Taylor was inspired to write “Love Story” when she was going through a difficult situation with a boy she liked, whom she wasn’t “officially” dating. “Elvis loved “I Will Always Love You,” and he wanted to record it,” said Parton in a 2006 CMT interview. “I got the word that he was going to record it, and I was so excited. I told everybody I knew, ‘Elvis is going to record my song. You’re not going to believe who’s recording my song.'”

Parton added, “I thought it was a done deal because he don’t just say he’s going to do something. Anyway, he sent word that he loved it and he was doing it. They get to town and they call and they ask if I want to come to the session, and of course, I was going to go.”

The cover was too good to be true after Parton was approached by Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, who demanded that Elvis receive a hefty portion of the publishing rights to the song.

“Now, you know we have a rule that Elvis don’t record anything that we don’t take half the publishing,” said Parker, according to Parton. “And I was really quiet,” said Parton. “I said, ‘Well, now it’s already been a hit. I wrote it and I’ve already published it, and this is the stuff I’m leaving for my family when I’m dead and gone. That money goes in for stuff for my brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews, so I can’t give up half the publishing,’ and he said ‘Well then, we can’t record it.'”

Parton added, “I guess they thought since they already had it prepared and already had it ready, that I would do it. .. Something in my heart [said] ‘Don’t do that,’ and I just didn’t do it, and they just didn’t do it.”

Turning down Presley, said Parton, broke her heart because she truly wanted to hear him sing her song.

“I said, ‘I’m sorry, but I can’t give you the publishing,” said Parton, talking about the experience in a 2021 interview. “I wanted to hear Elvis sing it, and it broke my heart I cried all night. But I had to keep that copyright in my pocket. You have to take care of your business. Everybody’s going to use you if they can. These are my songs. They’re like my children. And I expect them to support me when I’m old.”

Though Presley never recorded the song, it still held a special place in his heart. Parton previously shared that his ex-wife Priscilla told her that he sang the song to her when they divorced. “Priscilla told me that when she and Elvis divorced, Elvis sang my song to her,” shared Parton. “That touched me so deeply.”

i don't know if you've seen the film, but they subtly reference this (and were planning to do so even more directly with austin singing it in the scene). it's astonishing to think what an indelible song it would become almost two decades later when memorably covered by whitney. elvis connecting to it given what he felt at that time is very poignant and understandable, and i wish so much that he had been able to record it, it would've been stunning. (do not get me STARTED on my rage towards that man and the way he intentionally held him back and the countless opportunities and songs E missed out on because of his greedy parameters and general lack of vision. he nearly didn't get to record suspicious minds because of this too, though they fortunately worked that out, but the things he could've done in his career are probably incalculable and it makes my heart ache.)

Carly Pearce and Gwen Stefani's "Just a Girl" moment was a long time coming! The duo joined forces to perform No Doubt's iconic 1995 single at the CMT Music Awards on Sunday in Austin, Texas, with Pearce gushing over the bond they share earlier that night on the red carpet. 

"I love her," Pearce, who recently opened for Blake Shelton on his Back to the Honky Tonk Tour, said of the pop star. "I've gotten to know her pretty well being on tour with Blake and she just is a true fan of songwriting, just like me. Just to be able to come together and have a real moment with somebody that you've gotten to know -- it's not just a collaboration out of nowhere -- it's going to be fun."

Stefani has embraced the country music community since she began dating Shelton back in 2015. The pair tied the knot on July 3, 2021 on Shelton's Oklahoma ranch in a chapel built specifically for the occasion. 

Sunday's CMT Music Awards served as a stylish date night for the couple, marking the first time they have ever attended the event together.

as things get even worse in ukraine please remember that online posts from individuals are not the same as vetted reports. yes there are individuals posting who are going to be able to be more accurate about what’s happening because it is actually happening to them and on-the-ground reports on social media have been huge in recent years in keeping the world informed during times of turbulence but!! please remember:

people can and WILL lie to get attention esp during a crisis - someone saying “i’m from ukraine” when you have no other evidence is not a reliable source, double if their profile (blog, etc) looks relatively new or only has a few unrelated posts

people only know what they know! people can report what’s happening to them in the context that they understand it - that doesn’t give a full picture of what’s happening to an entire country or even a single city

deliberate misinformation specifically by russia is a thing

GET. MULTIPLE. SOURCES. check at least 2-3 news sources ON TOP of social media posts - whatever threads seem to be aligning across all sources are probably the closest to the truth

being informed means being responsibly informed and it’s okay if you don’t have the bandwidth (time, emotional energy, etc) to check your info in the middle of the day. better to be silent than to spread misinformation so please please check before you post

not to be on my debut shit but if you weren’t there (watching cmt in 2007) you don’t remember how debut should not have worked that’s not what country music WAS then. it was just post-9/11 so new artists were all patriotism and country boys in trucks drinking and idolizing their fathers and war and occasionally being sad about a lost love and girls in short shorts looking wife-eyed and loving Jesus and occasionally being sad about a dead love. like taylor in her sparkly dresses with her big hair singing about high school and unrequited puppy love wasn’t designed to work but it DID because young women went absolutely feral over this gangly blond in prom dresses who sang about things they understood, things they felt and taylor was such a risk but she proved her mettle and then everyone proceeded to make her keep doing it for another sixteen years even though as a literal teenager she made a genre fit her not the other way around and i have to chew glass every time i think about it

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss to Appear on “Crossroads”

If Robert Plant is singing unaided, and it’s unclear if he is, then his performance of “High and Lonesome” for CMT’s “Crossroads” is among his best in recent memory.

Technically a Plant-Alison Krauss number - it appears on Raise the Roof - it’s essentially Plant solo with Krauss, limited to barely audible backgrounds and a touch of violin, a member of the band. That said, the odd couple look to be having a ball as they exchange glances and smile widely at each other while at their respective mics.

The performance video comes from the duo’s episode of “Crossroads,” premiering at 9 p.m. Eastern, Nov. 29.

This surely isn’t the highlight - “High and Lonesome” wasn’t the highlight of the 2021 LP, either. But you can’t expect CMT to give away the good stuff in advance.

(And anons point about this trip to Nashville being for the opry because he’s on the announced list makes no sense. He can have planned a work week in Nashville & decided that performing at the opry while there was a good idea in advance)

Well, he did do the Opry show from home in 2020 (I know, not in person, but that was the only option at the time), and he played the wildlife benefit at the Opry in January 2021. I agree that it’s not a top priority for him, but I still think he cares about the Opry and is honored to be a member. I do agree about him planning an Opry show into a work week. When he played in June 2018, he did the two Opry shows, but it was also during CMA fest week so he had the CMT awards and the CMA stadium show going on as well.
