what is your “spaghetti donut AU?” it seems really cool
OUUUUUGH okay the best I can summarize without spoiling too much is basically I looked at Donut's numerous "deaths" and looked at a lot of weird lines from him and said this man is a horror movie monster (the og joke 'theory') And then it spiraled out to an AU where Donut is in fact a weird spaghetti monster that I am... still actively figuring out how he works BUT I can summarize with "what if the Thing and the carrion monster had the personality of Donut" and uh now he's a worm to me. forever. a worm (he is many worms but they all ID as the same guy so?) who's carrying around the world's most mentally ill ex-villains because it's hilarious. they;re all scared of him. he eats cat food and raw yeast and he is a man who will see a mouse and eat it. at some point I decided he was a cat before he got his hands on a human shape because his name is donut. look me in the eyes and tell me that "Franklin Delano Donut" is not the most cat name you have ever heard in your life. anyway hes sooooo normal [donut violence happening loudly in another room but i close the door with my foot]
I have sideblog for it where I mostly rb things that make me go ah yes the worms and I also have an ask blog but I have been a tired little boy lately

With all the discussion of CRWBY/RT's apparent obsession with heroic sacrifices in RWBY as of late (and how poorly framed/managed they are), a part of me can't help but wonder if they're trying to chase the high of Epsilon/Church's sacrifice at the end of Red VS Blue Season 13. (Here's the scene in question for context: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5jM_mrOqec) Which I will admit, I found to be a pretty good scene as a sendoff to the character and at the time thought it was a nice way to end the show. Though RT ended up souring it by continuing on with season 15.
Thank you for the clip! I obviously have no idea what RT's motivations might be regarding the prevalence of these sacrifices - is it "chasing the high" or is RvB just early evidence of a writing trend? - but regardless, I like this a whole lot more than what RWBY's been giving us. I think this has a nice balance between the somber, emotional soundtrack and the funny one-liners that sound like they're core summaries of many character's personalities (unlike Weiss who suddenly becomes the comic relief). I like that Church (if I'm right about how is speaking there) doesn't actually end with "...I hate you all the least!" but has his actual goodbye speech once he's privately recording. I'm missing a ton of the nuances of his argument, but I like that it at least comes across as thought out: he's reassuring the AI voice that he's sure about this, he lays out how the sacrifice will hopefully help the others survive, he acknowledges that he's only here in the first place because of them, and there's some element of being "held back" that this sacrifice would do away with. Finally, I LOVE the self-referential acknowledgement that heroes don't get to see if their sacrifice was worth it (which is one of the problems with having Penny die and then chat with Winter, or Ruby drinking the tea and then waking up fine in the tree: suicide presented as just a journey where you don't really lose your connection to life), ending with the blank screen. We don't get to know if they win either! We are emotionally connected to Church in this moment, experiencing the story through him, and like him we don't get the reassurance of knowing whether the others survived! (Well, until you hit Season 14, apparently lol). You've just gotta have faith that the sacrifice meant something - "aint that a bitch."
And all this, I want to stress, is coming from someone who has NEVER watched more than like two episodes of RvB,which I've now totally forgotten. This scene is the entirety of my context... and I enjoyed it. Which I bring up largely because of the Moistcritikal drama. Personally, I take issue with the idea that someone's negative opinion of a clip is unreliable because they haven't seen the rest of the show. Does that mean then that my enjoyment is unreliable too? Most RWBY fans wouldn't say so because, after all, why would you get mad about others agreeing with you? They're only up in arms because he was critical of the show, rather than praising it, despite both situations stemming from the same ignorance. To say nothing of the fact that criticism is dismissed even when fans (like me) do keep up with the canon, a ton of the side material, are immersed in fandom, and are present for every major development. Doing everything "right," apparently, still doesn't earn you any trust in your opinion, so... why was all that necessary again?
I do believe that context (for obvious reasons) can severely skew an opinion one way or another. For example, I recently saw a new Magnus Archives listener saying that although they were loving the podcast, it really took them out of it to try and believe that all these people just happened to write down perfectly composed, poetic narratives about their experiences. I so wanted to say that there was a reason for this. That, eventually, the podcast would reveal a canonical explanation for how this occurs, taking what's originally a huge aspect of suspension of disbelief - arguably to the point of annoyance - and reframing it as a major worldbuilding detail that enhances the enjoyment instead of detracting from it. So there are obviously cases like that, just like I might enjoy the RvB scene more or less depending on my experience with the rest of the show... but that doesn't mean my enjoyment now is wrong? Nor is Moistcritikal's lack of enjoyment wrong. I find the 'Oh, you just don't understand and you're willingness to speak on the topic without every scrap of information is insulting' to be, itself, a pretty insulting response. This desire to invalidate someone's honest opinion of what they've been given is an issue on its own, but beyond that, a good show should be able to read well even without the rest of the context. Hasn't anyone ever analyzed a clip of a show in school that they enjoyed? Gotten excited over an ambiguous moment in a trailer? Decided to watch something based on just a video/GIF-set here on tumblr with no other info? Good media is good even when you don't fully know what's going on and bad media will read badly without the distraction of already being emotionally connected to the show. Toss in the fact that people can pick up a fair bit of context from the scenes themselves and that Moistcritikal had fans in the chat explaining the situation. People can still look at a clip and think the dialogue is badly written, or the acting shoddy, or the animation poor, or the whole conflict - once explanations are given - to be pretty badly conveyed. None of this takes an intimate knowledge of nine Volumes to develop an opinion on. Moistcritikal might miss character dynamic details like Yang standing in front of a passive Blake to 'protect' her from her little sister, but he can still respond to the general gist of the situation and the ways in which it was executed.

Your entire claim of Kdin going "f*ck you, I got mine" is nothing but trying to vilify a trans woman as selfish and uncaring toward other LGBT people just because you hate LGBT people who make something you don't like. Qrow and Clover were never meant to be a couple. A trans character introduced in Volume 7 is far more trans representation that 99% of media. You're only trying to encourage harassment of a trans woman because she works on a popular, successful show that you can't stand.
her behaviour characterized her that way. her centring herself over the hurt & trauma of queer men was inappropriate & not okay, especially when queer men have explained that the in show & out of show behaviour of the characters & writers comes under queerbaiting. you guys could actually just listen to them for once instead of pulling a kdin & speaking over them. mkek knew what they were doing & eddy admitted it was queerbaiting that they justified with not wanting to spoil clover's death before sneakily changing his comment; stop cocksucking for a homophobic company. they don't care about you, they care about your money.
also actually i'm gonna address the "queer people make something you don't like", none of mkek are queer? kiersi might be but she never specifies & considering her writing of bisexual, nonbinary & ace people? she can get fucked. that shit was gross, it was harmful & her behaviour was scummy. rwby is not a "queer" project made by queer people, it was a painfully hetero project subscribing to the queerphobic mentality of queer rep must be earned by it's cishet writers. & we're 8 years in with only 2 queer characters on screen, out of the 6 or so that we have. wow, such rep. how good. so fascinating.
rwby wants all the accolades of actual queer shows without having to fight for it or actually knuckle down & show queer rep. mkek never had to fight a network like noelle, rebecca or dana did. they just chose not to have queer rep in for five years of the show because they know their audience of their "successful, popular" show are a bunch of neckbeard dudebros who came during their rvb & camp camp phase.
