Trade Secrets

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
------
Captain Black grinned evilly as the island came into view, the Mysteron plan he was supposed to enact planted firmly in his mind. Something else though, or rather, someone else, seemed especially resistant to carrying out this mission. Occasionally, the agent still felt remnants of the man he used to be before all this started. Conrad Turner was still inside his mind, buried deep, but he seemed to be surfacing a lot more recently. It was getting harder for the Mysteron agent to stay in control…
Black shook his head. He couldn’t worry about that now. He had a job to do, and he knew just how to do it…
------
“Oh my baby!” Orchid just had to be reunited with her grandmother before her eldest and youngest brothers, didn’t she? “You’ve been away from all of us for so long! Have you been eating properly? You haven’t been doing anything too dangerous have you?” Orchid looked pleadingly at her father, brothers and colleagues. Every single one of them just gave a look that told her she was on her own. She returned the look, roughly translating to, ‘You will pay.’
She spun back to her grandmother, giving her a hug. “I’m fine Grandma. Everything’s fine.”
“That’s good to hear, dear.” Alan cleared his throat, drawing their attention. “We’ll talk more when this is all over, Pam. You go talk to your brothers…”
Once Ruth stepped back, the Spectrum officer found herself with an armful of little brother. “I take it you missed me then, Allie?” She chuckled as Alan squeezed as hard as he could.
“It’s pretty much all he’s talked about since we found out you were coming…” Scott stepped forward to join the hug, trying and failing to hide a snort of amusement.
“Hi, Scooter.” She mumbled into his shoulder, taking in the calming presence that the eldest sibling always seemed to have. Just knowing they were all here made her feel so much better about the success of Spectrum’s mission…
“Hey!” Alan yelled in protest. “I’ve talked about other stuff.”
Gordon smirked, bumping Alan with his elbow. “Oh, really?” Oh no, that was the tone he always had when shenanigans were being planned… “Like what?”
“You know…” Alan gave him a look. “Things…”
“He means he’s just talked about you.” Virgil cut in, also with a mischievous grin on his face. “It really is good to see you, Pam…”
Pamela smiled as she shifted her gaze from brother to brother. She really was lucky to have them. “It’s good to see you guys too…” She sighed. They’d stalled enough. It was time to get a plan together. “If we wanna see each other again after the twenty-four hours is up, though, we need to figure out what to do.” Everyone immediately noticed her persona change to military, and automatically stood to attention. “And to do that, I’ll need to talk to Dad. Alone…” Jeff perked up, knowing what this chat would be about already.
Her brothers immediately understood the subtext as well, and all nodded. The Spectrum officers were more than a little confused as the father and daughter disappeared into a separate room in the bunker. Grey turned to Gordon, who was still looking at him curiously.
“What’s… What’s going on?”
Gordon sighed, and all of a sudden, Grey saw a look that he recognised all too well. It was the look Orchid had when she was hiding something. “Hopefully, something we can reveal to you when they come out…” The ex-aquanaut raised an eyebrow at his former colleague. What did that mean? He hummed thoughtfully. “Oh, and Brad?” Grey froze at the mention of his real name. His colleagues and the other Tracy brothers looked on, wondering how Gordon knew. Neither of them had quite gotten around to telling people who they used to work with… “Don’t think we’re not gonna talk things through when we get out of this mess alive…”
------
“First of all, who was supposed to be up on Five?”
“It was Alan’s month. We tried to get him to stay; he probably would’ve been safer up there. But he insisted on coming home. Said if he was going down, he was going down with us.” Her father sighed. “John wanted to meet you on the runway, so Scott and Tin-Tin picked him up. They touched down just as your plane came up on the radar.”
“Sounds like me and Alan have a similar approach to this threat…” Pamela chuckled without humour. “How’d you guys find out about it?”
“Thunderbird Five has been monitoring transmissions from Mars.” Jeff explained. “There hasn’t been a single threat that International Rescue hasn’t known about.”
“And you haven’t done anything?” Pam asked almost accusingly. Jeff gave her a hard look.
“Sweetie, you know as well as I do that we couldn’t. That’s Spectrum’s job. Not ours. International Rescue hasn’t gotten involved for a reason. We’re reactive; Spectrum is proactive…” Jeff explained. “Besides, you fight for your life in this conflict daily… It’s not something I want your brothers doing…”
“No need to explain, Dad. I get it.” Pam sighed, running a hand through her hair. “I don’t want them anywhere near this war. Heaven knows you guys have enough going on…”
A moment of silence passed between them before Jeff spoke again. “I already know what you’re going to say.” Pamela raised an eyebrow. “Usually, I would say no right off the bat. You know why IR is a closely guarded secret. If I am going to say yes to you letting them in on the secret, I’m gonna need a little convincing…”
Pam nodded, clearing her throat before speaking. “When Spectrum is put in charge of protecting an organisation, we have to know everything. The blueprints, the floorplans, what kind of weapons they have. We need to understand what the Mysterons might use to attack their target. Tracy Island is no different.” Jeff raised an eyebrow. “If the Mysterons know the Tracy family and International Rescue are one in the same, which they probably do; they seem to know everything about everyone, they could easily send one of their agents in to destroy the Island using a reactor on one of the ‘Birds, or worse, the Island’s main reactor.”
