i love william riker.
i love him for so many different reasons, but he's just so.
and there are ppl out there who's like "no he's a predator!"
but that is simply not true.
like, yes, he is sexual.
yes, he's in tune w his sexuality.
yes, he knows what he wants.
but every time there's a um, sensual scene w him he ALWAYS gives the other person an opportunity for an out.
if his partner is in anyway hesitant, or just blatantly not into it, he will stop, and pretend like nothing happened in that moment.
every scene, there's an opportunity to say no, and we all know he would immediately back away.
and think abt 1x03, the naked now? when deanna came to him he knew that she was intoxicated, and he knew, w/out a second thought, that he needed to get her to sick bay, and get her safe. the thought of taking advantage of her never crossed his mind.
no matter what deanna did, what she 'wanted' he rejected. bc he knew that would mean he was taking advantage of her.
point is, if u think will rikers a predator, just leave.

The top 31 spookiest Star Trek episodes (according to the Internet)
Tumblr media
It's spooky season and I'm also a Star Trek nerd and a list nerd, so here we go!
Tumblr media
I asked in a Star Trek discord, ran a bunch of searches, and assigned a point each time an episode was listed among the scariest/creepiest in Star Trek. The episodes are ranked from least to most spooky, so watch in this order if you want to build up to the spookiest stuff. I cut off the list at 31, one episode for each day in October.

** PRO did not make an appearance on any of the lists I found, so I selected an episode that felt most appropriate. Other series only had one suggested episode and are in the list by default.

watching tos for the first time since like, roughly 2012/13-ish? i don't remember what year it was, or why i only got thru most of season 1 before stopping
it's been fun to refresh my swiss cheesed memory with this tho so here's a semi-liveblog of the first 10 eps that i watched over the past couple weeks
1x01 - the man trap
things i remembered beforehand:
salt monster
"plum" uwu
that gay little run and crawl jim does when he's taking cover (it fills me with such delight)
things i did not remember:
how many people died, good god man it's only the first episode
1x02 - charlie x
things i remembered:
jim's bright red exercise pants
that stupid fucking face charlie makes when he uses his powers
not liking this ep at all when i first watched it, possibly due to me being around the same age as charlie at the time
additional thoughts: i enjoyed it more this time and felt more sympathetic for charlie. poor kid needed some parents, and also, like, a hug
1x03 - where no man has gone before
things i remembered:
bones isn't in it :'( (bored) (sad) (missing my bestie)
"James R Kirk"
that post i saw on here recently about how their contacts were made of glass
the only thing i could think about while watching:
their contacts
were made
of GLASS
(yes i understand this was how contacts were made back then. still freaked out by the concept of people putting glass in their eyes on purpose)
1x04 - the naked time
things i remembered:
sweat disease
sulu fencing
oh kathleen
"ONE-MORE-TIME!!"
"love mankind"
spock breakdown (extremely uncomfortable to watch)
bones casually ripping jim's shirt sleeve to jab him in the arm (extremely hilarious every time i think about it)
did not remember:
anything about them almost crashing into a planet lol
jim's little monologue when he gets infected (lmao)
time warp???
additional thoughts: hey remember when they reused this plot in tng and tasha and data fucked (<- literally the only thing i can remember about it) ((edit from future fex: i rewatched that ep. it was wild. tos did it better tho))
1x05 - the enemy within
things i remembered:
unicorn dog :)
evil kirk and poor little meow meow kirk
"I'M CAPTAIN KIRK!!!"
things not remembered:
dog dies :(
evil kirk's killer eyeliner
additional thoughts: say what you will about shatner / his acting but this ep is Peak shatner performance and a lot of fun to watch. he put his whole pussy into it, as the kids say these days
1x06 - mudd's women
things remembered:
could not forget harry mudd if i tried
the women are color coded like the powerpuff girls lol
they're also like, on some kind of drug that keeps them looking young or something
cool costumes tho
i don't have much to say about this one lol, harry's a fun character but the rest of the ep wasn't super interesting to me. did finally learn how to pronounce "ophiuchus" tho so i'll thank it for that
1x07 - what are little girls made of
things remembered:
is this the penis rock episode (it is)
uhhh i think kirk gets put into some kind of spinny machine that makes androids (he does)
more cool costumes (debatable)
things i find funny:
the number of planets we've encountered so far that are populated by like. 2-4 people
the way ruk (the big guy) just picks up and throws kirk like he weighs nothing
so much buildup with kirk and the penis rock and he doesn't even get to hit ruk over the head with it smh
also not a funny moment but i liked the way kirk was able to get a message to spock thru the android kirk, v clever
wait i just realized bones wasn't in this ep either. deducting 1/4 of a star from my mental rating bc i missed him (but apparently not that much)
1x08 - miri
remembered:
planet of children (bc everyone else died of terminal puberty)
"no blah blah blah!"
bones tests his newly discovered, untested cure on himself, in true mad scientist fashion (also spones moment <3)
saw this ep on a "what's your fave 'bad' episode" poll here recently and i can't remember if i thought it was good or bad when i first watched it lol
forgot:
another earth?? there's just a second, identical earth floating around out there?? and (of course) they don't mention it at all for the rest of the episode
300 year old children
oh these kids are so much more annoying than i remembered, however i may just be biased bc i don't like kids shfkshfk
1x09 - dagger of the mind
remember:
absolutely nothing! oh boy!
thoughts:
wow this ep is fucked up!
okay actually i don't think i've seen this one at all before?
usually there'll be moments that jog my memory but the only thing even slightly familiar to me was kirk going "helen don't go!" while in the neutralizer chair, but i could've just seen a clip/gif of it before
i remember skipping episodes in season 1 (i was impatient and wanted to get to city on the edge of forever) but i thought i'd at least made it to halfway thru the season before skipping any
anyway did i mention this ep is fucked up? (star trek really does love to drop an absolutely haunting 50 minutes of television on you and then never address it again, i understand this now. roll credits!)
1x10 - the corbomite maneuver
remember:
uhh
there's a thing out there
it's in the way
preventing them from boldly going, even
looks like an old windows screensaver
i might've skipped this ep too now that i think about it
thoughts:
cute mckirk moment in sickbay :3
i love that this cube has its own theme music whenever its on screen
oh shit it's the sequel to cube: orb
jesus christ that's a big orb
man they really said "okay we've got 3 music tracks and we're gonna get our money's worth out of them"
i gotta say this ep slaps tbh—WAIT HE'S A BABY???
LITTLE BABY MAN
LMAOOOOO
honestly great episode tho i'll stand by that