"a trans character introduced in v7 is far more trans representation than 99% of media" are you sure about that? a background character for the first volume & a half of her introduction & one major scene in v8? really? putting aside that trans women are the most likely to be represented out of the trans umbrella, feeding into rwby's habit of only exhibiting queer women — i wonder why — are we just going to ignore the various representations of trans women, good representations, even a whole decade before rwby came into existence?
i promise you, there is better queer rep out there, made by authentically queer people who just wanted to tell our stories. not money hungry, homophobic cishets who can't even be bothered to keep their rep on screen 99% of the time.

The last chapter of RBBR
It’s not necessarily the end-end, in an unknown amount of time I’m going to write a sequel but it requires structure... And time.
Thanks to everyone who was along with me for this weird journey. Namely @sharkface-daydreams and the rvb fanfiction legend Yin, both commenting on literally every chapter. Even back when I had the energy to update twice a week and threw constant curveballs in the story up until I had a a job training that sucked out all of my creative energy.
Uhh, I can give you some interesting tidbits in the meantime;
-This whole thing was a really, really late jump into the rvb fake season meme.
- @sharkface-daydreams was technically right.
-The original title was going to be ‘Worst Duty Station’ and even now the chapter documents in my googledocs is labeled that.
-Sergeant Major * (Walla L. Walla, or Walla L. Major) doesn’t know what the L. in her name stands for. All she knows is that her original name started with that letter. She, and by extension the rest of Humble Team, were mentally conditioned to forget their original names.
-If Lupus gave himself a combined name like O'Malley and Gary did, he would choose "Lobo" (Loco and Caboose) to fit in with the whole wolf theme. I didn’t put it in because he already has two names he’s constantly jumping between in the narration.
-Flash cloning brains is still illegal in the UEG, however Chorus is no longer under the jurisdiction of the UEG/UNSC. Even so, in season 17 episode “Schrodingin” Dr. Grey shows that she has no qualms about committing major fraud as long as she can help a patient.
-Major Washington’s command partnership with Simmons is severely stunted because Wash is still dealing with his current condition, and he’s having a hard time coping with his memory loss and mood swings. This has caused him to lash out constantly at Simmons helping him, even though listening to Simmons plan would probably improve the quality of his life when dealing with his current disability.
-Dr. Grey didn’t adopt just Detective Apollo, she’s stated she  “taken a few wards”. Mathews is one of those wards, as Dr. Grey is one of the few people left on Chorus who knows sign language. The Rebel Medic is another one, granted she’s a little bit older than Mathews and Detective Apollo (both are sixteen, Rebel Medic is close to 18).
-On the same vein, Palomo is President Kimball’s ward. She was going to take in Jensen as well, but Jensen refused because of the ‘foster sibling’ implications.
-Volleyball, McCallister, and Ghanoush are all between 18-21.
-Bitters, Andersmith, and Randy are actually pretty close in age to the Reds and Blues, only being in their mid-twenties. (Kaikaina is the youngest, but she’sin her early-to-mid twenties while the main group of the Reds and Blues are in their late twenties to early thirties except for Sarge and the Freelancers)
-There’s context clues throughout the entire story hinting at some weird shit that hasn’t been said yet and that’s all I’m saying about it.
-Sergeant Major has only been banned from Fort Drum. Don’t get me wrong, she does have an extensive record of Article 15′s and Court Martials, and a lot of stuff that would get a regular soldier either kicked out or thrown in jail, but Detective Apollo was definitely embellishing when she first met her and “praised” her “accomplishments”.
-Sergeant Major is definitely a potential physical threat to most of the Reds and Blues because she is a Spartan-III, but always remember that Caboose absolutely could crush her like an empty soda can and chuck her all the way across the canyon, and she knows that.
-Lupus/Loco and Caboose have a very emotionally and mentally intimate relationship, but they are not romantically involved.
-While Detective Apollo’s brain damage condition is very similar to Caboose’s just worse, her relationship/reliance on her A.I is a little... Different.

Saw someone complaining and saying that we probably won't get more rvb zero because the fandom didn't like it as if that's a bad thing
Like A) most of us would be thrilled if that happened bc we didn't like it
B) it kinda makes sense that if the fandom hated it they wouldn't do more, like if it was just a small loud part of the fandom it would be understandable if they still went on, but when the majority of your fandom is saying they didnt like it and even the ones who did like it said it wasn't that funny then you may have an issue
And C) this person is putting way too much faith in RTs ability to actually listen to their fans, chances are they probably will do more rvb zero despite how the fan base reacted to it

Writer Questions
Thank you for the tag, @zqua1d!
1. When did you start writing?
Almost exactly two years ago.  I’d never done any sort of individual creative writing prior to writing Compartment 451.  Crazy how random that was and how much it’s changed my life.
2. What fandoms do you write for?
Exclusively 1D, specifically ziam.  I’ve had people ask me if I would ever consider writing for another fandom, but I just don’t have it in me.  Not now, at least.  Every idea I’ve ever had (written and saved in my ideas doc) has been inspired by ziam as individuals - either because I’ve wanted to explore a specific characteristic of theirs or because I had an AU setting that I’d love to see them interact in.  Can’t say I’ve had that for any other fandoms/individuals.
3. Do you write better in the morning or at night?
Night, hands down.  Writing is my “full-time job”, so I can pretty much create my own hours.  I go through phases, but for a majority of the year, I’m usually nocturnal.  I like the darkness and the solitude.  The silence is a plus, but I think it’s the ‘in my own world without distractions’ sort of thing that gets me.
4. What music do you listen to while writing?
I’ve gone through phases with this too.  I wrote C451 with instrumental film soundtracks playing throughout, then with Kick, Push it was primarily lo-fi music because of Zayn’s character.  Since I knew that I was going to write Z.A.Y.N. after The Prince King, I listened to a CRAZY amount of r&b during the latter.  Listened to that all the way through both.  As for the last three stories posted online, I don’t remember listening to anything in particular.  The book that I just finished that I unfortunately can’t post, I used Korean ‘Study with Me’ videos on YT.  Highly, highly, recommend.  This one and this one are my two favourites.  I work like crazy, so these are great if you’re like me and enjoy tracking how much you work/ can create a good schedule when you don’t have an external source (office, class, etc.) to give you one.  OR, if you can’t sit down and study/write on your own accord, this would be good for you to build in breaks and good habits.
5. What do you/plan to major in at college?
Fuck, what didn’t I major in in college?  I’ve got a BA in Film/TV Production Management and Geography (specifically urbanization and the middle east).  Then I’ve got an MSc in Management (specifically international corporate strategy) and an MA in Creative Writing (specifically fiction, novel writing).  In the Fall (unless I move to Sydney, then next Feb-ish), I’ll be starting a PhD in Creative Writing which will be looking at masculinity, ‘the city’ in the novel, and the presentation of male-centric mental health in literature.  All wrapped up in a novel I’ll be writing for the program.
6. Do you write an outline before writing a story?
If you asked my workshop classmates that question, they’d just burst out laughing.  It was an ongoing joke about just how much I outline/plan a story.  For reference, Red vs. Black ended up being ~113k, but the outline document I had for it was about 25 pages on its own.  My outlines look a lot like a VERY detailed bullet note list of points that need to be touched on in each scene.  If you want a look at my lil baby one for C451, click here.  This is soooo bare bones compared to what they look like nowadays, trust me.  Each scene nowadays would probably have about 10x this many bullet notes and timings and all that.
