[The Guitar and other Machines] [The Durutti Column] [1987] [LP] As the title of the album suggests, the focus this time is not solely on the guitar. The great guitarist Vini Reilly conjures up wonderful soundscapes here with some excellent guest musicians. The typical futuristic guitar sound is by no means lost. Instead, an almost magical symbiosis of the various instruments is created, including bass, trumpet, keyboards, harmonica, drum machine, xylophone, viola and human vocals. . Vini Reilly's sound magic is formative and unmistakable but never dominant. The other instruments are used skilfully and everything seems to be cast in one piece without drowning in a uniform sound mush. Fascinating contrasts that complement each other again and again in pleasant harmony. . Is there a bad album by The Durutti Column? Not that I know of! The guitars and other Machines is another precious musical pearl of the very special kind from the rich fund of Vini Reilly. . . . . .