“If they know, couldn’t you patrol the hangars yourself?”
“Dad, there are like, three of them. And even One’s hangar is too big to patrol alone.” His daughter shook her head, grimacing. “No, I couldn’t do this by myself. I’d need people all over the place. Preferably with partners. There’s just no way our family can do this ourselves. My colleagues are here for a reason, Father.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “How can they do their jobs if they don’t know what to look out for?”
“Okay. Thanks, honey.” Jeff nodded. “But I’m still not sure. It’s such a closely guarded secret…”
“Dad. If it helps, no one understands International Rescue’s secrecy more than a Spectrum officer. Our code names are in place for a reason.” She chuckled. “Technically speaking, we’re not even supposed to reveal our real names to each other, but we do because we trust our fellow officers not to pass it on…”
Jeff paused, resting his chin on his hands. “I’ve made my decision…”
------
The room was dead silent when they came back in, both stone-faced. Emotionless. Everyone gave Orchid a questioning look.
She smiled as Jeff nodded, giving his family the all-clear to reveal it to the Spectrum officers. A sigh of relief spread across the brothers. Gordon grinned from ear to ear, smirking at Grey. “Looks like we get to tell you guys after all…”
Scarlet and Blue exchanged looks. “What is this about, Orchid?”
“What we are about to reveal goes no further than this island.” Orchid began seriously, causing her colleagues to nod with equal determination. Orchid spun round to Brains as her family joined her up front, ready to give additional information when needed. “Brains, show them what Tracy Island is really all about…”
Brains nodded, grinning as he pressed a hidden button on the wall. Several panels slid open, revealing live camera feeds of the first three Thunderbirds, as well as an IR symbol in the middle. The Spectrum officers looked on in shock, utterly speechless.
“Gentlemen…” Jeff began. “Welcome to International Rescue Headquarters.” He smirked when he saw the stunned faces in front of him.
“Wait…” Blue was pretty much the only one who wasn’t totally speechless. “What?!”

DAVID TENNANT ROLES STARTERPACK
(Different roles, where to find them and what they're like!!!) (+ more that I didn't go into included at the end)
*disclaimer: this is sort of UK orientated, 'cos I don't know any American streaming services or where stuff is available in other countries, so PLEASE comment other places you can watch things!!!!
- Takin' Over the Asylum (CAMPBELL BAIN)
Follows a DJ and a group of patients trying to keep a radio station going in a mental hospital. David plays one of the main characters, Campbell Bain, a mostly upbeat and energetic young boy with lots of enthusiasm and spirit. Some angst!
☆ YOUTUBE (free)
- Blackpool (PETER CARLISLE)
A body is found in an arcade run by Ripley Holden, and him and his entire family are pulled into the murder investigation surrounding it. DI Peter Carlisle is working on the case, and highly suspicious of Ripley. He's a pretty major character and has a romantic plot - as well as a few funny musical numbers. Includes sex scenes.
☆ UKTV PLAY (free in UK), AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
- Casanova (GIACOMO CASANOVA)
The (mostly sexual) adventures of Giacomo Casanova, a charming and fraudulent man who falls in love very quickly and very dramatically with a lot of people, all while essentially bullshitting through life and jumping on every opportunity to make money. Includes sex scenes but also angst, such as illness, injuries, some violence, and general suffering.
☆ MYFLIXERX.TO (free), AMAZON
- Recovery (ALAN HAMILTON)
A man and his family coping with the recovery and rehabilitation process after he (Alan, David Tennant) suffers from brain damage. Angsty. Lots of crying, suicide references, head injury stuff.
☆ YOUTUBE (free)
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (BARTY CROUCH JR)
I recommend pirating this one so you're not supporting JK Rowling. DT plays Barty Crouch JR, an antagonist and the son of Barty Crouch. He's kind of a minor character, as he's not actually in a lot of scenes.
☆ Probably on most pirating sites (my go to is MYFLIXERX.TO)
- Learners (CHRISTOPHER ??)
Lighthearted movie about a woman trying to pass her driving test. David plays Chris, her driving instructor. He's a bit of a dork, very sweet and kind. Has a love plot, briefly fights a guy. No major angst.
☆ YOUTUBE (free)
- Hamlet (HAMLET)
Hamlet. Prince of Denmark wants vengeance after his father's death. I haven't actually watched this one yet but I assume it's got the same amount of angst and drama as Hamlet typically does.