7. Do you write multiple stories at one time or only focus on one?
NEVER.  I have to stay with one at a time.  My stories have so many tiny intricacies and details that need to be given my entire attention to unfold correctly.  I fully throw myself into a story; I get lost inside the world and characters much like an actor does.  I have to in order to make everything consistent and more importantly, true.
8. Do you write every day?
Yes!  It may not be for a novel, it may be academic papers or applications, but I do write something every day.  Also, it may not even be original writing, but I count editing sentences as writing.  You have to engage your brain in a similar nature.  You have to manipulate your native language and just...words.  That’s writing.
9. What are your goals for your stories? (& do you want to become a published author one day?)
Well, my summer goal is to get my latest story a publishing deal.  As most of you know, it’s currently sitting with Harper Collins, but I really don’t expect anything to come of that.  After that (inevitable) rejection, I’ll be shopping it around to agents, so I’d say that’s my latest goal.  Eventually, I want to publish Kick, Push, The Prince King, and The Heart of Him with lots and lots of rewrites.  Clearly copyright would make publishing Z.A.Y.N. as it is impossible, but I think the way it’s presented and the two characters that live within it are kinda cool.  I’d have to rewrite all the lyrics to be original and obviously change Zayn’s name to something that could fit with the title being an acronym.  (Zain/Zayn was a true blessing for that)  Plus, a lot of the magic falls with the songs that come out of their relationship and the hints that I gave to them throughout.  An original song wouldn’t be something a reader could do that with.  So, yeah, it’d be a stretch.  With Red vs. Black, I’ve been given some professional (let’s say) advice telling me to rewrite it with a different metaphor other than superheroes.  I see where he’s coming from in regards to sales and a publishing deal, but then I’ve also had another, professional (let’s say), from a different sector of the field tell me that it’s fine with storyline, but that if I’m trying to sell it in novel format, it might not work.  So, that’s going to take some reworking/deep thinking on my end.  And as for Customer of the Month, I’d like to adapt it as a YA book.  I think the message rings the clearest for that age group.  Which of course means, more rewrites beyond simple edits.
10. Favourite work of yours?
Besides the one I’ve just finished, I’d say Red vs. Black.  It’s really fucking complex if you take a step back and look at it on a character level and not a ‘ziam fic’ (same with COTM.  Zayn’s character in that one is actually really fucking heartbreaking).  It took so much precise weaving and timing and development, that finishing it was a massive accomplishment for me.  I’m glad people enjoy it, but honestly, coming out of it, I remember thinking, I don’t even care what people take from it, I’m proud of me for pulling that the fuck off.  It’s got NOTHING on the book I just finished (so you can imagine the self-pride I have for that), but given the fact that I’d only been writing for a year, RvB was a huge accomplishment for me.  I also really fucking loved writing Zayn’s character in that story - his humour, his turmoil, his arc.  It was a massive challenge, but I actually enjoyed it and that’s huge for me.

Top 5 Things I Liked About Red vs Blue: Season 2
(Top 5 Dislikes)
One post down, one more to go… and then twenty-six more to go for the rest of this series. Why did I decide to do this again? Meh, whatever. Let’s just get on with it as we resume looking over Season 2.
#5. Machinima
Tumblr media
Okay, this might sound weird, but hear me out. The machinima last season was… basic. Not bad mind you, there is only so much that you can do without a lot of creativity and resources. Resources that RT didn’t have at this point in time. But mostly, they just went through the default motions. Nothing really stood out. It had some cool stuff, like them somehow managing to blow the Warthog on top of Red Base. I think they even said in the commentary that trying to replicate it for the remaster was a pain in the ass. Still, it just didn’t stand out, though the humor made you not notice.
Clearly, the RT guys wanted to push themselves a little more now that they knew how Halo operated and they could machinimate better. Which they did. I noticed a lot of little things when watching the season. Like having Caboose jumping up and down during the opening gunfight while behind a rock, or even Doc just pretending to fire his blaster. Or having Simmons more or less trembling in the finale when his… ugh… fax parts act up and you can tell what Grif is staring at when he questions it. Or adding in things like Lopez’ note in the finale, and even having it written in binary. Heck, we even have smoke come out of Grif’s helmet when Simmons catches him in the act.
These are small things, but it helps make the world and characters feel a little more alive. Clearly, machinima has its limitations, and we’re a long way away from them adding in animation. But creative people will find a way to work within their limitations, and even use those limitations to their advantage. Considering how long this show has been going, I’d say that they succeeded.
#4. Caboose’s Mind
Tumblr media
One of the most memorable parts, and one with some actual effects on the characters, is when Church and Tex go into Caboose’s mind to kill O’Malley. It’s one of the weirdest, yet funniest parts of the season. We get to see how Caboose views everyone, with Tucker being stupid and Church being obsessed with being Caboose’s best friend. He gets them wrong, but it makes sense because it’s how /Caboose/ interprets these individuals. They aren’t supposed to be accurate. It’s especially funny when we see the Reds and only Simmons is close to right Grif is Yellow (which they outright did to prove that he was Orange to viewers), Donut is a girl since that’s what Caboose thought at the time, and Sarge has a pirate accent instead of a Southern one.
It’s just funny to see Caboose, who at this point had been portrayed as the most dim-witted, and how he views these people. It kinda reflects what he wants with Church being his best friend and the Reds fearing him and his greatness. His ideal version of himself is pretty much a cool version of himself, though otherwise not too different. Church’s reaction and frustration at all fo this, especially Caboose!Church, only makes it funnier as is Tex being unfazed by all of it. It did kinda throw me off when I watched it the first time, but God it’s funnier on rewatch now that I know what’s going on. It’s a nice look into Caboose’s mind, and we got to see glimpses of the others int he S14 episode Head Cannon.
I think the biggest things though were for one, we got a location that wasn’t Blood Gulch finally. Sure it’s pretty much a standard video game map with a bunch of cubes, but after having the only setting be a canyon, it was refreshing. We also have some major impact with this since due to all the chaos, Caboose’s character becomes what it is now. We can debate all day how we should view Caboose and his intellectual level, but I do think that this helped endear the character to people and allowed him to stand out much, much more. Even now I know very few people, if anyone, who dislikes Caboose so while maybe they should acknowledge that he was more or less brain-damaged, the character himself has become better due to this. Which is nice~
#3. O’Malley Subplot
Tumblr media
Speaking of Caboose’s mind, the O’Malley plot was by far the standout in this season. At first, it wasn’t too much since only Tucker cared about Caboose’s sudden murderous behavior. But once Tex came back, things picked up. While the backstory wasn’t totally accurate, it would certainly lead to more ahead. The fight in Caboose’s mind was fun. Tucker got to show some genuine competence when he came up with the plan to make the Reds turn their comms off and even using Lopez as a backup plan. With how much more competent Tucker grows later once circumstances pretty much force him to, this was an early sign showing that he is capable. He just needs to be pushed into doing it.
O’Malley himself didn’t stand out too much, just being kinda murderous. Then he escaped into Doc. I’ll go more into this next season, but this was the best decision ever. Doc is a whiny goody-two-shoes while O’Malley is gleefully, over-the-top evil. The contrast of the two personalities works super well and is just really funny to watch, though again it applies more for the next season. By the end, O’Malley makes his move and firmly sets himself up as the first proper Big Bad of the series, and he’s the perfect villain for the Blood Gulch Chronicles.
