I think it's pretty obvious within the canon that the belchers are probably one of the poorest families on the show being that they're working class and working paycheck-to-paycheck and renting their house from the landlord. this was intentional obviously wanting to showcase a lower-class family on an animated sitcom like how loren bouchard had grown up. they're POOR

one of the only families (in my opinion) who are implied to be poorer than the belchers is zeke. he's meant to be a sorta trailer park trash type of character from the south and he's likely in a similar or worse financial situation to the belchers (but obvs its hard to know because we've never seen his house and we don't know what his dad does for work or why his family moves so often) he has a troubled home life at the very least. his idea of a spring break vacation (in comparison to tammy jocelyn and jimmy jr) was going on a road trip with his grandma which doesn't actually cost that much money but could be good if his dad wanted him out of the house. his dad could also be collecting unemployment

jimmy junior's family is intended to be middle class (and in terms of people who live/work on ocean avenue and rent from the fischoeder's they're one of the wealthiest families. I don't think they're upper class though they're basically just financially stable) with his dad having a pretty successful restaurant and renting/owning (is it ever specified??) a condo nearby. his mom persumably owns a single family home somewhere nearby where his dad also lived prior to their divorce so it's safe to say they're a traditional sitcom Middle Class family. unknown if his mom also works or if his dad just pays child support to her

tammy's family is intended to be a WASP-y type family and while I do think they're finanically stable i don't think they're as well off as tammy seems to think they are?? in my opinion tammy seems to think her family is very rich but more likely they're middle class and because her parents are huge pushovers they spend a lot of money on family vacations and fancy parties because tammy Thinks that they can afford those experiences for example the spring break cruise they were going on. we do know they own a single family home in seymour's bay and that in one episode tammy thought that she was enrolled in wagstaff as a fancy private school (??) and she freaked out when she learned she was actually attending a public school. I don't think she's poor I just think she THINKS she's a lot richer than she is. also the episode where her parents enrolled her in the crappy cheap horse camp for their spring break. probably on the same income level as jimmy jr

I think jocelyn's family is probably a pretty basic middle class family nothing else to really say about that FJDMDJSDJSJ we know they live in a single family home somewhere in the suburbs. lower middle class?

rudy's family actually seems to be fairly well-off in comparison to a lot of the bob's burgers characters. his parents are divorced but both seem to live in expensive single family homes in the surburbs surrounding seymour's bay (his father's house seems to be slightly smaller than his mom's house but he might have bought it after their divorce and wouldnt need as much room to begin with) and have updated appliances etc and rudy's dad owns what seems like a pretty expensive and modern SUV. probably both of his parents work and his dad has a good job and can afford to go on vacations or business trips somewhat regularly. I would say rudy's family is upper middle class

considering what you have spoken about regarding selina do you also get frustrated with like…i cant quite explain it but sometimes especially in more recent years shes been posed or positioned like some sort of damsel that needs a big strong man to save her and like im not saying she should be portrayed with the “hollywood level feminism” for lack of a better term im just think about how old versions of selina would have hated that. like im just thinking of anytime in the reeves movie where bruce grabs her or forces her mouth shut or even when he didnt allow her to kill falcone and im just thinking she should claw the fuck out of him for that. i just miss a version of selina who wouldnt allow anyone to walk all over her personal autonomy like that

oh absolutely! in fact this is specifically why i can't stand loeb's take on her character lol (and as we both know that was a significant point of reference for the reeves film). it's really jarring to transition from her volume one and two canon to the long halloween / dark victory / when in rome. i think a lot of people tend to latch onto these books because tim sale's art is to die for and it's obv hard not to enjoy a good murder mystery. in that aspect they're still books i can enjoy in isolation. but i find it very difficult to enjoy them as a selina fan specifically because in every single one it's like she's looking for solace and security in a man and i'm not sure why. like what was so bad about her original backstory of having a deadbeat dad (whether you ascribe to the volume one or volume two version of him) and why did she need to go looking for her "real" father in carmine falcone. why did she need to seek out temporary boytoy relief in italy. why did she dream about being saved by bruce. none of it really has a reason other than to create a "lack" in her for the sake of it being there, because she'd never needed a man like that before in her post-crisis narrative. as you mentioned it was quite to the contrary and she was fiercely independent and protective of her own peace, esp from men. when she felt empty or without a connection or lifeline to someone real, it was mostly about people like maggie or holly or arizona. her people

