Prof. Dr. Allison Cameron hat nicht direkt darauf gewartet, dass Mr. Rutherford sie kontaktieren würde; immerhin ist sie mit ihrer Arbeit im Diner, dem Werkeln an ihrer nun nicht mehr ganz so neuen Behausung sowie der Sorge um ihre Kinder mehr als ausreichend beschäftigt. Und doch hat sich in ihrem Magen mit jedem Tag, der seit ihrer Vereinbarung verstrichen ist, eine Vorfreude ausgebreitet, deren Ausmaß sie selbst überrascht hat. Dabei ist sie nicht einmal sonderlich sportlich (eher das Gegenteil) und vom Kämpfen hat sie noch weniger Ahnung (wenn man von den Schießübungen auf dem Jahrmarkt, zu denen sie ihr Vater sie und ihren Bruder immer gezwungen hat, absieht). Vielleicht ist es lediglich die Verheißung eines Neuanfangs - hell, gleißend und jungfräulich wie ein unbeschriebenes Blatt Papier -, aus der sich das Gefühl speist. Wobei in diesem Moment tatsächlich ein anderes Gefühl überwiegt: Ungeduldig trommelt sie auf das Lenkrad ihres schwarzen Thunderbirds - ein Auto, das ihr ganzer Stolz ist. Sie hat ihm absichtlich die Adresse der Reinigung weit außerhalb der Innenstadt Plattsburghs genannt - immerhin muss nicht jeder Bescheidwissen, was sie außerhalb der Schichten im Diner so treibt -, doch der Berufsverkehr am Regal Champlain Center wirkt sich nun zu ihrem Nachteil aus. Sie hofft inständig, dass der Kommandant aus ihrer Verspätung nicht auf ihre grundsätzliche Zuverlässigkeit und Gewissenhaftigkeit schließen würde - beides Eigenschaften, die (da hat sie keinen Zweifel) für den Kampf in einer Armee unabdingbar sind. „Hallo, Mr. Rutherford.“, begrüßt sie ihn, etwas atemlos von der Hektik und der bereits frühlingshaft warmen Sonne - gleichzeitig aber auch von seinem doch nicht gerade unansehnlichen Äußeren. Unwillkürlich fährt sie sich durch das schulterlange, wellige Haar, um es zumindest ein wenig zu glätten, und zupft ihr schwarzes T-Shirt zurecht. Zu allem Überfluss trägt sie auch noch eine Jogginghose, denn immerhin würden sie kämpfen. „Bitte entschuldigen Sie die Verspätung. Der Berufsverkehr… Ja, ich fahre Auto, sogar sehr gerne, und… Mein Wagen steht dahinten.“ Wie sie hofft spiegelbildlich zu seiner Entschlossenheit erwidert sie seinen Händedruck, bevor sie ihm mit einer Geste den Weg zu ihrem Wagen bedeutet. „Haben Sie gut hergefunden?“, fragt sie noch, in der Hoffnung, nicht allzu sehr wie bei einem Vorstellungsgespräch zu klingen.

My True Love Gave to Me by Regina Scott

Series: The Marvelous Munroes #1 Read time: 4 Days Rating: 4/5 Stars

The Quote: “Some gentlemen, like a good meal, require more seasoning than others.” — Mrs Munroe

I wish this hadn't taken me so long to read but due to Xmas preparations, it did. This is a lovely play on the song and the genre. While the ending is predictable what isn't is exactly how we are going to get there. What forms will the lines famed poem and how will Genevieve Munroe come to terms with her mixed emotions. The added drama of the vandalism which appears about halfway through was a good choice. The book needed a little spice at that point and there is a whodunit aspect there if not the who then surely their motive.

I appreciate Genevieve Munroe as a slightly unreliable narrator. She comes across as human. She has never wanted to marry, not particularly and if she does it will be for love not for the comfort of her family (see also that old trope). And yes Gen is more than a little tropey she has the intelligence of a man and the use of her full wits (always a dangerous thing for a woman in historical fiction), she has the awe of the older men in her circle for her wits and unaware of her impact on men. Rutherford Munroe, her father has ensured that she can manage herself and the family accountant (Milford Carstairs) is so proud of her intelligence and use of it. As a reader, we can see the truth of the situation, even without some of the intelligent writing choices, we can see the true affection of Alan to Gen, His mother's affection for her and the reasonings of all the staff around her.