Overall, the whole subplot was really fun even though it did kind of have a slow start. It brought back Tex, had some really funny moments like the Reds' reactions to Lopez’s horrible love song. At least Donut liked it, haha~ It gave us our first proper villain, which led to one Hell of an insane finale. Even everything in between with Donut getting captured by the Blues and them trying to use this to make Sarge build them new bodies was fun to watch. The first half of S2 s super fun, but the second half is, without doubt, the best part for me. O’Malley was the catalyst, and to this day is one of my favorite villains. Love it~
#2. Improved Production Standards
Tumblr media
Season 1 was good but flawed. It was clear that the RT guys weren’t really sure what they were doing. Audio quality was meh, jokes could drag, and the pacing was rather slow. It makes sense though when you read about what the original plans were. RvB was meant to be a miniseries, and nothing more. But pretty much a combination of them not getting to what they planned as soon as they thought (Donut was supposed to be in pink armor much sooner for example, and they realized how long it was taking to get there) as well as just coming up with more ideas extended things to a nineteen episode run. So there was no long term plan and things like writing and machinima were done in mere days in between releases. Plus there were only two main machinimators, Burnie and Geoff, and if you listen to the original S1 commentary they are both clearly exhausted. Burnie even said on a one-on-one podcast with Geoff on how they had pretty much had every conversation ever and they’d be like some old married couple just staring at each other. You can find it here if you’re interested, it’s a fun one~
So yeah… when you look back you can kinda tell that S1 was a bit of a rush job, and a tiring one at that. It’s still very good and like I said, they found ways to use so much you barely notice things were made up on the fly. But clearly, they needed a better system. Enter Matt Hullum. He had already been voicing Sarge, but he ended up stepping in to play a larger behind the scenes role. He joined Burnie on writing and directing, and thus they started planning things much farther ahead. As such, they knew the general plot and thus things could be tightened. The pacing is much better with episodes feeling faster, but having plenty of things happening. I already talked about the machinima improvements, which having Matt as well as Gus coming back from Puerto Rico also helped there. The voice acting, while still amateur, improved as well as the audio mixing. The filter is still a little distracting, but it and the general audio mixing is greatly improved. Pretty much every aspect of S1 was improved big time. It wasn’t perfect, but still, they clearly put a lot in creating a more quality product.
Season 2 had a hard job. Season One had to prove that this was a show worth watching. Season 2 had to prove that it could keep going and wasn’t just a one-hit-wonder. And ho boy did they. It’s funnier, it’s more ambitious, and even starts adding in some story. This season got the viewers from last time to come back, and probably brought in some new ones. It proved that this was a show that was sticking around and that RT had staying power. If this season failed, RvB would probably just be remembered as this funny Halo show. But it succeeded because they wanted the show to keep succeeding and be good, and that effort shows.
#1. Improved Characterizations
Tumblr media
The thing that I enjoyed most about Season 1 was the character interactions. They just had natural chemistry and their interactions were funny. The characters themselves though were a little one-note. They had personality, but they didn’t really stand out when you compare them to other comedies like The Simpsons or South Park. I guess that RT realized this as well because this is where the characters really begin to become the same ones that we know now. Not all of them mind you like Simmons and Tucker are the least fleshed out here, but even then the signs of who they would become are there with things like Simmons clinginess to Sarge and the joke about Tucker’s rock, as well as the previously mentioned show of competence when pushed.
Donut and Grif show more of their personality, with Donut expressing his hobbies like home decor and growing to like his lightish-red armor. Grif shows his more lazy slacker attributes, like sleeping during meetings and forgetting the ammo, and his unhealthy habits like smoking and his constant eating. Which he’s pretty much doing intentionally to annoy Simmons and mess up the parts that he got from him. Lopez also got a lot of personalities now that he can talk. Namely, after the Reds nearly kill him and the Blues use him for their own means, he hates them all and his apathetic personality has stuck ever since. Poor guy has had such a hard time, haha. And I already went into Caboose, so there's no need to repeat myself. Even Shelia got sassier this season~
The one I think got the most improvement though is Sarge. In S1, he was just kind of a standard sergeant character you could find in just about any military movie, and the voice reflected it. Here? Matt just goes off the wall. He said in the S2 commentary that Sarge is pretty much the combination of various 50’s character tropes, like the grumpy old guy and the mad scientist. It shows. Sarge’s hatred of Blues and love of warfare are much more evident, especially in the finale. His hatred of Grif is also much more played up. We see that he is absolutely insane with his conspiracy theories about Lopez being brainwashed by the Blues instead of reprogrammed and turning Simmons into a cyborg instead of just getting a new robot. Sarge is the opposite of sensible, and having this guy be the leader and forcing everyone to follow his plans due to it is freakin’ hilarious. Matt exaggerating the accent from this point on only adds to this characterization and is much, much more fitting.
The characters, in my opinion, are the best part of Red vs Blue. This season demonstrates that very well. Unlike S1 where there were only shades of their later portrayal, this one uses broad strokes. I think some of the better voice acting can also be due to this since the cast now has more of a character to fool around with instead of just having to more or less act like their everyday selves. The characters were stronger, and as such the interaction and humor were even better. As such, it is my favorite part of Red vs Blue Season 2. Can they keep it up in Season 3? Well… we’ll find out soon~

I just got done watching Stranger Things 2 and I have this to say!
Why is there no Camp Camp/Stranger Things AU yet? I’ve seen bits of fanart here or there, but I mean a full-on AU. And if there aren’t enough Camp Camp chracters to go around, include a few from some of Rooster Teeth’s other productions, like Red vs. Blue (I still need to watch this BTW, but from what I’ve heard about Felix, he could make for Dr. Brenner, which adds parallels to David because Miles Luna), Ten/Eleven Little Roosters (for potentially spoiler-y reasons), I guess The Strangerhood (which I only know about thanks to TV Tropes), hell even X-Ray and Vav, maybe. I even have a basic character layout, undercut because of spoilers:
And yes, it still takes place in the 80s.
Max - Eleven/Jane Ives-Hopper
Neil - Mike Wheeler
Nikki - Dustin Henderson (especially in ST2)
Nerris and Harrison - Lucas Sinclair and Will Byers (This one is a little harder to figure out. If you haven’t guessed by now, the Stranger Things party is based on Quest for Sleepy Peak Peak. Harrison and his yet-to-be-named younger brother have some parallels to The Vanishing of Will Byers that sets the entire show into motion, but Lucas is the only Party Member with a younger sibling. Someone help me figure this out.)
Jasper - Barb Holland (dies early on to give motivation to a major character, we absolutely loved them nonetheless)
Felix (from RvB) - Dr. Martin Brenner (Again, I actually don’t know a lot about RvB, but I will watch it soon. Until then, someone tell me if him or Cameron Campbell [or Daniel, but Daniel wants to serve the evil, Brenner wanted to kill it, I think] would be a better choice)
Xemug - The Mind Flayer
Ered - Max (maybe)
Snake - Troy
I need more help figuring this out. Like what role will David, Gwen, Daniel, and Jen play? In the meantime, I’m gonna keep listening to “When it’s cold, I’d like to die” and continue to contemplate if I’ll watch RvB before or after christmas.)

The Search (16/16)
Disclaimer: Red vs Blue and related characters are the property of Rooster Teeth. Warnings: Language, Canon-typical violence, Psychological manipulation and trauma Rating: T Synopsis: [Canon Divergence - Alternate S15] The Reds and Blues saved Chorus, but it has been a year and they are still missing. A motley crew has been gathered with the common goal of finding the war heroes, though the road is more troubled than anyone seems to realize.
