Persona 5: Maruki the Councillor REVERSED

Some part of me wishes for Maruki's reality. A world where pain does not exist, but then again, can we truly value the things we never fear of losing? Food for thought.

Someone on Deviant Art made me think of the fact that Maruki IS technically a Palace Ruler & since I added so much of Royal into the Minor Arcana, it felt wrong not to include him. I might revisit this later, but I like this so far. (Maybe I'll make those veins/tubes thicker if I do edit this & though it is an edit, maybe I'll fix up the posture too. We'll see later when it's time for quality control.) I'll be working on convention merch in the next 2 weeks for #animeottawa so I'll be dropping some new stuff as I finish them.

Now that we know the source of Madarame's inspiration (The Infinite Spring) he is being challenged by those forces for the first & final time. Exhausted from his multiple battles he transforms into his boss form to hold his place as the Japanese Master of art. His passion & creativity oppress him now from all the lives he has stolen. Will he achieve victory or will be succumb to those sentiments & pass down that burden to someone else?

All the Pentacle suits will be themed to Kaneshiro''s Palace

There was no doubt in my mind that Kaneshiro was perfect for the King of Coin. A gluttonous man, obsessed with wealth, sits lounging on a stable throne. The bills scatter almost carelessly around him as his 2 pentacles surround him: one in his hand to symbolize that he already possesses riches & one to the right that he (is confident) will possess. Cups tend to symbolize abundance in Tarot so the wine glass should be gripped tight but he's barely holding on to it, marking a person who should be more careful about how he handles his riches because as we know… our Persona 5 Specific Face cards are always, in their true nature, the opposites of their upright meanings.

🛸The Knight of Swords

All the Sword suits will be themed to 🛸Okumura's Palace🛸 Tarot de Marseilles inspiration next for comparison.

A bit different than the usual shadow I put in this card, I chose the middle worker robots because (a side from the girls in Kamosida's Palace) they are representative of the "true" servants of Okumura. With the reading of this card that talks about devotedly action oriented (but prone to burn out & restless) people, it felt right to add this shadow.

🗡🛸 10 Of Swords

I wanted to put MORE crows to create a proper "murder" of crows but it gets really messy with too many loose elements. Maybe I'll add some smaller ones in the future, we'll see. The 10 of cards is one of the most ominous cards of the entire deck. It was only fitting to add this "end scene" to our king of Swords.

🛸The Queen of Swords

This is probably one of the only cards where the meaning is spot of for the character of Cognitive Haru. I made her change her gaze for this reason. It felt wrong for her to ignore her holographic panel that gives her her data. She's not looking at you, she's seeing if there are any flaws in your logic.

After much deliberation, I decided to do the swords suit next.

I think everyone can agree that there was no place in Okumura's palace that gave us more of a feeling of stalemate or choice than the portal puzzle. So here I am, placing the choice before you again: Alpha or Omega? Most of the portals in the sword suit will be white but this one will be the one of the few exception.

The fact that we have an actual knight adds to the romance of the picture: A dashing & courageous figure who is honorable. (Not to us in this case lol) The horse prances happily, adding to the scenario. Like all the face cards in the minor Arcana, they tend to represent their reverse…

Like the other Knights, action is important with this card. Unlike the other Knights, the suit of Pentacles is calculated & patient but productive & determined. Our Security guard walks steadily next to our horse, who lifts its legs & trots calmly, moving at a steady pace. Even the money above his head is floating in an organized & uniform way but pushes onward, passing through the pentacle & dipping to the ground ahead of the guard & horse. As our Bank security guard trudges onward, there will be money laid down at his feet when he gets there, like he planned it.

🖌Queen of Wands

It was hard to figure this one out since our minor Arcana is composed of bad or negative figures. Then I realized that the negative aspect of the Sayuri are the fakes floating around, deceiving all of Madarame's clients. It not only works with a lot of the reverse traits of the Queen but also would allow me to play with the picture as I liked, since I didn't have to be faithful to the original.

So the one in this card is a fake.

The only TRUE Sayuri is with Yusuke.

Here she's looking in the wrong direction. Her body doesn't match the queen behind the portrait. Her frame breaks, showing she's coming out of her shell. Her energies are bursting with vitality, bringing inspiration. However, there is an angry black splotch in an area that reveals the truth. Showing the pettiness of the person who "owns" the piece, placed in a shining gold frame.

In the 3 of wands, we expanded our art & now we celebrate its completion it here! Honestly, I was pretty torn about what to put here since Yusuke has interesting arcs in his confidant that would fit that meaning found in the wands BUT this is supposed to be Madarame's suit so I figured, if (Like in Madarame's palace) we assume that the great work of art for him is Yusuke we can more seamlessly include him in the wand's journey & make it about both of them. He's nurtured one of his "works" into a an artist what will happen now?

NOTE: All the cards can be subject to revision as I go into the deck but I think I'm enjoying this direction. I might even tweek the 2 & 3 of wands to hint at this later down the road. I didn't like Yusuke's works being the focus since it was detached to Madarame.

🍷Queen of Cups

It was a tough choice between Cognitive Shiho or Cognitive Ann but after reading the description, it was like this card was made for Shiho. A gentle warm presence, upright but someone who gives too much in reverse. As always, she's looking away from the viewer lying about her real nature. Shiho needed to be the first Queen on this deck because she deserves it! 😤