what i think it ultimately comes down to are two things: the first thing is the diminishment of her post-crisis origins. after all, it's convenient to ignore how distrustful selina is of people, and of men with power at their leisure to abuse specifically, when her post-crisis origins are no longer relevant to her personal characterization. although selina's status as a sex worker is more prominent now, it was more or less completely swept under the rug for the bulk of volume two. loeb also refused to engage with it in any capacity. it only really resurfaced with the conclusion to volume two because it drew direct parallels to how we initially found her in volume one, and then brubaker expanded on it once again in his take on the character, which was notably juxtaposed against a pre-existing romance with bruce and brings me to the second thing. i've already waxed about this at length so this may very well be recap but i really don't think selina's lack of control over her personal autonomy can be divorced of the modern portrayal of the romance. when selina looking for security and understanding and comfort in bruce is what drives the romance forward there's not much room to maintain her original values and guarded demeanor, if not her outright defensiveness and hostility. a lot of people look at the extensive trauma selina has experienced and argue that she deserves to be in a relationship with someone who allows her to let those walls down. this isn't incorrect in theory. but it does repeatedly ignore who she is. it's kind of like the point i was making about bruce yesterday. exploring the inherently abusive nature of robin or of bruce's right to his children in light of that fact is interesting to do, but the actual execution has rarely managed to take into account who bruce actually is

for however nice it might be for selina to let her walls down romantically and look for solace in bruce—and i say this mostly for the sake of argument, personally i would argue against its necessity—it's realistically not something she's actually going to do. at least not as willfully as she's been portrayed to. realistically she's going to make it extremely hard, which if anything is precisely the appeal. i love it when selina gives bruce a hard time. i love that it's not supposed to be easy or maybe even a possibility for him to win her over bc there's so much about his own ideological stances that's flawed and in opposition to her own. she doesn't have to be any less unrelenting in her principles and worldview for that romance between them to be compelling bc at the end of the day the entire crux of it is that against all odds bruce cares. for however wrong he thinks she might be in a given moment or in her stance against the government, he knows who she is and how hard she's fought and what she's survived and it makes him sympathetic to her because she's real. she's a wonderful character through which to explore the logical limits of bruce's self-righteousness and categorization of crime, as well as a wonderful mirror to hold up to his face as he starts to ask himself whether what he's doing is really the only means of keeping the city safe. and the novelty of it all is that you don't have to sacrifice her character for any of that to be true. writers have simply deluded themselves into believing that they have to and that's why we are where we are today

#you're so real about the reeves movie btw i think she should have kicked him off of a building personally #outbox #also not something i mentioned above but i think a looooot of people cling to bronze age selina #because it was purportedly her first 'positive' portrayal. personally i would argue against that though #i think her golden age iteration was plenty 'positive' and there was an inherent understanding that although she loved supervillainy #she wasn't necessarily evil in a way comparable to other rogues. she always had an inclination towards mercy and bruce Noticed that #which is what made their relationship really interesting. bc she was committing crimes and in his head he was like #yeaaaah she's wrong. but she's also not hurting anyone per se. and she's so pretty. let me turn a blind eye it's fine #these were more generic ideas that newell subsequently rewrapped in new skin and then further developed along a political lens #but i think a lot of people comparatively prefer bronze age selina bc it fully embraced a romance in the most traditional sense #so at the end of the day a lot of the fan sentiment really comes down to preferring wish fulfillment over good storytelling. at least imo #bronze age selina to me is one of the most boring characters ever. and i also hate that she has to 'prove' she's no longer villainous to br #to bruce. and the fact that he suspects her. like since the 40s it's been word of law by the ogs that bruce Doesn't suspect her #he's the first person to not suspect her while everyone around him is judging him for it #i know writers and perspectives change etc etc but when that's what the original creators of both characters are telling you #i feel like it has to hold some weight #so yeah. bronze age might as well be the shit under my shoe it's so boring and bland and most of all ahistorical #bronze age batkat i mean

UGH anon i can't believe i didn't answer this very important question before, and esp bc i think maybe you were hoping for a full fic and not just. this random assortment of headcanons, but, obviously i have thots:

one of my fav John & Chas comics canon scene is when they goof on some rando at a bar bc he looks like a character from spinal tap, from which i infer: they probably watched it together, or else must've discussed it (w nostalgia given their own ~touring days) enough that john knows chas'll get the reference. HENCE i have inferred that they have at least somewhat similar tastes in pop culture and i assume that holds true across canons.

comics!john is also someone who canonically referenced dr who, star trek, and star wars, ergo, a BIT of a (sci-fi) nerd, which you wouldn't expect looking at him HOWEVER. chas knows 👀 and probably teases him about. not that chas is like. COOL but i see him as having idk more basic tastes. Airport fiction, etc. Stuff he can consume on his (minimal) downtime as a cabbie/dad/chauffeur/bodyguard/personal chef.

BUT anyway, obviously, i think they watch enough movies & TV together (or separately, but have similar enough tastes) that they have the same reference bank so in show canon i assume it’s like, john makes a lot of random snarky asides, chas laughs at it, and zed has no idea what they’re laughing about and after the first few times she asks, decides she really doesn’t want to.

additionally, show canon is, when john is in town, they go to bars & music shows together (or i guess at least bars where live music is played? but either way john keeps him out ALL NIGHT and renee obviously hates it).