A/N: Another year, another season of RvB long, long out pacing my writing of an alternate universe. And the more that my worldbuilding skills get a bit of a kick in the shins. Hopefully, you all enjoyed this installment because I absolutely loved and appreciated hearing from you all throughout the publication of this fic.
Thank you all so much for the support, the patience, and just in general the fun.
Special thanks to @secretlystephaniebrown, Yin, Lardo137, and # for the comments and feedback!
When Will It End?
She wasn’t expecting company. At least, that was what she told herself as she sat on the ledge, staring at the small projection before her. With her helmet on her lap, the AI’s form was lower than his usual eye level, but it felt, somehow, more personable that way. She could almost drown out the words that Epsilon was saying and pretend that it was in real time. Not frozen forever in a message she had purposefully neglected to open for so long.
Carolina told herself she hadn’t been expecting company, because she almost never allowed her emotions to be worn so clearly on her sleeves. She almost never let the stray tears fall from her cheeks without recourse.
Truthfully, she had desperately wanted to be found before she got to that point. But she hadn’t, so she let the tears and emotions come as she finally listened to the brother she hardly knew’s words.
His last words. For her.
“Closure kinda sucks, because that means things are over. And, well, if you’re anything like me — and we both know, you kinda are — you’re really really bad at admitting when things are actually over, Cee. Over — closure — it’s like the end of a whole world. I should know. I spent a few months inside my own brain ending a few of them. Long story. I probably told you at least twice about it, probably on a long night where neither of us could go to sleep. Let’s just say, a memory file degrades just like a memory memory over time.
“And… I didn’t want to admit it. That it was over. That we would eventually be over. But sometimes life sucking fucks, and you don’t get to make those calls before it’s too late. And I’m… still a memory. Good or bad one, I don’t know. I don’t know how you tell which kind of memory you are. I just know that I was happy to be a memory with you, with the Reds and Blues and Wash and… Well, especially you. My time was kind of short. But, hell, aren’t all memories?
“I just knew… I had to have an ending sooner rather than later, whether I wanted it or not, so I tried… I tried to make it count. I hope it did. No. I know it did. I have faith that it did. That’s the reason I’m making these final files. Sending them out. Having faith that you’ll have another day where you can see it for yourself. Final sacrifice and what not. Heh. Who would have guessed it from a selfish prick like me?
“I guess… I guess at the end of the day, maybe you did. I know it sucks. I know it’s going to hurt. And I hate it because, well, we know each other, Cee. You’re…. you’ve inherited the stubbornness that makes an ending hurt for a good, long while. I’m sorry about that.
“You don’t like goodbyes. You don’t like endings. But I was there, I saw when you sought one out for you and York. I know it hurt when you realized you didn’t have it. Not really. So I’m giving you one. I’m giving you an ending to this. Us… If there’s some kind of digital heaven… or, well, realistically a digital Hell, I know I’ll miss you. But giving you an ending means something beautiful, something I didn’t learn for so long. Ending one chapter can take you to the next one. And, Sis, you deserve a new chapter. You’re a hero. You saved a planet. If that doesn’t get some red off your ledger, fuck the ledger.
“I love you. But, I bet you already knew that. You, and the others, are the greatest family someone could ever have. And I’m honored to always be in your memories.”
Squeezing her eyes shut, Carolina pinched the bridge of her nose and let out a long, breathy exhale she had been keeping in her lungs. She was still making no effort to hide her tears, even when she new that her wish had finally, belatedly, been answered and someone was standing on the roof behind her.
Washington was hesitant, or perhaps just respectfully distant, before he slowly came around to her side. He lowered himself to sit beside Carolina and remained somber and silent for the majority of it all.
Carolina continued to sob, because the words were the most true things she had ever heard. She didn’t want things to be over. She had spent the better part of a year searching for anything but the ending or closure to their journey. She was waiting, anxiously, to lead everyone around her right back into the loops they all had been stuck in for years.
Epsilon over her shoulder, guiding the way.
Which meant there was no reason for her to listen to his last message to her. Because it wouldn’t have been.
But the search was done, the living had been found, and what was left for Carolina was an ending she hadn’t asked for, hadn’t wanted.
And very few proper people to punch left for her.
“I thought it wasn’t over… I thought… To me, it wasn’t over. It wasn’t for the longest time, and that… that was what I wanted,” Carolina admitted to Washington without prompting. “Is this how…. This shouldn’t be how it feels. The end. I’d rather not feel it at all.”
Wash quietly wrapped one arm around Carolina’s shoulders and held her close as she continued her babbling. There weren’t any comments, but then again, after nearly a year of him trying to warn her of what finding answers might mean, maybe he just didn’t have any left to share.
Carolina leaned into the half hug and inhaled sharply again, not yet over the weirdness of having her emotions so naked and revealing to anyone around her.
But, she supposed, if it was around anyone, she was glad it was with Wash. Even if that was selfish, even if she knew, deep down, that the relationship he shared with Epsilon was far more nuanced and dark and hurtful than her own.
He still didn’t say anything on it. At least not in that way.
Instead, Washington waited until the worst of Carolina’s tears were dried, just rubbing and squeezing her shoulder from time to time.
“I’m such an idiot,” Carolina growled at herself, unable to even look in Wash’s direction. “We… we saved them. We found them and saved… all of them. And I know more than anything else, that’s exactly what Epsilon would have wanted me to do. He practically told me to start a new chapter without him. But I… I still the whole time was thinking of finding him, too. I didn’t think that if we lost anyone… that if we lost anyone it would be him… God. I’m such an idiot. I’m such—“
“Missing people you love, no matter how long it feels like it’s been… it’s not something that makes you bad, let alone an idiot,” Washington assured her. “And it’s not like we knew for a year that we would find everyone but Epsilon. We…. well, we didn’t know who we’d find.”
“You knew,” Carolina reminded him darkly. “You tried to warn me—“
“I did’t know, Carolina. No one could have known,” Washington corrected her. “I wanted you to be… I don’t know. Ready for the possibility. I… I wanted us all to be ready — as much as any of us could have been — for learning the absolute worst. Because I knew I wasn’t going to be.”
Carolina looked at her oldest friend and watched the exhaustion in his eyes. It was like looking into a mirror.
“Thank you… for being the person we all needed at some time or another,” she thanked him softly.
“I try,” Wash half joked. “Though… Well, I wasn’t as close to Epsilon as the rest of you. So… I know I can’t really be the person you all need right now… But the one thing I can say for sure is that… you’re not the only one missing him. And, when you’re ready, I bet you’re not going to be the only one who needs to talk about it before completely starting a new chapter.”
Carolina nodded quietly. “Yeah. Yeah, you’re right. I should…” she stopped for a moment and looked back at him. “Do you really think it’s time for the new chapter? For a whole new story? I mean. We’re still outlaws. Chorus is still in rebellion against the UNSC. We still… y’know. Had a hand in the death of the Chairman.”
“It’s something to worry about later,” Washington assured her. “Right now? We worry about what matters — each other.”
“You know you’re my best friend, right?” Carolina asked.
“Emotional break through. I recorded it. You’ll never be able to take it back now,” Wash joked.
“I already take it back, that was a mistake, you’re just my subordinate,” Carolina teased back.
“Nope, I told you, no take backs,” Wash said before turning the side hug into a more proper embrace. “Thank you for being our pillar. We found everyone alive because of you and your perseverance.”
“Thank you for being my second in command. I didn’t strangle anyone on the team because of your intervention,” Carolina said back. “But you’re right. I do need to get down there and…. be there for the others. At least to talk.”