On the writing style. The chapters are quite short. Each one is named after one of the twelve days, the gifts a reader would expect Gen to get that day. With some exceptions. The prologue is called The Orchestra Warms Up, a perfect start to a book with this theme. The others are the interludes called The Baritone Solo, these are Alan Pentercast's perspectives on the situation. The choice to add these was a fantastic one. It means we get to see his earnestness and the whole truth of the situation. There is a sweet story from Genevieve's coming out ball that I loved so much.

Something for readers, the version of The Twelve Days of Christmas that is used by Regina Scott (and therefore and Alan and Gen) is...

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me Twelve Lords-a-Leaping, Eleven Ladies Dancing, Ten Pipers Piping, Nine Drummers Drumming, Eight Maids-a-Milking, Seven Swans-a-Swimming, Six Geese-a-Laying, Five Golden Rings, Four Colly Birds, Two Turtle Doves, And a Partridge in a Pear Tree.

Now remember that the premise of this book is that Alan finds these gifts and sends them to Gen without paying a cent. I mostly picked it up for that premise. That idea of using your wits to find the items. And it really is done well. There isn't repetition in how they are acquired or presented to Gen and her reaction to them suits her attitude. The rings and swans are probably my favourites. The referee is adorable too, he has a vested interest in Alan succeeding in his goal to marry Gen. "“Why, Miss Gen? I’ve thought you and the Squire were well matched for years. If this is what it takes to win you, I wish the man well.” Gen is William's long time friend. He just wants the best for her. Even if Gen occasionally feels betrayed by his words. Ditto to Chimes, the butler come just about everything else.

The kinda cute Allison and Geoffrey unsurprisingly are the protags of book two, Catch of the Season. But to be courted this seriously before one is out? Scandalous. I want to see how that one turns out I think. Is My True Love Gave to Me likely to win any awards? No. Is it a good seasonal read? Yes. The reasonably short chapters allow it to be put down with ease as needed in the busy holiday season. The characters are likeable, the way in which The Twelve Days of Christmas is used well and the writing is quite readable.

Dear Vidder

Hello Vidder!

(FYI to most people seeing this: I’m signing up for Festivids, so this is my letter about my requests to go with my sign up.)

Honestly, I'm flexible and I'm sure I'll be delighted with whatever you make, but I shall try to give you some guidance.

Vid preferences: I love ensembles, I love friendship vids, I love character studies, I love overviews! I’m not as into shippy vids but I can absolutely get on board with them; my fave ship vids are usually fun and/or fucked up, as I'm not really into ballads. I am a big fan of upbeat vids, but I absolutely can go for more serious ones, or those that take a darker turn, too. I can totally enjoy vids with angst, but I’d prefer that to not be the majority of it? I fucking love angry vids filled with righteous anger throughout. While I often enjoy using clips with show audio to begin or close out a vid I don't always love vids using show audio mixed with music? But there are some of that blow me away, so I'm not entirely opposed.

Music preferences: Other than not being all that into ballads, I like all sorts of music! I love discovering new music in vids. Some favourite artists are: Janelle Monae, Tori Amos, Panic! at the Disco, Fleetwood Mac, Blink 182. I love musicals, I love pop, I love rock, I love punk, but I'm here to follow you down any path that works for you.

Don't have any visual or audio sensitivities or triggers. 

Anna and the Apocalypse - What more could you want than a high school Christmas zombie comedy musical??? I love the ensemble here a lot, the whole group of them, feel free to rip my heart out with their decreasing numbers. Anna and Steph are specifically my favourite characters, but honestly I am a fan of all of them. 

Do Revenge - This film is so stunning, really there's so much vidders can do with it. Drea and Eleanor as fucked up soulmates, following the story as a whole, just appreciating the incredible outfits? Whatever you want, I'm here for it.