[tv review] ds9 1x01-03 (1993)
1x01 & 1x02 “emissary”
the general consensus on season 1 of ds9 is that it’s bad & boring, and like, in a way fair enough? but there’s also just absolutely no comparing it to season 1 of tng, so i oftentimes find myself resisting this take even though it’s kinda totally fair.
still, this larger narrative actually has zero bearing on the show’s pilot episodes. this two-parter was pretty easily the best star trek pilot ever at the time given that its only competition was either tos’s “the cage” or “where no man has gone before” (or both, depending on how you wanna count it, idk) and tng’s “encounter at farpoint.” among its contemporaries i also think it definitively edges out voyager’s “caretaker,” though not by nearly so wide of a margin. i think it’s since been surpassed by the first episodes of virtually every installment of nutrek, minus the last ten minutes or so of both of discovery’s first two episodes. but regardless, this is just a fantastic two-parter and a great way to pass the torch from tng.
linking sisko’s backstory to picard and the most celebrated episode of tng was an especially shrewd move, and having the two of them initially butting heads was a great way to differentiate sisko immediately. not that he actually ended up needing the help considering how strong his characterization is and how amazingly avery brooks plays him throughout the series. on top of that, like… as a star trek fan, it’s just undeniably satisfying to actually finally get to see some of the carnage at wolf 359 instead of just the aftermath.
beyond that, this two-parter had so many characters to introduce and so much to set up about the setting, and i think it pulled all of that off admirably. a-rank
1x03 “past prologue”
i 100% agree with the decision to swap this episode in as the first episode after the pilot instead of that episode where odo is being oppressed for being a cop. like, even leaving my personal & political feelings out of the equation, kira is just blatantly the more important & interesting of the two characters, and getting her & sisko on something resembling the same page feels like the most important thread that needed picking up after the pilot.
moving this episode up also helped reiterate the importance of bajor and the wormhole both to the show’s narrative and to the politics of the universe, so kind of a double whammy of obviousness there.
… also also, although it’s inexplicably his only appearance in the first season, this gets us to my problematic husband garak sooner, and that’s obviously very important. his interactions with dr. bashir (and others) in this first appearance are just fucking priceless, and this show will always be better off the more garak it has in it. and this episode is fully like 50% garak insinuating that he’s a spy, bashir pouncing on it like an overeager puppy, and garak denying it and making bashir feel silly.
it’s gonna taper off soon, but ds9 season 1 actually gets off to quite a strong start all things considered. a-rank

