*Note: This post isn't about if this Ken in the Barbie movie is going to be queer but that he is inspired by a Ken doll that "accidently" became a queer icon. Ryan Gosling's Ken in Barbie(2023) is based on the famous best selling Ken doll, Earring Magic Ken, also know as Fey Ken or Gay Ken.
"Mattel had conducted a survey of girls asking if Ken should be retained as Barbie's boyfriend or whether a new doll should be introduced in that role. Survey results indicated that girls wanted Ken kept but wanted him to look "cooler". USA Today noted after the American International Toy Fair that the doll Soul Train Jamal was also wearing an earring that year. According to manager of marketing communications for Mattel, Lisa McKendall, "We tried to keep [Ken] as cool as possible." This generation of the Ken doll had blond highlights in his traditionally brown hair and was dressed in a lavender mesh shirt, purple pleather vest, a necklace with a circular charm and, as the name indicates, an earring in his left ear.
These clothing choices led to gay commentator Dan Savage joking that Mattel toy designers had "spent a weekend in LA or New York dashing from rave to rave, taking notes and Polaroids." He also suggested that little girls' idea of coolness was shaped by homoerotic MTV music videos, Madonna's dancers, and what ACT UP/Queer Nation members were wearing to demonstrations and parties. Donna Gibbs told the San Francisco Examiner in November 1993 that the team of (presumably straight) women who made the doll were surprised that gay men wanted him.

In July 1993, Dan Savage wrote an article on Earring Magic Ken titled, "Ken Comes Out." He noted in his article that, in addition to his outfit's perceived flamboyance, his necklace resembled chrome sex toys that queer people were wearing as charms at the time. Savage expressed feelings of ambivalence about Ken's new style, writing, "Queer Ken is the high water mark of, depending on your point of view, either queer infiltration of popular culture or the thoughtless appropriation of queer culture by heterosexuals [. . .] Queer imagery has so permeated our culture that from rock stars (Axl Rose and his leather chaps) to toy designers, mainstream America isn’t even aware when it’s adopting queer fashions and mores."

Kitsch-minded gay men responded to this press by buying the doll in record numbers, making Earring Magic Ken the best-selling Ken model in Mattel's history. The doll debuted in stores for around $11 (equivalent to $20.63 in 2021) and had completely sold out by the Christmas season, largely due to gay men buying the doll in droves. Due to high demand, Chicago's FAO Schwartz created a wait list, and, allegedly, some shops in San Francisco began to sell Earring Magic Ken for prices ranging between $17 (equivalent to $31.89 in 2021) to $24 (equivalent to $45.02 in 2021). (The latter claim was disputed in the Bay Area Reporter in October 1993 by the general manager of San Francisco FAO Schwartz. According to him, only a few gay men were coming into his store, and Earring Magic Ken was selling better in New York and Chicago than San Francisco.) Earring Magic Ken was also popular with gay men in the United Kingdom, and sold well at the toy shop Hamleys in 1993. Toy scalper Mr. Barger told the Wall Street Journal in 1996 that Earring Magic Ken was so popular that he was able to re-sell him to specialty shops at premium prices. Richard Roeper, writing for the Chicago Sun Times, referred to him as "The Cabbage Patch Doll of the summer of '93."
A major appeal of the doll for many gay men was that Mattel did not market it to them on purpose. Rick Garcia, director of Chicago's Catholic Advocates for Lesbian and Gay Rights, told People magazine in 1993 that the stereotypical dress was funny to him because he believed it was an accident, and that it would have offended him if it was purposeful. In 1993, many newspapers interviewed individual gay men in California to understand the phenomenon. San Francisco resident described Earring Magic Ken as, "a pariah setting foot in one of America's sanctuaries." Another California resident, Bill Harley, described Earring Magic Ken as, "A campy, funny thing to have." Laguna Beach resident Keith Clark-Epley had more reservations about the toy, saying that, "It's an uptight heterosexual male doll following gay fashion and who is still behind the times," and believed that calling the doll gay could potentially reinforce negative stereotypes about gay people." rhaenyra and alicent are not the same age. alicent is older than rhaenyra and she was not against the marriage with her father at first. it wasn't until aegon was born the relationship began to sour.
rhaenyra's claim to the throne is in her mind and the mind of many, solid as viserys word, who they know never backed up. she sees the acts of the greens and aegon as treason and a form of kintrap.
the death of her daughter visenya, losing her due the trauma of losing her throne and her father causes her to consider war. lucerys' attack and death solifies in her mind that this is the only way to regain her right.
mysaria is her unofficial mistress of whispers and does not mind her and daemon's relationship. their dynamic would be one I would love to explore.
an au where she is able to succeed as queen can be done if anyone is interested.
like in the books, the age difference between her and her uncle, while a good amount, is not that noticable. and per targaryen tradition, it was not seen as wrong, except for viserys who did not want daemon close to rhaenyra once she became heir.