☆ AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
- Single Father (DAVE TYLER)
After a fatal car accident, Dave Tyler (DT) is left to parent four children on his own. Still struggling through grief, Dave falls in love again and attempts to hide it. Has LOTS of crying, lots of kissing, sex scenes, DT being miserable and sobbing, etc.
☆ MYFLIXERX.TO (free)
- Rex Is Not Your Lawyer (REX ALEXANDER)
Unaired pilot. Only 40 minutes. Show wasn't picked up, but it is very good. Rex is a successful and skilled lawyer who is forced to stop practising when he starts having panic attacks every time he speaks in court. He decides instead to coach people who want to represent themselves. Lots of DT in very tight suits. American accent. Not MAJOR angst but he does has daddy issues and a panic disorder, so.
☆ YOUTUBE (free)
- Fright Night (PETER VINCENT)
A kid discovers that his neighbour is a vampire, and he seeks out a famous vampire slayer to help him. Peter Vincent (DT) does not live up to his name, and turns out to actually be sort of pathetic. No major angst, not a lot of clothes, no romance, but lots of eyeliner. He's very bisexual. Violence, vampire horror, creepy neighbour.
☆ DISNEY+, AMAZON PRIME
- The Decoy Bride (JAMES ARBER)
Celebrity Lara Tyler tries to get married to her author fiancé James Arber, but the paparazzi interrupts the wedding. Desperate to keep it private, she takes James to the island that he based his book on. Somehow, the paparazzi still find them, and they hire a decoy bride to pretend to be Lara. Romance, kissing, light hearted, minimal angst. David in a funny outfit. Fake dating trope?
☆ AMAZON PRIME
- Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger (Donald and Roderick Peterson)
Sequel to Nativity, but you don't need to watch the first one. Primary school teacher Donald Peterson (DT) is forced to take his class to Wales to participate in A Song For Christmas, a festive singing competition. Here he is put against his twin brother, who is a successful composer and with whom he has a strained relationship. Light angst - lots of daddy issues, but generally sweet.
☆ AMAZON, I think its on NOW TV???
- The Escape Artist (WILL BURTON)
A defence lawyer, Will Burton, gets a murderer off free, and very quickly grows to regret it, when his client comes after his family next. Lots of murder. Like three murders I think. Hot lawyer DT.
☆ AMAZON (I can't believe I forgot this one)
- What We Did On Our Holiday (DOUG MCLEOD)
A family go to Scotland for their grandfather's 70th birthday. Doug (DT) and his wife (Rosamund Pike) are getting a divorce, but are hiding it from the rest of the family. Movie is mostly focused on the kids and their grandad, but David has a few moments, and he's generally present throughout. Funny, slightly shocking at times, family film. No major angst. Character death.
☆ AMAZON PRIME
- Richard II (RICHARD II)
Shakespeare's Richard II. David plays the titular character, the extravagant, heartless and cold King of England, Richard II. We see his fall from grace as he is stripped of everything he owns and knows. Quite angsty. Long hair, androgynous David. Queer kiss scene (although they are cousins, soo...)
☆ you can find a link in a REDDIT comment if you search for it, AMAZON PRIME
- Broadchurch (ALEC HARDY)
An eleven-year-old boy is murdered in a small town, sending shock-waves through the community. Story follows both the family and communities response to the crime, as well as the investigation done by DI Alec Hardy (DT) and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Coleman). Lots of angst from Alec. He is sick and hiding it. Injury, dizziness, panic attacks, that sort of thing - as well as a heart attack. He has a lot of trauma and daddy issues. Season three touches on topics of rape (warning).
- Mad To Be Normal (RD LIANG)
Biopic about RD Liang, a Scottish psychiatrist. Sex, misogyny, mental health topics, some self-harm (done by another character)
☆ AMAZON (sensing a pattern)
- Good Omens (CROWLEY)
An angel (Michael Sheen) and a demon work together to stop the end of the world. Queer romance (canon), some angst. Drama, comedy, LGBTQ+. David plays Crowley, the demon (who "sauntered vaguely downwards" rather than fell from heaven)
☆ AMAZON PRIME
- Staged (DAVID TENNANT)
A COVID lockdown comedy about David Tennant and Michael Sheen talking via Zoom during the lockdown. Actually quite sad at times? Mostly silly, though. Features Georgia Tennant and Anna Lundberg.
☆ BBC Iplayer (UK) (or VPN)
- Around The World in 80 Days (PHILEAS FOGG)
Phileas Fogg, a quiet and reserved man, decides to travel around the world in 80 days, after he receives an anonymous postcard calling him a coward. Cute found family, drama, angst (ex-lover stuff, internalised cowardice, illness, near death experience), some violence. There's a scene where Phileas gets flogged (whipped, essentially) quite violently, and it's somewhat graphic. Touches on themes of racism. Phileas is 100% neurodivergent.