“Your forte,” Wash said seeping with sarcasm.
“Hey now,” Carolina warned. “I’ve not had as many chapters as you yet. Give me time to learn how to spend my time standing around talking and doing nothing. It takes practice.”
“Yeah it does,” Wash laughed, getting to his feet and offering Carolina a hand.
She took it and pulled herself up.
It hurt, the idea of closing on a hope, a dream. But her family — Epsilon, Wash, everyone — were right.
It was time to keep moving.
“And that concludes my report, Missus President.”
Dylan looked up from her laptop screen, ignoring the hum of the machines around her bed keeping her stable. Or the fact that they were living in the damn future in space and she still had to deal with the ridiculousness of patient gowns not really having a back of any sort.
Surely someone had had the time to develop some breakthrough in medical wardrobe.
But that was a report for another day.
At the foot of her bed was the large and imposing president of the Independent Planet of Chorus, former General Vanessa Kimball. And, at the moment, highly scrupulous protector of the Reds and Blues by her own account. For the time being, Dylan’s investigative instincts did not compel her to investigate otherwise.
“That’s what you’re thinking of submitting to your paper?” Kimball asked suspiciously. “An exposé with that amount of inflammatory content, particularly toward the UNSC and endangering relations with the Alien Covenant? Your editor won’t want you to lower the blast radius on that gun?”
Somewhat surprised, Dylan Andrews only blinked a few times before shaking her head definitively. “My editor? No, no. I’m afraid you misunderstand the situation. I took off on a long journey without any clearance or supervision, was spotted with and accused of being an accomplice to fugitives, and personally broke into several computer terminals that were probably not, legally speaking, clear for me to mess with. My career through Interstellar Daily is about as thoroughly fucked as it can be. I’m going to be posting this directly to my personal website and contact a few of my fellow reporters who would love to report on me reporting this. Taking the proverbial bullet as you will.”
Kimball was wearing a helmet but Dylan liked to think there an impressed look hiding behind the visor. Then again, pragmatically she knew better than to weave fiction with her reporting.
“You have already taken enough bullets for this story by almost any measure,” Kimball said flatly, head tilted slightly toward Dylan’s side that was still thoroughly bandaged and sore.
Almost instinctively, Dylan tenderly put her hand on her wound. “Well, true as that may be, I don’t believe things worth reporting don’t also come with some great amount of risk,” she replied. “I live for reporting these things. And punishing anything less than the truth would be unethical by my estimates.”
“Hm. With that kind of attitude, I have to wonder how tabloids get started,” Kimball hummed slightly.
“Same way freedom fighters can’t always weed out all of their anarchists,” Dylan answered. When Kimball didn’t immediately answer, the reporter began to squirm some in her bed, making her jerk at the pain of her side. “I was… ah, trying to say you and Chorus are the freedom fighters and the UNSC is wrong to label you as anarchists—“
“You didn’t appear to me to be particularly dull-witted, Miss Andrews. I assumed the best,” Kimball assured her.
“Oh! Well. Good. You should have… I just. Have a real difficult time reading people who are wearing full helmets,” Dylan admitted. “Which is… somewhat ironic considering my company for this excursion.”
“That is exactly why I make excuses for wearing a helmet as much as possible,” Kimball answered. “Now, your story more than has the support and approval of me and my people. I’d say with a quick proofread from either Agent Washington or Agent Carolina you would have the approval of the Reds and Blues as well. Then you could… well, publish it any way you decide to.”
“Great,” Dylan said, fingers tapping on the flat of the laptop, chewing on her lip. “I do need one favor from you if you don’t mind, though. I don’t think this story can really be over until I get it.”
“What’s that?” Kimball asked sternly.
“I need someone to wheel me into Siris’ room for an interview,” Dylan said. “He ties some pieces together I feel like we don’t have yet… and without them I don’t know how much outreach into the UNSC itself we’ll have.”
The request made Kimball visibly apprehensive, but it was an agreeable enough set of terms.
Before Dylan could fully process everything, two of Kimball’s guards were putting her in a wheelchair and pushing her down the hall toward the other recent patient of the ICU. Two other guards were posted at the door and seemed only convinced to move and let them in once they saw the President herself was with them.
“Mister Siris,” Dylan spoke up as they turned the corner into the room. “I have some questions for you about… your part in… all of this…”
It should have felt like more of a surprise to her when they turned the corner and saw the empty bed, bloody sheets dragging from the bed to the open window.
“What!?” Kimball screeched, turning around to face the guards who were rushing in. “Put the city on alert, make sure there is no one flying off the planet! The damn mercenary escaped! I refuse for Chorus to lose a single other life because of goddamn mercenaries!”
In the commotion, Dylan was left in her chair, looking out the window, fingers lightly curled over the keys of her keyboard in her lap.
During the chaos, she began to slowly stroke one key at a time.
The report is not yet over. Just like the dangers we all face. But, we can hope, that wherever we are left at the end of our journey, the truth is found along the way.

Theory Time: RvBS15E17
MAJOR spoilers for the latest episode (quicksave).
couple things: i think that it’s possible wash will die from that shot. HOWEVER, i do not think it will last. now there’s the possibility of using his healing unit with the help of vic, but there’s also loco’s time machine, which has yet to come into play. the obvious idea is that temple will use it to go back in time to prevent biff’s death, but we know that will get interrupted.
i think that the reds and blues will somehow manage to get access to it, but how? well there’s something else that’ll come into play: donut, who’s been acting odd ever since he was put in the jail cell. he’s been mute, which is odd considering donut’s personality, and additionally: he forgot how to use a grenade. now, when it comes to the reds, everyone has a specific role. sarge is the leader, simmons is second in command and maintains the base, grif is the driver, lopez is the mechanic, and donut is in charge of grenades. this is shown in both the blood gulch chronicles and the chorus trilogy, specifically in season 11. makes donut forgetting how to use it even more weird, right?
so here’s my thought: the blues and reds knew that the reds and blues would manage to escape so they planted cronut in place of donut in captivity because they knew the reds and blues wouldn’t notice (remember donut thinking of himself as a “fabulous ghost”?). locus then mentions that the blues and reds likely evacuated and left a “skeleton guard” to keep watch. ghosts and skeletons are closely related, but then caboose mentions ghost towns immediately afterward. now, in the scene before we encounter temple walking into the “dug out” prison, cronut is with them, which you’d think that the theory falls apart BUT there’s a little bit of time inbetween the two scenes, as they had to go and get grif out of the vent he was stuck in, which probably took a bit of time.
enough time for the blues and reds to put cronut in the prison in place of donut, who wasn’t seen being escorted by sarge and surge into the jail cell with simmons, tucker, lopez, and caboose after the truth of the blues and reds was revealed. weird omission right? we saw donut with them before, why suddenly was he excluded? did he manage to escape? or was he taken deliberately? this is the same episode where donut refers to himself as a fabulous ghost and how he thinks he’s always forgotten. we also know the blues and reds have cameras everywhere. they could’ve heard this and decided to take extra steps in ensuring the reds and blues wouldn’t foil their plans so they replaced donut with cronut. how does this play into the time machine? well, the reds and blues will eventually figure out the truth about cronut one way or another, which would perhaps lead them to question cronut about the blues and reds, who they are, what their plans are, what the machine is. and when they figure out what the machine is? they’ll use it to save wash. let’s look at the episode title again: quicksave. on the surface, it appears this references locus finding/saving carolina and wash relatively quickly. however, when you look at what quicksaving actually is, things start to make more sense. courtesy of know your meme (i know, but listen):
Quicksaving refers to a video game feature that allows players to save their progress with a single keystroke or command as oppose to going to specified saving zone, checkpoint, or options menu. Moreover, the ability to quicksave enables the player to repeatedly attempt something difficult from the same point. Online, people use “Quicksave” as a catchphrase to express that a dangerous and/or ill-advised action is about to take place.
