If you had the power to give a singular Star Trek character the permission, ability and opportunity to kill one other singular other Star Trek character, who would you pick?
(I ask because while I'm pretty sure I'd usually pick someone more obvious like Kira and Dukat, I am currently watching Doctor Bashir I Presume for the first time ever and let's just say I think there should have been some doctor on doctor violence 😡 With each Zimmerman appearance I like him less and less, the long 90s trek main cast truly have some of the worst fathers in history apart from obvious exceptions)
(And sidenote, I started writing this message up before I got to the scene where Julian gives more backstory details (specifically I started composing it the moment I saw Julian realise his parents were there tho it was obviously already a dick move either way) and now I'm there and like. I've only ever seen people describe his (former) condition as a learning disability (in addition to autism which ofc we know he still has) with a handful of alternative takes where it was either reinterpreted as or shown comorbiding with a physical disability and now that I'm hearing him talk about it... y'all, that's not what he's describing. That man had an intellectual disability and if I see anyone try to erase that fact again, I'm gonna start biting people. I am so fucking serious.)

GOOD QUESTION obviously kira and dukat is probably #1 on the list but there are just generally so many characters who deserve to kill their shitty parents it’s hard to choose just one. also i’m so sorry but there are several moments where i think b’elanna and/or seven should’ve been allowed to kill the emh
that bit in doctor bashir, I presume? when julian says hey, listen, I really don’t want you to contact my parents and zimmerman is like yeah okay. and then literally the second he is out of earshot zim makes an actual physical note reminding himself to immediately contact his parents like he was a dramatic cunt for that fr

"You’re saying that Dr. Bashir regularly fraternizes with a Cardassian exile?”
“I was under the impression that promoting interspecies cooperation was one of Starfleet’s primary goals.”
“And you’re missing the point,” snapped Zimmerman. “Dr. Bashir has regular contact with a Cardassian exile and didn’t think this information was relevant to share with the project.”

Man, Julian's father is not the horrid asshole everyone presented me. He's thick yes, just like Julian btw, but he loves his son.
The REAL total asshole in the story is Dr Zimmerman. What a grand prick! He's the worst manipulative, lying, deceiving, irrespectful asshole with Julian! And the worse is I ADORE him despite it all, cause he's an annoying, unbearable, hopeless asshole the way Q is! And I LOVE Q!
I'm sure if Q met him, they'd both wildly, savagely make out like beasts.
Dr Zimmerman: What were your initial impressions of Doctor Bashir? Good and bad.
Garak: I remember that lunch, I might just regret that lunch for the rest of my days. I remember those Starfleet boys, tripping over themselves to avoid my gaze. I remember that dreamlike implant's daze, like a dream that you can't quite face - but Doctor Bashir, I'll never forget the first time I saw your face! I have never been the same. Intelligent eyes in a hunger-pang frame...And when I said 'hi', he forgot his dang name! Set my heart aflame, every part aflame - this is not a game...
In doctor bashir, I presume when Zimmerman is interviewing Miles and says that it's confidential so you think Miles is boutta talk shit but instead he says a bunch of rly nice things about Julian and then is like "Julian's not gonna read any of this, right?" I think that's extremely cute
Star Trek thought: how Garak's interview with Doctor Zimmerman would have gone if he'd actually been in 'Doctor Bashir I presume:
"Julian Bashir is the CMO of this station."
"I'm aware. Could you tell me anything else about him?"
"He has dark features, and tends to wear a Starfleet Uniform."
"Can you tell me his likes, his dislikes? Your impressions of him? What qualities he appears to have."
"I wouldn't want to make any assumptions of the man."
"What did he have for lunch today?"
"Dr Zimmerman, how could I possibly answer that question?"
"Because you had lunch together! As I have been told you have done at least once a week since he arrived on this station several years ago! You sought him out, I'm told! And continue to be extremely close to the man. I was told he spends more time with you than anyone else outside the senior staff! And you're telling me you have no insights into his character? His behaviour? I don't know, literally anything!?"
"... I suspect he may be interested in the study of medicine."
oh god s5e16 “doctor bashir I presume” hurts so much. julian got fucken altered genetically against his will as a child that’s so fucked up. all bc he was disabled and his parents couldn’t accept that. and illegally at that. such an upsetting episode to experience as a disabled person. my heart fuckin hurts for julian
at least there was the sweet leeta/rom subplot and appearance of emh to make it easier to get thru. definitely know I’m going to love emh when I get to voyager now. fuck dr zimmerman tho
"Doctor Bashir I Presume?" Is such a frustrating episode bc I shed real tears over Siddig El Fadil's performance and Bashir's deep hurt and resentment about being genetically altered as a child but the B plot with Leeta having to choose between Rom and Dr Zimmerman is almost unwatchable... Nothing more Star Trek than being the best the franchise has to offer and the worst the franchise has to offer all in one episode