chani leaving at the end instead of bowing down leaves open for exploration of irulan and paul's relationship, as a political alliance and as a marriage. even odd parallels between leto and jessica.
irulan is trained by the bene gesserit, however, she is told she is weak due to her individuality and not following most of the rules that are set for her.
i believe irulan is fascinated by paul atreides, aware that his mother went against rules to birth a boy when only girls are in the order.
she is a writer and scribe and transcribe stories from one language to another and speaks plenty of them.
regardless of paul, irulan always knew she was meant to be empress.

Firestone Walker Brewing releases the "crushable" Firestone XPA. The first in a seasonal series for 2024.

Paso Robles, CA: Firestone Walker today unveiled its first of three seasonal offerings slated for 2024—the all-new Firestone XPA, a next-generation extra pale ale brewed with Southern Hemisphere hops and California style, available now in all Firestone Walker markets. “XPA is the number one craft beer style in Australia and it’s something we’re excited to champion it here in the U.S.," said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. "The appeal of XPAs is obvious--they offer everything you love in a good pale ale at a crushable ABV. We fell in love with the style during our travels to hop farms across Australia and New Zealand and we were inspired to make our own."
Firestone XPA (5% ABV) is rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets in can (12-oz six packs) and limited draft formats for the duration of winter and through the spring season into June. An early batch of Firestone XPA earned a Bronze Medal at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival in the International Pale Ale category.
Crisp, Hoppy & Crushable
Firestone XPA is built around New Zealand’s Nelson hop with its grapefruit and tropical Sauvignon Blanc qualities, all backed up with a dollop of classic Mosaic hops. The resulting beer offers a trifecta of drinkability: crisp, hoppy and crushable.
Firestone XPA also taps into Firestone Walker’s roots as a heritage brewer of California pale ales.
“Creating this beer brought a lot of joy to our production team, there was definitely some pent-up enthusiasm for pale ale brewing,” Brynildson said. “We went all in to fine-tune several test batches and nail what we were after with this beer.”
He added, “We wanted to lead with the punchy tropical qualities of the Nelson hop, and we found that adding just the right amount of Mosaic makes the fruit flavors all the more lush and expansive.”
“XPA is the predominant beer style in Australia for a reason,” said Firestone Walker Brand Director Hannah Barnett. “I think it has the potential to take the U.S. by storm at some point, or at the very least become a fixture in the American pale ale landscape. lyanna was the knight of the laughing tree. rhaegar finds this out.
she does try to avoid rhaegar after she is given the crown of love and beauty but there are magical and otherworldly stakes.
lyanna becomes aware of the prophecy of ice and fire and that there has to be three dragons, and despite her respect for elia, she does fall for rhaegar. despite this the pregnancy surprise her.
he takes her out of winterfell before going to dorne where she spends a whole year and something.
she falls quickly pregnant after that considering a pregnancy period is of nine months.
while she tells need that the child's name is aegon, in honor of the prophecy, she wants him to have a northern name. she never learns what ned names him.
this is more a headcanon of mine, but her tomb is constructed over where vermax, jacaerys velaryon's dragon lay a hatch of eggs. only one of them remains. ned founds it when building her crypt and puts the crown of winter roses, one of rhaegar's rubies and the egg for jon, eventually to find.