☆ BBC Iplayer (UK) (or VPN)
- Inside Man (HARRY WATLING)
DT plays a vicar, Harry, who is involved in a murder after trying to protect his son - who was accused of having CP. Suicide themes, murder, self-harm - explores the idea that any person can murder, if they're pushed the right way. Includes topics to do with CP and pedophilia.
☆ NETFLIX, AMAZON
- Litvinenko (LITVINENKO)
Biopic about Alexander Litvinenko. A group of detectives investigate the poisoning of Litvinenko. David is bald in this show. (Scary)
☆ ITVX (UK) (or VPN)
- Doctor who (10TH AND 14TH DOCTORS)
Do I need to explain Doctor Who???? David Tennant plays the tenth and fourteenth regenerations of The Doctor, a Time Lord from outerspace. He travels around in the TARDIS with human companions.
☆ BBC Iplayer (UK)
I think I'm gonna leave it there, but there are a LOT that I have not touched on. This post is a very accurate and long list of everything on DT's filmography, so i recommend you check that out.
Other things I didn't mention (off the top of my head):
There She Goes, Bad Samaritan, Einstein and Eddington, Rab. C Nesbitt, Bright Young Things, LA Without a Map, Much Ado About Nothing, Duck Patrol, True Love, Gracepoint, Camping (US), Nan's Christmas Carol, Mary Queen of Scots, (You, Me and Him), Secret Smile, Deadwater Fell, Jessica Jones, Dramarama, Spies of Warsaw, AND A LOT MORE. (+ voice acting roles, and also his narrating work on Spy In The Wild (2017)

August 24, 1964: Alex, Griffin and Dominique Dunne meet the Beatles.
‘I have a photograph of my three children being introduced to the Beatles - John, Paul, George, and Ringo - in the Beverly Hills garden of Alan Livingston, the president of Capitol Records, for whom the Beatles then recorded, and his wife, Nancy Olson, who had starred in Sunset Boulevard with Gloria Swanson and William Holden. To their great amusement, Dominique, then age four, curtsied to each Beatle as she went through the line, the way my wife Lenny had taught her to do with our guests.’

Pairing: Ethan Ramsey X Catherine Valentine
Characters: Ethan, Catherine, Sienna, Jackie, Elijah, Aurora, Bryce, Anna, Daphne, Lucas, Alan
Category: Alternate Universe
Genre: Fluff
Word count: 900+
Premise: Return from the hospital, a little bit of fun during a sleepover and a birthday invite.
A/N: Drop a like if you feel like it, it always makes a writer happy! 🥰❤️
________
Ethan woke up. His blurry vision scanned the room, before he felt a hand press him back down on a bed.
"Easy there, child." The quiet voice of Daphne Valentine soothed the beating in his ears.
"Where am I?"
"In the hospital."
"What? Why?"
"You hit your head and lost consciousness. The others are also being treated."
Ethan opened his eyes, his vision much better. "How are they?"
Daphne nodded. "Stable."
Then, she whispered, "Thank you for saving my darling."
Ethan smiled weakly, he could feel sleep engulfing him.
"I'll be back in five minutes, your father will be arriving shortly."
Just then, Alan walked in, and Daphne smiled in delight. "There you go, Ethan."
The two adults exchanged pleasantries, before Daphne bent down and kissed Ethan on the forehead and walked out.
Ethan closed his eyes tightly, trying to keep his emotions at bay.
Being kissed like that, with maternal love and affection, even the heavens knew he'd missed it.
He felt Alan talking, and he engaged in the conversation.
___________
Catherine moaned, her head throbbing as her eyes tried to adjust to the warm lights.
"Holy fuc-"
"I'm here."
"Holy fuchsia."
"Totally believable."
"What else would I be meaning?"
"Of course." The teasing twinkle of Daphne Valentine welcomed Catherine back to consciousness.
She sat up, looking around. She was in the general ward, and saw her friends in different beds, their parents surrounding them.
"Where's Ethan, Anna and Bryce?"
"Ethan is in a private ward because he faced several injuries all over his body, Anna is in ventilation, and Bryce is at the other end of the ward. His parents will be arriving shortly."
Catherine nodded. "Can I see them?"
"Wait for the doctor."
Just then, Sienna's voice reached her. "C?"
"I'm alive."
"Me too. Cheers."
"Cheers. Where's the doctor?"
"Mom said she's coming."
"Ehh."
Just then, a doctor walked in. "How are you kids feeling?"
"Alive."
The doctor quickly performed an overall checkup, and announced everyone fit. "You all can go see your friends if you wish."
The six got out of their beds.
"Ethan first. Then Anna." Catherine said firmly.
"Without doubt."
Catherine saw the adults talking, and they slipped out.
"Doc said room 625."
_____________
"Ethan?" His eyes fluttered open to meet the nervous face of Catherine Valentine.