The Naked Now
So I just rewatched TNG 1x03 "The Naked Now" and gosh, that was truly an Experience. There are so many things in this episode that are completely episode-breaking on their own, and they just keep coming and coming.
Just the fact that they thought the second episode was a GREAT episode to make everyone act out of character, before they've established what people acting in-character looks like.
It's a copy of "The Naked Time" down to having Wesley playing the part of Lt Riley who takes over engineering while drunk, nearly causing the destruction of the ship.
"R*pe gangs"... No. Why would you make this poor actress deliver those lines? 😖
"Fully functional"... Nope nope nope.
Data sleeping with a woman who is very obviously drunk. HELL NO!
Troi calling Riker "Bill".......
"Doctor, there must be a cure, some kind of formula. Huh-huh-huh-huh-huh." (The subtitles rather generously label this as throat-clearing. ????) What the heck was Patrick Stewart going for with that?? Why didn't the director stop him???
Like, I would put this episode in non-canon jail for any one of these offenses, and it has all of them.
Not like there weren't good things about this episode too (Worf's face when he realizes the guy at the console next to him has the disease is just so perfect).

TNG Guide: Picard/Crusher Edition
Someone did a guide like this for Elliot and Olivia from Law and Order and I’ve been thinking about these two lately so here we are.
This guide is obviously coloured by my personal opinion and some of the things are really subtle, but there’s also way less to get through here than something like SVU.
Of course, there are still many good episodes of TNG that don’t revolve around Picard and Crusher, but for the purposes of this guide, I tried to stick to the important ones or ones with some good interactions. Also, feel free to suggest things I may be missing.
SEASON 1
1x01/02 - Encounter at Farpoint
1x03 - The Naked Now
1x05 - The Last Outpost
1x07 - Lonely Among Us (This is on here for one scene really)
1x09 - The Battle (This one doesn’t really have moments between them as much but it’s got some good Picard backstory)
1x12 - The Big Goodbye
1x19 - Coming of Age (Again, mostly here for one scene where Beverly is being interviewed)
1x21 - The Arsenal of Freedom
1x24 - We’ll Always Have Paris
Due to a conflict between Gates McFadden and a writer on the show, Beverly doesn’t appear in season 2. It is said she took the position to head Starfleet Medical on Earth. However, due to a huge fan campaign led by Patrick Stewart himself, Gates came back in season 3 and stayed for the rest of the series.
I’d suggest watching 2x17 - Samaritan Snare as it gives some really good Picard backstory, but for P/C purposes, that’s the only one that’s necessary.
Season 3
3x01 - Evolution
3x05 - The Bonding (No moments here exactly, but the themes present are super important to their relationship)
3x12 - The High Ground
3x18 - Allegiance
3x23 - Sarek (This is here for the mind meld scene, which I think speaks to their relationship, but is also one of the best scenes in the entirety of Star Trek)
3x26 - The Best of Both Worlds Part I (This is mostly here for a specific brief scene, but the events of this episode really affect Picard so it’s important)
Season 4
4x01 - The Best of Both Worlds Part II (Here for continuity purposes)
4x02 - Family (No specific scenes but the storylines here are very much important)
4x05 - Remember Me
4x09 - Final Mission
4x20 - Qpid
4x21 - The Drumhead (This is here specifically because of the trial scene where Jonathan Frakes made some really interesting directorial choices)
4x23 - The Host
Season 5
5x12 - Violations (Massive warning for what is essentially mind rape in this episode)
5x18 - Cause and Effect
5x19 - The First Duty
5x21 - The Perfect Mate
5x25 - The Inner Light
Season 6
6x10/11 - Chain of Command, Part II & II (Massive warning for psychological and physical torture)
6x15 - Tapestry (Mostly here for Picard backstory purposes)
6x19 - Lessons
6x20 - The Chase (This is specifically here for the last scene where again Jonathan Frakes makes some interesting directorial decisions)
6x22 - Suspicions
6x25 - Timescape (This is here for a specific interaction between Deanna and Picard)
6x26 - Descent Part I
Season 7
7x01 - Descent Part II
7x08 - Attached (If you are only going to watch one episode about these two, this is the one to watch)
7x14 - Sub Rosa (This episode is atrociously bad but there’s still some good PC content here)
7x22 - Bloodlines
7x25/26 - All Good Things…