7 From the Women with Kristen Rae Bowden
Charlottesville-based singer/songwriter Kristen Rae Bowden's music exhibits a bold vulnerability. She’s a confessional storyteller with a theatrical flair who draws from a wide swath of influences, including Kate Bush, Phoebe Bridgers, Radiohead, and Madi Diaz.
Her latest song, "Fault Lines," is a powerful indie pop piece about a break up she experienced. She paints a captivating musical picture using vibrant lyrics and stunning melodies as she compares fault lines to relationships.
We got a chance to speak with Kristen about her music, career, and influences in this edition of 7 From the Women:
What have you been working to promote lately?
I just released a midsummer single called ‘Fault Lines’! It’s a road-trip-worthy indie pop song inspired by a breakup on the Highway 1 in California. In case you’re unfamiliar, the Highway 1/Pacific Coast Highway is an iconic, stunningly scenic road that winds along the Cali coastline. As it does so it crosses several fault lines, including the famous San Andreas Fault, which has been responsible for numerous earthquakes.
In my song I used the cliff-side scenery to represent the feeling of a breakup… like you’re on the edge of a precipice and can’t see what’s next. And I used the first line, “It’s all your fault,” to word-play with ideas of blame and shaky ground. The whole song grew out of that first line… I’d always wanted to start a song that way. (I wonder what that says about me?)
‘Fault Lines’ came from a collection of my memories, as opposed to just one, so I’m proud of how cohesive I think it is. I never really had a breakup on the Highway 1, but somehow I’ve been in that incredibly vivid part of the world at times when various relationships were failing. The scenery there provides a sharp, poignant backdrop for end-of-the-world feelings.
Sonically I was inspired by 1990’s pop-rock… the stuff I heard on the radio when I was still riding around in my parents’ car. I think the song reflects that, but with ethereal textures blended into it. Please have a listen! I’m very happy with this version of the tune.

Please tell us about your favorite song written, recorded, or produced by another woman and why it’s meaningful to you.
The last time I stopped in for this interview I talked about Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You,” which is still and forever a classic favorite of mine. Today the first song that comes to mind is Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand the Rain”. It has an undeniable groove that stops my over-thinking brain and lets me forget myself. I love the relatable simplicity of the lyrics. They make me think of every time a sound or a smell has attached itself to one of my memories - it’s fascinating how strong that association can be, where I basically time travel in my head when I smell jasmine or woodsmoke, or hear a song I sang with an old lover, etc. I often attempt to write songs with complicated ideas behind them, but there’s no denying that sometimes simplicity is just the greatest. I also love how they captured the sound of raindrops. And the vocal melody is soulfully ingenious.
What does it mean to you to be a woman making music/in the music business today and do you feel a responsibility to other women to create messages and themes in your music?
I think it’s safe to say that women are still vastly underrepresented in the music industry (even more so with women of color and minority communities). From what I’ve read, most of the studies on this underrepresentation often focus on highly successful artists, the Grammys, etc. But I can say that in my personal experience as an independent artist, my artistic interactions are overwhelmingly male dominated as well. When I’m the only woman in the room, I’m happy there’s a woman in the room!
When I create music I let my thoughts and feelings dictate what I write. I don’t feel a responsibility to other women to create messages and themes, no. Instead I feel a responsibility to myself as an artist to create work that is honest, and to continue pushing myself to express my most private and personal thoughts and feelings. Given that I am a woman and experience the world as such, this is inherently tied up in my artistic expressions. I would hope for a world where all women are and feel free to express themselves openly and with authenticity. We’re obviously not there yet. It’s crazy how many feminine experiences are still considered somehow taboo.
What female artists have inspired you and influenced you?
Too many to list! Lately I’ve been slowly working my way through Kate Bush’s song catalogue… I’m caught up in her Aerial double album at the moment. It’s incredible. I tend to write very narrative lyrics, and I’m inspired by her ability to flash from enigmatic, mythological imagery into real life details. It’s hallucinatory. Recently I’ve also been drawing inspiration from Japanese Breakfast, Aoife O'Donovan, Madi Diaz, Phoebe Bridgers, CMAT, and Birdy.
Who's Your Favorite Female Icon(dead or alive) and why?
The Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is a female icon I’ve delighted in learning more about in recent years. I’d previously admired her beautiful, raw, symbolic paintings, but two years ago I decided to read her biography after seeing an X-Ray of my own spine. I have scoliosis and finally decided to get some physical therapy when my back pain became overwhelming. Seeing the X-Ray of my spine was upsetting, and after I cried about it for a minute I thought, I bet reading Frida’s biography would change my perspective and stop me feeling sorry for myself. I knew she had polio as a child, and then as a young woman she suffered and broken back and many other terrible injuries in a bus/trolley crash, leaving her in pain for the rest of her life. She took up painting while bedridden after her accident, and channeled the pain into her art.
Reading her biography I learned about the origins of her instantly recognizable personal style: she used fashion and her outward appearance to express her Indigenous Mexican heritage, essentially becoming a work of art herself. She challenged traditional norms of gender and sexuality, defying conventional expectations of femininity. Her paintings address deeply personal women’s issues and pain, such as her sexuality and her inability to carry a pregnancy to term, with shocking openness at a time when nobody was doing that. They also address her political stances and cultural heritage. The way she lived her life and created art is incredibly touching and inspiring to me.
Last year I had the opportunity to visit her house in Coyoacan, Mexico City, which is now the Frida Kahlo museum. Seeing her paintings up close, along with her her belongings (her wheelchair, her easel, her back braces and incredible folk style clothing), and walking through the rooms where she walked, gave me goosebumps. If you have the chance to go, I highly recommend it.
Do you consider yourself a feminist? If so, why or why not?
I definitely consider myself a feminist, now more than ever, since a woman’s right to bodily autonomy has been decimated in the US. I am lucky enough to live in a state where my right to healthcare, including abortion, is still intact, for now. But we should not be voting on whether women and their doctors get to decide what healthcare a woman needs and when. Our basic rights should not be on the ballot. Women should not have to wait until they are at death’s door to get the help they need. It’s barbaric, disgusting, and devastating. No one is free without bodily autonomy. It’s really tragic that we have to work to undo the same bullshit that our grandmothers and mothers already fought to change, but we must, and we will.
What do you hope to share with other women in the industry with your music?
My songs often end up being related to self empowerment and the rejection of what I’d call fairy-tale romantic ideas. I hope my little story songs will be a drop in the ocean of music encouraging women to choose themselves and their own needs - to express themselves freely and put themselves first.