"Hi" he softly murmured.
"Doc said we are fit to leave, what about you?"
"Mm...will be discharged...two hours.... hurts in the head....see you soon..." Ethan's eyes were struggling to stay open.
"Get well soon, stupid." Jackie mumbled.
"He's not stupid?" Sienna said incredulously.
The friend group went out, Catherine requesting an extra five minutes with Ethan.
Before she could speak, however, "no."
She looked at him in surprise. "No, C. I know you are going to apologize, for what? There's nothing to be sorry about."
Catherine mumbled something before sitting by him and stroking his hair.
Seeing his smile, she bent down to softly brush her lips against his forehead, eliciting a delighted squeal from him.
"Oh, sorry." Catherine looked up to see Alan and Daphne standing there, smiling slightly.
She backed off, feeling a blush creep up her neck. "I'll just..."
"Stay." The guardians left the two teens alone, and Ethan snuggled into the thin blanket, the comforting presence of Catherine lulling him to sleep.
____________
It was morning when Catherine blinked against the harsh lights. The distinct voice of Ethan rang through her ears, and she bolted up.
"Hi, C." The cheerful face of Ethan Ramsey and the morose face of Anna Holden met her.
"Hi."
Anna extended a hand awkwardly. "I believe we got off on the wrong foot. I'm sorry, and, I'd like to start over."
Catherine smiled. "Thank you."
She looked around. It was her living room. Her friends were lying in different positions, either sleeping or half awake.
Just then, Sienna stirred. "Mmmm."
Catherine laughed. "Good morning to you too."
"Morning, duck face."
Catherine shoved her playfully, as Sienna groaned. "Bloody hell, I feel so sore."
"Stretch around, it'll help."
"Gee, thanks, Doc."
"Main question is, how did we end up in C's living room?" Anna asked curiously.
"That would be me."
The twinkling face of Daphne Valentine popped into the room. "Your parents gave me permission to let all of you spend a couple of days at our place."
Bryce smiled. "Thanks, Mrs. Valentine."
Daphne smiled, then said, "Breakfast is ready, if you all are."
____________
Ethan took his place beside Catherine, blushing slightly.
"Why are you looking like a tomato?" Catherine asked, giggling.
Ethan looked at his plate, unable to say anything.
Teasingly, Catherine squeezed his thigh, and Ethan went fifty shades darker.
Catherine looked down, just in case she hurt him, then had to bite back a small laugh.
Ethan couldn't even look at her.
"Awww." Catherine teased.
"Stop. It's embarrassing." Ethan mumbled.
Catherine laughed. "What? It's natural, now that you're undergoing adolescence."
Ethan sighed. "I know, but really? Here, of all places? Everyone will see it as soon as I get up!" He whispered.
Catherine laughed. "Hopefully it'll die down by then."
"What are you two talking about?" Sienna asked curiously.
"Look at Ethan, he's blushing." Anna teased.
Jackie snorted. "Who knows, maybe they're playing under the table."
"Jackie!" Elijah said, blushing slightly. "We are minors!"
Jackie rolled her eyes. "Chill, meathead. We all know what sex is." Bryce added.
Catherine laughed as Ethan blushed harder. "Awww you're fifty shades of red."
"It's not funny." Ethan hissed, and Catherine stopped, seeing his eyes.
"Sorry." She said apologetically.
Even after lunch, Ethan resolutely refused to get up for reasons unknown to all but Catherine.
As the others filed out of the room, Catherine was about to turn the lights off when she saw Ethan sitting at the table.
She chuckled. "Your tent pole is still upright?"
Ethan helplessly glared at her.
______________
"I win!" Sienna declared, knocking out Catherine's final chess piece.
"Well played, Si. Rematch?" Catherine said enthusiastically.
"You're on!" Sienna said, laughing.
_______________
"Goodnight, campers. Have fun." Daphne Valentine said cheerfully before leaving Catherine's bedroom, all the kids camping on mattresses.
_______________
The next morning, Ethan woke up to a dark room.
"Mmnghh." He moaned. Looking at the digital alarm clock, he realised it was 4.00 a.m.
Just then, he felt someone stir beside him.
"Ethan?" Anna whispered.
"Mm?"
"It's so dark."
"Mm."
"Go to sleep."
"Mm!"
"Stop saying mm!" Anna snapped sleepily.
"Mm..."
Sighing, Anna turned on her side and went back to her peaceful slumber.
________________
It was 8.00 a.m when they all were very rudely awoken by Lucas Valentine barging in, in pursuit of his lost TV remote.
After breakfast, when everyone left, Daphne called Catherine for a conversation.
"Invite them over for your birthday." She said simply.
"What? Oh, yeah. I'd been planning on that." Catherine said lightly.
"Don't plan, put it in action. Your birthday is almost here."