Everything Everywhere All At Once - What even is there to say about how great this film is? Really here for exploring Joy and Evelyn's relationship, on the film as a whole, the ensemble, , Joy/Jobu/Joybu’s journey, WAYMOND! Here for all of it.

Kevin Can Fuck Himself - God I love this and this it’s such excellent vid fodder. I’d fucking love anything focussing on Allison and/or Patty, maybe a character study of of one of them (Patty’s journey would be such a good vidddd), or an Allison/Patty or Allison&Patty vid would be my EVERYTHING okay. Basically, I desperately want vids about this show/these women in whatever form.

My Brother My Brother and Me - I love this show, I love the McElroys, and really I would love a vid exploring their shenanigans! All the silly fun. I don’t have lots of words about it, but I have much love.

Rutherford Falls - This showwww!!!! I love Reagan with all my everything, but also Bobbie! Terry! The minor characters! Yes, even Nathan, and I do love the journey of Reagan and Nathan’s friendship here. I’d love a vid for this however it goes! 

Star Trek: Lower Decks - I love this crew so much! Would love an ensemble vid for this, or maybe a Tendi's journey or Beckett and her mom or, well, exploring anything here! I just love them.

Purity

(First part of a little one shot from "The new guy")

Ebrisa Rutherford was a charming, pretty young wife and mother. Actually, she could have devoted herself completely to domestic duties. 

A homebody, a mother figure, a zealous housewife and lover. But no, this was not the woman Cullen had once fallen in love with and was almost too shy to marry. Ebrisa was smart and curious. The little blonde had something going for her! She knew a lot about people, domestic affairs, laws and all the turmoil of society. So she was a member of many associations and, despite her young age, enjoyed very high respect from all members and also in her community. She opened her mouth, even when there were delicate matters to discuss. 

Now, Mrs Rutherford had recently learned that one of her best friends was having a secret affair. Whereas affair was not the right term. The couple suffered from the laws in force and the views of the conservative mind.

Ebrisa loved to invite friends over. But with this couple she bit on granite. 

So the blonde used a trick....

"Where are the others? Did I come so damn early? Ebrisa, I'm sorry, coming too early is also a kind of rudeness." David scratched his neck sheepishly.

"Don't worry about it and just enjoy the lemonade, it's homemade after all! Gee, I'm so glad you AND Cullen are getting time off at the same time for once. Al will run the place... hahaha" Laughed the hostess as she refilled Trevelyan's glass. 

"Can I help you with something?" Asked the undersheriff. 

"No. But tell me, how is Rufus and how is Kai? Are you still in touch?" Ebrisa sat down with her guest.

"Rufus is always busy, this keeps him healthy and drives away dull thoughts. He's an old warhorse and we still write to each other regularly. And Kai is on the road as usual. We talk on the phone often, but since he's found someone, I don't want to steal his time." David smiled softly. 

"I could ask how Pavus is now, but maybe you don't want to talk about him?" Ebrisa straightened her dress.

"He's fine. To be able to see him at work and be close to him is a gift. His very presence makes me happy, you know. I can't complain, I'm happier than I've ever been in my life." And in David's eyes glittered the fire of hope and passion. 

Ebrisa didn't understand the rules of the charade her friend had to play, but she tolerated it.

"So now, however, Allison and Cullen must return soon. And the rest to trickle in. I'll go brew some coffee and get the water hot for tea. You'll excuse me?" And she walked over to the kitchen. 

David looked around. A beautiful home it was! Children's toys and the neatly furnished little house harmonised just perfectly together. Everything was coherent, everything exuded joie de vivre. And he felt love. When he thought of love, he thought of Dorian, he also had the day off, maybe they could have spent some time together today, but the Rutherford's invitation was just as important, he had already turned Ebrisa down many times. 

He wondered who else would come? It was the middle of the week, many acquaintances had to work. But maybe it was members of the local council, Ebrisa and Cullen were friends with many people and had obligations to them as well. 

David was so looking forward to seeing Allison. He loved children and he felt like an uncle around this sweet little girl. 

