god. it’s just. it’s dreams by the cranberries. it’s the montage of them all voting yes. it’s orla’s little smiley face in the box. it’s the live footage of the troubles. it’s erin’s speech. it’s the way that the last shot is of grandpa joe and anna jumping together out of the voting hall. it’s the sheer symbolism of youth and age being joyful and hopeful together. god.

The closing frame of the Derry Girls finale being Joe (eldest) and Anna (youngest) the last to leave the polling station hand in hand and jumping over the threshold into a new era together was just fucking fantastic.

I just finished watching Derry Girls and I can honestly say I think it's one of the greatest shows ever. No, fr. The jokes, the sad moments, the songs, the all the wonders of the teen show in the 90s and the overall vibe.. like it's just 20/10. I am literally so amazed. I cried my eyes out at the ending because it was so good and hopeful and happy and amazing and immaculate.
Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle and James goodbye
I'll always love you.

Erin and Orla might’ve both had crushes on James it’s just that Orla never repressed it because they never saw a problem with it and so was able to just let it pass and get over it while Erin repressed it, it blossomed against her will because she kept denying it until it was impossible to any more and well, we know what happened next.

Apparently Mystique in the comics was once given Rebecca Romijn's design from the live-action X-Men movies for only two issues...
While Marvel & DC Comics often try to emulate their respective live-action movie counterparts by making alterations to certain character's designs, powers and even personalities (such as Spidey briefly adopting organic webbing to reflect the Sam Rami Spider-Man trilogy, or Iron Man becoming more snarky and jokey to reflect Robert Downey Jr.'s performance in the MCU), sometimes said-alterations either end up not working or even lasting long...
Case in point to the latter... back in the early 2000s Marvel actually tried to have Mystique (aka, Raven Darkholme) in the X-Men comics emulate actress Rebecca Romijn's physical portrayal of the character from the live-action X-Men movies, but it quite literally only stuck around for just a single issue! Specifically in X-Men: Forever (2000) #6 by Fabian Nicieza & Kevin Maguire, both Mystique & Toad were exposed to some kind of radiation device while teaming-up with various X-Men members, and in the process had both their mutant powers and physical appearances significantly altered to more heavily resemble their live-action counter-parts. Toad was given his elongated tongue (which he originally lacked during the Silver Age and solely had the leaping abilities), whereas Mystique was obviously given her naked scaly reptilian appearance from the movies as her new "default" form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This issue came out in April 2001.
However a little over one-year-later in July 2002 when Mystique appeared in Uncanny X-Men (1963) #405 by Joe Casey & Sean Phillips, Mystique was suddenly back in her normal comic book appearance without any explanation. In fact, the only other time the scaly-reptilian design reappeared in comics was in a nightmare sequence from X-Treme X-Men (2001) #33 by Chris Claremont & Igor Kordey from October 2003, wherein a villain named the Reverent caused Rogue to suffer a vision wherein she transforming into her adoptive mother in both appearance and personality and sadistically slaughtering her fellow-teammates Bishop, Storm & Gambit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aside from those two examples, Marvel has never had Mystique in the comics adopt her design from the live-action X-Men movies.
Heck, the only other time Marvel tried to have Mystique emulate Rebecca Romijn's portrayal was in Wolverine #64 & #65 from 2008 as the finale to Jason Aaron & Ron Garney's awesome "Get Mystique" storyline, when in preparation for her final confrontation with Wolverine in the story's climax, Mystique utilized her shapeshifting powers to erase her clothing, fighting Logan completely naked in order to demonstrate to him that she's not a coward nor is she ashamed of herself. And even then, this time Raven lacked the reptilian-scales of her live-action movie counterpart, instead maintaining to her classic comic book design just without the white dress or skull adornments.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But yeah... just a weird bit of obscure trivia concerning Marvel's iconic shapeshifting femme fatale.
I wonder why Marvel suddenly ditched the live-action movie design after only introducing it for a single issue and describing it as her new "default form." I know there was a year in-between the publishing of X-Men Forever #6 and Uncanny X-Men #405, but still...