There's no disputing Snoop Dogg's iconic status.
From that lanky kid from Long Beach in the early 1990s who shot to stardom (and infamy) as the biggest star on Death Row Records, to the venerated elder statesman who might be the most famous rapper in the world; Calvin Broadus is a blueprint for how to do rap stardom the right way.
His early hits set the standard for G-Funk, as Snoop's charisma and laconic drawl made him a superstar and took that Cali-based sound to the top of the charts. He took a turn down South in the late 1990s, signing with No Limit Records for what turned out to be a strong stretch to close the millennium, and he became a pop culture mainstay in the 2000s, scoring monster hits with everyone from Dr. Dre to Timbaland to, perhaps most notably, Pharrell and The Neptunes.

vinnie has some pretty terrible childhood trauma, from witnessing his mother overdose from a prescription pill to his father beating him and lydie
he started smoking cigarettes at the age of twelve, he calls them cancer sticks and exclusively smokes menthols
he thinks they make him better than everyone else

she is a very smart person, like she and pony are some of the smartest greasers regarding book smarts
she is definitely one of the more responsible greasers
she isn't respectful to authority but she is more kind to others compared to dallas for an example

she and dallas have full-on brawls
dallas will say something completely buck wild and she will fucking go off on him
throwing punches and slapping and just a full-on beatdown between the two at least until they're broken up
vinnie or darry pull them apart and make them apologize
lydie and dallas have a very complicated and complex relationship
lydie will say she absolutely fucking hates him
and dallas will be like "shes so wonderful"

VERANNO
my sweet baby
veranno is literally the dirtiest and most raunchy greaser out there
he is always in and out of jail, constantly getting into arguments and fights, and he's never quiet
never a relaxing time with him
veranno was born veranno gerard bianco in new york on april 27th, 1945 making him twenty years old
he is an orphan who was never adopted or cared for
he hangs around anywhere, in alleys, in ditches, in vans
he is everywhere
he mostly hangs around vinnie and his friends when he isnt in jail
like dallas, he has been in jail for squatting and breaking in several times
lydie writes to him all the time, especially when his stay is longer
he travels a lot, he visits nevada and arizona a lot, just to get away from tulsa
regarding what music he's into, he exclusively listens to chuck berry, elvis, and all of those fifties artists
he makes fun of people when he overhears them listening to bob dylan, the beatles or simon and garfunkle
he thinks they are "pussy musicians"
lydie will defend them so hard
dallas is very jealous of veranno and literally no one knows why
most people think it's because of lydie and how close veranno is to her
but dallas will deny it every time its brought up