now rvb isn’t a stranger to time travel (although, the time travel in season 3 is heavily disputed, rightly so), specifically with wyoming’s time distortion. now we know the blues and reds have been recovering technology from project freelancer, as shown with the armor lock used on carolina and wash, so what else do they have access to? the tech from wyoming’s time distortion to create a full time machine. this will likely make the reds and blues think about who they should save once they have access to it (possibly with the help of loco, who has been showing signs of not being entirely happy with temple’s leadership, and his openness about the machine with caboose). the two people are obviously wash and church, but i think they will decide to save wash, who never had any intent on dying, while church was at peace with his decision.
so now where’s donut? well, in order to figure that out we should also ask where’s lopez? ever since grif and locus reunited with the reds and blues, we haven’t seen lopez once. just offhand mentioned. so what happened to him? his body wasn’t with the reds and blues in their prison cells. now it’s possible he’s still on locus’ ship but it’s unlikely since there wouldn’t be any reason to leave him there. i’m not gonna lie, i have no idea where donut could be, but his disappearance along with lopez makes me worried and i think it’s worth bringing up amidst everything with wash.
there’s probably a million flaws with this theory but this is just my current thought process. i’ll say before i close this out that donut and lopez being on most of, if not all, of the marketing this season had to have been a very intentional choice from the jump.
guess we’ll have to see next week. 😰

Episode 4 of RvB season 15 is here and I just want to scream because of all the emotions I’m having. Ican’t remember since last time I was so full of happiness and happy tiers ;u;
I probably should wait until I have calmed down so my dyslexia wouldn’t screw up grammar but waiting would make forgot what I wanted say
1. Well that’s a way to start an episode. I’m sure majority of us were able to call bull shit on Jax’s death because the whole scene was so cheesy. Gotta give them points though
2. I may or may not have given my parents a heart attack when I noticed that Dylan was talking with Chorus babes. First I didn’t recognize them until Andersmith called Bitters by his last name. Also JESSEN CALLED PALOMO BY HIS FIRST NAME. Well them becoming a couple has been canon since season 13 but it makes me so SO happy!!! And they’re all safe and sound. I’m so relieved ;u;
2.5 Gotta love the “Law and Order” reference xD
3. The beautiful mad scientist Dr.Grey is also ok and she her normal mad self!! Listening Grey and Dylan talking was interesting and really enjoyable. Two different but yet similar people talking is always such a joy to listen (especially when written right)
4. Dylan is married? And they have furry babies at home! That’s interesting.
Listening them talking was painful. Especially watching the episode for the second time. The series seem to continue with some what broken couples
5. KIMBALL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND SHE’S ALSO A PRESIDENT!!! That is so AWESOME and I’m happy for her. I admit that I was 60% surprised about this even thought title like that suit her very well.
So Santa is her “bodyguard”, huh? That’s actually a really good idea. I thought he’d be with Caboose but being with Kimball is good too. She’s in a high position now so she must have top security (I’m sure she have had to deal with some “lovely” people after what happened on Chorus).
She called Santa her friend. My heart!!!
6. Jax didn’t leave!!! That scene reminded me about Wash and Donut
7. The last part of the episode was a reference to the second latest Star Wars movie, wasn’t it?
I’m so glad that Reds and Blues are ok. I was so worried about them. So next time we’re gonna see them all again? Well Dylan has already had a good start with them (poor Caboose) so I’m sure the meeting will go “smoothly”. Yup it totally will.
I have a feeling that Wash and Carolina aren’t with. Not sure why but I just have that feeling. Welp better get tissues ready because I’m sure epsido 5 is going to make me cry like a waterfall

Oh my god I am crying you're an rvb fan too????
Yoooooo buddy, hell yeah I am! Watched when it first came out like in the early 2000's, stopped when I hit college bc it got too hard to keep up with, connected with Rooster Teeth content through "YOU THREW IT AGAINST THE WALL LIKE A WET PAPER TOWEL," and then a good friend got me to rewatch RVB. Haven't been the same since. And like, I'm bout to rock your WORLD. You should check out my tags #rvb and #red vs overwatch on this blog because they have a bunch of crossover content in them. Part of the reason I was drawn to Overwatch was how similar the humor and "plot set up" was to RVB - Overwatch's plot and lore and character interactions basically seem like they could be an RVB arc, just with different characters. I'm a massive supporter of giving Reaper, Widowmaker, and Hanzo like Tex, Meta, and Agent Washington redemption arcs. And I probably shouldn't PR myself but my fics have a ton of RVB references - some obvious, some more lowkey: How We Were Made (Reaper76 - explicit): my interpretation of SEP is basically a direct reference to Project Freelancer. I think even in my google docs draft I have a comment like "Did I steal the idea of a scoreboard from Project Freelancer? ...Yes. Yes I did." Old Habits (Reaper76 - T - action/adventure): plot is just getting started but the Intro has Vic's closing monologue from the end of Season 14. Later on, I reference "Contact Redux" and the Mercs. There are other numerous references planned (I'm so using "And I...am a motherfucking ghost" at some point. I may or may not have a transcript of Epsilon's "Love is like a good memory" monologue for...something). I'm also a huge fan of meshing Overwatch's actual battle gameplay with RVB-style action and fight scenes, soooo that happens. A lot. Non-RVB stuff, but still RT: I reference Mirror Mirror at one point. I'm sure I'll use "It's also a gun" SOMEWHERE in this crazy plot. Also like. 80% of my humor these days are Achievement Hunter quotes. If I don't work "It's not gonna break" into a scenario where Genji axe-kicks Jack's desk, I will have personally failed myself. I love Rooster Teeth and the vast majority of their content. I have the Fake AH Crew posters. There are prints of the Blue Team, Carolina, and Tex right next to my Overwatch and Reaper posters. I listen to some of the different OSTs like a few times a week. Truth be told though... I'm really just waiting for Camp Camp season 2.

Top 5 Dislikes of Red vs Blue: Season 1
(Top 5 Likes)
So back a few months ago, in the lead up to RWBY Volume 7, I did a Top Likes/Dislikes list for all six volumes. I also did this for RvB Seasons 16 and 17, so… why not do it for the other fifteen? Especially with RvB18 on the way? Not only gives me an excuse to rewatch everything, but I get to have some fun~ So I will be covering RvB seasons 1-13 and 15. S14’s is gonna be a little bit different. But anyways, we’re gonna begin with the one that started it all, Season One~
Honestly though, critiquing Season One is hard. Mainly because this was a season made when RT was just a back bedroom with mainly Burnie and Geoff doing the machinima. We’re a long way away from RWBY-level quality. In the Blood Gulch Era,  it was just a bunch of friends making dumb stuff. Quality dumb stuff, but dumb nonetheless. So the five Dislikes are honestly minor and I don’t even really consider them bad. If anything, they show how far the show has come. So take the Dislikes list with a grain of salt, ut I needed to do it for the necessity of the list. So then, let’s get started~
#5. Not Fully Fleshed Out Characters
Tumblr media
This is on the bottom because it’s really not that big a deal. The characters are kinda just somewhat exaggerated versions of the people that Burnie cast. They certianly have character, but aside from really Matt with Sarge, it’s just the cast playing exaggerated versions of themselves. It does kinda stand out because here, the characters don’t really have any defining personality traits or roles. We know a few things like Simmons being a kissass to Sarge, Grif is more out of shape, Caboose is a little dim-witted compared to the other Blues, etc. But when you look at all the future seasons, the lack of fleshing out is very noticeable. Especially for characters who are nothing like they were here, like Donut. I mean I don’t think he spouted even one innuendo here, it’s weeeeird.