Derry Girls Headcanon #5: The McCool-Quinns LOVE James and compare every uni and adult life boyfriend of Erin to him (keep in mind that Erin and James began officially dating when they are 25; they had a “thing” in high school but not officially dating).
Mary and Gerry are the nicer ones to Erin’s boyfriends. Gerry tries to be kind and makes conversation but deep down always prefers James—the lads don’t feel his preferences though. Mary tries her best to be nice, but at certain situations she always mentions James and this is when the fellas realize that they’re not necessarily 100% approved.
Aunt Sarah and Joe are the pretty blunt ones. Aunt Sarah being herself, doesn’t know how hurtful she is towards Erin’s boyfriends and is mostly clueless but tries to be nice (the lads are secretly scared of her). Joe on the other hand is just mean and I mean MEAN TO GERRY mean. He grew to like the wee English fella and got used to him even if he did think he was gay at first. Joe won’t ever be nice to James’ face but when Erin brings home a boy he will shit on them and tell his granddaughter to her face that, “Aye, the wee English fella is much, much better.”
Now we need to talk about Orla and Anna. Orla is James’ best friend. No questions there, Orla is hardcore Team James. Anna grew up loving James’ presence especially when the girls would babysit. She’d pull up “tests” for her sister’s boyfriends but at the end of the day she’s also hardcore team James.
Erin won’t admit it to her family, but she agrees. No other fella truly compares to James Maguire.

Thinking about the final scene of the special again, but specifically in comparison to the end of the very first episode. Because that also ended with the five mains, Mary, Sarah, Gerry, Joe, Anna, Dierdre and one of Clare's parents all gathered in one place for one purpose, too.
But, in the first episode, nobody wanted to be there. They were there because the gang fucked up their detention so badly they looked guilty of killing someone. And now, they're there by choice, making one of the most important political decisions they may ever face. Before, the gang were children to be dealt with and talked over and blamed. Now, they're young adults, their voices heard, their right to speak up finally being taken seriously.
And none of them are the same, either. Erin isn't a brash, showy kid desperate to grow up, frantically writing down everything, however inane, frantically chasing boys who don't care about her. She's a young woman who, after saying one of her most profound speeches, says she'll maybe write it down, who's found someone willing to take his time, who'll challenge her to improve without compelling her to change.
James isn't that confused fish out of water that stepped off the bus, reeling from being dropped into Derry by his mother. He's grown more confident, learned to take things in stride, and grown secure enough in the Irish side of his identity that he feels like he can vote in the Referendum, like he's not just the wee English fella anymore, and he's allowed a say in what happens to the place he calls home.
Clare's no longer the anxious, closeted girl who doesn't want to be an individual on her own. She's out and proud, and, as it turns out, every bit as capable of causing mischief as any of the others under the right circumstances.
And that's not even getting to the adults. Mary's not an overworked stay at home mother anymore, she's a student pursuing an exciting new academic journey. Gerry's become more assertive, especially with Joe. Joe has watched his granddaughters grow, and has proven he's as dedicated to their happiness as he is to that of his daughters time and again, and has shown that for all he's an old man, he's no less open to ideas and accepting of others (just maybe not Gerry, but that seems almost out of habit at this point).
We know now that Dierdre isn't just Michelle's mum- she's the former punk that Michelle got her wild streak from, sure, but she's also the mother of one of the prisoners facing release if the nation votes yes. She's got more skin in this game than most of the other adults we see voting, with far more to consider in this scene than just how best to tell her nephew his mother's ran off without him. And, of course, the biggest change to the adults present in this scene- Geraldine is here instead of Sean. This is another moment he wasn't here to see, to be part of.
And I feel like I can’t make a post about the changes from the start of the show to the end, without mentioning wee Anna. When the show started, she was a baby, being carried around by Joe and her parents. And now she's a little girl, standing on her own two feet, walking into the future. She's gonna grow up to be one of the weans for whom the Troubles will be nothing but a ghost story, and that starts here, in the final scene of the special, with her granda excitedly showing her a piece of paper she's too little to fully understand the meaning of, covered in words she can't even read, but that are gonna make it so the stories her big sister and her parents and the rest of her family tell will be just that, stories.
They've all come such a long way from that first episode, and it makes me emotional.