Catherine nodded. "Alright. I'll invite them now."

How would you rank Alan Moore’s major works?
Watchmen comes first, because it contains everything he can do done to perfection. Its crystalline structure holds all his contradictions in a sustaining tension, his heart and his head perfectly aligned in one of the most beguiling fictional heterocosms I have ever had the pleasure of entering. I've read it more times than I've read anything, to be honest, and I'm not tired of it yet.
From Hell is also an extraordinary literary achievement, not at all diminished if placed next to comparable or roughly contemporaneous works by Pynchon or McCarthy—I've compared Sir William Gull to Judge Holden—and heartfelt in its own way, if also at an extreme of horror hard to match elsewhere in serious fiction.
There's a lot of dross in the Swamp Thing run, but I love its first and final third, everything before and after the relatively bad "American Gothic," because it's almost all heart, an outpouring of lyricism like nothing else before in comics, the imitation of which would launch Gaiman and Morrison down their own paths.
The Lovecraft material probably has to come next—The Courtyard, Neonomicon, and Providence—his most truly substantial comics work of this century and a profound and ambivalent meditation on how the pop and cult fiction of the last century created our present reality. It's about as horrifying as From Hell, however, with its entire chapter of interspecies rape to balance From Hell's entire chapter of misogynist murder.
Tied for fifth, almost of necessity, are the didactic series Promethea and the prose novel Voice of the Fire. To understand post-1980s Moore, you must understand magic, and these two works, uneven as they might be, suggest what magic means to Moore. Promethea, anyway, for all its faults, is often a pleasant post-Vertigo throwback to the proto-Vertigo qualities of Swamp Thing, while Voice of the Fire—a book a few years ahead in English literature of the technique David Mitchell would be celebrated for in Ghostwritten and especially Cloud Atlas, though both Moore and Mitchell borrow from a book I've never read, Riddley Walker—has passages of such scorching intensity you could put them next to any contemporaneous novelist.
So that's my top five (or top six). Miracleman is too disunified, so clumsy at inception and so polished in conclusion, though Book Three is remarkable. Neither V for Vendetta nor Lost Girls can sustain critical scrutiny on any but a formalist level; Moore at his most politically didactic proves himself politically naive. The first two chapters of Big Numbers are stunning, and I mourn what might have been. Tom Strong, with its bittersweet and poisoned nostalgia, is poignant, underrated, while Top 10 is unreadably dense and overrated. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is good for its first two volumes—volume 2, as an intense refraction of post-9/11 politics, is especially brutal and powerful—and then it becomes a folly and a self-indulgence, which I did not bother to keep up with. I love the performance pieces, especially the first one, The Moon and Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre of Marvels. Among the rest of the prose, I didn't finish Jerusalem and didn't love the 250 pages I did read—he seemed to have understood the difference between a comic-book script and a novel better when he wrote Voice of the Fire 20 years before—and I found the novel-length "Thunderman" centerpiece of Illuminations close to reprehensible. Since I've rendered such a negative verdict on that most recent work, let me conclude by recommending what's probably the gem among the earliest work, the tender and clever Delany-esque feminist space opera, The Ballad of Halo Jones, with its memorable tagline, "Where did she go? Out. What did she do? Everything." Moore almost never went out—almost never left his hometown, except for ventures in the astral plane—and yet he has written everything, in every genre, in every style, and for that he has, despite any local judgments I might make against this or that work, my entire admiration.

Spectrum Uniforms
Just making a 'Master Post' that I can hopefully link to from my main tumblr page.
This will be the uniform versions and (once I make them) 'character collage' images.
Characters posted in descending rank order, and for characters of the same rank, descending age.
Tumblr media
The highest rating in Spectrum is OF-7 (2 star admiral), there is no OF-1 rating or OR-1 rating, and while there are Warrant Officers, there are only two ranks of Warrant Officer.
Only the Officers are Color Coded (and all Officers are Color Coded). The Enlisted aren't color coded, BUT they have fake names, using surnames that are jobs or structures, etc (Smith, Bridge, etc)
FLAG OFFICERS and SENIOR OFFICERS
Spectrum's ranks are set up to be rather opaque / confounding to those outside of Spectrum to a greater or lesser degree as one of the measures of protection for the members of the organization.
The rank / rating insignia are purposefully understated, and there is rank title sharing between of5 & of4 (captain), and of3 & of2 (Lieutenant)
The ranks are also overall unique. While I did change the rank title on Colonel White to Admiral White, that was due to the fact that a Colonel is an of5 essentially world wide, and even if he wasn't REALLY that rank, the fact remains that White would be treated as said rank by everyone he worked with, which actually would cause issues on the regular.
Thus, Colonel White became Admiral White, using Naval ranking rather than Army because White had been Navy prior to Spectrum, AND because doing so had the added bonus of bumping the Captains from of3 up to of5.