it’s the first contact job (lev 5x03) and eliot’s alias—willie riker—is both amazing and awful.
amazing because this episode is directed by commander william t riker himself jonathan frakes. and it’s an episode about aliens and out space. it’s a wonderful easter egg.
but in terms of the con it’s an awful awful choice. like c’mon hardison—you are canonically a trekkie and a genius. you are going to have to assume that every single sci-fi reference is off the table. because the mark would know it and be instantly suspicious.
and it’s not like willie riker is any sort of deep cut tng reference. like maybe billy cause in s1 deanna does refer to a pre-bearded riker as bill. it’s terrible and they (wisely) never do it again (st tng 1x03 and 1x11). or what about thomas riker? tommy. from that one time he’s cloned in a transporter accident (st tng 6x24)?
not to mention the mark has a riker action figure right next to his little seti computers. it’s just way too obvious. too risky. it could blow the con.
no. what they should’ve done is call eliot’s character johnnie frakes.

TNG 1x03: The Naked Now
- “I hope you have a lot of pretty boys on board,” the distress call lady says. The camera goes from Picard to Riker.
- closed captions: [wild party sounds]
- Troi’s changed to her more recognizable-as-her-uniform v-neck. It’s purple. I like it.
- from “on trial for all of humanity’s crimes” to “sex pollen” in two episodes, this show is already wild
- W. T. “Didn’t I read about this happening to Jim Kirk?” Riker
- Wesley this is why everyone makes fun of you!! And it’s only the second episode!!
- “I don’t understand their humor, either.” This win’s 1x03′s best Worf line.
- Tragic backstory alert: Lt. Yar Edition.
- Picard’s awkward wave to Beverly, I’m dying.
- I think my favorite part of this episode is Worf sitting at the helm the whole time like “ugh, humans”.