I think John maybe sometimes forgets that Chas isn't 100% aligned w him on stuff? I just recall TV john having that rambly convo w the bartender at the end of the [aired] pilot where hes talking about the sex pistols vs the ramones & then chas shows up [looking like an absolute DILF in his three layers of clothing in ATLANTA of all places] and im not sure if this actually happened but i can just picture john like, trying to rope chas into that discussion & chas being like, 🙄.

Another john/chas friendship is just based on its longevity. chas has obvs known him a long time & remembers john in his "cutting up his t shirts & safety pining them back together " baby punk disaster stage, and/or his "frontman in a truly terrible band" thing, so even when john is being all broody (esp when john is being all broody) and/or the worst, chas can't completely divorce that from skinny, messy, but in some ways probably happier or at least less traumatized teenaged/early 20s y/o john.

Relatedly, comics!chas has nothing but disdain for Mucous Membrane, despite being their roadie. (i’m assuming he took the job bc he thought it would get him girls tbh.) And he's not afraid to mention it to john, even when john HAS not asked. Just full on roasts him about it, and john takes it so personally! A DELIGHT. any area where chas has a SLIGHT upper hand on john & relentlessly exploits it really just balances them and thus i’m always a fan.

theres a bit in show canon (I'm p sure it was in the New Orleans ep?) where john, chas, & zed are in the car & have to go talk to the police about something, and john starts throwing out different backstories they can use w the implication that they're the ones he & chas have used in the past, and chas is just like nodding along, and idk it's a small moment but it speaks to the fact that post-fire & pre-zed, john & chas DID engage in at least some spooky shit shenanigans, just the two of them. or maybe their ~bits go back to the MM days, or when they were even younger & john was out there just conning people out of things? Either way, EXCELLENT friendship history vibes.

(I actually just had kind of a sad thought which is, the fun hanging out & drinking in dive bars while listening to local bands stuff was a pre-fire/arthurian spell thing, bc after that chas may have mostly been hanging out w john bc they were doing ~spooky shit stuff)

also i’ve said it before but show!john & chas GO GROCERY SHOPPING TOGETHER IN THE PILOT and we DON’T get to see it and it’s NEVER referenced again and this is BIPHOBIA even more so than the fact the camera drifts when john kisses him in the bar

YES HI HELLO I WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THE TWO SPECIALEST GUYS (GENDER NEUTRAL)

so simon peck and hiroto poole. they are players who exist in the blaseball database. you could search for them and their names would pop up. however, they exist Nowhere Else on the site because they were generated as replacement players for jaylen during the weird season 1 election that ran 3 instances of itself with different outcomes every time. poole was from the timeline where the magic won most of the blessings, and peck was TECHNICALLY from the main timeline, but derrick my good friend derrick was for some reason the replacement who stuck on the site for good. not sure why this was!

ANYWAY. i got it in my head one day that it would be fun if peck and poole sort of existed in a meta universe outside of blaseball where they could look in on blaseball like it was a board game they're playing. like the in-universe version of the devs kind of? extremely umineko inspired lmao. and i wrote a fic about it that is a metatextual take on end of expansion that also implies, like the reader/lootcrates/the shelled one/the monitor are all basically avatars that peck and poole use to interact with the game itself from their weird commentary box in the void

obv like nothing is canon, maybe they're dead but maybe they aren't, maybe blaseball itself is something they're making up themselves in the afterlife! it's deliberately ambiguous! also neither of them are normal. poole is a closet theater kid who is obsessed with preserving as much of the game as he can, so his avatars are lootcrates and the monitor (preserving history/mvps and dead players/their legacies, respectively). peck is pissed off that their rightful place in the universe was taken by some schmuck so they play the chaos/destruction side with the reader and the shelled one. they both view everything heavily in terms of 'this is all based on dice rolls and random number generators' and most actual players who met them would probably hate them lmao

they are also Just Two Guys though. like rosencrantz and guildenstern or sam and max type Two Guys. they hate each other but also they're the only ones they can talk to. @arcnoise and i have talked at length about them getting on each others nerves but also they're bffs but no they're not they're divorced. they will team up to destroy your life if you cross them but they're also getting into a fistfight right now over poole trying to vault rat mason for a fifth time. i hope any of this makes sense lmao i know my tag for them is equally incomprehensible

in which i go feral over gilear/sklonda. more under the cut

i keep thinking abt how canon + fanon uses gilear as a sorta punching bag in terms of comedy,, which isn't necessarily a bad thing ofc, esp since it's resulted into so much great content and entertainment. but dang it i've attached myself a little too closely to gilear and ever since i listened to sigfig's gilear song (sad guy) i started having a crisis about how he really just is a punching bag when it comes to the overall story,, and now i have just . dedicated myself to bringing gilear happiness because that's what He Deserves !!!