====================
OF-7 Admiral White (2 star Admiral) Sir Charles Grey 2017 - July - 14
Tumblr media
====================
OF-6 Captain Black (actually a Commodore / 1 star Admiral) Conrad Turner 2029 - Mar - 17 (Conrad was the co-founder of Spectrum, and prior to the Mars Mission / the Mysterons, he was the SiC / XO of Spectrum)
Tumblr media
=================
OF-5 Captains
-----------
Captain Grey Iain Holden 2027 - Mar - 4 (nCS and ogCS Grey were so simular to each other that I merged them into a singular character, taking elements from both, although overall ogCS takes presidence)
Tumblr media
------------
Destiny Angel Juliette Pontoin 2030 - Aug - 23 (Destiny is the highest ranked of the Angels. My annual was damaged by a coffee stain, and it wasn't until a few years ago that I found out that'd I'd misread Destiny's birthyear for decades ^^;; I just kept myficverse Destiny with the 'wrong' birth year simply because it's what I'm used to for her)
Tumblr media
------------
Captain Brown Stephen Blackburn 2033 - Jan - 14 (While I originally used Brown's canon name of Alan Stephens, when I switched the TV21 Zero X comics crew with Spectrum characters (Black, Destiny, Brown, Goldenrod), Brown was showing up too often and having his real name used too much and it became too easy to mix him up with Alan Tracy, so I used his surname for his given name, and used the popular fanon surname for his surname)
Tumblr media
-----------
Captain Magenta Patrick Donaghue 2034 - May - 17
Tumblr media
---------------
Captain Ochre Richard Fraser* 2035 - Feb - 23 (Ochre was not born Richard Fraser, as well as his appearance, he changed his name with Operation Jigsaw. He was born Matthew McClaine, son of Joe McClaine (aka Joe 90) and grandson of Matthew Harding (The Secret Service).
Tumblr media
---------------
Captain Saffron Elaine Jenkins 2035 - May - 11 (nCS Captain Ochre, as I merged nCS and ogCS, AND I adored Lady Ochre... I just don't like it when characters that are basically OCs use pre-existing character names... thus, Lady Ochre needed a new Color Code ^^. Her surname was changed to Jenkins as a tip of the hat to Leroy Jenkins, cause she is SO VERY MUCH a Leroy Jenkins type of character XD )
Tumblr media
------------------------
Captain Blue Adam Svenson 2035 - Aug - 26 (2015 - Aug - 26*) (He was one of the five non-Koala Base personnel who were trapped by the Time Bubble. When all was said and done and the Bubble went down, he was 20 years older, didn't feel safe remaining on active field duty in his 60s, but wanted to remain active in Spectrum and thus took was transfered (alongside Symphony Angel, now Captain Sky) to become base commander of Owl Base, the special ops / secret agent base)
Tumblr media
------------------
Captain Scarlet Paul Metcalfe 2035 - Oct - 15
Tumblr media
-------------------
Captain Olive Mariah Blackburn 2035 - Oct - 15 (My only OC this high a rank, and the ONLY reason she's an of-5 is that I have her as the commander of Koala Base, and she needed to be a high enough rank for that. She's a background / support character, but she was Captain Brown's wife, and is the mother of Starbuck "Buck" Blackburn - the second Captain Brown)
Tumblr media
-------------------------
Captain Brown (jr) Starbuck "Buck" Blackburn 2053 - Oct - 31* (nCS Blue. There was time schennannigins that occurred at Koala Base inbetween S2 (the end of teh ogCS rewrite) and S3 (the start of the nCS rewrite) that had a 'Time Bubble' go up. Inside the Time Bubble, 20 years occur for Koala Base, where-as only 4 years pass outside the Time Bubble. Which results in the son of Captain Brown and Captain Olive to be an adult when the Bubble is eventually defeated / dropped. Buck received full training during the 20 year span, and once all was said and done, he was made a Color Captain - taking up his father's Color Code by his request.