Unfortunately, he had heard what some of the locals thought of him, some of them believed he was a pedophile. He credited Ebrisa for not making any effort to change their friendship, despite her standing with the town council and her position in the church. That was why David felt comfortable and wanted. 

He puffed deeply and snuggled comfortably into the seat of the sofa. Then suddenly he heard voices outside the house. Wasn't that Dorian and Allison's babbling?

He sprang up from the seat.

"I think they're here!" Said Ebrisa and went to the door.

In came three happy faces. Cullen had groceries in his hands, Dorian carried the little girl in his arms. And David was flabbergasted!

(Ebrisa had hatched a plan with Cullen. 

As it happened that Cullen, Dorian and David had the day off, she wanted to arrange a couples' meeting. But Ebrisa knew David would cancel, or maybe Pavus if she invited them as a couple. So it was a case of using tricks.

David was invited quite formally, Dorian was caught off guard. 

Cullen and Allison were grocery shopping and "coincidentally" the engine of their car stopped working right in front of Dorian's house. The two rang the bell and asked for help. Dorian, of course, offered to help immediately and after a few tries, the engine started again. Cullen invited his colleague to thank him. Dorian knew that David had been invited to their home today and did not want to intrude. 

"Very kind of you, Cullen, but I really don't want to disturb." Smiled Pavus.

"Not many are coming, it's no big deal, but I... we want to thank you. Cake's baked anyway. It's really just a "thank you"." Cullen said this absolutely nonchalantly.

Allison squealed gleefully from the child's seat. 

"Very well, thank you, I'll follow you in a few minutes then." Spoke Dorian through the window of the car. 

"Nah, come on! Jump right into our car and let's go!" 

This time Cullen sounded like he did in the office when he gave out instructions. 

Dorian spurted immediately. He locked his house and then got into the sheriff's car.

Thus Cullen's part of the plan had worked, he smirked secretly and surreptitiously from behind the wheel).

Dorian handed Allison over to her mum. 

David immediately ran over to Cullen, shook his hand, beaming, and then walked over to Allison on Ebrisa's arm and kissed her tenderly on the little pink cheek.

David turned and looked in Dorian's direction with a smile, "Hi Dorian, good to see you."

"We can have coffee, tea and cake in a minute. Everything as good as ready." The lady of the house was pleased. 

"But when are the other guests coming?" Trevelyan asked. 

"They've all arrived already..." Chuckled Cullen softly as he put away the groceries. 

The coroner walked over to David and slapped him on the shoulder, "Good morning, Trevelyan! Slept in? We've been had! Chapeau, Mrs Rutherford." And Dorian smiled. 

Then they all took their seats at the beautiful dining table first. 

Dorian sat down next to David and Ebrisa next to Cullen. 

Then there was silence for the time being. 

"Tea or coffee, Mister... may I say Dorian?" Ebrisa's smile was like the sunrise. 

"I'd love tea, dear Ebrisa. Thank you." Dorian's voice was pure velvet.

"And you, Trevelyan?" Laughed Cullen.

"Coffee, please, I need coffee now!" And David grinned.

When they all had cakes and drinks, they enjoyed it and they slowly got into conversation. 

"Dorian, I hear you like music. Which kind of music, if I may ask?" Ebrisa asked as she cleaned Allison's mouth a little bit with her napkin.

"Soul and jazz. And classical music, and musicals." Dorian loved talking about music. 

"Oh, musicals are wonderful. Dance, singing, music, acting - you have it all at once! Just wonderful!" The hostess was bright-eyed. 

Cullen looked over at David with a grin and he nodded and winked. 

"Medicine and music have a lot in common, don't you think?" Ebrisa asked further.

"Indeed! It wasn't easy to make a decision: Music or medicine. But I am satisfied with my choice." Said Dorian, glancing at David with a gentle look. 

"...Satisfied with the choice, yes, that fits..." Chuckled Rutherford.

And Ebrisa nudged her husband in the ribs with her elbow.

Hey anon! Thank you so much for asking! Sadly people don't seem to make 100px or larger static icons as much anymore. Please note that I'm mainly going to be focusing on casts with people of colour, disabled folk and/or queer folk.