10.ㅤ| a song of ice and fire : ㅤ the world of a song of ice and fire involves death, gore, betrayal, medieval like talks, fantasy talk as well mentions of incest, all will be present so keep this in mind. incest features heavily in the show and book so it will be mentioned.
11.ㅤ| changes: ㅤhere are a few of the changes regarding my sansa from show and even book. if you don't like, don't follow. and if you do, please respect the choices.
there will be no queen in the north arc here for sansa. it was poorly made, just to make all the female characters in the show the same girlboss girlkeep who know better than men. that's not sansa. sansa is lady of winterfell until jon gets a wife and hand of the king, taking a place in the small council of the north as well one of his trusted emboys.
no ramsay bolton arc either here. it was shady and awful how d/d waited until the actress was eighteen to film those scenes and literally steal another book character's storyline just to give it to sansa. after she escapes to the vale and takes on the alynne name and hears her brother jon is lord commander, bryanne finds her and she goes to the north, crossing paths with theon along the way, that tells her that they need to retake winterfell, as her friend jeyne is there, informing her who the "arya" in winterfell is.
sansa tells jon of the knights of the vale as cavalry. no need to create animosity or this sense that sansa doesn't consider him good at being king or commander when that's literally what he is.
sansa speaks up and approves of jon as king in the north.
when the truth of his parentage is revealed, she still claims he is a stark and the lords chose him, if anything, him being lyanna's child would endear them more to him.
she might, however, see this as another opportunity to push cersei off the throne. this is the one scheme she might see, with him being rhaegar's son and howland reed arriving with official papers that prove it.
sansa fixes one of the old castles up in the wall as a home for women in peril, with no husband, pregnant and alone or orphaned.
she might not be too warm about the idea of either aegon or daenerys coming to westeros, but she agrees that as long as the north and what robb gained in battle remains under their control, they can do as they please.
she is a princess now and has her title to use as leverage. despite not wanting to wed, she does use it as a way to get what she wants if they need more armies and lands.

daenerys is not fireproof. those conditions were made due to the blood magic, in both times she is seen surviving fire in the show. but targaryens are not fireproof, but she does stand heat more than others and runs warmer too.
she resides in dragonstone while travelling in the north to help with the white walkers. her eyes are set in dorne first as well the news of aegon, her supposed nephew's arrival at the stormlands.
she wants a peaceful surrounding of king's landing. while she might use her dragons to attack the keep, there would be no attack to the citizens of king's landing themselves. she is not aware of the wildfire unless she is informed by jaime or others who know.
daenerys can have children, however, pregnancies are difficult to reach to term and she has to be careful, the years of inbred and her own worries about the maegi's curse.
daenerys will give the north it's independence if they support her claim and another pact of ice and fire would be made at this time.
her biggest conflict is at the moment at dorne and their support toward myrcella as well quentyn's death tarnishing a potential alliance.
one of the thing that worries daenerys the most is putting all the effort to regain the throne but unable to produce her own heirs. so she has to stablish a good line of succession if she is unable to have an heir.

according to the drafts of the book in 1993 and 1994, the confrontation of drogo and viserys happens, and drogo kills viserys, dany is said to buy her time and eventually, kills drogo herself in revenge, after learning that drogo never intended to give them an army and basically "stole" and abused dany. she is joined in her escape with a few dothraki and her handmaidens and in a cave, she finds the dragon eggs.
I prefer the idea of dany finding the eggs or the eggs, finding her as well than just being gifted. a small change I do is that viserys is not dead, rather, he is alive, exiled, but he was left badly wounded by drogo. she still holds viserys accountable for selling her to drogo but upon seeing drogo's true colors and how he had no desire to help her and viserys go home, she snaps back to reality.
so this is not mad dany this is just dany reclaiming some of her power back and as in a hero's journey, her reward are the dragon eggs. she is found by the dothraki and tried to be burn alive with drogo's body and the eggs hatch at the same time as the book ends. the only difference is that dany doesn't have that many dothraki at her service. which i'm totally fine with.