Like I said though, this isn’t that big of a deal. The characters still have character and are still funny, it’s just clear that they hadn’t been fully developed. It’s a first season of what was originally meant to be a comedic miniseries and is very forgivable in that regard. It’s honestly fun to rewatch this season and then say Chorus and see how far the characterizations have come. Still, it is a tad noticeable and I needed five picks, so I’m gonna put it here. But again, it’s honestly fine. As is our Number FOur pick…
#4. The Voice Acting
Tumblr media
These guys, aside from like… two or three of them, were not actors. They hadn’t done a bunch of material like they have now either, so this is again very forgivable. But it does make the voice acting lover in me kinda cringe when I hear it. You can tell that they’re trying, but as I said, this was still in the early days when no one really knew what they were doing. The one who did the best were either already actors (Joel, Yomary) or had more of a character to play with (Burnie, Matt). Everyone else, as I said, was pretty much given an exaggerated version of themselves and I think it kinda shows in the voice acting. They were all okay, but compared to their later performances and when they are given more characterization, this was not their best work.
But again, this is not that big of a deal. This was the early days and as I said, you can tell that they were trying. I think ti honestly adds tot he charm of early RvB. A bunch of friends making dumb stuff with a video game. I mean Gus outright recording his lines over the phone while living in Puerto Rico, he and the others were clearly dedicated to this thing. It’s not the stuff of legends, but given the tone of Blood Gulch, it works. It’s a dislike because like I said, it annoys my voice acting loving self and it’s weaker to their later performances. But still, it’s very enjoyable… even if some of the voices some chose are kinda jarring. Speaking of…
#3. Sarge’s Voice/Not Fully Fleshed Out Character
Tumblr media
This one is super nitpicky, but it bothers me! We all know Sage and his overly exaggerated Southern accent, right? Well… in this one, he is much, much more subdued. Like I said, the characters weren’t fully fleshed out and so Sarge isn’t quite the same as we know him now. The voice reflects this. Here, Matt plays him like a stereotypical Nasty Drill Sargeant. IDK why, but the voice just… bugs me. I guess it’s just because I’m so used tot he current one, but it jarred me so much I had to check if Matt had been the one doing the voice in Season One. Sure enough…
Yeah, this one is very nitpicky and again reflects how I don’t feel the characters were very well fleshed out. I mean even comedic wise, Sarge didn’t really stand out and was really just there to give Grif a hard time. Even his hatred of Blue isn’t really there. Fortunately, this would be fixed in Season 2. Every time I look back at this though, it just takes me out for a minute cause ‘OMG this is not the Sarge I’m used too!’. So a nitpick, but a dislike nonetheless. But hey the fact that this is a minor issue speaks of how much I enjoy this season, haha!
#2. The Afterlife Scene
Tumblr media
OH GOD THIS SCENE! IT CONFUSED ME ALMOST AS MUCH AS THE S3 TIME TRAVEL SCENES DID! ALMOST!
So… Blood Gulch is very weird. I mean it had Ghost Church, is this a surprise? But that wasn’t even the weirdest part of this season or even the entirety of the Blood Gulch Chronicles. No, that honor goes to this scene where, after Caboose shot Sarge when Church was possessing him, Sarge found himself in the afterlife. Church and Shelia are also there. Now, fortunately, Sarge comes back via Grif using CPR… on a bullet wound… yeah… but God this scene was the first time the show made me go ‘WTF am I even watching?!’ especially since unlike Chruch’s ghost thing, it never comes up again. Church having been an AI the whole time didn’t help.
Now I know it kinda got explained later as part of Recovery Mode, but it still leaves a lot of questions. Why was Church there? He got kicked out of Sarge’s body when he got shot. Maybe he went back in hopes of making it work? IDK. But maybe we can just say that since Church was possessing Sarge, he left some kind of trace and the Recovery Mode picked up on it. Cool… then why was Shelia there? Sarge wasn’t even at the canyon when Shelia was unleashed. Did Recovery Mode pick up on that from Church too since it was so recent? I guess that makes sense? And yeah I know that when they wrote this Church wasn’t intended to be an AI so maybe it really was the afterlife, but that’s no longer a possibility, so… AAAAHHHH!!!
Yeah… this is why I don’t try to think through Blood Gulch stuff too much. Doing so does nothing except make my brain hurt when I try to go over how it makes sense in canon. Don’t get me wrong, the scene was funny especially with Grif and Simmons trying to revive Sarge. Kinda feel bad for Grif for getting scolded when he just saved Sarge’s life, but it’s Sarge. Of course, he would. I also like the more muted colors int he afterlife and the weird wavy effects with the scenes in the world of the living. It’s a funny scene, just one that hurts my head whenever I try to make sense of it. Stupid me and my stupid need for logic…
#1. The Audio
Tumblr media
This was by far the biggest thing I noticed, including back when I started this back in 2017. The audio is… not good. I think this might help explain some of the amateur voice actings because half the time, the filter effect distracts you from the performance. Now I actually do like them using the filter since it makes sense that they’d use mics int heir helmets to talk, but I think that they tuned it up a little too much here. The whole reason they did this was to hide the fact that people like Gus, Jason, and all the guys in California had to record their lines over the phone. It’s one of the better decisions that they made, but like I said, in this season it is super distracting.
The only thing maybe worse is the mixing when it comes to explosions. There are a lot of explosion effects in this due to all the guns, grenades, and tanks. They are loud. Really loud. Like I remember watching the scene where Church dies. I was watching it on my laptop with headphones and I had the volume at a fairly modest time. The explosion noise made me jump. It can sometimes also overpower the voice acting like I think there were a few times I couldn’t fully make out what the Reds were saying when Shelia was firing at the end. Add that tot he voice filter and… yeah.
The audio wasn’t bad. Like I could tell what characters were saying. The effect was just distracting though and clearly they needed some work on audio mixing. Which they, fortunately, did by the next season. I think Burnie even mentioned how annoyed he got at the constant complaints about the filter int he Season 2 commentary, but hey he listened! Still, for Season One, it was by far the thing that annoyed me most and while I know it’s because they didn’t have quality equipment, it still distracts me when I rewatch. So it’s going to be my Top Dislike for Season One.
Final Thoughts
As I have tried to make clear, I don’t view any of these as major issues. Heck aside from Audio, IDK if I’d even say I disliked them. Thrown off by them sure, but not outright dislike. It honestly helped the show I think. It’s certainly mature and kinda crappy work, but it added to the charm and appeal to the show. It’s why they still use stuff like and photoshops, it’s endearing. Even with the improved production quality and while they have maintained a lot of what made RvB such a fun series, the original seasons still have this unique charm that despite how stupid it is, you just wanna tune into it over and over again. So these may be Dislikes, but they’re ones to be proud of. But hey I’ve still got plenty of Likes to talk about, so stay tuned for that~
