Discharge Petition for H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Record Group 233: Records of the U.S. House of RepresentativesSeries: General Records
This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. ‭John 10:1-6 NKJV‬
[1] “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. [2] But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. [3] To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. [4] And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. [5] Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” [6] Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.

1) A Study in Scarlet
(Back to main post)
Originally titled "A Tangled Skein"
Sherlock Holmes was originally "Sherrinford Holmes" with partner John Watson originally "Ormond Sacker"
This is the book that first established the magnifying glass as a tool used by detectives to solve crimes!
Page from the original manuscript:
Tumblr media
First Published in Beeton’s Christmas Annual November 1887
Tumblr media
Extra Information:
founded by Samuel Orchart Beeton
Beeton’s Christmas Annual was sold to Ward, Lock & Co publishing
ward lock n co founded by ebenezer ward and george lock
Had three works:
"A Study in Scarlet" by A. Conan Doyle, pp. 1–95.
"Food for Powder" by R. André, pp. 96–114.
"The Four-Leaved Shamrock" by C. J. Hamilton, pp. 115–138.
Copy once sold for $156,000 at Sotheby's on 21 June 2007, estimated 75,000-125,000 USD
Original manuscript was rejected by other publishers until Ward, Lock & Co offered and accepted £25 for the copyright
(equivalent to £3,371.95 considering inflation)
he got no royalties, just a flat fee - eventually had to pay two hundred times the original price of sale to get the copyright to that one story back.
Conan Doyle wrote back to ask for a percentage on sales. Here is the publisher's answer of 2 November 1886: Dear Sir, In reply to your letter of yesterday's date we regret to say that we shall be unable to allow you to retain a percentage on the sale of your work as it might give rise to some confusion. The tale may have to be inserted together with some other in one of our annuals, therefore we must adhere to our original offer of £25 for the complete copyright. We are, dear Sir, Yours truly, Ward, Lock & Co.
illustrated by David Henry Friston
this sold originally for one shilling
ward lock n co then republished this outside of beeton’s christmas annual
Lippincott’s magazine commissioned a sequel:
The American editor of LIPPINCOTT'S MAGAZINE read it and decided to commission a sequel. He invited Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to dinner at a London restaurant with the editor and another writer he was trying to court, and during the course of the evening Sir Arthur agreed to another Sherlock Holmes novel and he went home and wrote THE SIGN OF THE FOUR, and the other writer, who was Oscar Wilde, said, "Oh, yeah, sure, I'll give you a short novel," and he went home and scribbled out THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY.
A STUDY IN SCARLET sold for (the equivalent of) $2,951.39 and ran 43,704 words. Six and three-quarters cents a word. SFWA rates are five cents a word.

THREE FICS TAG GAME
Thanks for tagging me, @chriscalledmesweetie!
Rules: We would like to ask you to recommend us 3 of YOUR fics: 1 that is “most popular” and 2 that are “hidden gems!"
Most popular:
Technically this is Indefinite Lines, but I feel like that's cheating because it's long as hell and still posting. For completed fics, I'll go with:
Tumblr media
To Stand Before the Storm John and Sherlock investigate a series of murdered sheep on an uninhabited Irish island. What could go wrong? I attribute this fic's popularity entirely to Lucy the sheep. ❤️
Hidden Gems:

Monsters in the Woods
by ArwaMachine
A FTH fic for @discordantwords With gorgeous cover art by @kettykika78
Chapters: (see below)/16 Rating: Explicit Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence, (not Major) Character Death Relationships: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson Summary: John isn’t particularly sure why he took the counselor position at Camp Baker Stream, an American-style summer camp for rich kids. He isn’t fond of the wilderness, nor is he fond of kids. He also isn’t sure if he’s fond of his cabin-mate, a strange bloke named Sherlock Holmes who seems perpetually on edge and more than a bit of an arse. It certainly doesn’t help that apparently the camp has a sordid past—a series of gristly murders that took place eight years ago, perpetrated by one James Moriarty. Sherlock seems convinced that the events of the past are doomed to repeat, but that idea seems to fall in the realm of the impossible. That is, until camp counselors start going missing…
Inspired by every 80s slasher flick that is so bad it’s good, this fic merges summer camp horror tropes with the BBC Sherlock universe, adding a sprinkle of smut for good measure!

