Self-Portrait | Vincent Van Gogh | 1889 | Musée d'Orsay
“Van Gogh took this penetrating self-portrait with him from Saint-Remy to Auvers. His facial expression is calm, but the background is turbulent. He thus visualised how he was trying to stand firm in the turmoil of his mental illness. Doctor Gachet was deeply moved by this painting. Van Gogh’s portrait of him was in a sense, also a kind of self-portrait. He saw the suffering of his own life reflected in Gashet’s sad expression of out times”

The tragedy of Van Gogh’s final days in Auvers will never leave my mind. Painting more than one painting every day on average, seeing his hope for healing slowly change into something darker and more melancholic as time passes. He put more beauty into the world in his last two months than in any other period of his life. His paintings still propped up and drying in the days after he passed. His brother’s devotion and death the next year. His sister in-law’s love and commitment to his art. His legacy of hope through hard times, of finding beauty in a world that seems to be against you, of trying to heal. The devastating fact that he didn’t make it, but that he tried and tried to get better. To find healing and beauty and peace in the world around him. And that we get to see it.