June 22: 1x03 Where No Man Has Gone Before
Today, the second pilot, aka Kirk fights his ex-boyfriend, the superhuman space mutant.
Whaaaaat TV screen by the chess set? That’s such a funny transition for me for some reason.
Spock thinks he can win lol. I love that he’s sassy from the start. And throwing shade at Sarek, which is how I choose to interpret “my ancestor married a human woman” when he very well knows it’s his dad.
“Materializer.”
For a moment, I thought Spock was of a lower rank but then I realized the pilot uniforms only showed three different ranks so who even knows.
I’m barely even paying attention to the plot, I’m too distracted by the outfits and the banter.
Are you certain you don’t know what irritation is, Mr. Spock????? Are you SURE?
THIS ELEVATOR SCENE IS STILL MY FAVORITE IN THE WHOLE SERIES. Kirk is so obviously in love with Spock already, like just the way he looks at him??? And Gary is bitter. Did you finish your GAME GUYS? How was the GAME?? You like that CHESS?
Lol at Kirk’s microphone. I love how different the pilot is and how much more obvious the differences are because it’s sci fi. (Their screen/windshield is also hilarious for some reason? It looks very fake.)
Sulu is head of astrophysics?? Really got a demotion there. This needs to be a thing in fic though, somehow.
Kirk is so brave. Gonna explore this weird space thing to save future space travelers.
New drinking game: take a shot every time there’s a random shot of Kirk looking beautiful.
My mother asked if Gary was hoping he could hold Kirk’s hand when the alien force field attacks and I said yes. Dig it in there Mr. Kirk.
Kirk and Spock flying the ship.
Sulu looking gorgeous.
Some gratuitous k/s arm grabbing.
Love how they show the ship has no warp by having it move really slowly across the screen. But actually--completely underrated problem that I forgot about it what with the whole Gary God Complex thing--if you have no warp capabilities you are stranded for real.
It took me a suuuuuper long time to figure out why most esper people died and two became supermutants. The force field targeted the most susceptible but was too much for most of them.
Also I love how the force field was just literally never explained. It just is. Nor was it explained that that other ship was, which Kirk seemed to think shouldn’t have been in deep space in the first place.
I can’t believe Dehner is telling a literal alien “this is how this thing is and there’s only one version of the thing and these are the limits.” Like??? He has all sorts of abilities you don’t know about? Why do you assume that things as they have been observed on Earth are the only way things can be, especially outside Earth? When you are talking to someone whose very existence would be impossible by your measure?
Looking at medbay, can’t help but feel that McCoy really spruced up the joint.
Gary rearranging himself just so for Jim’s entrance.
I legitimately don’t know what “this long hair stuff you like” is. I was born in 1988 so, that’s my excuse.
A STACK OF BOOKS WITH LEGS
IN LT. KIRK’S CLASS YOU THINK OR SINK.
Kirk is giving Gary those “I love you” eyes. They’re exes. Clearly.
I mean “I outlined her whole campaign for her”? First, putting unnecessary characters into a story because the short version is homosexual is ITSELF homosexual and second--that’s very gay on its face.
Kirk is clearly trying to be the Cool Ex (and, uh, boss) and Gary’s still bitter. “Friend Captain.”
No privacy on the Enterprise I see.
“The one you used to know,” Spock says, clearly jealous.
Love poem from 1996--so ancient.
Imo Spock is glad for this opportunity to shade Gary Mitchell openly. Finally, I can tell Jim my real thoughts: we should kill him.
Dr. Dehner is awfully enamored of this whole “new kind of human” thing given that she must have some knowledge of Earth history, including, you know, the horrifically deadly WWIII fought over exactly this idea but w/e.
Sulu bringing the math.
Spock saying “Jim” again. He definitely actually does this a lot? Maybe later he pulls himself back on purpose on account of Too Many Feelings.
D E L T A V E G A .
Forgot they poached that name. Should have kept it a mining planet. I wonder if it is supposed to be the same place and if Ambassador Spock was thinking about Gary while he was there.
“You’re talking about Gary!” This Kirk and Spock scene is really good too. Just about as good as the elevator scene. I literally cannot read this through anything other than the “ex and future boyfriend” lens and it makes it so much better. (Not that it’s not a good story on its face because it is. But just like the additional layers??)
“Our task: maroon my ex-boyfriend on this abandoned planet.” They’ve known each other 15 years.
Kirk and Spock taking Gary down.
That is 100% a drawing taken from the cover of a 50s sci fi novel.
Spock is so ridiculously, comically armed. Pacifist who? They keep on saying he doesn’t have feelings and yet ALL I see are feelings. Arming himself to the teeth for Jim. Clearly bitter about Jim’s feelings for Gary. Ready to thrown down all the time.
RIP Kelso. Good thing he got that commendation.
“Command and compassion is a fool’s mixture.”
“Don’t wake up Spock until I’m gone or he’ll follow me.” True.
Just Jim and his ridiculous weapon now, off to ruin Gary’s date.
Kirk and Spock would love all these flowers.
“You were a psychiatrist once--ten minutes ago.”
“Did you hear him joke about compassion?” I know the powers corrupted Gary but...did they do all the corrupting? Or did they just allow him to say some stuff he really means?
That “phaser rifle” looks like a supersoaker. (Mom: it probably is.)
Gary claims to know Jim so well but he doesn’t even know his middle name.
He’s so dramatic. SO DRAMATIC. Calling Jim “James” all the time; clearly his personal name for him when they were together. Whereas Jim continues to call him by his last name, which is funny.
And then Spock sees Jim is about to get sad and makes sure to come right over. “I felt for him too,” he admits, reluctantly.
It’s weird how much more dated this ep looks imo. Like I strongly maintain that even on the basis of style TOS ages very well (better than TNG which is 90s to the hilt), but this one looked very...50s/60s sci fi. Not in a bad way, just in a very obvious way. I feel like even the Enterprise looks a lot different after the pilot, in ways I can’t really explain or describe or pinpoint. It’s just subtly.... more unique. More real.
Mom and I were discussing where this fits in the timeline. She thinks early 5 year mission, which is what I’ve always assumed...but I’m bothered by how 99% of the crew is different. So now I’m thinking, like, pre-5 year mission? Maybe like a short mission? This is Kirk’s first command, maybe they sent him out for like a year first. It doesn’t explain how Gary and Spock have “worked together for years” but Dehner could have been wrong about that, or she could have meant they both have 15 years + in Starfleet.
The AOSverse should have rebooted Mitchell instead of Khan and that’s all I’m saying about that but it’s true.
I have always assumed Gary is First Officer in this ep but I don’t remember it actually being mentioned and now I’m wondering if we’ve all just collectively made that up.
Next up is the absolute classic The Naked Time. Maybe I’ll find an opportunity to watch it in less than a week’s time?

Star Trek: Picard 1x03 - The End in the Beginning
de-aged picard lol
wow, I love this uniform design