The Reunion
Tumblr media
Pairings: James Maguire + Erin Quinn
Summary: Whilst the parents go to their 20-year school reunion - Erin and Orla have to watch Anna, and Orla invites their friends. Which is awkward after James and Erin's kiss...
Tumblr media
"We won't be long, wains," Mary said, her bag sitting on her shoulder. "Remember, no friends, Anna goes to bed at 8.00,"
"We know, mammy," Erin said. The tiny tot in question had been plonked on the floor in front of the television as it played an episode of Animaniacs (the Warner Siblings Wakko, Yakko and Dot).
Mary nodded and looked over at Anna, who was so absorbed, that she didn't notice Orla doing her step aerobics in the living room.
Erin smiled, as her mammy and dad left the house, followed by Aunt Sarah and granda.
The door shut behind them, and Erin turned around and walked into the living room to sit on the floor with Anna, as Animaniacs entertained them.
Tumblr media
There was a knock on their door, which pulled Erin's attention away from the tv, as Orla stopped her step aerobics and headed towards the door.
"Who is it?" Erin asked, her fingers running through Anna's blonde hair.
"Michelle and Clare. And James," Orla said, and Erin watched as she walked away - everything had been a little bit awkward after their first kiss in Donegal, but they would often share secret smiles after Erin had given him the letter she wrote after he nearly left Derry.
Erin blinked as she then turned in her spot and sat on the floor. "Mammy said we couldn't have anyone around!" She nearly yelled, careful with Anna sitting at her side. Orla had already opened the door when Erin spoke, so the rest of the group heard what she said.
Tumblr media
Erin continued to watch Animaniacs with Anna as the rest of the group sit around the sofa.
Orla was also sitting on the floor, Erin worked herself up off the floor, and headed into the kitchen. James followed her and watched as she opened the fridge to nothing.
"What's with all the oranges?" James asked, seeing piles of orange fruit on the counter and table.
"Mammy and Aunt Sarah tried to drop a dress size for the reunion in the span of 5 hours," Erin explained, as she opened the cupboard.
James slightly nodded, as there wasn't much sat in the fridge or the cupboards for them to eat.
Erin turned around and saw a few notes sitting on the kitchen table. Erin picked them up and thumbed through them. "I think we have enough for a takeaway," Erin said, as she headed into the living room, with James standing close by.
"I'll go get us a takeaway," Clare said, holding her hand out for the money.
"Take James with you," Erin says. "Whatever we get, he won't eat,"
Tumblr media
Erin had made Michelle swear she wouldn't curse this evening - as Anna has started copying people. She's started mimicking granda whenever he would insult Gerry.
As the most recent Animaniacs episode came to an end, Erin pushed herself from completely sitting on the floor, to sitting on her knees. Erin continued to run her fingers through Anna's hair, now that the tot had been changed into her pyjamas.
When the credits started rolling, Erin looked down at Anna (who was now gently rocking on the floor as her eyes started drooping). "Come on, Anna. It's time to go to bed,"
Anna let out a little noise of frustration but agreed when Erin bundled her up off the floor and cradled her.
"I'm going to put Anna to bed," Erin said, as she felt Anna's head get heavier on her shoulder.
"Are you going to be ok, Erin?" James asked, watching as Erin hicked Anna higher up her hip for the second time.
Erin was just about to say she was fine, but as Anna slipped down again. "Could you carry her upstairs?" Erin asked her, to which James nodded and the youngest Quinn was passed over.
Tumblr media
James headed upstairs first, taking it slowly as Anna was slowly dropping off with every step he took.
"It's the second door on the right," Erin told him as they headed along the corridor, passing Erin's parents' room and the bathroom. They reached Anna's bedroom, seeing the door to Erin's room at the end of the corridor.
As James shuffled over to Anna's bed, lifting the covers and tucking her underneath them, Erin closer the curtains, then picked up Anna's teddy bear lying on the floor - and gently tucked it into her arms.
Erin could tell James was about to say something, but she put her fingers to her lips, making sure he was silent as they slipped out of her room. Erin made sure James slipped out first, then gently and slowly closed the door behind them.
Erin sighed, thankful they hadn't woken up Anna. "Success," Erin smiles, as they silently high-fived and then headed down the stairs.
"Mother fucker!" Michelle exclaimed, and the sound of Anna's crying alerted them, they turned around on the stairs and headed back to comfort Anna.
Tumblr media
After they had put Anna to bed for the second time, they walked down the stairs and saw Michelle had already changed the channel before the new episode of Byker Grove started.
"Really, Michelle? Anna had just fallen asleep!" Erin stated, collapsing onto the sofa, with James copying her - their arms brushing along with their thighs pressed together.
Tumblr media
As they walked the new Byker Grove, Erin and James intertwined their pinkie fingers, and their cheeks flushed a soft pink.
But, they made sure when it was over, they separated little and calmed themselves down.
One day, they would be able to do this properly. But until then, they could wait.