and like. not just the shallow kind of happiness that comes from banging a hot elf milf or subscribing to a monthly yogurt subscription, but the genuine happiness that comes through discomfort, perhaps pain, in finding your place in this world.. and like ?? that's maybe why i enjoy g/s so much .. gilear's dynamic with sklonda just makes Sense to me.. like first off obv they have some of my fave tropes ie friends-to-lovers and girlboss/malewife.. and don't forget the Flavor(TM) of an elf and a goblin together, one of whom is divorced and the other widowed, coming from vastly different backgrounds and yet !! they are both going through struggles of being single parents and having to take care of kids who want to go on Adventures and find their own places in the world,, they have both gone through heartbreaks and losses that are different yet the same,, and perhaps maybe they aren't as different as they thought they were !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and perhaps because they're a little older, in their 40s (human years), and they've been married already, they might think that they'll never find a second chance, and perhaps they've already shooed that thought away from their minds. and ofc they love their kids - but as the kids grow up they have to grow away from their parents, and gil & sklon both recognize that they need to give fig & riz that space to grow and find themselves. but it's resulted into a loneliness that's quite obvious for gil but is also very true for sklonda too, even though she probably does her best to hide it; after all she has a job to do and justice to uphold, there's no time to feel lonely when she has a case to crack.

and gods!! imagine the Drama(TM) if gil was suddenly in very real danger .. i've seen enough crime kdramas to prepare myself for everything that entails...........

anyway going back to the thing about loneliness .. sklonda wouldn't want to really rush into a relationship, still unsure of what romance means to her after the death of her husband (who she still very much loves!) but she likes that she's not alone, that she can confide in a friend who is also a little down on his luck, and who happens to be the (single) parent of her kid's friend. and there's a bit of tiptoeing around what this is between them, and there's awkwardness and fluff and wondering what small gestures mean. and both of them aren't sure at all - but both of them are sure that they like being together in the most innocent sense of that word.

and when they do get together .. i don't think it'll be like, anything huge or world-ending or whatever. they won't kiss under the fireworks or profess their love after nearly dying. no... i think it'll be soft and slow - like the blossoming of a flower.. instead of dramatic make-out sessions it's just gilear holding sklonda's hand just a little more firmly than he used to .. instead of big showy dates, it's sklonda giving gilear gifts more often and without second-guessing herself.. it's about finding certainty, finding a place that fits just right, in being next to each other ............

okay here me out but high school!spn would be hilarious because, y'know, there's the 3 winchester (yes adam is there) and horrible dad john winchester. obivously, mary is dead which is why john in horrible.

BUT, other than the winchesters, there's also the angels, which everyone is also deadass confused about because they're's like 30 of them?? and apparently they're all related, all adopted by birth except the 4 eldest. and the very oldest, michael, raises them, which nobody knows if it's legal or not, but everybody's too afraid to say something.

And, of course, they're's the demons, who are like a bunch of kids who live at an orphanage and hate the angels.

Anyway she’s a farm girl, (for some reason in my head “a family of monster hunters” translates to normal universe as “family farm” idk idk) so maybe she gets some fancy agriculture degrees or becomes a conservationist (Sam being a National Parks nerd??? yes please. he’d sit and help Mary study and he’s been known to hijack tours from Park Rangers but he’s so earnest it’s hard to be mad at him)

they have a crazy amazing garden (adhd!dean helping his mom in the garden??? yes). Mary teaching self-defense classes! Kate teaching the boys advanced first aid! And regretting it! No, Dean, just because you CAN sew up your brother’s wound doesn’t mean you should!

Dean trying to teach Adam and Sam to shave because “i’m the man of the family” and Kate saying “oh sweetie, I’m the man of the family. you get to be a kid of the family, ok?” because let Dean be a child, please, and also, now none of these children understand gender and it’s WONDERFUL. (Adam is the only full time he/him in the house and as much as Dean protects his little brothers, Adam has been known to punch a transphobe or two.

it’s VERY important to me that Dean is a theatre nerd. VERY IMPORTANT. He and Sam might play basketball just because of their height, but I don’t know that they enjoy it that much. Sam’s more of a lacrosse or soccer guy. Adam’s into hockey (little rage monsters that they are)

idk it depends on ships that you want? Because high school age Crowley being Dean’s Bad Boy Boyfriend is pretty primo comedy, imo, and you would work in the Leviathans as a rival high school or even as new kids? And of course Michael/Adam Sam/Lucifer don’t work in a hs au with the archangels aged up the way I have? You could have the Older Sibling Angels Be Gabe, Balthazar, and Naomi, with Naomi being the one leaves last, who was helping Chuck with his cult (which leaves more room for Michael to be a himbo)