Matchmaking for Solitary Animals
by ArwaMachine
Chapters: 13/13 Rating: E Relationships: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson; Sherlock Holmes/OMCs (but don't you worry...)
Summary: Upon moving back to Baker Street following Sherlock’s return from the dead, John finds that Sherlock is a bit more keen on entertaining gentlemen callers than he once was, a fact that seems to make John irrationally angry. Intent on proving that he’s not a total dick, John decides to make it his mission to find Sherlock a boyfriend. This, as it turns out, is the worst idea John has ever had.

My #1 post of 2022
Things not to think about in regards to the John Balloon:
Tumblr media
1. This balloon is filled with helium. Unless Sherlock just happens to keep a canister of helium in the flat (which we maybe shouldn't put past him), John had to go to a shop that sold helium balloons. He asked the shop-keep for one balloon. The shop-keep asked him which color he wanted. He chose red. Then he walked back to Baker Street from the shop, holding his single red balloon all the while.
When he got back to Baker Street, he had to hunt down a marker. Nothing with too sharp a tip--he wouldn't want to accidentally pop the balloon. Just a nice felt-tip marker. Then he drew some approximation of his own face on the marker. He's not exactly an artist, he knows, but he wanted to capture himself in some way, the way he looks when Sherlock is being brilliant. Then he found something heavy enough to tie the balloon to as it sat in his chair.
All because he thought Sherlock doesn't really care if he is there when Sherlock is working.

Minoan Kingship and the Solar Goddess
A Near Eastern Koine
Author: Nanno Marinatos
An illustrated guide to Minoan images and symbols
Publication Date
Paperback: 09/01/2013
ABOUT THE BOOK
Ancient Minoan culture has been typically viewed as an ancestor of classical Greek civilization, but this book shows that Minoan Crete was on the periphery of a powerfully dynamic cultural interchange with its neighbors. Rather than viewing Crete as the autochthonous ancestor of Greece's glory, Nanno Marinatos considers ancient Crete in the context of its powerful competitors to the east and south. Analyzing the symbols of the Minoan theocratic system and their similarities to those of Syria, Anatolia, and Egypt, Marinatos unlocks many Minoan visual riddles and establishes what she calls a "cultural koine," or standard set of cultural assumptions, that circulated throughout the Near East and the eastern Mediterranean at the time Minoan civilization reached its peak. With more than 150 illustrations, Minoan Kingship and the Solar Goddess delivers a comprehensive reading of Minoan art as a system of thought.

According to the review of the book by British  classical archaeologist and art historian John Boardman (https://muse.jhu.edu/article/472181 ):
“Of all ancient civilizations, the one we might most cheerfully assign to invasion from outer space is the Minoan. It had no obvious antecedents in Greece and no real following, except for the short period of Mycenaean takeover. Arthur Evans, who discovered the Minoans at Knossos, drew the more obvious comparisons with the arts and religions of the East and Egypt—none terribly close and wholly overworked by a culture that viewed its arts and their messages in a way quite unparalleled elsewhere, and intelligible to us only because its practitioners were not little green men but a rather special breed of Homo sapiens. Their religious apparatus was peculiar to them (double axes, horns), and the personnel humanoid, but for a demon that owes a little to Egypt. Religious scenes bear slight resemblance to those of southern or eastern neighbors, and the strongly individual style of figure and animal drawings as well as scene composition is particular to them. Nanno Marinatos, daughter of the most vigorous Greek explorer of the Minoans, has worked this area before, but her new book places them more persuasively in the context of their neighbors, as well as of their own idiosyncratic view of the world, than as forerunners of the classical—which is quite inconceivable. Yet to include them in a “Near Eastern koine” stretches the idea of a koine almost to bursting point. They were the children of their age, as were their neighbors, but more dependent on a strong individuality of approach and vision, perhaps promoted by their physical remoteness from the Levant and Egypt—a remoteness they bade to reduce by travel, as had all occupants of Greece’s relatively sterile land, and in this respect alone foreshadowing the behavior and achievement of their successors there.”
