i honestly really dislike the palace rulers being treated so drastically different from akechi in the fandom. even though there's still people who refuse to say anything positive about akechi because he's a terrible guy, the majority of the fandom still treats him like a character and read into his backstory, behaviour, and motivations.

but when it comes to the palace rulers, there's not a single ounce of that attitude for them. it's so strange because not even the story itself has such a crazy bias; the same amount of sympathy towards akechi is given towards the palace rulers too. madarame and okumura are my most obvious examples, with yusuke often expressing his conflicting feelings on the matter, and haru learning about her father's motivations through takakura during her confidant.

in that sense, joker and akechi's relationship parallels that of haru/yusuke and the respective father figure; the two mutually love and care for each other, but unfortunately, one cares more for themselves and it causes their bond to break.

the cut backstories for the palace rulers add a lot to their character, and maybe that's why i like them so much. it makes them feel as rounded out as akechi was (in vanilla, i know he's much more humanized in royal's third semester. that might add to the bias, actually) and it makes me feel kind of bad for those sick, twisted bastards.

but obviously, that content was cut, and it's not very widespread knowledge, unlike akechi's backstory which he explains in-game, right in your face, unavoidably.

there's also this thing i've noticed that i call "fandom activism" where any deep analysis into a good-written character that is a genuinely bad person is seen as condoning their actions because WE ALWAYS HAVE TO SHUN THE EVIL GUY!!! WE CAN'T TALK ABOUT THEM IN CASUAL CONVERSATION!!! WE NEED TO HOLD A FICTIONAL CHARACTER ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE NOT REAL AND...... the way we treat them makes no difference in the world? huh.

personally, i was informed that the way i talk about kamoshida makes people uncomfortable. it's not like i said anything creepy about him, all i do is read into him the same way one would with akechi. he's a genuinely good villain, the same way akechi is! and his mindset is really interesting to look into!!!!! i think they're all missing out!!!!!!!!

my last line of defense is that the palace rulers are unfortunately made way less conventionally attractive than akechi is. that's something i don't like about them, and the fact that everyone lets that sway their opinions of them even less. i know atlus pulls the "make the unsympathetic character ugly" shtick a lot and it's suuuuuuuuuuck.

yeah. i'm kind of peeved about this and i thought you were the best person to send this to. kaneshiro isn't a cute twink but i'm still going to love him with the little attention he gets........... :')

All the Sword suits will be themed to 🛸Okumura's Palace🛸 Tarot de Marseilles inspiration next for comparison.

A bit different than the usual shadow I put in this card, I chose the middle worker robots because (a side from the girls in Kamosida's Palace) they are representative of the "true" servants of Okumura. With the reading of this card that talks about devotedly action oriented (but prone to burn out & restless) people, it felt right to add this shadow.

The under appreciated shuake dynamic of Akira looking Akechi straight in the eye and telling him a lot of the people he killed probably deserved it.

edit: Turns out Okumura isn't as bad as I thought, annoyingly since I still hate him very much. The localisation says that he's responsible for most of the mental shutdowns (which, ???).

This turns out to be a little inaccurate. Okumura is not responsible for most of the shutdowns, but for most of the "odd suspicious cases that aren't accidents or illnesses" that Sae was investigating—presumably things like the naked guy at Wild Duck Burger:

... and that beneficiary is Okumura Foods and its CEO Okumura, of course.

Now, we know that Okumura was responsible for deaths—there's at least one case where a car overturns and all four passengers, including a VP of one of Okumura's competitors, are killed. (If you're keeping count for Akechi, that's four dead in one day alone.) Okumura is Thoroughly Unpleasant. He's just not "responsible for most of the mental shutdowns that went on for years" unpleasant.

I think I have this translation right. It makes sense, for one thing, that Okumura was responsible for most of the weird scandals. It doesn't make sense that he was responsible for most of the mental shutdowns.

addendum to prev: it's very clear from strikers that okumura sr hadn't been a good person for a long, long time. at the very least ten to fifteen years, because by her own admission, haru was still very young when he started to become greedier and more cruel, broke her grandfather's heart and caused him to die of grief, both of which are implied to have drove mariko hyodo away. it's always been odd to me that haru doesn't seem to grieve that much for him, even considering the game's allowance for grief (very little) but fics always make it seem like she will never forgive the killing of a man whose capacity for goodness would never have existed without a change of heart.

he was barely a father to her over most of her life, by the game's lore about her upbringing, and the cognition in the third semester was a husk of a man who simply agreed with whatever she said and wanted- a child's memory and desired outcome of a parent. and by strikers, she seems to be dealing with his death fairly well.

perhaps she wanted a choice in whether he lived or died. that's a case with some argument. but even though she may never be outright grateful to akechi, many avenues opened to her after okumura sr's death, and many lives were saved in turn.

does a man's clear incapacity for goodness after given multiple chances to change naturally allow his death? no. does a man setting up his daughter with a predator automatically make the death penalty a viable option? still nope. doesn't make brainwashing a viable option, either, but the phantom thieves don't keep count of that.

point is, he was still a shit father- more like a tyrant, who was willing to sell her body for political gain. and i still don't think she would resent akechi for the rest of her life.

Everyone keeps suggesting that Sojiro not owning LeBlanc means something bad happened to him but it could always mean that Wakaba never died in this universe

Haha, yeah! If we assume there really are counterparts to every P5 character in P5X's universe that have just lived different lives, the butterfly effect becomes super apparently really quickly: Goro Akechi lived a different life, which inherently means Shido, Joker, Okumura, Haru, Maruki, Wakaba, Sojiro, and Futaba's lives would all look pretty different right now, too.

After much deliberation, I decided to do the swords suit next.

I think everyone can agree that there was no place in Okumura's palace that gave us more of a feeling of stalemate or choice than the portal puzzle. So here I am, placing the choice before you again: Alpha or Omega? Most of the portals in the sword suit will be white but this one will be the one of the few exception.