Tumblr media
==========================
OF-4 Captain / Command Captain (Commander)
----------------
Doctor Goldenrod Mason Frost 2015 - Jun - 05 (Frost was a member of WARP, serving on the SR3 and then teh Zero X under the command of Conrad Turner | Captain Black and alongside Stephen Blackburn | Captain Brown. He joined Spectrum, taking up the role of lead doctor, after Doctor Fawn died when Cloudbase was destroyed)
Tumblr media
----------------------------------
Captain Sky Karen Wainwright 2022 - Jan - 06* (Actually Symphony Angel. She was one of the five non-Koala Base personnel who were trapped by the Time Bubble. When all was said and done and the Bubble went down, she was 20 years older, didn't feel safe remaining a pilot in her 50s, but wanted to remain active in Spectrum and thus took was transfered (alongside Captain Blue) to Owl Base to begin training Special Ops / Spy work)
Tumblr media
----------------------------------
Captain Vermilion Chan Kwan 2022 - Jun - 19* (Actually Harmony Angel. She was one of the five non-Koala Base personnel who were trapped by the Time Bubble. When all was said and done and the Bubble went down, she was 20 eyars older, didn't feel safe remaining a pilot in her 50s, but wanted to remain active in Spectrum and thus took over melee combat training on Koala Base from the retiring Captain Hemp)
Tumblr media
----------------------------------
Captain Hemp Cuhtahlatah 2031 - Apr - 7 (an OC, she's the melee combat trainer on Koala Base. She was on Koala Base when the Time Bubble occured, and when it went down she decided that - being over 60 years old - she could not safely remain as melee combat trainer, and retired from Spectrum)
Tumblr media
--------------------
Doctor Fawn Edward Wilkie 2031 - Jul - 10
Tumblr media
-------------------
Captain Indigo Andrew Macey 2033 - Sept - 01 (He's actually the character Macey from Big Ben Strikes Again. Spectrum checked into him after all was said and done and found that Macey was a weapons designer / builder, and rushed him trhough training to have him help construct the Mysteron Gun
Tumblr media
----------------
Captain Turquoise Shaka Dlamini 2041 - Mar - 1 (an oooooolllllllld OC created by myself and a few friends waaaaaay back in the 1980s)
Tumblr media
----------------
Symphony Angel Karen Wainwright 2042 - Jan - 06
Tumblr media
---------------
Harmony Angel Chan Kwan 2042 - Jun - 19
Tumblr media
-------------------
Melody Angel Magnolia Jones 2043 - Jan - 10
Tumblr media
-----------------------
Rhapsody Angel Dianne Simms 2043 - Apr - 27 (A small fun thing I've got is that Dianne's older brother is Robert Lyon - born Roger Simms - the spy and good friend of Lady Penelope that showed up in Penny's comics)
Tumblr media
---------------------
Crescendo Angel Toshi Drake 2049 - Jun - 02 (a merging of the one-off, but quite popular, character from the Angels comic of Toshi and nCS Harmony Angel)
Tumblr media
---------------
Rhythm Angel Esther Jones 2054 - Feb - 08* (nCS Melody Angel, she's one of the people born inside the Koala Base Time Bubble, and is the daughter of Melody Angel and Captain Ochre, who were among the five non-Koala Base personnel who were trapped by the Time Bubble)

Peter Finch in Network (Sidney Lumet, 1976)
Cast: Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch, Robert Duvall, Wesley Addy, Ned Beatty, Beatrice Straight. Screenplay: Paddy Chayefsky. Cinematography: Owen Roizman. Production design: Philip Rosenberg. Film editing: Alan Heim. Music: Eliot Lawrence.
What everyone remembers about Network is its prescient look at the corruption of American television news. It's not just that the rantings of Howard Beale (Peter Finch) foreshadow the diatribes of Tucker Carlson, et al., it's that where once TV news was in the hands of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite, trusted and avuncular, it's now dominated by the glamorous and glib. But the chief problem is that recalling Network as a satire on television misses its real target: corporate capitalism. What we remember from the film is Beale's "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore," Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway in perhaps her best performance) reaching orgasm at the very thought of improving her network's ratings, and Diana and Frank Hackett (Robert Duvall) conspiring to assassinate Beale after his ratings decline. What we should remember is that Beale's ratings decline because he decides to tell his audiences what he perceives as the truth: that they've become mere pawns in a multinational drive to subsume individuality into corporate identity. The key scene in the film really belongs to Ned Beatty as Arthur Jensen, the head of the Communications Corporation of America, the conglomerate that owns the network and that Beale has disclosed is about to be taken over by a Saudi Arabian conglomerate. In the voice of God, Jensen tells Beale, "There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immanent, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, reichmarks, yens, rubles, pounds, and shekels. It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today." But when Beale tries to share this epiphany with his audience, they forsake him. In other words, remembering Network as a satire on television is to mistake the symptom -- the dumbing-down of journalism (and it applies as well to print as to electronic media) -- for the disease: the cancer of corporate greed. The screenplay by Paddy Chayefsky is partly at fault for making Howard Beale and Diana Christensen and the old-fashioned TV news executive Max Schumacher (William Holden) the central figures of the film instead of Jensen. It might have been partly remedied if Jensen had been played by a figure of equal charisma to Finch, Dunaway, and Holden, instead of by Beatty, a likable character actor best known for being violated by mountain men in Deliverance (John Boorman, 1972). (That said, Beatty delivers a terrific performance in his big scene, which deservedly earned him an Oscar nomination.) In the end, Network is really a kind of nihilist satire, not far removed in that regard from Dr. Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick, 1964) in its presentation of a world without alternatives or saviors. It's an entertaining film, with wonderful performances, but a depressing one.
