Máscara de Xiuhtecuhtli

La sorprendente máscara turquesa que hoy en día se encuentra en el Museo Británico se cree que representa a Xiuhtecuhtli, el dios azteca del fuego, y data del último siglo del Imperio mexica, en torno a 1400-1521 d.C. Está compuesta de cientos de teselas de turquesa pegadas sobre una base de madera, y estaba pensada para que la llevara puesta el representante del dios en las ceremonias religiosas, o para ponerla sobre una efigie del dios. Casi con toda seguridad, la máscara formó parte del tesoro que Hernán Cortés sacó de Mesoamérica y que después fue entregado a Carlos I.

La Piedra de Tízoc

La Piedra de Tízoc es un enorme cilindro de piedra de la capital mexica de Tenochtitlán que representa un disco solar en su superficie superior plana y lleva un friso alrededor de su borde exterior que muestra guerreros mexicas y al rey mexica Tízoc, cuyo reinado desde 1481 al 1486 d.C., estuvo plagado de rebeliones en todo el imperio. Es casi seguro que la piedra se usó durante las ceremonias de sacrificio, ya sea en concursos de lucha o como receptáculo para los corazones de las víctimas de los sacrificios.

Coyolxauhqui (pron. Koy-ol-shauw-kee) fue la diosa azteca de la luna o la vía láctea quien destaco por haber masacrado a su hermano Huitzilopochtli, el dios de la guerra, en la mitología azteca. Esta historia fue conmemorada en una célebre piedra de gran relieve encontrada al pie de la pirámide de los sacrificios, el Templo Mayor de la capital azteca, Tenochtitlan.