Hi!! I absolutely LOVE your James Maguire series! We really don’t have enough James love on the internet. Is it ok if I request a James Maguire x reader oneshot set just after the camping trip episode? Where they still go to the caravan and all the teens have to put the beds together and squeeze in one room and no one wants to sleep next to James so reader ends up there and they wake up cuddling? The others probably make fun of them so bad lmao (Maybe like a little extra from the fella series??) 🥺thank you so much if you do, I had this idea and I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. If you don’t write it I understand thank you anyway xxxx
Squished (James Maguire X Quinn!Reader)
Masterlist
Request Something!
Summary: A stolen tent means less room. But the Derry Girls make do.
A/N: I’m gonna be posting this as a stand alone (so not on the fella masterlist), but I’m gonna write it using the stuff from the fella part 5. So this can be read by itself or as like a lil extra thing from the fella
***
It was a long while before the Derry Girls arrived in Portnoo. After hours of being squished in two cars, harboring what was most likely a fugitive, and getting Grandpa Joe’s friend’s second-best tent stolen, seeing the caravan felt like seeing Mother Mary herself. The only thing that stopped Y/n from rolling out of the car the second she spotted it was her baby sister, who had sat in her lap the entire journey.
“Oh, thank fuck.” Michelle almost yelled as everyone poured out of the cars. Erin gave her a remark about her crude language, in front of her family no less, but was ignored. “I’m allowed to be upset, Erin. I just lost the love of my life and was stuck in a car with you and your kookie aunt for God knows how long.”
“You didn’t even know him, Michelle. He was a criminal.”
Y/n handed her sister Anna off to James so she could get out of the car and stretch her stiff limbs. She tried to ignore the sight of James holding Anna because he seemed nervous to hold her but was still trying to entertain her while he waited for Y/n. It was just too cute.
“Okay, I can take her.” Y/n sighed, reaching out for her sister. James looked at her a little funny.
“Are you sure? You held her the entire trip up here; you don’t want a little break?” She supposed he was right, and she’d be lying if she said she didn’t like how he acted with her interest in mind.
“I mean if you don’t mind-”
“Of course not.” James smiled at her, and she would’ve been giddy if Erin and Michelle weren’t there. Anna babbled against James’ shoulder, grasping at his jacket. The two teens smiled at her, talking to each other while Erin eyed them, not that they noticed.
“No wonder Emmett thought she was their wain,” Erin muttered to herself as she grabbed her suitcase out of the car’s boot. She didn’t know whether to be disgusted or happy for her sister and the fact that she fancied their English friend.
***
“Jesus, it’s cramped in here.” Michelle groaned as she squeezed past the girls to throw her bag somewhere in the caravan the Quinn family had rented. They only rented one; they didn’t expect Erin and Y/n’s friends to accompany them on their annual holiday. Grandpa Joe, Gerry, and James were going to sleep in the tent that Joe’s friend had lent them, but those plans had gone south. But Joe insisted that they should still sleep outside.
“We’re men, aren’t we?” He had said. “We don’t need no damn tent.”
But one look at James, and the girls knew that wouldn’t work out well. He was already nervous around Joe and Gerry, mainly Joe, especially because he was the one who allowed Emmett to steal their tent. But living outdoors with them for who knows how long? No thanks.
The adults had gone to a close-by shop that sold camping gear to get another tent for them to sleep in. Grandpa Joe almost had a heart attack when the girls suggested that James sleep in the caravan with them, but then Mary calmed him down by saying that the girls would be fine because James was gay.
James was getting sick of correcting this assumption. But he didn’t want to sleep in a tent with the adults, so he let it slide.
“Okay, how are we doing this?” Y/n asked, looking at the somewhat cramped space. The girls’ things were either thrown somewhere in the caravan or clutched closely to try to create more room. Everyone looked around. “I know there’s a bed at the end.”
“I call it!” Michelle yelled, pushing past everyone to sit on the bed before anyone else could claim it. She looked smug, probably thinking that she wouldn’t have to share with anyone else.
“Fine.” Y/n sighed, moving Anna to her other hip. She was charged with looking after her while the adults were gone. James was going to offer to carry her, but then decided to take their luggage. “But you have to room with someone else in that bed.”
“What the fuck, Y/n?!” Michelle snarled.
“Look around you, Michelle.” James defended. “There’s six of us in here.” Michelle rolled her eyes at her cousin. Huffing in annoyance, she looked at everyone in the caravan.
“Fine. Clare, you’re with me, yeah?”
“Two down, four to go,” Y/n muttered, looking around. “There’s the two seats in the front, and then the sofa could probably fit two.”
“I’ll take the sofa.” James volunteered, moving to set his bag on it, but still holding Y/n’s for when she decided where to sleep. Erin smirked.
“Orla and I call the seats!” Y/n would’ve glared at Erin if she wasn’t in a room with James and Michelle. She had a sneaking suspicion of what Erin was planning.
“Is that okay with you, Y/n?” James asked. He was still holding her bag, in case she had reservations about sharing a sleeping space with him and wanted to switch with someone else.
“Yeah.” Y/n nodded, watching James smile as he dropped her bag next to his. “Fine with me, James.”
“Aye, James, it must be exciting to finally have a girl in your bed.”
“Shut up, Michelle!”
***
It was late at night when the girls finally decided to go to bed. They had spent most of their time talking about this and that or playing games. Everyone bid each other good night and went to their sleeping areas.
“So, how should we do this?” James asked Y/n quietly. Their gazes kept going between the sofa and each other, trying to figure out what to do. “I can sleep on the floor if you’d like. I’m fine with it.”
“No, James. Don’t be silly.” Y/n bit her lip, trying to figure out how to fit the two of them in this tiny space. “We could lay on our sides.”
It became awkward very fast. The two faced each other, noses almost bumping. They were stiff, trying not to disturb the other. Y/n tried to fix this by turning around so they wouldn’t face each other. She must’ve forgotten how small the sofa was because James reached an arm out to stop her from falling to the floor.
“Careful,” James said, arm wrapped around her waist to pull her further from the edge. Y/n couldn’t ignore the butterflies in her stomach, somewhat surprised that James had the strength to pull her. “You okay?”
“Yeah.” She replied meekly, grateful it was dark so James wouldn’t see the blush on her cheeks even though he was so close to her.
“Want me to let go?” His grip loosened slightly, but she caught his hand before it could leave her.
“No!” Y/n cringed at how loud she was. “I mean, uh, if you don’t mind.” James’ arm settled around her.
“Of course not.” He adjusted himself slightly before letting out a deep sigh. “Good night, Y/n.”
“Good night, James.”
***
“Why is he all over her like that?” Michelle grimaced, joining the crowd of her friends. They all stood before the small sofa, looking down at a sleeping Y/n and James. In his sleep, James had wrapped both arms around Y/n and kept her close to his chest. She didn’t seem to mind, holding her hands on his to prevent him from moving. “Fucking disgusting.”
“Quiet, Michelle,” Clare whispered as Y/n stirred. When she stopped her movements, the group let out a breath of relief they didn’t realize they were holding. “You know what we should do?” Seeming to read her mind, Erin slipped her shoes on.
“I’ll go get Mammy’s camera.”

