sight of the man before you. A man still just as perfect as he once was.
“My Lady,” he smiled, his cheeks rosy as the sound of your voice washed over him still, though he would claim it was due to the cold, “I—I almost fear that I am simply imagining you or that it cannot possibly be you.”
You giggled, biting your lip as you felt his eyes linger intensely on yours, “It’s me, Artie. The same old Princess Y/N/N. Could we talk, perhaps, in private?”
He quirked his brow as he looked down at you, before nodding and leading you elsewhere. You noticed what you assumed to be his servant following close behind, but Arthur dismissed him with haste and he hovered seemingly just out of earshot instead, “Don’t worry about Merlin. I’ll introduce you after.”
You grinned nervously, still taken aback by even being in his presence.
“Little has changed, I see,” he laughed, before leaning to whisper, “You are still as beautiful as ever.”
“Unfortunately, Arthur, that— that’s why I am here,” you frowned at the ground, refusing to catch his eye again, “In fact, a lot has changed.”
“What do you mean, my love?”
“Arthur I—, I—, I have come here to bestow an invitation upon you.”
Arthur’s face twisted in further confusion, a frown set on his face as your words worried him, “An invitation?”
“To my wedding,” you gulped, watching the colour drain from his features as you spoke the dreaded words, “I am to be married in a fortnight.”
Arthur took a step back and you could now no longer feel his breath fanning across your face. You had waited an age to be reunited and to be doing so on these terms was agonising.
“This must be a joke, Princess. Tell me it’s a joke. Please, tell me it’s a joke?”
The tears that had been pricking at your eyes fell freely now as the weight of your confession crashed down upon you.
You would never love a man like you loved Arthur — it was an impossibility and you knew it. Your betrothal was merely the result of your father’s ill health and the influence of your fiancé - his closest advisor.
You were all but trapped in this engagement, and you had to make that clear to Arthur.
Your father had intended to send his Knights to invite the Prince and King Uther, but you had insisted upon breaking the news yourself.
Some small piece of you hoped that Arthur would object so profusely that he would instead beg for your hand — because you knew your father’s love for Camelot might outweigh the influence of Lord F/N and he might change his mind.
But you feared that this was merely a pipe dream, knowing that Arthur’s pride might in fact act as a barrier to his honesty.
He had missed you immeasurably too, of course, and Merlin’s prying eyes and ears couldn’t let Arthur be so silly. He might know Arthur to be a prat, but he wasn’t about to let him waste his chance at getting you back.
Besides, he knew he wouldn’t be able to cope with the moping.
“Arthur, I’m sorry—,”
“Who is it? Who is he?”
“I don’t—,”
“I must know.”
“It— I— I am to be wed to Lord F/N…”
Arthur’s face almost seemed to wash with relief for a moment, before the former strained expression returned. Sure — he could assume you weren’t in love with your betrothed, but regardless you were getting married to a man that wasn’t him.
“Is this a strategic marriage, would you say?” Trust Merlin to interject so impertinently and at such an awkward time.
You looked taken aback, perplexed by the servant boy’s apparent lack of manners, “Excuse me?”
“Apologies, my Lady, but I only ask for the Prince’s sake because I fear he won’t, and I know he wants to. Desperately, actually,” the cheeky grin on his face and Arthur’s wide eyes told you this behaviour was not unusual of him, “Is this marriage purely for the sake of your kingdom, then? Or a love match?”
Of course he knew the answer. It was clear as day — every bordering kingdom knew of your father’s declining health, and of Lord F/N having worked his way up to become his closest confidante.
“Artie— You know I love my father dearly,” you were practically pleading with him as you began to answer, addressing him instead of his servant, “And he cares for Lord F/N. I do hope that one day I might love him. Until then… Well, you have to understand that I have no choice.”
The frown on Arthur’s face was an agonising sight for you to see.
“I’m surprised there was no marriage alliance between your kingdom and Camelot, my Lady,” Merlin continued, still smirking, and Arthur elbowed him in the side, “Ow! I’m just saying… I’m sure the King would have obliged. His heir, wedded to a woman who will also be Queen in her own right. Two kingdoms so aligned. More power. Seems a no brainer to me. But eh, a wedding is a wedding to me! Even if it should be Arthur you’re marrying.”
Arthur looked distraught by Merlin’s outburst.
You couldn’t figure out what to say.
“Right. Leaving you to it. I’ll be just over there.”
Arthur shooting daggers at him had clearly finally hit him, and he scampered off, leaving you and Arthur staring intensely into each other’s eyes.
“Do you think…” you began, your voice barely a whisper as you looked down at your feet for a moment, “Do you think that he is right? Your servant? Do you share his belief that our fathers would agree to such an idea?”
Arthur fought the twitch of a smile threatening to erupt on his face now that you’d expressed even the slightest hope that that could be an option for you.
“I do,” he nodded, capturing your hands in his as he spoke, “And I’d be lying if I said that I hadn’t hoped I might have the chance to propose that while you were here. I’m not the childish boy I once was — well, for the most part — and to marry the woman I love as well as strengthening my kingdom? I can think of nothing I’d like more.”
You tried desperately to suppress the butterflies in your stomach at the sound of the words “The woman I love.”
“But would King Uther agree?”
Arthur scoffed, “My father despises Lord F/N, the meddlesome bloody fool. He would have us married today if it pushed that man into obscurity. He’s the reason our kingdoms have become so much less closely allied in recent years. Our fathers rarely see each other because of his interventions.”
You gulped, taking stock of what he had just said and pondering what this might mean.
“And that’s the truth?”
“Would I ever lie to you, Y/N/N?”
At this you sighed — you knew he wouldn’t. You knew he was always honest with you, even if you were the only person who ever had the fortune of being graced with this honesty.
You glanced around you, acknowledging that nobody was looking but your guards, and pulled him behind a wall nearby into the quiet of where Merlin had previously been lurking.
Your hands found his jaw and you tiptoed to kiss him, breathless at the spontaneity of your actions. He was quick to kiss back (and as good of a kisser as you remembered!) and before you knew it he had your back against the wall and deepened the kiss with parted lips.
You were like this for a few moments, before you placed a hand on his chest, feeling the fast thrum of his heartbeat, and shot him a beaming smile.
“Well, what are we waiting for? Where might we find your father?”
———
ok so i had so much fun writing that !!! i hope you enjoyed, i could make this a two parter if anyone would want? (either about them discussing w uther or about the wedding itself? please let me know if you’d like either of those!)
requests are still open as i’m finally back writing, but in the meantime here is my masterlist!

(Post magic reveal but before Arthur gives Merlin a position on the council. They’re still in that awkward phase of trying to work out where they stand now)
Arthur: what are you talking about? You love working here.
Merlin: nope. I think I just got Stockholm syndrome or something. You’re still a prat.
Arthur: I’ve fired you multiple times. You refused to leave. Now you’re refusing to do the job you stayed for?
Merlin: You’d nearly been killed twice in three days the first time you fired me. Of course I stayed but it wasn’t for the job.
Arthur: You came back to Camelot after we went to save Ealdor.
Merlin: My mother told me to. And the dragon told me about destiny.
Arthur: That grand speech after the questing beast.
Merlin: You almost died. Again. Y’know, that whole destiny thing?
Arthur: Okay, fine. You’re only here for destiny, I could be anyone for all you’d care.
Merlin: *outraged gasp* You take that back! I stayed because of you! Because I believe in the man you are, you prat! How dare you insinuate that I don’t care about you?!
Arthur: So you admit it? You love working here.
Merlin: Arthur, you’re trying to convince me to muck out the stables. You have stable hands! And again, I stayed for you. Not the job.