what your favorite fua ship says about you
raddlove fans: you desire every inch of hopepunk yuri in this show and you want these weird ass gals to have a happy ending with their potato child and plant dog. you’re the mfers who listen to every single interaction they have closely and watch as they receive the most amount of character development for a lesbian couple because you’re upset that there isn’t a lot of wlw representation in media. and thats fine. we needed this. every inch of it. i love you.
harlanc fans: you’re a jonmartin liker that has been traumatized by tma so much. you got into fua hoping this show would heal your wounds but the moment you landed on ep 10 you see the vision despite harley and lancaster only having the relationship of fairly acaquianted coworkers. despite this: you see their struggles and you see the potential outcome that it WILL work out: because theres nothing more delicious than mentally ill yaoi of the most depressed faceless communications officer and a even more depressed psychologist. you don’t care if harlanc becomes canon but you would be OVERJOYED if it was: because after reading several fanfics of this ship you would be crying on the floor.
kleinves fans: klein is your favorite character..and you couldn’t think of who she’d be paired with at first..until alves was introduced. seriously: one of them does not have a voice in the show and every single mention of her theres always some funny ass divorce beef between them. then anna “raddagher formally known as tanfaradd” maguire headbutted and kidnapped you to listen to episode 35 and beyond and now you will NEVER RECOVER. you LOVE the girlfail divorced yuri. you’ve been fed so much. you didn’t think it was gonna happen but it did.
grimmons fans: these characters do not have a voice. these character have only been mentioned four or five times: one of them having their very own episode. what is the point of this ship? the thing is there is no point and it started out as a joke. but its funny as fuck: and we respect that.
